NCAA East Regional betting news and notes: Virginia needs more of an edge
By BRIAN COVERT

No.1 Virginia Cavaliers vs. No. 8 Memphis Tigers (+5.5, 129)

The most surprising part of Virginia’s too-close-for-comfort win over Coastal Carolina was just how soft the Cavaliers were to start the game. Virginia allowed the No. 16 Chanticleers 35 first-half points, 10 points above their season average. But the Cavs say they’ve learned their lesson and fans can expect a more aggressive team out of the gate Sunday: “On Sunday we’ll come out with an edge and try to punch people in the mouth – figuratively,” said Cavs forward Erik Nolte after the game.

It seems the Memphis Tigers had some problem dictating the pace Friday, taking 55 percent of its first-half shots from beyond the 3-point arc despite being the nation’s 211th best 3-point shooting team. They reversed that trend in the second scoring 24 of their 40 second-half points in the paint, where they are the nation’s highest scoring team amongst the major conferences. They may not have an easy time reversing such a trend Sunday as the Cavaliers are the nation’s best at defending the inside the arc, allowing opponents to shoot only 41.8 percent on two-pointers.

No. 3 Iowa St. Cyclones vs No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels (+1.5, 159)

The Cyclones used a balanced attack to upend North Carolina Central in the second round Friday, having five players score 14 points or more. One of those was forward Georges Niang who finished with 24 points before breaking his foot and is now lost for the tourney. This leaves the Cyclones with just two rotational players over 6’6” who will do their best to keep the NCAA’s seventh-best offensive rebounding team in UNC off the glass Sunday.

The extra work the Tar Heels did on rebounding this week paid off Friday. UNC scored 26 second chance points, the most among any team in the last three NCAA tourney’s, and grabbed 55 percent of their missed shots, their second-most prolific game in this regard of the season. Against a now-undermanned Iowa St. team, there’s a chance UNC fans may see a similar performance Sunday.

NCAA West Regional betting news and notes: No D in Creighton-Baylor game
By COLIN KELLY

No. 8 Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. No. 1 Arizona Wildcats (-6, 127)

If Arizona expects to live up to its seed reputation and get past the Zags (29-6, 18-14-1 ATS), it will have to get better on the defensive glass. The Arizona Daily Star’s Bruce Pascoe tweeted that the Wildcats allowed 16th-seeded Weber State to score 16 second-chance points on 13 offensive rebounds (nine individual, four team) in Friday’s Round of 64 game. Arizona (31-4 SU, 20-14 ATS) held on for a 68-59 win, falling well short as a 19.5-point favorite.
Gonzaga, meanwhile, went off as a 4-point ‘dog against No. 9 seed Oklahoma State and controlled the game, winning 85-77.

Arizona-Gonzaga is almost a mirror matchup of a thrilling game from the 2003 NCAA Tournament, when the Wildcats were also the West Regional’s No. 1 seed and the Zags were a No. 9 seed. Arizona held on for a 96-95, double-overtime victory, and the Bulldogs cashed as 10-point pups. The Wildcats ultimately advanced to the Elite Eight before falling to No. 2 seed Kansas, 78-75.

No. 6 Baylor Bears vs. No. 3 Creighton Bluejays (-2.5, 144)

Perhaps not seeing another basketball powerhouse from the state of North Carolina will help Creighton (27-7 SU, 18-14 ATS) solve its Round of 32 woes and finally advance to the Sweet 16. Last year, after opening with a win over Cincinnati, the Bluejays got dumped by Duke 66-50 as a 5.5-point underdog. In 2012, Creighton edged Alabama in its opener, only to fall to North Carolina 87-73 catching 8.5 points.

The Omaha World-Herald’s Dirk Chatelain did some digging that would indicate defense won’t be on display when Creighton and Baylor (25-11 SU, 14-14-2 ATS) get together in the Round of 32. For the season, the only top-eight NCAA Tournament seed worse defensively than Baylor is Creighton, based on Ken Pomeroy’s adjusted defensive efficiency rankings.

On the flip side, Creighton averages 10.32 made 3-pointers per game – No. 1 in the nation – and Baylor averages 7.42 (No. 47).

NCAA South Regional betting news and notes: Randle can handle extra minutes

The round of 32 is underway, with two big South Regional matchups on the docket. Here is a look at Sunday's action:

No. 10 Stanford Cardinal vs. No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks (-6, 142)

With Joel Embiid out with a back injury and Andrew Wiggins expected to be the Cardinal's primary focus, the Jayhawks will need more from Wayne Selden than the two points he scored in the opener against Eastern Kentucky. The good news: Selden finished with just two points twice during the regular season, and bounced back in the next game both times - scoring 14 in a win over UTEP on Nov. 30 and 15 in a rout of TCU on Feb. 15.

The Jayhawks will be keyed in on Cardinal leading scorer Chasson Randle, who played all 40 minutes in the round-of-64 victory over New Mexico but has had no trouble bouncing back from previous full-game assignments. Randle played 40 minutes three times over the course of the regular season, and averaged 19.3 points while shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and 88 percent from the free-throw line in the three games following those contests.

No. 4 UCLA Bruins vs. No. 12 Steven F. Austin Lumberjacks (+8.5, 144)

That the Bruins cruised to victory in their round-of-64 game against Tulsa despite getting just eight points from star swingman Kyle Anderson shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone who has followed the team. UCLA went 4-1 during the regular season in games where Anderson finished with a single-digit point total, with its only loss an 83-74 setback to Stanford on Feb. 22.

Lost in the stunning nature of the Lumberjacks' win over VCU - getting a four-point play in the waning moments of regulation before prevailing in overtime - is how they handled the Rams' "havoc" defense with relative ease. Stephen F. Austin had just five turnovers in the first half and had just one in the pivotal OT period. UCLA should provide a similar challenge, having finished the season with a plus-4 turnover differential.

NCAA Midwest Regional betting news and notes: Vols getting quick starts
By CHASE RUTTIG

No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers vs No. 14 Mercer Bears (+8, 128)

Mercer shocked the world by taking advantage of Duke's woeful trend of faltering late in games (Duke was being outscored 76-47 in the last five minutes of their previous five games) and will now have to play a Volunteers team known for their fast starts. Tennessee outscores their opponents by over five points per game in the opening ten minutes since conference play and used those quick starts to run UMass out of the gym in the second round Friday.

No. 1 Wichita State Shockers vs No. 8 Kentucky Wildcats (-3.5, 133)

Wichita State will get the biggest test of its undefeated season to date when they take on Kentucky in the most highly anticipated game in the Round of 32 Sunday. While Wichita State has the 35-0 record, Kentucky faced the tougher schedule in the SEC, but head coach John Calipari knows his team deserves to be the underdogs in this matchup.

"There haven't been many teams come in undefeated like Wichita State, deserve their ranking, deserve their seeding," Calipari said of the Shockers in his press conference following their win over Kansas State. "They play really hard. They have really good players. You don't go 35-0 without really good players."

The Shockers will be looking to rely on their experience when they play Sunday. Wichita State has nine upperclassmen on its roster from last year's Final Four team, while the Wildcats rely on nine freshmen on their much younger roster.

Round 3 betting cheat sheet: East Region Day 4

(6) North Carolina Tar Heels vs. (3) Iowa State Cyclones (-1.5, 159)

Despite a close call against Providence, the Tar Heels were able to survive, thanks in part to an inside presence that saw them grab 21 of their 40 rebounds off the offensive glass. The Tar Heels came into the tournament having been outscored 41-16 on second-chance points in their previous two games, but had 26 second-chance points in the win over Providence. That total tied for the most by any team in the last three NCAA tournaments, as North Carolina showed how dangerous it is even when its not shooting well.

The Cyclones were potent offensively, led by Georges Niang's 24 points, but the sophomore broke his foot in the victory and will miss the rest of the season. Despite being a No. 3 seed, Iowa State's players and coaches talk often of competing for a national championship. Coach Fred Hoiberg has discussed competing for championships since he became the Cyclones' coach four seasons ago, and he expects his players to have the mindset that championships are within reach.

TRENDS:

* Tar Heels are 0-6 ATS in their last six games overall.
* Cyclones are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.
* Over is 8-2 in Tar Heels last 10 neutral site games.

(8) Memphis Tigers vs. (1) Virginia Cavaliers (-5.5, 129)

The Tigers entered the NCAA tournament shooting 47.9 percent from the field and shook off a cold-shooting first half Friday to hit 66.7 percent of their second-half attempts. Leading scorer Joe Jackson (14.3 points) shot 6-for-12 against the Colonials, just the second time in the past eight games he has hit half of his attempts. Memphis finished the season second in the AAC in scoring at 77.4 points.

The Cavaliers have held opponents to 38.4 percent shooting from the field this season - ninth nationally - and 32.4 percent from 3-point range. Anthony Gill came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points Friday as Virginia shook off a slow start in its NCAA opener. Evan Nolte helped spark the Cavaliers in the second half with eight points, helping Virginia shoot 65 percent in the final 20 minutes.

TRENDS:

* Tigers are 5-1 ATS in their last six neutral site games.
* Cavaliers are 1-4 ATS in their last five non-conference games.
* Under is 7-1 in Tigers last eight neutral site games.

Round 3 betting cheat sheet: South Region Day 4

(10) Stanford Cardinal vs. (2) Kansas Jayhawks (-6, 142.5)

The Cardinal will require a much better effort from forward Dwight Powell (13.9 points, 6.8 rebounds) against the Jayhawks after he missed all eight of his shots while scoring a season-low three points to go with just four rebounds against New Mexico. Stanford jumped out to a quick 16-point lead and hung on for its first NCAA tournament victory since 2008 with a 58-53 win over New Mexico. Chasson Randle scored 23 points and the Cardinal were 8-of-15 from 3-point range while giving Johnny Dawkins his first NCAA tournament victory as a head coach.

Kansas surely didn’t miss injured center Joel Embiid (back) in its NCAA tournament opener. The Jayhawks will hope reinforcements Jamari Traylor and Tarik Black have another productive game when second-seeded Kansas faces No. 10 seed Stanford in Sunday’s round of 32 in St. Louis. Guard Andrew Wiggins scored 19 points but the overwhelming key figure in the victory over Eastern Kentucky was Traylor, who made 7-of-8 shots and collected seven of his rebounds on the offensive glass.

TRENDS:

* Cardinal are 2-5 ATS in their last seven NCAA Tournament games.
* Jayhawks are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games.
* Over is 12-4 in Cardinal last 16 NCAA Tournament games.

(12) Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks vs. (4) UCLA Bruins (-8.5, 144.5)

Stephen F. Austin survived VCU’s pressure defense to post the first NCAA tournament in school history, but the Lumberjacks are decidedly undersized compared to the Bruins. Even before the unforgettable win over VCU, many experts were predicting a Cinderella run for the back-to-back Southland Conference champions. First-year coach Brad Underwood’s team ranks among the nation’s best in turnover margin, and the balanced offensive attack is led by guard Thomas Walkup, Parker and Haymon, who scored 17 points against VCU.

UCLA figures to have a large contingent of fans in San Diego for Sunday’s NCAA tournament third-round game. Jordan Adams scored 21 points and San Diego native Norman Powell added 15 as the Bruins snapped Tulsa’s 11-game winning streak on Friday by finishing the game on a 17-5 run. The Bruins are peaking at the right time under first-year coach Steve Alford after winning the Pac-12 tournament title over Arizona, but they can’t afford to underestimate the dangerous Lumberjacks.

TRENDS:

* Lumberjacks are 5-1 ATS in their last six non-conference games.
* Bruins are 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Bruins last five NCAA Tournament games.

Round 3 betting cheat sheet: Midwest Region Day 4

(8) Kentucky Wildcats vs. (1) Wichita State Shockers (-3.5, 133.5)

Andrew Harrison (seven points, five rebounds, five assists against Kansas State) and twin brother Aaron are key cogs in an all-freshman starting lineup. "See, you guys are looking at his numbers offensively, but he is also guarding the best offensive players every game and still scoring," coach John Calipari told reporters about Aaron Harrison, who registered 18 on Friday. Randle recorded 13 points and nine rebounds in the second half versus Kansas State and provides a challenge for Wichita State's senior-laden frontcourt while 7-0 sophomore Willie Cauley-Stein (four blocks Friday) can be an intimidating force inside.

When the NCAA tournament bracket was revealed, the Midwest stood out as the presumed toughest regional with the Shockers rated as the best team. Wichita State, which has won 10 straight games by double figures and its last 18 by at least seven points, defeated four teams during its non-conference schedule that reached the NCAA tournament by an average of 12.5 points, silencing the critics who say the Shockers "haven't played anybody" a bit.

TRENDS:

* Wildcats are 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall.
* Shockers are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 neutral site games.
* Under is 5-1 in Wildcats last six neutral site games.

(14) Mercer Bears vs. (11) Tennessee Volunteers (-8, 128)

The 14th-seeded Bears shocked Duke 78-71 on Friday and must contain a physical Tennessee front line along with talented guard Jordan McRae to advance in the Midwest regional. Five of the top six scorers and all of the Bears’ regular starters are seniors, led by guard Langston Hall (14.6 points) and center Daniel Coursey (10.1). Senior forward Jakob Gollon led the way Friday with 20 points as Mercer shot 55.6 percent from the field and answered every Duke run, forcing 28 percent shooting inside the 3-point line.

The 11th-seeded Volunteers can reach the regional semifinals for the fourth time in eight years with their third win in six days. The Volunteers rallied to beat Iowa in the first round Wednesday and took control early in an 86-67 rout of Massachusetts on Friday, getting 44 points and 27 rebounds combined from 6-8, 260-pound Jarnell Stokes. Tennessee has held opponents to 52.7 points per game over its last seven outings.

TRENDS:

* Bears are 1-4 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
* Volunteers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games overall.
* Over is 8-2 in Bears last 10 overall.

Round 3 betting cheat sheet: West Region Day 4

(6) Baylor Bears vs. (3) Creighton Bluejays (-2.5, 144)

Baylor relied heavily on its ability from the free-throw line and a strong zone defense to advance to the third round in the NCAA tournament. The Bears went 38-of-48 from the stripe to pick up their 11th win in 13 games Friday and are trying to get to the school’s third regional semifinal in the last five seasons. Baylor dominated on the interior against the Cornhuskers, winning the boards 37-25 and constantly getting into the paint and drawing fouls to help make up for a poor shooting game.

The Bluejays have proven that they are not just McDermott offensively and showed some of their versatility Friday when the three-time All-American went more than 14 minutes without scoring in the second half against the Ragin’ Cajuns. Ethan Wragge and Austin Chapman took turns stretching the defense from beyond the 3-point line and will attempt to do the same against Baylor’s zone. Wragge has recorded all but seven of his field-goal attempts this season from beyond the arc.

TRENDS:

* Bears are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
* Bluejays are 1-7-1 ATS in their last nine NCAA Tournament games.
* Under is 20-7-1 in Bluejays last 28 non-conference games.

(8) Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. (1) Arizona Wildcats (-6, 127)

Gonzaga has some areas where it can improve, such as free-throw shooting, as the Bulldogs made just 26-of-41 in Friday's win over Oklahoma State. However, coach Mark Few was generally pleased with his team's shooting (50 percent from the field and from behind the arc) and clutch play down the stretch, led by Kevin Pangos' 10-of-10 foul shooting over the final 91 seconds.

Arizona was not at its best in Friday's NCAA tournament opener, but coach Sean Miller hopes that the nerves are a thing of the past come Sunday. The top-seeded Wildcats - a group that Miller admitted seemed nervous at times on Friday - take on eighth-seeded Gonzaga in San Diego in a third-round matchup in the West Regional. "We are fortunate to advance and I know the next game will be a terrific game," Miller said after his team outlasted pesky Weber State, 68-59. "One of my hopes is, (having) one of these under our belts, we will be more ourselves and better on Sunday."

TRENDS:

* Bulldogs are 1-5-1 ATS in their last seven vs. Pacific-12.
* Wildcats are 6-1 ATS in their last seven NCAA Tournament games.
* Under is 14-5-1 in Wildcats last 20 neutral site games.

Kansas C Embiid ruled out vs. Stanford
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Kansas freshman center Joel Embiid will not play Sunday's NCAA Tournament game against Stanford, according to ESPN.com.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self said Embiid was ruled out because he is still recovering from a back injury.

Embiid missed the last two regular-season games and the Big 12 tournament.

If Kansas reaches the regional semifinals next week, Self said Embiid will be questionable to play. The Jayhawks, a No. 2 seed, defeated Eastern Kentucky on Friday night without Embiid.

The 7-footer averaged 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds this season before sustaining a lower back injury during conference play and then aggravated it late in the season. He last played March 1. He went to Los Angeles earlier this month to visit a back specialist.

Embiid is projected by some to be the No. 1 pick in this year's NBA draft if he leaves school early.

Bears were 23-28 from line vs Duke Friday, shot 56% inside arc- they're 78-31 over last three years, so this isn't a fluke. Mercer won at Ole Miss back in December, lost by 3 at Texas. Tennessee won seven of last eight, with 56-49 loss to Florida in SEC tourney; they beat SC-Upstate 74-65 back in November, its only game vs an A-Sun opponent. Vols are playing for third time in five days, beating Iowa in OT Wednesday, beating UMass by 19 Friday. Favorites covered only three previous second round games with an 11-seed meeting a 14-seed

Over last 5+ years, #1 seeds are 13-7-1 vs spread in this round. Virginia was down 5 at half Friday, only 9th #1 seed to trail a 16-seed at the half, but they won confortably. Cavaliers won 17 of last 18 games since tough loss at Duke in early January; they're #7 in country, allowing opponents to make only 41.7% of its 2-point shots. Memphis is just 3-3 in its last six games; they turn ball over too much, don't make enough foul shots for team with their talent- they're 5-8 vs top 30 teams this year- they've played #49 schedule nationally, are #62 in experience. Virginia won by 3 over SMU in its only game vs an AAC opponent.

Since 1999, #10 seeds who beat 7-seed in first round are 18-7 vs spread in second round. Stanford is #21 in country in experience, #13 in height; they played #20 schedule in country. Both Cardinal guards played 40:00 Friday, third starter played 36 in brickfest win over New Mexico- thery held Williams/Kirk to combined 1-12 from floor. Kansas was 32-all at half with EKU Friday, Over last 5+ years, #2 seeds are 11-7 vs spread in this round. Jayhawks split last six games; their defense isn't as good without Embiid; they lost at Colorado in only games vs Pac-12 squad.

Wichita State is 35-0, they were in Final Four LY, while Kentucky was losing NIT game at Robert Morris. Shockers beat Tennessee by 9, beat Alabama by 5 in its two games vs SEC opponents. Over last 5+ years, #1 seeds are 13-7-1 vs spread in this round. Kentucky is last in country in experience; they're 4-8 this season vs top 50 teams- they turned ball over over 15 times on 61 possessions in Friday's ugly win vs K-State. Last time Wichita won game by less than 10 points was at No Iowa on Feb 8- this is their Super Bowl, the game Dick Vitale says they're going to lose. Game opened at Wichita -2.5, is now -4.5 or -5. .

Baylor won 11 of last 13 games; they dismantled Nebraska Friday 74-60 going 38-48 on foul line, with Nebraska coach getting tossed for carping to refs. Bears are athletic but do not defend 3's well, allowing opponents to hit 36.1% of them, bad news vs Creighton squad that leads country, making 42.1% behind arc. Favorites covered nine of last 11 second round games pitting 3-seed vs 6-seed. Bluejays scored 72+ wins in their last seven wins; they scored 69 or less points in their last six losses. Baylor held five of its last eight opponents under 70 points. Guys on ESPNU during week seemed pessimistic about Creighton's chances in this game.

Iowa State's Niang (foot) is done for year, huge blow for Cyclone squad whose bench is in bottom 25 in country in minutes played. State won its last five games, scoring 85+ points in four of five games. North Carolina snuck by gutty Providence by hoop Friday, its first win in three games; Tar Heels were torched by PG Cotton (36 points, 8 assists). Tar Heels lost by 3 at home to Texas in their only game vs Big X opponent this season. Favorites covered nine of last 11 second round games pitting a #3-seed vs 6-seed, but like we said, Niang's injury just makes Cyclones unplayable in this spot.

Arizona won eight of last ten games but after being up 12 on Weber St. at half Friday, Wildcats struggled to put away a 14-6 Big Sky team, with final score 68-59. Gonzaga was sharp in fairly easy win over Oklahoma State, running out to 9-0 lead and coasting home; they won last six in a row, beat Pac-12 doormat Wazzu by 16 in only game vs Pac-12 squad. Zags won last meeting with Arizona by 11 two years ago; they lost last four second round games and seven of last nine- their last Sweet 16 was in 2009. Since '01, Arizona is 7-1 in this round. Over last 5+ seasons, #1 seeds are 13-7-1 vs spread in this round.

Stephen F Austin pulled rabbit out of hat with amazing comeback in last minute vs VCU, beating Rams in OT; #12 seeds covered six of last seven tries as an underdog in this round. Lumberjacks haven't lost since 66-58 loss at East Tennessee, which is coached by Murray Bartow, whose dad replaced John Wooden at UCLA. Bruins won last four games, three by 17+ points; they're #25 in country, mkaing 38.9% from arc. Over last 12 years, #4 seeds are 11-21 vs spread as favorite in this round. SFA is #4 in country, forcing turnovers 24.1% of time- they lost at Texas by 10, best team they had played until beating VCU Friday.

Other games
St Mary's started season 9-0, but went 0-3 on Diamond Head just before Christmas and is 23-11 now, though they won three of last four on road. Minnesota is 12-2 outside Big Dozen, winning four of last five at home.

Clemson is 10-3 outside the ACC this year; they're #1 in country, with opponents making just 28.4% from arc. If mcDaniels comes back for his senior season, Clemson will have whole team back and be very good. Illinois won six of its last eight games, with both losses to Michigan.

Louisiana Tech's win at Georgia Satrurday should give Southern Miss a boost here in Columbia, where Tigers won last six home games. Mizzou split its last eight games overall. USM won last three road games, with last loss on road Feb 15 at Middle Tennessee.

Kentucky +5 -110 over Wichita State

Midwest Region - Scottrade Center - St. Louis, MO

2:45 PM EST. Look, it’s hard to argue against a 35-0 team, regardless of its schedule. After all, the Shockers can beat only the teams they play. It’s also difficult to argue that they aren’t cut out for tourney play when the likes of Cleanthony Early, Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet all played key roles on a Final Four squad. However, this is a Shockers’ team that had the 135th toughest schedule in the land and that didn’t play a top-25 team the entire year. Wichita State’s best win this season came against BYU, a team that was destroyed in the previous round by the now departed Ducks. Battle tested the Shockers are not. Furthermore, Wichita State does not have a dominant low-post defender or a frontcourt shot-blocker. That’s a huge problem against the Kentucky’s bigs. Additionally, the Shockers only force turnovers on 18% of the opponents possession’s and that’s another danger sign for a high seed.

Yes, Kentucky is very young (every key contributor on the roster is either a freshman or a sophomore) and that youth has cost them this season, as they ended up with a 25-10 overall record. Looking deeper, the Wildcats could have easily gone 34-1 this season. Remarkably, nine of the Wildcats 10 losses this season came by five points or less with half of those being against ranked squads. In the SEC Championship game, the Wildcats lost to tourney favorite Florida by a single point, 61-60. Kentucky’s tough schedule and slew of close games has them well-prepped to knock off the Shockers. The Wildcats' frontcourt of Julius Randle, Dakari Johnson and Willie Cauley-Stein is intimidating defensively and productive offensively. Kentucky is one of the nation's top offensive rebounding teams that have racked up second-chance points all season. They also got to the line more times (935) by a wide margin than any other SEC team. This is an aggressive team and extremely talented team that was ranked #1 in the country before the season began. Kentucky absolutely has the chops to win outright here and these five points being offered is about the sweetest insurance there is today.

Gonzaga +6½ -102 over Arizona

West Region - Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl - San Diego

9:40 PM EST. Arizona basically goes with a 6-man rotation, bringing Rondae Hollis-Jefferson off the bench and subbing him into multiple positions depending on who’s in foul trouble. If you can get into their bench, they instantly become more vulnerable. Indeed the Wildcats play a tremendous brand of defense but one thing we know for sure in that when you wager on a #1 seed, you are almost always going to pay a premium to do so and that applies here. Teams' without a deep bench often struggle after the first round, even a team as good as the Wildcats. Arizona did not have an easy time against Weber State, falling behind 7-0 and being outscored in the second half by three points. What that suggests is that WSU made some key second half adjustments, something Gonzaga’s Coach, Mark Few is a master at.

Of all the mid-major underdogs in the round of 64, Gonzaga might have been the most impressive of them all. They defeated a very good Cowboys team and dominated play in all the key areas. The Zags built a 10-point lead early and never once let the Cowboys back in it. Unlike Bulldogs teams of the past, that were ranked high and projected to make deep runs, this edition came in under the radar as a #8 seed and proved on Friday that the role of the underdog is one they can thrive in. What we like so much about the Zags is they came in under-seeded, which results in them receiving inflated points. Gonzaga plays outstanding defense, they are solid at the PG position and these are two key traits that should allow them to stay well within this margin and perhaps even win it outright.

SPORTS WAGERS NHL

Columbus -½ +130 over N.Y. ISLANDERS

Regulation only. The Islanders are 17-18 on the road but at home they are a dismal 10-26. Nassau County has no atmosphere whatsoever and now that the Islanders are out of

the playoffs, expect a small crowd and even less atmosphere in this one. To make matters worse, the Islanders are without their two best players in John Tavaras and Kyle Okposo. Combined, that pair has recorded 135 points this season. Also out for the Isles is Michael Grabner and Lubomir Vishnovsky. Oh and let’s not forget they traded Matt Moulson for Thomas Vanek earlier in the year and subsequently traded Vanek at the trade deadline. In their last home game, five days ago, the Islanders lost to the offensively challenged Wild, 6-0. In net, Evgeni Nabokov is among the worst in the game. Nabokov’s last seven games has seen him post save percentages of .846, .833, .897, .737, .818, .875 and .857. This guy should be a back-up in the minors. In other words, the Islanders are a complete mess.

How big is this game for the Jackets? If the season ended today, Columbus would be out of the playoffs. A win here and they leapfrog over Washington and they could also jump over the Red Wings and Maple Leafs depending on the outcome of their respective games. Two points separate four teams vying for the final two playoff spots and the Jackets are one of them. This game is absolutely crucial. The Jackets are just 4-4 over their past eight games but don’t put a lot of emphasis on those results. They outshot the Hurricanes 47-20 in a recent 3-1 loss and even outshot the Sharks 38-27 in another recent loss. Columbus is playing hard, they’re the vastly superior team here and those efforts will be rewarded today against the NHL’s most beatable home team.

DETROIT -½ +140 over Minnesota

Regulation only. Minnesota has one win in their past five games and that lone victory occurred against the Islanders. They have just two wins over their past nine games. On zero days rest with the second game being on the road, Minnesota is 1-4 this year. The Wild lost at home last night to this same Detroit team and there’s a big discrepancy in their home and road records. They are under .500 on the road and now they’re going bad. Offensively challenged and struggling at the worst possible time (heading into the playoffs), Minnesota has very little appeal here against these hungry Red Wings.

Detroit has put itself into a position to make the playoffs. With a win here and a Maple Leafs lost in New Jersey today, the Red Wings can leapfrog over the Leafs into seventh place and put Toronto on the brink of missing the dance. The Red Wings also have two games in hand on both Toronto and Washington. Playing without Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Jurco, Justin Abdelkader, Dan Cleary and others, Detroit has won four of five with only loss over that span occurring against Chicago. Given little chance of making the playoffs and ending the NHL’s longest playoff run when all those players were injured, Detroit, much like last year’s Ottawa Senators are playing with a huge chip on their shoulders. And it’s not like they lack talent. Young players like Riley Sheahan, Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, Darren Helm and Luke Glendening among others are thriving in key roles. Combine that with the leadership and experience of Daniel Alfredsson, Todd Bertuzzi and Johan Franzen and what you have is a focused, determined and very dangerous team. The best news of all, however, is that Jimmy Howard has regained the form that made him one of the NHL’s best goaltenders over the past couple of years. The Red Wings can smell the playoffs and they can also smell some wounded prey here.

Stephen Nover | NBA Sides - - Dime Raptors

Pick 702 TOR -6.5 (-110) Hilton vs 701 ATL

Analysis: This is another early start time for a Raptors Sunday home game, which is very inconvenient for opposing teams. The Raptors are a much better team than Atlanta and won't lack for motivation. Not only is Toronto off a Friday night one-point double overtime home loss to Oklahoma City, in which the Raptors led the Thunder by eight during the second overtime, but Toronto also has a strong revenge factor going. Just five days ago, the Hawks beat the Raptors in overtime at home. Toronto has a rebounding edge and bench advantage on the Hawks. Atlanta has won two in a row on the road, but previous to that had dropped 10 consecutive away matchups. The Hawks are 2-9-1 ATS in their last 12 road contests. They have lost 24 of their 35 road games this season. Toronto is 10-3-1 ATS the past 14 times hosting opponents that have a losing road mark. The Hawks have been huge money losers going 4-16-1 ATS during their past 21 overall games. The Raptors, by contrast, are the second-best point spread team in the NBA covering 61 percent of their games.

Sunday card has the 6* 100% Tournament Total of the Year from a Perfect totals system. There is also an early 5* Side and a Triple Perfect NBA System play tonight. Free NCAAB Play below.

On Sunday the free play is on Wichita St. Game 722 at 2;45 eastern. Wichita is an amazing 35-0 and the line at 3-4 points is reasonable today. The Shockers will not get any line respect as a 1 seed purely because many feel they will falter against the major conference teams. They have covered their only 2 recent games against SEC Teams and are a solid 15-1 to the spread vs winning teams. As a neutral court favorite of less than 4 the past few seasons they have covered 11 of 13. They were a final 4 team a year ago and will not wilt in a big game as they go 9 deep and have 5 guys who could take a last shot if necessary. Wichita has covered 6 of the last 7 NCAAB Tournament games and Have won and covered all 3 games vs top 50 RPI Schools this year. Kentucky is good but nearly what they were in past years and have lost 9 times this season. The Wildcats have failed to cover 9 of the last 13 after scoring 60 or less and are under .500 vs top 50 RPI Schools. Look for Wichita to make it 10 straight spread wins here and make it back to the Sweet 16. On Sunday we have 3 Powerful Plays up, led by the 6* 100% Tournament Total of the year with a huge system and several indicators. There is also a 96% Early 5* Side and a Triple Perfect NBA 5* Side to end the wee big. Jump on and get the weekending cash. For the free Play take Wichita St. GC

Revenge Game of the Month

Atlanta at Toronto (-6-) 1:05 ET

4%Toronto -6-

On March 18th, Toronto visited Atlanta and came away with a 118-113 OT defeat. Though Toronto regained their momentum with a victory at New Orleans the following night, the Raptors suffered a brutal loss on this court to OKC 119-118 on Friday night. The combination of that home court loss and Tuesday’s revenge motive sets this up as a top play winner. Some may point to the Hawks recent 5-1 SU record. But a closer look at their schedule shows us that those victories came against sub .500 teams Utah, Milwaukee, Denver and Charlotte. Atlanta returned to their previous 1-14 SU form (they are now 5-15 ATS) with a 111-105 home loss vs New Orleans Friday night. Hawks had been a major money burner on the road with a record of 10-18 ATS when not taking double digits. Toronto continues their ascent since the trade of Rudy Gay with a record of 31-17 SU, 33-15 ATS. Look for the bounceback by Toronto today as they are 19-10 ATS following a defeat and 12-7 ATS as the better team on this floor. Raptors get even in what can only be our 10* NBA revenge game of March.

NCAA

Mercer vs. Tennessee (-8-) 4:10 ET TNT Raleigh, NC

4% Mercer (+8-)

When faced with a possibility of being eliminated from the Big Dance, Tennessee has responded with a run of 7-1 SU, 6-2 ATS, failing to cover only against No. 1 Florida. In the last 7 games, the Vols have allowed an average of only 53 PPG. They have been keyed by the interior duo of Maymon and Stokes, who went for 26/14 in the (86-67) wire-to-wire destruction of UMass on Friday. In that contest, Tennessee outshot UMass 54 to 42% and commanded the boards with a +12 rebound margin. Now, they face a Mercer team, who pulled the biggest upset of the 1st Round with a well-deserved 78-71 outright victory, as 13 point underdog vs. Duke. The win was for real as the Bears finished on a 20-8 surge. Mercer outshot Duke 56 to 35% and had a nifty 16/8 Assist/TO ratio. With PG Hall running the offense to perfection, 5 players scored 11 or more points. In fact, the Bears played so well, that they overcame 15 triples by Duke (normally a lock for an ATS win) and a -9 rebound margin. Under 5th year HC Hoffman, Mercer features 7 seniors who have been aiming for this goal of getting to the Sweet 16 for the last 4 seasons. Winners of the CIT, two years ago, and advancing in NIT action last year (when they lost to Dunk City in the CCT) this is a Mercer team who is hungry for more. Mercer is an explosive offensive team that averages 79/48/39, converts 73% from the stripe, and has a 16.4/11.9 TO/Assist ratio. On defense, they allow just 66/40/30 and have a +5.1 rebound margin to offset the interior edge the Vols have featured against most recent opponents. Believe that Mercer can play with Tennessee based on a team that returns intact from the one who beat the Vols (75-67) in the NIT last season.

Memphis vs. Virginia (-5-) 6:40 ET TNT Raleigh, NC

5% Virginia (-5-)

Among my debacles of Friday night was Memphis converting 2 foul shots with no time remaining on the clock, after one of the refs had signaled the conclusion of the game. That resulted in millions of dollars changing hands as the 71-66 final crossed the pointspread, resulting in a loser for my selection on G. Washington. It may not have been an issue if the Colonials had done a bit better than 14-24 from the foul line. In any event, this is the end of the line for Memphis. The Tigers have lost against good defensive teams in their conference, losing to Cincinnati twice by 16 and 13 points, UConn three times by 10, 19 and 5 points, and vs. SMU by 15 points. That sets a clear precedent when they face one of the superior defensive teams in the country. No surprise that UVA played a flat 1st half in their 79-59 win, no cover, vs. CCC. But Virginia, who allows just 55/39/32 with a +6.3 rebound margin, played a strong 2nd half in allowing only 24 2nd half points. An efficient 16/7 Assist/TO margin led to 53% shooting. This team came together at the start of conference play following an 87-52 loss at Tennessee. Team leader, Joe Harris, met with 5th year HC Bennett following that defeat, cleared the air, and set sail on an ACC season that saw the Cavs go 19-2 SU, 16-5 ATS vs. ACC competition in winning both the regular season and CCT crowns. The emergence of the perimeter tandem of PG Perrantes and Brogdon joined veterans, Harris and Mitchell, and explosive offensive role players, Gill and Anderson, to develop an offense that matched the defense. Memphis will offer little resistance. Familiarity with this Raleigh site is an additional bonus for the Cavs.

Stanford vs. Kansas (-6) 2:15 ET CBS St. Louis, MO

4% Kansas (-6)

The smile on the face of Stanford HC Dawkins was one of relief. With a First Round victory against New Mexico, Dawkins recorded the first NCAA win of his coaching career at Stanford and in the process saved his job. Now, the task becomes much tougher against a Kansas team who clearly underperformed in Game 1. Combined with their defeat in the SF of the CCT, that makes two dismal performances in a row for the Jayhawks. But, the reason for their failure to cover in their (89-69) win vs. E. Kentucky was clear; the Jayhawks outshot the Colonels 60 to 39%, were a whopping +25 in the rebound margin, had 5 double digit scorers, and dished out 17 assists. But, they allowed EKY to knock down 12 triples, a mighty amount, that virtually guarantees coverage for a double digit dog. Today’s challenge is not as great. Stanford shot only 39% against the Lobos, including their best interior player, Powell, going 0-8 from the field. Though Randle is an excellent scorer, he is clearly not a true PG. Following a pair of substandard performances, look for the Jayhawks to bounce back.

Kentucky vs. Wichita St. (-2-) 4:45 ET CBS St. Louis, MO

2% Wichita St. (-2-)

Many years ago, my Oakmont High School hoop team went undefeated in Section play with every victory by double digits. After dispatching a pair of inferior opponents in post-season play, we at last met a team who was superior to us. Locked in a tight game, we were unprepared for the challenge and suffered a narrow defeat. That blip on the radar screen in the history of basketball may well serve as an analogy to this Wichita St. team. The Shockers have only twice been favored by fewer than 10 points since December 1st. Since that time, they have 24 consecutive victories as part of their 35-0 SU season. Most importantly, they have only won 3 of those games by fewer than 10 points. Now, they must face their biggest challenge of the year against the most physical team they have faced since a (70-61) victory vs. Tennessee on December 14th. Kentucky is playing their best basketball of the year on a 4-0 SU ATS run in which they have allowed just 59 PPG. Randle had 19/15 Friday night in the Wildcats’ 56-49 win over Kansas St. Kentucky controlled the boards 38-23 and held K. State to just 36% from the field. But, Randle was only 1 of 2 double digit scorers. Kentucky shot just 38% from the field and had an inverted 8/15 Assist/TO ratio. Wichita is clearly the better fundamental team, but with the pressure of 35 consecutive wins against, by far the toughest foe they have faced in 3 months, they will be fortunate to get this narrow victory. One additional note finds the Shockers playing their 5th consecutive game on this Scott Trade Center floor, where they won the MVC CCT. Also, must not ignore the fact that Kentucky HC Calipari is 39-24 ATS dog and will relish the challenge of this role in facing undefeated Wichita.

Baylor vs. Creighton (-3) 5:40 ET TRU San Antonio, TX

4% Baylor (+3)

The Blue Jays used a fast start by McDermott and a 2nd half surge to hold off LA Lafayette (76-66) for a win, no cover. Creighton outshot the Cajuns 52 to 38% and were their usual efficient selves with an 18/6 TO margin. But, they need to look no further than their 11-21 performance from the stripe to see why they were unable to cover the 13 ½ impost. A case could be made for the fact that the Blue Jays had become a bit overrated. Since standing 13-5 ATS on January 25th, Creighton has gone just 5-9 ATS. Today’s opponent is surging in the opposite direction. After an 88-72 loss at Oklahoma on February 8th, the Bears stood 2-8 SU in Big 12 play. Since that time, however, Baylor has gone 11-2 SU, 9-3 ATS, including their wire-to-wire romp (74-60) over Nebraska. It was keyed by their control of the boards with a +11 rebound margin. Yet, the only thing that made the highlight reel from that game was Nebraska’s HC Miles being tossed for arguing the shot clock malfunction. San Antonio venue is a clear positive for Baylor, who is an underrated team at an underdog price.

N. Carolina vs. Iowa St. (-1-) 3:15 ET CBS San Antonio, TX

3% Iowa St. (-1-)

Injury to Iowa St. star, Niang, could be the FCB (Final Crushing Blow) for this Cyclone team. That doesn’t mean, however, that they cannot rally for one emotional win without one of their key contributors. Friday’s opponent, NC Central, was being touted as a real sleeper, with a fantastic defense. The Cyclones blew them away (93-75), outshooting them 64 to 46%, with a 21/9 Assist/TO ratio. The Clones controlled the boards with a +12 rebound margin, knocked down 9 triples, and had 5 players score 15 or more points. It resulted in our Top Play Friday night winner. Far more impressed than with a N. Carolina team, who was life and death before escaping Providence (79-77) in the win, no cover. The 9-0 SU ATS February run by the Heels has left them a bit overrated, as indicated by their 0-6 ATS log since the end of that streak. Look for an emotional performance by Iowa St. in response to losing one of their star players.

Gonzaga vs. Arizona (-6-) 7:40 ET TBS San Diego, CA

3% Gonzaga (+6-)

We might normally look to fade a worse-seeded underdog following an underdog victory in Round 1. But, only the linemaker considered Oklahoma St. to be the superior team in that matchup. This bureau profited with a Top Play Winner on the Zags. In that 85-77 victory, the Zags outshot the Cowboys 52 to 40%. In a game marred by poor officiating (there were 78 FTs attempted), Gonzaga held sway with 4 players scoring 12 or more points. Interior force Karnowski had a 15/10 night, while Pangos led all scorers with 26. Arizona was equally impressive in their 68-59 win, no cover, vs. Weber St. Arizona outshot Weber 55 to 30%. Five players scored 9 or more points. But in a microcosm of the Achilles Heel, that will eventually doom these Wildcats; they went just 9-16 ATS from the stripe. That is symbolic of their 65% foul shooting for the year. Though their outstanding defense, which allows 58/38/31, may win the day for them, it is the underrated Zags who may get the money with their own defense that allows just 65/39/32. Must not ignore the fact that 15th year Gonzaga HC Few is 43-30 ATS in the underdog role.

Stephen F. Austin vs. UCLA (-8-) 5:10 ET TBS San Diego, CA

2% Stephen F. Austin (+8-)

In the Winning Sports Advice App (a FREE download in the ITunes store) Blog Talk Radio Show, I was asked to isolate a pair of non-lined teams who might appear in the Round of 32. It appears I have correctly answered with the schools named Mercer and Stephen F. Austin. The Jacks underwent a coaching change from former mentor, Kaspar (now Texas St.) to Brad Underwood, the former S. Carolina Asst. But SFA never skipped a beat. With 29 consecutive victories, they enter today at 32-2 SU, after surviving havoc. What a survival it was! Trailing by 4 with the clock running out, the Jacks got fouled on a made 3 point attempt, cashed the charity toss for a 4 point play to tie the game, and eventually win in OT. These numbers don’t lie. SFA allows just 63 PPG, is +4.7 rebound margin, has a 16.6/11.2 Assist/TO ratio, and forces 16.4 TOs per game. On Friday night, I paid the price for fading UCLA HC Alford, who ran his pointspread mark to 136-90 ATS, including 22-12 ATS TY, and 4-0 SU ATS of late. What was I thinking? We may pay the price again as the Bruins were outstanding in their 76-59 victory over Tulsa, in which they had their usual 17/10 Assist/TO margin and placed 4 scorers in double digits. But, you will be fading the Lumberjacks at your own peril. In that 77-75 survival against havoc, SFA shot 53% with primetime performersWalkup posting a 12/10 night, Haymon a 17/7 night, and Parker leading all scorers with 22 points.

They are horrendous versus teams with a winning record. Brooklyn only 13-20 on the road too. Dallas is healthy and playing well plus stand 12-4 their last 16 home meetings with the Nets. The Mavs are red hot from downtown nailing 46.3 percent from the 3-point line in their last five games. The Nets are 2-11 ATS this year after going ‘OVER’ in two or more consecutive games.
