Monday Night Football betting: Patriots at Panthers

New England Patriots at Carolina Panthers (-3, 46)

Cam Newton made a splashy entrance on the NFL scene, posting spectacular numbers that did not translate into wins for the Carolina Panthers and the former No. 1 overall pick. Newton may not be putting up head-spinning stats, but the victories keep piling up for the Panthers, who will go for their sixth consecutive win when they host the New England Patriots on Monday night. The Patriots had a bye week to prepare for Carolina following a 55-31 demolition of Pittsburgh on Nov. 3.

Although the Panthers scored at least 30 points in four straight games prior to last week's 10-9 win at San Francisco, they have been dominant on the other side of the ball, ranking second in the league in points allowed at 12.8 per game. "They're one of the best defenses in the league," New England quarterback Tom Brady said. "We have to play really well. I think our execution has to be at its best." The Patriots hold a two-game lead in the AFC East while Carolina is a game behind New Orleans in the NFC South.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE: The Panthers opened at -1 and have been bet to -3. The total opened at 44.5 and has been bet up to 46.

WEATHER: It will be clear with temperatures in the low-50s with a 10 percent chance of rain.

ABOUT THE PATRIOTS (7-2): New England is coming off its best offensive performance of the season in the mauling of the Steelers, getting 432 yards and
four touchdown passes from Brady and 100-yard games from tight end Rob Gronkowski and wideouts Danny Amendola and rookie Aaron Dobson. Stevan Ridley complemented the aerial attack with 115 yards rushing and two TDs as the Patriots amassed 610 yards of total offense. The Patriots' defense has been rocked by season-ending injuries to Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork and middle linebacker Jerod Mayo, but could get back star cornerback Aqib Talib, who has been sidelined the past three games by a hip injury.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (6-3): Carolina's defense, led by tackling machine Luke Kuechly at linebacker, has surrendered 11.4 points during the winning streak
and limited San Francisco to three field goals and 151 total yards last week. Defensive ends Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy have combined for 13.5 sacks
- "We take what we want," Hardy said of a unit that ranks second overall (283.3 yards) and tied for fourth against the pass (201.3). Newton has not thrown for more than 249 yards during the five-game run, but he has seven scoring passes and three TD runs in that span while directing a ball-control offense that averages 127.8 yards on the ground.

TRENDS:

* Patriots are 5-0 in their last five Monday Night games.
* Panthers are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Patriots last five Monday Night games.
* Over is 13-3-2 in Panthers last 18 versus a team with a winning record.

EXTRA POINTS:

1. Brady is 13-4 on Monday night for the Patriots, who outlasted Carolina 32-29 in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

2. Second-year LB Kuechly is averaging a shade under 10 tackles in 25 career games.

3. New England has forced a turnover in 36 straight games, the longest active streak in the league.

Tale of the Tape: New England Patriots at Carolina Panthers

Tom Brady and the rejuvenated New England Patriots offense face their toughest test of the season Monday night when they travel to Carolina for a date with the Panthers.

Brady looked like his old self in the Patriots' last game, throwing for 432 yards and four touchdowns as New England blasted the Pittsburgh Steelers 55-31 before enjoying a much-needed bye week. The Panthers are red-hot in their own right, riding a five-game winning streak while limiting opponents to just 57 total points over that stretch.

Here's the breakdown in our betting tale of the tape:

Offense

Brady and the Patriots scuffled through the first half of the season - dealing with injuries to Rob Gronkowski, Danny Amendola and Shane Vereen - but still managed to reel off eight victories in their first 10 games. New England comes into Week 11 sitting 20th overall in passing yardage (2,088), but has thrown just six interceptions against 13 touchdowns. The Patriots have excelled in the run game so far, ranked eighth in total yardage (1,162) while racking up 10 scores.

Third-year quarterback Cam Newton has had an uneven season to date; the Panthers rank fourth from the bottom in total passing yardage (1,762), but Newton has completed nearly 63 percent of his passes and ranks 11th in QB rating (88.3). He has thrown 13 touchdown passes but has been intercepted eight times. The run game has looked ordinary, ranked 10th overall in yardage (1,150) with 10 touchdowns but averaging just 3.9 yards per carry.

Edge: New England

Defense

The Patriots have had to deal with a litany of injuries on the defense corps - but it's difficult to tell by looking at the numbers. New England has allowed the 11th-fewest passing yards so far (2,095) while limiting opponents to 13 touchdowns and hauling in 12 interceptions. The run defense has been less effective - teams are averaging better than 128 yards per game versus the Patriots but New England has only surrendered four touchdowns on the ground.

No team in football does a better job of limiting opposition yardage than the Panthers. Carolina has clamped down on opponents' pass attacks, allowing the fourth-fewest yards through the air (1,812) while giving up just seven touchdowns and intercepting 13 passes - tied for the most in the NFL entering Week 11. The run defense has been even more impressive, allowing the second-fewest rushing yards (738) on 3.8 yards per carry while permitting only two scores.

Edge: Carolina

Special Teams

The Patriots have had an up-and-down return game so far, ranked 24th in average kickoff return (21.9 yards) and ninth in average punt return (11.5). They've been stingy when it comes to special teams defense, allowing the fifth-lowest kick-return average (20.5) while limiting opponents to 9.3 yards per punt return. Veteran kicker Steven Gostkowski has been one of the top kickers in the league yet again, converting 22-of-23 field-goal opportunities.

Carolina ranks 20th in the league in kick-return average (22.4) and 16th in punt-return average (8.7). That results in a modest special teams net loss, as the Panthers are allowing opponents to average 23.4 yards per kick return and 9.4 yards per punt return. Panthers placekicker Graham Gano has been solid to date, making 13-of-14 field-goal attempts; he hit from 53 yards out but missed a 48-yarder in last week's victory over San Francisco.

Edge: Patriots

Notable Quotable

"(The Panthers have) a problem on their hands. Shane is a playmaker out of the backfield. Whether it's on the ground or through the air, he does it well. I'm excited to have him back out there, and I know he's ready to play. He was hungry coming into this year and started out hot." - Patriots RB Stevan Ridley on teammate Vereen, who will suit up for the first time since suffering a wrist injury in Week 1

"We're relevant right now. But we can't just stop and say, 'Hey, let's pop bottles. Let's celebrate, order some hot wings and pizza. We're just halfway through the season. We just have to continue doing the things that's putting this feeling in our hearts because it's becoming a special thing to watch." - Newton

Patriots 1-3-1 ATS in last five games off a bye

In the past five years the New England Patriots are 4-1 straight up when Bill Belichick has an extra week to prepare for an opponent. But in that time the Patriots are only 1-3-1 against the spread. The last time they covered was back in 2008 when they defeated the 49ers in San Francisco 30-12.

This week the Patriots head to Carolina to take on the Panthers on Monday night as +3 road underdogs. It is the first time time in the Belichick era that the Patriots are underdogs coming off a bye.

The Patriots have also only hit the Over twice in the past five seasons when coming off a bye. The total is currently at 46.

Bank shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best - and worst - basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Nov. 11-17

Hottest ATS - Chicago Bulls (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)

After a sluggish start to the season, Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls have seemed to shake off the rust. The Bulls started the season 1-3 straight up and 0-4 against the spread, but since have gone on a four-game winning streak, covering the spread in each game. During the winning streak, the Bulls have done what they do best - play defense. They are holding teams to 90 ppg and just 40.3 percent shooting from the floor, ranking them third and second respectively. This week will be a tough test for the red-hot Bulls. They face the scrappy Charlotte Bobcats at home before kicking off a west coast road trip Thursday in Denver.

Coldest ATS - Orlando Magic (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS)

After a hot start to the season which saw the Orlando Magic go 3-2 SU and an impressive 5-0 ATS, the Magic have lost their touch. They have gone 1-4 in their last five games and haven't covered in that span. Last week the Magic gave up 106.3 ppg, which included 120 points in a loss to the offensively deficient Boston Celtics. This week, the Magic play a home-and-home series with the Miami Heat before ending the week against the Phoenix Suns, who are still lighting it up against the spread with a 7-1-1 record this season.

Best over play - Los Angeles Clippers (3-0 SU, 3-0 O/U)

The team formerly know as 'Lob City' returned to their high-flying ways this week, notching some big wins at home against good competition. The Clippers defeated Western Conference contenders Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder as well as knocking off the Brooklyn Nets. The Clippers averaged 110 ppg over that span. The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Clippers though. They play five games next week, including rematches on the road against the Wolves and Thunder. They have home games against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Sacramento Kings and the Chicago Bulls. The Clippers have hit the Over in all five home games this season.

Best under play - San Antonio Spurs (3-0 SU, 0-3 O/U)

It has quietly been business as usual for the San Antonio Spurs, who are tied with the Indiana Pacers for the best record in the NBA at 9-1. They have also been a solid under play all season, hitting the Under seven times in 10 games. They have done this by playing excellent defense and being efficient on offense. The Spurs rank second and fourth, in points per game and field goal percentage respectively. They are also shooting 47.6 percent from the floor, good for fifth in the NBA. This week the Spurs take on the Boston Celtics at home, the Memphis Grizzlies on the road and finish of the week at home against the Cleveland Cavaliers. They are all ranked 24th or worse in scoring this season.

Surveying the schedule:

The Philadelphia 76ers have been a solid over play this season going 8-3. Their fast pace style of play has made them a great target for Over bettors. They rank eighth in the league in scoring at 104.5 ppg and last in the NBA in points against, giving up 111.1. The 76ers start this week at Dallas then return home to take on Toronto. Toronto and Dallas are a combined 12-8 O/U.

All stats prior to Sunday's NBA action.

Bobcats at Bulls: What bettors need to know

Charlotte Bobcats at Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls’ slow start is far in the rearview mirror now that the defense is matching up with the offensive potential. The Bulls will look to push their winning streak to five straight when they host the Charlotte Bobcats on Monday. Chicago is allowing an average of 82 points in the last four contests and are coming off a 110-94 victory over previously-unbeaten Indiana on Saturday.

Derrick Rose returned from a one-game absence due to a hamstring injury and put together one of his best games of the season against the Pacers, knocking down six 3-pointers and handing out four assists without a turnover. The Bobcats just got finished with one Eastern Conference contender in a 97-81 home loss to the Miami Heat on Saturday and will get Indiana later this month. Charlotte is not quite as stout defensively as the Bulls but is in the top five in the NBA in scoring defense.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, SportsSouth (Charlotte), CSN Chicago

ABOUT THE BOBCATS (5-5): Charlotte has held all but two of its opponents under the century mark and limited the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers to an average of 81.5 points in its last two road games - both wins. Kemba Walker is the most consistent scorer for the Bobcats but is having a rough go of it lately, shooting 27.7 percent from the floor over the last five games. The former Connecticut star shot under 50 percent in each of his last eight contests.

ABOUT THE BULLS (5-3): Chicago looks like a title contender of late while scoring at least 96 points in each of its last four wins to go along with the solid defense. “The ball movement has been there all season,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “The ball is going in now, and when the ball goes in, it looks better.” The ball went in against Indiana, including 11-of-19 from 3-point range as the Bulls went over 100 points for the first time this season.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings.
* Road team is 7-0 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Bobcats are 4-0 ATS in their last four vs. NBA Central.
* Bulls are 1-4 ATS in their last five vs. NBA Southeast.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Bulls have taken seven of the last eight in the series and posted a 105-75 triumph in the last meeting, Feb. 22, 2013.

2. Charlotte C Al Jefferson (ankle) missed the last two games and is questionable for Monday.

3. Chicago F Luol Deng is averaging 21 points on 16-of-29 shooting over the last two contests.

College football odds: Week 13 opening line report

Practically every week in college football, there’s a major showdown in the Southeastern Conference. That’s certainly the case for Week 13, which is highlighted by reigning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M traveling to Baton Rouge to battle LSU.

The Aggies (8-2 SU, 5-5 ATS), coming off a bye, haven’t had trouble in the scoring department all season, scoring 41 points or more in all 10 games. And they’ve racked up huge totals the past few weeks, breaking 50 in each of their last three games while going 3-0 SU (2-1 ATS), including a 51-41 home victory Nov. 9 against Mississippi State – though they fell short of covering in that contest as 19.5-point favorites.

LSU (7-3, 4-5-1 ATS), also coming off a bye, got off to a strong 4-0 SU start this year, but the Tigers are just 3-3 SU (2-3-1 ATS) in their last six games and have failed to cover in their last three outings. That includes a 38-17 loss catching 14 points at top-ranked Alabama on Nov. 9.

Peter Korner, founder of Nevada-based odds service The Sports Club, found the total on this game intriguing, as he expects a shootout in the bayou.

“This is another great game to watch,” Korner said. “The total we sent out is 78, so you know this is going to be an up-and-down game. What Texas A&M game isn't?”

As for the spread, Korner had to give the nod to the host.

“Our range of numbers went from LSU pick to -4.5, and we settled on LSU -3. Of course, Texas A&M has a great chance of winning this game straight up, but playing at LSU this late in the year is a tough challenge for any team – even one led by Johnny Football. We think this line will hold close to our opener by kickoff. A&M has a good, steady flow of cash that has followed them all year.”

Arizona State Sun Devils (-1.5) at UCLA Bruins

ASU (8-2 SU, 5-5 ATS) heads to the West Coast toting a five-game SU win streak (3-2 SU), and the Sun Devils have gotten it done in blowout fashion and grind-it-out fashion. In wins over Colorado, Washington and at Washington State, ASU rang up 54, 53 and 55 points respectively; the past two weeks, the Sun Devils fended off host Utah 20-19 laying seven points and bested visiting Oregon State 30-17, barely failing to cash as a 13.5-point chalk.

It appears UCLA (8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS) has gotten over brutal back-to-back road trips. Since losing 24-10 at Stanford and 42-14 at Oregon, the Bruins have won three in a row, covering their last two while averaging 39 ppg in that stretch, including a 41-31 home win over Washington.

“This is a very good game, and the line is representative of how unpredictable this game is,” Korner said. "Our range of numbers went from UCLA -3 to ASU -2. After discussing the teams overall strengths and recent play, we made ASU the road favorite. We're going to open this game at ASU -1.5 and see where
that takes us. We see the offshores had play on ASU, and that ASU was up to -3. But we're not going that high here in Nevada with the large Los Angeles following we have in our sportsbooks on the weekend.”

Baylor Bears (-11) at Oklahoma State Cowboys

Baylor (9-0 SU) aims to keep its name in the national championship conversation. If scoring and spread-covering ability were part of the BCS formula, the Bears would definitely be No. 1. They average a whopping 61.2 ppg, rolling to a 63-34 win over Texas Tech on Saturday laying 27.5 points at AT&T Stadium, and their 8-1 ATS record (4-0 last four) ranks third in the nation.

Oklahoma State (9-1 SU) is also no slouch at the betting window, with a 7-3 ATS mark (14th), and like Baylor, offense is a big part of the formula. The Cowboys have won six in a row SU and five in a row ATS, scoring 38 points or more four times in that stretch, including two games in the 50s.

“Nevada books continue to get trampled by Baylor each and every week,” Korner said. “We don't want to be light on this team. Our range of numbers went from Baylor -10 to -14. We saw the number diminish from -10.5 to -9.5 early Sunday morning, but we're not falling for that. We stuck a -11 as our opener and fully expected that weak -9.5 to jump back up in no time.”

Northern Illinois Huskies (-2.5) at Toledo Rockets

Northern Illinois (10-0 SU, 7-3 ATS) is looking to become a BCS bowl buster for the second straight year. The Huskies had their hands full at home last week against Ball State, but pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 48-27 win and cover as an 8.5-point favorite. NIU has cashed four in a row and six of its last seven.

Toledo (7-3 SU) has been a good bet this season, with a 7-2-1 ATS mark (10th nationally), and the Rockets’ scoring production has been strong over the past few weeks. Toledo has won five in a row SU (4-1 ATS), scoring 45 points or more in four of those games, including a 51-41 home win over Buffalo as a 5.5-point chalk last week.

“This game will be an excellent one, with two very good teams going at it,” Korner said. “Apparently, it was a no-brainer, as everyone had Northern Illinois -2.5 -- all five of our oddsmakers and the offshores. Nothing to see here, keep it moving.”

NCAAF betting: FSU's Winston Heisman fave at -400

Despite another impressive performance from Florida State QB Jameis Winston this weekend, the news of Winston being named in an ongoing sexual assault case has caused his Heisman odds to take a hit.

Winston is still the fave at -400 to take home the award for college football's most outstanding player, but the margin between him and the rest of the field is much closer.

Last week before the news broke about Winston, he was favored at -800. Winston led FSU to a 59-3 win over Syracuse and now has 2938 passing yards and 31 total touchdowns while completing 70.9 percent of his passes this season. If Winston were to be charged with a felony, he would automatically be suspended by the FSU athletic department.

Defending Heisman winner Johnny Manziel has moved into second place after jumping from +500 to +250 even with Texas A&M not in action this week. The Aggies QB has 3313 yards passing and 31 passing touchdowns to go along with 600 yards rushing and eight rushing touchdowns.

Alabama QB AJ McCarron is close behind at +450. That is a slight increase from last week where he was at +500. Alabama defeated Mississippi State 20-7 on Saturday and McCarron now has 2228 passing yards with 21 touchdowns and is completing 67.8 percent of his passes.

Week 11

Patriots (7-2) @ Panthers (6-3)—Carolina went to Candlestick last week and outslugged 49ers 10-9, holding SF to 44 yards passing; they’ve won/covered last five games, now get national TV exposure and shot at team used to such exposure. Panthers allowed only one first half TD all season, and outscored last three opponents 40-7 in second half- they’ve won last three home games by combined score of 92-15, after losing home opener 12-7 to Seattle. Curious to see young Patriot receivers work against this impressive defense; NE lost its last two road games, gaining less than 300 yards in both games. Pats ran ball for 349 yards in last two games; they’ve won nine of last ten post-bye games. Carolina is 20-43 on third down in last three games, leading to field position advantages of 16-15-5 yards. NE won three of five series games, 32-29 win in Super Bowl 28 being most famous one- teams split two meetings here. Four of last five Carolina games, three of last four Patriot games went over the total.

NFL betting: This week's Top key injuries

Shane Vereen, RB, New England Patriots (N/A, wrist)

Vereen is a man without an official injury status, since the Patriots have yet to activate him from the physically-unable-to-perform list. That's expected to be a mere formality, yet it isn't immediately clear how much Vereen will play in his first taste of game action since undergoing wrist surgery in early September. After racking up 159 yards in his only game of the season, the 24-year-old will provide some much-needed big-play ability to New England's beleaguered attack.

The Patriots are listed as one-point dogs for the Monday nighter in Carolina. The total is set at 46.

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL SELECTION
3-Unit Play. Take 'Over' 46.0 - New England at Carolina (8:40 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18)
1-Unit Play. Take #429 New England (+2.5) over Carolina (8:40 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18)
I know that Carolina's defense is one of the best in football. But do you really think that they are
going to stop Tom Brady - fresh off a bye? I don't. At the same token, I think that Carolina's
offense is due for a bit of a breakout after getting held up in San Francisco last week. And the
Patriots defense has problems, serious, serious problems. So if the Panthers can't get 20 points in
this one I don't know what to tell them. This game will definitely be played in the 20's and this
one is going 'over'. The more I think about this play the more I like it.

2 Unit Play. #128/#430 Take Carolina Panthers -2.5 over New England Patriots (Monday 8:40
pm ESPN) The Panthers are in beast mode at the moment, having won having won 5 straight
games, and 4 of those games have been blowouts. The fan base in Carolina will be sky high for
this game since they do not get many primetime games with a national audience. Carolina is
allowing just 9 points per game in Charlotte and just 249 total yards in their last 7 games. Cam
Newton will have an easier time this week moving the football on offense against a suspect
Patriots defense. New England is just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games. Carolina is 5-1 ATS in
their last 6 home games. Take the home chalk on Monday night.

NEW ENGLAND (429) AT CAROLINA (430)
Latest Line: Carolina -3.0; Total: 47.0

The Patriots come out of a bye week to face the Panthers, the hottest team in the NFL, on Monday night. New England finally got its struggling offense into gear with 610 total yards in a 55-21 drubbing of the Steelers on Nov. 3. Carolina has won five in row (SU and ATS) thanks to its stingy defense, allowing 15 points or less in each of the five victories, including a 10-9 upset win at San Francisco last week. New England could get both RB Shane Vereen (wrist) and top CB Aqib Talib (hip) back on the field for this matchup. The Patriots hold a 3-2 SU advantage, but the Panthers are 4-1 ATS in this all-time series.

New England Patriots at Carolina Panthers (-3)/47- 8:40 ET ESPN
5* New England Patriots (+3)
Last Sunday, the Carolina defense erased the final question marks from the minds of their
doubters. The Panthers entered the game at San Francisco on a 4-0 ATS run. Their opponents,
however, had all been losing teams. The questions lingered: were the Panthers fat after stuffing
themselves on cupcakes? They were playing on the strong home field of a 49ers team who was
coming off their bye week and was on a 5-0 ATS run. But as the game wore on, it was clear the
Panthers could go toe to toe with the powerful 49ers. The end result was a 10-9 Carolina victory
in which they held San Fran to just 151 yards. Now, the Panthers enter on a 5-0 SU ATS run in
which they have covered by 72 points, with a +8 net TO margin in those games. The surprising
defense has led the way. For the season, they are allowing just 13 PPG and 283 YPG. They are
controlling the point of attack, outrushing opponents by an average of 127-82. On this field,
Carolina has been even more dominant allowing 4 opponents the total of only 37 points. Now,
they are faced with a major challenge against the New England Patriots. When we last left New
England, WRs Amendola and Gronkowski were returning to full health. QB Brady was leading an
offense that put up 55 points and over 600 yards against the once vaunted Pittsburgh Steelers.
Now, the Brady/Belichick combo has had 2 weeks to prepare for a 2 week primetime gauntlet
which finds the 49ers facing Carolina tonight and hosting the Broncos on SNF next week. Be sure
the Panthers have caught the attention of New England and the appropriate game plan is in
place. We never stand in the way of New England in this role, and neither should you. In the
L10Y, New England is 18-4-2 ATS (8-1 ATS L4Y) as road dog

The Patriots come off a bye week after humiliating the Pittsburgh Steelers 55-31 on November 3rd, the surging Panthers have won and covered five straight games including last weeks huge 10-9 win in San Francisco. GamingToday's Consensus Picks November 18, 2013 6:00 AM by GT Staff

NFL Monday Night Football

429 New England Patriots / 430 Carolina Panthers OVER 47: We will follow the money on this total as it opened a cool 45 and has been bet up to 47 and we can understand why. The Pats come off a bye week and they scored 55 against the Steelers in their last game and have averaged a cool 34 points a game in their last four games. While the Panthers only scored 10 last week in San Francisco they had scored 30 or more in each of their previous four games.

NBA Basketball

510 Utah Jazz +9: Utah got hammered at Golden State this past Saturday 102-88 and now look to stay close at home in this rematch and we think they will be fired up for this one.

509 Golden State Warriors / 510 Utah Jazz OVER 195½: These two scored 190 on Saturday when the Jazz only put up 88 we look for them to be at least in the 90’s in this home revenge game.

NHL Hockey

4 Pittsburgh Penguins -155: The Pens get back on their home ice after a loss in New Jersey on Saturday, and they will get back to their winning ways.

6 Winnipeg Jets -150: The Jets lost in Minnesota last night but took the short trip home to face off with the hapless Flames who have dropped six in a row.

Where the action is: Sharps backing hot Panthers

Monday Night Football has the AFC East leading New England Patriots traveling to Carolina to take on the surging Panthers.

We talk to oddsmaker Michael Stewart of Carbonsports.ag about the action coming in on Monday Night Football and where the odds could move come kickoff.

New England Patriots at Carolina Panthers - Open: -1.5, Move: -2.5

Panthers QB Cam Newton has stepped up his play during Carolina's five-game winning streak. Newton has completed 69.8 percent of his passes to go along with 10 total touchdowns, while only turning the ball over four times in five games.

The Panthers have covered the spread in the last five games, while the Patriots are 1-3 against the spread on the road.

According to Stewart, sharp action came in early on the home dog, but the action has been back and forth throughout the week.

"We booked very sharp action on the favorite, pushing us to Panthers -2.5," Stewart says. "After going to -2.5, we booked tons of money on the Patriots +2.5 and went back to Panthers -1.5."

Since moving back to Panthers -1.5, there was once again sharp action on the favorite and the number has settled at -2.5.

"Since going to -2.5 yesterday, we've booked great two-way action at that number and I don't see us getting off that number anytime soon," Stewart says. "For us, it's an unusual game in that the sharps are backing the faves and the public is backing the dog."

As for the total, most books opened between 44 and 46.5, with early action on the Over before sharps pushed the total to as high as 48.

"We went to 48, but we started seeing more money come in on the Under," Stewart says. "So we further adjusted and went down to 47.5."

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

For the week of Nov. 11 - Nov. 17.

Hot team

Minnesota Wild (3-0 SU)

The Wild are on an absolute tear and finished off a great week by defeating the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 Sunday night. The fantastic run by the Wild has been keyed by some stellar goaltending from Josh Harding. The Wild sit second in the league with a 2.00 GAA, while Harding is at or near the top in most goaltending categories - including a microscopic 1.25 GAA. They are on the road this week with stop in Montreal, Ottawa and Winnipeg.

Cold team

Detroit Red Wings (0-3 SU)

Many pundits felt that the Red Wings' move to the Eastern Conference could spell 'doom' for a few teams with playoff aspirations heading into this season. Perhaps not so. It has been a rough month or so for the Winged Wheel as they have just three wins since Oct. 19. This past week was particularly grueling as they dropped all three games and are now mired in a six-game losing streak. All three of their losses this week have come in a shootout, so they are at least competitive game in, game out. They are at home this week with games versus the Nashville Predators, Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators on tap.

Best Over play

Chicago Blackhawks (3-0 O/U)

The 'Hawks sputtered out of the gate this season (by Blackhawks standards) but have started hitting their stride. They have scored five goals in four of their last five games overall and currently lead the league with 3.6 goals per game. The Hawks were 3-0 O/U on the week but are 10-2 O/U in their last 12. A big road trip awaits this week with stops in Colorado, Winnipeg and Vancouver.

Best Under play

Los Angeles Kings (0-3-1 O/U)

It was a busy week for the Kings with four games played. Jonathan Quick is out with a groin strain, but the goaltending has not missed a beat. Ben Scrivens has come in and posted three wins in four games with exceptional play. The ex-Leaf netminder posted back-to-back shutouts at New Jersey and at the New York Rangers to close the week. The Kings have three games on the board this week with Tampa Bay, New Jersey and Colorado making a visit to the Staples Center.

Surveying the schedule

The Anaheim Ducks have been one of the best teams in the league, but are mired in a three-game losing streak. A busy week upcoming could provide some betting value due to back-and-forth traveling. The Ducks start with a Monday game at Pittsburgh before flying back to Anaheim to face New Jersey and Tampa Bay, the latter of which beat up on the Ducks 5-1 on Nov. 14. The Ducks will then travel to Phoenix to take on the Coyotes in a battle between two top teams in the insanely deep Pacific Division.

double-dime bet - 510 UTA / 509 GSW - UNDER 195.5
Analysis:
The Warriors are off a 102-88 home win over these Jazz in which they shot 51.2% from the field and led by double-digits after each one of the four quarters. These type of easy wins have tended to put the Warriors into a malaise, as they are 0-22 OU on the road with rest vs a rested opponent when they are off a win by more than eight points in which they led at the half and shot at least 47.5% from the field. The SDQL text is:

team=Warriors and A and 0<rest and o:rest>0 and p:margin>8 and p:FGP>47.5 and p:M2>0 and date>=20070422

This one is already 2-0 this season, with the most recent active date their 76-74 loss in San Antonio with the total at 201. Wow.

In addition, the Warriors are 1-18 OU on the road with rest when they are off a win by more than ten points in which they scored fewer than 16% of their points from the free throw line. Check it out with this SDQL text:

team=Warriors and A and 0<rest and p:PFT<16 and date>=20070422 and p:margin>10

This one is already 0-3 OU this season.

The Jazz are 0-6 OU (-10.92 ppg) at home after any game in which Enes Kanter was not the Jazz's high scorer and 0-10 OU at home after a loss in which Alec Burks played fewer than 30 minutes and shot worse than 30% from the field, staying under by an average of 17.6 ppg. The SDQL for the latter of these two is:

H and Alec Burks:p:FGP<30 and p:L and date>=20120330 and Alec Burks:p:minutes<30

The Warriors should simply provide the minimum effort necessary to put this one in the win column and the Jazz's best chance to win is to make this a low-scoring, half-court affair. Take the UNDER.

8:00p Southern Miss vs North Dakota State
Take: North Dakota State -5-110 in 2h
6* NCAAB *CA$H COW* on North Dakota State -5
The Key: North Dakota State brings back its entire starting five, and it will be extremely focused and motivated tonight after losing by double-digits at St. Mary's last game. The Bison have been nearly unbeatable at home where they are 13-1 in their last 14. North Dakota State is on a 9-1 ATS run following a double-digit road loss. It's also an impressive 26-10 ATS in its last 36 non-conference contests. The Golden Eagles have been a poor investment at 5-12-1 ATS in their last 18 games overall and 1-7-1 ATS in their last 9 road games. You also want to take home favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points like N. Dakota State that return two more starters than their opponent and had a good defense last season, one that held opponents to 42% shooting or worse. Doing so has produced a 41-14 ATS mark since 1997. Teams fitting these parameters have won by an average of 11.4 points. This system is 9-1 ATS the last 3 seasons and 3-0 ATS this season.

8:05p Charlotte Bobcats vs Chicago Bulls
Take: Charlotte Bobcats +11½-101 in 2h
6* NBA *CA$H COW* on Bobcats +11.5
The Key: The Bulls are being overvalued following four consecutive SU and ATS double-digit wins. The Bobcats have won their last 3 road games outright as underdogs and will be lacking no motivated here against a Chicago team that defeated them by 30 the last time they met. Prior to that loss, Charlotte had defeated the Bulls by double digits as an 11.5 point dog and lost by only 8 points as a 13-point dog for back-to-back covers in the series. The Bobcats are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Chicago, and the road team is a perfect 7-0 ATS in the last 7 meetings. The Bulls are a lousy 4-14 ATS as a home favorite of 6.5 to 12 points over the last 2 seasons. You also want to take underdogs of 10 or more points that have shot team 42% or worse in 3 straight games when they're up against a team that has allowed a shooting percentage of 42% or less in 5 straight games. Doing so has produced a 28-8 ATS mark since 1996. Teams fitting these parameters have been underdogs of 12.8 points on average but have lost by just 7.3 points on average. Take the points.

8:40p New England Patriots vs Carolina Panthers
Take: Carolina Panthers -1-115 in 3h
6* Monday Night Football *CA$H COW* on Panthers -1
The Key: Look for the red-hot Panthers to keep right on rolling against a New England team that has struggled on the road. The Patriots are 2-2 on the road and could be 1-3 or even 0-4. They needed a field goal in the closing seconds to pull out a win at Buffalo, and they needed to hold off Falcons in the final in Atlanta. They were fortunate Atlanta scored only one touchdown on six trips inside the 20 that day. The Bills and Falcons are 6-15 combined and don't have overwhelming defenses. The Patriots have lost their last two road games against the Bengals and Jets - teams with Top 10 defensive units. They face arguably the best defense in the league tonight. The Panthers rank No. 1 in total and scoring defense with 283.3 yards and 12.8 points per game allowed. They have been tough as nails against the run and the pass. The Patriots haven't been the same offensive juggernaut we've become accustomed to seeing either. They put up big points in their last game against Pittsburgh, but the Steelers are very mediocre defensively this year. The New England stop unit has struggled to stop the run, which means it will likely struggle to slow down Carolina's Top 10 running attack. You want to take all teams when the line is +3 to -3 following a close road win of 3 points or less, provided they have a winning percentage of 60-75% and are playing a team with a winning record. Doing so has produced a 35-11 ATS mark since 1983 and a perfect 8-0 ATS tally the last 5 seasons. It is also worth noting that New England is 0-6 ATS after 2 consecutive covers as a favorite over the last 3 season

3 Unit Play Take #530 Georgia State -15.5 over McNeese State (5:30pm est):
McNeese State comes into this season without their best player from last year in Desharick Guidry who is sitting the first semester out due to academic reasons. Add this loss into the fact they are missing their other top scorer from last year's team and what we have here is clearly a program that is a notch or two worse than even last year's 302nd ranked Kenpom team. This is a team that has played seven teams ranked higher than 113th ranked Georgia State the last two years and who are 1-6 in those games and have been outscored by over 22 points per game. In fact none of the six losses were by less than the 16 point spread we see here in this game today.

Georgia State comes in one of my top under the radar teams in all of CBB to begin this season. They have played just two games so far and so the Panthers remain an underrated squad coming into this game here. They have had almost a full week off to prepare for this game here and should come in completely focused especially after playing in a tight loss to a good Vanderbilt team their last game. This looks to be easily the best of the three teams head coach Ron Hunter has had since taking over the GSU program. Keep in mind that the Panthers won 22 games in Hunter's first season also.

Off a loss and with a week to prepare I expect a full out effort from a good Georgia State team here. Play Georgia State minus the points. My NBA season has started off on fire with a rock solid 11-7 mark overall and ahead profit wise on the season. I am bound and determined to have a very good pro hoops season this year and there is no doubt in my mind I will as I am locked in and ready to roll with a well thought out strategy I have tested and won with in the past. Join me and see for yourself as we still have a ton of season left and a lot of winning as well.

2-Unit Play #543 Take SE Missouri State (-1) over Ball State (7 p.m., Monday, November 18)
I simply think the Redhawks are better. The OVC school is one of the better teams in the league this year and they have more on the table to work with this season. SE Missouri State has won two straight by double digits after losing their opener to a good Saint Louis team. Beating Ball State here will be three in a row for them.

2-Unit Play #517 Take SMU (+4.5) over Arkansas (8 p.m., Monday, November 18)
The Mustangs have a lot going for themselves in the second year under head coach Larry Brown. SMU has all five starters back and begin the season in a new conference with some expectations. Arkansas graduated its top two players, and I think the underdog has the better team at this point in the season and will win this game outright. Take the points with the American Conference program.

2-Unit Play #535 Take Norfolk State (+1.5) over East Carolina (9:30 p.m., Monday, November 18)
The MEAC's top team are more talented team. East Carolina is a middle of the road, ho hum Conference USA team. They graduated its best two players from last season and I think this spread is just the product of oddsmakers assuming the more notable conference should be favored at home. Pendarvis Williams is the top player in the MEAC this year and he will be the best player in this game. He and the rest of his Spartan teammates will secure a non-conference win over the Pirates in this one.

2 Unit Play Take #536 East Carolina -1 ½ over Norfolk St (9:30p.m., Monday, Nov 18)
Yes the Pirates have lost some scoring from last year but this young season the ECU Pirates are averaging 92.3ppg. This should be a high scoring event and I see the Pirates nipping Norfolk St as the Pirates have the better athletics. East Carolina will stay perfect tonight and I would check back later because we might have a total play in this game as well. East Carolina is 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games and 4-0-1 ATS following a SU win.

4-Unit Play Take #518 Arkansas (-3.5) over SMU (7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18)
I had this line at -7 so I like the Razorbacks here. I already cashed with Arkansas once this year and I will again here. This team has one of the best home court advantages in college basketball. They are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games and they are 2-0 SU and ATS this year with two blowout wins. SMU is improving. But they are not ready to step up to this SEC school on the road. SMU lost its leading returning scorer last week when he decided to transfer. This team is still young and should get taught a lesson here.

3-Unit Play Take #524 Colorado (-13) over Arkansas State (8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18)
I like the Buffs at home here. Like Arkansas, Colorado has a big home court advantage. Arkansas State was blown out by 21 points at Wyoming on Saturday. They will be blown out here. Arkansas State is 0-8 ATS in its last eight games going back to last year and 0-3 ATS this year. They are just 2-6 ATS on the road. Colorado has rebounded from its opening game loss with three straight wins. Two of them were home blowouts by over 20 points. That is what this game will be.

3 Unit Play #518 Take Arkansas Razorbacks -3.5 over SMU Mustangs (8 pm) The Razorbacks have been a strong team in Fayetteville under Coach Mike Anderson. They have gone 33-5 under his tutelage and that includes going 18-1 last year. SMU is coached by Larry Brown and he has a solid group of players but they have many newcomers and thus it will take some time to gel against good teams. The Razorbacks 40 minutes of hell is much more effective at home than it is on the road and that again will be the case on Tuesday. The Hogs have covered 8 of their last 10 home games. SMU is 5-11 ATS (1 push) in their last 17 games against teams with a winning record.

PLAY: NEW ENGLAND/CAROLINA OVER
RATING: DOUBLE DIME PLAY

Tonight I am looking to the over in the Monday Night Game between New England & Carolina. There are a couple of reasons why I am looking this way. Bill Belichick has had 2 weeks to prepare for this Carolina defense and Belichick knows you are not going to run on this defense as only Buffalo has run for more than 105 yards against Carolina. With that said I expect New England to employ a game plan like they did against Pittsburgh where they spread the field with their passing game. They can do this now as this is the healthiest this offense has been all year. I also expect Cam Newton to make some big plays with his feet tonight as mobile QB's put more pressure on the New England defense. Buffalo and EJ Manuel and the Jets and Geno Smith put up 21 and 30 points against New England. My projection is 52 or more points will be scored tonight.

New England Patriots at Carolina Panthers (-3)/47- 8:40 ET ESPN

5* New England Patriots (+3)
Last Sunday, the Carolina defense erased the final question marks from the minds of their doubters. The
Panthers entered the game at San Francisco on a 4-0 ATS run. Their opponents, however, had all been losing teams. The questions lingered: Were the Panthers fat after stuffing themselves on cupcakes? They were playing on the strong home field of a 49ers team who was coming off their bye week and was on a 5-0 ATS run. But as the game wore on, it was clear the Panthers could go toe to toe with the powerful 49ers. The end result was a 10-9 Carolina victory in which they held San Fran to just 151 yards. Now, the Panthers enter on a 5-0 SU ATS run in which they have covered by 72 points, with a +8 net TO margin in those games. The surprising defense has led the way. For the season, they are allowing just 13 PPG and 283 YPG. They are controlling the point of attack, outrushing opponents by an average of 127-82. On this field, Carolina has been even more dominant allowing 4 opponents the total of only 37 points. Now, they are faced with a major challenge against the New England Patriots. When we last left New England, WRs Amendola and Gronkowski were returning to full health. QB Brady was leading an offense that put up 55 points and over 600 yards against the once vaunted Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, the Brady/Belichick combo has had 2 weeks to prepare for a 2 week primetime gauntlet which finds the 49ers facing Carolina tonight and hosting the Broncos on SNF next week. Be sure the Panthers have caught the attention of New England and the appropriate game plan is in place. We never stand in the way of New England in this role, and neither should you. In the L10Y, New England is 18-4-2 ATS (8-1 ATS L4Y) as a road dog.

CBKB
Cleveland St. at E. Michigan (-1-) 7:00 ET

5* Cleveland St (+1-)
Third year E. Mich HC Murphy (Boeheim disciple) is making a defensive mark this season with the Eagles. After gorging themselves at home on 3 cupcakes, Albion, Concordia, and Bobby Mo, the Eagles are a perfect3-0 allowing just 53 PPG. While that’s been happening, Cleveland St. has gone a highly respectable 2-1 with a home victory vs. Iona and a road split at San Fran and Tex-Arlington. The Vikings are far better prepared to play this contest. Motivation for 8th year HC Waters not an issue after his Vikings dropped to 14 victories following a combined 49 wins the previous two seasons. We play the better team at home against a Convo Center home court, where the Eagles are a non-threatening 29-15 SU previous 3 seasons.

Idaho St. at San Francisco (-17) 10:00 ET

5* San Francisco (-17)
The Idaho St. Bengal Tigers are one of my early season play against teams. Again this year, they will drop like a stone without a parachute to the bottom of the Big Sky. We faded them Saturday night in their 88-60 loss at Arizona St. Tonight, they are in the wrong place at the wrong time against a high-scoring San Francisco team who will be in no mood to show mercy. Friday night, we lost with the Dons in their 92-90 home court defeat to Nevada. I am sure the weekend was not pretty, as 6th year HC Walters cracked the whip. Under Walters, this has been an optimum spot for his Dons who are 19-7 ATS following a home loss. Against the defenseless Bengals, look for San Francisco to easily match their 92 PPG offensive output in rolling to a 20+ point victory.

Andre Gomes NBA Sides
506 OKL -9.0 (-110) vs 505 DEN
NBA - 505 Denver Nuggets @ 506 Oklahoma City Thunder
It's good that Oklahoma City faced a shorthanded Milwaukee team, as they would have lost the
game against the Bucks at 100%. Oklahoma City showed a clear lack of energy and they were
coming from tough road games at LA against the Clippers and at Golden State and so, they
couldn't handle the spot very well. They struggled everywhere offensively with just 17 assists:
they were poor down low and both Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook couldn't even get 10 FT
attempts, something that shows their clear lack of aggression during the game. Thanks to that,
Milwaukee was able to keep fighting for the win, even though they had pretty much no inside
game with Zaza Pachulia shooting 3-13 FG! Milwaukee managed to get some offensive production
from transitions with 16 fast break points and some outside shooting via O.J. Mayo. Oklahoma
City's tired starters were clearly saved by their bench, with their main five bench players
(Collison, Lamb, Adams, Jackson and Fisher) having net positives of +16, +10, +10, +11 and +5,
while the best of the starting five was Westbrook with a +8!
Denver is coming from a clear loss at Houston, where their defense was horrible. Of course
starting a frontcourt formed by J.J. Hickson and Kenneth Faried is a bad idea for any team that
wants to have a good defensive performance, as they both struggle on protecting the basket and
on their defensive positioning. However, Denver's guards weren't much better on defense.
Houston's backcourt did whatever they wanted on offense, with easy pick and rolls and a kick out
game that worked perfectly with Houston shooting 9-21 3pts, but also 23-30 (77%) FG near the
basket! Of course Denver's offense also created some good production, as Houston's perimeter
defense is very soft and so, Denver's most aggressive players had success against them: Ty
Lawson with 11-19 FG and Wilson Chandler with 5-10 FG, but that wasn't enough especially
because Dwight Howard had a good day at the free throw line with 17-24 FT!
I believe Oklahoma City's effort tonight will be much better. They are coming back home and they
will be facing a divisional rival, so I expect them to be fired up for tonight. With Denver struggling
to stop the opposing guards to have big games against them, I believe that the Nuggets will
heavily struggle against Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, especially because Denver's Head
Coach Brian Shaw will start once again Hickson and Faried in the frontcourt and they won't
protect the basket at all. Also Serge Ibaka has been playing on a beast mode and he will have the
edge over Faried, who is far from his best right now. Denver's offense is still quite inconsistent, as
Brian Shaw is yet to find the right rotations on the team, so with their bad shooting, I expect
Oklahoma City to pack the paint and defend them well. Therefore, I believe Oklahoma City will pick
up an easy win tonight and so, I'll be taking them in here.
Pick: 3 units (Single Dime Play) on 506 Oklahoma City Thunder (-9) @ -110
