Big 12 tournament betting preview: Value in teams chasing Jayhawks

The Big 12 tournament is a mix of things we’ve come to expect out of the conference. Kansas is the regular season champ and a host of schools are looking to knock off the Jayhawks for a shot at an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the teams to watch in the Big 12 this week.

Favorites

Kansas Jayhawks (+200) – Their star freshman Joel Embiid may be out with a back injury, but the Jayhawks still earned another outright regular season title and expect to be contenders for the conference double. Leading scorer and fellow freshman Andrew Wiggins (16.8 ppg) is going to have to step up and shake off a season finale loss on the road to West Virginia if the Jayhawks are going to make their conference tournament stay a long one.

Iowa State Cyclones (+400) - One of the best teams in non-conference play, the Cyclones suffered a midseason slump before roaring to the finish line to finish third in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. Boasting Big 12 Player of the Year Melvin Ejim (18.2 PPG, 8.6 RPG) and senior guard DeAndre Kane (17.1 PPG, 5.9 APG) the Cyclones have two experienced leaders who will leave everything on the floor.


Live Underdog

Oklahoma State Cowboys (+400) – Forget the losing streak and the Marcus Smart suspension. The Cowboys won four straight (including a Kansas sweep of the Wildcats and Jayhawks) before pushing Iowa State to overtime, proving they’re still a force to be reckoned with. The No. 8 seed Cowboys have work to do, but they’re a team that nobody wants to face.


Best ATS team

Oklahoma Sooners (+600) – The Sooners (18-10-1 ATS) are the third favorite to win the Big 12 tournament and have been an ATS force. Six straight ATS wins and eight of the last 10 have bettors confident that the surprising Sooners can make a run deep into the conference tournament while continuing their ATS success.


Best total team

Texas Tech Red Raiders (+7,500) - The scrappy Red Raiders have played strong defense under respected head coach Tubby Smith. Texas Tech has troubles scoring the ball - 244th in the nation - which is equally responsible for the Red Raiders’ playing Under the total eight times in their final 10 games. Their run in the tournament may be short so this value Under play may not give total bettors many opportunities.

Big East tournament betting preview: Villanova doesn't want to play Creighton

The first tournament of the reformed Big East is set to take place in a battle between new faces and defenders of the old guard looking for the conference crown at Madison Square Garden.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the teams to watch in the Big East this week.

Favorites

Villanova Wildcats (+150) – The Wildcats defended the Big East and held off newcomers all season on their way to a 28-3 record and a outright conference title. Looking for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, Villanova may have to conquer their demons against a Creighton team that swept them in conference play in Nebraska and on its home court in Philadelphia.

Creighton Bluejays (+175) - Tops in the nation in 3-point shooting (42.1 percent) and FG percentage (49.6 percent), Creighton is led by senior sensation Doug McDermott who has already passed Larry Bird in scoring and is supported by sharpshooter Ethan Wragge and guards Auston Chatman and Grant Gibbs. Two 20-point wins over Villanova point to Creighton as the likely favorite in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 final, but first they’ll have to get there by outlasting the field.


Live Underdog

St. John's Red Storm (+600) – A member of the "old" Big East, the Johnnies call MSG their home and need a big tournament run to ensure that their 20-11 record is improved enough to crack the final field. St. John’s has wins in eight of its last 10, even if a home loss to Xavier is cause for concern, and the ability to hang with true Final Four contenders in Villanova and Creighton.


Best ATS team

Villanova Wildcats – Not much of a curveball in the Big East as the conference winners have the best ATS record with the Wildcats matching their 28-3 SU record with an equally-impressive 21-8 ATS mark.


Best totals team

Villanova Wildcats - In addition to having the best ATS mark the Wildcats also have the best O/U differential with their games going Over the total 18 out of 28 times.

SEC tournament betting preview: Can anyone beat the Gators?

Most experts believe the Southeastern Conference title is the Florida Gators' to lose - and it's hard to argue with that logic, as the Gators roll into the Georgia Dome with a perfect conference record and the top rank in the nation.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the teams to watch in the SEC tournament at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta this week:

Favorites

Florida Gators (10-13) - No team in the conference could touch Billy Donovan's Gators, who went through a shaky stretch in mid-to-late February - beating Auburn, Mississippi and Vanderbilt by single digits - but have no equal within the SEC. Casey Prather leads a balanced attack with 14.6 points per game while shooting a blistering 62.5 percent from the floor.

Kentucky Wildcats (4-1) - John Calipari's crew represents the best chance at knocking off powerhouse Florida, but was soundly outclassed in an 84-65 loss at Gainesville, Fla., last weekend. Julius Randle had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the loss, and while it will be difficult for the Gators - or anyone else in the tournament - to stop him, he's going to need plenty more help to lead Kentucky to the upset.


Live Underdog

Arkansas Razorbacks 15-1) - Not only are the fifth-seeded Razorbacks the only team in the SEC to take the Gators to overtime - dropping an 84-82 decision back on Jan 11 - they also handled the second-seeded Wildcats twice in extra time during the regular season, including a 71-67 decision at Lexington on Feb. 27. Arkansas won six of its final seven games going into the tournament, and ranks in the top-20 nationally in scoring at 80.6 points per game.


Best ATS team

Tennessee Volunteers (5-1)– The Volunteers (17-12 ATS) were the best of a tightly-packed bunch atop the conference ATS standings, ultimately prevailing thanks to a three-game winning streak to end the season. Fourth-seeded Tennessee comes into the tournament as a longshot, but has momentum on its side after obliterating its final three opponents - Vanderbilt, Auburn and Missouri - by a combined 93 points.


Best Over/Under

Vanderbilt Commodores - No SEC team does low-scoring affairs like the Commodores (6-21-2 O/U), who returned more Under value than just about any team in all of Division I. Kevin Stallings' roster put together three lengthy Under streaks throughout the season, capped by an eight-game run to close the season. Just how offensively void were Commodores games down the stretch? Only three times did either team score more than 70 points in Vanderbilt's final 14 games.

ACC Conference Tournament betting cheat sheet

Round 1

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Wake Forest (+3.5)

Notre Dame enters its first ACC Tournament as the 13th seed and looks to avenge an earlier defeat against Wake Forest in the opening round at Greensboro, N.C. on Wednesday. The Fighting Irish comes in off three straight solid efforts, although the last two were losses to Pittsburgh in overtime and at 15th-ranked North Carolina 63-61.

Wake Forest, the 12th seed, shocked sixth-ranked Duke last week at home before losing momentum in a 13-point defeat at Miami (Fla.) on Saturday. Leading scorer Codi Miller-McIntyre (12.9) looks to rebound off a two-point effort at Miami, but has dished out at least six assists in three of his last four contests. Forwards Travis McKie (11.2) and Thomas (11) also score in double figures and Tyler Cavanaugh (9.2) posted 20 points against Duke.

The Hokies have struggled with injuries much of the season and will be trying to snap a six-game losing streak. Senior Jarell Eddie leads the way at 13.2 points per game for a team that has shot 40.6 percent from the field overall – 37.2 in league play.

Miami (Fla.) will have to win five games in five days to defend its ACC Tournament title. Senior forward Erik Swoope has averaged 13.2 points over the last five contests and the Hurricanes need a big effort from improving 7-0 center Tonye Jekiri for a long tournament run.

Ryan Anderson leads all active conference players in double-doubles (19), ranking ninth in the league in rebounding (7.1) and 11th in scoring (14.3). Eight of the Eagles’ conference losses came by single digits.

The Yellow Jackets closed the season with two victories in a row, starting with the upset of the Syracuse Orange, and own a pair of close victories over the Eagles this season. They have battled injuries all season, but are finally healthy with leading scorer Trae Golden and Robert Carter Jr. back to full strength.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys (-9)

The ninth-seeded Red Raiders ended the regular season on a high note by defeating Texas to put an end to a six-game losing streak. They will need senior forward Jaye Crockett to be on his game to make any noise in this tourney. Crockett, who leads Texas Tech in scoring (13.5) and rebounding (6.3), averaged just 6.8 points on 14-of-40 shooting before breaking out of his slump to score 22 points (on 9-of-13 shooting) and grab 10 rebounds in Saturday’s upset of Texas.

Marcus Smart has more than a little bit of history with Texas Tech this season. The Oklahoma State guard will try to assure the Red Raiders don’t damage the Cowboys’ NCAA Tournament hopes when the teams meet in Wednesday’s first round of the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City. Smart infamously shoved a Texas Tech fans in the final seconds of a road loss to the Red Raiders and then returned from a three-game suspension 14 days later to lead the Cowboys past Texas Tech.

The 10th-seeded Horned Frogs have lost 18 straight games since the calendar turned to 2014. Forward Amric Fields (knee) is expected to miss his sixth consecutive game and the Horned Frogs badly miss their second-leading scorer (13.1) and rebounder (6.1). His absence leaves junior point guard Kyan Anderson (17 points, 4.4 assists) to again carry the load and Anderson has topped 20 points in seven of the last 13 games.

Seventh-seeded Baylor has won seven of its last eight games to re-emerge after a midseason swoon in which it lost seven of eight contests. Shooting guard Brady Heslip (11.5 ppg) made 13 3-pointers in the two routs of the Horned Frogs and is two away from becoming the fifth player in school history to make 100 or more in a season. Point guard Kenny Chery (11.7 points, five assists) has been strong down the stretch and is averaging 20.3 points over the past four games after ending the regular season with a 29-point outing against Kansas State.

Washington Huskies vs. Utah Utes (-5.5)

The Huskies closed the regular season by winning three of their final four, and senior guard C.J. Wilcox has averaged 22 points in his last two contests. The Huskies have received solid production from freshmen guards Andrew Andrews and Nigel Williams-Goss, who have combined to average 26.1 points in league play.

The Utes’ weak nonconference schedule and lack of signature wins has some experts suggesting No. 8 seed Utah needs to win the league tournament in order to advance to the Big Dance. The Utes are second in the Pac-12 in scoring defense while holding teams to an average of 64 points.

The 6-5 junior averaged 15 points and six rebounds in two games against Colorado, and he’s averaging 20.7 points while shooting 21-for-35 from the field over his last three games.

The Buffaloes defeated the Trojans in both meetings this season, 83-62 at home on Jan. 18 and 83-74 on Feb. 16 in Los Angeles. Colorado’s biggest challenge against the Trojans might be dealing with the lingering effects of Saturday's disappointing loss to California, when the Golden Bears won despite not making a single field goal in overtime.

The Ducks’ roller-coaster season included a 13-0 start and a 3-8 record at one point in league play before registering impressive wins over UCLA and Arizona down the stretch. Guard Joseph Young averages a team-high 18.2 points, but he could use a bounce-back game after being held to eight points on 3-of-12 shooting in last Saturday's 64-57 win over the Arizona Wildcats.

The 11th-seeded Cougars snapped an eight-game losing streak with Saturday’s stunning 73-55 win over UCLA, and they’ll need a similar effort against a veteran Stanford squad.

The Cardinal swept the season series with an 80-48 home victory on Jan. 15 before winning 69-56 in Pullman on Feb. 15. They closed the regular season by losing three of their final four games and remains squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into Wednesday’s contest.

AAC Conference Tournament betting cheat sheet

South Florida Bulls vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (-2.5)

The Bulls look to snap an eight-game losing streak, which included three one-point losses. Leading scorer Victor Rudd averaged 21 points and 7.8 rebounds during the past six games, scoring 32.2 percent of his teams points during that stretch. Wednesday's winner plays fifth-ranked and second-seeded Louisville in Thursday's 3 p.m. ET quarterfinal.

Myles Mack leads the Scarlet Knights, who needed to erase a 15-point second-half deficit on March 1 to finish the sweep of South Florida, with 15.1 points and 4.4 assists. Kadeem Jack, who adds 14.1 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds, averaged 25.5 points in the two games against the Bulls. Moore adds 11.4 points for Rutgers, which outrebounded Connecticut (in a 69-63 loss) and Cincinnati last week.

Central Florida Knights vs. Temple Owls (+1)

He is the only AAC player ranked in the league's top 15 scoring, rebounding, assists (3.6), steals (1.6) and field-goal percentage (46.8).

The Owls enter the tournament after back-to-back wins, including a home overtime victory against the Golden Knights on March 4. Temple is one of six Division I teams (Iona, Murray State, Northwestern State, Notre Dame, Quinnipiac) with four players averaging at least 13 points.

Miami, Georgia Tech getting plenty of play in ACC tourney

The Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament gets underway Wednesday with three matchups and we talk to Michael Stewart from Carbonsports about the action on all the games.

While Carbonsports has seen good two way action in the Notre Dame(-3.5)-Wake Forrest matchup, they have seen heavy play on the favorites; Miami and Georgia Tech in the other two games. They face Virgina Tech and Boston College respectively.

"We opened Miami -6 and nearly all the initial money has been on the favorite. With nearly eighty percent of the early money on Miami, we went to -6.5 earlier today," Stewart.

"We opened Georgia Tech and we've seen mostly Georgia Tech money at that price. I believe we’ll eventually get to GT -1.5 either later today or sometime tomorrow, unless we see sharp money on the other side which hasn’t been the case so far."

AAC tournament (Memphis)

Brooklyn Nets at Miami Heat (-9.5)

After halting a three-game losing streak last time out, the Miami Heat will look to extend its torrid pace at home when the Brooklyn Nets pay a visit on Wednesday. The Heat have won six straight on home court and only the Indiana Pacers (29-4) are more efficient in their own building than Miami (25-4) this season. After the Heat clinched a playoff spot in a 99-90 effort against Washington Monday, Dwyane Wade told reporters, "We needed this win. We're not used to losing three games in a row."

Brooklyn comes to town with six wins in its last seven games and an NBA-best 22-9 record in 2014. It's been more than six years, however, since the Nets won in Miami - an eight-game span that dates back to February, 2008 - but Brooklyn shouldn't lack confidence against the Heat, joining the Chicago Bulls as one of only two teams to top Miami twice this season. "Guys defensively have been together as one (and) sharing the ball," coach Jason Kidd told the New York Post of Brooklyn's recent success, adding, "It's been fun to watch."

Analysis: I'm taking the points with Air Force on Wednesday. The Bulldogs won both regular season meetings, but the second tilt got awfully close down the stretch with Air Force pulling within four points with under one minute to go in the game. Fresno finished with a 7-point win and a season sweep. But this isn't a series that's been based on major matchup advantages and we're getting value with the underdog. Air Force is getting the same amount of points in Las Vegas as they did when they played at Fresno State earlier this season. These teams look quite even in several statistical categories, but Fresno is on a 10-1 ATS run, which along with a SU up-tick has led to what I believe is an over-adjusted number.
