NCAA East Regional betting news and notes: Harvard's defense overrated?
By BRIAN COVERT

The Round of 32 opens in the East Regional Saturday. We look at the biggest betting news and notes coming out of that side of the bracket.

No. 4 Michigan State Spartans vs. No. 12 Harvard Crimson (+7, 137)

In 10 career meetings, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo is 7-3 versus Harvard’s Tommy Amaker (who coached the Michigan Wolverines from 2001-02 to 2006-07) winning by an average of 15.2 points.

Looking at the stats one would think the Crimson, the nation’s 15th-best defense this season, managed to find another notch against Cincinnati Thursday. But it may have been a case of the Bearcats just shooting terribly, going just 13 for 33 in the paint, getting just seven second-chance points on 15 offensive rebounds, and missing 13 dunks, layups, or tip ins.

No. 2 Villanova Wildcats (-3.5) vs. No. 7 Connecticut Huskies (+3.5, 132.5)

Senior guard Shabazz Napier was everything for the Huskies Thursday having a hand in 46 percent of Connecticut’s points after being involved in 36 percent of his team’s buckets in the team’s previous six games. However, Villanova prides itself on its on-ball pressure that seeks to contain quick, skilled ball handlers like Napier. In its opener Thursday, Villanova held UW-Milwaukee’s leading scorer to just six points on 1-for-15 shooting.

All week long, the Wildcats talked about getting off to fast starts. Yet, against UW-Milwaukee they started slowly, scoring just 18 points before going on a 9-0 run into the half at 27-23. It was the second slow start in a row for the Wildcats and a repeat performance could have dire consequences Saturday. Connecticut has the nation’s 33rd-best defense overall and the 23rd best second-half defense, holding teams to just 32.9 points in the game's second 20 minutes.

NCAA Midwest Regional betting news and notes: Michigan bullied on the glass
By CHASE RUTTIG

The Midwest Regional opens the Round of 32 Saturday. Before you place your wagers, scan these quick-hitting betting news and notes for the Midwest matchups.

No. 2 Michigan Wolverines vs. No. 7 Texas Longhorns (+5, 139)

Michigan will be favored heading into its second-round matchup when the Wolverines go up against the Texas Longhorns. However, the Wolverines may be feeling the impact of the season-ending injury of Mitch McGary for the first time in months. The Wolverines are 303rd in the nation in rebounding while the Longhorns are one of the NCAA's best interior teams at 41.4 rebounds per game - good for fourth in the nation.

Texas outworked a tough Arizona State squad on the boards in their opener, with 10 of its 30 rebounds coming on the offensive end. No offensive rebound was more important than Cameron Ridley's putback at the buzzer that gave the Longhorns the 87-85 win. Ridley finished with 12 rebounds to go along with 17 points.

No. 4 Louisville Cardinals vs. No. 5 St. Louis Billikens (+9, 133)

Saint Louis head coach Jim Crews hopes his Billikens can return to form at the free-throw line Saturday after going 12 for 26 from from the stripe in Thursday's opener against North Carolina State. Typically, Saint Louis shoots an average 70 percent from the line, and if it wants to stay with the defending national champions, the Billikens will have to improve from the charity stripe.

"We missed a ton of free throws tonight, and we missed some other opportunities both defensively and offensively, but I thought during the process it was pretty good," Crews said of Saint Louis performance Thursday. "We were getting what we wanted to get, but we weren't cashing in on it. I can't salute these guys enough in terms of how they just stayed with it."

NCAA South Regional betting news and notes: D will decide Pitt-Florida outcome

Eight teams remain in the South Regional portion of the NCAA tournament. Here's a look at Saturday's third-round matchups:

No. 9 Pittsburgh Panthers vs. No. 1 Florida Gators (-5, 124)

Fans hoping for a high-scoring shootout will likely disappointed; the Gators and their stifling press-heavy defense allowed the third-fewest points in the country heading into the tournament (57.9 per game), while the Panthers ranked 20th in the nation (61.9) and limited Colorado to 48 points in their tournament-opening 77-48 rout of the Buffaloes.

With both teams boasting potent half-court defenses, added emphasis will be placed on their ability to hit from outside - and judging by their performances in their respective tournament openers, that could prove daunting. The Gators shot just 4-for-12 from 3-point range in an unimpressive win over Albany, while the Panthers were just 4-of-14 in their one-sided victory over Colorado.

No. 11 Dayton Flyers vs. No. 3 Syracuse Orange (-6.5, 128)

The Flyers are one of the few teams in the tournament not shy about rotating as many as 11 players in a given game; they did just that in their tournament-opening 60-59 upset of Ohio State, and it caught the attention of Syracuse assistant coach Mike Hopkins. "They played 11 guys, they've got a lot of depth, they kept rotating guys in and out," Hopkins told the Syracuse Post-Standard.

The Orange do have some familiarity with the Flyers: star guard Tyler Ennis played with Dayton guard Dyshawn Pierre for CIA Bounce of the AAU. Ennis' dad was the head coach. "I'm kind of familiar with his game," Ennis said of Pierre, who had three free throws down the stretch to help the Flyers eliminate the Buckeyes. "He's one of the most underrated players in the country. He always hits big shots."

NCAA West Regional betting news and notes: Homecourt for Badgers
By COLIN KELLY

The West Regional kicks off the Round of 32 Saturday. Check out these quick-hitting betting news and notes before placing your wagers on the West side of the bracket.

No. 12 North Dakota State Bison vs. No. 4 San Diego State Aztecs (-3, 125.5)

North Dakota State has only been in Division I since 2004, but the Bison have slayed a few dragons, with the biggest coming in Thursday’s 80-75 overtime upset of Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament’s West Regional. NDSU’s first huge win came at Wisconsin in January 2006. The Bison then won at Marquette in December 2006, and in nonconference play this year, they stunned host Notre Dame. San Diego State – a 3-point favorite, just like Oklahoma – will have its hands full in Saturday’s Round of 32.

San Diego State knows this scenario all too well. Just a year ago, in the Round of 64, the Aztecs beat Oklahoma – the same team North Dakota State stunned on Thursday night – and it appeared No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast did San Diego State a huge favor by shocking No. 2 seed Georgetown. Instead, FGCU became the first No. 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16 by bouncing the Aztecs 81-71 in the Round of 32. Another year, another Cinderella opponent for SDSU.

No. 7 Oregon Ducks vs. No. 2 Wisconsin Badgers (-5, 142)

Wisconsin’s defense could be a huge key today, based on a stat thrown out on Twitter by Jim Polzin, Badgers beat writer for the Wisconsin State Journal. In Wisconsin’s 75-35 blowout of No. 15 seed American Thursday, the Eagles averaged a meager 0.61 points per possession. Polzin noted that was a season low by a Badgers opponent. Wisconsin, meanwhile, averaged more than twice that at 1.29 points per possession, including 1.48 in the second half.

The Badgers will have a huge homecourt advantage playing in Milwaukee Saturday, a fact not lost at all on Oregon coach Dana Altman. Steve Mims, Oregon basketball beat writer for the Eugene Register-Guard, tweeted out Altman’s thoughts: “We basically have a road game. They’ll have 20,000 fans cheering, we will have 300.”

Oregon pounded Brigham Young 87-68 laying 4.5 points in Thursday’s Round of 64. But that’s not the only momentum the Ducks carry into today’s tilt with Wisconsin. As Steve Mims of the Oregon Register-Guard tweeted out, Thursday’s win marked the first time in school history that the Ducks have won a game in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments.

NCAA games

Syracuse is playing couple hours from home in Buffalo, its an arena, not a dome, so their home court edge is even bigger here. Orange stumbled to 3-5 finish after being 25-0 at one point, but having Grant back in lineup opens up shots for Cooney and makes Syracuse potent on offense. Dayton is 4-6 vs top 50 teams; they've won 11 of last 13 games overall, are off dramatic win vs in-state rival Ohio State that had refused to play them. Flyers beat Ga Tech by 10, its only game with an ACC opponent. Over last four years, #11 seeds are 5-3 vs spread in this round. Last five years, second round favorites of 6+ points are 20-13-1 vs spread.

Villanova was 1-19 from arc before hitting three of last four vs Milwaukee in first round; Wildcats won four of last five second round games- they beat UConn 70-61 LY in last Big East meeting, ending 4-game series skid. Over last nine years, favorites are 8-11-1 vs spread in 2-7 second round games. UConn needed OT to beat St Joe's Thursday, despite making 11-24 on arc; Boatright/Napier both played 42:00 vs St Joe's; three others played 30:00+. Last five years, second round favorites of 6+ points are 20-13-1 vs spread. UConn won six of last seven first round games, but those with Calhoun as coach- Thursday was Ollie's first tournament win.

Pitt crushed shorthanded Colorado Thursday; Panthers are 1-3 in last four second round games, and weren't underdog in any of them, losing by 11-1-3 points. Over last five years, #1 seeds are 12-7-1 vs spread in this round. Florida was tested by Albany for 30:00 Thursday; Gators beat Florida State by point in only game vs ACC team. Panthers didn't play an ACC team but they also played Albany and beat Danes by same 12 points that Florida did. Over last six seasons, second round favorites of 6 or less points are 30-20 vs spread. Florida hasn't lost since Dec 2 vs UConn. #1 seeds are 33-3 SU in this round the last nine years.

Defending champ Lousiville was tested in fierce struggle with Manhattan Thursday, tough game for Pitino against old friend. Cardinals won 12 of last 13 games, face offensively-challenged Saint Louis squad that rallied to beat NC State after being down 16 with 8:13 to go- they lost four of last six games after being 25-2 at one point; nine of last ten games were decided by 7 or less points. Over last six years, second round favorites of 8+ points are 15-10-1 vs spread. Billikens are very good at defending arc (29.1%, #3) Billikens have edge in experience; they're 8-5 vs top 100 teams, 19-1 vs everyone else.

Over last nine years, favorites are 8-11-1 vs spread in 2-7 second round games. Wisconsin is 17-12 in NCAA tourney under Ryan, but 13 of 17 wins were against teams seeded 10th or lower; Badgers had 40-5 run vs American Thursday; they won 10 of last 12 games. Oregon won eight of last nine games, getting beat by UCLA in Pac-12 tourney; Ducks beat Illinois 71-64 on December, its only game vs Big Dozen opponent this season. Wisconsin is #2 in country at protecting ball, turning it over only 12.6% of time. Ducks are 13-0 outside Pac-12; they're 4-0 in OT games this season.

Michigan State is finally healthy, winning last four games after going 5-7 in last dozen regular season games; Spartans beat Columbia by 9 back in November, its only game vs Ivy foe. Harvard beat Cincinnati, lost by 5 at UConn in its only top 50 games. #12 seeds covered five of their last six second round games when facing a #4 seed. Crimson made 38.8% on arc this season (#26 in US); they were only 6-17 from arc vs Cincinnati, but all seemed to come in key spots when Bearcats were making runs at them. Spartans have lot of depth because of all the injuries they've had; they're average defending the 3, but Harvard won't push them around.

North Dakota State won its last ten games and 24 of last 27; they've got #23 team in country in experience here, starting three seniors and junior- they won at Notre Dame before Grant got hurt, but they also lost by 17 at Ohio State, 13 at St Mary's, 1 at home to Southern Miss. Aztecs won seven of last eight games, losing to Lobos in Mountain West tourney in Vegas; they don't shoot ball especially well, but after losing in this round to Florida Gulf Coast LY, they won't be overlooking Bison. #12 seeds covered five of their last six second round games when facing a #4 seed. Bison were down 4 with 0:38 left vs Oklahoma, rallied for unlikely win.

Beilein vs Barnes is immense tactical mismatch. Michigan lost by 7 at Iowa State in its one game vs Big X opponent. Texas is 6-6 in its last 12 games; biggest indictment I can think of them were last five points they scored vs Arizona State, getting rebounds off missed shots, neither of which hit rim- they got lucky. Longhorns lost by 14 to Michigan State in its one Big Dozen game- they're 2-4 in last six NCAA tourney games, with all four losses hy 5 or less points- they do not have senior in their rotation, are 12-2 outside Big X. Both these teams are in bottom 20 in country in terms of experience. Michigan is 8-1 in last nine games, 20-4 in last 24 games overall.

Other games
Louisiana Tech won seven of last eight games; they're 4-3 in last seven true road games. Georgia won its last six home games; its last home loss was Jan 29 to Vandy; Dawgs won four of last games overall.

Fort Wayne won six of last seven games, losing to North Dakota State by 3 in Summit final; Mastadons won last three true road games- they're #19 in country, making 39.1% from arc. VMI scored 84+ points in its last five wins, 78 or less in last four losses.

Wright State won seven of last eight games, losing Horizon final at home to Milwaukee; Raiders split pair of 3-point decisions with MAC teams this season. Ohio split pair of games with Horizon teams, beating Valpo by 4, losing at Oakland by 17.

Yale lost four of last six games but edged Quinnipiac by point at home in last game; Bulldogs won by 3 at Lafayette in its only games with Patriot League foe. Holy Cross split pair of games with Ivy League opponents.

Columbia won four of last five home games; Lions are 11-6 in non-Ivy games. Eastern Michigan won seven of its last nine games, but lost last three true road games. Columbia makes 37.7% of its 3's, which helps going against Syracuse-like 2-3 zone.

San Diego tied for 6th in down year in WCC; Toreros are last team that beat Gonzaga- they lost six of last nine true road games. Sam Houston won five of last six games- they lost to SF Austin in Southland final, after finishing third during regular season.

Corpus Christi finished 2nd in Southland; they've won eight of last nine games overall. Islanders won their last five home games. Pacific has all five starters back from LY but went 6-12 in first year in WCC, which is lot stronger than Big West, their old league.

The Cardinals got more of a scare than they would have liked in their first NCAA game as Manhattan took them to the wire, while the Billikens had a magical comeback that ended in an overtime win over NC State. We have had the opportunity to see both of these teams plays a lot this season. We are based in Kentucky, so we see Louisville play a lot, but we also closely watch the A10 so have seen plenty of St. Louis. The Billikens started off the season red hot but really struggled down the stretch...we were surprised they were even able to beat the Wolfpack on Thursday. The Cardinals were probably the hottest team in the country coming into the tourney, so they are playing great basketball right now. As you may know, Manhattan coach Steve Massiello was Pitino's lead assistant at Louisville and played for him at UK. According to several folks that watched the Louisville-Manhattan game, they said Massiello was yelling out the plays Louisville was going to run before they even got over half court! The point is that we don't think you should put too much stock into the close win the other night. Now St. Louis is a very good defensive team, but where they are going to struggle in this game is the speed and quickness of the guards. Jordair Jett is a really good player for St. Louis, but he's simply not quick enough to stay with Russ Smith from Louisville. The Cards are 20-7 ATS in all neutral court games over the last 3 seasons and 14-3 ATS in March games over the last 2 seasons. We think with a normal start time and a game under their belt, you will see a focused, solid effort from Louisville that leads to a double-digit win. The Sharps say...

Stephen Nover's NCAA TOURNAMENT PLAY OF THE YEAR!!

Oregon plus 5 vs. Wisconsin Wisconsin scores more this season, but its defense has slipped. The Badgers have been hurt more than most teams by the new rule that limits physical play. That's the style Bo Ryan has taught his Badgers, who lost three of their best defenders last year. The Badgers are vulnerable against fast-paced teams, who can knock down the 3-pointer plus get to the hoops and hit their free throws. Oregon has those traits. The Ducks ranked No. 8 in scoring, 31st in 3-point percentage and sixth in free throw percentage. The Ducks have three good guards - Joseph Young, Johnathan Loyd and Jason Calliste. I don't see the Badgers slowing all three down. The Badgers are not fast enough or athletic enough to keep up with Oregon, whose run-and-shoot style produces layups and open 3-pointers. The line is a bit inflated because of Wisconsin's 75-35 first-round blowout win against American. The Badgers are 2-6 ATS the past eight times following a point spread cover. Oregon is 8-1-1 ATS the past 10 times when playing at a neutral site.

ESPN Insider, done today with Sportsinsights software:

No. 3 Syracuse Orange versus No. 11 Dayton Flyers

LVH Line: Syracuse minus-6.5
PickCenter consensus pick

Dayton's upset win over Ohio State on Thursday was a clear demonstration of why the Flyers are a team I'm in no rush to bet against. Archie Miller's squad didn't ride any hot shooters, nor did they dominate the glass or force turnovers in bunches. Yet they covered wire-to-wire, and Vee Sanford hit the winning layup in the closing seconds, the last of 15 lead changes. The Flyers showed toughness and resiliency throughout.

I worry about a Dayton letdown after a huge win over a team it was dying to play and matched up well against. Coach Jim Boeheim's trademark matchup zone has been giving unfamiliar opponents fits all season, and the Orange will enjoy plenty of crowd support in Buffalo in a venue where their struggling offense shot 49 percent from the floor in their opener.

ATS pick: Syracuse

No 2. Villanova Wildcats versus No. 7 Connecticut Huskies

LVH line: Villanova -3.5
PickCenter consensus pick

Villanova went 21-9 ATS during the regular season, a dramatically undervalued commodity for extended stretches. And the Wildcats covered the spread once again in Thursday's 20-point win over plucky Wisconsin-Milwaukee thanks to a 12-2 late-game run-out in the final 4:30. Coach Jay Wright's squad has done that repeatedly this year, extending margins in the latter stages of games that were competitive early.

But there's a solid case to be made for UConn here. The Huskies are getting great guard play from Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright on a consistent basis. They hit 90 percent from the free throw line to beat Saint Joseph's, and coach Kevin Ollie's squad was quite adept at hanging tough against quality foes (with the notable exception of Louisville) all season. Expect a tight game.

ATS pick: Connecticut

[+] EnlargeBilly Donovan
AP Photo/Jessica HillBilly Donovan and Florida, despite a lackluster first game, shouldn't have trouble with Pittsburgh.
No. 1 Florida Gators versus No. 9 Pittsburgh Panthers

LVH line: Florida minus-5
PickCenter Consensus Pick

Pittsburgh backers enjoyed a true "rocking chair" game in the Panthers' opener against Colorado, the SU and ATS outcome fully determined before halftime. Florida backers spent the game swearing at their TV sets as the Gators never pulled away from Albany despite outshooting the Great Danes 51 percent to 39 percent, the type of percentage that often results in blowouts.

All it takes is one game for a bandwagon to shift completely at this time of year. Pitt is likely to garner market support, while bettors who lost with the Gators will be in no rush to get back to the betting window in support of them again. Amazingly, this nine-loss Panthers team has been an underdog only twice all season (versus Virginia and North Carolina) failing to win or cover either game. I'm not expecting the third time to be a charm in a game where Florida should flex its collective muscle.

ATS pick: Florida*

No. 4 Louisville Cardinals versus No. 5 Saint Louis Billikens

LVH line: Louisville -9
PickCenter consensus pick

I'm not going to disparage the Billikens' win over NC State, but let's be real -- the Wolfpack lost that game more than Saint Louis won it, missing 11 free throws in the final three minutes of regulation and the game-tying free throw attempt in the final minute of overtime. Saint Louis played well enough down the stretch to take advantage of its opportunity, but it will be hard-pressed to match its excellent shooting and lack of turnovers from Thursday's affair.

Coach Rick Pitino probably got what he wanted out of the Cardinals' tighter-than-expected win over Manhattan. His team survived and advanced, while getting a real wake-up call in a game against a former assistant who knew everything that Louisville wanted to do, and had effective countermeasures. Saint Louis is a "high basketball IQ" team, but I don't think it has the countermeasures for Louisville's length, athleticism or hunger following a subpar showing.

ATS pick: Louisville*

No. 2 Wisconsin Badgers versus No. 7 Oregon Ducks

LVH line: Wisconsin minus-5
PickCenter consensus pick

Wisconsin is laying an extra couple of points in this matchup because of its proximity to home at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. The Badgers certainly didn't need much help in a near-perfect showing in their opener against outclassed American University. They'll need help here against Dana Altman's Ducks.

Oregon has come on like a freight train down the stretch, riding 9-1 SU and 10-2-1 ATS hot streaks into Saturday. The Ducks have been cashing tickets as underdogs repeatedly during that span, pulling off a pair of outright upsets and losing a pair of games by a single bucket in spread-covering fashion. They are an excellent 3-point shooting team, but hit just 2-of-13 in their blowout over BYU. If Oregon can get going from beyond the arc in this one, the Badgers are on upset alert.

ATS pick: Oregon*

No. 2 Michigan Wolverines versus No. 7 Texas Longhorns

LVH line: Michigan -5
PickCenter consensus pick

The Longhorns' performance in their opener against Arizona State was a true microcosm of their inconsistent season. Coach Rick Barnes' squad isn't short on size, depth or talent. It is, however, short on maturity, a very young squad that came unglued down the stretch of an intense tournament game, and lucky to escape with the buzzer-beating two-point win.

That lack of poise and maturity is clearly problematic against the savvy Wolverines, who are 6-1 ATS in their past seven NCAA tournament games -- the lone spread loss coming in last year's national title game against Louisville. But Michigan's biggest struggles this season have come against opponents that are big enough to control the glass and prevent easy looks in the paint -- teams like Texas.

ATS pick: Texas

No. 4 Michigan State Spartans versus No. 12 Harvard Crimson

LVH line: Michigan State minus-7
PickCenter consensus pick

The Crimson were far from perfect in their opener on Thursday. They missed free throws, committed turnovers and struggled mightily on the defensive glass. But Tommy Amaker's squad was able to hold off a Cincinnati charge despite making only three shots in the final 12 minutes of the game thanks to an impressive defensive effort and a lot of grit and guile. The Crimson pulled off a first-round upset over New Mexico last year before suffering a 23-point beatdown when they faced Arizona in the Round of 32. I think they'll be a good notch or two more competitive this year, even as they step up in class against the Spartans.

Adreian Payne's 41-point effort got all the headlines as Michigan State beat Delaware, but he wasn't alone. Tom Izzo's squad hit 53.6 percent from the floor, 52.6 percent from 3-point range and 92 percent from the free throw line. Yet despite those impressive shooting numbers, the Spartans still couldn't build any point spread margin. That tells me that whatever "value" Michigan State had in the betting markets at the start of March is largely gone by now.

ATS pick: Harvard

No. 4 San Diego State Aztecs versus No. 12 North Dakota State Bison

LVH line:San Diego St. -3.5
PickCenter consensus pick

I cashed in with North Dakota State on Thursday Night, and I'm quite comfortable getting right back to the betting window in support of the Bison here. Yes, they needed a 3-pointer from Lawrence Alexander in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime, but the Bison are a great offensive team -- the single best shooting team in the entire country this year -- and are capable of hitting tough, pressure-filled shots.

San Diego State collapsed down the stretch against New Mexico State, much to the chagrin of the many bettors who had the Aztecs (or the Under) in that ballgame. They were able to grind out the win in overtime, but the performance reinforced my doubts about Steve Fisher's team. Unlike North Dakota State, San Diego State doesn't get anything easily on the offensive end of the court, and their biggest weakness all year was matching up against teams that have ample low post size -- teams like the Bison.

ATS pick: North Dakota State

Tuley's Take on Saturday's top matchups

Connecticut Huskies versus Villanova Wildcats

The great thing about the NCAA tournament is that, thanks to filling out so many brackets, I've already looked at later matchups. I had UConn advancing past Villanova in most of my brackets because I felt they matched up very well despite being a No. 7 seed against a No. 2 seed. Their top guard tandem of Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright will be able to beat Villanova at its own pressing game.

Watching Thursday's games didn't change my opinion at all, as I liked how UConn battled back in its game with Saint Joseph's that it very well should have lost. Villanova's performance, despite pulling away late to cover the 16.5-point spread, left a lot to be desired as the Wildcats struggled to put a much less talented Milwaukee team away.

ATS pick: UConn*

North Dakota State Bison versus San Diego State Aztecs

I had a great day Thursday, but the one that got away was not having North Dakota State against Oklahoma. I went into the game thinking the Sooners were the better, more-balanced team, but I came away believing that the win by the Bison was far from a fluke. They have the look of a Sweet 16 Cinderella.

On the other hand, San Diego State didn't impress (maybe I was a little biased since I had New Mexico State plus the points). A lot of what I observed in these two teams was about shot selection: I saw why NDSU led the nation in field-goal percentage while San Diego State often struggled to get off good shots.

ATS pick: North Dakota State*

Best bets from PJ Walsh

Syracuse Orange (minus-6.5) over Dayton Flyers

Using our Bet Labs software, we analyzed the Round of 32 in the NCAA tournament and found that since 2005, all favorites are 76-64 (54.3 percent) ATS. Digging deeper, the ATS win rate improves to 57.1 percent when focusing only on favorites of greater than five points. This make sense from a betting theory perspective as the Round of 32 includes quick, two-day turnarounds for teams coming off wins in the Round of 64.

Because there's little time to prepare and game plan, teams potentially rely more heavily on talent alone, giving the advantage to teams "expected" to be better than their opponents. Furthermore, we're still early enough in the tournament where the difference in talent between opponents is noticeable enough to see a handful of favorites that fit our analysis, like Syracuse at minus-6.5. Because of this, we'll lay the points and take the Orange.

Michigan State Spartans (minus-7) over Harvard Crimson

There's no question that Michigan State has talent and, after suffering from the injury bug throughout the regular season, the Spartans are finally healthy and poised for a deep tourney run. Since our Round of 32 betting theory is based on the idea that talent rules on short rest, it makes sense that our system points towards Michigan State as a team offering value.

So, for the same reasons we like Syracuse above, we'll grab Michigan State at minus-7 in this game.

#517 Dayton Flyers +7 (7:10 edt)

The knee jerk reaction is to go against Dayton off of the big upset win but the Flyers have been very strong on the road this season and they get to take on a Syracuse team that has struggled down the stretch of the season covering only 2 of their last 9 games. Also the Orangemen are only 3-14 ATS against Atlantic 10 teams. Take the Flyers and the points here as the play of the day.

Dr. Bob opinions … He also has 3 best bets.
Harvard (+7 ½) over Michigan State
05:40 PM Pacific Rotation: 529
Michigan State is certainly better now that they’re healthy, as my rating on the Spartans with all their starters playing is 1 ½ points higher than their overall season rating. Even with that being the case my current ratings favor Michigan State by 6 ½ points (and 139 total points), so the line has certainly been adjusted. Harvard is a solid team and shoots the ball well from 3-point range (38.8%), which is necessary to beat a Michigan State team that defends the paint very well (43.7% allowed on 2-point shots). The Spartans aren’t particularly good defending the 3-point arc (33.4% allowed is better than average but ranks 120th in the nation) so Harvard should have some open looks and the Crimson will keep this game competitive if they can knock down a good percentage of their 3-pointers. The real reason for liking Harvard is a 6-26-2 ATS letdown 2nd round NCAA situation (I still refer to this round as the 2nd round) that applies to Michigan State and that angle is just 1-13 ATS when applying to favorites of 6 points or more. I’ll consider Harvard a Strong Opinion at +7 points or more and a lean at less than +7.
Villanova (-3 ½) over Connecticut
06:40 PM Pacific Rotation: 520
Connecticut needs to this their 3-point shots to stay close in this game and Villanova’s mediocre 3-point defense will give them a chance. However, the strength of the Connecticut team is their 2-point defense, which ranks 9th in the nation at 41.9%, and that strength isn’t going to have its normal impact against a Villanova team that is 8th in the nation in the number of 3 point shots taken as a percentage of overall shots. The Wildcats are also very efficient in their 2-point shots (54.2% ranks 10th in the nation), so they should be able to score near the basket at a decent rate. Overall the matchup favors Villanova a bit and my ratings favor the Wildcats by 5 points (with a total of 132 points). I’ll lean with Villanova at -4 or less and I’d consider the Wildcats a Strong Opinion at -3 or less.
Michigan (-4 ½) vs. Texas
02:15 PM Pacific Rotation: 528
I don’t see much of an edge here, as my ratings favor Michigan by 4 points. Texas should have relative success offensively, as 74% of the Longhorns’ shots are 2-point attempts (67% is average) and Michigan is bad in 2-point defense (50.4% ranks 237th in the nation) while defending the 3-point arc well (31.2%), which doesn’t do them as much good against a team like Texas. Michigan’s offense should also be relatively better, as the Wolverines take a lot of 3 point shots (40% of their FG attempts) and Texas is mediocre defending the 3-point line while being very good in 2-point defense. My math projects 140 ½ total points but the matchup adds 3 points to that total, so I’ll lean over 142 points or less and I have no opinion on the side.
San Diego State (-4) vs North Dakota State
03:10 PM Pacific Rotation: 532
My ratings favor San Diego State by 4.2 points (with a total of 127 points), which doesn’t offer much line value, and North Dakota State matches up pretty well with the Aztecs. San Diego State is mostly an interior team offensively, as 75% of their shots are 2-point attempts (67% is average), and that works well for an NDSU defense that is horrible defending the 3-point line (37.7% allowed) but pretty good defending inside the arc (46.1% ranks 85th in the nation). So, the Aztecs aren’t likely to take full advantage of the defensive weakness of the Bison. I think 3 ½ points is a good line and I have no opinion on this game.

Pick 520 Villanova -3.5 (-110) 5dimes vs 519 UConn

Analysis: UConn vs. Villanova (-3-) 9:40 ET TBS Buffalo, NY 3* Villanova (-3-) With tough losses yesterday within (3) points, we come right back today. My Top (3) Saturday winners in Saturday Night Action! UConn was fortunate to get their Round 1 victory (89-81) in OT against St. Joes. They allowed the offensively potent Hawks to shoot 52% from the field. Credit the Huskies with knocking down 11/24 from the arc and a 13/9 Assist/TO ratio. But, the deciding factor came when Kanacevic fouled out in OT and UConn went on to convert 15 consecutive foul shots. That begs for reversal against a Villanova team, who cruised to a 20 point win against Wisc.-Mil with a big 2nd half. The Wildcats did so, despite just knocking down 4/23 from the arc. Their underrated defense and rebounding were the difference with a +9 margin on the boards and holding the Panthers to 39% from the field. Balanced scoring saw 5 Wildcats score in double figures. In a reprise of many classic Big East wars, must favor Villanova to use that underrated defense and rebounding, and better balanced scoring, along with the experience veteran coaching experience of Wright vs. Ollie to garner this victory.

CBB 5* San Diego State -3 vs. North Dakota State 6:10PM EST

The College card for Saturday night has produced another solid Black Label Best Bet. North Dakota State off their upset victory over the Sooners has them now facing a very stingy defensive minded San Diego State team. North Dakota State defeated Oklahoma because the Sooners defense is inconsistent and average at best while the team they face tonight certainly believes in defending the basket. Just look at some of the teams they faced this season and what they allowed them to score. New Mexico scored 58 and 48, Marquette 59, UNLV 64, 52, 51, Boise State 66, 65 and Kansas 57 points. NDS has a decent presence in the paint but they are not nearly as athletic as SDS especially at the forward and guard positions as SDS has size and speed. Their ability to defend is evident in their holding opponents to 28 percent from behind the arc. Overall San Diego State allows 58 points per game and a meager 39 percent shooting from the floor. North Dakota State is coming off the biggest win in school history and now faces a team that was taken into overtime after having led by double-digits at the half. Not a recipe for success as this is a perfect flat spot for NDS and a perfect attention getting contest for SDS. We expect San Diego State to be completely focused on the task at hand which means grab a big lead and never look back. The BTPR Index projects a point advantage of 8.8 points. The BBMM projects a point differential of 6.84 points with a current line range of -3 to -5. The SIM Matrix projects a 73.5 percent against the spread advantage in tonight's contest. The Pace - Tempo Matrix has San Diego State with a Transitional number of 41.39 with a conversion rate range 45.2 to 48.95 percent. With solid situations favoring San Diego State along with a huge edge in all primary index averages we will lay the short price here as San Diego State gets the win and advances. Lay the points

NCAA Round 2

Dayton vs. Syracuse (-6-) 7:10 ET TBS Buffalo, NY

4% Syracuse (-6-)

Linemaker did not give Dayton much credit for their victory, which was balanced out by the return to form of the Orange. But Round of 32 handicapping is clear on the letdown factor for the Flyers. That’s even more likely to happen based on the fact it was Big Brother Ohio St. and by the nature of the win. The very intense Flyers now enter tonight’s game on runs of 11-2 SU and are 8-2 ATS as underdog this season. In a Top Play Winner with Syracuse on Thursday, I accurately predicted the return to form of a Syracuse team, who entered the Tourney on a slide of 2-5 SU, 1-5 ATS. But the week off seemed to rejuvenate Syracuse, who held a +20 edge on the boards and used their vaunted 2-3 zone to hold W. Michigan to 35% from the field. The Orange placed 4 in double figures, each of whom scored 14 or more points. Also, cannot ignore a site just 150 miles from the Carrier Dome home of Syracuse. This type of site advantage has translated into 60% winners in the last 3 decades. Hope that Boeheim does not sit on the lead with under 5 to go, as he is prone to do.

UConn vs. Villanova (-3-) 9:40 ET TBS Buffalo, NY

4% Villanova (-3-)

UConn was fortunate to get their Round 1 victory (89-81) in OT against St. Joes. They allowed the offensively potent Hawks to shoot 52% from the field. Credit the Huskies with knocking down 11/24 from the arc and a 13/9 Assist/TO ratio. Pittsburgh vs. Florida (-5) 12:15 ET CBS Orlando, FL

4% Florida (-5)

The improbable regular season-ending win at Clemson, (down 5 with 13 seconds to go) 83-78 in OT, has kick started a late season surge by the Panthers that has seen them go 4-1 SU, 5-0 ATS. In those 4 victories, the offense has come to life, scoring 81 PPG. Yet, it is their lone loss in that timeframe (51-48) to Virginia, which saw them return to their struggling offensive ways. Such will be the case again today against the lock-down defense that is Florida. Respect is accorded to Pitt and HC Dixon for the 45-22 ATS record of dog to -1. Strongly emphasizing defense and rebounding, that record makes a lot of sense. But, it is Dixon’s priority on the fundamentals which makes his teams a standout in this role. Consider the stats from their 77-48 romp of Colorado. Not only did they outshoot the Buffs 51 to 36%, but Pitt had an 18/3 Assist/TO margin, while Colorado had a 5/17 ratio. Those numbers alone will win you a lot of basketball games. Today, however, they face the No. 1 team in the nation, a senior-dominated Florida team who vastly underperformed in Game 1. Despite the 67-55 win against outmanned Albany, HC Billy D. was clearly upset with his team after the game. Yet, it was Florida’s 27th consecutive win, lifting them to 33-2 SU for the season. The Gators again relied on their tough defense in that win, which allowed Albany just 39% from the field. Zanna will be hard-pressed to replicate his sterling numbers of late against the interior of Young, Yeguette, and Prather. Though PG Robinson has been a stabilizing force for the Panthers, he is clearly outclassed at that position by Scotty (Prince) Wilbekin. While Florida’s defense will make stopping Patterson of the Panthers a priority, Frazier has the potential to knock down multiple triples with Pitt being forced to focus on interior defense. Panthers are seldom blown out, but this could be an example. Playing at an Orlando based site, not far from the Gator’s home, continues to be a 60% pointspread advantage the last 3 decades. Note, only 5 of Florida’s victories, in their 27-game win streak, have been by less than 6 points.

St. Louis vs. Louisville (-9) 2:45 ET CBS Orlando, FL

3% St. Louis (+9)

The Louisville bandwagon has gotten very crowded. That was the final indicator that allowed this bureau to record a 10* Winner on Manhattan in the opening round. Though the Cards prevailed (71-64), they were outshot by the Jaspers 45 to 36%. Only the strong board work of the Cards, which showed them to be +14 in rebounding margin, along with making 27/35 from the stripe allowed them to get the victory. Harrell had a double, double at 12/13, while 4 Cards scored in double digits. Earlier in the evening, St. Louis showed why 5 senior starters are always dangerous in NCAA play. After winning 19 straight games, SLU limped into this event at 1-4 SU ATS, including a QF loss in the CCT. Trailing by 16 in the 2nd half, it looked like the Bills had tossed the towel. But, you are never out of it as long as Wolfpack HC Gottfried is on the other bench. He made enough coaching mistakes to allow St. Louis to force OT and his Wolfpack missed 15 foul shots. The Bills showed their poise with a 16/9 Assist/TO ratio and knocked down 9 triples at opportune times. If it weren’t for a 10/22 night from the stripe, the victory margin would have been larger. Even against the pressure of Louisville, this team will be tough to blow out. St. Louis lost 6 games this year by 6 to Wisconsin, 5 to Wichita St., 7 to Duquesne, 11 to VCU, 5 to Dayton and 3 to St. Bonnie. Five out of 6 of those will get us the money today. As long as the public continues to ride Louisville in this game, we have a good opportunity for a winner in St. Louis.

Oregon vs. Wisconsin (-5) 7:45 ET CBS Milwaukee, WI

5% Wisconsin (-5)

My major concern is the flocking of public money to a Badger side that blew out American (75-35) in Round 1at a very favorable site. First score I got saw American leading 20 to 13. That means the rest of the way it was everything Badger by a count of 62-15. In so doing, Wisky outshot the Eagles 50 to 30%, knocked down 10 triples, had a 13/7 Assist/TO ratio, while harassing American into an 8/17 Assist/TO ratio. As previously stated, this is HC Ryan’s most athletic offensive team with all 5 players being both capable of taking it to the hoop, as well as knocking down the triple. Later in the day, Oregon continued their magical run. The Ducks won (87-68) outshooting BYU 50 to 33%, while only knocking down 2/13 triples. But, they had an outstanding 21/8 Assist/TO margin and knocked down 31/38 from the stripe. Now, following their mid-season 2-8 SU, 3-7 ATS nosedive, the Ducks are on a run of 9-1 SU, 7-2 ATS. Before you unleash that rubber band from your bankroll, note that veteran 4th year Oregon HC Altman now has a record of 36-20 ATS as underdog, including 6-2 ATS this year. Though Oregon perimeter players Young, Moser, Calliste, Artis, and Dotson are an explosive group, in the end, the Oregon undoing will be that there continues to be no D in uck.

Texas vs. Michigan (-4-) 5:15 ET CBS Milwaukee, WI

4% Michigan (-4-)

It has been a fantastic turnaround season for a Texas team who was just 16-18 SU last year in an injury plagued, suspension ridden season. Must credit 16th year HC Barnes for authoring a turnaround with strong board work and explosive offense. But the Horns may have peaked a bit early. Witness their 4-5 SU, 2-6 ATS recent mark and Round 1 survival (87-85) against Arizona St. in a game that was just as evenly played in the stats as the final score. Far prefer the brilliant coaching of Belein, who remains on pace to return his Wolves to the Final Four. Loss of PG Burke and backcourt mate Hardaway, along with the injury to McGary, was expected to doom the fortunes of Michigan. But, all Belein has done is win the rugged Big 10 with a 15-3 SU mark before falling to his double avenging rival in the CCT. A nice bounce back in Round 1, 57-40 vs. Wofford, showed the coaching versatility of Belein. His Wolves controlled the boards with a +9 margin, held the Terriers to a single triple, and outshot them 48 to 34%. There is brilliant backcourt play from Stauskas, Levert, and Walton along with efficient interior work by committee. Must note the outstanding record of Belein, that finds him to be an amazing 59-36 ATS in neutral court games. That is no accident! Nor is the fact that Michigan commits just 9 TOs per game. With 76% FT shooting, it will be no surprise to see them extend any late game margin.

Harvard vs. Michigan St. (-7) 8:40 ET TNT Spokane, WA

3% Harvard (+7)

My bad for fading my meal ticket, the Harvard Crimson, against an impotent offense of Cincinnati, whose clueless coach Cronin continues to embarrass himself on the sidelines. Since the Bearcats could shoot just 37% from the field, with only 5 assists (tying Colorado for the worst mark of the day), Harvard survived, despite missing 11 shots from the stripe. They used their offensive patience and teamwork to put 5 players in the scoring column with 9 or more. In years gone by, the Crimson were satisfied with their invitation to The Dance. Having lost in this round last year, they will enter with positive hopes of a victory in this game. Chambers is a ball-handler supreme ably abetted at the point by Curry. Moundou-Missi and Casey man the interior, while Saunders and Rivard are outstanding wing players, who can stick the triple. With the Spartans holding on for a late game cover against the Blue Hens (decided at the foul stripe in the last 5 seconds), this Michigan St. bandwagon will get very crowded. With all players in full health, the track record of Izzo, and the 6-0 ATS run, be weary of hopping on board.

N. Dakota St. vs. San Diego St. (-4) 6:10 ET TNT Spokane, WA

4% San Diego St. (-4)

Technician’s Dream Game of the Day with the Bison pulling the upset and the Aztecs failing to cover in OT driving this line downward to a value price. N. Dakota St. has been on the radar of the linemaker the entire season. That is why, despite 10 consecutive victories and a 26-6 SU mark, that N. Dakota St. is just 12-15 ATS. Not that their victory Thursday night (80-75 in OT vs. Oklahoma) was undeserved. The Bison outshot the Sooners 53 to 35%, surviving 12 triples by Oklahoma (the most of the night, virtually guarantees a cover) by knocking down 20/22 from the stripe. Though 4 Bison scored 11+ points, the killer Bs of Braun and Bjorkland were held to a combined 24 points. Later in the evening, the Aztecs needed OT to fend off the surprising Aggies of the weak WAC. Major issue was Aztec shooting, which saw them make only 39% from the field. Good news is that interior force Davis had a double, double with 10/14 while expected top scorers Thames (23) and Polee (15) combined for 38 points. At a value price, and with the emotions working in our favor, let’s lineup with a San Diego St. team who is 30-4 SU for the season and clearly has the advantage on the pine with veteran HC Fisher against HC Phillips of the Bison. Note that only 4 of the Aztecs wins this season have been by fewer than 4 points.
