Wednesday's Champions League betting cheat sheet

Champions League action continues Wednesday with Groups A, B, C and D taking the pitch.

Bayer Leverkusen v Manchester United (+140, +240, +220)

Why bet Leverkusen: Sitting second in the group at just one point behind United, Leverukusen will be out for a full three points before its final match against Sociedad. It won't be easy for the German club as the injury list is rather extensive. They've won back-to-back games domestically, but will be without second-leading goalscorer Sidney Sam wreaking havoc on the wing. The home crowd should be electric for this and a win puts them in a decent spot with the last-placed La Liga side next up.

Key players out/doubtful: Sidney Sam, Stefan Reinartz, Roberto Hilbert, Sebastian Boenisch, Andrés Palop

Why be Manchester United: A win in Germany puts the Red Devils through to the next stage. They got the best of Leverkusen at Old Trafford in the 4-2 victory earlier in the Group Stage and David Moyes will be pressing for a repeat performance. The midfield could be an issue for United, however. Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick are both out for this fixture, which could mean Tom Cleverley gets the nod. Cleverley struggled mightily against Cardiff on the weekend.

Key players out/doubtful: Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick, Rafael, Darren Fletcher
Previous match result: United 4, Leverkusen 2
Key betting note: United have beaten Leverkusen in their last three meetings in all competitions.

Juventus v Copenhagen (-700, +800, +2200)

Why bet Juventus: The Italian giants sit bottom in Group B with a slim chance of advancing. The Old Lady is on three points with Galatasaray and Copenhagen ahead with four. A full three points in Turin will go a long way for them in their Champions League quest. They drew with Real Madrid in their last Champions League effort and are rolling domestically so they should be extra motivated for this one.

Key players out/doubtful: Mauricio Isla, Simone Pepe, Stephan Lichtsteiner

Why bet Copenhagen: Admittedly, it will be a big ask for the Danish side to leave Italy with a positive result of any kind. This could basically shape up as Copenhagen playing for a draw in Turin and setting itself up for a big date with Madrid on the final match day, but that may not even be in the cards. Juve should be pressing forward from the outset with Copenhagen looking for a knockout from the counter attack.

Key players out/doubtful: N/A
Previous match result: Copenhagen 1, Juventus 1
Key betting note: Juventus has played over the 2.5 goal total in three straight Champions League matches.

Wednesday's other Champions League fixtures with odds:

CSKA Moscow v Bayern Munich (+700, +375, -225)
Anderlecht v Benfica (+275, +250, +110)
Manchester City v Viktoria Plzen (-600, +750, +2000)
PSG v Olympiakos (-250, +400, +800)
Real Madrid v Galatasaray (-350, +500, +1100)
Shakhtar Donetsk v Real Sociedad (-154, +310, +475)

Betting NCAAF teams on the bowl game bubble

Better late than never, right?

With the majority of FBS teams wrapping up their regular seasons this week, a handful of schools still have a shot at becoming bowl-eligible. Yet, with 70 teams having already gained bowl eligibility - matching the exact number of bowl slots available - there will be plenty of jockeying between teams with tenuous grips on a spot and those looking to join the fray.

Here are four teams facing must-win games this week:

Syracuse Orange (5-6, 3-4 ACC)

This week: vs. Boston College Eagles (7-4, 4-3)

The Orange had a golden opportunity to secure their bowl eligibility against Pitt, but the Panthers pulled out a 17-16 victory to lock up their own bowl bid last week. Syracuse has dropped back-to-back games - scoring just 19 points over that stretch - and won't be given any favors in their season finale facing an Eagles team looking to improve its own bowl standing. Even if Syracuse wins, there's no guarantee the Orange will land in a bowl game. The ACC already has 10 bowl-eligible teams, meaning that somebody will likely be left out if the Orange prevail.

Syracuse is a 2.5-point underdog against Boston College.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (5-5, 2-4 AAC)

This week: at Connecticut Huskies (1-9, 1-5)

The Scarlet Knights looked to be cruising to certain bowl eligibility after opening the season 4-1, but have since dropped four of their last five to leave their postseason status in doubt. Fortunately for Rutgers, the remaining schedule is a giant cupcake, beginning with Saturday's game in Connecticut. The Huskies are coming off their first victory of the season, but will be in tough against a Scarlet Knights offense racking up nearly 380 yards of total offense per game. And should Rutgers lose, it still has one more shot in its season finale against 2-8 South Florida.

Rutgers is a 3-point favorite versus Connecticut Saturday.

Florida Atlantic Owls (5-6, 3-4 C-USA)

This week: vs. Florida International Golden Panthers (1-10, 1-6)

The Owls' transformation from Conference USA also-ran to bowl eligibility contender has been nothing short of astounding. And the team is being rewarded for its hard work with the easiest game of any bubble team. Florida Atlantic enters as a heavy favorite against the Golden Panthers, who have lost six straight games, with their last three defeats coming by a combined 109 points. The Owls have reeled off three straight victories since interim coach Brian Wright took over for Carl Pellini, who stepped down after confessing to taking drugs.

Florida Atlantic is a 28.5-point favorite versus visiting FIU.

San Jose State Spartans (5-6, 4-3)

This week: vs. Fresno State Bulldogs (10-0, 7-0)

Having failed to lock up a bowl berth in each of the past three weeks, the Spartans have left themselves a truly unenviable task - defeating the 15th-ranked Bulldogs. Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr has been one of the most prolific players in the nation this season, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards and 39 touchdowns while leading the NCAA's second-ranked pass attack. San Jose State missed its best chance to enter the bowl conversation last week, dropping a 58-52 triple-overtime stunner to Navy behind seven rushing touchdowns from QB Keenan Reynolds.

San Jose State is an 8.5-point underdog against visiting Fresno State.

Spurs at Thunder What bettors need to know

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma CIty Thunder (-2.5, 201.5)

The San Antonio Spurs have won 11 consecutive games and can set a franchise record for best start if they can beat the host Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. San Antonio also started 13-1 in 2010-11 before losing its 15th game and the Spurs are outscoring opponents by 12 points per game and rank second in the NBA in scoring defense (90.1). Oklahoma City has won four consecutive games and is undefeated in six home contests.

The Thunder are off to their best home start since relocating to Oklahoma City and the last better season-opening home stretch for the franchise was when the Seattle SuperSonics won nine straight in 2004-05. Point guard Russell Westbrook will be well-rested for the matchup with San Antonio’s Tony Parker after sitting out Sunday’s win over the Utah Jazz. San Antonio is 6-1 on the road with the only loss coming against the Portland Trail Blazers on Nov. 2.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (San Antonio), FSN Oklahoma.

LINE: The line has held steady at -2.5. The total opened at 199 and has been bet up to 201.5.

COVERS POWER RANKINGS: San Antonio(-13.5) - Oklahoma City(-12.4) + home court (-3) = Oklahoma City -1.9

ABOUT THE SPURS (13-1, 8-6 ATS): San Antonio has posted seven double-digit victories during the 11-game winning streak, giving veterans like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Parker plenty of opportunities to stay fresh. All the starters played 25 minutes or less in Monday’s 112-93 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. “We’ve got 10 players that play every game,” Ginobili said after the rout. “We’re all concentrating and we’re all hustling. We’re getting hands on loose balls, and then offensively, we’re just moving the ball, attacking quick and finding open teammates.”

ABOUT THE THUNDER (9-3, 6-6 ATS): Westbrook has had five full days of rest for his surgically repaired knee since he last played in Thursday’s victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. The Thunder saw the scheduling quirk – and a game against the lowly Jazz – as an opportune time to give the knee a break after Westbrook played 30 or more minutes in nine straight games since his return. Westbrook is averaging 21.6 points and 5.1 assists and has scored 20 or more points six times.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 4-0-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
* Home team is 4-0-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Spurs are 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings in Oklahoma City.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The teams split four meetings last season with the home team winning each game.

2. Oklahoma City F Kevin Durant averaged 23.3 points against the Spurs last season with his outputs ranging from 19 to 26 points.

3. San Antonio C Tiago Splitter (ankle) is probable after missing the second half of the victory over New Orleans.

Wednesday, November 27

Kent State is 6-1, losing by hoop at Seton Hall, only top 100 team they played so far; Flashes are making 41.9% of their 3's- they won by 7 in OT at Youngstown LY, making 8-17 from arc while Penguins were 4-20. YSU is 6-1 but only games they played in last ten days were couple of jogs past D-III teams. Yuk. MAC home favorites are 7-8 vs spread.

Richmond coach Mooney used to coach Air Force; Spiders made 16-26 from arc LY in 91-68 home win over Falcons- they led by 31 with 7:50 left to play. This is first road game for Richmond, shooting just 21.7% on arc this year. AFA has turned ball over 22.4% of time, going 2-2 vs schedule without anyone in 250, so this is big jump in competition.

Portland is 3-3 but hasn't beaten anyone ranked higher than #196; Pilots lost last game in double OT Sunday- they're turning ball over 15.7% of time this year, compared to 23.3% LY, so big improvement. San Jose is 2-4, scoring 82 ppg while winning last two games; Spartans are 1-2 on road, losing by 12 at Santa Clara, 1 at NIU, winning at Pepperdine.

Utah is 5-0 against an amazing collection of stiffs; Ball State is #209 but still a huge jump in competition. Cardinals are 1-2 but both losses were to top 60 teams- they lost by point to Butler last game, after leading by 11 in second half. Butler hurt them with 20 offensive boards. Pac-12 home favorites are 20-15 against spread. MAC road underdogs: 7-8.

Saint Louis shot just 33% in 63-57 loss to Wisconsin last night, first loss in six games for Billikens, whose best win is over #124 Oral Roberts by 17 at home. Old Dominion was just 9-22 from line in 78-60 loss to WV Tuesday- only one Monarch played more than 28:00. Nine Billikens played 11+ minutes. Atlantic 13 favorites are 4-7 away from home.

Louisiana Tech was 29-43 from line in 103-78 rout of UIC Tuesday, as no Bulldog played more than 24:00. St Bonaventure survived its shaky (12-23) foul shooting to survive 70-67 over Wagner, after they led by 12 at half. C-USA favorites are 15-8 vs spread. Atlantic 13 underdogs are 11-7 against the spread. Both teams are playing for third day in row.

Gonzaga blew 16-point lead in Monday's loss to Dayton; they played D-II Chaminade yesterday, so this is their only chance for D-I win on this trip, vs Arkansas squad that made 8-17 and beat Minnesota by 14, after trailing by 5 at half- they scored 52 points in second half, will try and run with Zags. #90 Colorado State is only top 125 win for Gonzaga. Arkansas is 2-1 vs top 70 teams, losing by 8 to Cal Monday.

Dayton was down 16 Monday and won, up 14 Tuesday and lost; they played four subs 19+ minutes, made 11-20 from arc, but only got on the foul line nine times (7-9), getting outscored 10-3 in last 3:30 of a 1-point loss. Cal played without big man Solomon (eye) in loss to Syracuse, as four starters played 32+ minutes. Doubt Solomon will play in this one.

Syracuse made 23-24 from line, 7-14 from arc in 92-81 win over Cal, in game where three Orange 34+ minutes- Fair played all 40, frosh Ennis 37. Athletic Baylor was +10 on boards in 67-66 over Dayton, after they played D-II host Chaminade day before. Only two Bears played more than 33:00. All these Maui teams are playing for third day in row.

5-0 Arizona hasn't played in eight days; they come to stormy east with 42.1% mark behind arc, only 64.1% on line- they've got solid road win, at San Diego State by 9. Drexel will have crowd edge being fron Philly; Dragons lost by 5 at UCLA, has won three in row since, over bunch of stiffs. Drexel is defensive minded team that allows just 24.6% on arc.

Duke damn near lost at home to Vermont (91-90) Sunday; Blue Devils lost by 11 to Kansas, only top 150 team they've played so far. Duke is making 45.2% from arc, but they're neither experienced, deep or strong defensively. Alabama turned ball over 22% of time in 3-1 start, losing to Oklahoma by 9. ACC neutral court teams are 17-3 against the spread.

Vermont just lost by a point at Duke, but they lost by 23 at Bryant, by 7 at Wagner- they're 1-5 for God's sake, making just 26.4% on arc- they were 31-41 (75.6%) inside arc at Duke. Young Illinois State is 1-3, with losses by 9-8-38 points; Redbirds are making just 25% from arc, 41% inside it. MVC favorites are 7-0 away from home so far this month.

Indiana State is 3-1, making 50% of its 3's (#2 in US), 86.4% from line (#1 in US); they made 11-20 from arc in 83-70 win at Notre Dame ten days ago. Sycamores are not real athletic, but they all can shoot. Tulsa allowed 82.3 ppg in 0-4 start, but they've played Wichita/Creighton- its other two losses are by 6-3. C-USA underdogs are 16-13 vs spread.

Wednesday, November 27th
Denver Nuggets at Minnesota Timberwolves (-6) 8:05 ET

10* Minnesota Timberwolves

Credit to the Nuggets who are 7-6 SU following a 3 game win streak against Chicago and Dallas (twice). Their current run is 6-2 ATS but all that does is keep this price in line for a hungry Minnesota team who lost at Denver on the 15th of November and comes off back to back road losses at Indiana and Houston. This vastly improved team from last year has been outstanding at this price range as they enter today on a 4-0 ATS run as home favorite of -4 to -10 with those victories by 11, 29, 18 and 30 points.

CBKB

Illinois Chicago vs. Wagner (-9) 6:00 ET Estero, FL

10* Wagner (-9)

Let’s face it, you would bet international Ping-Pong if you knew it was going to be a winner. And the fact that you don’t know whether Wagner is a composer or a school on Staten Island, is of little consequence to you. We both know you only want winners and that’s what I’m here to provide. The Seahawks (that’s Wagner) return 4 RS from a 19 win team that finished 2nd in the NEC. This year, they are slated to win that league. They have already been hardened by stepping up in class to face St. Johns, Penn St., and St. Bonnie. Now, they drop a notch to face a troubled Ill-Chi team. The Flames have all but been extinguished of late, going 1-3 SU ATS. Those losses were by 20 to E. Ill, 35 to Northwestern, and 103-78 to LA Tech last night. In all, they have allowed an average of 92 PPG to those teams. This is far from the type of defensive team expected by Ill-Chi HC Moore, a defensive disciple of Wisconsin Bo Ryan. Until the Flames show a flicker, expect Wagner to snuff them out.

Oklahoma City Thunder -2.5 (x1)

I am liking the Oklahoma City Thunder at home against the SA Spurs. The Thunder really counter well against what the Spurs are trying to do offensively and defensively. The Spurs run a high pick and roll offense so on just about every play, Parker will have the ball at the top of the 3 point line and then will run a pick and roll. Spurs currently rank 4th in points per possession at .84 in pick and roll ball handler situations. This style of offense plays right into OKC's favor as they are ranked #2 defensively in Pick and Roll Ball Handler situations and #2 in Pick and Roll Man situations. Overall, the Thunder are the #1 team in the NBA defending the pick and roll. This is due to having two tough minded, strong defenders in PG Russell Westbrook and PG Reggie Jackson. Also, having two mobile bigs in Ibaka and Perkins helps their pick and roll defense. Ibaka can show far out on screens but still has the foot speed to get back if the handler does decide to take it to the basket. Perkins does a good job in this area as well. Sure enough, Tony Parkers worst numbers last year against any opponent was against the Thunder who he averaged 10ppg on 36% shooting against. Westbrook does a very good job staying in front of Parker and contesting his jump shots. I also think some of Parkers poor offensive numbers has to do with the fact that he has to expend a ton of energy trying to defend a very active Westbrook on the other end of the court. When Tony Parker doesn't really have it going, this SA team struggles. They can't count as much on the older Manu and Duncan anymore. Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green really play off of these 3 guys and can't get too much on their own. The Spurs offensive possessions will end up in a good amount of spot up 3's and some post ups. OKC ranks 12th in 3pt defense and I think Ibaka/Perkins are very capable post defenders who will be able to hold their own in the post.

I think the Thunder will have success on offense because the Spurs biggest defensive strength is their post defense with Duncan/Splitter. The Thunder run post plays on just 6% of their plays and the majority of the time, it's Kevin Durant in the post and Leonard will have a tough time stopping him there. When Ibaka does get the ball down low, he will normally face up the defender so it's not your traditional style post up play that SA is very good against. The Thunder never run any post plays for Perkins. OKC is a very good offensively running isolation plays and I think they will have a lot of success tonight. Westbrook should be able to get whatever he wants with the smaller, weaker Parker on him. Ibaka shot 52.5% from the field and averaged a double-double against the Spurs last year and I think he will have success against the slower bigs in Duncan/Splitter. They will have a very tough time coming way out on the perimeter to contest his jump shots and he will be able to drive by them when they do come way out. Durant obviously is always going to put up numbers and none of the Spurs defenders in Leonard/Green/Belinelli can check him.

The Thunder are a team that play very well when rested. Over the last 3 years, they are 22-4 straight up with 2-3 days rest. They are a young, athletic team so they can be very hard to stop when coming in fresh to these games. Westbrook was given the night off against Utah last game as well so he will be ready to go. This is just their 3rd game in 9 nights and they have not taken a single flight in 10 days. Being at home allows them to be able to get in a lot of practices. The Spurs on the other hand are not so rested playing their 4th game in 6 nights. They are a team that play much better when rested as well.

The Thunder have had a lot of success against the Spurs playing in OKC winning the last 5 straight by an average of +11.8 points per game. The starters on these teams are the same. The benches have changed a bit. OKC's bench has impressed me especially at home where they ranked 3rd In efficiency difference. The bench is shooting 49% at home while allowing just 40.8% to their opponents. Lamb has been giving them a scoring punch and he stretches the defense with his outside shooting. Reggie Jackson started in last years playoff and gained some good experience. He's one of the best back up PG's in the NBA. Rookie C Steven Adams has been solid down low getting them rebounds and paint points. Fisher and Collision are two veteran players who also play well for them. I think the benches will likely cancel each other out and I think the Thunder starters just matchup well against SA and will give them an edge. I see the Thunder winning by around 7 points.

5-unit Play Take #68 Detroit Red Wings (+110) over Boston Bruins (7:35pm EST) The Detroit
Red Wings have certainly been struggling recently, but you're not going to find them as a home
underdog often. The Wings have won just one of their last 10 home games, but that is a misleading fact. Seven of those losses were in overtime or a shootout - games that could have
easily gone either way. Detroit is still in playoff position at the moment and would qualify if the
season ended today as the #7 seed. That's actually the same spot they finished last season, so
this team isn't performing all that much differently than what they're accustomed to. The Boston
Bruins have been pretty consistent all season long, but they're coming off of an emotional
overtime win against the Penguins 4-3. I'm not sure they'll be as focused for this one, so we'll
take Detroit as a home underdog tonight.

3-unit Play Take #53 Ottawa Senators (+125) over Washington Capitals (7:05pm EST) The
Ottawa Senators haven't quite gotten their act together yet this season, but tonight is a good
opportunity to turn things around. The Sens go up against a Capitals team that has dropped three
straight games, and Ottawa has had their number in the recent meetings. The Caps have dropped
four straight to the Senators and were outscored 16-7 collectively in those games. Before the
season started, many experts projected Ottawa to be one of the top teams in the Eastern
Conference. Injuries have played a part in their struggles, but I still think this team has it in them
to be one of the better squads in the NHL. They have one of the best goalie tandems in the
league and lots of grit and determination - all things that the Capitals lack. They're the better
team between these two and we'll take Ottawa at a nice underdog price.

3-unit Play Take #65 Philadelphia Flyers (+105) over Tampa Bay Lightning (7:35pm EST) The
Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning are going in opposite directions right now. The Flyers
come as winners in six of their last eight games and feeling good under head coach Craig Berube.
The season didn't start that way as Philadelphia let go of mainstay Peter Laviolette just a few
games in, but the team has certainly responded after getting comfortable in Berube's system. The
Lightning are without their superstar Steven Stamkos and it has affected them. Tampa has
dropped four of five and has had problems putting the puck in the net. They are just one for their
last 16 power play chances. I expected the Flyers to be slight favorites here, so there's definitely
some value with them at this price.

3-unit Play Take #76 San Jose Sharks (-160) over Los Angeles Kings (10:35pm EST) The
handicap on tonight's game between the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings is very simple.
The home team has dominated this series going back the last four seasons. Home teams are 21-6
during that span including a current streak of 10 straight. Both teams possess a great home ice
advantage overall, so this isn't a big surprise. The Kings beat the Sharks in the playoffs last
season and also took care of business in the first meeting of the 2013-14 season. That should
give the Sharks even more motivation tonight. Take San Jose to win this game.

Kentucky got a real scare the other night and its obvious this team just does not know how to play with each other yet. We are talking about a group of all freshman. Eastern Michigan are all seniors and although the talent gap clearly favors the Wildcats I just don’t trust them to put together a solid 40 minutes of basketball to be able to blow every single team out this year. If Cleveland State could hang tough why can’t Eastern Michigan. This is also an early tip time at 4PM EST. Take Eastern Michigan.

OC Dooley:“1 UNIT” NBA LINETRACKER (Bulls +3’ at Pistons in a 7:35 eastern tipoff): There has been no significant offshore line inflation in this contest even though Chicago limps in with a horrible overall ROAD record (1-7) which included a humiliating Monday setback against a Utah contingent that had previously came out on top just once. But one has to consider Monday was a major revenge spot for the Jazz who just a couple of weeks prior were crushed in a 24-point loss in the Windy City. Of course the big news for the Bulls is the season-ending injury to star Derrick Rose even though this well-coached contingent is now used to being without his services which was the case a year ago. Host Detroit comes into tonight have successfully won-and-covered consecutive contests, but that was on the heels of a nasty 2-7 SU/ATS slide. While Chicago traditionally has been one of the league’s best defensive sides, Detroit’s defensive intensity on most nights has been poor as they are allowing the opposition to average 100 points per contest. This is a law-of-averages wager as Chicago checks having lost four in a row outright, but the Bulls have not dropped five in a row since way back in the 2010 campaign

Game: Los Angeles Lakers at Brooklyn (7:30 PM Eastern)
Pick: Los Angeles Lakers +2 (-110) at 5Dimes

There were a lot of expectations for both of these teams entering the season, but the results simply have not been there. The Lakers try to hold serve until Kobe is back, and doing his thing. the Nets made a lot of moves in the offseason, but this team has not found the chemistry to let the talent play the right roles yet. Brooklyn is just 4-10 on the season, and three of those wins were by 2 points or less, so just one time all season have they beaten this line. The Lakers have started to find some answers as they have been 4-0-1 ATS in their last five, while the Nets are still searching for theirs. Play on LA.
