Big Ten Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 2

Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Michigan Wolverines

Illinois' Tracy Abrams, who scored 22 points over his previous four contests, went 8-of-16 from the field and 7-of-9 from the foul line en route to a season-high 25-point performance on Thursday – the most points the junior has ever scored against a Big Ten opponent. The scoring explosion was particularly unexpected after he made only five free throws and scored a total of 22 points over the previous four games on 23.3 percent shooting. The Illini have generated at least eight steals in each of their last five victories after doing so only four times over their first 26 games.

Michigan was supposed to unravel when Mitch McGary was lost to a back injury, but it proved to be the turning point of the season instead. The top-seeded Wolverines, who eye their sixth straight win on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis when they meet Illinois, sported a 6-4 record when their rugged forward was ruled out indefinitely. The Wolverines rallied to win 17 of their final 20 games, including 15 in league play – the most by the school since 1993.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.
* Illinois is 0-7 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Michigan is 4-0 ATS in its last four games following an ATS loss.

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Buckeyes managed to advance despite a 1-of-14 performance from beyond the arc, continuing a disturbing trend over their last eight games. Over that stretch, Ohio State has shot 22.6 percent from the 3-point line and made three long-range jumpers or fewer six times after converting at a 35.3-percent clip and hitting eight or more 3-pointers 10 times over its first 24 contests.

Nebraska opened conference play with four straight losses before a victory on Jan. 20 over Ohio State turned the tide of its season. The fourth-seeded Cornhuskers figure to assure themselves of their first invite to the Big Dance since 1998 if they can defeat the fifth-seeded Buckeyes again on Friday in the Big Ten quarterfinals in Indianapolis. Nebraska is 10-3 since upending Ohio State at home and coming off perhaps its most impressive win of the season – a 77-68 victory over Wisconsin.

TRENDS:

* Ohio State is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Favorite is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Under is 9-2 in Nebraska's last 11 games overall.
* Ohio State is 0-5 in its last five neutral site games.

ACC Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 3

Florida State Seminoles vs. Virginia Cavaliers (-6.5, 125)

The ninth-seeded Seminoles helped their chances for an NCAA bid by edging Maryland 67-65 in the second round Thursday. Florida State dropped a pair of 12-point decisions to Virginia in the regular season and could use another big performance from 7-3 Boris Bojanovsky, who slammed home the winning basket against Maryland.

The Cavaliers lead the nation in scoring defense and will depend on a balanced offense as they attempt to snap a four-game losing streak in ACC tournament play and reach the semifinals for the first time since 1995. The Cavaliers had their 13-game win streak snapped at Maryland on Sunday, but finished with a 16-2 record in league play.

TRENDS:

* Under is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings.
* Virginia is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Underdog is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Florida State is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 neutral site games.

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (Pick'em, 140)

No. 5 seed Pittsburgh rolled over Wake Forest 84-55 on Thursday in their first-ever ACC tournament game. Senior forward Talib Zanna was held to five points on 2-of-11 shooting in the first meeting with North Carolina, but he has been a force of late while averaging 15.2 points and 9.6 boards in his last five outings. The Panthers will need others such as junior Cameron Wright or freshmen Michael Young and Josh Newkirk to come up big.

North Carolina’s 12-game winning streak ended in its regular-season finale and the Tar Heels look to start another extended run. UNC started its league season 1-4 before Marcus Paige and James Michael McAdoo led a resurgence that ended with a 93-81 loss to Duke on Saturday. North Carolina is 90-42 all time in the ACC tournament with 17 titles, second only to Duke’s 19.

TRENDS:

* Pittsburgh is 4-1 ATS in its last five games overall.
* North Carolina is 0-4 ATS in its last four games vs. the ACC.
* Over is 4-0 in Pittsburgh's last four games overall.
* Over is 6-2 in North Carolina's last eight neutral site games.

Pac-12 Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 3

Colorado Buffaloes vs. Arizona Wildcats

The Buffaloes lost both meetings against Arizona this season, but coach Tad Boyle is eager for another shot at the Wildcats. Guard Xavier Johnson, who predicted the Buffaloes would beat Arizona by 20 prior to last month’s contest and then shot 1-for-10 from the field, enters Friday’s game on a high note after scoring in double figures in five straight games.

The Wildcats likely secured a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament even before the week began, but Thursday’s rout over an overmatched Utah team surely improved their chances. Freshman Aaron Gordon had 23 points and eight rebounds against Colorado in last month’s meeting, when the Wildcats shot 60.3 percent from the field and 8-of-17 from 3-point range.

TRENDS:

* Colorado is 2-5 ATS in its last seven games following an ATS win.
* Arizona is 5-1 ATS in its last six neutral site games.
* Under is 5-0 in Colorado's last six games overall.
* Under is 16-5-1 in Arizona's last 22 neutral site games.

Big East Tournament betting cheat sheet: Day 3

Providence Friars vs. Seton Hall Pirates

The Friars entered the Big East tournament on the NCAA bubble and could use one more win to lock up their place in the field of 68. Big East second-leading scorer Bryce Cotton battled foul trouble and was held to 12 points on 1-of-9 shooting against St. John’s, but Josh Fortune helped pick up the slack with a career-high 24 points.

Seton Hall is enjoying its first two-game winning streak in the Big East tournament in more than a decade but will need to make it four in a row to gain an improbable entry to the NCAA tournament. The eighth-seeded Pirates will try to take their third straight when they face No. 4 seed Providence in the semifinals in New York on Friday. The Pirates squandered a 15-point lead before battling back to beat Villanova and have secured a pair of one-point victories in the tournament after playing their way into the quarterfinals with a 51-50 triumph over Butler.

TRENDS:

* Pirates are 4-1 ATS in their last five games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Friars are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall.
* Under is 4-0 in Pirates last four overall.
* Under is 8-1 in Friars last 9 neutral site games.

AAC Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 3

Houston Cougars vs. Louisville Cardinals

The Cougars should be feeling confident, however, knocking off third-seeded Southern Methodist in the quarterfinals after losing twice to the Mustangs in the regular season. L.J. Rose led the conference in assists during the regular season at 5.6 but the sophomore guard can also score when asked, especially lately. He has put up 16 points in each of the last three games, a mark he hadn’t reached since November.

The Cardinals prepped for this game by posting a 61-point win against Rutgers in the quarterfinals, the most lopsided win in Division I this season. Louisville has already trounced the Cougars twice this winter, included a 39-point win in January in which the Cardinals shot 15-for-28 from beyond the 3-point arc.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Favorite is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Houston is 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Louisville is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games overall.

Big 12 Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 3

Iowa State Cyclones vs. Kansas Jayhawks

The No. 16 Cyclones received 24 points and 10 rebounds from Melvin Ejim while recording a 91-85 win over Kansas State. The Cyclones saw Dustin Hogue (19 points, 10 rebounds) join Ejim in posting a double-double and will need strong performances from guard DeAndre Kane and forward Georges Niang to slay the Jayhawks. Ejim has 10 double-doubles this season, including six games in which he has at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Top-seeded Kansas didn’t miss injured center Joel Embiid in its Big 12 tournament opener and attempts to claim another victory when it meets up with fourth-seeded Iowa State in Friday’s semifinals in Kansas City. Andrew Wiggins scored 30 points and Tarik Black stepped up to match a career high with 12 rebounds as the No. 10 Jayhawks notched a 77-70 overtime victory over Oklahoma State.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Iowa State is 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Kansas is 21-8-1 ATS in its last 30 games vs. the Big 12.
* Iowa State is 5-2 ATS in its last seven neutral site games.

NBA Odds Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews / Doc Sports

I'm not sure what the biggest upset in the NBA has been in a single game this decade, but I'd venture to guess that if Philadelphia can beat Indiana on Friday night that would be on the short list. Here's what you need to know for all of Friday's games, in order of tipoff. Only Lakers-Spurs is on national TV (NBATV).

Timberwolves at Bobcats (+2, 206.5)

This could be a season-changing win for Minnesota should it pull out the victory. The Wolves would get to two games above .500 for the first time since Nov. 22. They are playing better, winners of eight of 11. Minnesota also has won three straight on the road and will be fully-rested, having last played Tuesday in an easy win over Milwaukee. Charlotte has won four of five and hasn't lost a home game since Feb. 8 against San Antonio. Bobcats guard Gary Neal should be back after sitting out Wednesday's win at Washington for an "internal matter." The Bobcats lost 119-92 in Minnesota on Jan. 10.

Key trends: Charlotte is 1-4 ATS in its past five against teams with a winning record. The “under” has hit in 11 of Minnesota's past 14 after allowing at least 100 points in its last game.

Early lean: Wolves keep rolling.

Wizards at Magic (+5, 204)

Perhaps Washington is starting to feel the loss of Nene as the Wizards have lost back-to-back games for the first time since mid-February. The offense has gone into a shell, managing 175 total points in the two losses, although it was against good defensive clubs in the Heat and Bobcats. Orlando has lost four straight, and its only win this month was against historically-bad Philadelphia. The Magic are an incredible are 0-31 when being outrebounded this season. The Wizards are 2-0 against Orlando this year, but both were at home.

Key trends: Wizards have covered seven of the past nine meetings. The under is 4-1 in the past four in Orlando.

Early lean: Wizards win outright but Magic able to cover.

Pacers at 76ers (+16, 204.5)

I'm at the point where I no longer know what to say about Philadelphia. The Sixers have lost 18 straight -- the team record is 20 -- and amazingly the last 10 were all by at least 10 points. Philly also has lost a franchise-record 14 consecutive games at home. Philly has a D-League roster at the moment other than Thaddeus Young and Michael Carter-Williams. The Pacers ended their four-game skid Tuesday, but Larry Bird wasn't all that pleased with the 94-83 home win over Boston. Andrew Bynum made his Indiana debut and was very good with eight points and 10 boards in 16 minutes. However, he won't play in this one, which is probably a good thing. Philly fans might riot if he did as Bynum is partly responsible for the mess the Sixers are in. Indiana beat the Sixers by 14 in their only meeting on Nov. 23.

Key trends: Philadelphia is 3-13 ATS in its past 16 against teams with a winning record. The over is 5-0 in Indiana's past five against teams with a losing record.

Early lean: I don't think I've ever not taken a team getting 16 at home, but how can you possibly lean the Sixers here? Go over as well.

Grizzlies at Raptors (“pick'em,” 188)

It's the No. 3 scoring defense in Memphis against No. 4 Toronto, so hence the low total. The Raptors have allowed triple digits in just three of their past nine games and has have won seven of them. They held the Pistons to 87 in an easy win Wednesday. Toronto has won 15 of 1its past 19 at home. Memphis has won four straight, three against likely playoff teams, not allowing 100 points in any of them. Mike Conley's layup with 1.5 seconds left Wednesday beat the Pelicans. Toronto won 103-87 in Memphis on Nov. 13.

Key trends: Toronto is 10-2 in its past 12 after a win of more than 10 points. The over is 8-1 in Memphis' past nine after a win.

Early lean: Huge on under with no strong opinion on side.

Suns at Celtics (+3.5, 207.5)

Rajon Rondo will be back in the lineup for Boston on Friday night after he sat out the Celtics' 116-92 home loss to the Knicks on Wednesday in the second of a back-to-back. Boston allowed 68 first-half Knicks points, the most scored by any team at Boston in the first half since 2005. Boston has lost nine of 12 overall. Phoenix is sliding in the West, having lost three straight. The first two, at Golden State and at the Clippers, were understandable. Not Wednesday's 110-101 home loss to Cleveland. Phoenix point guard Eric Bledsoe returned after missing 33 games and had 15 points and nine assists. The Suns played without forward P.J. Tucker due to suspension, but he'll be back.

Key trends: Phoenix is 8-2 ATS in its past 10 against teams with a losing record. The under is 7-0 in Boston's past seven following a double-digit loss at home.

Early lean: Phoenix will play desperate and cover.

Nuggets at Heat (-10, 214)

Miami looks tired as its 96-95 home loss to Brooklyn was the Heat's fourth in the past five games, and the offense is largely struggling. LeBron James had just 19 points against Brooklyn and hasn't had more than 23 since his career-high 61-point night on March 3. Denver ended a four-game road losing streak with a 120-112 win in Orlando on Wednesday, rallying from a 13-ponit deficit. Denver is pretty good when it reaches triple-digits but 2-24 this season when scoring less than 100 points. Miami beat Denver 97-94 on Dec. 30 in the Mile High City as James had 29 on his birthday.

Key trends: Denver is 0-6 ATS in its past six after a win. Under is 7-0 in Miami's past seven following a loss.

Early lean: Miami could be looking ahead to Sunday's big payback game against Houston. Denver it is. Love the under.

Trail Blazers at Pelicans (+3, 206.5)

The big news here is that Portland all-star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge almost certainly will not play after he landed hard on his back in Wednesday's 103-90 loss at San Antonio. X-rays were negative, but he could barely walk. The Blazers have lost a season-high four straight games and have allowed at least 103 points in each of them. New Orleans had a three-game winning streak snapped against Memphis on Wednesday, 90-88. Pelicans guards Tyreke Evans and Eric Gordon both sat out. Both were ill, not hurt, so could return for this one.

Key trends: New Orleans is 6-0 ATS in the past six meetings. The under is 9-2 in Portland's past 11 overall.

Early lean: Depends on Evans/Gordon. I like the Pelicans to win outright if they play.

Lakers at Spurs (-17.5, 227.5)

I thought oddsmakers might wait to see how destroyed the Lakers got on Thursday night in Oklahoma City before posting a line here. The big Lakers news this week was that not only will Kobe Bryant not return this season -- no surprise there -- but he reportedly won't play for Mike D'Antoni, either. Think L.A. regrets not hiring Phil Jackson when it had the chance? The Spurs have won eight straight and five of those by double-figures. Gregg Popovich probably will want to limit his starters' minutes here because it should be a cakewalk.

Key trends: The over is 8-0 in the Lakers' past eight in the second of a back-to-back. San Antonio is 1-4 ATS in its past five at home against teams with a losing record

Early lean: Lakers as the Spurs will empty the bench early. Thus hard to see reaching this total.

Clippers at Jazz (+8.5, 206.5)

Utah has lost seven of its past eight, and its only win doesn't count: last Saturday at Philadelphia. About the only bright spot of late has been rookie point guard Trey Burke, who has had back-to-back 20-point games for the first time in his career. Los Angeles is on an NBA-high nine-game winning streak despite playing five of those games without sixth man Jamal Crawford. He's not likely to be back here. Also news has come out that J.J. Redick may be officially shut down the rest of the year. Expect Blake Griffin to extend his franchise record of consecutive 20-point games to 25 in this one. He's averaging 32.5 points in two games against Utah this season.

Key trends: L.A. is 7-1 ATS in its past eight Friday games. The under is 6-0 in Utah's past six on Friday.

Early lean: Little bit of a letdown game for L.A. so Utah. The Clips rarely play well there.

Cavaliers at Warriors (-12, TBA)

Golden State's five-game winning streak ended in Wednesday's 111-98 loss at the Clippers. I'm guessing there's no total here because of Stephen Curry, who was limited to 29 minutes against the Clips because he's playing through a quad injury. Still, there is little doubt he will play. Actually it could be because Klay Thompson will sit it out because of a death in the family. He's averaging 17.9 points per game. The Cavs ended their four-game losing streak with a 110-101 win at Phoenix on Wednesday. Cleveland has won five of its past seven against the West. Golden State won 108-104 in overtime at Cleveland on Dec. 29. That was in the middle of the Warriors' season-high 10-game winning streak. Curry missed a triple-double by one rebound. The Warriors have won six straight in this series.

Key trends: Cleveland is 7-1 ATS in its past eight after a win. The over is 8-2 in Golden State's past 10 against teams with a losing record.

Early lean: Cavs should hang close without Thompson in there.

Friday, March 14

ACC tournament (Greensboro)
North Carolina had 12-game win streak snapped at Duke Saturday; they beat Pitt 75-71 (-3) at home Feb 15, holding on after leading by 12 with 8:23 left (NC was 15-25 on line). Tar Heels won first ACC tourney tilt in eight of last nine years, with only loss in season when they were 5-11. Pitt had stress-free win over Wake Thursday, just their second win in last eight conference tourney games since winning Big East in '08.

NC State had ball and lead twice in last minute at Syracuse, gagged away 56-55 loss Feb 15 (+13); Wolfpack never trailed by more than 3 points in game that Grant played for Orange. Syracuse had 1-5 skid, then won by 16 at Florida State Sunday with Grant back in lineup; they've won first tourney game eight of last ten years- this is new tournament though, a road game. State played three starters 32:00+ in win over Miami.

Big Dozen tournament (Indianapolis)
Minnesota/Wisconsin split two games this year; Gophers won 81-68 at home during Badgers' 1-5 meltdown, then lost 78-70 in Madison Feb 13, outscoring Gophers 30-15 on foul line. Minnesota played four subs 14+ minutes in typical Pitino-style Thursday; only two starters played 37+. Wisconsin won eight of last nine games, still has shot for a #1 seed next week- they're only 4-4 in first conference tourney game last eight years.

Atlantic 13 tournament (Brooklyn)
St Joe's lost its last two games after a 17-3 run spurred by rotation of six guys; Hawks beat Dayton twice this year, 60-57 on road, then 79-53 at home 17 days ago, when they made 9-15 from arc, led 39-20 at halftime in game that is Flyers' only loss in their last ten games. St Joe's won its first conference tourney game eight of last nine years; in year they lost, Hawks were 5-11 in league. Dayton used one guy more than 24:00 in an easy win yesterday.

VCU/Richmond are local rivals; Rams beat then twice this year, 81-70 at home, then 56-50 at Richmond eight days ago. VCU presses all over the court; Spiders lost star guard Lindsey after first meeting, plus they used three starters 31:00+ in yesterday's 76-64 win over Duquesne, ending a 4-game skid. Rams are 16-4 in last 20 conference tourney games; they've won last four games overall, with three of the wins by 11+ points.

SEC tournament (Atlanta)
Kentucky is an enigma, the least experienced team in country, but full of talent; they lost 87-82 at LSU Jan 28 (O'Bryant had 29), then beat them 77-76 in OT Feb 22, when O'Bryant was 8-25 from floor, but LSU led in last minute anyway. Tigers only used their bench 31:00 in that game. Tigers haven't won consecutive games since Feb 1; they used four guys 32:00+ yesterday. Wildcats lost three of last four games since LSU win.

Conference USA tournament (El Paso)
Southern Miss KO'd home team last night, so crowds here will be small rest of weekend; only one Golden Eagle played 30:00+. USM won only meeting with Louisiana Tech this year, 80-71 at home Jan 19, despite a 2-18 day from arc- they outscored Tech 28-14 on line. Bulldogs are on a 5-game win streak; they beat Charlotte easily Thursday; only two guys played more than 27:00. Eagles won their last six games, all by 8+.

AAC tournament (Memphis)
UConn dispatched home team last night, holding Memphis to 26% from floor, which should keep crowds to minimum here; Huskies used three starters 31:00+, but game was 41-27 at half, fairly stress-free- they split pair with Cincinnati this year, losing 63-58 on road, then winning 51-45 at home in rematch 13 days ago. Bearcats won 61-58 yesterday against UCF; they still played four substitutes double figure minutes.

Big X tournament (Kansas City)
Kansas beat Iowa State twice this year, 77-70 in Ames, then 92-81 in a Jan 29 rematch, when Jayhawks led by 16 early, then saw game 46-46 at half. Kansas is 20-2 in its last 22 tourney games, but they got taken to OT by Oklahoma State yesterday- they were down hoop with 1:32 left. Cyclones played three starters 35:00+ in 91-85 win over K-State, with Wildcats shooting 58% from floor. Kansas used three starters 41:00+.

Texas beat Baylor twice this year, 74-60 in Waco, then 74-69 at home 16 days ago; Longhorns crushed West Virginia last night, leading 35-14 at half- no Longhorn played more than 28:00. Baylor won five in a row, nine of last ten games; they're probably off bubble now- they're playing third day in row, and TCU game Wednesday was little more stressful than they would like- they outscored Sooners 23-5 on line Thursday.

Pac-12 tournament (MGM Las Vegas)
Colorado had huge win over Cal yesterday, they're 8-4 in last 12 games, won three of last four, with all three wins 59-56- they have to think they are in- they used four starters 32:00+ vs Cal. Without Dinwiddie, Buffs aren't good enough to bear Arizona- they lost 69-57 at Tucson, then got crushed 88-61 in rematch Feb 22. Wildcats won six of last seven games; they pummeled Utah yesterday, are playing for a #1 seed next week.

UCLA hammered Stanford 91-74 at home Jan 23, then lost rematch at Maples 83-74 Feb 22, when Adams/Anderson were held to total of 14 points. Bruins pulled away from red-hot Oregon in second half last nite, using only two guys more than 27:00- they shot 59.5% from the floor. Cardinal never trailed in 79-58 win over ASU last night, but they played Wednesday too; Dawkins still used three of his starters 33:00+.

Mountain West tournament (Las Vegas)
San Diego State beat UNLV twice this year, 63-52 at Viejas, then 73-64 here nine days ago, when Shrigley hit 4-5 from arc to rally Aztecs from down 5 early in second half (Roscoe Smith sat out that game for UNLV). Rebels are as good as their guards; DeSean-Jones/D.Smith are a combined 1-19 from arc in two games vs Aztecs. UNLV is 3-4 in last seven games. San Diego State held its last two opponents to a combined 87 points.

SEC Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 3

Missouri Tigers vs. Florida Gators (-11.5, 132)

The Tigers were unable to hold a nine-point lead late in regulation Thursday and also had a bad turnover that helped Texas A&M force the second overtime, but they used one of their strengths to survive, making a season-high 40-of-53 free throws.

The Gators were the first team to ever go 18-0 in SEC play, a run they capped with a rousing 84-65 win over rival Kentucky at home Saturday. Included in the unbeaten campaign was a 68-58 win over the Tigers on Feb. 4. Recently the Gators have been dominant, winning their last three games by an average of 21 points.

TRENDS:

* Missouri is 3-1-1 ATS in its last five neutral site games.
* Florida is 2-5 ATS in its last seven neutral site games.
* Over is 20-8 in Missouri's last 28 neutral site games.
* Under is 7-2 in Florida's last nine games following an ATS win.

Louisiana State Tigers vs. Kentucky Wildcats

Shavon Coleman had one of his best games of the season, recording 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the win over Alabama. Tim Quarterman came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting versus the Crimson Tide. The Tigers dished out 19 assists in their first game of the tourney and improved to 13-2 when recording 15 or more this season.

Julius Randle was named the SEC Freshman of the Year by the league's coaches and is the fifth straight Wildcat to earn the accolade. Randle, who also earned All-SEC First Team honors, leads the team in scoring (15.4), rebounding (10.5) and double-doubles (18), including four straight to finish the regular season. Willie Cauley-Stein was selected to the All-SEC Defensive Team after topping Kentucky in blocks (88), including a season-high nine on two different occasions.

Mississippi Rebels vs. Georgia Bulldogs

Marshall Henderson poured in 21 points, including seven 3-pointers, against Mississippi State. Henderson has knocked down at least one 3-point field goal in an SEC-record 65 consecutive games. Jarvis Summers continued his stellar play as he finished with 21 points, six assists and four rebounds versus the Bulldogs.

Charles Mann was named to the All-SEC Second Team after averaging 13.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game. Mann recorded his first career double-double when he posted 22 points and 10 rebounds in a 69-61 victory over LSU in the final game of the regular season. Kenny Gaines came on strong in the last month, tying Mann for the team lead in scoring (13.4) while finishing in double figures in his last seven outings.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Mississippi is 5-11 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
* Underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Under is 8-1 in Georgia's last nine games vs. the SEC.

Houston vs. Louisville

Grab this one now, because we think this line is going up. Anything under 20 represents value for Louisville (which is really amazing when you think about it) but this Louisville team is playing their best, most focused basketball of the season, as evidenced by their last two wins over UConn and Houston. They won these games by a combined 95 points! There are some coaches that don't take conference tournaments as seriously as others, but Rick Pitino was recently quoted that these are "very important" to him as a dress rehearsal for the Big Dance, and his career record backs that up. Tonight, the Cardinals train keeps rolling right through Houston, who is coming off an upset win over SMU in the quarterfinals yesterday. Louisville has beaten this team by 39 points and 15 points this season and this one will be equally as ugly. The Cards are 17-6 ATS in all neutral court games over the last 3 seasons and March apparently suits these Cardinals just fine, as evidenced by their back-to-back Final Fours and last year's national title. The Cards absolutely steamroll Houston tonight, who come down off the upset cloud! The Sharps say...

Joe Gavazzi early games with writeups:

CBKB

Florida St. vs. Virginia (-6-) Noon ET ESPN2

4% Virginia (-6-)

The only thing preventing this from being a Top of the Ticket play is the fine record of Florida St. under 12th year HC Hamilton whose teams are 112-66 ATS as dog to -1. It certainly is NOT the Florida St. bubblicious underdog role which has seen more participants bleed with need over the years. Besides, the dog role did not help the Sems when they took 5 in a 62-50 loss at C’ville, one of two 12 point defeats to the Cavs this year. Far more interested in backing No. 1 seed Virginia, who enters off a loss at Maryland last Sunday, thus ensuring full focus for this contest. No surprise that under HC Bennett, Virginia maintained their Defensive Dandy status all season long with numbers of 55/38/32 and their combination of +11.4 in rebound, TO, and Assist/TO margin. The experience of Harris and Mitchell are of key consideration. But, it is a young, emerging guard tandem of PG Perrantes and scoring guard Brogdon that has lifted the Cavs to the top of this loop. Expect this to translate to a double digit victory today.

Pitt vs. N. Carolina (-1) 2:30 ET ESPN2

3% N. Carolina (-1)

The Panthers used the momentum of their miracle OT win vs. Wake Forest last Saturday to make a statement in their opening game 84-55 victory against Wake on Thursday. But, the only thing keeping this from a higher rating is the record of 11th year Pitt HC Dixon in this role which finds his Panthers to be 46-23 ATS as dog to -1. Veteran Carolina HC Smith counters that with his own solid CPP (coaching personality profile) that finds his Tarheels’ teams to be 49-22 ATS following a loss. Last Saturday night, the Tarheels traveled to Cameron, where the Dookies got their revenge from an earlier 74-66 defeat. Yet, current form still suggests that Carolina is the play. That loss snapped a 12 game winning streak which has seen Carolina go 9-4 ATS. Along the way was a 75-71 victory vs. this Pitt team at the Smith Center. This streak has coincided with the return to the lineup of Leslie McDonald, who has eased the burden on the perimeter for PG Paige and made life a lot easier for interior forces, McAdoo, Tokoto and Meeks. Long-term concerns abound about the Tarheels’ ability from the arc and the stripe, another reason to be conservative in this rating.

Illinois vs. Michigan (-7) Noon ET ESPN

5% Michigan (-7)

Following a 75-55 victory vs. Penn St. on January 4th, the Illini stood 13-2 SU, 2-0 SU in Big 10 play. Then, the bottom fell out in a run that saw the Illini go 1-11 SU, 2-10 ATS. Miraculously, they turned it around with a 62-49 victory vs. Minnesota, February 19th. Since that time, they have gone 5-1 SU ATS, including upset wins at Minnesota, at Michigan St., at Iowa, and vs. Indiana yesterday (64-54). The key has been a defense that in 4 of those 6 games has held the opposition to 54 or less points. Now, the bad news for the Illini … their lone loss during this major turnaround was to this Michigan team by a wipeout score of 84-53. CCT handicapping theory is clear that the Illini’s 2 most recent upsets, including yesterday, combined with Michigan’s 5-0 SU streak to end the season (and maintain the No. 1 seed), is a bad omen for the Illini today.

St. Bonnie vs. St. Louis (-6) Noon ET NBCS

4% St. Louis (-6)

The Bonnie’s snapped a 0-4 SU, 0-5 ATS season-ending slide with an 82-72 victory against a LaSalle team who is the league’s biggest underachiever this year. So what! Today, it is a different animal and a very focused one. The Bills ended a 19 game winning streak when they beat GW (66-59) on February 21st. That led them to a 25-2 SU record with losses to only possible No. 1 seeds, Wisconsin and Wichita St. But, the bottom fell out with a 71-64 home loss to Duquesne (as -15). That keyed a 3 game losing streak before the Bills were able to turn things around with a season ending 64-62 road win at NCAA bound UMass. Consider that a buy sign for the most experienced team in the country with 5 senior starters. Under 2nd year HC Crews, the fundamentals installed by former HC Majerus have stuck like glue. Yet, St. Louis is rarely a margin team this season. It is not often that you see a 26-5 SU team with a 10-17 ATS mark. But, that is exactly what we have with SLU today, a reason why we get this huge discounted, value price. It will pay off for us in what I expect to be a double digit victory.

Dayton vs. St. Josephs (-1) 2:30 ET NBCS

3% St. Josephs (-1)

Dayton was good to us in their victory over Fordham yesterday closing out the Rams with an 87-74 win. Now, the Flyers remain on the precipice of the NCAA bubble with a closing season burst of 10-1 SU, 8-3 ATS. Following a 12-2 SU, 10-4 ATS run, St. Joes cooled down the stretch with a loss at GW and season-ending LHG embarrassment to underachieving Big 5 rival, LaSalle (71-73). Expect that to key a bounce back today against a Dayton team the Hawks defeated twice this season, by margins of 26 and 3 points.

S. Carolina vs. Tennessee (-10) 3:30 ET ESPNU

5% Tennessee (-10)

Following an 83-67 loss at Auburn on February 26th, the Gamecocks stood 10-18 SU for the season, 3-12 SU in the league. An improbable home upset of Kentucky sparked resurgence. Though it was followed by a loss to league leader, Florida, the Gamecocks have since spurted to a 3-0 SU ATS mark, all as underdog, covering by 43 points. Should we consider it a coincidence that this surge began at Mississippi St., when the tongue lashing of profanity administered by 2nd year HC Martin was a highlight of social media in recent days? But, handicapping theory is clear that 3 times is enough (upsets that is), especially when your next contest is in CCT play. Now, they must meet an opponent whose interior forces of Maymon and Stokes dominated the Gamecocks in an earlier meeting by a count of 72-53 on February 8th. The Vols have been ontheir own late season surge, as they have taken seriously the allegation that they remain on the bubble. Their last 3 games have been victories of 76-38 vs. Vandy, 82-54 at Auburn, and 72-45 to close the season vs. Missouri. Key difference from their opponent is that the Vols were favored in all those games. Please note that the Vols’ last 7 victories have all been by 16 or more points. Tennessee continues their ascent to the positive side of the bubble.

Game: Washington Wizards @ Orlando Magic
Time: Friday 03/14 7:05 PM Eastern
Pick: Washington -5 (-105) at 5Dimes

A lot was expected of the Washington Wizards this season. They have been a team that had struggled for years, but turned the corner a year ago. The Wizards have started to come on despite a pair of losses, as they are a robust 8-3 in their last 11 games. Their measure of success has been their road prowess that shows them at a nifty 15-1 ATS when taking to the road after a home game in their last 16. Without Dwight Howard, Orlando has fallen to the lower tier of the NBA. The Magic has lost four straight including a loss to the lowly Milwaukee Bucks - the NBA's worst team this season. The Wizards have dominated this team as they are 7-1-1 ATS and I see nothing to change that here. Play on Washington.

NBA ROAD WARRIOR PLAY

Washington Wizards (-5) at Orlando Magic 7:05 ET

4% Washington (-5)

Well aware that the Wizards are facing an Orlando team that has played far better at home recently than on the road. Nonetheless, the Magic enters today’s matchup with a recent record of 16-45 SU and 13-22 ATS. On a 4 game losing streak, with little to play for, the Magic have spit the bit on the defensive side of the ball, where in the last 10 games they are allowing 107/48. Now, they must face a Washington team who has been one of the NBA Road Warriors. For the season, the Wizards are 18-15 SU on the road, including 18-4 ATS as road favorite to +9 and a long-term 21-6 ATS as road chalk. Despite a pair of recent losses (Washington is 17-12 ATS following a defeat TY), the Wiz remain on a positive run of 8-3 SU. They have owned this Magic team of late winning 4 of 5, while covering 7 of 9. Make this 10* Road Warrior play your top investment of the day in the NBA.

Minnesota T-Wolves (-2) at Charlotte Bobcats 7:05 ET

3% Charlotte (+2)

Despite all hands on deck, Minnesota cannot put together a winning streak to propel them into playoff contention in the West. Even with the return of Pecovic and Martin, the point guard play of Rubio and the all-around excellence of Love, this team has covered just 1 of their last 5 games, while allowing 112 PPG. The Bobcats’ resurgence is for real. Witness the 98-85 road victory at upwardly mobile Washington on Wednesday. The Bobcats are now 12-7 SU ATS of late. As is true of many young emerging teams, the streaks often happen at home. It is here that Charlotte has won 7 consecutive games while recording a 10-1 ATS recent mark. With the inside/outside tandem of Jefferson and Walker leading the way, this victory will certainly not be a shock to this bureau.

Phoenix Suns (-5) at Boston Celtics 7:30 ET

3% Phoenix (-5)

All current NBA teams, who are .500 or better, are 188-129 ATS following a defeat. Thus, it is we feel comfortable lining up with Phoenix, who is 17-10 ATS following a defeat. Though the Suns have dropped 3 straight, the return of Bledsoe will be positive news for them, as they integrate their starting guard back into the lineup. The Suns continue to over achieve their 20 projected wins with a mark of 36-28. Yet, in the rugged Western Conference, they are still vying for playoff inclusion. The Suns have shined brightest on the road, where they are 20-9 ATS. This mark fits hand in glove with the similar inverted home/road dichotomy of Boston. The Celtics are just 8-14 ATS of late on the parquet and an under achieving 7-11 ATS as home dog this year. Even with the return of PG Rondo, the Cs have shown little upside since the All-Star break, going 3-9 SU, all part of their recent 9-26 SU slide. Play this super surger vs. towel tosser as the West continues to dominate the East at these short road prices.

CBKB

Florida St.

Minnesota vs. Wisconsin (-5) 6:30 ET BIG10

5% Wisconsin (-5)

The presses of Pitino, the younger, do not figure to bother the Badgers who turn it over only 8.2 times per game, among the best in the nation. This is Ryan’s most athletic team in his tenure with scoring options extending beyond the arc, along with the ability to drive and dish. Motivated by a season-ending loss at Nebraska, look for the Badgers to be playing for the Championship on Sunday and a potential No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big Dance. Defense, as always, is a staple for Ryan’s minions.

Richmond vs. VCU (-8-) 6:30 ET NBCS

4% VCU (-8-)

These two last met in a Richmond avenger in the Robins Center on March 6th. Richmond led virtually the entire game before havoc ensued down the stretch, resulting in a 56-50 series sweep. Though the Spiders rebounded from their 0-4 SU ATS regular season finish with a 76-64 blasting of Duquesne on Thursday, it is clear they are not the same team without best boy, Cedric Lindsay, the heart and soul of their team. Shaka Smart is on a typical 4-0 SU season ending run with a 10-3 SU ATS record since late January.

Ole Miss vs. Georgia (-1) 9:30 ET

3% Ole Miss (+1)

These teams are on the outside of the bubble looking in with the loser clearly not being offered an invitation to the Dance. Georgia has been one of the real surprise stories in the SEC with a record of 12-6 SU, 11-7 ATS. That includes an 8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS recent run, a 61-60 home court victory against this Ole Miss team, and a 69-61regular season-ending win at LSU. Yet, it is still not enough! We will opt for the Ole Miss Rebels, whose 2nd half super surge against rival Miss St. resulted in our 78-66 Top of the Ticket SEC Conference GOY winner. Back court tandem of Henderson and Summers a bit too prolific for the outmanned Georgia perimeter.

S. Mississippi vs. LA Tech (-2-) 6:30 ET CBSC

5% LA Tech (-2-)

LA Tech cruised (86-65 as -10) in our Top of the Ticket Conference USA GOY last night against outmanned Charlotte. Yet, this No. 1 seed continues to get little respect from the linemaker. Must back Tech and their Defensive Dandy status, a unit that allows just 66/40/29 and holds commanding positives in rebounding, TOs, and Assist/TO margin. Aside the fact this may well be a one-bid league, consider the motivation of 80-71 revenge for an earlier loss at Hattiesburg (where S. Miss was an undefeated 14-0 SU this season). Now on a neutral court and continuing to work injured star, Appelby, back into the lineup, look for the Bulldogs to ascend to the title game of the CUSA Championship.

Akron (-2) vs. W. Michigan 7:00 ET

5% Akron (-2)

Akron is a perennial champion in the MAC. Early in the season, the Zips had trouble fitting together the pieces under 10th year HC Dambrot. Now, the Zips are beginning to fire on all cylinders, as they enter this game on a 4-0 SU run scoring 83 points each in a pair of games against upper echelon league foes, Buffalo and Ohio. Along with that improved scoring, it is the defense that is a constant in this Akron program. Rarely do we see a time with a 21-11 SU mark struggle to a 10-18 ATS record. When we find one, it is time to take note of the value they offer. Such is the case today, as the Zips use the coaching experience of Hipsher, a solid defense, and an improving offense to get this victory against the No. 1 seed.

Houston vs. Louisville (-19) 7:00 ET ESPN2

3% Louisville (-19)

We often hear that March is referred to as Pitino time. It certainly was true last season when the Cards cut down the nets. A measure of that late season success is represented by this CPP (coaching personality profile) trend of Pitino, whose teams are 76-44 ATS following consecutive spread victories. It is an example of the way they blow through teams late in the season. Such has been the case in their most recent two games with victories over UConn (81-48) and Rutgers (92-31) on Thursday. Having already beaten Houston (91-52), they now catch the Cougars off an upset of a respected SMU team. It will make Louisville pay a bit of attention and roll to yet another 20 point victory against a Cougar team, who is unable to slow the pace.

Iowa St. vs. Kansas (-4) 7:00 ET ESPNU

3% Kansas (-4)

No Embiid? No matter! Frosh Wiggins has taken a leadership role, scoring 71 combined points in the last 2 games. Besides, this figures to be an open court affair, with the Cyclones preferring the 94 foot game. That resulted in a pair of Kansas victories in the regular season (92-81) and (77-70). The Iowa St. trio of PG Kane and interior forces, Niang and Ejim, are too much for most to handle. But, Kansas has athletic bigs that can float to the perimeter and shut down the arc. Kansas led by double digits against a desperate Oklahoma St. team yesterday. Yet, the Jayhawks showed enough poise to survive in OT by scoring the last 8 points in a 77-70 victory. That will hold them in good stead, if this game is close down the stretch.

San Diego St. (-4-) at UNLV 9:00 ET CBSC

4% San Diego St. (-4-)

You can allay your concerns about the Thomas and Mack Center. UNLV had an inverted home/road dichotomy this season, resulting in just a 3-7 ATS record at home in league play. Meanwhile, the Defensive Dandy status of San Diego St., who allows just 57/38/29, is reinforced by positives in the critical margins of rebounds, TOs, and Assist/TO margin. It resulted in a 13-2 SU road and neutral record for the Aztecs, including wins against Creighton, Marquette, and Kansas. Besides, road chalk in the CCT is a better than a 63% play when not facing a home team with the momentum of a 3-0 SU ATS streak. Aztecs showed they were hungry to win this event with a no-nonsense (73-39) blasting of Utah St. Consider that 15th year HC Fisher is a 67% play when allowing 50 or less points in the previous game and an 80% play coming off a win of 30 or more points. Having already defeated the Rebels (63-52) and (73-64) at this site, it is clear that the sweep is in order.

Cal Poly vs. Cal Irvine (-6-) 9:30 ET

4% Cal Irvine (-6-)

The Mustangs caught an overconfident Gaucho team and pulled a massive (69-38) upset against one of the best teams in the league. UCSB shot just 33%, while the Ponies had a +5 rebound margin and committed only 5 TOs. Armed with the knowledge of that outcome, do not expect the Anteaters to take Cal Poly for granted. Cal Irvine is the best interior team in the league, who figures to dominate the glass from start to finish against a Mustang team with a negative rebounding margin. In a pair of earlier victories against the Ponies, Irvine won 64-50 and 55-48, turning the defensive screws much as they did in our Top Play winner last night (63-43 as -11) against River. Knowing this is a one-bid league, top rated seeds always give a great effort in the semi-finals.

N. Colorado at Weber St. (-5-) 9:00 ET

3% Weber St. (-5-)

It is a down year for the Big Sky. Yet, Weber took command in the 2nd half of the season for a 14-6 SU league mark that garnered them the advantage of their strong home court. Though Weber was just 6-6 ATS at the Dee Events Center this season, under 8th year HC Rahe, the Wildcats are a dominant 58-39 ATS. Reinforcing that is the fact that in CCT play rested home teams following a victory are an 80% play. It was no contest when the Wildcats faced the Bears on this court this season, winning 79-65. Despite a pair of losses on this court, the Cats rarely lose here where they are 53-7 SU the previous 4 years. N. Colorado was a peripatetic team this season, whose fortunes were often tied to their shooting prowess. That regressed a bit down the stretch, as following a 13-4 SU start, the Bears finished on a 5-8 SU slide and just 4-9 ATS. Along the way have come some negative outings on the road, as they stand 0-3 ATS of late as road dog of 5 or more points with those losses by 14, 13, and 7 points. Must back Weber at home in this event.
