Blackhawks at Bruins: What bettors need to know

Chicago Blackhawks at Boston Bruins (-130, 4.5)

In order to take a step toward solving the Boston Bruins, the Chicago Blackhawks will need to tackle the task that is Tuukka Rask. The goaltender has kept the President's Trophy-winning Blackhawks off the scoreboard for over 122 minutes as the Bruins have claimed a 2-1 edge in the Stanley Cup final. After Rask recorded his third postseason shutout by stopping all 28 shots he faced in a 2-0 triumph on Monday, Chicago will look to get the better of the young stud in Wednesday's Game 4 and end Boston's seven-game home winning streak - thereby evening the series in the process.

The Blackhawks are expected to receive a boost with the "likely" return of Marian Hossa, according to coach Joel Quenneville. Hossa, who shares the team lead with 15 points, was a late scratch with an upper-body injury on Monday - despite taking part in the pre-game warmup. An ailing power play continues to plague Chicago, which has failed to score on all 11 opportunities with the man advantage in the series and 20 consecutive dating back to Game 2 of the Western Conference final versus the Los Angeles Kings.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: After sharing the team lead in goals with Patrick Kane in the regular season, captain Jonathan Toews has mustered all of one during the playoffs. "Whether it's him or our power play, offensively I think we're all a little gun shy in that area," Quenneville said. "One thing with Johnny, you can always measure how he's going to be competing because game in, game out, he leaves it out there." Quenneville admitted that he has considered reuniting Kane and Toews on the same line - as he did briefly against the Kings. The presence of towering Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara has played a part in splitting the two.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Credit Patrice Bergeron for adding to Chicago's troubles as last season's Selke Trophy winner scored a power-play goal and won 24 of 28 faceoffs in Game 3. Bergeron has tallied twice with the man advantage in the Stanley Cup - and has won the respect of his teammates in spades. "(He) is by far the best two-way centerman in the league," Brad Marchand said. "He proves it night in and night out how special he is as a two-way guy." Daniel Paille scored for the second straight contest and has three points in the Stanley Cup final.

TRENDS:

* Bruins are 7-1 in their last 8 overall.
* Under is 11-3-3 in Blackhawks last 17 games playing on 1 days rest.
* Under is 4-0 in Bruins last 4 home games.
* Blackhawks are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Boston.

OVERTIME:

1. Chicago C Michal Handzus lost all 10 of his faceoffs in the first two periods of Game 2. He did not take another in the third period.

2. The Bruins have killed off their last 27 short-handed chances.

3. Boston has won 11 of its last 13 games.

Confederations Cup betting: Day 4 matches

The FIFA Confederations Cup continues with two matches Wednesday. Here is a quick cheat sheet as the group stage continues in Brazil.

Brazil v Mexico (-333, +400, +1000)

Site: Fortaleza

The Brazilians opened the tournament in impressive fashion by dominating a decent Japan squad by a score of 3-0. The starting XI will most likely remain unchanged for the match versus Mexico. The Mexicans played versus Italy but lost 2-1 on a late goal by Mario Balotelli. A loss and Mexico is eliminated. They may not have what it takes to beat Brazil, but they should be attacking with guns blazing. They have the firepower to put some goals on the board, but the question will be weather the Mexicans can stop a very formidable Brazilian attack.

The last time the two nations played was a friendly last year. Mexico won 2-0 on goals by Gio dos Santos and Chicharito Hernandez.

* Brazil's star Neymar scored the opening goal in brilliant fashion in just the third minute against Japan. He had 63 touches in total while getting just two shots.
* Mexico's keeper Jose de Jesus Corona made four saves and stopped three crosses in a very good performance against the Italians.

Italy v Japan (-138, +250, +400)

Site: Recife

A win and Italy advances out of the group stage. The Italian side could be bolstered by the return of Stephan El Shaarawy to the attack. El Shaarawy missed the opening match against Mexico with an ankle injury but should be recovered and get the start. Japan was beaten by the hosts Brazil 3-0 and must get points here to have any hope of advancing. They have talent in various areas of the pitch, but will be in tough against a very good Italian side.

The two nations have not played since a 1-1 draw in 2001.

* Andrea Pirlo was orchestral in the 2-1 win over Mexico. The veteran midfielder had a goal, two tackles, 84 touches and 93 percent pass accuracy.
* Japan's striker Shinji Okazaki was 60 percent of his aerial battles, had 22 touches and took two shots in Japan's loss to Brazil

Blackhawks Look to Tie Up Finals on Wednesday

2013 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS
at BOSTON BRUINS

Stanley Cup Finals
Game 4 - Boston leads series 2-1
Puck Drops: Wednesday, 8:05 p.m. ET
Line: Boston -135, Chicago +115, Total: 4.5

Thanks to another herculean effort from Tuukka Rask, the Bruins are seeking a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Blackhawks at home in Game 4 on Wednesday night.

Rask stood on his head in Game 3, turning aside all 28 shots Chicago peppered him with, and leading his team to the 2-0 home victory. Boston held the edge in nearly every statistical category, outshooting the Blackhawks 35-28, outhitting them 31-25 and winning an astounding 40-of-56 faceoffs (71%). The Bruins converted on 1-of-4 power-play chances while Chicago was 0-for-5 with the man advantage. Boston has now killed off 27 straight penalties during its postseason run. Bruins LW Daniel Paille, who scored the overtime goal in Game 2, recorded the first tally of Game 3, propelling his team to its fourth win in the past five meetings with the Blackhawks. Boston now has an 8-2 home record this postseason, including seven straight victories at TD Garden. The Blackhawks fell to 3-5 on the road during this postseason, and also lost star RW Marian Hossa to an upper-body injury. He is listed as questionable for Game 4. Although Chicago's offense has scored just one goal in the past two games combined, this club had scored 28 goals in its previous nine contests (3.1 goals per game), including four in Game 1 against this Boston squad. And history shows that after two or more straight Unders, the Blackhawks are an amazing 18-3 (86%), while the Bruins are just 11-15 (42%) in the past three seasons at home coming off a home win by 2+ goals.
The pick here is underdog CHICAGO to win Game 4 and even the series.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also likes the Blackhawks to pull off the upset:

CHICAGO is 25-6 ATS (+15.0 Units) after playing a road game this season.
The average score was CHICAGO 3.6, OPPONENT 2.2 - (Rating = 3*).

Blackhawks netminder Corey Crawford (13-7, 1.73 GAA, .936 Sv Pct. in playoffs) has also played very well in his first Stanley Cup Finals, saving 110-of-117 shots (.940 Sv Pct., 1.72 GAA). In the Game 3 loss, he stopped 33-of-35 shots the Bruins put on net. So far in the series, the Blackhawks have just two players with multiple points, C Andrew Shaw (1 G, 1 A, +2 rating) and C Dave Bolland (1 G, 1 A, +1 rating). Five other teammates have at least a dozen shots on goal (RW Marian Hossa 17, C Patrick Sharp 17, RW Patrick Kane 13, C Jonathan Toews 12 and LW Brandon Saad 12), but only Sharp and Saad have actually gotten any of those chances past Tuukka Rask. Hossa's potential absence looms large, as not only has he played the most minutes (28:59 avg. ice time) of any Blackhawks forward this series, he is one of three Chicago players with 15 points in the postseason, tallying seven goals and eight assists with a stellar +8 rating. Sharp (9 G, 6 A, +2 rating) and Kane (6 G, 9 A, +3 rating) are the others tied for the team lead. Despite leading the Blackhawks in minutes played this series, D Duncan Keith (35:43 avg. ice time) and D Niklas Hjalmarsson (29:32 avg. ice time) have both been held without a point. The Blackhawks are 0-for-11 on the power play in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask (14-5, 1.64 GAA, .946 Sv Pct. in playoffs) has had a phenomenal series so far, saving 120-of-125 shots (.960 Sv Pct., 1.22 GAA). He's led his team to seven straight home wins, saving 227-of-237 shots (.958 Sv Pct.) during this home win streak. This includes turning aside 135-of-137 shots (.985 Sv Pct.) in the past four games at TD Garden. The Bruins have three players with three points in this series, LW Daniel Paille (2 G, 1 A, +1 rating), LW Milan Lucic (2 G, 1 A, +1 rating) and C Tyler Seguin (0 G, 3 A, +1 rating). Three others have two points, including C Patrice Bergeron, the only player in this series with more than one goal. Both of Bergeron's tallies have been on the power play, where the Bruins are 2-of-9 in this series. Seguin and Bergeron lead the team with 13 shots on goals in this series. Although C David Krejci (9 G, 14 A, 23 points) and LW Nathan Horton (7 G, 11 A, 18 points) lead the NHL in postseason scoring, both have been held without a point in each of the past two games. Boston has five players that have logged at least 28 minutes per game during the NHL Finals, including three that are over 30 minutes -- D Dennis Seidenberg (34:53 avg. ice time), D Zdeno Chara (33:57 avg. ice time) and D Andrew Ference (30:48 avg. ice time). Seidenberg had a game-high six blocked shots and a game-high-tying four hits on Monday.

Bruins series price climbing, total drops for Game 4

The Boston Bruins' odds continue to be on the move after they took a 2-1 series lead against the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Bruins prevailed in Game 3 by a score of 2-0. Prices on the B's to win the Stanley Cup moved to -230 with the Blackhawks currently sitting at +190.

The Blackhawks opened the series as -145 series favorites back on June 9.

Bettors could have placed a futures bet on the Bruins at +1200 back before the lockout-shortened campaign started in January.

Boston is currently a -130 home favorite in Game 4 and oddsmakers have set a total of 4.5.

The drop in the total is expected, especially with Chicago's scoring woes in the Cup final. The Blackhawks have not scored in 122 minutes 26 seconds and their power play is now 0-for-11 in the series.

Fading MLB traveling teams a profitable betting practice
by Jason Logan

The circus life of Major League Baseball is unlike any other pro sport. Teams play a game, rush to the airport to fly across the county that night, and are back on the field the next day staring down a new opponent.

Only four American League clubs have a winning record in this situation – Baltimore, Oakland, Seattle and Texas – while six National League teams are above .500 when coming off a game and travel the night before – Atlanta, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, St. Louis and San Francisco.

Just the AL East (29-28) and NL Central (29-26) have a collective winning record in this situation. American League clubs are 76-93 coming off a game and travel while the National League boasts a 76-86 record when going field-runway-field. That’s an MLB-wide 45.9 winning percentage for teams playing and traveling the night before.

“(Travel) does play into (the odds) for sure,” Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club. “It’s a long season and clubs have to rest some people. We consider it more in extreme cases.”

Korner notes that oddsmakers send out the overnight MLB odds for the next day before that day’s schedule is even played, and says bettors can find value scouting those teams traveling that night especially if that day’s contest goes long.

“If we put the line out for the next day and that night’s game goes long or into extras, (bettors) play it. And it’s up to the Bookmaker (http://www.cappersmall.com/forums/redirect-to/?redirect=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bookmaker.eu%2Flatest-promo%2F%3Fcmpid%3D1560_1308)s to make the change, but usually by that point (bettors) have already made their play,” he says. “It’s an angle bettors should play. There are so many games and it’s such a long tough season.”

A perfect example of finding value fading a team with a busy travel sked are the Pittsburgh Pirates, who enter Tuesday's action as the best bet in the majors at +15.10 units (41-29). However, the Bucs would be even more profitable if they weren't 2-10 in outings when coming off a game and travel the day before.

Here are the best and worst records in the majors when coming off a game and travel the night before:

Best travel bets (Records as of June 18, 2013)

Atlanta Braves: 6-4, 6-4 O/U
Seattle Mariners: 6-5, 4-6-1 O/U

2 UNIT = Baltimore Orioles @ Detroit Tigers - UNDER 9 RUNS (-115) *EARLY START*
Listed Pitchers: Tillman vs Porcello
(Note: I’m risking 2.00 units to win 1.74 units)

These two teams have split the first two games of the series with totals of 6 and 7 runs. 3 of their 5 meetings this year have gone UNDER the total. Tonight two hot pitchers square off as Chris Tillman goes for Baltimore and Rick Porcello for the Tigers. Tillman is 7-2 with a 3.61 ERA, .248 OBA and 1.28 WHIP. Over his last three starts he has pitched 19 innings giving up just 3 earned runs against. Porcello is 4-3 with a 4.37 ERA. .250 OBA and 1.14 WHIP. He has also pitched 19 innings over his last 3 starts allowing 4 earned runs for a 1.89 ERA. Since a rough April he has been great, and he is 2-0 with a 3.72 ERA at home. The UNDER is 12-3-1 in the Orioles last 16 overall, 5-1 in the Orioles last 6 road games, 4-1 in their last 5 as a road underdog, and 4-1 in Tillman’s last 5 with a high total between 9-10.5. The UNDER is 8-1 in the Tigers last 9 overall, 5-2 in their last 7 home games, and 5-2 in Porcello’s last 7 starts. Take the UNDER this afternoon.

**1 UNIT = Colorado Rockies @ Toronto Blue Jays - BLUE JAYS TO WIN (-155)
**1 UNIT = Colorado Rockies @ Toronto Blue Jays - BLUE JAYS -1.5 (+136)
Listed Pitchers: Nicasio vs Buehrle
(Note: I’m risking 1.00 units to win 0.65 units and 1.00 units to win 1.36 units)

*We did this a number of times last year, but this is the first time this season We are splitting up the two units bet between the moneyline and run line. If the Jays win by exactly 1 run we stand to lose 0.35 units, if the Jays win by 2+ runs we stand to win 2.01 units, and if they were to lose we’d lose the whole 2 units of course. Instead of going full out on the run line this gives us a bit of a safety net.

The Jays are winners of 7 straight games as they’ve taken the first two of this series vs Colorado winning 2-0 and then 8-3 last night. Colorado has just 9 hits over the two games and have done very little offensively. Tonight they will face a veteran pitcher that has been pitching solid in Mark Buehrle. Buehrle is 3-4 with a 4.66 ERA, .266 OBA and 1.32 WHIP on the season, but he has posted a 2.54 ERA over his last 7 starts and he is 2-1 with a 3.77 ERA. Juan Nicasio is on the mound for Colorado as they look to avoid the sweep. He is 4-2 with a 4.86 ERA, .251 OBA and 1.35 WHIP on the year. Over his last three starts he is 0-0 with a 5.09 ERA, and his ERA has risen each month to start the season. The Rockies are just 20-41 in their last 61 games as an underdog dating back to last year, 2-5 in their last 7 overall, and 18-40 in their last 58 games vs a left handed starter. They have struggled in interleague going 5-23 in their last 28 interleague games. They are just 4-10 in Nicasio’s last 14 starts as an underdog. The Blue Jays have won 7 straight and are 4-1 in their last 5 home games. They are 5-2 in Buehrle’s 7 home starts this year and 4-1 in his last 5 starts. This Blue Jays team is rolling and their is a good vibe at the Rogers Centre. The last time the team has won 7 straight was in 2008 I believe I heard last night so I expect a good crowd and good energy in Toronto tonight. I like the match up with the Jays throwing a lefty out to complete the sweep and with the Jays averaging 6.2 runs per game over their last 5 I like them to win by a few.

Game: Oakland at Texas (8:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: Texas -110 (moneyline)

The Oakland A's and the Texas Rangers have exchanged blows with each winning a game in this series. Oakland got the best of Texas last night, but that poises this Texas team to do what they have done better than any team in baseball - come back strong after a loss. The Rangers are the kings of the hill in this spot at 78-37 when following a setback in their last 115, and at home to pretty much even odds they carry a lot of value. The A's have had consistency problems with Milone, and they have fallen to 1-5 in his last six starts, following a quality start in his last outing. Make the play on Texas to rebound from last night's loss.

double-dime bet - 965 KAN (+140) vs 966 CLE

The Royals gave away a victory last night against Cleveland. But they've been playing good ball and their bullpen usually has been highly reliable. I see the Royals bouncing back today.

Kansas City is 11-3 in its last 14 games. Luis Mendoza has had five strong starts in his last six outings. He has a 2.95 ERA during his last three starts against the Indians.

Cleveland starter Justin Masterson has proven tough at home. The Royals faced him earlier this season, though, and scored seven runs off him in six innings.

Masterson has dropped three in a row to Kansas City. His ERA during this span is 8.84.

BOSTON -½ +128 over Chicago

Normally we would not recommend spotting a half puck to a team like the Blackhawks, but just like every team the Bruins have played this post-season besides the Maple Leafs in the first round (did Toronto really score 18 goals on Rask?), Boston has the Blackhawks reeling and over-thinking the game. Zdeno Chara is one man. Yeah, he’s great but Joel Quenneville has Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews split up so that Chara can’t be on the ice against both of them all the time. Quenneville’s constant line juggling is unnecessary and the frustration it’s causing for the players is evident. John Tortorella of the Rangers was always line juggling and we all know how that worked out. Chicago is down just 2-1 to these Bruins but this deficit seems deeper than the 3-1 hole they were in to Detroit.

Before this series, the Bruins were worried about respecting Chicago’s speed and avoiding dumb penalties. As it turns out, it should have been the other way around. Every game it’s a disciplined, exhaustive effort by the B’s and three stars are not enough to recognize all the great efforts from top to bottom. Instead of dwelling on that morale-killing loss in Game 1, the Bruins have responded by digging deep and doing everything it takes to win. Chicago is getting great efforts from certain players but when your top two guys (Toews and Kane) aren’t producing or going extra hard, it resonates down the entire bench. There is a cliché that says, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” but again, Quenneville is overthinking the game and even if he puts Kane and Toews back together here, the damage may have already been done. Then there’s Tuukka Rask, who has frustrated every team he’s played and he’s doing the same to the Blackhawks. In the end, the Bruins have shut down the high-flying Penguins and Blackhawks when most said it was not possible. After the injury to Nathan Horton, Claude Julien put together a third-line of Daniel Paille, Chris Kelly and Tyler Seguin and the trio came calling again. Julien is out-coaching Quenneville, Boston is more focused and certainly playing with more purpose while the Blackhawks are getting worse with each passing period. Doubtful anything changes tonight and therefore we’ll spot the -½ puck.

Stanley Cup action report: Total bettors taking over 4.5 goals

The Boston Bruins can put the Chicago Blackhawks on the ropes with a win at home in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final Wednesday. We talk with Michael Stewart, an oddsmaker for CarbonSports.ag, about the money coming in on tonight’s NHL playoff action:

Chicago Blackhawks at Boston Bruins – Open: -135, Move: -140

Some books have pumped up the Bruins moneyline for Game 4 while others have begun to trim the price tag on the home side, with action showing on the Blackhawks. According to Stewart, it’s been all Boston money at his book.

“We opened the Bruins at -135 on the moneyline and have since gone to -140 as 73 percent of the money is coming in on the Bruins,” he says.

Boston has won the last two games of the Cup final after losing Game 1 in triple overtime. The Bruins have a huge home-ice edge, having won seven straight inside the TD Garden heading into Game 4.

Puckline bettors are also siding with Boston in Game 4. According to Stewart, 75 percent of bets are taking the Bruins to cover the 1.5-goal spread (+225). The Bruins edged the Blackhawks 2-0 in Game 3.

The total for Game 4 opened at 4.5 and has drawn action on the over, bumping it up to 5 at some markets. Stewart says 70 percent of the over/under bets are siding with the over despite the last two games finishing under. The under is also 4-0 in Boston’s last four home games.
