MLB teams dealing with major roster turnover

The 2014 major league season has kicked off in earnest - and for several teams, that means the clock is ticking on integrating a handful of new players into their respective lineups.

Whether it's a revamped middle of the order or a retooled starting rotation, these teams look vastly different from a season ago. Whether the offseason facelift leads to success or failure remains to be seen, but credit the clubs in this list for taking a shot at reaching the World Series.

Here are four teams that went through major reconstructive surgery in the offseason:

Miami Marlins

As you might have guessed, the Marlins went into the winter acknowledging that their major league-worst offense needed a major overhaul. So, they went out and upgraded their lineup with the additions of third baseman Casey McGehee, Garrett Jones and Jarrod Saltalamacchia; the trio batted 4-5-6 in the Miami lineup in its season-opening 10-1 win over Colorado. The Marlins also nabbed infielder Rafael Furcal, but he'll begin the season on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

Seattle Mariners

The Mariners may still be the odds-on favorite to finish at the bottom of the American League West, but it won't be for lack of trying. The Mariners made the biggest free-agent splash of the offseason with the signing of second baseman Robinson Cano - and they weren't done there, adding Corey Hart, John Buck, Logan Morrison and Willie Bloomquist while handing the closer job to fireballer Fernando Rodney. Cano is far and away the biggest X-factor here, but the strengthening of several other positions should bode well for the up-and-coming Mariners.

New York Yankees

The Yankees don't often carry their roster over from one year to the next - and 2014 is no exception. The Bronx Bombers bade farewell to Cano, Curtis Granderson, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte and a handful of others while adding Japanese hurler Masahiro Tanaka, outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran and catcher Brian McCann. While the influx of talent should help the Yankees contend in the ultra-competitive American League East, they remain the majors' oldest team with an average age north of 31.

Texas Rangers

The Rangers purged their roster more than any American League contender, getting rid of Ian Kinsler, Nelson Cruz, Joe Nathan, A.J. Pierzynski, Matt Garza and others. In to replace them are slugging first baseman Prince Fielder, outfielder Shin-Soo Choo and catcher J.P. Arencibia. Texas has depth and farm system to absorb major personnel losses like this, and Fielder and Choo should do a terrific job replacing the lost offense; the only concern - and it's a major one - is a starting rotation ravaged by injuries.

Game of the Day: Bruins at Red Wings

Boston Bruins at Detroit Red Wings (+129, 5.5)

The rampaging Boston Bruins haven't lost in regulation or on the road in a month and will put both streaks on the line when they visit the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night. The Bruins are closing in on wrapping up the top seed in the Eastern Conference and hold a one-point lead over St. Louis in the race for the Presidents' Trophy. Boston is 15-0-1 since losing to Washington on March 1 and notched its franchise-record ninth straight road victory with a shootout win at Philadelphia on Sunday.

Detroit, which is a potential first-round playoff opponent of the Bruins, could receive a major boost in its bid to reach the postseason for a record 23rd consecutive time with Pavel Datsyuk expected to return to the lineup Wednesday or Friday. The Red Wings own a one-point lead over Columbus for the top wild card in the East despite a string of injuries that has gutted their roster. Detroit has won six of the past seven meetings against the Bruins, including a 6-1 thrashing at home on Nov. 27.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, TSN2, RDS

LINE HISTORY: The line opened with the Red Wings as +129 home dogs. The total is set at 5.5.

INJURY REPORT: Detroit: C Pavel Datsyuk - questionable (knee)

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "We'll see if a perfect 2-0 weekend serves to galvanize a Wings squad that is in desperate need of a boost," says Covers Expert Sean Murphy.

WHY BET THE BRUINS (52-17-6): Patrice Bergeron extended his goal-scoring streak to seven games in Sunday's win - one shy of the club record set by Cam Neely in December 1990. Named the NHL's Second Star of the Week after scoring in all four games, Bergeron also owns an eight-game point streak and is within four goals of his career-best total of 31 set with Boston in 2005-06. Forward Jarome Iginla, named the league's First Star of the Month after scoring 13 goals to push his career mark to 560, is one shy of surpassing Guy Lafleur and moving into a tie with Mike Modano for 23rd place on the all-time list.

WHY BET THE RED WINGS (35-26-14): Detroit has posted back-to-back wins following a three-game losing streak and is looking forward to the return of Datsyuk, who has been sidelined since Feb. 27 with a left knee injury. “He’s one of the best two-way players in the game," goaltender Jimmy Howard said of Datsyuk, who is listed as a game-time decision. "We could definitely use him.” Datsyuk, who said he was encouraged after going through a full practice on Tuesday, has appeared in only five games since Jan. 1 - accumulating one assist - but has registered 15 goals and 18 assists in 39 games this season.

TRENDS:

* Under is 10-4-1 in the last 15 meetings.
* Bruins are 1-6 in the last seven meetings.
* Red Wings are 5-1 in their last six games vs. the Atlantic Division.
* Over is 18-3-5 in Bruins last 26 games vs. the Eastern Conference.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Seventy percent of wagers are on the Bruins -140.

A's, Indians to play two Wednesday after washout

For the first time in Oakland Coliseum history, there will be a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday.

The Oakland A's were rained out Tuesday for the first time at home since May 5, 1998, so they will play the Cleveland Indians twice to finish the season-opening series. The games will be at 12:30 and 6 p.m. PDT.

The Indians are sticking with their scheduled starters, Corey Kluber -- who was slated to go on Tuesday -- and Zach McAllister, in that order. But the A's will mix things up because they do not have a day off later in the week.

Scott Kazmir, who played for the Indians last season, will start the first game -- he had been on tap to go Tuesday.

Jesse Chavez was scheduled to start Wednesday for Oakland, but by pushing him to Thursday, the A's will have enough starters for the rest of the week. They will bring up a starter from Triple-A Sacramento for the second game against the Indians. In split doubleheaders, teams are allowed to add a 26th man to the roster.

Dodgers' Kershaw faces 2-3 weeks of rehab

Los Angeles ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw will need another two to three weeks of rehab before a swollen muscle in his upper back is re-evaluated, the Dodgers announced Tuesday.

Kershaw was placed on the disabled list Sunday and is eligible to be activated on April 14, but it is unlikely that the 2013 National League Cy Young Award winner will be ready to pitch, according to manager Don Mattingly.

"This thing is going to take some time," Mattingly said.

Kershaw's rehab will include a submaximal throwing program for the next two to three weeks. Mattingly expects Kershaw to make a rehab start before returning to the Dodgers' rotation.

An MRI revealed Kershaw's injury after he was scratched from a scheduled start on Sunday night against the San Diego Padres.

Siena (+8) won 61-57 at Fresno State Monday, in first of best-of-3 CBI final, after trailing by six at halftime. Saints have now won eight of last nine games, but this game will be played in the on-campus ARC instead of the arena downtown where Siena has played home games since 1997. ARC seats around 4,000, is right on campus; game is rumored to be sold out. Siena won its last five home games, with last loss to triple overtime to Canisius. Fresno is 12-4 in its last 16 games, winning three of its last four true road games; they were -8 (16-8) in turnovers Monday, missed 11 of 16 3's, losing despite shooting 57% inside the arc

On Wednesday the free MLB Play is on the NY. Yankees. Game 925 at 8:10 eastern. The Yankees may be too high of a favorite for unit rated status. However they are the right side here as they are off a 6-2 loss last night and are 14-6 as a road favorite from-150 to -175 and 8-0 as a road favorite off a road favored loss dating to last season. The Astros are 1-6 here vs the Yankkes and took advantage of C.C Sabathia who had low velocity last night. The Astros are 1-8 as a home dog off a home dog win and will face Kuroda tonight who is 7-3 in road April starts and 7-1 vs Houston. In his last 3 starts vs the Astros he has gone 21 scoreless innings. The Astros counter with J. Cosart who allowed 7 runs in his 11 innings here at home spanning 3 starts. Look for the NY .Yankees to bounce back tonight. On Hump day we will get you on the giving end with the 7* NBA Game of the Year from a huge perfect system that wins by over 24 points per game. There is a sweet 42-6 angle in this game too. In College Hoops we cashed our top play on Yale last night. Tonight we have a 5* 100% System in the CBI Tournament game. 2 UNIT = New York Yankees @ Houston Astros - UNDER 8.5 RUNS (+102)
Listed Pitchers: Kuroda vs Cosart
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 2.04 units)

The Astros opened the season with a 6-2 victory last night, as they got to C.C Sabathia early and often. The Yankees were held to just 6 hits on the night and scored their 2 runs in the 8th inning off the bullpen. Tonight might be another tough night at the dish for the Yankees as they face young stud Jarred Cosart, who will pitch his first full season in the bigs. Cosart came up to pitch 10 starts at the end of last season and went 1-1 with a 1.95 ERA, .220 OBA and 1.35 WHIP during that stretch. He looks ready for the season, as he held opponents to a .159 batting average in 12 innings pitched during the spring. Tonight he will face Hiroki Kuroda who is coming off a season where he went 11-13 with a 3.31 ERA, .249 OBA and 1.16 WHIP. Kuroda has had a lot of success against Houston going 4-0 in 8 strats vs them lifetime with a 1.39 ERA, .195 OBA and 1.01 WHIP. That inclues one starts vs the Astros in 2013 where he went 7 innings giving up just 4 hits and 0 runs. Take note that the UNDER is 22-7-2 in Kuroda's last 31 road starts and 44-17-3 in his last 64 starts overall. The UNDER is 5-2 in Cosarts last 7 starts as an underdog, and 4-0 in these two teams last 4 meetings. Take the UNDER in this one tonight.

Game: Kansas City Royals @ Detroit Tigers
Time: Wednesday 04/02 1:05 PM Eastern
Pick: Kansas City +175 (moneyline) at Bovada

The Kansas City Royals have been down for many years, but they might be ready to contend this season. They made a lot of progress a year ago, and have playoff aspirations this season. The task will be difficult against Max Scherzer, a 21-game winner a year ago. This is a new season, and things are based on last year, which will be hard for him to duplicate. Vargas is an upgrade in the rotation for the Royals and is certainly is capaable of keeping them in the game here. The Royals bounced back off a loss late last season by going 10-2 in their last 12, and this once fragile team has grown up. The line is too steep here, as the gap is not as wide as it appears. Take Kansas City.

Playing Baltimore here as we have a pitcher, Ubaldo, who's stock is about as low as it will go. That being said, I think the WRONG team is favored here as Lackey (aside from late last season), has been marginal at best and really quite hittable. I'm taking the Orioles here, as the home dog, to get the 'W'. It may be higher scoring that we would like...but I think that the Orioles can get their runs off Lackey enough to warrant a 2* play.

Good pitching matchup here tonight between the Mets' Bartolo Colon, making his first career start for the Mets, vs. Gio Gonzalez for the Nationals. Gonzalez has been really solid during his career at Citi Field, going 5-0 with a 1.63 ERA in his last six starts versus the Mets, including 16 consecutive scoreless innings. Even with that under consideration, we are going to look the other way tonight as only three of the Nationals hitters have ever faced Colon in a game. We think that lack of comfort facing Colon works in the Mets favor, as well as getting Daniel Murphy and Chris Young back in the lineup tonight. Let's roll with the Mets to even up this series tonight. The Sharps say...

Game: Chicago Bulls @ Atlanta Hawks
Time: Wednesday 04/02 7:35 PM Eastern
Pick: Chicago -125 (moneyline) at 5Dimes

The Chicago Bulls have had a lot of obstacles this season, two of which are playing no Derrick Rose, and Luol Deng on the floor. It took awhile, but the Bulls are 33-16 over their last 49 games. Once upon a time, Atlanta was one of three NBA Eastern Conference teams above .500, but this team has slipped in a big way and is now nine games under .500 and are fighting for their playoffs lives. The Hawks broke a six game losing streak, but how much stock can you put into a win over Philadelphia at this point of the season? The Hawks have not even been close to competitive vs. a winning team, and if you want a most revealing stat then consider the fact that Atlanta is 1-18 straight-up in their last 19 games vs. a winning team. Chicago comes away with the road win, so play the Bulls on the moneyline.
