Temple and Cincinnati: What bettors need to know

Temple Owls at Cincinnati Bearcats (-20.5, 51.5)

Cincinnati on Saturday looks to bounce back from last week’s upset loss to previously winless South Florida when the Bearcats host Temple, which is seeking its first victory under first-year coach Matt Rhule. The Owls are coming off a 30-7 loss to No. 8 Louisville, while Cincinnati lost 26-20 at South Florida after falling behind 23-6 at the half. "We're going to have to get much better to have the opportunity to win games," Bearcats coach Tommy Tuberville said. "We have to get physical and we have to block somebody."

The Bearcats have been wildly inconsistent since routing Purdue 42-7 in its season opener, but they’ll be heavy favorites against a Temple squad allowing 518 yards per game - fourth-worst in the country. Freshman quarterback P.J. Walker is set to make his first start for the Owls in place of junior Connor Reilly, who was benched after another slow start against Louisville. Bearcats quarterback Brendon Kay, who is expected to start despite suffering a bruised sternum last week, threw two touchdown passes in last season's 34-10 victory at Temple.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Cincinnati opened at -21.5 and has been bet down to 20.5. The total has stayed steady at 51.5.

WEATHER: Temperatures in the low 60s with clear skies and winds blowing NE at 4 mph.

ABOUT TEMPLE (0-5, 0-2 American Athletic Conference, 2-3 ATS): Walker, last year’s top New Jersey high school player, took over on the Owls’ third series against Louisville and provided a spark with 182 passing yards and a touchdown. Junior running back Kenny Harper has a team-high six touchdowns on 56 carries for the Owls, who have trailed at halftime in four of their first five games. Temple’s young defense is led by sophomore linebacker Tyler Matakevich, who averages an NCAA-best 10.8 solo tackles per game.

ABOUT CINCINNATI (3-2, 0-1, 2-3 ATS): Tuberville called out his veteran offensive line after the Bearcats rushed for a season-low 110 yards against South Florida last week. While the offense has struggled to establish an identity, Cincinnati ranks third nationally in total defense with linebackers Nick Temple, Jeff Luc and Greg Blair (team-high 32 tackles) leading the way. The special teams unit has become a major concern for Cincinnati, which has missed its last three field goal attempts and ranks 118th nationally in net punting.

TRENDS:

* Owls are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
* Bearcats are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 games overall.
* Under is 12-5 in Owls' last 17 road games.
* Over is 5-1 in Bearcats' last six Friday games.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Cincinnati has won 10 of its last 11 home games.

2. The Owls have not intercepted a pass this season.

3. The Bearcats have not allowed an offensive touchdown since the second quarter of the Northwestern State game on Sept. 14, a span of 10 quarters.

Lions at Stampeders: What bettors need to know

B.C. Lions at Calgary Stampederes (-7, 53)

The BC Lions are struggling to maintain their position in the West Division after suffering a rare home loss, but their confidence in backup quarterback Thomas DeMarco gives them a chance when they visit the division-leading Calgary Stampeders on Friday. DeMarco has shown flashes of injured starter Travis Lulay in the two games since Lulay suffered a separated shoulder, throwing for 286 yards and recording a 21-yard run last week against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Unfortunately for the Lions, DeMarco also threw three picks in that contest, something he’ll need to control better against a Calgary defense that has 18 interceptions.

The Stampeders have dealt with their share of injuries to key personnel and it has not slowed them at all as veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn can attest. Even though starting pivot Drew Tate was 3-for-4 last week in his first pass attempts since Week 2, Glenn’s strong performance in Tate’s absence (169-for-247 passing with 14 touchdowns to five interceptions) will make him tough to bench. With other important players such as wide receiver Joe West in full health as well, Calgary’s problems are ones most teams would love to have.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, TSN

LINE: Calgary opened as a 7.5-point home favorite and has been bet down to -7. The total is steady at 53.

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 40s (9 degrees) with partly cloudy skies and a 30 percent chance of rain with winds blowing SE at 3 mph.

ABOUT THE LIONS (9-5, 7-7 ATS): BC’s defense averages a league-best 246.7 passing yards allowed and is second in rushing yards allowed per game with 86.6. Linebackers Adam Bighill and Solomon Elimimian play a big part in containing opposing offenses, with Bighill leading the team with with 72 tackles and six sacks, while Elimimian has 53 tackles, two sacks and three interceptions. Veteran quarterback Buck Pierce has seen limited snaps since arriving from the BC Lions, completing 6-of-13 passes as he becomes reacquainted with the team that launched his CFL career.

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (11-3, 9-5 ATS): West caught eight passes for 120 yards in his first action since injuring his shoulder in Week 4. Running back Jon Cornish was named offensive player of the week and Canadian player of the week after rushing for a season-high 208 yards with two touchdowns against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to overtake Kory Sheets for the league rushing lead. Cornish led the league in rushing last season with a career-high 1,457 yards and is 42 yards away from matching that total with four games remaining.

TRENDS:

* Lions are 6-14-1 ATS in their last 21 meetings.
* Lions are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 road games.
* Over is 4-1 in Lions last five road games.
* Over is 9-2 in Stampeders last 11 home games.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Calgary K Rene Paredes leads the league in kicking points with 166 - four shy of his career-best. Paredes has made 41-of-43 field goal attempts.

2. The Stampeders are tied for the league lead in sacks with 48.

3. BC is 3-4 on the road; Calgary is 6-1 at home.

Dodgers at Cardinals: What bettors need to know

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals (+104, 7)

Two of baseball's storied franchises square off when the St. Louis Cardinals host the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series. The Dodgers surged into contention with a ridiculous 42-8 stretch and haven't let up, bludgeoning the Atlanta Braves into submission in four games in the NL Division Series. Los Angeles also has a steller rotation led by likely Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw and Game 1 starter Zack Greinke.

St. Louis advanced to its third straight NLCS - and eighth since 2000 - by outlasting Pittsburgh in five games behind ace Adam Wainwright, who will be unavailable until Game 3 in Los Angeles. The Cardinals can't match the muscle of the Dodgers but they have a deep and balanced lineup that led the NL in runs and doubles. Joe Kelly will start the opener for St. Louis, which won the final two games of the NLDS to improve to 8-1 in playoff elimination games since 2011.

TV: 8:37 p.m. ET, TBS

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid 70s with partly cloudy skies and winds blowing south at 8 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (0-1, 3.00 ERA) vs. RH Joe Kelly (0-0, 3.38)

Greinke went 15-4 with a 2.63 ERA in the regular season but lost the Dodgers' only game in the NLDS despite allowing two runs on four hits in six innings. He was 7-2 on the road but his ERA (3.21) was more than a run worst and batting average against (.263 against .207) was substantially higher than at Dodger Stadium. Greinke won at St. Louis on Aug. 5, allowing two runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Kelly did not factor in the decision after giving up three runs in 5 1/3 innings of a Game 3 loss in Pittsburgh. Kelly went 10-5 with a 2.69 ERA during the regular season, including 10-2 as a starter after he was inserted into the rotation in early July. The 25-year-old Kelly was outstanding at home with a 5-1 record in eight starts, including 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball against the Dodgers on Aug. 6.

TRENDS:

* Dodgers are 17-35 in the last 52 meetings in St. Louis.
* Cardinals are 36-15 in their last 51 home games.
* Dodgers are 35-16 in their last 51 road games.
* Over is 6-1 in Cardinals' last seven playoff games.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Los Angeles went 4-3 against the Cardinals during the regular season, winning three of four in St. Louis in early August.

2. SS Hanley Ramirez batted .500 and RF Yasiel Puig .471 while Carl Crawford and Juan Uribe combined to hit five homers as the Dodgers set an NL postseason series record with .333 team batting average versus Atlanta.

3. RF Carlos Beltran has been immense in the postseason with career totals of 16 homers and 31 RBIs in 39 games, but the Cardinals need more from 2B Matt Carpenter, who was 1-for-19 in the NLDS after collecting a league-high 199 hits in the regular season.

NASCAR betting: Bank of America 500 preview

The Chase for the Championship marches into Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Bank of America 500 Saturday. Here’s a quick look at three drivers to watch when the Sprint Cup takes to the 1.5-mile quad oval track:

Favorite

Matt Kenseth (+400)

The current points leader is sliding back a bit after back-to-back wins in September. Kenseth followed a seventh-place showing at Dover with an 11th-place finish at Kansas last weekend. The No. 20 car has an average finish of 11.38 at Charlotte and placed 15th there in the Coca-Cola 600 back in May. Kenseth has been dominant on tri-oval tracks, with an average finish of 8.04 over the past three years.

Live underdog

Brad Keselowski (+1,800)

Keselowski may not be among the 13 Chase contenders but there’s no lack of motivation for the No. 2 Ford. He’s in a very vocal battle with Kyle Busch and would love nothing more than to stick it to his rival with a win at Charlotte Saturday. He’s among the best tri-oval drivers in NASCAR and boasts three wins on those intermediate tracks since 2011. With Keselowski outside of the Chase looking in, there is added value in his outright odds.

Long shot

Jamie McMurray (+10,000)

For a guy sitting first among non-Chase contenders, McMurray is sure getting some tasty odds this weekend. He’s been among the best drivers the past six races, posting an average finish of 11th – sixth best in all of the Sprint Cup. McMurray has two Top-5 finishes in his last five races, and while he hasn’t run well at Charlotte for his career, he did win one of the Sprint Cup Showdowns in Concord, NC back in May.

Key stat: Just 14 of the 109 races at Charlotte have been won by the pole sitter (12.8 percent). Jimmie Johnson is the last do it in 2004 and 2009.

Odds to win Bank of America 500 at TopBet.eu:

Matt Kenseth 4-1
Kyle Busch 6-1
Kasey Kahne 7-1
Joey Logano 10-1
Jeff Gordon 10-1

Kevin Harvick 10-1

20* Temple/Cincinnati ESPN Friday Total DOMINATOR on UNDER 51.5

I fully expect a defensive battle Friday night between Temple and Cincinnati in American Athletic Conference action. While Cincinnati may get to 30 points by game's end, I don't see Temple being able to surpass 10-14 points in this one. I expect somewhere in the neighborhood of a 31-10 final.

Cincinnati has been atrocious offensively in games outside of Purdue and Northwestern. I managed just 17 points against Illinois, scored 14 points against Miami Ohio with both touchdowns coming in the fourth quarter, and managed just 20 points against winless South Florida.

What has been the saving grace for the Bearcats is a defense that is one of the best in the entire country. They are giving up just 17.4 points and 251.0 total yards per game to rank 4th in the FBS in total defense.

I look for this fierce Cincinnati defense to completely shut down a very suspect Temple offense. In fact, the Owls are scoring just 15.8 points per game while averaging 342.4 yards per game to rank 102nd in the FBS in total offense.

Four out of five of Temple's games this season have seen 50 or less combined points. Those four were losses to Notre Dame (6-28), Houston (13-22), Idaho (24-26) and Louisville (7-30). Three of Cincinnati's five games have seen 49 or less combined points. They were wins over Purdue (42-7) and Miami Ohio (14-0), as well as a loss to South Florida (20-26).

Last year, Cincinnati beat Temple 34-10 on the road as an 8-point favorite with a total set of 55 points. Cincinnati outgained Temple 472-267 in the win. I look for the Bearcats to get a big lead early into the 3rd quarter, and to run out the clock with their solid rushing attack that is averaging 200 yards per game.

The UNDER is 35-20 in Cincinnati's last 55 home games. The UNDER is 24-9 in Cincinnati's last 33 October games. The UNDER is 12-5 in Temple's last 17 road games. The UNDER is 5-1 in Bearcats last 6 vs. a team with a losing record. The UNDER is 4-1-1 in Owls last 6 games overall. Bet the UNDER in this game Friday.

2 UNIT = Los Angeles Dodgers @ St Louis Cardinals - OVER 7 RUNS (-109)
Listed Pitchers: Greinke vs Kelly
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.83 units)

These two teams have met 7 times this season with totals of 7, 8, 8, 5, 6, 17, and 6. Although most of those games featured some great pitchers, we saw an average total of just over 8 as both teams have great offenses. During the regular season the St Louis Cardinals were 4th in the Majors in team batting average, and 10th in OPS. The Dodgers got off to a slow start, but still finished 6th in team batting average and 13th in OPS. In the divisional series' the Dodgers were by far the best hitting team vs the Braves as they had a team batting average of .333, .390 OBP, and .962 OPS. The Cardinals faced some tough pitchers, and didn't fare as well offensively - although they did hit much better at home with a team .730 OPS. Zack Greinke will get the ball in game 1 for the Dodgers. He was 15-4 this year with a 2.63 ERA, .234 OBa and 1.11 WHIP, but his numbers were much different at home than on the road. At home he had a 2.11 ERA and .207 OBA, but on the road he had a 3.21 ERA and .263 OBA. The last time he faced the Cardinals he gave up 8 hits in 6.1 innings, although he did only allow 2 runs. He has a career 3.10 ERA vs the Cardinals. Joe Kelly will go for St Louis after pitching 5.1 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned) in his DS start. During the regular season he was 10-5 with a 2.69 ERA, but his numbers at home weren't as good as they were on the road. At home he was 5-4 with a 3.29 ERA, .279 OBA and 1.44 WHIP (compared to 2.07 ERA, .237 OBA and 1.26 WHIP on the road). Note that the OVER was 4-0 in the Dodgers NLDS series, and 5-0 in their last 5 road games vs a team with a winning record. The OVER is 6-1 in the Cardinals last 7 playoff games, 3-0-1 in their last 4 as a home underdog, and 8-0 in their last 8 playoff games as an underdog. The OVER is also 5-0-1 in Kelly's last 6 starts overall and 4-0 when he's going on 4 days rest. The OVER is also 9-3-1 in Kelly's last 13 home starts. Take the OVER tonight for 2 units, and lets keep it going.

NCAA Football Play of the Day October 11, 2013 6:46 AM by GT Staff

Temple at Cincinnati at 5:30 p.m. PST

The Owls not much on scoring this year and have yet to win a game but they did manage to get the cover against Notre Dame and against Louisville when getting the big points. They get the big points again tonight. The Bearcats last two games have been nothing to write home about, they could only beat hapless Miami Oho 14-0 and last to USF last week as a -11 point chalk. The stats also say that they have gone 0-7 ATS against winless conference teams.

When breaking down the game though we see that Cincy has a defense that is over 260 yards better than Temple and an offense that is 110 yards better, Cincy should win pretty easily here tonight against a winless Temple team that has lost games to Fordham and Idaho, teams that get blown out weekly. The Bear cats should be focused here after losing 2 weeks ago on the road as a double digit favorite to South Florida. Cincy is a much better home team and beat a Purdue team here by 28 that is better than Temple. In last years game Cincy coasted to a 34-10 win at Temple. The Bearcats have covered 4 of the last 5 at home when the total is 49.5 to 56. Look for Cincinnati to win and cover. On Friday we have a Big 5* Side in Game 1 of the National League Championship series And an Early 5* Blowout in an Early College Football game from a 100% System that dates to 1978. LA Dodgers (Greinke) (-120) at St. Louis (Kelly) 8:35 ET TBS
4* St. Louis (+110)

Greinke clearly has the greater experience and has pitched well the entire season with the Dodgers winning 22 /28 of his starts. Though Puig is given credit for keying the 42-8 mid-season surge, that record also correlates to the time at which Greinke returned from a brief stint on the DL. Before you get too excited about the team with the $220,000,000 payroll, consider that when not playing at an .840 clip during that streak, the Dodgers were 54-63. That includes 23-21 since the end of that blitz. Kelly was a pleasant surprise when inserted in the rotation at mid-season. St. Louis won 11 of his 15 starts. The St. Louis home field has been strong all season with a record of 56-28. But that was even more true down the stretch when the Cards went 22-4 on this field. St. Louis has also saved their best baseball for the end of the season as they enter today on current runs of 31-15 and 19-7. A value based opinion on St. Louis as underdog.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. St Louis Cardinals (MLB) - 8:30 PM EDT
Premium Pick: Total: 7.0/-115 Over
10-unit Play Take Los Angeles Dodgers/St. Louis Cardinals - OVER (8:35pm EST)

The National League Championship Series gets underway tonight as the St. Louis Cardinals host the Los Angeles Dodgers. I expect plenty of fireworks in this series as we have the two most powerful offenses in the league facing off against one another. Most people immediately think of Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke as the anchors for this Dodgers team that won 92 games this season. However, their offense was tops in the NL on a park-adjusted basis and carried them many times throughout the season. They also didn't even have Hanley Ramirez and Yasiel Puig for the first two months of the season, which depressed their overall numbers a bit. Tonight they'll get their whacks against right-hander Joe Kelly. The 25-year old had a decent season but was fortunate to post a 2.69 ERA. Based on his peripheral statistics (WHIP, K/BB rate and GB/FB ratio), Kelly pitched more like a pitcher that should carry an ERA in the low 4's. He also pitched out of the pen for the majority of the season and wasn't a mainstay in the rotation until August. In his only postseason start against the Pirates, Kelly was mediocre at best as he only went 5 1/3 innings while allowing three runs and walking four batters. I would be surprised he pitches any better against a much more dangerous Dodgers lineup. For the Cardinals, they go up against Zack Greinke. He's obviously one of the better pitchers in the game, but he's very average on the road over the last few seasons. In fact, his ERA's on the road over the last four seasons were 3.21, 3.91, 4.70 and 4.06. He is much more comfortable at home, so manager Don Mattingly would probably be better served to have Greinke pitch Game 3 in Los Angeles rather than the opener in St. Louis. I wouldn't be surprised if the Cards give Greinke a hard time in this one and bounce him before he can get through a full six innings. We should see plenty of runs from both teams here today in Game One, so we're on the Over as our 10-unit Game.

CINCINNATI (-20.5) over Temple
9 p.m. ET

Nice winner last night here with San Diego State (-3) over Air Force. Tonight we'll go with another favorite.
Following a stunning 26-20 loss to South Florida last week as a 10-point favorite, the Bearcats and head coach Tommy Tuberville are in a must-win situation here tonight as fans and alumni are getting antsy. The loss to the Bulls last week was a bit misleading. South Florida did not score an offensive TD in the game and got a couple of huge breaks when it returned a blocked field goal and a fumble for touchdowns. Overall, Cinci turned the ball over five times, the primary reason for the loss.

The Bearcats defense has been rock-solid all season, holding four of its five opponents to less than 250 yards of total offense. Temple is 0-5 straight up with disheartening losses to teams like Fordham and Idaho. The Owls have been overpowered by the more physical teams they have played, allowing over 500 yards of offense per game, and with the Bearcats in an angry mood, theyll have no mercy.

Cinci has always played well in front of its home crowd, going 2-0 ATS this season and 10-5 the last three years. Over the past 10 years the Bearcats have covered 57% of their games on this field. Lay the lumber.

L.A DODGERS -120
(Greinke/Kelly)

The Cardinals are amazing at home and that is why this game is so crucial to the Dodgers with Zack Grienke on the mound tonight. L.A paid a lot of money for some key players in the offseason and this is where their investment needs to pay off. I dont think there are too many pitchers that can be mentioned in the likes of Greinke. This is going to be a great series. Take the Dodgers.

SLAPSHOT CLUB: NHL ROADKILL WINNER!
Game Date/Time: 10/11/13 8:05 pm
Our Selection: Blackhawks Opponent: Islanders Line: -176
At 8:05 pm, our selection is on the Chicago Blackhawks over the New York Islanders.
The Blackhawks haven't exactly gotten off to the start that a defending Stanley Cup Champion would hope for. Chicago has one victory in its first three games and has scored three goals just once in the process, but has allowed that many in all three of its games. The 'Hawks can't exactly blame their slow start on injuries as this team is pretty much 100% healthy right now, so we'll chalk up their slow start to some unlucky puck bounces that didn't go Chicago's way. The Isles have won two of their first three games, but the teams they've beaten are the New Jersey Devils and Phoenix Coyotes, while New York's lone loss came at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets (in a shootout) so it's safe to say this will be the Islanders' toughest test of the season so far. The Blackhawks have their lone victory at home as well as the overtime loss against the Lightning and that's been a key to their success as last season Chicago only had three losses in regulation on home ice (out of 24 home games). Even though the Blackhawks are 1-1 at home thi season, they've outshot their foes 73-48 in those two games. The Blackhawks are 3-0 in the last three meetings vs. the Isles, while the home team has won four of the last six. Take Chicago.

16-3 MLB TOTALS WINNER!
Game Date/Time: 10/11/13 8:35 pm
Our Selection: Cardinals/Dodgers 'over' Line: 7

At 8:35 pm, our selection is on the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals - 'Over' the total.
There may be people that feel that putting an inexperienced pitcher like Joe Kelly out on the mound in game one of an NLCS is a losing strategy. But folks who feel that way likely haven't looked at Kelly's record going back the last two months of the regular season. In fact, if you look at what Kelly has done for the Cards since the beginning of August, you can't help but feel that his team is in very good hands tonight in game one of the NLCS at home. The Cards won each of Kelly's six starts in August, and followed that up by winning four of his six outings in September. But if you look beyond the won-lost records, you will also notice that the Cards almost always show up at the plate when Kelly starts. In fact, in those last 12 starts going back to August 1, the Cards have plated a total of 83 runs or an average of almost seven runs per game. It turns out that Kelly had some of the highest run support numbers of any pitcher in the National League this season and he'll be counting on that support tonight in just his second-ever post-season start. The over is 7-0 in the Dodgers last seven playoff games and 9-3-1 in Kelly's last 13 home starts.
Take the 'Over.'
