WINNING POINTS

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Wisconsin-Milwaukee* over Detroit by 7
Host UW-M is a surprising 11-6-1 ATS heading into the week; Detroit, a less-thanmiddling
7-10 ATS. Milwaukee has double-revenge for 15- and 8-point losses last season.
None of Detroit’s guards averages more than 8.8 ppg. That’s probably not good.
Last year, they had a guard averaging 18 ppg, and another guard averaging 14 ppg.
That was good.
WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE, 79-72.

WINNING POINTS

PRO BASKETBALL

*Orlando over Los Angeles Lakers by 3
This marks the Lakers' sixth of seven consecutive road contests. The Lakers were 4-5
ATS when playing in the second of back-to-back games. The Magic are hard to get
behind with Nikola Vucevic (check status) out of the lineup.
ORLANDO 105-102.

Toronto over *Philadelphia by 5
Michael Carter-Williams is on pace to become the only rookie besides Magic Johnson
to average 17 points, seven assists and five rebounds a game. However, the 76ers are
6-12 ATS at home, commit the most turnovers of any team and rank last in defense.
TORONTO 109-104.

***BEST BET
*Atlanta over San Antonio by 4
The Spurs are caught in a sandwich spot of marquee matchups having just hosted the
Thunder and playing at Miami in their next game. The Hawks don't have San
Antonio's stars, but have proven dangerous in Atlanta going 13-6 ATS through this
past Sunday.
ATLANTA 97-93.

*Cleveland over Milwaukee by 9
Cleveland's scoring has been way up since acquiring Luol Deng. The Bucks took the
Cavaliers to overtime when they last visited on Dec. 20 losing 114-111. But are 3-5
ATS away from home since then through last Sunday suffering blowout losses to the
Suns, Thunder and Raptors during this span.
CLEVELAND 109-100.

Dallas over *Brooklyn by 3
Dallas is playing in its third of three consecutive road games. The Mavericks, though,
opened their current road trip 38-15 ATS in their past 53 away matchups. The Nets
ranked last in 3-point defense and have been without their best player, Deron
Williams (check status).
DALLAS 106-103.

Oklahoma City over *Boston by 6
The Celts were buried by Oklahoma City, 119-96, less than three weeks ago. But the
Thunder were 6-6 ATS in their first 12 games since Russell Westbrook was injured
and have only two road covers during this span.
OKLAHOMA CITY 107-101.

***BEST BET
Charlotte at *New York by 7
Charlotte rolled past the Knicks, 108-98, when the Bobcats hosted New York 10 days
ago ending New York's five-game winning streak. The Knicks couldn't stop Al
Jefferson, who scored a season-high 35 points, despite having Tyson Chandler back in
the lineup. It was the fifth time in the last six meetings Charlotte has covered against
the Knicks. The Bobcats are a better team with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist back in the
rotation, although they could be missing Kemba Walker (check status).
CHARLOTTE 99-92.

*Detroit over New Orleans by 6
New Orleans was averaging eight fewer points per game since Ryan Anderson was lost
with a herniated disc. Brandon Jennings can go to town with Jrue Holiday out, too.
The Pelicans were 7-12-1 ATS in its first 20 road games.
DETROIT 108-102.

***BEST BET
Memphis over *Houston by 6
After initially struggling following Marc Gasol's injury, the Grizzlies have turned
things around. Mike Conley is having a career season, Zach Randolph still is a double-
double machine and Memphis entered the mid-point of the month ranked sixth
defensively. The Grizzlies were 7-2 ATS through last Sunday and have been idle since
Monday.
MEMPHIS 102-96.

*Chicago over Los Angeles Clippers by 1
The Clips crushed the Bulls, 121-82, back in November when Chicago was struggling.
Now the Bulls are playing better defense and will be catching LA playing in
their fifth road game in eight days and minus Chris Paul.
CHICAGO 97-96.

*Phoenix over Washington by 2
The Suns have been struggling without Eric Bledsoe, who ranked second on the team
in scoring and assists . The Wizards haven't been on the road in 11 days. They have
covered eight of their last 10 away matchups.
PHOENIX 104-102.

Indiana over *Sacramento by 7
The teams met just 10 days ago in Indiana where the Pacers halted the Kings' threegame winning streak with a 116-92 victory. This is Sacramento's first game back from a six-game, nine-day road trip that finished Wednesday night.
INDIANA 100-93.

*Golden State over Minnesota by 7
While Minnesota ranked 29th in defensive field goal percentage, the Warriors have
tightened their defense ranking in the top 10 in fewest points per game and defensive
field goal percentage. The Warriors were 8-4 ATS when hosting a foe with a losing
road mark.
GOLDEN STATE 119-112.

Four NCAAB mid-major moneymakers

Mid-major money. Small conference cash. Every season in college basketball there are small schools that provide value ATS that are overlooked to bettors. Whether it be a lack of television coverage, or playing in a small conference with a lack of marquee names, these teams might not be thought of as quality bets despite churning cover after cover.

Today we look at four schools that have been killing it ATS this season and are worth a look for those interested in diversifying what conferences they bet on.

Wichita State (Missouri Valley Conference, 12-3-1 ATS)

Wichita State is actually one of the most consistent mid-majors in terms of success at the NCAA tournament and are currently an undefeated 19-0. The Shockers are also a very impressive 12-3-1 ATS. Led by Cleanthony Early (15.5 PPG) and a balanced group of returning players, the Shockers could very well finish the regular season undefeated. If spreads get inflated and teams start getting more and more motivated to end their undefeated streak we could see more ATS losses which is a concern. For now, the Shockers are the giants of the mid-majors on the court and against the spread.

New Mexico State (WAC, 7-2 ATS)

New Mexico State, most known for having 7'5" center Sim Bhullar and Johannesburg-born Tshilidzi Nephawe down low, have no problems using their size to dominate opponents in the WAC. With their only ATS loss in their last ten meetings being against the Arizona Wildcats, it is no secret that the Aggies' size creates value when they are facing smaller opponents. With Nephawe averaging 7.4 rebounds and Bhullar averaging 3.4 blocks per game, the Aggies are simply dominant in the post most nights. Add in Daniel Mullings 16.2 PPG and the Aggies have more than enough on the perimeter to support the interior defense and rebounding of their Twin Towers.

Air Force (Mountain West, 9-3 ATS)

Air Force has been a top underdog in the Mountain West in the opening month of conference play, covering four-straight spreads of 7.5 or more recently. Air Force has also covered while favored, covering as 9-point favorites against San Jose State. While the team is a pretty average 9-8 SU and is fairly pedestrian when it comes to statistics, they appear to stay in games and have three players averaging points in the double digits including scoring leader Tre Coggins who is averaging a steady 17.5 PPG. That "Big Three" is keeping them in games, and while handicappers keep them as underdogs there is value.

UTEP (C-USA, 10-3 ATS)

A betting scandal hasn't slowed down the Miners from being solid both in the C-USA and ATS. After stumbling in a loss to Charlotte and failing to cover against Western Illinois in the fallout of the scandal, UTEP has won and covered four of the last five. Holding teams to a 37.8 percent from the field and 28.7 percent shooting behind the arc, the Miners' defense has kept them in the C-USA race and as the best ATS team in the conference.

Game: Memphis at Houston (8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: Memphis +6 (-105) at 5Dimes

The Memphis Grizzlies have put their backs to the wall with a horrible start, but they have finally started to play more like the team we saw late last season. Memphis has used a 5-1 run to get to .500, and they have actually played better on the road, than at home where they are 9-7 this season. They have double-revenge against Houston, who they lost to by 7 and 8 points this season, but are playing at a much higher level right now, and are 5-0 ATS in their last five off a loss. This is the first of a home-and-home vs. Houston, and the Rockets have San Antonio after that, so they may find themselves complacent here. Take the points on Memphis.

San Antonio Spurs vs. Atlanta Hawks

The San Antonio Spurs (32-10, 21-21 ATS) will have to try and shake off yet
another home loss to one of the teams that they are battling for the top
seed in the West as they venture east to visit the Atlanta Hawks (22-19, 22-19
ATS) at Philips Arena Friday at 7:35 ET. Entering play on Thursday, the
Spurs were the second seeds in the Western Conference, one-half game behind the
Thunder and one game ahead of the third-seeded Trail Blazers. The Haws
meanwhile were the third seeds in the considerably weaker Eastern Conference,
although no threat to the top two trailing the top seeds from Indiana by 11
games and Miami by 7.

The Spurs may be 32-10, but while they have been beating up on the
lightweights of the league, they have had uncharacteristic difficulty with the
better teams. In fact, they lost here at home to the Thunder on Wednesday and to
the Blazers last Friday, as they were unable to get some separation from
those teams in two golden chances in their own building, thus now actually
falling behind Oklahoma City by virtue of Wednesday's loss. That loss also
leaves the Spurs at 7-9 this season vs. teams currently ranked in the Sagarin Top
10, while they are 25-1 against the rest of the league losing only to the
Knicks! Well, the Hawks are 14th on Sagarin, which bodes well for the Spurs.
What does not bode well is the recent play of the San Antonio defense, which
is allowing 100.4 points per game on 46.4 percent shooting over the last
five games. That is not encouraging while visiting an Atlanta team averaging
105.4 points on 47.0 percent shooting in that same five-game span. The Spurs
have been just fine offensively though, ranking sixth in the NBA this season
with their 104.8 points per game overall.

And the Hawks may not offer much resistance with a defense ranked 18th in
points against at 101.3 points per game overall and that has seen that
average rise to a distressing 107.6 points the last five games. The Hawks have
managed to win their last two games though despite that shoddy defense, first
upsetting the defending champion Heat here at home 121-114 in a game they
incredibly lead 71-70 at halftime for the highest scoring first half in the NBA
this season, and then following that up with a 112-109 road win at Orlando.
That brings the 'over' to 25-16-1 in all Atlanta games this season, which
is not surprising given the Hawks' offensive and defensive numbers.
Furthermore these teams went 'over' the first time they met this season in San
Antonio, and the San Antonio defense took a hit on Wednesday when Kawhi Leonard,
one of the team's best perimeter defenders, was lost for at least one month
with a fractured hand. The Spurs could feel that loss here vs. an Atlanta
club ranked eighth in the NBA in overall field goal percentage at 46.1 percent.

The 'over' is 18-7-1 in the Spurs' last 26 games following an ATS loss,
8-2-1 in their last 11 games vs. the Eastern Conference and 5-1 in their last
six road games. The 'over' is also 4-0 in the Hawks' last four games overall,
12-2 in their last 14 games after allowing 100 points or more in their
previous game and 8-2 in their last 10 games following a straight up win.

3* No Doubt Rout on Memphis Grizzlies +

The Memphis Grizzlies had a season's best win streak snapped in a three point loss against New Orleans in their last outing. I like the Grizzlies chance to get things back on track in this home-and-home series with the Houston Rockets. Houston is facing a well rested Memphis team that is playing just their second game in the past seven days. This will be the Rocket's fourth game during that seven-day stretch. Houston is playing through a lot of injuries right now, and I expect them to struggle with this tough Memphis defense. The Grizzlies are surrendering a mere 94.6 points per game on the road this season. Over their last five games the Grizzlies have held opponents to just 90 points per game. The Rockets on the other hand have a soft defense, and I think that is what will end up costing them in this matchup. They are allowing 103.8 points per game over their last five games. Memphis is 43-28 ATS when playing against a team with a winning record, and they are 31-18 ATS against good shooting teams making over 46 percent of their shots. A big reason for their success against good teams goes back to their outstanding defensive play. The Grizzlies are not getting enough credit from the oddsmakers in this game. This matchup presents a perfect opportunity for Memphis to pull off an upset, so I like the Grizzlies chances of at least keeping this game within five or less points.

3* Oddsmakers Error on Washington Wizards +

The oddsmakers may have favored the wrong team in this matchup. Washington has won four of its last six games, with their two losses coming by small single-digit margins. The offense is rolling right now, averaging 105.2 points per game over their last five games. They should score at-will against a Suns defense that has surrendered 105 points per game over their last five games. The Suns are coming off a big win over the Pacers, and I have them playing in a letdown situation in today's matchup with the Wizards. Phoenix has shot over 50 percent in their last two games, and that is a feat that is simply unsustainable. They have shot over 50 percent just three times in their last 19 games while shooting under 45 percent in nine of those games. The Suns are 45-74 ATS after two straight wins by 10 or more points. You should play on road teams like Washington when they average 98 to 102 points per game, and they are coming off a loss by six points or less and are facing a poor defense that is surrendering 98 to 102 points per game. This system is 45-19 (70%) ATS over the last five seasons.

Free Pick on Brooklyn Nets -

The Nets have really turned their season around since the start of the New Year. Brooklyn has won eight of its last nine games both straight up and against the spread. A big reason for Brooklyn's recent success has been its outstanding play on the defensive end of the court. Over their last five games the Nets have held opponents to a mere 94.2 points per game. They Mavericks on the other hand have allowed 110.6 points per game over their last five games. The Net's defense has really stepped up recently, and so has the offense. They are averaging 103 points per game over their last five games. They have covered the spread in six of their last seven games when being listed as a favorite by the oddsmakers. Brooklyn is facing a Mavericks team that has lost three of their last five games. The Nets are a streaky team, and have a 24-12 ATS record after two or more consecutive wins. Dallas is playing its third consecutive road game and their fourth game in the past seven days. With home court advantage the Nets should be able to cover such a small number in this game.

5* NBA Non-Conference Total of the Month on Wizards/Suns OVER

This total is set far too low given how well these teams have been playing on offense recently. Over their last five games the Wizards are averaging 105.2 points per game. The Suns have also been on a scoring binge averaging 113 points per game over their last five games. These teams have an 11-3 record in favor of the over in their last 14 games combined. Both offenses are playing great right now, but both of these defenses have been horrible. Washington has surrendered 101.2 points per game over their last five games, and I think that number will only get worse against a high scoring team like the Suns. Phoenix has had a notoriously bad defense all season, but somehow they have managed to play worse than average recently allowing 105 points per game over their last five games. The over is 13-2 in the Suns last 15 home games against opponents who attempt 18 or more three point shots per game. The over is also 13-5 when the Suns are playing against a team with a losing record this season. You should play the over when the total is 200 points or more and the road team is coming off a loss by three points or less and their opponent has scored 100 points or more in four straight games. The over has a 54-23 (70%) record in this situation

Cash for gold

After losing Kobe Bryant for most of the season this year, the Lakers have tanked in the standings, dropping to 16-27 in games thru January 23.

However, it’s been more like cash for gold for Laker backers in underdog roles this season with L.A. going 21-13-2 ATS when taking points.

That’s a stark comparison to the dismal 21-39 ATS mark the Lakers compiled as underdogs the previous two seasons.

Best role this season for the surfer dudes: 11-1 ATS as dogs in non-conference games.

Stat of the Week

The San Antonio Spurs are 12-1 ATS away in games after facing the Miami Heat. (Tuesday, 1/28).
