See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities
By JASON LOGAN

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Lookahead spot

The MLB All-Star break is just around the corner. The brief hiatus can be a speed bump for streaking teams and a moment of mercy for struggling ones. The Detroit Tigers have used the Mid-Summer Classic as a kickoff to the “real season”, going a collective 90-61 following the All-Star break the past two seasons.

Detroit is set up for a double lookahead this week. Not only are the Tigers counting down to the post-ASG schedule but take on the lowly Chicago White Sox for three games, starting Tuesday, before a showdown with the Texas Rangers to end the first half of the schedule. The White Sox are small potatoes compared to the Rangers, who will likely be battling Detroit for playoff positioning and possibly a wild card spot come the fall.

Letdown spot

The two conference leaders in the WNBA do battle when the Minnesota Lynx host the Atlanta Dream Tuesday night. Oddsmakers have set the Lynx (8-3 SU, 6-5 ATS) as 6.5-point favorites for that high-profile matchup. A win over the 10-1 Dream would crown Minnesota as the team to beat in 2013.

The Lynx are back in action following that important game Thursday, visiting the stumbling Indiana Fever. The two teams met in last year’s WNBA Finals, but Indiana has fallen from grace with a 4-7 SU and ATS start to the season. Minnesota could get caught in a big letdown spot, especially with the Fever showing some of their championship swagger in recent games.

Schedule spot

The Miami Dolphins have one of the weirdest schedules for the 2013 NFL season. Miami opens with five non-divisional games and closes against three straight AFC East foes. Not only that, the Dolphins find themselves playing four games in just over three weeks in November.

Miami is at New England for a grinder in Week 8 (+7) then hosts the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football in Week 9 (-1). The Dolphins come off that short week with another primetime matchup at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football in Week 10 (+1.5) before finishing this tough four-game, 22-day stretch with a home date versus the San Diego Chargers in Week 11 (-3).

Winning MLB pitchers that are horrible bets

Here are four pitchers that have won more games than they’ve lost, but have been killing bettors to this point in the season:

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers

The Tigers are 10-8 in Verlander’s starts to date but a $100 bettor would be down $348 if they had wagered on each of the fireballer’s outings. Sharp bettors are instead fading the Tigers when the 2011 AL MVP takes the hill and betting the over to a tune of 11-6-1.

Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers

The Rangers are 10-8 when Darvish gets the ball and $100 bettors are in the red $499 on the righty’s 18 starts. The Japanese export really burned bettors in his most recent start against the Houston Astros when Texas fell as a hearty -320 favorite.

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers

Kershaw boasts a league-best 1.89 ERA but that isn’t impressing bettors. The Dodgers are 11-8 in the lefty’s outings and that's resulted in a $291 loss for $100 bettors in each of his starts. But there may be hope in the second half of the season for Kershaw bettors. L.A. has wins in 12 of its last 15 games and won each of his last three starts.

Matt Harvey, New York Mets

The Mets are used to their role as underdogs on a nightly basis, but they’re almost always favorites when Harvey toes the rubber. The righty has only been a dog twice in his 18 starts and has put $100 bettors $320 in the hole. Surprisingly, New York has a 9-7-1 over/under record in Harvey’s starts.

Three bad MLB teams that are good bets lately

The Seattle Mariners, New York Mets and Chicago Cubs have been fade material all season, but all three clubs have been a good bet lately.

Let's take a closer look:

Seattle Mariners

The Mariners couldn't have asked for a better road trip, as they took back-to-back series' and six of eight games from the Rangers and Reds. Seattle won all six of those games as an underdog and returns home for a four-game set with the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.

New York Mets

New York has quietly posted a 12-8 record since June 18th, with nine of those victories coming in an underdog role. The Mets head to San Francisco to take on the struggling Giants for a three-game set beginning Monday. New York has also been a great over play recently, going 7-1 over/under over its past eight contests.

Chicago Cubs

At 7-4 over their last 11 games, the Cubbies are finally giving their faithful something to cheer about. With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, Chicago’s potential players on the move should continue to step up and showcase their talents for the next few weeks.

Bettors winning big during the 'Underdog Days of Summer'
By JASON LOGAN

A rash of huge sports betting upsets are giving new meaning to the term "Dog Days of Summer".

Even though sports bettors are just over a week into July, this summer has already provided plenty of jaw-dropping underdog wins and the bountiful windfalls that accompany those stunners.

For the most part, underdog wins are good for sportsbooks. While a handful of hopeful bettors rake in a big payday, the majority of the money lands on the favorite. However, sometimes the betting public falls in love with the live dog and sticks it to the bookies when that dog bites back.

From Wimbledon to Weidman, here are some underdog winners of note to kick off the summer.

Wimbledon

The wackiness at Wimbledon actually started in late June when Rafael Nadal (-15,000) suffered a first-round stunner versus Steve Darcis (+2,800), followed by an insane second round that saw Roger Federer (-20,000 vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky +3,300), Maria Sharapova (-6,600 vs. Michelle Larcher de Brito +2,000), Caroline Wozniacki, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and other top seeds bow out.

Women’s favorite Serena Williams (-1,600) was upset by Sabine Lisicki (+900) in the fourth round and Andy Murray snapped a 77-year British drought at the All-England Club in the men’s final. Marion Bartoli finished off the tournament with another win for the dogs, after she took out Lisicki in the women's final and paid off her pre-tourney bettors at +8,000. Murray was a modest +333 to win Wimbledon.

According to Bet365.com, a parlay involving upsets of Nadal, Federer, Sharapova and Williams would have paid out at 320-to-1. However, not having the big names make it deep into a tournament is a double-edge sword for sportsbooks. They clean up on all the futures bets on those stars but see interest in the event sputter because of a lack of name power.

“Action in the early rounds of tournaments is minimal compared to the quarters and semis, so not having star power like Serena, Nadal, Federer was damaging to our volume,” says Michael Stewart, an oddsmaker with CarbonSports.ag, told Covers.

UFC 162

Word on the MMA street was that plenty of fight pundits were siding with Chris Weidman to snap Anderson Silva’s 17-fight unbeaten streak and take the middleweight title at UFC 162 in Las Vegas this past Saturday.

But, despite that growing buzz, most thought Silva would pull out the win – one way or the other – like he had in so many previous bouts. Weidman, still a relative newcomer, closed at +200 with the reigning champ coming back at -250.

Weidman made the most of his title shot, making Silva pay for showboating with a stiff straight left hand that dropped the champ to the mat in the second round. Weidman pursued with a couple shots on the ground before the ref jumped in. Weidman via KO paid out at +800 and Weidman winning the second round was a tasty +950.

“Referees always tell fighters, ‘protect yourself at all times’,” Aron Black of Bet365.com. “Well, Mr. Silva thought that playing cute and playing up to the crowd, which he’s normally good at, can be very costly. Getting caught whilst pretending to be hurt and then jumped on for a ref stoppage is not how he would like to be remembered, but the odds said that the loss wasn’t such a big shock.”

Houston Astros

The Astros are just 2-5 so far in July but one of those wins came as a hefty +288 moneyline underdog at rival Texas this weekend. Houston was matched up against Rangers ace Yu Darvish, with Texas coming back as a -320 favorite.

The Astros chased Darvish with five runs through six innings and added another four runs in the seventh and eighth to secure a 9-5 stunner, getting a big day from their bats. Houston hit a three-run and two two-run homers in the victory.

“What was even a bigger decision for us was the runline, where the Rangers opened -1.5 (-140) and closed -1.5 (-170), a huge 30-cent move for a baseball runline,” says Stewart.

CFL Week 2

Underdogs are just 2-6 ATS through the first two weeks of the CFL season. Those two winners, however, were touchdown underdogs in their second games of the season.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Montreal Alouettes by the very-Canadian score of 19-11 - healthy amount of rouges - as 7-point pups Thursday. Edmonton rounded out the Week 2 slate with a 30-20 upset at Hamilton, also getting a TD from bookmakers Sunday.

British Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel was cruising to victory on Lap 42 at the British Grand Prix on June 30. He opened at +110 and was bet all the way up to -175 before the race.

His live betting odds spiked after Lewis Hamilton and others had tire troubles on the Silverstone Circuit, making Vettel a -1,000 favorite with 12 laps remaining. That’s when a gearbox failure in his Red Bull racer forced him out of the race, leaving Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg to top the podium.

“Considering (Vettel’s) position and odds at the time, it was quite an upset for him to not win the race,” says Black. “With a -1000 price tag, the field was effectively +650 against him.”

Phillies, Best 'OVER' Bet in MLB, Lose Howard for 6-8 weeks

The Philadelphia Phillies have played over the total in 13 of their last 16 games heading into Tuesday night's action at home against the Washington Nationals

That streak has helped propel Philly to become the best 'over' bet in the majors with a 50-39-1 over/under record. Any $100 bettor would be up $344.51 if they had bet the over in each of the club's past six games, during which the over went 5-1.

The Phillies have averaged 5.1 runs per game over their past 16 contests, nearly 1.5 runs more than their season mark. But Philadelphia’s offense was dealt a huge blow Monday when it was determined that slugger Ryan Howard requires surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and will miss six to eight weeks.

Howard was hitting .266 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs prior to the injury.

The Phillies took Game 1 of a four-game set with the Nationals, 3-2.

http://www.sportswagers.ca/graphics/icons/logo_5.pngOakland @ PITTSBURGH
Oakland +107 over PITTSBURGH

Gerrit Cole has made five starts since being called up and three of those five were of the pure quality variety. This hard-throwing youngster made it through three levels last season. In AA, Cole kept the ball on the ground and had an elite strikeout rate but this isn’t AA. In his 30 innings at this level, Cole has just 16 K’s to go along with a troubling 28% line-drive rate. His WHIP of 1.31 is also bordering on unacceptable. Cole has a high ceiling but he’s going to suffer the ups and downs of a pitcher with very little experience at both Triple-AAA (just 74 innings) and the big leagues.
Dan Straily is very similar to Cole in that he is a former minor-league K leader that rocketed from AA to majors by August of last season. His first seven starts last year in the majors had its ups and downs too and in the end, Straily went 2-1 with a 3.89 ERA in 39 innings. After his June 22 start of this year, Straily was temporarily assigned back to Triple-A because the A’s didn’t need a fifth starter. He was subsequently called back up for a July 4 start in which he threw a 7-inning, one-hit gem against the Cubbies. While his overall skills in June weren't exciting, he bumped up his swinging strike rate to 10.0% that month, a mark which gives his decent strikeout rate even more upside. Straily’s 5.00 ERA is the result of his 59% stand rate but a close looks shows that he still carries plenty of profit potential pitching for this determined A’s squad. Among his great starts this year aside from the aforementioned beauty against the Cubs, Straily threw a two-hitter in Texas in seven frames and a four hitter in six innings against the Giants. Straily’s style should bode well here against a Pirates team that strikes out far too often and that has suddenly lost five of seven and three in a row.

Our Pick
Oakland +107 (Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.14)

http://www.sportswagers.ca/graphics/icons/logo_5.pngLos Angeles @ ARIZONA
Los Angeles +103 over ARIZONA

The Dodgers are one of the hottest offensive teams in the league right now and have been so for well over three weeks now. Over that span, L.A. is in the top two in the NL and top four in the entire league in most offensive categories that include runs scored, team BA, on base % and OPS. They scored six times here last night but that could have easily been twice that after the Dodgers belted out 17 hits and left 11 on base. Expect the Dodgers to be a little extra jacked up tonight against Ian Kennedy, who wwill face the Dodgers for the first time since he was suspended for plunking Yasiel Puig. Kennedy has an ugly overall 5.16 ERA, including a 5.40 ERA the first time he goes through lineups. His skills tank after that. He has a BAA of .295 the second time through lineups and a .344 BAA the third time through. He also comes in with an ugly 34%/24%/41% groundball/line-drive/fly-ball profile and over his last five starts, that groundball rate is even lower at 31%. The hot-hitting Dodgers could and probably will tee off against this heavy fly-ball and line-drive pitcher at this unforgiving park.
Ricky Nolasco was once a near-elite skill set just waiting for some hit/strand rate regression to facilitate a breakout. But while the Marlins were waiting for that regression, Nolasco turned 35 and is no longer in the Marlins long term plans. Now Nolasco gets a reprieve of sorts, as he instantly joins a true contender and he figures to be very much focused in his first start in his new digs. Nolasco also brings with him elite control and a good strikeout rate (25BB/90K in 112 IP). Over his last two starts, Nolasco has whiffed 13 batters without issuing a single walk. He also has a 53% groundball rate over his past three starts. The Marlins had won three of Nolasco’s past four starts and now he gets the benefit of starting for a team whose offense is clicking and that is winning a lot of games recently. That works.

Our Pick
Los Angeles +103 (Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.06)

http://www.sportswagers.ca/graphics/icons/logo_5.pngColorado @ SAN DIEGO
Colorado +115 over SAN DIEGO

After posting some pretty sweet numbers in five April starts and holding steady until recently, Eric Stults' skills have come back down to earth. Over his last six starts, he has just 16 K’s in 37 frames and we’re seeing both his line-drive rate increase and his groundball rate decrease. Those are three definite warning signs that tell us to avoid him. Stults is a 33-year-old journeyman that has spent 111 days on the DL over the past three seasons and many more days in the minors (over 800 minor league innings) since he was drafted way back in 2002. Prior to this season, Stults had never thrown more than 99 innings in a season at this level. He’s up to 112 innings already this year and this now becomes unchartered waters for a guy with a long history of poor durability and very average stuff. Furthermore, the Padres have dropped 10 in a row and 12 of their past 13 games.
Jhouly’s Chacin has started 16 games this season and comes in with an ERA of 3.74 and xERA of 4.19. While there is nothing remarkable about that on paper, a close look reveals that 11 of Chacin’s 16 starts have come at Coors Field, the best park for hitters in the majors. On the road, Chacin’s numbers are elite, where his ERA is 2.05 and his groundball rate is 52%. Chacin has not allowed a HR in his last four road starts and he has a much better chance of thriving in this game than his mound opponent. The Rockies also have a better chance of winning this one than the reeling Padres and that is value at its best.

Game: Seattle at New York (7:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: New York -6 (-110)

The Seattle Storm has long been a playoffs fixture in the WNBA, but will be hard pressed to get there this season. They lost their top two players to season ending injuries, and this team is a fraction of what it once was. Both of these teams enter with 5-7 records. But the Storm, who has the biggest home court advantage in the WNBA, has not fared well on the road at just 3-5, and making the trip cross country to win is not going to be easy. Seattle has dropped four of their last five overall, and are not playing well right now, and their best answers will be on the sidelines the rest of the campaign. New York was able to win in Seattle, so I expect them to play with urgency, and confidence at home in this one. Play on New York.

Game: Boston at Seattle (10:10 PM Eastern)
Pick: Seattle -130 (moneyline)

The Boston Red Sox have played at a high level for quite some time, but evidence is being served that it won't last all season long. They are taking some bumps right now as they have lost three straight games. It won't get any easier against Hisashi Iwakuma as he has put together a 7-4 season backed by a strong 2.60 ERA. Allen Webster may not be ready for big league hitters as he is 1-2 with a 7.88 ERA. Boston owns just a 20-46 mark in their last 66 posted as a dog, and has proceeded to lose five straight on the road vs. right-handed pitching. The Mariners have served the dagger at home behind Iwakuma to a total from 7 to 8.5 where they are 10-1 in their last 11. The Red Sox have had trouble here of late as they are just 3-7 in their last 10 here. Take the home team.

(Hamels/Jordan)

We are going to ride the Phillies again tonight. Yesterday I stressed how important it was for this club to win this series. A win today will inch them closer in the division and would be big for Cole Hamels who has struggled big time this year. Things are starting to come together for Philadelphia and the momentum at home should carry them into the all star break feeling confident to make a second half run. Take the Phillies.

Colorado (Chacin) at San Diego (Stults) (-125) 10:10 ET

3% Colorado (Chacin) (+115)

Even the battered and bruised Rockies were able to defeat the free falling Padres 4-2 last night. Expect more of the same this evening as Colorado has now won 9/11 in this series. The Rockies have also won each of the last 5 starts by Chacin over which time he has a 2.10 ERA. In 5 road starts for the season, Chacin has a 2.05 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. With last night’s lost, the Padre run has dipped to 2-14 in which they have totaled only 47 runs and 0-10 in which they have been outscored 59-25. Though Stults has pitched well from this mound, he approaches this game in poor current form having allowed 10 runs in 8 IP in his last 2 outings. Neither he nor the Padres deserve this level of favoritism in this matchup.

LA Dodgers (Nolasco) at Arizona (Kennedy) (-110) 9:40 ET

3% LA Dodgers (Nolasco) EVEN

The last time Kennedy took the mound against the Dodgers he plunked both Puig and Greinke resulting in a 10 game suspension. Though Kennedy has pitched well in his last 4 starts vs. LAD with a 2.81 ERA, he is nowhere near the pitcher of 2 years ago who went 21-4 with a 2.88 ERA. In fact for the season, Kennedy is 3-4 with a 5.16 ERA. Far more interested in backing the Dodgers whose recent 13-3 surge has brought them within 3 games in the loss column of Arizona for the Division lead. Nolasco returns home where he spent his youth routing for the Dodgers. In 9 road starts, Nolasco has a 3.20 ERA. Nolasco is off a solid start in which he allowed just 2 runs in 7 IP of a 6-3 victory vs. Atlanta. The reborn pitcher gives his best for his new team tonight.

Chicago White Sox (Quintana) at Detroit (Verlander) (-250, -1 ½ runs -120) 7:05 ET

4% Detroit (Verlander) (-250, -1 ½ runs -120)

Not about to stop fading the White Sox now who, since ascending to .500, have gone 10-28 and 2-10. CWS has lost their last 7 on this field. And the decent work of Quintana who has a 3-2 record with 3.69 ERA will be overshadowed by his mound opponent. Verlander has owned CWS of late going 12-1 with a 2.23 ERA. Verlander is off a return to form start in which an adjustment to his shoulder angle resulted in allowing no runs in 7 IP of an 11-1 Toronto victory. Detroit’s big bats remain hot as they enter on a 6-1 streak in which they have outscored the opposition 50-24. Run line players take note: 40/49 (82%) of Detroit’s victories this season have come by 2 or more runs. Please consider part of your wager on the run line.

Minnesota (Gibson) at Tampa Bay (Archer) (-165, -1 ½ runs +125) 7:10 ET

4% Tampa Bay (Archer) (-165, -1 ½ runs +125)

Eager to stay on board the meal ticket that has been Tampa Bay’s run. The positive run is now 37-20 including 9-1 in which they brought the recent Minnesota record to 1-8 as the team has recorded a 6.69 ERA in those 9 games. The Twins have also gone just 3-9 away recently. Gibson is clearly not the answer with the 7.90 ERA and the 1.71 WHIP. Gibson is off a start in which he has allowed 8 runs in 5 1/3 IP to NYY. Far prefer the slants of Archer who has allowed 3 or less runs as the Rays have captured his last 3 starts. In a trio of starts from this mound, Archer has a 3.38 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. Run line players take note: For Minnesota 54/71 (76%) of their road losses L2Y have been by 2 or more runs. For Tampa Bay, 42/50 (84%) including 15/16 (94%) of their recent wins have been by 2 or more runs. Please consider making part of your wager on the generous underdog run line proposition.

Boston (Webster) at Seattle (Iwakuma) (-125) 10:10 ET

3% Seattle (Iwakuma) (-125)

Since leaving home, the Red Sox have lost their way. They have now lost 3 consecutive games and dropped to 3-9 on the road of late. It is doubtful that either Webster or a declining bullpen with a 127 index will stop the slide. Webster is 1-2 with a 7.22 ERA allowing 12 walks in 24 IP. With last night’s 11-4 victory vs. Boston, Seattle is now on a 5-2 ascent. Though there has been a chink in the armor of Iwakuma of late, the numbers from this mound are mind boggling. Going back to last year, Seattle has won 13/16 Iwakuma home starts. In 9 starts from this mound this season, Iwakuma has a 1.84 ERA, 0.63 WHIP, 57/3 KBB and .169 OBA.

LA Angels (Blanton) (-120) at Chicago Cubs (Wood) 8:05 ET

3% Chicago Cubs (Wood) +110

There is no doubt that the Angels are at last playing to their potential with recent runs of 10-2 in which they have scored 65 runs with 7 consecutive road wins. But today’s starter, Blanton, is not to be trusted. For the season, Blanton has a record of 2-10 with 5.14 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. The Cubs are playing their best ball of the season on a long term up tick of 21-17 and more recently 8-4 including a 3 game win streak. Far prefer the slants of Cubs All Star starter, Wood. Yes, the Cubs have scored just 10 runs behind Wood in losing his last 6 starts. But for the season, Wood has a 2.69 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 80/33 KBB, numbers far superior to his mound opponent tonight.

WNBA

Atlanta Dream at Minnesota Lynx (-5-) 9:00 ET ESPN2

3% Atlanta Dream +5-

This game may well be a preview of the WNBA finals between the 10-1 Dream and the 8-3 Lynx who are an undefeated 6-0 on their home court this season. Even at full strength, this is a tough matchup for Minnesota. But without one of their best players Seimone Augustus (ankle), there is a clear advantage to the visiting Dream. Atlanta has the best all around defense in the league with numbers of 70/40/30 and forcing a league high 18 turnovers per game. They also have arguably the best interior duo in the league with Angel McCoughtry and Sancho Lyttle. A handful, way too much to give to the best team in the league whose only loss came with Lyttle out of the lineup.

*3 Star MLB Total Domination* Here we have a matchup of two pitchers who have been struggling all season. Both Josh Johnson and Ubaldo Jimenez have had great seasons in the past, but 2013 hasn't been impressive for either of these guys. Johnson has an ERA above 7 on the road while Jimenez has an ERA above 6 at home. Toronto's offense is much better with Jose Reyes in the leadoff spot. Cleveland's offense is better than most realize, especially with Jason Kipnis and Michael Brandley hitting the ball as well as they are right now. The wind is expected to be blowing out center field which will help as well. Take the over.

*3 Star MLB Totals TKO* Both Daniel Straily and Gerrit Cole are top pitching prospects. These guys don't have a lot of experience in the majors, but their history in the minors tells me they'll be dominating in the majors sooner rather than later. Oakland's offense started off red hot this year, but they have cooled off of late. Pittsburgh's offense is inconsistent and hasn't been good the last few days. Both of these teams have a great bullpen. Wally Bell will be behind home plate here and he has a huge strike zone that should help these two young pitchers. Take the under.

*4 Star MLB Play of Day* Justin Verlander will take to the mound against the Chicago White Sox, and the Detroit Tigers have had a ton of success with their ace going against the White Sox. Detroit is coming off a huge series win in Cleveland where the Tigers reestablished a firm grip on the AL Central lead. The Chicago White Sox are playing like a team that has given up on the season. They are 10-28 in their last 38 games. Detroit hits lefties well, so I expect them to get to Jose Quintana. Verlander has been much more sharp of late. The White Sox are 0-4 in their last 4 as an underdog. The White Sox are 0-5 in their last 5 against the AL Central. They are 0-6 in Quintana's last 6 road starts verses a team with a winning record. Detroit is 12-1 in Verlander's last 13 starts against the White Sox. The Tigers are 6-0 in their last 6 home games following a road trip of at least 7 days. Take Detroit -1.5.

We had another free winner last night as Seattle trounced Boston and tonight we stay in the American League and go against a pitcher we've had great success against since the start of the season. Toronto's Josh Johnson has been a huge disappointment since coming north of the border from Miami. Recently, he has allowed 11 runs in just 8 1/3 innings in his last two starts and in three road starts this season he's 0-2 with an ERA of 9.26 ERA. Cleveland will send Ubaldo Jimenez to the rubber and he is in great form, going 2-0 with a 3.81 ERA in his last five starts. Ride the Tribe!
