I think they will eventually just allow people to opt in or out, like a competing marketplace. In which case only sickly people will opt in and the coverage will be outrageous. So only poor people will partake with the government subsidies. Like I said before, I would love for it to work, because it is necessary IMO, but you can't just straight up force some people to pay for other people like that, no one will go along with that. I will do it if I can write off all my health insurance as charity.

I am pretty sure they quietly "postponed" that too. I don't think it takes effect until 2015. But I don't really think it will have an impact, most businesses with over 50 employees offer health insurance anyway. I would bet it is a pretty small percentage of businesses that size that don't already offer it.

Anyone see the Counselor yet? I dont think I have been more dissapointed in a movie. Im a huge Fassbender fan, love his work as well as most of the rest of the cast. Fassbender was great in the movie, but the story was just so fuckin dumb to me. There was just too much conversation going on that had nothing to do with the plot, I was getting bored halfway through it.

I also live-bet a prop that I thought was an insane steal at the time: at the end of the first half, that Marshawn Lynch would rush for 9.5 more yards than the Broncos (-130), because of course the Seahawks would be rushing and the Broncos would be passing to catch up. It didn't occur to me that the game would become such a blowout that the Seahawks would bench Lynch and the Broncos would basically just give up and run the ball. That guy was a great actor, but he was also in several movies that, despite being very well reviewed, I absolutely hated. Owning Mahoney was one of these. Synecdoche, NY and The Talented Mr. Ripley were two others. I really think it all started when he found out how much money I won during football. Through the whole run I was telling him it was time to make a run and make some serious money betting. The whole time he told me it was a bad idea and that we should just stick to grinding out profits. I was seriously just waiting for him to say "sure, lets do it!" so we could do it together.
The whole time he kept saying I was a "pussy" and that I don't even bet anymore .Once he realized he was wrong and he could have won a lot of money I think he was pissed. I think the whole job thing was just the icing on the cake

Truth is that since he left I've been doing nothing but win on MMA. I won 3400 on UFC 168, 500 on the Rockhold event, 300 on UFC on Fox 10, and 90 bucks last weekend.
When X was here all we did was argue about fights. Every single fight I liked he had ten reasons not to like it or to bet the other side. That would usually make me end up betting the fights that lost and passing on the ones that won.


I'm not blaming him for my losing. I think we just look at fights differently so we would have never agreed on much. Me and poopoo seem to be more on the same page about looking at fights. Sure, we disagree about certain fights but its not a all out war like it use to be with me and X when we didnt agree. If me and poopoo agree on a fight, I'll probably put a big play down on it. If we disagree, I'll probably only go small on it, but we never argue about the fights--its all about winning money.

I'd like X to come back and I cant believe after everything he just left for good. I've been told to kill myself a couple times,got into arguments with several people, and just left for a few days to blow off steam. I don't know. I really can't explain after 4 or 5 years why you'd just disappear and never come back over something so stupid.

It wouldn't even bother me if he came back and called us all assholes and then just buried the hatchet . There's nothing I can do; I apologized to him about the whole situation just a week after he left

This, I can understand. You have a methodology, you saw signs indicating an opportunity based on line movement. To me, that's different than believing that you have a beat on how the game will roll out.

Its a statistical fact that the line only comes into account in 20% of all NFL games. The rest of the time, just picking the winner of the game wins you your bet. By those standards, it didn't matter how sharp the line( point spread) was on this game. If you can pick who is going to win the game, you'll win 80% of your wagers.

Did I predict a Seattle blowout, no, but I also didn't think the points would matter and that's why I took the ML rather than the points. In all honesty, I expected Seattle to win by 7-10 points.

I kind of agree with you. I used to place bet on hockey as here in Canada, hockey is #1 sport. The thign with hockey if that the #1 team in the league could play a game agains'nt the worst team in the league, and the best team will lose 5-0. It happens regularly pretty much every night. There is no sure thing in hockey. As in Football, usually, if Denver are playing jacksonville, there is no way that Jacksonville will win 40-0. usually (not always), the best team wins.
Same thing could be said in soccer ..... A soccer game can oftenly end 1-0 ... so let's say a really bad team are just lucky to score one goal from far away agains't the best team in the league, the game could easily end this way.
IMO footbal is probably the easiest team sport to bet and make money on

The Super Bowl is such a huge betting event, even for people who don't generally bet on sports, that dumb money overwhelms the smart money on a regular basis. For that reason, it is home to some of the worst lines you will ever see in sports. One example sticks out in my mind: the Super Bowl in the late 90's that was Denver vs. Green Bay. Denver was a statistically superior team but was something like a 12 point underdog, probably because the public was going off the fact that Denver had been a wild card team and the NFC had at that point won the Super Bowl about 231 times in a row. There was also a pretty bad line the last time Manning was in the SB, where the Saints, who really should have been favored, but weren't, did indeed win. I think then, as this year, the public was going off the common misconception that a team is its quarterback.

I bet some of the games in that thread, but not all. I was going by lopsided money, not public percentages. I remember one game I posted that you and chico said was almost a 50/50 split but the money was very lopsided towards one team.They are both still against the public, just a different ways. I like Leo ok, I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of his acting or anything. I don't see a movie just because he is in it, but I have seen almost all his movies. He does a pretty good job, and he generally shuts the fuck up outside of his movies which helps me see him as a character more I think (as opposed to someone like Sean Penn, who I think used to be a good actor, but his terrible real life personality ruins anything I see with him in it now). I think more than anything, he picks good movies. He has been in a ton of good stuff. Inception and The Departed are both super awesome flicks IMO. I think I saw the Aviator, but it didn't really stay with me, probably because I don't really like Biopics that much.

You are just missing information in there. You would need the amount of cases per lawyer in front of each judge IMO to get the correct correlation. Then you could get a correct analysis

well I do have that information, just didn't want to post it all unless it was needed. Assume that the judges are 45%, 47%, 50%, 52%, and 55%. Further assume each lawyer has the same number of cases with each judge (so at 200 cases a piece, each lawyer has 40 cases with each judge).

It's hard to say. Here's the quick version:

given that:

1) You asked asked about the lawyers and not the judges
2) The judges are fairly clustered; 45-55 is not a huge range
3) You said each lawyer had the same number of cases with each judge

We can basically ignore the judges part of the whole thing, and reduce the problem to the lawyer percentage alone, or something like:

We have three coins of unknown weighting; we flip each 200 times, and they end up heads 54, 56, and 61 percent of the time respectively. What can we say about the weighting of the coins?

The most relevant thing I can tell you is that the margin of error (with 95% probability) for a sample size of 200 is given by "0.95 / sqrt(200)", or about 7%, which just happens to be exactly the span between the two extremes.

(So we're 95% certain that the true weighting of the first coin is between 47 and 61 percent, and we're independently 95% certain that the true weighting of the last coin is between 54 and 68 percent.) So it's fairly likely that the last coin/lawyer is actually better than the first one, harder to have a strong opinion between the first two.

I understand your rationale Svino but only if you are stricly looking to know if a lawyer is better than the other ones. I would still take into consideration the amount of Cases won in front of each judges .... simply for the reporting purposes. It is totally possible that the lawyer with the 54% rate won 95% of his cases in front of judge 1 but but only won 10% of his cases in front of judge #2.
Doing so, it is possible that the lawyer with the lowest cases won overall might have better odds to win a case (as opposed to the other 2 lawyers with beter overall stats) if it's in front 1 of the 2 judge in particular.
It is possible that there is no correlation whatsowever in the stats mentionned earlier about the judge to judge stats, but it might be interested to take a look at it from my point of view.

Yeah, this could definitely make a difference. But controlling for another factor like that, while doable, is kinda tricky. Also, you'd have to make certain assumptions about how the two factors interact, like that lawyers and judges can be modeled with a single parameter for persuasiveness/leniency and they make a linear contribution to the probability of success. It could be super hard to model if there are quirks about specific lawyers matching up better or worse with different judges (like if one lawyer was primarily a jiu-jitsu guy, but one judge has really good take-down defense).
