Jazz have been terrible ATS play in New York
By JUSTIN HARTLING

History is not on the side of the Utah Jazz when they visit New York Thursday. Normally an average team against the spread, the Jazz are atrocious against the Knicks.

The Jazz are a miserable 4-18 ATS in the last 22 versus the Knicks, including an even worse 0-8 in the past eight in New York.

The Jazz are 6.5-point road dogs when they face the Knicks Friday.

Friday's Tip Sheet
By Kevin Rogers

Grizzlies at Bulls – 7:05 PM EST

Memphis: 34-26 SU, 27-31-2 ATS
Chicago: 34-27 SU, 32-29 ATS

The Grizzlies are coming off probably their flattest performance of the season on Wednesday, falling at Brooklyn, 103-94. The nine-point loss doesn’t seem that embarrassing on the surface, but Memphis trailed, 21-2 to start the game and played from behind all night, as Zach Randolph missed the defeat with the flu. In spite of that setback, the Grizzlies have won 24 of their past 35 contests since a five-game skid in mid-December, while cashing 11 of their last 15 away from FedEx Forum.

The Bulls continue to make a push in the Eastern Conference, trying to grab the third seed, as Chicago knocked off Detroit on Wednesday, 105-94 to cash as four-point road favorites. Tom Thibodeau’s club has won five of their past six games, while riding a five-game hot streak at the United Center since the start of February. Chicago took care of Memphis as five-point road underdogs on December 30 with a 95-91 triumph, snapping a three-game skid to the Grizzlies which dated back to 2012.

Kings at Raptors – 7:05 PM EST

Sacramento: 22-39 SU, 27-32-2 ATS
Toronto: 33-26 SU, 35-23-1 ATS

The Kings continue a seven-game road swing following Wednesday’s blowout of Milwaukee, 116-102 to cash as 3 ½-point favorites. Sacramento seeks just its second winning streak of three games this season, while posting a 7-14 SU and 9-12 ATS record off a victory. Mike Malone’s team has won four straight meetings against the Raptors, including a 109-101 home triumph last month. However, Sacramento has won just twice in 14 tries this season on the road against teams off a win, while covering four times in this situation.

The Raptors have been off since Sunday’s home underdog victory over the Warriors, as Toronto improved to 5-2 SU and 4-3 ATS since the All-Star break. At home, the Raptors haven’t been as strong as other playoff teams (17-12), while owning a dreadful 2-6 SU/ATS record at the Air Canada Center against teams off consecutive wins. Defensively, Toronto has limited seven of its past eight opponents to less than 100 points, resulting in six ‘unders.’

Blazers at Mavericks – 8:35 PM EST

Portland: 42-19 SU, 33-28 ATS
Dallas: 36-26 SU, 34-28 ATS

The Blazers have stepped up their defense since the All-Star break, allowing less than 100 points to six of their last seven foes, while cashing six consecutive ‘unders.’ The most recent stellar defensive showing came in Wednesday’s 102-78 blowout of the struggling Hawks, the sixth win in the past seven games for Portland. The Blazers embark on a five-game road trip that includes visits to Houston, Memphis, and San Antonio following Friday’s matchup at Dallas. In two meetings this season, the road team has won each time, including a 127-111 rout by the Blazers as two-point road favorites on January 18.

The Mavericks fell behind early and never recovered in Wednesday’s 115-110 defeat at Denver, allowing 41 points in the opening quarter. Dallas lost to Denver for the third time this season, while losing its third straight overall since a four-game winning streak. Rick Carlisle’s club has compiled a terrific 9-2 ATS record as a favorite of 3 ½ points or less, which includes a 2-0 SU/ATS mark at the American Airlines Center.

Pacers at Rockets – 9:35 PM EST

Indiana: 46-15 SU, 33-27-1 ATS
Houston: 42-19 SU, 32-27-2 ATS

The Pacers are still the top seed in the Eastern Conference, but Indiana is coming off consecutive losses to Golden State and Charlotte earlier this week. Frank Vogel’s team fell in the final seconds to the Warriors, but the Central Division leaders were limited to just eight points in the opening quarter of Wednesday’s 109-87 setback to the Bobcats as 4 ½-point favorites. Indiana has won five of its past seven on the road with at least one day of rest, while annihilating Houston at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in December, 114-81.

The Rockets are breathing down the necks of the Spurs in the Southwest Division, thanks to winning 13 of their past 15 games. Houston is rolling at the Toyota Center by going 9-1 SU and 6-4 ATS since falling at home to Oklahoma City in mid-January, which includes wins over Miami, Phoenix, San Antonio, and Portland. In the last four games at home, the Rockets are playing their typical run-and-gun style, cashing the ‘over’ four times, while putting up at least 106 points in five consecutive home contests.

What these NBA contenders need to do to beat Heat, OKC
by Bryan Covert

NBA observers would likely agree the Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder are the favorites to win their respective conferences and compete for the right to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

And, according to the NBA oddsmakers, that’s true. Miami is priced as a +175 favorite to win the NBA title with Oklahoma City right behind it at +350.

There are several other NBA teams who would disagree, however. We look at four of those outlining contenders and pinpoint just what they need to improve on in the final quarter of the season to keep up to – and surpass – the Heat and Thunder.

San Antonio Spurs (+1,100 to win the NBA title)

The Spurs just keep getting it done, year after year. And, lo and behold, they are at it again, sitting just 1.5 games back of OKC for top spot in the West.

They are 6-1 SU since the break and are finally healthy. Not only does this mean they have their best players able to play but they are also able to rest the likes of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili without having to blow the cobwebs off the 10th, 11th and 12th guys on the bench.

They need to just continue doing what they’ve been doing. Over their last three games, the Spurs’ assist-to-turnover ratio is a league-leading 31. They’re rebounding at a tremendous rate on the defensive end and executing efficiently on the offensive end. These are exactly the things that get you the wins in the postseason and if the Spur continue playing like this until the end of the season it wouldn’t be wise to bet against them.

Los Angeles Clippers (+1,200)

The Los Angeles Clippers may have quietly become the Western Conference’s most likely challenger to the Thunder. Since the All-Star break, they are 5-2 SU and ATS and have recorded impressive road wins over the likes of OKC, Houston, and Phoenix. Blake Griffin is playing at first-team, All-Star level and Chris Paul is rounding into form after a spell on the sidelines.

But they still rely too much on the fastbreak, sitting third in the league with almost 18 points per game, while sitting in the middle of the pack in points in the paint with 41.2. They just don’t seem to have that one shooting guard or small forward who can put the whole package together. New addition and oft-injured SF Danny Granger is working his way into the lineup and if L.A can figure out that role then the Clips can make some noise.

Indiana Pacers (+200)

The Pacers are currently in top spot in the Eastern Conference but are in a dogfight to see off the Miami Heat for home-court throughout the playoffs.

They are just 6-3 SU (2-7-1 ATS) since the All-Star break and just lost to the Charlotte Bobcats 109-87 as 4.5-point favorites. Unfortunately this is just the type of game the Pacers will see in the postseason - a slower grind - and people think Indiana may have trouble in a seven-game series playing this kind of basketball.

Indiana needs better play from its All-Stars Paul George and Roy Hibbert, who have struggled since the break. What’s more, they’ll need more consistent production from Lance Stephenson, who has failed to consistently perform over his season averages in points, rebounds, and assists in the majority of games since coming back from the All-Star layoff. Evan Turner may yet fill the gap if Stephenson (or George) is in a slump. But he’s unproven in the postseason.

Chicago Bulls (+5,000)

Not many would’ve put the Chicago Bulls on this list even a month ago. But, as is always the case, head coach Tom Thibodeau has them playing stingy defense and Joakim Noah has elevated his game to that of, perhaps, the best center in the league right now.

But we’ve seen this before and it usually ends up with the Bulls putting up a valiant effort against one of the Eastern Conference heavyweights in the playoffs before going down in five or six games. What this team needs to show before being a realistic contender is the ability to score the big bucket.

The Bulls are the third-worst team in offensive efficiency in the league with only .981 points per possession and average 18 points per game from behind the arc, which is fourth lowest. If you see these numbers start to climb, which they have recently, Chicago may just be a sleeper in the East.

NCAA championship could lead to gambling addiction
by Justin Hartling

With betting on the NCAA tournament becoming more prevalent within society, some are speaking out saying that the event could be a gateway to gambling addictions.

Stephenie Roberts, a gambling addiction councilor, told a Kansas news outlet "When there's a winning team, people get excited." Roberts is referring to the Wichita State Shockers who are the first college hoops team to have an undefeated season since 2004. According to Bet365, the Shockers are +900 to win the tourney after starting the season as long shots.

"More of the general public probably does participate in [NCAAB betting] because of office pools and things like that are common..." says Roberts. The increased popularity of bracket betting cannot be denied. US President Barack Obama has filled out a bracket publicly over the past few years and philanthropist Warren Buffett is offering $1 billion to anyone who could fill out the bracket perfectly.

Roberts also says "It's important to realize it's not how much you want to win but how much you can afford to lose that should determine whether or not you're betting."

Capping college basketball's the tightest conference races
by Chase Ruttig

The final weekend of the NCAAB regular season is finally upon us and many major conferences are still sorting out their pecking order before the postseason tournaments begin.

Basketball bettors can find added value in these teams either trying to grab to top seed in the conference or improve their current one. Here are a few tight conference races to cap this weekend:

American Athletic Conference

Cincinnati at Rutgers (Saturday)
UConn at Louisville (Saturday)

The inaugural AAC regular season title is likely going to be decided on the final day of the season as Cincinnati and Louisville wrap up the year to see which former Big East school will grab top spot.

Cincinnati first has to win a tough game against Memphis at home Thursday, but has the much easier path playing lowly Rutgers Saturday. The Cardinals will need to beat out Shabazz Napier and the Huskies on Senior Night.

ACC

Syracuse at Florida State (Sunday)
North Carolina at Duke (Saturday)

With Virginia clinching the ACC title last weekend, the most intriguing race left in the conference is the weekend battle for the No. 2 seed in the ACC tournament. Syracuse and UNC are tied for second, but Duke can sneak into to the No. 2 spot with a win over UNC and a Syracuse loss to Florida State Sunday.

Big 12

Oklahoma at TCU (Saturday)
Texas at Texas Tech (Saturday)

Rivals Texas and Oklahoma both hope the other school chokes its way out of a tie for the No. 2 seed in the Big 12 Saturday. Both schools walk into Senior Night games on the road in spots where they’re expected to win.

Oklahoma plays last-place TCU while the Longhorns take on lowly Texas Tech. If one of the two gets upset it is likely there will be an outright No. 2 seed and no tiebreakers necessary.

Mountain West Conference

New Mexico at San Diego State (Saturday)

In arguably the biggest game on Saturday's card, New Mexico and San Diego State will settle the regular season outright title. The Lobos head to one of the toughest gyms in the nation to try to spoil the Aztecs party on Senior Night.

With both tied for first in the MWC and both in the Top 25, expect a hard-fought game after the Lobos won by 14 points at home in the first meeting of the year between these mid-major giants.

Big Ten

Wisconsin at Nebraska (Sunday)
Michigan State at Ohio State (Sunday)

Wisconsin and Michigan State are clawing for the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament and have to earn big wins in enemy territory to do so Sunday. The Badgers travel to Nebraska where the Cornhuskers have lost just once all season while the Spartans try to top the Buckeyes on Aaron Craft's Senior Night.

There’s a chance both teams could lose Sunday. But with a shot at better seed in the postseason, both schools are out to ruin some seniors’ big moment at home with convincing wins before the conference tournament tips off.

Players MARCH MADNESS *8* Friday on Wright State on 7 March
Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach MARCH MADNESS Friday 8* (Regular Play) on Wright State vs. Oakland @ 7:00 p.m. ET
The Wright State Raiders face the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in the Horizon League tournament Friday. “The Bulldog” breaks down his selection on Wright State with his Three-Factor Analysis: 1. Wright State rolled into the postseason on a four-game winning streak, kicked off by a 72-71 win at Oakland on Feb. 16. 2. Oakland is coming off a close call versus Youngston State, needing overtime to keep moving in the tournament. The Golden Grizzlies could be bound for a letdown after that incredible comeback, especially against a Raiders team that has had their number this season. 3. Wright State has done a good job containing Oakland’s Travis Bader – the nation’s top 3-point shooter. Bader scored 39 points against the Penguins, hitting 7 of 18 from outside. The Raiders held Bader without a 3-ball in their Feb. 16 matchup, only the third time he’s failed to strike from outside this season. Wright State guard Matt Vest checked the Golden Grizzlies top threat to only nine points on 1-of-10 shooting.
Play on Wright State as an 8* Regular Selection Friday.
Good luck, Scott.

Players NBA *10* Friday on OVER in New Orleans on 7 March
Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NBA Friday 10* (Top Play) on OVER in New Orleans vs. Milwaukee @ 8:00 p.m. ET
The New Orleans Pelicans host the Milwaukee Bucks Friday. “The Bulldog” breaks down his selection on OVER in New Orleans with his Three-Factor Analysis: 1. The Bucksare the hottest Over bet in the league, stringing together six straight Over paydays and topping the total in eight of their last 10 outings. 2. Milwaukee has upped its offensive production during this stretch, averaging 103.5 points per game in the last nine contests – well above the Bucks’ season average of 93.9. 3. New Orleans has slide a bit defensively in recent games, allowing 112.6 points per game over its last six outings. The Pelicans edged the Lakers in a shootout Tuesday, winning 132-125 – playing well Over the total.
Play on OVER in New Orleans as a 10* Top Selection Friday.
Good luck, Scott.

Players NBA *8* Friday on Utah on 7 March
Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NBA Friday 8* (Regular Play) on Utah at New York @ 7:30 p.m. ET
The New York Knicks host the Utah Jazz Friday. “The Bulldog” breaks down his selection on Utah with his Three-Factor Analysis: 1. The Jazz are in rough shape but perhaps the only other team in worse in New York. The Knicks rolled off seven straight losses before knocking off Minnesota Wednesday. There’s no way this team should be favored by this much over anybody. 2. Utah has been pushed around inside, allowing Washington to score 56 points in the paint in Wednesday loss in DC. Luckily for the Jazz, New York’s offense puts up only 33.8 points in the paint per game – fewest in the NBA. 3. Utah needs improvement from its starters to get out of this rut, but its bench has been actually giving great support. The reserves combined for 45 points versus the Wizards, including 19 points from Alec Burks.
Play on Utah as an 8* Regular Selection Friday.
Good luck, Scott.

Players NHL *8* Friday on OVER in Detroit on 7 March
Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NHL Friday 8* (Regular Play) on OVER Detroit vs. New Jersey @ 7:30 p.m. ET
The Detroit Red Wings host the New Jersey Devils Friday. “The Bulldog” breaks down his selection on OVER in Detroit with his Three-Factor Analysis: 1. The Devils head into Friday on a profitable Over run, topping the total in four straight games. New Jersey has caught fire on offense, netting 17 totals goals in that span. 2. The Red Wings have watch their defense slip a bit in recent games. They’ve given up seven goals in the past two games after allowing one or fewer in four of the previous five outings. Detroit fell 4-3 to New Jersey in the first leg of this home-and-home set, getting outshot 14-4 and allowing three goals in the third period. 3. Both teams have a potent power play, with the Devils ranked eighth in the NHL (20.8 percent) and Detroit netting a goal with the man advantage in four games in a row and seven of its last eight outings. Penalties could be extra costly Friday night.
Play on OVER in Detroit as an 8* Regular Selection Friday.
Good luck, Scott.

Game: Utah Jazz @ New York Knicks
Time: Friday 03/07 7:35 PM Eastern
Pick: Utah +7 (-105) at 5Dimes

The Knicks are 22-40 this season including 12-20 straight-up and 11-21 ATS at home. As such, this team has no business giving 7 points to any team. The Jazz are 12-2 ATS this season on the road after allowing 100+ points in back-to-back games. Meanwhile, New York is just 3-11 ATS at home this season in non-conference games, and 6-16 ATS after a game in which they allowed 105+ points. Yes, Utah is bad, but getting 7 points from another really bad team makes them a strong play. Take the Jazz here.

Horizon League offers good betting opportunity

All the big conference tournaments take place next week, but the mid-major schools offer some good betting opportunities, too. The Horizon League Tournament is a good example.

No. 2 seed Cleveland State (21-10 SU) is ranked second nationally at the betting window with a stout 20-7-1 ATS record, trailing only Wichita State (21-6-1 ATS). No. 1 seed Green Bay (24-5 SU) was among the national leaders in mid-January with a 10-5 ATS mark, before going on a five-game ATS plunge. But the Phoenix (15-10 ATS) are right back on track now, entering the league tourney on a 5-0 SU and ATS hot streak.

As the top two seeds, Green Bay and Cleveland State get a bye into Saturday’s semifinals, awaiting the winners of tonight’s quarterfinal games.

Colonial Conference boasts excellent ATS teams

The Colonial Athletic Association Tournament opens in Baltimore Friday, and the nine-team league offers an array of betting options, with several teams doing well against the number this season.

Third-seeded William & Mary (18-11 SU) is 13th in the nation with a 15-7-1 ATS mark. Top-seeded Delaware (22-9 SU) is 25th nationally at 14-8-1 ATS, and No. 2 seed Towson (22-9 SU) is 42nd at 14-9 ATS. Even lowly Hofstra (9-22 SU) – seeded eighth and competing in tonight’s play-in game against North Carolina-Wilmington – is 14-9-3 ATS, 33rd in the nation.

Shockers' Marshall piling up incentive money

No. 2 Wichita State has cleaned up on the court and at the betting window, going 31-0 SU and a nation-leading 21-6-1 ATS in the regular season. And it’s not just bettors who have benefited.

As USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz tweeted Thursday, Shockers coach Gregg Marshall is piling up the incentive money, and it’s not even NCAA Tournament time yet. This week, Marshall was named Missouri Valley Conference coach of the year, grabbing a $25,000, which gives him $134,000 in bonuses so far this season.

The top-seeded Shockers got a first-round bye in the MVC Tournament at St. Louis, and they will open play with a 1:05 p.m. EST tipoff today against No. 9 seed Evansville.

Sabres win again, hot since Olympic break

With the Buffalo Sabres' 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday evening, they've now improved to a 4-1 record since the league resumed action after the Sochi Olympics.

The Sabres went into the break on a four-game losing skid but have put together wins over the Carolina Hurricanes, Boston Bruins, San Jose Sharks and the Lightning heading into Friday.

The Sabres finish a three game road trip Friday at the Florida Panthers Friday. Buffalo is currently a +144 road dog.

Devils' Kovalchuk penalty reduced

The NHL reduced the penalties that the New Jersey Devils were dealt when they signed forward Ilya Kovalchuk in 2010 to what was deemed a cap-circumventing contract, the league announced Thursday.

The Devils will be able to keep their first-round draft pick this year.

Originally New Jersey was fined $3 million, lost a third-round draft pick in 2011 and would also lose a first-round pick.

Calgary on fire for Under bettors

There hasn't been much reason to bet the Calgary Flames this season, but the Under has been solid in recent games.

The Flames are 0-4-1 O/U in their last five games and are 0-3-1 O/U since action resumed after the Winter Olympics.

The club parted ways with goaltender Reto Berra on trade deadline day, but have gotten a pair of excellent start from goalie Joni Ortio. The Finn is 1-1 with a 1.50 GAA and .945 save percentage in two starts with Calgary this season.

The New York Islanders visit the Flames Friday with a total of 5.5 on the board.

Clippers hand Lakers their worst loss ever

As much as the Los Angeles Clippers enjoyed hammering the Los Angeles Lakers again, Darren Collison said his team has bigger goals.

"No disrespect to the Lakers, that's a very good team, but right now we want to accomplish something big," the Clippers guard said.

For the second time in as many meetings, the Clippers dealt the Lakers a massive beating.

The Clippers had eight players score in double figures en route to a 142-94 blowout of the Lakers on Thursday night at Staples Center. The 48-point margin was the worst defeat in Lakers history and the largest win in Clippers history. The 142 points were a season high for the Clippers.

NOTES: The Clippers outscored the Lakers 26-7 in fast-break points in the first half, including a 19-0 run in the second quarter. ... Clippers G Jamal Crawford missed his third consecutive game with a strained left calf. Clippers coach Doc Rivers said Crawford could return for Saturday's contest against the Atlanta Hawks. ... Clippers F Jared Dudley sat out due to back spasms. ... Lakers F Jordan Hill did not play because of a sore right knee. Hill is listed as day-to-day. ... The Clippers are 29-4 when leading after the second quarter. ... The Lakers fell to 22-8 all-time as the home team at Staples Center against the Clippers. ... The Lakers visit the Denver Nuggets on Friday before hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday.

Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors - Prob Fri

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry sat out the fourth quarter of Wednesday's game against Celtics with leg soreness but is expected to play Friday against the Hawks.

Ty Lawson, Denver Nuggets - Prob Fri

Denver Nuggets PG Ty Lawson suffered a minor heel injury against the Mavericks on Wednesday but expects to play in Friday's game against the Lakers.

Jazz have been terrible ATS play in New York

History is not on the side of the Utah Jazz when they visit New York Thursday. Normally an average team against the spread, the Jazz are atrocious against the Knicks.

The Jazz are a miserable 4-18 ATS in the last 22 versus the Knicks, including an even worse 0-8 in the past eight in New York.

The Jazz are 6.5-point road dogs when they face the Knicks Friday.

Wright State (18-13) meets up with Oakland(13-19) in the second round of the Horizon Conference tourney. Wright St comes in having won 4 in a row and 5 of their last 6. They won a squeaker against Oakland last time they played, winning by 1 point and the Raiders finished 3rd in the regular season, while Oakland was 6th. The main thing here is that Oakland is absolutely terrible away from home, going 3-14 and they score 6 less points on the road than they do at home. Wright St doesn't score many at 67.4 ppg but they also don’t give up many, allowing just 62.3 ppg. This time of year, defense wins games and we like the Raiders only having to cover less than 2 buckets. The Sharps say…
