Analysis: Middle Tennessee makes a bowl appearance for the first time in three years, and struggled when it came to covering the spread. The Blue Raiders’ last effort ended in a defeat as a -1.5 favorite. Navy has put up solid numbers this year when it comes to handicapping, but most of the success has come as an underdog. As a favorite, the Midshipmen have a 7-12 ATS mark the past three years. Navy was thrashed in last year’s bowl game as 13-point underdogs. Early money has been on Middle Tennessee, resulting in a half-point drop, but the action has tightened of late.

Early money is solidly behind Mississippi, though their handicapping performance this year was decidedly average, and the line has yet to move. Still, the Yellow Jackets have come upshort the last four times as a dog, so playing the chalk might be the right idea.

Analysis: The Red Raiders again reach the postseason, this time under new head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Last season, Texas Tech won their bowl game, but failed to cover as 13-point chalk. However, a 7-0 start was followed by five straight losses. Arizona State poured on the offense in their bowl matchup last year, scoring 62 points in three quarters to easily cover the 13-point spread. The Sun Devils fell apart in the PAC-12 title game, losing big as a slight favorite. Early money gives a strong lean to the Sun Devils, but a letdown may be in order.

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best - and worst - basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Dec. 22 to 28.

Hottest ATS - Indiana Pacers (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS)

The Eastern Conference's hottest ATS play was at it again last week, taking care of business with a one-sided victory over the Boston Celtics and consecutive routs of the Brooklyn Nets. Indiana is now 21-8-0 ATS on the season, providing terrific value despite dealing with increasingly larger spreads along the way. The defense remains one of the stingiest in the NBA, and the Paul George-led offense has proven capable of matching up with the league's other top units. Expect the good times to continue this week with home games against Cleveland and New Orleans and a road date in Toronto.

Coldest ATS - Denver Nuggets (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS)

The Nuggets have fallen off a cliff in December, losing six straight overall and six in a row ATS. This past week was a particularly galling one for Denver, which managed just 81 points in a home loss to the Golden State Warriors before being blown out in back-to-back road games at New Orleans and Memphis. The week proved to be a microcosm of the season for the Nuggets, who no longer boast one of the league's premier offensive attacks and can't defend to save their lives. The Nuggets have a three-game homestand against Miami, Philadelphia and Memphis before facing the Lakers in L.A.

Best Over play - Atlanta Hawks (2-1 SU, 3-0 O/U)

The Hawks' success as an Over play last week is certainly skewed by the fact that they played three consecutive overtime games - but hey, an over is an over. And bettors shouldn't ignore the fact that Atlanta was a terrific Over bet even before the OT spree as it has now gone over in eight-straight games and is 20-10 O/U for the season, the second-best mark in the conference. However, the loss of leading scorer Al Horford to a torn pec may make it difficult to maintain that pace. Atlanta plays road games against Orlando, Boston and Chicago and hosts Golden State this week.

Best Under play - Chicago Bulls (1-1 SU, 0-2 O/U)

The holiday week provided the Bulls with some much-needed rest - and bettors with a solid under play in a week where the over dominated. Chicago opened the week with one of its trademark defensive efforts, holding the Brooklyn Nets to 35.2 percent from the field in a 95-78 triumph. The Bulls then followed it up with one of its worst efforts of the season, a 105-83 setback to the Dallas Mavericks. Chicago has been a consistent Under play - going 3-7 in the last 10 - and will be a decent bet to continue that trend this week with games versus Memphis, Toronto, Boston and Atlanta.

Surveying the schedule

Apparently the Detroit Pistons have jelled more quickly than oddsmakers had anticipated. The retooled Pistons have been one of the best Over plays so far this season, though that trend has shifted with Unders in each of their previous two contests. Part of that could be attributed to a packed schedule as no team in the East has played more games through Saturday than the Pistons (32). That's what makes the coming week a pivotal one - Detroit plays just once in the next seven days, hosting the Washington Wizards Monday night. Expect a well-rested Detroit team to return to form in January.

Each week, we look back on the NHL betting scene and give you the best - and worst - hockey bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Dec. 22 to 28.

Hot team

Anaheim Ducks (2-0 SU)

Stop us if you've heard this one before. The Ducks have been the class of the NHL for the past month, winning 10 games in a row and earning points in 13 straight. The holiday break limited Anaheim to just two games over a seven-day stretch, but it made good by earning 3-2 victories over the Washington Capitals and Phoenix Coyotes. The Ducks will face their most difficult test in a while this week, taking on the San Jose Sharks in a pivotal home-and-home series, while the week ends with a home game against lowly Edmonton.

Cold team

Minnesota Wild (0-3 SU)

A hot start to the season has been vaporized by a terrible five-week stretch that has seen Minnesota go just 5-10-1 while losing their starting goaltender (Josh Harding) and top goal-scoring option (Zach Parise) along the way. The Wild played three road games last week, and struggled in each of them - dropping consecutive 4-1 decisions to the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers before losing a 6-4 slugfest in Winnipeg. The coming week offers some relief - home games against the Islanders and Sabres should help - but a game against St. Louis on New Year's Eve will be a big test.

Best Over play

Chicago Blackhawks (3-0 O/U)

Chicago betrayed bettors the week prior to the holiday break, playing three straight Unders after boasting one of the best O/U records in the league to that point. So how did the Blackhawks respond? With vigor, of course. The league-leading Chicago offense reeled off 18 goals in three games this week, earning one-sided victories over the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche before being bested in a shootout by St. Louis. Expect a tighter game Monday against Los Angeles, but road dates against the Isles and Devils could bear more Over fruit.

Best Under play

New York Rangers (0-2 O/U)

The Rangers were the anti-Blackhawks this week, following up a 4-0-2 Over stretch with consecutive Under plays in a 2-1 shootout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs and a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Washington Capitals. The scoring just hasn't been there for New York, which comes into the start of the week ranked 27th in the league in goals (2.3) despite a power-play ranked 11th (18.9 percent). This week could be a difficult one for the Rangers, who face four-straight road games against Tampa Bay, Florida, Pittsburgh and Toronto.

Surveying the schedule

It's called a holiday break, but few teams enjoyed much of a rest period due to the condensed NHL schedule. The Vancouver Canucks were one of the lucky ones, with a full seven days between their previous game against the Winnipeg Jets and Sunday's showdown with the Calgary Flames. The Canucks will make up for it in a big way, playing five times over an eight-day stretch coming out of the break - following up their game in Calgary with a mini-homestand against Philadelphia and Tampa Bay and games in Los Angeles and Anaheim.

EPL betting: Manchester City now Even to win league

In the midst of a four-game winning streak and despite sitting one point back of table-toppers Arsenal, Manchester City is now at Even odds to win the Barclays Premier League title.

While not as convincing at home over the weekend, the Citizens moved to a perfect 10-for-10 at home with a 1-0 victory over 17th-placed Crystal Palace.

The Gunners, which moved back to the top spot after a 1-0 victory at Newcastle, is now 4/1 to capture the league crown.

FRANKLIN AMERICAN MORTGAGE MUSIC CITY BOWL STORYLINES

1. Two highly productive offenses will be on display when Georgia Tech meets Mississippi in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl on Dec. 30 in Nashville, Tenn. The Yellow Jackets are fifth in the nation in rushing (311.7) with a variety of weapons and Ole Miss has shown a bit more balance with quarterback Bo Wallace throwing for 3,090 yards and 17 touchdowns. Georgia Tech is 4-5 since beating Duke and North Carolina while the Rebels finished with two losses, but own solid victories over LSU and Texas.

2. The key may be which defense can come up with a big play to turn the momentum. All-SEC defensive back Cody Prewitt has six interceptions for Ole Miss, including one each in the last two games, and Georgia Tech defensive end Jeremiah Attaochu is tied for second in the country in sacks with 12.

3. Georgia Tech plays in a bowl game for the 17th straight season and is 23-18 overall after snapping a seven-game losing streak with a 21-7 victory over USC in last year’s Sun Bowl. The Rebels are 22-12, including wins in nine of their last 10 bowl games, and have split with the Yellow Jackets – winning the 1971 Peach Bowl and losing the 1953 Sugar Bowl.

TV: 3:15 p.m., ESPN.

LINE: Ole Miss has held as 3-point faves. The total is down one point to 56.5.

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the mid-30s with a 20 percent chance of rain. Wind will blow toward the SE endzone at 4 mph.

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI (7-5, 3-5 SEC): Wallace completes 64.4 percent of his passes and has three receivers with impressive numbers - Donte Moncrief (53 catches, 825 yards), Ja-Mes Logan (44, 583) and Laquon Treadwell (67, 557). The Rebels have given up 196 yards or more on the ground five times this season and an average of 155.2 overall. Ole Miss does not have a standout runner, but put up 187.4 rushing yards per contest and the Rebels had 340 passing against Auburn in an eight-point loss on the road.

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (7-5, 5-3 ACC): David Sims rushed for at least 100 yards in three of his last five contests to lead the team with 846 and 11 touchdowns while versatile Robert Godhigh had three 100-yard games running the ball and is the team’s leader in receiving yards. Quarterback Vad Lee had four touchdown passes against a solid Duke defense in the second game and only six in the other 11 while completing only 47.2 percent of his passes. Attaochu has 31 career sacks to tie Greg Gathers (1999-2002) for the school record.

VALERO ALAMO BOWL STORYLINES

1. Texas coach Mack Brown's swan song with the Longhorns comes against the 12th-ranked Oregon Ducks in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30 in San Antonio. Texas announced Dec. 14 that Brown will step down after 16 seasons, during which he has compiled a 158-47 record - making him the second-winningest coach in the program's rich history behind Darrell Royal (167). Brown led the Longhorns to two Big 12 titles and the 2005 national championship, but Texas struggled to a 30-20 record over the past four seasons, including 19-17 in the Big 12.

2. Oregon went from national championship contender to having its streak of four straight BCS bowls snapped thanks to November losses at Stanford (26-20) and Arizona (42-16), but the Ducks say they won't lack motivation despite the lower-tier postseason invitation. "We had a tough four-game stretch here at the end of the season, stubbed our toe a little bit," Oregon coach Mark Helfrich told the Ducks' website. "But we'll be hungry to get back out there."

3. The Ducks' up-tempo spread offense is similar to the system employed by Baylor, which rolled up 508 total yards in a 30-10 win over the Longhorns in the regular-season finale. Texas will need defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat - the Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year - to be a constant fixture in the backfield to disrupt Oregon's timing and give the Longhorns a chance to keep pace on the scoreboard.

LINE: The Ducks opened as 13-point faves and are now -14. The total has held steady at 67.

ABOUT OREGON (10-2, 7-2 Pac-12): Even with former coach Chip Kelly gone to the NFL, the Ducks continue to put up prolific offensive numbers, ranking second in the nation in total yards (573.1) and third in scoring (46.8). Quarterback Marcus Mariota's Heisman Trophy candidacy fizzled when the threw four interceptions and fumbled five times in the last four games of the regular season, but expects to be fully recovered from a lingering knee injury for the bowl game. The Ducks will be without tight end Pharaoh Brown (10 catches, 123 yards, two touchdowns), who was suspended for his role in a snowball fight on campus that escalated and resulted in innocent bystanders being pelted with snowballs, but he is a minor player in the passing game as eight Ducks have more receptions with Josh Huff (57 catches, 1,036 yards, 11 TDs) leading the way.

ABOUT TEXAS (8-4, 7-2 Big 12): The Longhorns were written off early after losses to BYU (40-21) and Mississippi (44-23) but rebounded in conference play and found themselves in a de facto Big 12 title game against Baylor in the season finale. The offense is built around the running game with Malcolm Brown (774 yards, nine touchdowns) leading the way since Johnathan Gray's season-ending injury, but Texas struggles when playing from behind because of quarterback Case McCoy's inconsistency. The defense has scuffled against strong rushing teams - allowing 200 or more yards four times, including a whopping 550 yards against Brigham Young - so it might have its hands full against Oregon's read option.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY HOLIDAY BOWL STORYLINES

1. The Rose Bowl was the preferred destination but No. 17 Arizona State plans to take the National University Holiday Bowl seriously as it looks for the school’s first 11-win campaign since 1996. The Sun Devils had a seven-game winning streak snapped with a loss to Stanford in the Pac-12 title game but are rising under second-year coach Todd Graham. Texas Tech collapsed after a 7-0 start and is saddled with a five-game losing streak.

2. Red Raiders quarterback Baker Mayfield (12 touchdown passes) decided to transfer in the second week of December so it appears Davis Webb will be the starter against the Sun Devils. Webb (16 TD passes) started five games this season and ended up with the same number of yards (2,315) and interceptions (nine) as Mayfield. Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said Michael Brewer (10 pass attempts) will compete with Webb for the starting role.

3. The status of Arizona State running back Marion Grice (lower-leg injury) remains uncertain after he missed the past two games. The multipurpose threat has rushed for 996 yards and 14 touchdowns and found the end zone six more times as a receiver.

LINE: The Sun Devils opened as 13.5-point faves and are now -14. The total is up two points from the opening number of 69.5.

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (7-5, 4-5 Big 12): No matter who ends up playing quarterback, he has two superb targets to throw to in tight end Jace Amaro and receiver Eric Ward. Amaro led the Big 12 with 98 receptions and his 1,240 yards rank fifth in school history, while Ward racked up 80 catches for 904 yards and a team-best eight touchdowns. The defense allows 31.2 points – including an atrocious 48.6 average during the five-game skid – but features strong players in linebacker Will Smith (team-best 106 tackles) and defensive end Kerry Hyder (team-leading 11.5 tackles for loss).

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (10-3, 8-1 Pac-12): The Sun Devils average 41 points but a defense that racked up 21 interceptions and 40 sacks has also been a crucial factor in the highly successful season. Defensive tackle Will Sutton had 10.5 tackles for loss and was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and safeties Robert Nelson (six) and Alden Darby (four) combined for nearly half the picks. Quarterback Taylor Kelly is a multipurpose threat with 3,510 yards and 28 touchdowns as a passer and 473 yards and eight scores as a runner and wideout Jaelen Strong caught 71 passes for 1,094 yards.

BELL HELICOPTER ARMED FORCES BOWL STORYLINES
1. Middle Tennessee finished the regular season with a flourish, cruising to five straight wins by scoring an average of 42.6 points. That streak earned the Blue Raiders a date with Navy in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, Texas, on Dec. 30. The Midshipmen crushed rival Army in their annual showdown on Dec. 14 and enters bowl season with a four-game winning streak thanks to a dominating ground attack.

2. Middle Tennessee doesn’t run it quite as much as Navy but can pile up yards on the ground behind Jordan Parker and Reggie Whatley, who combined for 1,372 rushing yards in the regular season. Quarterback Logan Kilgore finished the season strong with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions during the season-ending winning streak for the Blue Raiders.

3. No team in college football throws it less than the Midshipmen, who dominate on the ground with a triple-option attack. Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds averaged 10.1 pass attempts and 23.3 rushing attempts in guiding an offense that puts up an average of 34.3 points.

LINE: Navy opened -6 and is now -6.5. The total opened 56.5.

ABOUT MIDDLE TENNESSEE (8-4, 6-2 Conference USA): The Blue Raiders are making a return to bowl play for the first time since falling to Miami (Ohio) in the GoDaddy.com Bowl after the 2010 season and are focused on picking up the school’s third bowl win in history. “You have your destination and objective in mind,” Kilgore said of returning to practice after exams. “… After we progress the next couple of days, we’ll start tightening down more for Navy.” Middle Tennessee tightened its defense over the last four games, but surrendered 177 yards on the ground in a 48-17 victory over Texas-El Paso in the regular-season finale.

ABOUT NAVY (8-4): The Midshipmen played the final regular-season game of the college season against rival Army and showed off the effectiveness of the triple option by churning out 343 of their 353 yards on the ground in the 34-7 victory. Reynolds’ three rushing touchdowns gave him 29 on the season, breaking the NCAA single-season record of 27 shared by former Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs (2009) and Kansas State’s Collin Klein (2011). Navy gave most of its opponents fits and nearly pulled off an upset at Notre Dame on Nov. 2 before falling 38-34.

Kansas split its last six games but five of those were vs teams in top 50; Jayhawks are making 57.5% of shots inside arc- they haven't played in nine days since whacking Georgetown by 22 in Lawrence.

Ole Miss lost three of last five games after 6-0 start; they're 6-0 outside top 100, with five of six wins by 9+ points. Western Kentucky is 7-0 at home with upset over Southern Miss; Hilltoppers are turning ball over 22.5% of time, making just 30.8% from arc. WKU forces turnovers 21% of time- they're 8-4 overall, with all four losses by ten or more points.

Louisiana Tech is 10-3, 0-3 vs top 100 teams, with losses by 13-9-15 points, including 70-55 loss to Oklahoma State. San Francisco rallied from down 35-27 at half to win WCC opener in OT at Portland Saturday; Dons are 3-15 in last 18 series games, losing ten in row here, last three by 17-11-14 points. Gonzaga's big guy Dower sat out Saturday's 74-60 win over Santa Clara, game they led by hoop with 10:00 left. Saint Louis won its last five games, is 11-2, with true road wins by 24-9-2 points; Billikens are experienced but their PG shoots 58% from foul line, making end-game situations little dicey. Vanderbilt won last three games, two by a hoop here; they turn ball over 20.4% of time, make only 62.2% of FTs. SLU is forcing turnovers 22.7% of time, #19 in US.

Santa Clara swept Portland by 24-12 points LY, after losing eight of ten series games before that; Broncos lost five of last six visits here, losing by 6-1-13-10-10 points. Pilots blew 8-point halftime lead, lost by 6 in OT Saturday despite making 10-20 from arc; USF shot 69.2% inside arc vs Portland. Santa Clara is 1-5 on road, with all five losses by 11+ pts.

San Diego won its last three games with Loyola Marymount, winning its last two visits here by total of four points; Toreros lost last two away games overall, by 7-11 points- they've lost four of last five D-I games. LMU made 8-17 from arc, was +6 in turnovers in upset win over BYU Saturday; Lions had been shotting under 28% from arc before Saturday.

BYU won its four WCC games vs Pepperdine by average of 19 points, but wins here were by 13-2 points; Cougars got upset in WCC opener at LMU, are 1-4 on road- their only road win was 112-103 at Stanford in ESPN Marathon game seven weeks ago. St Mary's is without coach Bennett here, as he begins 5-game ban from NCAA; Gaels went 0-3 on Hawai'i trip after starting 9-0; all three o fits losses are by 7 or less points. St Mary's lost by 10 Pacific on neutral floor LY, before Tigers joined WCC; Pacific hasn't played in nine days since splitting pair in Vegas; they're 1-2 vs top 100 teams, with 10-pt win at Utah State an attention grabber.

Fordham beat Siena last two years by 6-15 points; Rams won five of seven vs teams outside top 200, losing to Sacred Heart/Monmouth by 12-9 points. Saints turn ball over 21.4% of time, make just 30.7% from arc- they beat St Bonaventure, Hofstra in last two home games, after losing home opener to Albany. Fordham bench played total of only 36 minutes in 94-86 home loss to Harvard Saturday.

Jacksonville State won last three games with UT-Martin by 11-31-10 points, winning 77-46 in Skyhawks' last visit here. JSU is 4-9 vs D-I teams, with best win by 11 over #281 Coppin State on a neutral floor. Armed Forces Bowl, Fort Worth 12/30
Underdog won this game SU last four years; service academies are 2-3 in this game the last six years, C-USA teams are 2-6 since '04. Both teams want to run ball here; Middle Tennessee won its last five games after 3-4 start; they scored on last play to beat Marshall 51-49 that turned season around- they won last three games by combined score of 138-38, while running ball for 274.4 ypg. Navy runs option; they scored 47.3 ppg in winning last three games- their last three road games were all decided by 4 or less points or in OT. Middies lost four of last five bowls, allowing 36.8 ppg; This is first bowl since '10 for Blue Raiders, who are 1-2 in its bowls, allowing 31+ points in all three. Navy is 3-2 vs spread as a fave this season; they gave up 42.5 ppg in last four road games. MTSU is 2-3 as an underdog this year- they haven't lost since October 12th.

Music City Bowl Nashville, 12/30
Can Ole Miss stop Georgia Tech's option game? You'd think with extra prep time, teams would defend it better- Tech is 1-4 in last five bowls, scoring 14.4 ppg- they played in Sun Bowl last two years, will be glad to be somewhere new this year. Ole Miss won last three bowls and eight of its last nine, scoring an average of 38.3 ppg in last three; their last bowl loss was '03 Cotton Bowl when Eli Manning was their QB. Rebels lost last two regular season games, scoring 10 points in each- they're 3-4 as a favorite this year, 2-3 SU on road, losing last three away games. Georgia Tech scored 43.7 ppg in last three games, but blew 20-point lead in last game, losing 41-34 to rival Georgia. SEC teams are 5-2 in this bowl last seven years; favorites covered three of last four, after dog had covered five in row. Nashville is SEC (Vandy) country; Rebels will have crowd advantage. Tech threw 24+ passes in two of its last three games.

Alamo Bowl San Antonio, 12/30
Lot of emotion here: Mack Brown's last game as head coach after his 16 years at Texas, while Oregon's longtime defensive aide Aliotti is retiring after 38 years in coaching, so Oregon's defense will be pumped. Texas is 8-4, allowing 30+ points in all four losses and two wins; they're 4-1 in last five bowls, but they won this game LY, don't like teams returning to bowl they won year before, even if Longhorns will be crowd favorite in Alamo. This is first time in five years Ducks aren't playing top 10 team in a bowl; also first bowl for coach Helfrich; Oregon allowed 219+ yards on ground in four of last five games- teams that beat them held Ducks to 16-20 points. Texas fired its DC after second game; they won seven of last nine games, but allowed 30+ points in three of last four games, split four games as a dog this year, beating Oklahoma as 12-point underdog on neutral field. Oregon failed to cover last four games, all as double digit favorite. Some Ducks might not be thrilled about San Antonio site. Big X teams won this bowl game ths last five years.

Texas Tech was 7-0 when it won 37-27 at West Virginia Oct 19, then it lost last five games, giving up average of 48.6 ppg; they're 1-3 vs spread as an underdog this year.Arizona State had 7-game win streak snapped in 38-14 loss to Stanford in Pac0-12 title game. The Armed Forces Bowl features the Naval Academy going up against Middle Tennessee. Middle Tennessee really came together in the second half of the season as the offense caught fire and went on to average 42.6 points per game in their last five games - all wins. Navy closed the season with four straight wins, and there is no doubt what they are going to do here. They are going to is run the triple option on almost every down. Middle Tennessee does not see that offense, but has had ample time to prepare for it here. Last year they went to Georgia Tech and faced a similar offense, beating Tech 49-28. They held the Yellow Jackets to 7 points in the second half, and overall Georgia Tech managed just 238 yards on 53 carries at 4.5 yards per carry. That game will serve as a solid effort against the similar Navy offense. Navy often sneaks up on teams with the triple option, but the Bowl season gives opposing coaches several weeks to prepare for it. As a result, Navy has been crushed in their last two Bowl games. They are just 4-9 ATS following a 20+ point win, and Middle Tennessee has the offense to go toe-to-toe with Navy here. Under head coach Rick Stockstill, MTSU is 29-18 ATS following a win. Mid Tennessee State over Navy by 5
Navy rides into Fort Worth in excellent form, having won four straight after nearly
upsetting Notre Dame. In these five games, Navy’s dynamic quarterback Keenan
Reynolds scored 18 touchdowns and added four more scores through the air. The
Midshipmen are always well-disciplined and this year was a prime example. No team
committed fewer turnovers or was assessed fewer penalties. Nonetheless, we favor
Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders won eight games for the second straight season
and closed with a flourish, out-scoring their last three opponents by a combined 138-
38. In those three games, MTSU averaged 267 rushing yards despite little help from
leading rusher Jordan Parker, who was dealing with a hip injury. (Parker gained 85
yards on only seven carries in the finale.) Navy showed poorly in their last two bowl
games. Pushing the Army-Navy game back to the second Saturday in December – the
practice began in 2009 – apparently did Navy no favors. It appears relevant that
Middle Tennessee was exposed to the triple-option when they locked horns with
Georgia Tech last year. In one of the biggest upsets of the season, the Blue Raiders pre-
vailed 49-28. MID TENNESSEE STATE 35-30.

(Nashville, TN)
Mississippi over Georgia Tech by 6
The Rebels opened the season in Nashville and will close it there, albeit at a different
venue. About that opener: It was a see-saw thriller that ended in favor of Ole Miss
when Jeff Scott reeled off a 75-yard TD run. Scott subsequently missed four games,
including the Egg Bowl, with a leg injury and was conspicuous by his absence. He has
been cleared to return. Georgia Tech finished 7-5 and, akin to Ole Miss, ended the
season with an overtime loss to their in-state rival. The Yellow Jackets played two
lower-division teams and were 3-6-1 ATS, but turned heads with a 56-0 demolition
of Syracuse. It helps to have extra time to prepare for an unorthodox offense. That
may explain Tech’s weak bowl ledger under Paul Johnson: 1-4 SU/ATS with the lone
victory coming last year in the Sun Bowl vs. disinterested Southern Cal. Ole Miss DC
Dave Wommack knows a thing or two about defending the triple-option. He served
in the same capacity for two seasons under Johnson at Georgia Tech. Mississippi has
injury issues in the offensive line and the secondary, but will sell more tickets and rep-
resents the stronger league. We lean to the Rebels. MISSISSIPPI 27-21

ALAMO BOWL(San Antonio, TX)
Oregon over Texas by 10
Oregon advanced to #2 in the AP poll after shellacking UCLA. Then things unrav-
eled. The Ducks lost two late-season games and were life-and-death to defeat Oregon
State, a 24-point underdog. Marcus Mariota was less than 100 percent during this
stretch, his mobility inhibited by a MCL strain. Mariota was pick-free through the
first 10 games and was then intercepted twice in each of his last two starts. The OU
defense, while nothing special, put up numbers comparable to last year despite the
departure of stalwarts Dion Jordan and Kiko Alonso. Texas fashioned a 6-game win-
ning streak during the middle of the season but couldn’t sustain the momentum. The
Longhorns were hurt by injuries. QB David Ash never returned after suffering a sec-
ond concussion in Game Four. His replacement, Case McCoy, was choppy. Prized
rookie Tyrone Swoopes, the star of the spring game, was taking reps with the first team
in bowl practices, an intriguing development. Mack Brown doesn’t seem like the sort
of coach to inspire a “win one for the Gipper” spirit, but his players have been very
vocal about the importance of sending him off on a winning note. We’re tempted to
take the points. OREGON 31-21

HOLIDAY BOWL (San Diego, CA)
Arizonal State over Texas Tech by 26Texas Tech’s fans never warmed to Tommy Tuberville. They cheered when Kliff
Kingsbury was hired. But the bloom is off the rose. Tuberville’s last two teams crum-
pled after promising starts, hamstrung by a flimsy defense, and nothing has changed.
Kingsbury’s Raiders opened 7-0 S/ATS and then did a complete U-turn. Injuries
forced TT to open the season with walk-on Baker Mayfield under center. He missed
four games with a sore knee, yielding his post to fellow freshman Davis Webb, and
would eventually quit the team. Michael Brewer, tops on the depth chart heading into
fall camp, reportedly starts today. Arizona State finished 10-3, losing to Notre Dame
and Stanford twice. The highlights of the season were victories over USC (62-21),
Washington (53-34), and arch-rival Arizona (58-21). Graham has been on the side-
line for four bowl games, three at Tulsa and one here. His teams were lights out in
those games, defeating Bowling Green, Ball State, Hawaii, and Navy by an average
score of 58-21. Graham can coach like blazes; the jury is still out on Kingsbury. ARI-

This bowl game is a story of two teams that both struggled to finish out the regular season. Ole Miss started the season 3-0, highlighted by an early-season win over Texas. Georgia Tech also started the year 3-0, highlighted by a convincing 38-14 win over Duke. Towards the end of the season, however, it seems like Paul Johnson had lost his team and Tech wasn't playing the string out well. Obviously, Tech wants to run the ball and the Ole Miss defense hasn't been particularly good at stopping the pass. This ganme is a clear contrast in styles, but we are going to lean towards the SEC team in this spot. NC State is probably not in a good mood after losing to Missouri by a few points in their last contest. This is a team that hash bounced-back well this year after a loss that includes losing at Cincinnati by 9 points to beating Campbell at home by 15 and losing to NC Central at home to bounce-back and beat Florida Gulf Coats by 20 in their next contest. Such is the case here as NC State faces NC Greensboro after the tough loss against Missouri and with UNC Greensboro winning a shocking game at Virginia Tech, this is likely a let down spot for Greensboro as they face the big brother in state. Greensboro is outside the top 250 in turnover margin and though they have had some quality contests this year, note that when they have faced teams with high potent offense they have struggled. For example, this team lost by 31 to North Carolina on the road (which is probably not lost on NC State the margin of that contest) and lost b 37 to Louisiana Tech (on neutral footing) which is roughly the same power ranking of NC State. I have this contest at 14.5 here so with NC State on the bounce-back, having the ability to 80+ points, against a team outside the top 275 with not being in a good mood and that team coming off a big win, don't be surprised to see NC State likely do well here today. The Spartans of Greensboro are 3-10 ATS following an ATS win of late and 2-5-1 ATS following a straight up win.

Good opportunity to take the Over here. It makes sense for multiple reasons 1 of which is that Charlotte and Utah played in a defensive struggle earlier this year going 88-85 with Utah winning on the road and the game going well under the 189 line. This contest is different as Charlotte will likely be an active underdog and push this game over the posted total. For whatever reason, Charlotte scores more points on the road of late including 116 at Detroit, 94 against Indiana (tough to do against a defensive Indiana team) and even the Atlanta game was 202 in regular before going to 234 in overtime. With Utah consistently scoring more points at home, coming off a tough game against the Clippers scoring just 90 points against a defensive team in the Clippers and generally scoring more at home, look for this game to likely go over the posted total this evening. Normally the second game between two teams takes on the opposite tone to the first game both ATS wise as well as total wise. I believe Charlotte likely wins this game Outright but more importantly, I believe this game likely goes over the posted total as the Over is 4-0 in the Bobcats last 4 road games, the Over is 5-1 when the Bobcats face a team with a losing home record and the Over is 7-3 for the Jazz when they face a team with a straight up losing record as well.

You would have to think that Washington is tired of losing to Ottawa. It's surprising but Washington has lost to Ottawa the last 5 times they have played. This includes losing 6-4 at Washington earlier this year as -126 favorites. This is a big revenge game for Washington and I think they finally step-up today. Note that this team does not typically lose back to back games and come off a 1-2 loss to Buffalo as -127 chalk in extra time on the road. They will likely be irritated going into Ottawa today who comes off a big win against Boston (a home and home revenge situation) winning 4-3 as small +115 underdogs. It seems every time this team has a big win, they have a let down in their next game. For example, they beat Pittsburgh at home 5-0 as +109 underdogs, only to lose to Boston in their next game 0-5 on the road as +172 underdogs only to beat Boston back at home with revenge 4-3 as small underdogs. ABOUT KANSAS (8-3): Coach Bill Self gave his team four days off after the Georgetown win, and the break came at a good time for players such as freshman guard Wayne Selden, who has cooled since scoring 15 points against Duke on Nov. 12. “Since the Duke game, I think he’s been up and down,” Self told KUSports.com. “His health hasn’t been great, but it’s not anything structurally that’s bothering him. He just probably hasn’t felt 100 percent much in the last month or so.” Freshman guard Andrew Wiggins is averaging 15.5 points, but he’s missed 15 of his last 21 shots over the last two games.
