Las Vegas Bowl: What bettors need to know

Fresno State Bulldogs vs. Southern California Trojans (-6, 63)

ROYAL PURPLE LAS VEGAS BOWL STORYLINES:

1. Fresno State had its BCS hopes dashed with a loss in its final regular-season game, but motivation shouldn’t be an issue when the Bulldogs face USC in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 21. "Any time Fresno State gets a chance to play against BCS teams like USC we get up for it and our fan base gets up for it," coach Tim DeRuyter said. The Bulldogs are led by quarterback Derek Carr, who has passed for a nation-leading 4,866 yards with 48 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

2. USC looks to finish on a high note while playing for its third coach this season. Offensive coordinator Clay Helton will lead the Trojans in Las Vegas before new coach Steve Sarkisian takes over next season.

3. Fresno State defeated the Trojans 24-7 in the 1992 Freedom Bowl in Anaheim, Calif., and USC escaped with a thrilling 50-42 victory on Nov. 19, 2005 in Los Angeles. The teams are scheduled to open the 2014 season against each other in Los Angeles on Aug. 30.

ABOUT FRESNO STATE (11-1, 5-7 ATS): The Bulldogs boast the top-ranked passing and fifth-ranked scoring offense in the country, but allowed 736 total yards in a 62-52 loss at San Jose State and have struggled mightily against the pass. USC receivers Marqise Lee and Nelson Agholor should thrive against the Bulldogs’ much-maligned secondary, which could receive a boost if cornerback L.J. Jones returns after missing the last five games with a knee injury. Carr’s favorite target is star wideout Davante Adams, who has 122 catches for 1,645 yards and 23 touchdowns.

ABOUT USC (9-4, 6-7 ATS): The Trojans went 6-2 with impressive wins against Arizona and Stanford under interim coach Ed Orgeron, who was replaced after a 35-14 loss to rival UCLA in the regular-season finale. The Pac-12’s second-ranked scoring defense figures to be tested by the explosive Bulldogs, and cornerback Josh Shaw’s matchup against the dynamic Adams should be worth the price of admission. The Trojans can’t match the Bulldogs’ offensive firepower, but quarterback Cody Kessler has improved after a shaky start.

With Andre Drummond emerging as a star, Detroit has taken off this month. The
Pistons haven't had a good as offensive rebounder since Dennis Rodman. The Pistons
were 22-11-1 ATS versus foes with a losing record through this past Tuesday. This is
the Bobcats' third game in four days. They have a much easier game tomorrow hosting
Utah.

*Indiana over Houston by 8
The league's No. 1 defense and home-court advantage figure to trump Houston's topranked offense. Indiana swept two games from Houston last season holding James
Harden to 11-for-43 shooting from the floor while winning by a combined 19 points.

Toronto doesn't look as strong on paper minus Rudy Gay, but the Raptors may be

unhappy and hasn't been 100 percent bothered by an ankle injury. Los Angeles' backcourt remains near depleted with Jordan Farmar out with a hamstring tear and Steve Nash (check status) sidelined leaving banged-up journeyman Steve Blake as the lone true point guard.

NBA betting: Kobe Bryant out six weeks

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has a fractured bone in his left knee and is expected to be sidelined for six weeks, the team announced on Thursday.

Bryant had just returned to the Lakers on Dec. 8 from a torn Achilles tendon, which he suffered last spring. In six games for the Lakers this season Bryant averaged 13.8 points and 6.3 assists per game.

With Bryant in the lineup the Lakers went 2-4 SU and ATS. Before his return the Lakers were 10-9 SU and 12-6-1 ATS.

Bryant just recently signed a three-year $48.5 million dollar contract extension.

I know, hold your nose. Nebraska Omaha will be up for this game and this young program has really shown promise quickly. This is a team that won 11 games with Derrin Hansen at the helm and this year in his 3rd year has already posted 8 wins. And to this school's credit, for such a young program to lose by just 8 points to Iowa who is a top 20 power ranking team on the road, or lose to UNLV a top 100 team on the road by 3 points, or lose to Drake who is a top 110 team on the road by 8 points is really impressive. So after facing the likes of Iowa, UNLV and Drake, this team has lost by no more than 8 points to anyone all year which is impressive. And, I think the Iowa contest was considerably tougher than this contest will be. I think Minnesota will have their hands absolutely full today with Nebraska Omaha. I like Coach Hansen's team to give this team fits and Minnesota to have trouble from the start here as I would not be surprised if this is similar to the Arlington+17.5 a couple days ago as this is likely to be a close game. This is a great public fade to boot as the Mavericks of Nebraska Omaha are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games and the Gophers of Minnesota are 4-9 ATS when facing teams with a winning record.

Note, this team beat the Bulls at home by 10 points as well as a Coach Brown team relies heavily on defense and after giving up 109 points to this team on the road, look for them to have a better performance here. The 76ers came home from Brooklyn where they were demolished to face this team again, but will head back on the road to take on the Bucks in their next game. As mentioned, the Nets destroyed Philadelphia in their last meeting at home, and have Indiana to prepare for after this 1-game road trip. Could they possibly be looking ahead to their big home showdown against the Pacers? Hmmm

Meanwhile, the 76ers have been at home waiting for this rematch with 4 days of rest. Philadelphia will not be looking ahead to anyone, and you can bet they have revenge on their minds after being embarrassed in that blowout loss to the Nets a few days ago. Regardless of whether or not Young requested a trade, he is a 76er for now. Also, there is a good possibility Michael Carter-Williams will be playing tonight. He is listed as questionable, but he should be on the floor for this game.

The line is currently at 6 points favoring the road team. Really? Brooklyn seems to be getting it together, and Philadelphia has been inconsistent, but the situations here are steering me towards the team with more motivation tonight. The Indiana Pacers are staring at their longest losing streak and are showing some cracks in their NBA-best defense. The Houston Rockets, who own the NBA’s second-best scoring offense, will take aim at those cracks when they visit the Pacers on Friday. Indiana had a win in hand over the rival Miami Heat on Wednesday before a breakdown in the last few minutes handed them back-to-back losses for the first time this season.

Indiana was outscored 12-2 in the final minutes at Miami to suffer a 97-94 loss but quickly turned the page to focus on the Rockets at practice on Thursday. “I don’t look at their record,” coach Frank Vogel said of Houston. “I look at them as a championship contender. … They’re very capable of putting it all together to beat a team that comes out of the West.” The Rockets surround Dwight Howard with 3-point shooters and drive-and-kick specialists and will see how that style plays against a pair of big front lines in their two-game trip through Indiana and Detroit.

Nebraska Omaha has been good to us in a couple of spots this season and we are looking to back them again tonight. If you look at their schedule, they have been really competitver with some good teams this season on the road, most notably an 8-point loss at Iowa and a 3-point loss at UNLV. Now Richard Pitino has done a really nive job so far with Minnesota in his first season at the helm and they boast wins over Florida State and at Richmond. Omaha scores about 7 ppg more than Minnesota and are shooting 46.9% from the field this season. These teams are dead even in rebounding and Minnesota holds a very small advantage on the glass.
