Week 5

Jets (2-2) @ Falcons (1-3)—Jets are making way too many mistakes to win, and its not all the rookie QB; they’ve turned ball over 12 times (-10) and in last three games, they committed 38 penalties for 300 yards, which helped create field position deficits of 16-9-18 yards. Two takeaways in four games ( none in last three games) isn’t good. Atlanta failed in last-minute red zone drives on offense in Weeks 1,4, on defense in Week 3, or else they could just as easily be 4-0; Smith is 19-5 vs spread coming off loss, but something is missing with Atlanta, which is 22-12-1 as home favorite under Smith. Would expect Atlanta to try and run ball more; they’ve run ball more than 16 times in only one of four games with Jackson out of lineup. Jets are 7-12 as road underdogs under Rex Ryan, 1-7 in last eight as a non-divisional road dog. Atlanta was torched (9.2/10.2 yards/attempt) by two quality QBs they faced (Brees/Brady) but Smith isn’t in that category—Falcons held Bradford/Tannehill to 6.4/4.9.

NHL betting: Away faves 3-0 to start the season

Away faves have jumped out to a 3-0 record thus far in the early stages of the NHL season.

The LA Kings won 3-2 after a shootout against the Minnesota Wild as -110 road faves Thursday.

Friday featured two road faves prevail on enemy ice. The Ottawa Senators were -130 in Buffalo and won 1-0 on a last-minute goal by Erik Karlsson.

Finally, the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 as -112 road faves.

Sunday provides a spot for this trend as the Vancouver Canucks - fresh off a 6-2 thumping of the Edmonton Oilers - head to Calgary to face the Flames.

Monday's MLB ALDS betting: What bettors need to know

Oakland A's at Detroit Tigers (-150, 7)

The Oakland Athletics are matching the vaunted Detroit Tigers’ rotation pitch-for-pitch. After settling for a split against Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, the Athletics will attempt to take the series lead when is shifts to Detroit for Game 3 on Monday. Tigers pitchers have notched 29 strikeouts in the first two games but the offense produced only two extra-base hits - both in the first inning of Game 1.

Detroit finished near the top of the majors in most offensive categories during the regular season and scored three runs in the first inning of Game 1 only to be held scoreless in the following 17. Oakland did not exactly tear the cover off the ball at home either, but Stephen Vogt got the hit that counted with his walk-off single in Game 2. Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera managed two hits in the first two contests and continues to battle groin and abdominal injuries.

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, MLB Network

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the mid-50s. Wind will blow across the field at 21 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Jarrod Parker (12-8, 3.97 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (14-8, 2.57)

Parker went 19 starts in between losses before falling flat in September. The 24-year-old allowed seven earned runs and failed to get through five innings in two of his last three starts. Parker made two starts against Detroit in the 2012 ALDS and lost both, surrendering a total of seven runs (six earned) on 14 hits in 12 2/3 innings.

Sanchez led the AL in ERA and finished strong by going 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA in five September starts. The Venezuela native struggled at home against Oakland on August 26, yielding four runs on five hits in five innings. Sanchez made one start against the Athletics in the 2012 ALDS and suffered a loss despite giving up just two runs in 6 1/3 frames.

TRENDS:

* Over is 15-5-1 in the last 21 meetings in Detroit.
* Athletics are 0-4 in Parker's last four starts vs. Tigers.
* Under is 8-0 in Tigers last eight overall.
* Athletics are 13-3 in their last 16 Monday games.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Tigers 1B Prince Fielder is 1-for-8 with a single in the series and 1-for-10 against Parker in his career.

2. Oakland LF Yoenis Cespedes is 4-for-8 with two runs scored and two RBIs in the series.

3. Detroit CF Austin Jackson has struck out five times in eight at-bats, including four times in Game 2.

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays (-104, 7)

The Boston Red Sox are one game away from advancing to the American League Championship Series. They will attempt to close out the Division Series when they visit Tampa Bay for Game 3 on Monday. The Red Sox got all the breaks the quirky dimensions of their home park had to offer in the first two games and ended up tagging Tampa Bay pitching for 19 runs in the two contests.

The Rays struggled to figure out the “Green Monster” in left field and rookie Wil Myers endeared himself to the Boston fans with a big mistake in right during Game 1, but the familiar dimensions of their own stadium await in Game 3. Tampa Bay went 51-30 at home during the regular season, tied for the third-best home record in the AL behind the Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics. To get back in the series the Rays need to figure out a way to stop David Ortiz, who homered twice in Game 2 and contributed a key double in Game 1.

TV: 6:07 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Clay Buchholz (12-1, 1.74 ERA) vs. Rays RH Alex Cobb (1-0, 0.00)

Buchholz went 3-1 with a 1.88 ERA in four starts after returning from a shoulder injury that cost him three months during the regular season. The 29-year-old made his return at Tampa Bay on Sept. 10 and struck out six in five scoreless innings to earn the win. Buchholz made only one previous postseason start, yielding two runs on six hits in five innings against the Los Angeles Angels in the 2009 ALDS.

Cobb pitched the Rays into the Division Series with 6 2/3 scoreless innings at Cleveland in the wild card game last Wednesday. The Boston native allowed a total of three runs in 30 innings while striking out 31 over his last four starts. Cobb had trouble with the Red Sox, however, going 0-1 with a 5.16 ERA in four starts against his hometown team during the regular season.

TRENDS:

* Rays are 0-4 in Cobb's last four starts vs. Red Sox.
* Under is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
* Red Sox are 11-3 in Buchholz's last 14 Monday starts.
* Road team is 6-1 in Dana DeMuth's last seven Monday games behind home plate.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Saturday marked the first multi-homer game of Ortiz’s postseason career. He is 1-for-6 lifetime against Cobb.

2. Myers is 1-for-13 with five strikeouts in his first three postseason games.

3. Boston closer Koji Uehara threw 11 pitches - all strikes - in earning the save in Game 2.

Monday Night Football betting: Jets at Falcons

New York Jets at Atlanta Falcons (-10, 44)

The Atlanta Falcons have made three straight postseason appearances and won a pair of division titles in that span, but they are venturing into must-win territory entering Monday night's home matchup with the New York Jets. The Falcons already trail NFC South front-runner New Orleans by three games and will be out to avoid a third straight defeat for the first time since 2007. The Jets will look to bounce back from a turnover-riddled loss at Tennessee last week.

New York, and rookie quarterback Geno Smith in particular, hardly looked ready for prime time against the Titans and managed only a single touchdown for the third time in four games. Smith, who won the quarterback job when incumbent Mark Sanchez suffered a serious shoulder injury in the preseason, committed four turnovers that Tennessee turned into 28 points. It's something that has to stop now in order for us to progress and to get better as an offense and as a team," Smith conceded.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, ESPN.
LINE: The Falcons opened -9.5 and are now -10. The total is currently 44.
WEATHER: N/A

ABOUT THE JETS (2-2): Smith needs to curb his string of mistakes after throwing eight interceptions and turning over the ball 11 times through four games, tying for the league lead. That task could be arduous if Smith is without starting wide receivers Santonio Holmes (hamstring) and Stephen Hill (concussion), who had each gone over 100 yards in a Week 3 victory over the Buffalo Bills. Holmes had only one reception last week before he was injured and voiced his displeasure about it this week, saying, "I can’t throw it to myself and catch it. Otherwise I would."

ABOUT THE FALCONS (1-3): Atlanta continues to lament its inability to convert in the red zone, but a bigger issue has been a defense that has yet to hold an opponent under 23 points, has produced only seven sacks and is allowing 26 points and a robust 393.3 yards per game. Matt Ryan threw for a career-high 421 yards in last week's 30-23 loss to New England but the offense has been inconsistent without a healthy Roddy White (10 catches) and running back Steven Jackson, who will miss his third straight game with a hamstring injury. Wideout Julio Jones leads the league with 481 receiving yards.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-0 in the Falcons last four home games.
* Falcons are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games overall.
* Jets are 5-1 ATS in their last six games in October.
* Under is 4-1 in Jets last five road games.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Ryan is 34-6 at home, including wins in 12 of his last 14 games.

2. RB Mike Goodson is expected to make his debut with the Jets after serving a four-game suspension for violating the league's drug policy.

3. Jones is aiming for his fourth consecutive 100-yard game.

NFL betting: Monday Night Football on over trend

The 'over' has been the trend through the first four weeks of Monday Night Football.

After the first five games on Monday night through the first quarter of the regular season (Week 1 had a MNF double header), the over has posted a record of 4-1.

The only matchup not to soar over the total was the Week 2 meeting between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals won 20-10 with the total set at 40.

Granted, we've seen some of the most potent offenses in the league on Monday night to start the season. The Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints have all played on Monday night thus far.

Week 5 brings us the New York Jets (3-1 O/U) at Atlanta Falcons (3-1 O/U). The total is currently 44.

Cardinals at Pirates: What bettors need to know

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates (+107, 7.5)

Pirates lead series 2-1.

Having already put an end to a 21-year postseason drought, the Pittsburgh Pirates are on the brink of winning their first playoff series in 34 years. The Pirates will look for the clincher when they host the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Monday afternoon. Pittsburgh took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series with a dramatic 5-3 victory in Sunday's Game 3, improving to 8-3 at home this season against the Cardinals.

St. Louis is pinning its hopes on 22-year-old rookie right-hander Michael Wacha to keep its season alive and force a winner-take-all Game 5 in St. Louis on Wednesday. The Pirates will counter with Charlie Morton, who has lost six consecutive decisions to the Cardinals and has not beaten them since April 4, 2011. Carlos Beltran has two homers and six RBIs in the series for St. Louis while Pedro Alvarez has two blasts and four RBIs for Pittsburgh.

TV: 3:07 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the mid-50s. Wind will blow out to left field at 15 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (4-1, 2.78 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Charlie Morton (7-4, 3.26)

Wacha forced his way into the playoff rotation with a stellar final month, not allowing a run in three of five outings in September and coming within one out of a no-hitter in his last start. He allowed only an infield single with out outs in the ninth and struck out a season-high nine to beat Washington on Sept. 24. Wacha also pitched seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball versus the Pirates on Sept. 8.

Morton has never had much success against the Cardinals and that continued this season with an 0-2 record, 7.90 ERA and .397 batting average against in three starts. That included a disastrous outing against Wacha last month in which he allowed five runs in a season-low 1 2/3 innings before leaving with a foot injury. Morton was a much better pitcher at home, logging a 2-2 record and 2.85 ERA in nine starts.

TRENDS:

* Over is 3-0-1 in Morton's last four starts vs. Cardinals.
* Cardinals are 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Cardinals are 0-5 in their last five during Game 4 of a series.
* Pirates are 7-1 in their last eight games as an underdog.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Pittsburgh trade-deadline acquisition Marlon Byrd has five RBIs in four postseason games, including the wild-card win over Cincinnati.

2. CF Jon Jay (8-for-16), C Yadier Molina (8-for-19) and Beltran (6-for-15) are all batting .400 or better versus Morton.

3. Beltran hit his 16th postseason homer Sunday, surpassing Babe Ruth for eighth place on the career list.

NHL betting: Road faves 4-0 to start the season

The Vancouver Canucks dispatched the Calgary Flames 5-4 in overtime to improve the unblemished record of the road favorite to 4-0 thus far in the NHL season.

Any $100 bettor would be up $345.62 if they had wagered on each road favorite so far on the ice.

Devils at Oilers: What bettors need to know

New Jersey Devils at Edmonton Oilers (-127, 5.5)

The New Jersey Devils take to the road in search of their first victory as they begin a five-game trip against the Edmonton Oilers on Monday. With Ilya Kovalchuk and his hefty contract now a memory, New Jersey fired blanks in its season opener en route to a 3-0 loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Newcomer Damien Brunner impressed in the Devils' first home game by scoring twice, but the club fell 4-3 in a shootout to the New York Islanders on Friday.

Edmonton still is looking for its first point of the campaign after dropping a 5-4 decision to the Winnipeg Jets in its home opener and being routed in Vancouver 6-2 by the Canucks on Saturday. The young trio of Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Nail Yakupov has combined for one assist over the first two contests while Boyd Gordon leads the club with two goals. The Oilers could receive a boost as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is expected to make his season debut following offseason shoulder surgery.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New Jersey), RSN West (Edmonton)

ABOUT THE DEVILS (0-1-1): It will be interesting to see how coach Peter DeBoer handles the club's goaltending situation. The newly acquired Cory Schneider got the nod in the season-opening game in Pittsburgh, while future Hall-of-Famer Martin Brodeur started his 19th consecutive home opener Friday. Brodeur is likely to get the call Monday as the Devils visit Schneider's former team in Vancouver the following night.

ABOUT THE OILERS (0-2-0): Nugent-Hopkins is returning sooner than expected, as he was not projected to join the lineup until November. "I'm feeling really good," he told the team's website. "The healing is done and my strength is up where it needs to be." Jason LaBarbera will start Monday instead of Devan Dubnyk, who allowed 10 goals on 59 shots over the first two games of the campaign.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Edmonton.
* Devils are 5-1 in the last six meetings in Edmonton.
* Oilers are 1-7 in their last eight home games.
* Under is 6-1 in Devils last seven vs. Pacific.

OVERTIME:

1. Gordon scored four goals in 48 games with Phoenix last season and had a career high of eight for the Coyotes the previous campaign.

2. New Jersey C Jacob Josefson has yet to make his season debut, as he was a healthy scratch for each of the team's first two contests.

3. The Oilers host Montreal on Thursday before embarking on a six-game road trip that begins Saturday in Toronto.

Falcons look to end losing skid Monday vs. Jets
by Zach Cohen

Kickoff: Monday, 8:40 p.m. ET
Line: Atlanta -9, Total: 44

The Falcons look to get back on track when the Jets come to town on Monday night.

Atlanta was unable to beat the Patriots Sunday night, losing 30-23 and falling to 1-3 on the year. The Jets also came away empty-handed in Week 4, as they were destroyed on the road against the Titans, 38-13. Since 1995, the Falcons are 3-1 (SU and ATS) against the Jets producing double-digit wins in each home meeting. The last matchup between these teams was a 10-7 win-and-cover in favor of the Falcons in December 2009 in New Jersey. Both teams are staring at negative trends for this game. Over the past two seasons, the Jets are 0-8 ATS off of 1 or more overs in a row, and are also 31-55 ATS (36%) off of a road loss since 1992. Atlanta, however, is 15-31 ATS (33%) in home games after playing a game at home since 1992 and is 3-17 ATS (15%) after gaining 375 or more total yards in two consecutive games during that span. The Jets are going to be without top WR Santonio Holmes (hamstring), while top TE Kellen Winslow is questionable with a knee injury. The Falcons must continue to run without their star RB Steven Jackson, who is out for another two weeks with a hamstring injury.

The Jets are now 2-2 SU (3-1 ATS) after suffering a beatdown against the Titans in which Jake Locker threw all over their defense before going down with a hip injury. New York rookie QB Geno Smith followed up his best performance of the year with a subpar outing, as he went 23-of-34 for 289 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT. In his two road games, Smith has thrown 1 TD and 5 INT. Smith also lost two fumbles in the game, including a truly bone-headed one where he tried to put the ball behind his own back to avoid a pass rusher. RB Bilal Powell played well in the game for New York, rushing for 66 yards on 14 carries while also catching three passes for 42 yards. After gaining just 3.1 YPC in his first two games, Powell has averaged a stellar 5.2 YPC over his past two contests. TE Kellen Winslow was the Jets’ leader in the receiving game with six catches for 73 yards, and he and WR Stephen Hill will likely be Smith's top targets with the injury to WR Santonio Holmes. New York’s defense struggled to stop the Titans, but the offense didn’t help them by giving the Titans good field position all game. The Jets D has really played well all season, leading the NFL with 14 first downs per game allowed and placing second in the league in total defense (283 total YPG, 4.3 yards per play allowed) and yards per carry (3.0 YPC). But it all starts with Smith having to play mistake-free football if the Jets are to have a chance to keep this game close against the Falcons.

Atlanta nearly pulled out an amazing win on Sunday night, trailing 30-13 with less than five minutes to play and giving itself a chance to tie the game when a fourth down pass from the Patriots 10-yard-line fell incomplete. Falcons QB Matt Ryan threw plenty of passes in this game trying to bring his team back from a large deficit, as he went 34-for-54 for 421 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT. He now has 1,330 passing yards (7.7 YPA), 8 TD and 3 INT on the year and will be asked to throw a lot without top RB Steven Jackson and due to the Jets' run defense being so difficult to gain yards on. TE Tony Gonzalez finally turned in the performance Atlanta fans have been waiting for with 12 receptions for 149 yards and 2 TD versus New England. He entered the game with just 11 catches for 93 yards and 1 TD in his first three games combined. WR Julio Jones had 108 yards on six catches in last week's loss, but outside of one 49-yard play, Patriots CB Aqib Talib did a pretty good job shutting the superstar down. Jones leads the NFL with 481 receiving yards, including 218 yards after catch (2nd in league), but WR Roddy White (high ankle sprain) is getting healthier each week and was able to play on 74 of 76 offensive snaps last Sunday. With six straight seasons of 80+ catches and 1,150+ yards, White is expected to give this offense another boost. Where the Falcons really struggled in Week 4 was in the running game where they got just 58 yards combined from RBs Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling on 15 carries (3.9 YPC). For the season, Atlanta ranks 23rd in the NFL in rushing offense (82 YPG), despite a strong 4.4 yards per carry (11th in league). Defensively, the Falcons have done an excellent job stopping the run (92 YPG, 6th in NFL), but have been burned for 301 passing YPG (7th-most in league). That is a big reason why opponents have 6.1 yards per play against them, the fourth-most in the NFL. Injuries to CB Asante Samuel (thigh) and LB Akeem Dent (ankle) are not helping the cause. Both players are listed as questionable for Monday night.

NY JETS (437) AT ATLANTA (438)
Latest Line: Atlanta -9.0; Total: 44.0

The slumping Falcons look to get back in the win column when they host the Jets Monday night. New York has a minus-8 turnover margin in two road losses this season, and was crushed 38-13 at Tennessee last week. Although Atlanta is 1-3 SU, the three defeats have been by a total of 17 points to teams with a combined 11-1 SU record. This will be a game of contrasting style with the Jets looking to run the football with RB Bilal Powell (215 rushing yards in past two weeks) to control the clock, while the Falcons aim to air it out, especially with top RB Steven Jackson (hamstring) still out. Atlanta QB Matt Ryan has thrown for 333 YPG and 8 TD this year. The Falcons are 4-1 SU (3-1-1 ATS) in the past five meetings, including an ugly 10-7 road win when they last met the Jets in 2009.

Pick: Boston -110 (moneyline) at BetOnline

It has started to look like the energy the Rays spent to just get to the post-season has left this team tired and searching for answers. The answers will be even harder to find today facing Clay Buchholz, who if not for a mid-season injury, may have been a Cy Young winner. Buchholz has had an amazing season at 12-1 with a 1.71 ERA. He hasn't skipped a beat since coming back allowing a total of five runs in four starts. One of those starts was a five inning, 0 run performance against this Tampa team. Cobb has struggled in his four starts vs. the Red Sox where he is winless with a 5.16 ERA. Boston owns a 28-6 record behind Buchholz with a money line from -110 to -150. The Rays have dropped five straight post-season home games. Play this one on Boston.

On Monday the free MLB National League Divisional series Play is on the St. Louis Cardinals. Game 927 at 3:05 eastern. The Cardinals find themselves down in this series after dropping last nights game 5-3 here in Pittsburgh. St. Louis does bounce back well though as they are 12-2 this season as a road favorite off a road loss. The Pirates are 0-5 as a home dog off a home favored win by 2 or more runs. St. Louis has M. Wacha making the start and he went 7 strong shutout innings allowing just 2 hits vs the Pirates earlier in the season. He will oppose C. Morton tonight and Morton has not fared well in starts vs the Cardinals as he has a 6.52 era. He has lost all 3 home starts vs the Cardinals and allowed 5 earned runs in 6 innings here in an earlier start vs the Cardinals. Look for St. Louis to send this one back to St. Louis for a series deciding game five. On Monday we have two 5* Plays. The NFL Total tonight has 2 Perfect 100% Totals systems. Football combined continues to rank at or near the top of All Major Leader boards after we cashed the top play AFC total of the Year on Sunday. OC Dooley:1 UNIT” AFTERNOON BASEBALL PLAYOFF SIDE (Pirates +100 at home versus Cardinals in a 3:07 eastern start on TBS------Wacha versus Morton): This potentially will be a very special afternoon in the city of Pittsburgh as the baseball Pirates are on the brink of finally winning a postseason series since way back in 1979 when they ran the table with the “we are family” contingent led by stars Willie Stargell and Dave Parker. For the Pirates who set a professional sports record for futility going more than 20 consecutive seasons with below .500 record outputs, the fact that they are on the brink of winning this Divisional series against one of baseball’s deeper rosters is remarkable. It is imperative that Pittsburgh gets the job done this afternoon since in game-five they would have to deal with the only pitcher in the St. Louis rotation (ace Adam Wainwright) who has postseason experience. Yesterday the young pitchers from the rotation to the bullpen failed for the Cardinals who saw Kevin Siegrist permit a game-winning single in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was back in frame #6 that Seth Maneus out of the Cardinals bullpen yielded a sacrifice fly. Since St. Louis is sending yet another rookie to the mound today (Michael Wacha) the bullpen undoubtedly will be tested again including rookie closer Trevor Rosenthal who was thrust into the job when veteran Edward Mujica literally ran out of gas in the stretch run

Taking the FALCONS here. Yes, this is a banged up group. Yes, I think the road team has the better defense. But after a tough loss last Sunday night, the Falcons are in a desperation mode right here. They have their bye coming up to get healthy, but at 1-3 they need any and all wins right now. I thought the Jets would be terrible. They are better than expected I guess because of their defensive play. But I think Matty 'Ice' and friends will do enough to get us a double-digit win here. I thought NYJ had the worse offensive personnel to begin with. Now they have lost their top 2 WRs which brings the talent level down another notch. You want to know why Atlanta is now 34-8 SU at home under HC Mike Smith? It's because they beat the crap out of bad teams like the Jets when they come to town. Falcons head into their bye on a winning note. 5* Best Bet ATLANTA FALCONS

Where the action is: Public pushes Monday spread three points

The Falcons welcome the Jets to Atlanta for Monday Night Football. We talk to sportsbooks about the action coming in on this Week 5 finale:

New York Jets at Atlanta Falcons – Open: -7.5, Move: -10.5, Move: -10

Books opened the Falcons as low as 7.5-point home favorites, and have been the public choice since post. Atlanta has jumped as many as three points at some books, with both public and sharp money on the home team.

According to Mike Perry of Sportsbook.com, 72 percent of the action for this game is on Atlanta, pushing the spread through the key number of -10. However, once the spread got to 10.5, money came back on New York, buying up the inflated underdog.

As for the total, the number opened at 44 points and dropped a bit to 43.5 before money came back on the Over and has the over/under sitting as high as 44.5 at some books. Like most Monday games, the public sides with the favorite and the Over, and Week 5 is no different.
