Game of the Day: Knicks at Heat

New York Knicks at Miami Heat (-7, 187)

Sitting on the periphery of the Eastern Conference playoff race, the New York Knicks can't afford another loss the rest of the way. They'll be in for one of the biggest challenges of the season Sunday afternoon as they face the conference-leading Heat in Miami. New York is coming off a 90-89 heartbreaker to the Washington Wizards on Friday night and enters Sunday's action one game behind the Atlanta Hawks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.

Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony indicated that he will play against the Heat after suffering what was termed a "deep bruise" in his right shoulder in the contest against Washington. Miami is in a battle of its own, sitting mere percentage points ahead of the Indiana Pacers in the race for the No. 1 seed in the conference. The Heat lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves 122-121 in double overtime on Friday night despite 34 points from LeBron James.

TV: 1 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY: The Heat opened as 6.5-point home faves and are currently at -7. The total opened at 189 and is down to 187.

INJURY WATCH: New York: F Carmelo Anthony - probable Sunday (shoulder). Miami: G Dwyane Wade Doubtful Sunday (hamstring), C Greg Oden questionable (back)

COVERS POWER RANKINGS: New York (-5.3) - Miami (-13.8) + home court (-3) = Miami -11.5

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "If they were to finish first in the Eastern Conference, the Heat would be a shoo-in for the NBA Finals, no? Their last four wins have come by an average of 21 PPG," says Covers Expert Bryan Power.

WHY BET THE KNICKS (34-43 ATS): New president of basketball operations Phil Jackson may clean house at the end of the season - and the first to depart may be head coach Mike Woodson. While Jackson goes on a "talent hunt," according to a report in the New York Post, he has apparently done little talking with Woodson, who is expected to take the fall for the team's struggles. "We haven't had any conversations," Woodson said. "My focus mainly has been on getting the team in the playoffs and when that time comes, it will happen."

WHY BET THE HEAT (35-38-2ATS): James has had to carry the bulk of the scoring load while swingman Dwyane Wade continues to recover from hamstring and Achilles injuries. Wade remains without a timetable to return, but James said his teammate is "looking better and better every day" and believes that "probably within the next week he should be back on the floor." Wade has been limited to 51 games this season but has been effective in limited action, averaging 19.2 points, 4.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Miami.
* Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Under is 15-5-1 in the last 21 meetings.
* Knicks are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings in Miami.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Fifty-five percent of the wagers are on the Heat -6.5.

Anthony also played in Friday's 90-89 loss the Washington Wizards, but clearly struggled. He scored just 10 points on five-for-14 shooting with eight rebounds and five assists. However, he attempted no free throws and committed nine turnovers.

NASCAR heads to Texas for Sunday’s race
By Brian Graham

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Duck Commander 500

Sunday, April 6 – 3:00 p.m. EDT
Texas Motor Speedway – Fort Worth, TX
The NASCAR field heads to Fort Worth for Sunday’s Duck Commander 500 race at Texas Motor Speedway. This 1.5-mile intermediate track was built in 1996 as a quad-oval with 24-degree banking on the turns. The straights are just five degrees of banking and measure at 2,250 feet (or 0.43 miles) and 1,330 feet (0.25 miles).

This track has had a different winner in nine of the past 11 starts in Fort Worth. Denny Hamlin and defending track champion Jimmie Johnson are the only two-time winners during this stretch. Kyle Busch is the defending champion of this spring race, as he won from the pole at this track last April, while Johnson won the November race in Texas.

Odds to Win Race

Driver Odds

Kyle Busch 7-to-1

Drivers to Watch

Carl Edwards (20/1) - Edwards has some outstanding odds for Sunday considering he has six top-3 finishes in his career in Fort Worth, including three victories (2005 and twice in 2008). Not including his four DNFs at this track, his average finish in the 14 career Texas races he actually finished is an impressive 9.7. Edwards has also been rolling all season with four top-10′s in his six starts, including a win in Bristol, to put him third in the current point standings. At 20-to-1 odds, the No. 99 car should get your largest wager of the weekend, as he is our pick to take home the checkered flag.

Denny Hamlin (15/1) – Hamlin has great value for Sunday’s race, as his average career finish at Texas is 12.3, which ranks third among active drivers. This includes his back-to-back wins in 2010, plus three other top-5 showings, and last fall he finished 7th at this track. Hamlin has also given himself great starting positions all season with a 9.2 average, including three top-4 starts, which is important because 77 percent of Fort Worth race winners have started among the top-10. Go ahead and place a small wager on this quasi-darkhorse for Sunday.

Matt Kenseth (7/1) - The reason why Kenseth’s odds are so low is due to his dominance at this track. In 23 career Texas starts, he has 13 top-5 finishes including a pair of wins (2002, 2011). His 8.3 average finish in Fort Worth leads all active drivers, and he’s led at least one lap of a Texas race 16 times in his career. Kenseth loves the distance of this track with 19 career wins on 1-to-2 mile speedways such as Texas. The No. 20 car is also off to a fast start to the 2014 season, ranking second in the points standings with top-6 showings in three of his six starts. Of the six drivers with single-digit odds for this race, Kenseth is the safest wager.

Greg Biffle (30/1) - The darkhorse pick of the weekend has to go to Biffle at 30-to-1, which is quite a drop from his 7-to-1 price at this race last spring. Not only does Biffle hold the Texas Motor Speedway record with his 160.577 mph average during his 2012 victory, but he has not placed worse than 12th in 11 straight starts at Fort Worth. His average finish during this stretch has been an impressive 6.1, and he has led multiple laps in seven of these 11 races. Of his 19 career wins, 63% (12) have come on speedways measuring between one and two miles, and his 18 laps led in Martinsville last week shows that he’s starting to bust out of his slump to start the 2014 season (18th in points standings, 19.5 average finish).

Austin Dillon (100/1) – The best longshot on the board for Sunday’s race is Dillon, who has been consistently strong this season, with only one finish outside the top-15. He’s been able to greatly out-race his starting position in three straight starts, with an average starting position of 27th place and an average finish of 12th place. He’s made only two career starts in Fort Worth, but showed great improvement with a 22nd-place showing last November after a weak 33rd-place finish last spring. With triple-digit odds for Sunday, the 25-year-old is certainly worthy of a one-unit wager.

If both teams had no more than 1 error in their last game the system is cashing around 85%. The Padres are have not hit yet and are under .180 through the first week. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES -130

Burnett/Villanueva
The Cubs are a bad baseball team that just can’t put up runs. Until Vegas adjust the price in their games why not keep going against them? The Phillies will start 37 year old AJ Burnett today. If the Cubs can’t hit him them you know they are in for a long year. The Phillies will struggle this year, but this Cubs team is the worst in baseball and at this price you fade them until they prove you wrong. Take the Phillies.

double-dime bet – 920 TOR (-123) vs 919 NYY
Analysis: 920 NY Yankees at Toronto

The Toronto Blue Jays will look for a series victory with Drew Hutchison on the mound against CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees. Hutchison won a starting rotation gig with a strong Spring Training and carried it over into the regular season with a strong 5.1 shutout innings against the Rays in his first outing.

We’re getting some additional value with Hutchison because of his control concerns in his first start. He struck out four and walked three, but that was out of the norm for Hutchison. What got Hutchison to this point was his excellent control, posting a 4.06 K/BB ratio over 270 minor league innings. Hutchison’s velocity is right around or above his pre-Tommy John surgery level.

CC Sabathia has seen a major drop in his velocity over the last couple of years. That loss of velocity has given his pitches less separation, resulting in an increase of home runs allowed and a decrease of strikeouts. Sabathia is not the pitcher that he once was and it seems that his skills really are regressing. Sabathia will turn 34 this season and entered this year with over 2700 innings of work.

Another element of this game that gives the Blue Jays an edge is in the bullpen. The Jays have several reliable relievers, while the Yankees are desperately trying to find somebody who can bridge the gap from the starter to David Robertson. It’s an extremely young, inexperienced group and the Jays will have the upper hand if it comes down to the bullpens.

Game: Oklahoma City Thunder @ Phoenix Suns
Time: Sunday 04/06 9:05 PM Eastern
Pick: Oklahoma City -2.5 (-108) at 5Dimes

A short price on Oklahoma City, the No. 2 seed in the West. They are off a loss, but that was a tired situational spot and the Thunder is 11-5-2 ATS following a defeat. Oklahoma City is fifth in the NBA in scoring, 10th in points allowed, and tops in the West in field goal shooting defense allowing 43.3% shooting (third best in the NBA). The Thunder is 15-5-1 ATS playing on one days rest. Phoenix is fighting for its playoff life, but are not a strong defensive team; 21st in points allowed, 16th in field goal shooting defense. The Suns are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a win of more than 10 points. And when these teams meet, the Thunder is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings, the road team is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings, and OKC is 6-1 ATS at Phoenix. Play Oklahoma City.

Phoenix Suns +2.5 (Buy to +3 for -120)

I really like the Suns in this spot. Desperate for the win to potentially jump into the 8th seed in the West plus OKC comes in banged up. Perkins and Westbrook may play tonight but both guys are nursing injuries and the effectiveness will be in question.

Yea, Durant is on an epic run and will probably score over 25 points again for the 41st straight time but remember, the last time OKC went to Phoenix they lost by 6 and Westrbook ped 36 points in that game to go along with 9 assists. Even if he plays tonight, I do not see him putting up those type of numbers.

2nd straight road game for OKC and pretty much a lock for the 2 seed in the West with 2 games in hand over the Clippers, I feel Phoenix will be the more inspired team and getting them at +3 is a solid move.
