Tuesday's NCAAF action: What bettors need to know

Ohio Bobcats at Bowling Green Falcons (-10, 49)

Second place in the Mid-American Conference's East Division will be on the line Tuesday night when the Bowling Green Falcons entertain the Ohio Bobcats. Bowling Green kept its division championship hopes alive a week ago, trouncing Miami (Ohio) 45-3 behind 252 passing yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Matt Johnson. The Bobcats saw their two-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt with a 30-3 drubbing at the hands of the Buffalo Bulls.

Following a pair of narrow losses to the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Toledo Rockets, Bowling Green returned to the strategy that made it a division favorite - stifling defensive pressure. The Falcons limited Miami (Ohio) to just 228 total yards and 16 first downs while forcing three turnovers - one of which BooBoo Gates returned for a touchdown. Ohio has had little trouble putting up points this season but ran into a brick wall against the formidable Bulls.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN3
LINE: Bowling Green enters as a 10-point favorite, with the over/under set at 49.
WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the high-20s at game-time with partly cloudy skies and wind blowing diagonally out of the northwest at 4 mph.

ABOUT OHIO (6-3, 3-2 MAC): Ohio is led by senior quarterback Tyler Tettleton, who has had a remarkable season but couldn't get anything going against Buffalo. Tettleton completed just 14 of 31 passes for 126 yards while failing to throw for a touchdown for the first time since the Bobcats' season opener. It was the same kind of story for feature back Beau Blankenship, who managed just 68 yards on 20 carries with a longest rush of nine yards.

ABOUT BOWLING GREEN (6-3, 4-1 MAC): Johnson needed a strong effort against the winless RedHawks after being held without a scoring pass in each of his previous two games. The sophomore QB completed 20 of 26 passes while overcoming his first interception since a 48-7 triumph over Murray State back on Sept. 21. Second-year running back Travis Greene finished with 14 carries for 112 yards against Miami (Ohio), moving him past the 1,000 mark for the season.

TRENDS:

* Bobcats are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games vs. teams with winning home records.
* Falcons are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games following a SU win of more than 20 points.
* Under is 8-2-1 in Ohio's last 11 games.
* The road team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

Buffalo Bulls at Toledo Rockets (-3.5, 54)

The Buffalo Bulls put their unbeaten conference record on the line Tuesday night as they visit the Toledo Rockets in a matchup between Mid-American Conference foes. Buffalo improved its MAC East mark to 5-0 while extending its overall winning streak to seven games with a 30-3 drubbing of the Ohio Bobcats. The Rockets kept alive their slim hopes of a West title, trouncing Eastern Michigan 55-16 for its their fourth consecutive victory.

In addition to a pair of win streaks being at stake, Tuesday's showdown pits the stout Buffalo defense against a formidable Toledo offense. The Bulls have been sensational on the defensive side of the ball since being torched for 110 points in season-opening losses to Ohio State and Baylor, surrendering just 78 points in seven games since. They'll face a stiff test from the Rockets, who have erupted for a whopping 175 points over their last four outings.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU
LINE: Toledo is listed as a 3 1/2-point favorite, with the over/under set at 54.
WEATHER: The skies will be partly cloudy with temperatures in the high-20s and wind blowing diagonally out of the northwest at 7 mph.

ABOUT BUFFALO (7-2, 5-0 MAC): Bulls quarterback Joe Licata isn't a big yardage guy, but has been one of the more consistent signal callers in the division. The sophomore completed 13-of-22 passes for 169 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Ohio, and has thrown for at least one score in each of his starts this season. Branden Oliver has been the offensive star of the team, rushing for 928 yards and nine touchdowns over his past five games.

ABOUT TOLEDO (6-3, 4-1 MAC): As good as senior quarterback Terrance Owens has been this year, he wasn't accumulating many yards - until last week, that is. Owens broke out for 375 yards on 18-of-24 passing while racking up three touchdowns for the second consecutive week. Running back David Fluellen (1,067 yards, 10 touchdowns) missed last week's game against Eastern Michigan with a leg injury and is questionable for this week's game.

TRENDS:

* Bulls are 5-0 ATS in their last five conference games.
* Rockets are 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight games following an ATS win.
* Under is 12-3 in Toledo's last 15 games.
* Buffalo is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

Michigan State vs. Kentucky: What bettors need to know

Michigan State Spartans vs. Kentucky Wildcats (-3)

Julius Randle and the latest dream team at Kentucky got off to a strong start over the first weekend. Things get much tougher on Tuesday, when the top-ranked Wildcats host No. 2 Michigan State in the State Farm Champions Classic at Chicago. Randle posted a double-double in each of his first two games but will be going up against a tough, experienced front line in Adreian Payne and the Spartans.

Michigan State sophomore guard Gary Harris is one of the few non-freshmen in the country getting attention as a lottery pick in the 2014 NBA draft and did nothing to hurt that stock with 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in the Spartans’ season-opening win over McNeese State. Michigan State blew past that smaller team and will take on a Wildcats squad much bigger and just as fast. Even the starting backcourt for Kentucky - James Young and Aaron and Andrew Harrison - all stand 6-6 and run the floor.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (1-0): Harris and Payne expect to get more help this season from swingman Branden Dawson, who is fully healthy after battling back from knee surgery last season. The junior joined Payne (10 and 10) and Harris with a double-double against McNeese State, marking the first time the Spartans had three players record double-doubles in the same game since 1988. Head coach Tom Izzo came away from the opening win with positive thoughts on his team but an eye toward improving. “One thing this team does do for you, is it’s been a fun team to be around so far,” Izzo said. “Let’s face it, it’s going to get a lot, lot, lot, lot, lot tougher, and I don’t just mean Tuesday, but from here on out.”

ABOUT KENTUCKY (2-0): The biggest question for John Calipari and the Wildcats coaching staff was how fast they could get all of their talented freshmen on the same page and working the offense. A pair of easy wins over the weekend showed that Randle, at least, had made a smooth transition to the college game with 22.5 points and 14.5 rebounds against Northern Kentucky and UNC-Asheville, and he made a habit of getting to the free throw line with a total of 27 attempts. Calipari is looking forward to the test from Michigan State. “For us, it’s just a bar of where we are right now,” he said. “We’ve got a long way to go.”

TRENDS:

* Wildcats are 6-1 ATS in their last seven vs. Big Ten.
* Spartans are 5-2 ATS in their last seven vs. Southeastern.
* Under is 5-0 in Spartans last five overall.
* Under is 4-1 in Wildcats last five overall.

TIP-INS:

1. Kentucky leads the all-time series 12-10 but the schools have not met since Michigan State took a 94-88 double-overtime thriller in the 2005 Elite Eight.

2. Harris, Payne and Randle are three of the 15 players named to the preseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, given annually to the most outstanding player in the country.

3. The Spartans handed out 32 assists on 42 made field goals in their opener, led by Travis Trice’s eight.

Duke vs. Kansas: What bettors need to know

Duke Blue Devils vs. Kansas Jayhawks (+5)

Freshmen phenoms Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins square off Tuesday when No. 4 Duke meets sixth-ranked Kansas at the United Center in Chicago in the Champions Classic. Duke has won four of the last five meetings in the series, and Parker made an immediate impact with 22 points in the Blue Devils’ 111-77 rout of Davidson in Friday’s season opener. “First game in college -- are you kidding me?” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said of Parker. “That was a terrific performance.”

Wiggins was equally impressive with a team-high 16 points in Friday’s 80-63 victory over Louisiana-Monroe, helping the young Jayhawks win their 41st straight home opener. Kansas lost all five starters from last season, but the Jayhawks are favored to make another title run behind Wiggins and fellow freshmen Wayne Selden Jr. and Joel Embiid. The key player in Tuesday’s matchup could be Kansas 6-foot-8 sophomore forward Perry Ellis, who could have plenty of opportunities against the smaller Blue Devils.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT DUKE (1-0): Parker’s debut overshadowed the first game in a Blue Devils uniform for Mississippi State transfer Rodney Hood, who had 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting along with a game-high nine rebounds. The Blue Devils averaged 92 points in two exhibition wins and maintained its up-tempo pace against Davidson, when they shot 70.4 percent from the field and made 13 3-pointers. Duke had four players score 20 or more in the opener, including guards Rasheed Sulaimon and Quinn Cook, who ranked second in the ACC in assists last season.

ABOUT KANSAS (1-0): The Jayhawks started three freshmen in Wiggins, Selden and Frank Mason in the opener, but junior Naadir Tharpe will replace Mason at point guard after serving a one-game suspension for playing in an unauthorized summer league game. “We’re ridiculously young, and everything’s a new experience for us,” said Self, whose team boasts eight newcomers. Memphis transfer Tarik Black, the Jayhawks’ only senior starter, had eight points and seven rebounds in the opener.

TRENDS:

* Blue Devils are 4-0 ATS in their last four vs. Big 12.
* Jayhawks are 1-4 ATS in their last five non-conference games.
* Under is 4-1 in Jayhawks last five vs. Atlantic Coast.
* Under is 5-2 in Blue Devils last seven overall.

TIP-INS:

1. Duke has made at least one 3-pointer in 838 consecutive games, the fourth-longest streak in the nation.

2. Kansas is seeking its first win in the Champions Classic after losing to Kentucky in 2011 and Michigan State last year.

3. Duke holds a 7-2 edge in the all-time series against the Jayhawks.

Florida at Wisconsin: What bettors need to know

Florida Gators at Wisconsin Badgers (-6)

Florida coach Billy Donovan is not feeling nearly as positive about his team as the pollsters, who have the Gators ranked No. 10. Donovan’s team will get a chance to prove its coach wrong on Tuesday, when Florida visits No. 19 Wisconsin. The Gators struggled against Northern Florida over the weekend, drawing criticism from their coach for their play on both ends of the floor.

The Badgers didn’t exactly blow out their first opponent, either, but knocked down 11 3-pointers in an 86-75 triumph over St. John’s while putting five players in double figures. That sort of balance would be a welcome development for Florida, which got 28 points from Casey Prather but just two from senior center Patric Young in the 77-69 win. “Sometimes we’re just lost out there. We are light years away from even being a remotely good defensive team right now and light years away from even being a ranked team,” Donovan told reporters.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT FLORIDA (1-0): The Gators got 15 points from freshman point guard Kasey Hill and 19 from Michael Frazier but did not have anyone else record more than four points against Northern Florida. Most shockingly for a Donovan-coached team, Florida struggled to 2-of-10 from 3-point range, had trouble defending the 3-pointer and was outrebounded. “My expectations are based on what our team looks like, what they’re capable of and whether they’re playing at the level you expect them to,” Donovan said. “I thought there were times we had guys not playing up to their standards.”

ABOUT WISCONSIN (1-0): The Badgers are known for their lock-down defense and slow pace under coach Bo Ryan but looked like a more open squad on both ends in their opener. Josh Gasser, who missed last season with a torn ACL, went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and finished with 19 points, drawing praise from his coach. “He brings a lot to the arena,” Ryan said. “His nature and basketball IQ affects other people around him.”

TRENDS:

* Gators are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games.
* Badgers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games.
* Over is 6-1 in Badgers last seven home games.
* Over is 5-0 in Gators last five vs. Big Ten.

TIP-INS:

1. Florida will again be without G Scottie Wilbekin, who is suspended for the first five games, and G Dorian Finney-Smith, who was suspended two games.

2. Wisconsin G Ben Brust matched Gasser with three 3-pointers and led the team with 203 last season.

3. The Gators saved themselves by going 27-for-32 from the free throw line in the opener.

NBA betting: Three ATS slam dunks for bettors

With the NBA season now two weeks old, it has been an interesting start as we have seen some good teams play poorly and some bad teams play very well. But as the league moves into its third week let's take a look at who some of the best teams have been when it comes to covering the spread.

Phoenix Suns (6-0-1 ATS)

No one in the NBA has had a hotter start to the season than the Phoenix Suns. The Suns lead the Pacific Division with a 5-2 SU record and are the only team in the NBA without a loss ATS. The Suns have been successful this season by being stingy on defense and efficient on offense. At the defensive end of the court the Suns are ranked in the top 10 in ppg, field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage. On offense the Suns are scoring 100.3 ppg which puts them 13th in the league and are shooting at a clip of 46.5 percent from the floor, which ranks ninth. The Suns next four opponents have a combined record of 10-14 ATS.

Indiana Pacers (5-2 ATS)

If not for a meaningless last second dunk by the Raptors Terrance Ross when the Pacers beat the Toronto 91-84 last Saturday, the Pacers would have covered and be 6-1 ATS to start the season. Indy is off to its hottest start in franchise history by going 7-0 SU and are the NBA's only remaining undefeated team. The Pacers are led by Paul George, who does everything. He is scoring 25.1 points per game, shooting almost 47 percent from the field to go along with 7.9 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.7 steals per game. But the Pacers do most of their damage at the defensive end of the court, where they rank first in points allowed per game, first in field goal percentage, sixth in rebounds and ninth in 3-point percentage. The Pacers next four opponents have a combined 7-15 record ATS.

Minnesota Timberwolves (5-2)

The Timberwolves have had a strong start to the season going 5-2 straight up and have covered the spread in five of their last six games. The Wolves have been able to do this because of their work on the offensive glass. They are currently seventh in the league in offensive rebounding and that is creating a lot of second chance opportunities for the Wolves who are averaging a league high 88.4 field goal attempts per game. Kevin Love seems to have regained his old form after an injury riddled 2012-13 campaign. Love is second in the league in ppg with 26.9 and leads the league in rpg with 14.4. The Wolves next four opponents have a combined 12-14 record ATS.

NHL betting: Stamkos injury a big blow to Lightning odds

The Tampa Bay Lightning have confirmed that sniper Steven Stamkos has suffered a broken right leg (tibia) and is out indefinitely.

Stamkos suffered the injury after colliding awkwardly with his own goal post in Monday's 3-0 loss to the Boston Bruins.

The superstar's absence will have a noticeable impact on Tampa Bay's odds and futures and it could impact Canada's hopes for a Gold Medal at Sochi.

"If it's ruled he is out for long period of time, odds on Tampa Bay to win the Cup will go from 20/1 to 30/1 at least and from 8/1 to 12/1 to win East," states Mike Perry, an oddsmaker with Sportsbook.ag (http://www.sportsbook.ag/).

"He is Tampa Bay's best player, so their odds are going to take a hit for sure," Michael Stewart, an oddsmaker with CarbonSports.ag told Covers. "As for Team Canada the talent pool is pretty deep, so the effect of his injury won't be felt nearly as much as it does with the Lightning."

In terms of value to the moneyline, Stamkos is near the top of the list of NHL stars.

"On average, I would say hes worth about 20 cents on a 20 cent progressive moneyline," says Aron Black of bet365 (http://www.bet365.com/). "But that again depends who they play, so it could be more, could be less dependent on the team and if at home or on the road."

like you have a lot of young guys who will be seeing their first serious action for you,

Cincinnati* over North Carolina State by 10
It's the most athletic team I've had in terms of recovery speed, shot blocking, and ability to switch,” says UC head coach Mick Cronin, who’ll be looking to play without a
center and have three forwards on his front line. Not good news for NC State, who
lost five of last season’s top six scorers to graduation or the NBA, and whose 7’1” center Vandenberg will be out a while with an injury.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities
by Jason Logan

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Lookahead spot

Two weeks ago, Sunday’s showdown with the Green Bay Packers looked like another loss on the G-Men’s resume. Not only has New York turned it around with two straight wins, but the Giants catch a break with Aaron Rodgers still mending a broken collarbone. However, don’t go writing off the Cheese Heads just yet.

New York has a massive divisional matchup with the Dallas Cowboys in Week 12, looking to get back in the NFC East hunt. Looking past the Packers to the date with Dallas could be dooming for the Giants. Eli Manning and the offense is still a mess, turning the ball over three times in a close win over Oakland. Books are discounting Green Bay with third-stringer Scott Tolzien under center, setting New York as big as 6-point favorites.

Letdown spot

Vanderbilt is rolling high in Week 12 following a win over the Florida Gators Saturday. The Commodores forced four turnovers and snapped a 22-game losing slide to Florida, winning 34-17 as 12-point road underdogs in Gainesville. All that, despite being out-gained 344-183, including just 57 yards passing Saturday.

Vanderbilt hosts Kentucky this weekend and oddsmakers have installed the Commodores as 12.5-point favorites, taking on the 2-7 Wildcats. Kentucky was rolled by Missouri last weekend but has shown an improved offense, out-passing the Tigers 235- 203 Saturday. Vandy has been the betting favorite three times this season and managed to cover just once.

Schedule spot

The Detroit Pistons pack their sunglasses for a four-game road swing on the West Coast this week, starting in Portland Monday night. The Pistons are on an 18-game road losing streak to Western Conference opponents with their last win in a Western arena coming in Sacramento Kings on March. 14 2012. Detroit is just 6-11-1 ATS in those games.

Following Monday’s opener in the Rose Garden, the Pistons visit Golden State, Sacramento, and Los Angeles Lakers. Detroit has dropped back-to-back games against the NBA elite, losing to Oklahoma City and Indiana at home, failing to cover in both outings.

Bucks at Heat What bettors need to know

Milwaukee Bucks at Miami Heat (Off, Off)

The defending champion Miami Heat are having a tough time closing out victories, a trend they'll try to end when they host the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday. Miami has lost three of its first seven games - by a combined six points - and are coming off a 111-110 loss to Boston. The Heat won three of four meetings last season and have claimed four of the last five.

The Bucks have stumbled out of the gate too often, trailing by 16 and 25 at halftime of their last two road games and falling behind by 18 early in the third quarter of Saturday's 91-83 home loss to Dallas. "I'm tired of playing comeback basketball," Milwaukee coach Larry Drew told reporters. "I really am. It just takes too much out of you." The Heat have gotten typically strong production from LeBron James (24.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 8 assists) despite a nagging back problem but have struggled at the defensive end.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), Sun Sports (Miami)

ABOUT THE BUCKS (2-3): Milwaukee isn't burning it up at the offensive end, but the Bucks are hitting from long range, ranking second in the league at 43.6 percent from 3-point range. Newcomer O.J. Mayo (18.6 points) leads four players averaging double-digit scoring, but the Bucks are short-handed in the post with forward Ersan Ilyasova sidelined with a sore ankle and defensive whiz Larry Sanders out following surgery on his right thumb. Even without Sanders' shot-blocking prowess, the Bucks have been one of the league's better defensive teams, holding opponents to 96 points per game and 44.3 percent shooting.

ABOUT THE HEAT (4-3): Miami has topped 100 points all seven games, the longest streak to start a season in franchise history, and leads the league in shooting at a 51.6 percent clip. James, Dwyane Wade (20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists) and Chris Bosh (18.5 points, 6.7 rebounds) are all putting up big numbers. Things haven't been so rosy at the other end, though, as the Heat suffered a defensive lapse in the second half against Boston, allowing the Celtics to shoot 61.9 percent and giving up a game-winning 3-pointer by Jeff Green at the buzzer.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-0-2 in the last seven meetings.
* Favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
* Under is 9-2-1 in the last 12 meetings in Miami.
* Heat are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games following a S.U. loss.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Wade needs four blocks to tie Dennis Johnson (675) for the most in NBA history by a guard 6-foot-4 or shorter.

2. Bucks F Carlos Delfino announced on his personal website Sunday that his foot injury will require additional surgery and he is likely to miss the entire season.

3. James has scored in double figures in 502 consecutive games, including all 224 contests he has played for the Heat.

Toledo hosts streaking Buffalo Tuesday evening
by Freddy Wander

Kickoff: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. ET
Line: Toledo -4

Buffalo attempts to go 6-0 in the Mid-American Conference on Tuesday night with a visit to Toledo, which is trying to keep pace with Ball State and Northern Illinois in the West division of the conference.

The Bulls are coming off a big 30-3 win over Ohio last week and are winners of their past seven games, both SU and ATS, after starting the season 0-2. They have absolutely dominated the MAC this season, winning each of their five games by at least 20 points. Last week they were only 4.5-point favorites at home against the Bobcats, but their 252 rushing yards and solid defense shut them down. The Rockets have also had a very successful season in the MAC, going 4-1 SU and ATS up to this point. Their only defeat in conference came at the hands of 9-1 Ball State by a score of 31-24. Toledo defeated Eastern Michigan 55-16 in its most recent game thanks to an impressive 729 yards of offense. Since 1992, these two programs have met only four times, with Toledo having a 3-1 record SU, but going only 1-3 ATS. In last season’s matchup, Toledo won 25-20 on the road as 7-point favorites thanks to 241 rushing yards. Both teams committed two turnovers in the game and the overall offensive numbers were close (Toledo 412 total yards, Buffalo 372 total yards). The Over is 2-1 in the past three matchups, but the Under has gone 12-3 in the Rockets’ past 15 games. Although Buffalo has done very well this season, it is a dreadful 3-16 SU in its past 19 away games.

The Bulls have been great in conference this season and should give a lot of credit to QB Joe Licata (1,738 yards, 16 TD, 5 INT) for their success. Licata has nine touchdowns to only one interception in conference play, but has averaged only 193.8 passing YPG. In Buffalo’s victory over Ohio, Licata was 13-for-22 (59.1%) for 169 yards and two touchdowns (one interception). His ability to not turn the ball over has been a major factor in the team’s 7-game winning streak. While Licata deserves much of the credit this season, the Bulls would not be doing this well without the performance from HB Branden Oliver, who has 1,123 rushing yards (5.2 YPC) with 11 touchdowns this season. He has really been a workhorse over the past three games, averaging 36 attempts per game and gaining an average of 216.7 YPG on the ground. WR Alex Neutz has impressed at receiver this season with 707 yards on 43 catches (16.4 avg.) and has added nine touchdowns. He has caught a touchdown in 8-of-9 games this season. LB Khalil Mack (59 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 3 INT, 2 TD) could be an early pick in next year’s NFL draft, but for now he is helping the Bulls hold opponents to 20.7 PPG and 363.9 YPG.

Toledo has averaged 445.6 yards of offense per game this season, which includes 238.9 YPG rushing (15th in nation). HB David Fluellen (1,067 yards, 10 TD) has been the Rockets' top option on the ground, but missed his previous game with a leg injury. Early reports look promising that Fluellen will be able to play against Toledo on Tuesday. If he is not able to go, the combo of HBs Kareem Hunt (486 rush yards, 5 TD) and Damion Jones-Moore (200 rush yards, 4 TD) will be expected to carry the offense. Hunt has three straight games with 110+ yards and at least one touchdown. QB Terrance Owens (1,609 passing yards, 11 TD, 6 INT) has performed extremely well in the past two games with a combined 505 passing yards and six touchdowns with 0 INT. WRs Bernard Reedy (587 rec. yards, 4 TD) and Alonzo Russell (515 rec. yards, 5 TD) have accounted for 59.2% of the passing game this year. DE Jayrone Elliot has been spectacular this season, recording 56 tackles and seven sacks. Elliot and the rest of the Rockets’ defense has allowed 26.2 PPG and 394.4 YPG this year.

PRO BASKETBALL
*Miami over Milwaukee by 13
The Heat have started slow but should be back in gear having been idle for the past
two days, while the Bucks' revamped backcourt had been missing their two top point
guards, Brandon Knight and Luke Ridnour. Big man Larry Sanders has been struggling
in Milwaukee's new offense.
MIAMI 99-86.

*Dallas over Washington by 16
This is a key matchup for the Mavericks as it's their only home game during a sixgame
stretch. The Wizards ranked last in defense going into last weekend. The
Nuggets have the veteran shooters to take advantage with Dirk Nowitzki, Monta Ellis
and Vince Carter off the bench.
DALLAS 111-95.

*Golden State over Detroit by 6
This marks Detroit's first time playing in the second of back to back games. The
Pistons covered the past three times in this spot last season. The Warriors still aren't
playing any defense and their reserves are below average, but Klay Thompson has been red-hot with his long range shooting.
GOLDEN STATE 114-108.

*Los Angeles Lakers over New Orleans by 5
The teams just met five days ago. Pau Gasol has been holding up and playing well, a
good sign for the Lakers. New Orleans lost both meetings to the Lakers last season on
the road, yet went 2-0 ATS.
LA LAKERS 100-95.

Tuesday, November 12

UMass has four starters back from 21-12/9-7 team; they're picked #4 in Atlantic 13 this season. LSU has four starters back from 19-12/9-9 team that was 13th-worst foul shooting team in country (62.5%), but this is their season opener, while Minutemen scored 54 points in second half of 86-73 win over BC Sunday- they made 6-11 behind the arc.

West Virginia won its opener by 15 over Mt St Mary's; they've got lot of new players after LY's 13-19/6-12 debacle, very un-Huggins-like. You think about new rules against physical play, WV had only 16 fouls in its opener- they beat Virginia Tech 68-67 at home LY. Hokies lost opener by point to SC-Upstate, an awful loss- they were just 9-18 from line.

NC State lost four starters from 24-11/11-7 team that lost in first round of NCAAs to Temple; Wolfpack beat UConn by 4 LY, its only game vs an AAC team. Wolfpack shot 65% inside arc in 98-77 win in its opener vs Appalachian State. Cincinnati has three starters back from 22-12 team that went 4-8 in last 12 games- they won opener by 13 vs NC Central.

Charlotte was 28-35 from line, 2-17 behind arc in 80-75 win over East Tennessee in its opener; 49ers were 4th-worst 3-point shooting team in country LY- three starters are back from LY's 21-12/8-8 team. Niners are picked #4 in 16-team C-USA. Charleston lost opener at Louisville by 22, but it was only 29-27 at half. Cougars were -18 in turnovers (21-3).

VCU has to be very excited about playing Virginia for first time in this century ('99 last meeting); Rams have three starters back from LY's 27-9 team that went 12-4 in A-16. VCU crushed Illinois State by 38 Friday, with a eFG% of 62.3. Cavaliers waxed JMU 61-41 in their opener (was 32-14 at half)- UVa has three starters back from LY's 23-12/11-7 team.

Kentucky beat couple stiff teams by 32-30 to open season; they started four frosh and soph last game- LY's 21-12/12-6 NIT team didn't quite cut it by Big Blue standards. Michigan State has four starters back from 27-9 team- they start junior/two seniors, are more mature. Spartans won opener by 42 over McNeese- they only took five foul shots in easy win.

Tennessee has four starters back from 20-13/11-7 team that beat Xavier 51-47 LY after trailing by 10 with 15:08 left; this is Vols' opener, while Xavier clocked Gardner-Webb 83-59 (41-22 at half)- would've been lot worse if they weren't 22-40 from foul line. Musketeers lost two starters from 17-14/9-7 team, but brought in pair of explosive freshman guards.

Florida has two starters suspended; Gators beat North Florida 77-69 in opener, but were up 19 with 9:28 left. Florida beat Wisconsin 74-56 LY, turning ball over 20 times but shooting 67% inside arc. Badgers won by 11 over St John's in opener, making 11-23 on arc- they used two subs. Wisconsin PG Gasser played 35:00 in his return from LY's injury- they have only one scholarship seniors, but also three 4th-year juniors.

Kansas lost all five starters from LY's 31-6 team, but they've got the #1 frosh in America in Wiggins, who had 16 in Jayhawks' 80-63 win over ULM in opener. Kansas was 27-43 from line, shot 64% inside arc, 7-18 outside it. Duke beat Kansas by 7 on neutral court in last meeting two years ago; Blue Devils beat Davidson by 34 in opener (13-21 on arc).

UNLV got boost from transfer Olekaide (14 pts) in 67-48 win opening win over Portland State, but other than Birch (7-8), Rebels were 6-20 on foul line. UNLV won in double OT at UCSB in last meeting two years ago, after Gauchos won on Strip year before. UCSB returns four starters from LY- new PG Harmon has seven assists in 79-50 opening win.

USC lost Enfield's debut by 13 at Utah State, forcing only 7 turnovers, making 4-24 from arc; Trojans have three starters back from LY, but are learning totally new style. Reggie Theus is Northridge's new coach- they have four starters back from 13-17/5-13 team- he played seven guys in Matadors' opening win, less than CSUN used while pressing in the past. Theus has transfers coming in from the east, but not until next year.

Minnesota lost three starters from LY's 21-13/8-10 team and also got a new coach; Richard Pitino replaces Tubby Smith. Gophers beat Lehigh 81-62 in opener (37-18 at half)- King had 20 points off bench. Montana graduated star G Cherry but is still picked #2 in Big Sky; this is opener for Griz team that won 93 games the last four years.

Denver runs Princeton offense, is hard to prep for; Cal beat them 72-61 LY, outscoring Pioneers 20-8 on foul line while holding Denver to 37% inside arc. Bears beat Coppin State by 19 in opener; Coppin then went and won at Oregon State Sunday. Denver has two starters back from a 22-10 team; this is its opener, as they prep to play in third league in last three seasons (Sun Belt/WAC/Summit).

Buffalo Bulls at Toledo Rockets
This is one of those games, where it looks like we may have
the wrong favorite... we'll see.
Last week Buffalo easily beat The Ohio Bobcats 30-3.
Toledo is arguably a better team, but not that much better.
If you want to go by the numbers, with similar strength of schedules:
Offensive Rank Defensive Rank
Ohio 67th 45th
Toledo 44th 65th
For illustrative purposes, it doesn't get much closer.
At 7-2, Buffalo's only losses have been to Ohio State and Baylor.
At 6-3 Toledo has lost to Florida, Missouri, but also Ball State.
Some of the commentary listed in the next paragraph is a reprint from last week.
The Bull's win against Ohio, solidifies the argument.
Buffalo's defense has been improving, but is a little banged up
this evening, especially at linebacker. That may not matter because
Khalil Mack (LB) is healthy and looks like a first round pick.
He played well against Ohio State early in the season with 9 tackles,
2.5 sacks and a 45 yard Pick 6.
He ranks third in NCAA history with 67 tackles for loss.
Let's look at Buffalo's last 6 games with the understanding that some
of their opponents rank in the bottom 20% of many offensive categories.
But.... The Bobcats have faced similar opposition.
1) They were winning against Kent State 34-7, before taking their foot off the gas.
2) They benevolently let U Mass score 3 points.
3) They weren't as charitable with Western Michigan, holding them scoreless.
4) They were up 42-7 against Eastern Michigan, and then put 2nd stringers in.
5) They held Connecticut scoreless in the 2nd half.
6) They held The Ohio Bobcats to 3 points for the entire game.
In addition, Buffalo has a +15 turnover margin, which includes
their games against Baylor and Ohio State.
Toledo's best offensive option had been running back David Fluellen
who's been injured and will be a game time decision.
His backups Freshman Kareem Hunt and redshirt freshman
Damion Jones-Moore have played well. Hunt has 409 yards rushing
and five touchdowns in his last three games. Moore ran for 67 yards
and a score against EMichigan, but The Eagles have a poor defense.
Toledo also has numerous injuries on defense, that affects their depth,
but not key personnel.
Their offensive line leads the nation in sacks, allowing just 4.
That may change this evening.
Take The Buffalo Bulls +4

NBA Basketball

508 Los Angeles Lakers +3: The once great Lakers were humiliated here at Staples Center this past Sunday and you could even hear some boo’s from the home crowd as the boys from la la land went down 113-90. They will be in a very nasty mood in this game against the Pelicans and the Lakers have gone 9-1 SU in this series and are 6-1 ATS off a home loss.

College Basketball

519 Georgia State +5: With a game and a win under their belt a real good team led by the coaches son will play Vandy in their opener, look for a very close game with the Panthers from Atlanta getting the cover.

College Football

301 Ohio / 302 Bowling Green UNDER 49: In what will be a cold and windy evening in Bowling Green the Falcons who own the 7th best defense in the nation will be looking to shut down the Bobcats offense who could only score three last week.

2013-14 NCAA FB (0-0-0) Overall Record: 58-30-2

NHL Hockey

14 Florida Panthers +160: This is the first of two system plays as the Ducks skate into Florida with a five game win streak, look for the Panthers to break their nine game losing streak as a big dog.

21 San Jose Sharks -180: San Jose is the second of our system plays as they skate into Calgary with a five game losing streak.

The second Mid American Conference battle of the night. The visiting Bulls are 6-0 both SU and ATS in their last six. They look to avenge last year’s 25-20 home loss to the Rockets. BUFFALO.

Richard Saber: Last week 0-2 ATS; 2013 record: 45-41.

2 for Tuesday by Mark Mayer

1) Detroit +10 at Golden State (NBA)

Tough stretch for Pistons playing the second of four straight roadies out West. Definitely an early gauntlet facing Indiana, OKC, Portland and now the explosive Warriors. GOLDEN ST.

2) Milwaukee +12½ at Miami (NBA)

The Bucks have not lost any game this season by more than 8 points. As for the champion Heat, they are a disappointing 2-5 ATS. Look for the Bucks to hang around. MILWAUKEE.

Mark Mayer: Last week 1-1 ATS; 2013 record: 54-34.

OC Dooley:1 UNIT” ESPN-TV COLLEGE BASKETBALL SIDE (Kentucky +3’ versus Michigan State in a neutral-court 7:30 eastern tipoff from Chicago): This is an unprecedented early season matchup between the Top-Two ranked teams in the country with the #1 option actually coming in as an underdog. That is due to the fact that Kentucky continues to be the king of “one and done” programs which head coach John Calipari has made famous. In an effort to once again take pressure off what ESPN’s Dick Vitale calls “diaper dandies” Calipari has claimed his troops have a long way to go and basically are not ready for this caliber an opponent this early. But the six freshmen on the Kentucky roster will soon be in the NBA and are basically pick of the litter. Kentucky has beaten a pair of low-rated opponents by an average of 31 points per pop, while Michigan State easily handled their one doormat. It is interesting to note that following a game where Tom Izzo’s troops owned the boards with 51+ rebounds, Michigan State (3-14 ATS) actually has been a financial drain. Meanwhile with a posted total between 145-and-149’ points which is the case tonight Kentucky has COVERED SEVEN IN A ROW
