Four MLB teams that actually try in Spring Training
By JASON LOGAN

Betting on MLB Spring Training baseball can be a sign that winter has gotten the best of you. Like any preseason, spring ball is a craps shoot. Managers have their own agenda, as do players, so consistency in the Grapefruit and Cactus League schedules is about as hard to come by as a Derek Jeter jersey in Boston.

However, if you can’t help yourself – and god knows some of us can’t – you may want to stick to these four clubs who have excelled in the spring season for the past few years.

Detroit Tigers (61-33 in Spring Training since 2010)

The Tigers have plenty of wrinkles to iron out this spring, what with slugger Prince Fielder being dealt to Texas and manager Jim Leyland hanging up his spikes (He did actually wear spikes for most of his career). Ian Kinsler is a more reliable bat but will need to find his role in the lineup. The pitching staff is also working in some new faces and new skip Brad Ausmus is cooking up chemistry with his team.

Seattle Mariners (54-33 in Spring Training since 2011)

The Mariners got off to a strong start in spring ball last year, with a 22-11 record. Seattle, of course, made the biggest splash this offseason by adding second baseman Robinson Cano. That wasn’t the only move the M’s made on and off the field. They opened their wallet to names like Corey Hart and closer Fernando Rodney, and welcome new manager Lloyd McClendon. This is an aging club so spring ball could be played at half speed for Seattle, with player just hoping to stay healthy for Opening Day.

Kansas City Royals (61-33 in Spring Training since 2011)

The Royals are on the rise and used a strong 2013 tune-up campaign – going 25-7 - to springboard an 86-76 regular season. Kansas City kept its young core mainly intact and added an innings-eater in Jason Vargas, bolstering the rotation. The Royals added a couple of table setters to the top of the order, which should allow big bats like Eric Hosmer, Billy Butler and Alex Gordon to post some big numbers.

San Francisco Giants (80-54 in Spring Training since 2010)

The Giants have cooled off a bit in the spring after dominating the exhibition schedule in 2010 and 2011. However, San Francisco has still won more often than not in Cactus League play. This spring, the Giants have a lot of question marks in the air. Can the starting rotation return to a World Series class? Can the lineup stay healthy enough to support them? And what’s up with Tim Lincecum’s high school freshman mustache?

Friday's NBA Tips
By Kevin Rogers

Grizzlies at Thunder
Memphis: 32-24 SU, 25-30-1 ATS
Oklahoma City: 43-15 SU, 32-26 ATS
Since Russell Westbrook has returned to the Thunder lineup, OKC hasn’t won a game in three tries. All three losses have had a similar theme: a lack of defense. Oklahoma City has allowed at least 103 points in each defeat, while giving up 114 points to Cleveland in Wednesday’s shocking home loss to the Cavs as 15-point favorites. Since the start of February, the Thunder has compiled a dreadful 3-7 ATS record, including a 1-4 ATS mark at Chesapeake Energy Arena in this span.

The Grizzlies have won five of their past six games, including Wednesday’s 108-103 victory over the Lakers. However, Memphis has failed to cover seven consecutive home contests as a favorite, but the Grizzlies are a scorching 9-1 ATS the last 10 games in the underdog role. The lone ATS loss for Memphis in this stretch came at Oklahoma City on February 3 in an 86-77 defeat as eight-point underdogs, but point guard Mike Conley sat out with an ankle injury.

Warriors at Knicks
Golden State: 35-23 SU, 27-28-3 ATS
New York: 21-36 SU, 24-33 ATS
The Warriors continue their six-game road swing in New York following an embarrassing effort on Wednesday. Golden State was blown out at Chicago, 103-83 as 3½-point favorites to snap a four-game winning streak, while cashing the ‘under’ for the fifth consecutive contest. Mark Jackson’s team split a pair of contests against the Knicks last season, including a 54-point effort from Stephen Curry in a 109-105 defeat at Madison Square Garden as 7½-point underdogs.

The Knicks return home with no rest following Thursday’s contest at Miami, as New York owns a 4-8 SU and 6-6 ATS record on the second of a back-to-back. Mike Woodson’s club has struggled in the role of a home underdog, posting a 2-9 ATS record when receiving points at the Garden, with one of those covers coming in Monday’s buzzer-beating loss to Dallas. New York has cashed the ‘over’ in seven of the last 10 home contests, while each of the last four home meetings with Golden State has sailed ‘over’ the total.

Bulls at Mavericks
Chicago: 31-26 SU, 29-28 ATS
Dallas: 36-23 SU, 33-26 ATS
All of the sudden, the Bulls are looking like the third-best team in the Eastern Conference after winning seven of their past eight games. Following a rout of Golden State on Wednesday, the Bulls improved to 8-2 ATS the last 10 contests, while topping the 100-point mark for the third time in four games. The Bulls are playing with revenge on Friday after getting blown out by the Mavericks in December, 105-83, as Dallas put up 61 points in the first half.

The Mavericks are rolling right now, riding a four-game winning streak following Wednesday’s 108-89 home triumph over the Pelicans. The strong defensive effort for Dallas against New Orleans actually ended a five-game 'over' run for the Mavs, as Rick Carlisle's team has won five of their past seven at the American Airlines Arena. Dallas has taken care of Eastern Conference opponents of late, going 7-2 SU and 5-4 ATS, as the last loss to an Eastern team came against Miami in the first game after the All-Star break.

Pelicans at Suns
New Orleans: 23-34 SU, 24-29-4 ATS
Phoenix: 33-24 SU, 36-20-1 ATS
The Pelicans haven’t won a game since the All-Star break, losing each of their last five games, while scoring 93 points or less four times in this stretch. New Orleans will likely be without All-Star center Anthony Davis on Friday night after the former top pick suffered a shoulder injury in Wednesday’s defeat at Dallas. The Pelicans are playing with double-revenge after losing each of the first two meetings with the Suns, including a 101-94 defeat in Phoenix as two-point road favorites on November 10.

The Suns are mired in a three-game skid, which includes a pair of home losses to the Rockets and Wolves. The most recent defeat came at Utah on Wednesday night as a short underdog, while Phoenix played without starting point guard Goran Dragic, who is a game-time decision on Friday with a sprained ankle. Four of the last five games for the Suns have finished ‘under’ the total, but Phoenix has given up at least 109 points in each of its past three contests.

Game of the Day: Blues at Ducks

St. Louis Blues at Anaheim Ducks (-115, 5.5)

After beginning the season nearly unbeatable at home (20-0-2), the Anaheim Ducks have stumbled in five of their last seven games at the Honda Center. The Ducks look to regain their footing and vie for their first season sweep of St. Louis on Friday night when they return from the Olympic break by hosting the Blues. Team Canada representative Ryan Getzlaf collected a goal and an assist in both meetings with St. Louis as Anaheim skated to a 5-2 road win on Dec. 7 and a 3-2 road triumph on Jan. 18.

The victories were the Ducks' fourth and fifth in six outings against the Blues, which is par for the course considering the latter's struggles against the California-based clubs. St. Louis has dropped seven of its last eight meetings versus the Golden State teams. The Blues opened their three-game road trip by being shut out for the first time this season with a 1-0 setback to Vancouver on Wednesday.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSMW (St. Louis), FSPT (Anaheim)

LINE HISTORY: The Ducks opened as -115 home faves. The total opened at 5.5 goals.

POWER RANKINGS: Blues (-203) / Ducks (-185)

INJURY WATCH: Blues - Jordan Leopold (Ques. - Leg). Ducks - Viktor Fasth (Prob. - Lower body), Nick Bonino (Ques. - Wrist), Mark Fistric (Ques. - Lower body)

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "A battle between two of the top teams in the Western Conference. Anaheim has dominated the season series so far winning both previous meetings out scoring the Blues 8-4. The Ducks have been dominate at home so far this season and I see that continuing in this matchup." - Michael Stewart, CarbonSports.

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "The Blues are coming off a tough 1-0 loss in their return to the ice following the Olympic break, so they'll have no shortage of motivation as they make the trip from Vancouver to Anaheim Friday. Both of these teams sent a number of players to Sochi, so we could see a bit of a hangover effect in this one. With goals coming at a premium, you have to give the advantage to the Blues, one of the best defensive teams in the league. Anaheim has had St. Louis' number this season, but that could change Friday night." - Sean Murphy.

ABOUT THE BLUES (39-13-3-3 SU, 25-33 ATS, 27-25 O/U): St. Louis generated little offensive consistency on Wednesday, prompting United States Olympian T.J. Oshie to label the effort as "pretty sluggish." Coach Ken Hitchcock, who served as an assist for Team Canada during the Olympics, noted a decided difference in terms of play by his team in the third period. "I didn't think we had the energy in the third period that we did in the end of the first and the second," Hitchcock said. Perhaps Jaden Schwartz will ignite the Blues as he scored in three of the previous four games heading into the break as well as both contests versus Anaheim this season.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (41-14-1-4 SU, 31-29 ATS, 19-9-0-3 O/U): Getzlaf was on quite the roll prior to the Olympics, scoring four goals in five games to boost his total to a career-high 29 on the season. Fellow Canadian Olympian Corey Perry snapped a three-game scoreless streak with a goal in Anaheim's 5-2 triumph over Nashville on Feb. 8. Swede Jakob Silfverberg settled for silver in Sochi and recorded just one assist in his eight contests leading up to the break.

TRENDS:
* Over is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings.
* Home team is 29-10-1 in the last 40 meetings.
* Blues are 5-16-1 in the last 22 meetings in Anaheim.
* Blues are 1-5 in the last six meetings.

CONSENSUS: Almost 64 percent of the wagers are on the Ducks -115.

Players NBA *10* Friday on Oklahoma City on 28 February
Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NBA Friday 10* (Top Play) on Oklahoma City vs. Memphis @ 8:00 p.m. ET
The Oklahoma City Thunder host the Memphis Grizzlies Friday. “The Bulldog” breaks down his selection on Oklahoma City with his Three-Factor Analysis: 1. The Thunder have stumbled on a three-game losing skid, discounting their odds at home Friday night. Teams as good as OKC don’t stay down for long. 2. Defense has been the big issue during this skid. Oklahoma City ran into a pissed-off Heat team, then couldn’t keep pace with the Clippers run-and-gun. The loss to Cleveland was an avoidable letdown, but Memphis plays a much slower, methodical pace which is a welcome change compared to recent opponents. 3. This is Russell Westbrook’s third game back from a knee injury – coincidently coinciding with the Thunder’s skid. Oklahoma City will have its chemistry issues and rotation figured out by Friday.
Play on Oklahoma City as a 10* Top Selection Friday.
Good luck, Scott.

Players NCAAB *8* Friday on Providence on 28 February
Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NBA Friday 8* (Regular Play) on Providence at Seton Hall @ 7:00 p.m. ET
The Seton Hall Pirates host the Providence Friars Friday. “The Bulldog” breaks down his selection on Providence with his Three-Factor Analysis: 1. Providence is making a late-season push, coming off a road win at Butler and picking up a recent victory over DePaul. The Friars are sitting on the NCAA bubble and can’t afford a bad loss on their resume this close to Selection Sunday. 2. Seton Hall limps into Friday after back-to-back losses. The Pirates have just one win in their last six outings, suffering a major power outage on offense. Seton Hall is scoring only 63.4 points in those five losses. 3. On the other side of the scale, the Friars are firing on all cylinders when it comes to offense. Providence is averaging 83.3 points over its last three games, and has plenty of scoring depth on the roster. It has four players averaging double figures, including leading scorer Bryce Cotton, who’s putting up 21.5 points a night.
Play on Providence as an 8* Regular Selection Friday.
Good luck, Scott.

Nelly's Friday NBA Total Domination - Feb. 28 (1* UNDER GS/NYK)

02/28/14 Nelly's 1* #805/806 'UNDER 201' Golden State Warriors at New York Knicks 7:05 PM CT
The Knicks enter this game in the shadow of a huge Thursday night game in Miami, a big game for the franchise for obvious reasons against the back-to-back champions and a game the team had two off days to prepare for. New York has been showing improved scoring in recent weeks but on the season New York has scored just 98 points per game and now in the second of back-to-back games the Knicks face one of the best defenses in the NBA. Golden State should have no shortage of motivation in this matchup coming off an ugly 20 points loss in Chicago on Wednesday. The margin of defeat could have been even worse as the Warriors hit just 35 percent going up against another elite defense, featuring a 14-point 3rd quarter. Chicago got 24 points at the line to reach triple-digits, just the third team in the last 14 games to reach that mark against the Warriors. Golden State in the #3 team in the NBA in defensive efficiency and the Warriors did a masterful job against the Knicks the last time these teams met, holding New York to just 63 points. The 'under' is 19-11 in Golden State road games and while a west coast team playing on the east coast sounds daunting, Golden State had Thursday off while New York was in Miami for a big primetime game, putting the road team in the better position. Laying points with the Warriors on the road is risky but Golden State should control the pace of this game and leave a fatigued Knicks team struggling on offense. The 'under' has hit in six of the last seven Golden State games and this total is price too high considering these teams scored just 155 points the last time they met.
Nelly's rates our regular basketball selections 1, 2, and 3-stars. It is a long season so please have a money management plan and be conservative and conscientious with your wagers. Thanks for playing with Nelly's Sportsline and best of luck.

The Buffalo Sabres host the San Jose Sharks Friday. “The Bulldog” breaks down his selection on OVER in Buffalo with his Three-Factor Analysis: 1. The Sabres have surrendered eight goals since action picked back up in the NHL, including a 5-4 overtime loss to Boston. On top of that, star goaltender Ryan Miller isn’t focuses on hockey as much as he is about his future. Miller expects to be dealt during the trade deadline – this coming on the heels of his Olympic stint with Team USA in Sochi. 2. The Sharks could be a little slow footed on the defensive end Friday after traveling across the country and playing Philadelphia Thursday. San Jose lit the lamp for seven goals in that win, blowing about the total. 3. The Olympic break allowed San Jose to heal some of its big guns, with Raffi Torres and Logan Couture returning Thursday. The Sharks still managed to averaging 2.9 goals for despite those injuries, so expect a healthy attack to top that output.
Play on OVER in Buffalo as an 8* Regular Selection Friday.
Good luck, Scott.

NCAA Basketball Picks: Friday's Best NCAAB Bets

Friday, February 28, 2014 9:03 AM ETCollege basketball fans are going to be able to look at several smaller-conference games on Friday night, but that doesn’t mean bigger conferences will be absent from the schedule. Where have we decided to focus with our NCAA Basketball picks today?

Providence Friars vs. Seton Hall Pirates
The Friars are on the NCAA tournament bubble, and since Seton Hall has been struggling for much of this season – at least to the extent that the Pirates do not represent a breakthrough kind of victory for an opponent – Providence has to be able to beat the Hall to avoid suffering a huge dent in its NCAA case. The Friars would move down several spots relative to the bubble and other bubble contenders if they lose this game. Seton Hall, thanks to a recent run of good play, is the favorite in this game on its home court in Newark, N.J. However, the sense here is that Providence is going to put together a strong game, since it should have all the motivation it needs and then some in this case.
Pick: Providence +3

Iona Gaels vs. Manhattan Jaspers
We stay in the north east for the second of our NCAA Basketball picks. This is a game in which Iona won’t be as motivated as Manhattan. Iona leads the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference by two full games with only two games left in the regular season. The Gaels can afford to lose this game on the road and yet still win the MAAC in their 18th and final league game this upcoming weekend. Manhattan is three games behind Iona and is trying to fight for third place in the conference, so that it can avoid Iona until the finals of the MAAC Tournament if the two teams do meet in that event. Iona is going to be the top seed in its conference tournament, so by getting the third seed, Manhattan would play the second seed in a potential semifinal, moving out of Iona’s path until the championship round. That’s going to help Manhattan here, as will home court. Iona will cover the spread, though.
Pick: Iona +5

Washington State Cougars vs. Washington Huskies
This is a game that Washington should win. The Huskies lost at Washington State earlier in the season, so they should be ready to gain revenge here. Playing at home will also propel Washington’s efforts against one of the worst teams in the Pac-12 Conference. Washington State just isn’t a very deep team. It doesn’t have a lot of high-end scorers and secondary options at the offensive end of the court. Washington State doesn’t have a low-post offense. It doesn’t get a lot of scoring near the rim. The Cougars used a big run midway through the second half to beat Washington the last time the two teams played. Being on the road in this game, it’s going to be hard for Washington State to use adrenaline in the same way.
Pick: Washington -8

Duquesne stays hot with win over Saint Louis

Duquesne sprang a huge upset of red-hot Saint Louis Thursday night, but wise bettors were probably aware the Dukes stood a great chance of covering a hefty spread.

Duquesne entered the road game with a 10-5-2 ATS mark and had cashed its last three in a row. The Billikens – winners of 19 in a row SU -- were 9-15 ATS and had dropped four straight pointspread decisions.

The Dukes were 13.5-point underdogs against Saint Louis, but notched a 71-64 victory to bolster their solid ATS mark and keep the Billikens in a betting-window freefall.

Home not where the heart is for Princeton backers

Princeton (15-8 SU, 8-9 ATS) is just 1-5 ATS on its home floor, including getting swept at the betting window last weekend. The Tigers beat Dartmouth 67-57 but failed to cash as a 13-point favorite last Friday, then fell to league-leading Harvard 59-47 on Saturday as a 2.5-point underdog.

The Tigers have a pair of home games this weekend as they host Yale (14-10 SU, 9-5 ATS) Friday and Brown (14-10 SU, 8-5-1 ATS) on Saturday.

UNC's 10-game winning streak bodes well for futures

Thinking about a futures bet on streaking North Carolina? Well, there is some precedent. When the Tar Heels beat North Carolina State 85-84 in overtime on Wednesday night, it marked their 10th straight win, something they hadn’t done since the 2008-09 season, when they opened with 13 straight wins and later added a 10-game winning streak.

Carolina ended that season with an 89-72 rout of Michigan State as a 7.5-point chalk in the NCAA championship game.

Columbia cashing in for Under bettors

A pretty good Ivy League bet throughout this season has been taking the under when Columbia hits the floor. The total has gone low in 11 of the Lions’ 15 lined games, and the trend has been even stronger on the highway for Columbia, at 6-1 in true road games and 9-1 counting neutral-site contests.

The Lions are at Dartmouth Friday and at Harvard on Saturday.

Kuemper gets start after Thursday's shutout

Fresh off a 21 save, shutout performance against the Edmonton Oilers Thursday, the Minnesota Wild will ride the hot goalie as Darcy Kuemper will start tonight at the Vancouver Canucks.

Kuemper has played well as starter Josh Harding remains on IR. The Saskatoon native is 9-3-2 with a 2.29 GAA and .921 save percentage on the season.

The Wild are currently +138 road dogs at the Canucks Friday.

Lightning forward Steven Stamkos, out Saturday

Stamkos is recovering from a broken right tibia which he suffered on November 11th against the Bruins. He will not play on the team's upcoming four-game road trip but expects to return on March 6th to face the Sabres.

Pens' Letang expects to return after stroke

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang is confident that he will play hockey again after suffering a stroke last month.

Speaking with reporters before the Penguins' game against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night, Letang, 26, said doctors told him that he should be able to get back on the ice. But when that happens remains unknown.

"(Doctors) said being 26 and having a stroke, it's actually a small percentage, but the chance that I get back to normal is really high," Letang said. "We'll take the decision from there, but for now, we're keeping like this. ... I'm going day by day to get to 100 percent. I feel like I'm trying to make steps and getting closer to coming back at one point."

Sabres come out of Olympic break hot

The Buffalo Sabres have come out of the Olympic break on a modest two-game winning streak and close off their mini three-game homestand against the San Jose Sharks Friday.

The Sabres defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 Tuesday, and followed that up with a 5-4 OT victory against the Boston Bruins Thursday.

The Sabres are currently +163 home dogs.

Game: Golden State Warriors @ New York Knicks
Time: Friday 02/28 8:05 PM Eastern
Pick: Golden State -6 (-101) at 5Dimes

It has been a long and disappointing season for the New York Knicks, who appeared to be a team that was starting to put all the pieces together last season. That just hasn't been the case this year, and what was a stellar season at the Garden a year ago with a 32-9 regular season record, has turned sour this year as the Knicks are a stunning 12-19. Golden State took awhile to get things going, but at 35-23 in the highly-competitive Western Conference, they are still a team to contend with. The once poor road team has picked it up, as they are 17-13 on the road this season. The Warriors have been at their best and focused off a bad 10+ point loss in their previous game, as they have followed by going 10-1-2 ATS in their last 13. Take Golden State.

Ben burns 10*

I'm playing on CLEVELAND. After a tough loss against Toronto on 2/25, the Cavaliers immediately responded by going out and upsetting the Thunder, at OKC, the following night. I expect them to carry the positive momentum into this evening’s game. The Jazz do have a couple of wins lately. However, those came at Salt Lake City. The Jazz are just 1-4 their last five road games. All four of those losses came by a minimum of eight points, three of them coming by 15 or more. Going back further finds them at just 2-8 their last 10 away from home. This hasn’t been a very good role for the Jazz the past couple of seasons either. They’re just 8-17-1 ATS (4-22 SU) as road underdogs in the 3.5 to 6 range. The Cavs, who won by 11 at Utah in early January, are a respectable 7-5 ATS when coming off a SU win as an underdog. They won and covered against the Jazz here last season and I look for them to do so again tonight. 10* personal favorite
