This week's best NBA spot bet opportunites
Steve Merril

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Steve Merril points out the best spot bet opportunities on the NBA schedule this week.

Letdown spot

Miami has a tough schedule this week that includes four games against playoff-caliber teams. The Heat open things at home on Tuesday night against Brooklyn, and then travel for a game on Wednesday night in Memphis. Their showdown game against Indiana comes on Friday night before concluding the week in Atlanta on Saturday.

The Heat will be looking to avenge an 84-83 loss to the Pacers on Friday night. If Miami is successful in doing so, then their game the very next night in Atlanta will be a certified letdown spot. Miami will also be playing their fourth game in five nights, so their game against the Hawks also comes in a difficult scheduling spot.

Look-ahead spot

The San Antonio Spurs have three games this week with two on the road and one at home. The Spurs will play in Minnesota on Tuesday night and in Dallas on Thursday. San Antonio then returns home to host Phoenix on Friday night.

San Antonio beat both the Timberwolves and Mavericks the last time they played, but they got blown out by 21 points (106-85) in Phoenix. San Antonio only has two losses over their last 25 games coming into Tuesday’s game, and the rematch game versus the Suns is one the Spurs have circled. San Antonio will be looking to atone for that loss to Phoenix, so they may lack focus the night before in Dallas.

Schedule spot

The Houston Rockets will play four games this week with three of those games on the road. They open the week on Tuesday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers, and then play the next night in Denver. The Rockets play in Minnesota on Friday night before finishing the week at home on Saturday night against New Orleans.

Houston’s trouble spot comes in that Saturday night home game versus the Pelicans. The Rockets will be playing on a back-to-back set and it will also be their third game in four nights and their fourth game in five nights overall. Houston will likely go thru the motions against New Orleans on Saturday night.

Game of the Day: Nets at Heat

Brooklyn Nets at Miami Heat

The Brooklyn Nets have spent the last few months proving they belong among the elite teams in the Eastern Conference. The Nets will get a chance to make their case once again when they visit the Miami Heat on Tuesday. Brooklyn won each of the first three meetings with the Heat and owns a 32-13 record in 2014 while East-leading Miami is 29-16 in that span with a pair of losses to the Nets.

The Heat appear to have recovered completely from their rough stretch in March and tried to damage the New York Knicks’ playoff dreams with a 102-91 home victory on Sunday. Miami is a game up on the Indiana Pacers for the top spot in the East - two games clear in the loss column - and will get Indiana at home on Friday after a tough back-to-back against Brooklyn and at Memphis. The Nets are still clinging to the hope that they can catch Toronto for the top spot in the Atlantic Division and homecourt advantage in the first round. They sit 2 1/2 games back in that race with six left.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, Sun Sports (Miami)

LINE HISTORY: Suggested lines out of Las Vegas have the Heat as 6.5-point home faves with a total of 196.

INJURY REPORT: Heat - G Dwyane Wade (Questionable, hamstring), C Greg Oden (Questionable, back), F Chris Andersen (Questionable, back). Nets - F Kevin Garnett (Out, back)

WHY BET THE NETS (42-34 SU, 41-35 ATS, 38-34-4 O/U): Brooklyn got Kevin Garnett (back spasms) back from a 19-game absence on Sunday and the veteran worked his way into game action with 10 points and four rebounds in 13 minutes during a 105-101 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. Garnett is not expected to play on Tuesday but should be back for the second half of the Florida trip at Orlando on Wednesday and is following a strict plan to get back in game shape for the postseason. “Obviously, I’m not where I want to be, but I felt good, I felt strong,” Garnett told reporters. “It’s been a journey to get back to this point, so I’m just trying to contribute at this point.”

WHY BET THE HEAT (53-23 SU, 36-38-2 ATS, 41-35 O/U): Miami is hoping to get one of its own stars healthy for the playoffs in Dwyane Wade, who has missed the last six games with a hamstring injury. The Heat are 5-1 in that span, and LeBron James is carrying the load by putting up at least 32 points in three of the last four games. The superstar put up 38 points in Sunday’s 102-91 triumph. Miami’s best work lately has come on the defensive end, where they have held opponents to an average of 79.2 points in the last five victories.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Miami.
* Home team is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Nets are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.
* Heat are 6-0 ATS in their last six vs. Eastern Conference.

Welcome to Masters Week everyone! This week we have the first major of the year and arguably the most prestigious. 96 of the world's best will be hoping Adam Scott puts a green jacket on them to cap off a spectacular week. Adam on the other hand, will be hoping to retain the green jacket and capture his 2nd Masters title.

The first ever Masters champion was Horton Smith in 1934. Since that inaugural win, the mystique and excitement surrounding the Masters has grown with each year. Champions like Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player have all won the green jacket multiple times. The past twelve years we have seen we have seen two men dominate the Masters, Tiger and Phil. The past three Champions however have been first time major Champions.

We have correctly selected four of the past five Masters Champions (only one we missed was Charl Schwartzel) (Includes Angel Cabrera at 125 to 1 in 2009). The past two years it has been won in a playoff, which has made it extra thrilling. I absolutely love this tournament and look forward to another Green Jacket.

ABOUT AUGUSTA

Augusta is a Par 72, 7435-yard course, which demands players are at the top of their game. The course is one of the most stunningly beautiful places in the entire world (It actually almost looks fake it's so perfect). Since the course has been lengthened, people have said that it has turned into a bombers course. Zach Johnson however used the approach of laying up on every Par 5 in the 2007 Masters and took the Championship.

My favorite hole on the course is the 170 yard Par 3 16th; a hole that has seen its fair share of excitement. The most famous shot on the 16th occurred in the 2005 Masters when Tiger hit a chip shot witnessed around the world. Woods chipped it to the upper shelf of the green (past the hole) and watched as the ball made a U-Turn and headed back towards the hole. The ball rested on the edge of the cup for what seemed like an eternity, only to roll in for an amazing birdie. If you are looking to see a hole in one at the Masters, the 16th is a great place to park your seat. Look for the 15th (reachable Par5) and the 16th to make a difference come Sunday.

The 11th Hole I feel is the most difficult hole on the course, and the beginning to Amen corner. A 505-yard, tree lined Par 4, forces players to be very accurate off the tee. A pond guards the left side of the green and you will see many shots this week come up short and to the right (in a large swale). Look for plenty of bogeys this week on number 11.

PLAYERS FOR THE 2014 MASTERS

97 players have the opportunity to win the Masters at the start of the week (Though I would not put my money on Ben Crenshaw, even if he is paying out 5000/1). The Masters will have a slew of players making their first appearance at the storied event. Only one player in the last 77 years has won the event when competing for his first time (Fuzzy Zoeller 1979). Players such as Stephen Gallacher, Patrick Reed, and Harris English will all be trying to become the first man since Fuzzy to achieve such a feat.

Large swarms of people will be following players like Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson and for good reason. The fact that Tiger is not playing will unfortunately be a large part of the storyline, but plenty of amazing golfers will be playing. People are very intrigued by the up and coming stars golf has produced over the past few seasons, and I feel that will be most noteworthy at the end of the week.

Finally, will this be the year Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia or Luke Donald wins his first major. The three best players in the world who have not won a major have all enjoyed previous success here at Augusta. Sergio is the 6th ranked player, Luke is the 27th ranked player in the world, and Lee has fallen recently to 37th. The fact that none of these men have won a major, speaks volumes to the difficulty of the task.

STEVES SIX PACK

We go with a combination of previous success here mixed with some young players playing well. I also really like one long shot who's game suits Augusta perfectly.

HUNTER MAHAN 50/1 - Hunter has always been extremely criticized for his short game and that was never more evident than in the 2010 Ryder Cup when he flubbed a chip in the final match. This match decided the Ryder Cup and it really hurt Hunter, as he felt responsible (which is ridiculous but you can understand his point of view). After that Hunter focused all his attention on improving his game around the greens, and it worked. Hunter's last win came at the 2012 Shell Houston Open, but he is trending towards another one.

Mahan has posted Top 10's in 50% of his starts this season. He is gearing his game towards his first major and the Masters is the perfect place for that to happen. In the past five seasons at Augusta he has three finishes inside the Top 12. I find it very surprising that people are not discussing Hunter as a possible winner this week. Now that his short game is in a good place, I feel that he is a perfect fit to be wearing the Green jacket at weeks end. Mahan is one of the best drivers of the golf ball on Tour as he ranks 14th in Total driving. If you put yourself in a good position off the tee at Augusta it is a massive advantage. Hunter will utilize this great driving and be in contention for his first major on Sunday.

CHARL SCHWARTZEL 38/1 - Charl could not ask for a more perfect fit than Augusta. He displayed how much he loves this course in 2011 when he birdied the final four holes to finish two shots clear of Jason Day and Adam Scott. Charl will be confident stepping on the first tee this week, as he played well at his tune up last week (Shell Houston Open). He was one of the players out there trying to get his game ready for the Masters, and you will see this week his game looks great.

Charl currently sits 6th on the Race to Dubai rankings and has looked on point all season. He is one of the best drivers of the golf ball combining extreme length with good accuracy. Charl is averaging over 307 yards off the tee on the European Tour, and this helps him hit over 70% of his Greens in Regulation. A key to Augusta is taking advantage of your Par 5's and holding even on your Par 3's and 4's. Charl played the Par 5's 9 under in 2011 and I really expect him to equal that mark or possibly improve upon it. South African's have been near the top of Major leaderboards recently, and Charl will once again have that flag in contention at Augusta.

STEPHEN GALLACHER 500/1 - I love this selection. Firstly, these odds are outrageous (also expect them to drop so get this in quickly - but still great value at 200/1+). Gallacher is the 38th ranked player in the world, and will improve that this week. He beat the worlds best down the stretch just over two months ago at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic (Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were actually his partners for the first two rounds). This will be his first appearance at the Masters but that will not phase the 40 year old Scot.

Stephen averages just under 300 yards off the tee and hits 73% of his Greens in Regulation. He is coming off a T6 finish at the Cadillac Championship in his last start on United States soil. Look for him to tee the ball up with confidence and have people talking this week at Augusta. Gallacher plays well on difficult courses and I really feel he possess the ability to not let the big moment get to him. Obviously the majors are a different hurdle, but at 40 years old Stephen is not a young kid. It has been a slew of first time major winners over the past 4 years and I feel Stephen could be a diamond in the rough this week.

PATRICK REED 65/1 - A man winning the Masters wearing red on Sunday in 2014, I can see it happening. A few months ago everyone would have thought that meant Tiger Woods, but instead it will be Patrick Reed. Reed is one of the hottest players on the planet in 2014, and picked up a win at his second WGC event just over a month ago ( Cadillac Championship ). Much was made after this victory when Patrick stated that he was a top 5 talent in the world.

Reed is confident in himself and I appreciate that. I have no problem with him saying that he is a top 5 player because you must have that mindset to actually be one. Patrick is going to prove to people this week that he was correct in stating that to the world. Reed showed signs of nervousness down the stretch off the tee but his short game was outstanding. Getting up and down when the tournament is on the line is something very few can do, and Reed proved he could. Now watch him in his first Major appearance dawn his red shirt on Sunday and have Adam Scott put a green jacket on him at weeks end.

HARRIS ENGLISH 70/1- This Georgia man will tee it up in the Masters for the first time. Harris was born, attend school, and currently resides in Georgia, making this a home game for him. He will have plenty of support but with the way he has been playing in 2014, probably won't even need it. Harris has six Top 10's in his thirteen starts of 2014. One of those Top 10's was his second PGA Tour victory, which took place at The OHL Classic of Mayakoba.

English has statistics that most players dream of to start his 2014 season. He is first on Tour for Greens in Regulation, hitting over 73%. Harris ranks 21st for Total Driving and 1st in Scoring Average (actual). English ranks first in Par 4 Performance and 2nd in Par 5 Performance. He is going to be a mainstay atop the PGA Tour for many years to come because he is one of the most talented players in the world. His combination of length off the tee and great short game is very rare, and it will be the reason Harris is contending this week at Augusta.

LEE WESTWOOD 48/1 - The 40 year old is known for his inability to win a Major Championship, but that could change at this Masters. Over Lee's past 22 major Championship's he has 11 Top 10 finishes. Lee has finished inside the Top 11 at The Masters in five of his past six starts at Augusta. He hits the ball a long ways off the tee, and his iron play is some of the best in the world. Lee has always struggled with his chipping and putting, two aspects that have hindered him from holding many Major Championships.

Watch Westwood this week though and you will be impressed at the work he has put into the faults in his golf game. His putting stroke seems much more natural and he has confidence with it. The key to Westwood's game this week will be not short siding himself. Missing the green in the wrong area at Augusta creates nearly impossible shots, something Lee has to avoid. I like the confidence Lee is exuding currently, and he enters on the heels of a T17 at The Shell Houston Open. Westwood has one goal in mind and that is to win a major Championship, a goal that very well could be achieved this week.

HEAD TO HEAD AND PROPS

Below are two props and two head to heads.

One Unit

HOLE IN ONE - We WILL SEE a hole in one in the 2014 Masters tournament. Harris English actually aced number 12 in a practice round on Sunday but you can expect one to happen on Number 16 (probably on Sunday). The pin is put in a funnel and all balls tend to kick of the right side of the green and roll directly towards the hole. This will be enjoyable for the player with the ace, the fans, and us.

** Odds are not currently up at 5dimes (http://www.cappersmall.com/forums/redirect-to/?redirect=http%3A%2F%2Faffiliates.5dimes.com%2Ftra cking%2FAffiliate.asp%3FAffID%3DAF000189%26mediaTy peID%3D220%26AffUrlID%3D229) but are traditionally very close to even money **

One Unit

STEPHEN GALLACHER TOP 10 - 13 TO 1 - We will take Stephen to finish in the Top 10. I am shocked at the odds on Gallacher and will be very surprised if he doesn't play well this week. He is a very solid all around player and his game is suited for Augusta.

Two units

STEPHEN GALLACHER (-120) over Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano - I am not sure what is wrong with Gonzalo this season but he has been plagued with the inability to avoid at least one disastrous round in almost every tournament. In just 24 rounds on the PGA Tour he has carded 76 or higher seven times in 2014 ( Including an 83 at the Farmers Insurance Open). Gonzalo has played in the Masters twice and has finishes of T20 and 61st. In eight rounds at Augusta he has played over Par in seven of them. Stephen will be making his first start but is in great form and his game should suit the course beautifully.

Two Units

LEE WESTWOOD (-110) over Luke Donald - This match pits two players who both have enjoyed success at Augusta and desperately want a Major Championship. Lee has been much more successful as of late in the Masters and has the edge in this category. Luke just does not hit the ball accurately enough off the tee for how short of a hitter he is. Take Lee to cruise past he good friend Luke and win use this match up, and possibly a Green Jacket.

Enjoy the walk up Magnolia Lane to the years first Major everyone.

Why we like the Brewers on Tuesday at -105…this Brewers team is playing some good baseball at this point in the season coming off of a three game sweep against the Boston Red Sox where they averaged 5.6 RPG and allowed just 2.6 RPG. Coming off of an off-day will also benefit the Brewers as they get an extra day to get situated in Philadelphia for Tuesdays day-game. The Brewers have played 4 day-games in this young season so far, where they have a record of 3-1. This Phillies team comes into Tuesdays game after a 2-3 series against the Cubs where they scored 12 runs and allowed 10 runs. The Brewers will be pitching Kyle Lohse who comes into Tuesdays start after allowed just 3 runs through 7 innings on 5 hits, 2 BBs & 8 Ks in his 2014 debut to the Braves. Lohse made a single start against the Phillies in 2013 where he got the W allowing 1 run through 8 innings on 4 hits, 1 BB & 6 Ks. Lohse last pitched IN Philadelphia in 2012 where he allowed 1 run through 7 innings on 4 hits, 2 BBs & 7 Ks. Kyle Kendrick will be on the bump for the Phillies who is also coming off of a nice 2014 debut against the Rangers. In that start, Kendrick allowed 1 run through 7 innings on 5 hits, 1 BB & 4 Ks. This Brewers team has a combined 73 ABs off of Kendrick where they have a .315 average with 2 HRs. There are two major factors that we consider when fading Kendrick in this game. In 2013, Kendrick saw his era rise from a 4.70 era to a 6.07 era when coming off of 5 Days of Rest which he will be coming in off of on Tuesday. Kendrick was also 0-4 with a 5.87 era during day-games in 2013. The bullpens of these two teams clearly give the Brewers the advantage where they carry a 1.02 era through 17 innings where they have allowed just 1 HR on 4 BBs & 20 Ks. On the road, the Brewers bullpen has a 0.00 era through 11 innings on 3 BBs & 12 Ks. On the other hand, the Phillies bullpen has a 4.02 era through 15 innings where they have allowed 12 BBs & 14 Ks. Play on the Brewers at -105.

Mavericks at Jazz

We have this game pegged at 210 for the total, so we think there is some value here tonight going over the posted total of 199.5. Last five games, the Mavericks are averaging 107.2 ppg and while Utah’s offense has struggled at times this season, Dallas also doesn’t put up a ton of resistance on the defensive end. Both teams are off one night’s rest, so we think you will see a good effort from both. Eric Lewis on the referee assignment tonight, who is an OVER machine! The Sharps say…

Dumars to step down as Pistons President

Joe Dumars has told multiple sources within the NBA that he plans to resign from his role as the Pistons president. According to The Detroit News, the decision could even come as early as this week.

Dumars has had a rough season in Detroit to say the least. After going on an offseason spending spree, the Pistons ended up being abysmal on the court going 28-49 (32-44-1 against the spread).

Lakers: Calipari is not our next coach

Is John Calipari heading from the Bluegrass State to Hollywood?

Former Kentucky basketball star Rex Chapman tweeted Monday that Calipari, the Wildcats' coach, would be the Los Angeles Lakers' next coach.

The Lakers moved quickly to deny the report, which came shortly before Kentucky took on Connecticut in the national championship game at Arlington, Texas.

The Los Angeles Times quoted Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak saying the "rumor is untrue."

Calipari is finishing his fifth season at Kentucky, and he led the Wildcats to the 2012 national title. He previously guided Massachusetts and Memphis to the Final Four, though both of those appearances were later erased due to NCAA violations.

Pucking the trends: NHL weekly betting news and notes

For the week of March 31-April 6.

Hot team

Nashville Predators (2-0 SU)

The Predators weren't busy last week, but they made the most of their reduced schedule by winning a pair of tough road games to remain mathematically alive in the Western Conference playoff hunt. Nashville kicked off the week with an impressive 5-2 triumph over host Anaheim behind a two-goal, one-assist performance from Mike Fisher. The Predators followed that up with a 3-0 triumph in San Jose on the strength of a sensational 35-save effort from backup netminder Carter Hutton.

Cold team

Phoenix Coyotes (0-3 SU)

Phoenix has tumbled out of the Western Conference playoff scene thanks to a four-game losing skid - equaling its longest of the season. This one couldn't have come at a worse time, as the Coyotes now find themselves a point behind eighth-place Dallas with both teams having four games remaining. Phoenix opened the week with a 2-1 shootout loss to the Winnipeg Jets before falling 4-0 in Los Angeles and capping the dreadful stretch with a 3-2 shootout defeat to the lowly Edmonton Oilers.

Best Over play

Chicago Blackhawks (2-0-1 O/U)

Strong "over" results were hard to find this past week, which made the Blackhawks one of the few teams to pay bettors off. Despite playing without injured star forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, Chicago found a way to manufacture enough offense to put together a three-game winning streak, earning a push in a 3-2 shootout win over Minnesota before defeating Columbus 4-3 and topping St. Louis 4-2. The breakout was a critical one for Chicago, which had scored just four goals in its previous three games.

Best Under play

Carolina Hurricanes (0-4 O/U)

The Hurricanes have been the team to bet when it comes to "unders", reeling off six in a row and going 1-10 O/U in their last 11. After dropping a 2-1 shootout decision to the Ottawa Senators to open the week, Carolina rode solid goaltending Anton Khudobin to consecutive 4-1 victories over the Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas Stars. Khudobin was solid again on Saturday, but the Hurricanes offense couldn't support him as they fell 3-1 to New Jersey to fall to a Metropolitan Division-worst 29-42 O/U on the season.

Surveying the schedule

The St. Louis Blues still have the inside track for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference - owning a three-point advantage over Anaheim with four games remaining for each team - and will face four teams outside the top-six in their respective conferences to wrap up the regular season. The Blues open at home against Washington before heading on the road for games in Minnesota and Dallas. The Blues then end the season at home versus Detroit.

This week's best NHL spot bet opportunities

Letdown spot

The Senators haven't done themselves any favors lately, dropping two of their last three games to all but fall out of the playoff picture entirely. They are, however, fresh off a win over the Rangers at MSG on Saturday night.

After being idle for a couple of days in New York, I'm not anticipating the Sens bringing their 'A' game on Tuesday night, as they make the short trip to Long Island. Despite being undermanned, the Isles have been playing well, winners of five of their last seven games overall. I like their chances on home ice in this spot.

Lookahead spot

The Ducks picked up their 50th win of the season last week against Edmonton, but followed it up with a stinker against the Predators, dropping a 5-2 decision on home ice. After playing in Edmonton on Sunday night, they'll move on to Vancouver on Monday.

Note that Anaheim has a bigger game on deck Wedneday night against the rival Sharks in San Jose. It's unlikely we'll see them go full throttle against a Canucks squad they just defeated 5-1 a little over a week ago. The Canucks may be down, but they're not out, as we saw on Saturday when they skated past the surging Kings.

Schedule spot

It's going to be a busy week for the Islanders, and with that in mind, they'll likely find themselves in tough on Friday night in New Jersey.

New York will be playing its fourth game in six nights against the Devils. As I mentioned earlier, the Isles have been playing well, but so have the Devils, and of course New Jersey has more to play for as it fights for its playoff life. The Isles got the better of the Devils back on March 29th on Long Island, but I suspect the shoe will be on the other foot on Friday night.

Kevin's Pick(s):
2 UNIT = Milwaukee Brewers @ Philadelphia Phillies - UNDER 8.5 RUNS (-115)
Listed Pitchers: Lohse vs Kendrick
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.74 units)
The Phillies home opener was pushed back to Tuesday due to rain in the forecast in Monday. This game will take place at 4:05PM EST, and will feature Kyle Lohse vs Kyle Kendrick on the mound. Lohse opened the season vs Atlanta taking a loss, although he pitched well going 7 innings giving up 5 hits and 3 earned runs. He struckout 8 in the game and walked just 2. Lohse owns a 2.98 ERA vs Philadelphia, and has a 3.26 ERA at Citizens Bank Park. Kyle Kendrick pitched well this spring with a 2.81 ERA, .220 OBA and 1.25 WHIP over 16 innings of work. That translated right into his first start where he went 7 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run with 4 strikeouts and a walk vs the Rangers in Texas (facing a DH which he won't be Tuesday). The Brewers have opened the season with 5 of their first 6 games going UNDER the posted total. The Phillies have gone UNDER the total in 4 of their 6 games, and 4 of their last 5 overall. Note that the UNDER is 12-4 in Lohse's last 16 starts as an underdog and 15-5-1 in the Brewers last 21 road games dating back to last season. The UNDER is 6-1-1 in Kendrick's last 8 starts dating back to last season, and 4-1 in his last 5 starts vs the Brewers. I like how both pitchers looked in their first starts of the season and I like the higher total we're getting here Tuesday afternoon. Take the UNDER.
Kyle's Pick(s):
2 UNIT = Houston Astros @ Toronto Blue Jays - BLUE JAYS -1.5 (+111)
Listed Pitchers: Oberholtzer vs. Buehrle
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 2.22 units)
An unfortunate beat yesterday, I won't call it bad because that'll happen in baseball over the course over a season. All we needed is 3 outs to cash the bet, but the Reds scored a couple of pointless runs in the top of the 9th to give us a loss on the UNDER. Hopefully beats and wins like that even out by the end of the season, but the losing end of the stick is never easy to take in the last inning.
I didn't really like the idea of betting another Astros game, but whatever I think will make us money. We may be some of the only people that have watched so many Houston games in this young season. When I saw Mark Buehrle was starting against the 'Stros it caught my attention, though. I think Buehrle will end up emerging as the Blue Jays top pitcher, and one one of the more reliable option in the majors. He looked great in spring training, yielding a 2.93 ERA and then turned it into a fantastic opening start in his first start of the regular season. Buehrle didn't allow any runs against the Tampa Bay Rays while striking out 11 batters. In addition, his WHIP stayed incredibly low at 0.53. The Rays have a capable offense, so that start is nothing to shrug off. The Astros will be flying all the way from Texas to Toronto after dropping 3 out of 4 from the Angels. At 3-4 the Astros have been playing above expectations, but I think it will be sooner rather than later their offense begins to look dreadful. Brett Oberholtzer is a fine pitcher, don't get me wrong, but I can see him struggling against some of the more offensive heavy lineups in MLB. I'll surely be on plenty of UNDER bets with him against struggling offenses, but the Blue Jays may be a tough out tonight. He could have been better in his first start against the Yankees, posting a 4.76 ERA in 5.2 innings pitched. The Jays have been hitting lefties better than right-handers thus far this season and should get enough to beat the Astros by more than a run. I like Buehrle to put forth another dominating performance at home, getting the Blue Jays back on track after losing to the Yankees on Sunday. I don't love this bet, but I like it. There isn't really anything that screamed at me on the card tonight, but I believe I am on the right side with this bet tonight, so I'll play it for 2 units.
Cheers,

BONES BEST BET NHL

The last week of the NHL season can be tricky to bet on. We specifically try to focus on the games that have meaning as opposed to the games such as Senators vs Islanders with no playoff implications. That being said, we’ve got two ML parlays and a total here today. Playing on teams looking to solidify their playoff spot, or gain home ice advantage.

FLYERS ML + RANGERS ML +136 *2*

The teams in this parlay are going to meet in the first round of the playoffs, however both teams are still looking to grab home ice in that series. Almost all must win games for both these teams here on out to do that.

STARS ML + RED WINGS ML +134 *2*

The Stars and Coyotes are fighting hard for that final Western playoff spot. The Stars have taken 2 of the past 3 meetings between these clubs, and we don’t see the Predators playing spoilers to a hungry Dallas Stars team.

The Red Wings have taken 7 straight against Buffalo including all 3 match ups this year. Detroit have won 4 of 5 overall while the Sabres have won just 2 of their last 10. We can’t imagine the Red Wings want to play the Bruins in the first round, so look for them to try to stay ahead of Columbus.

LEAFS @ LIGHTNING O5.5 -115 *1*

The Leafs have played to 5 overs in their last 6 games and 7 in their last 9. The two lone unders had 5 total goals in each game – both an empty netter away from going over. The Leafs are 44-32 on the year to the over, while the Lighting are 39-36. Smaller bet here but definitely worthy of a play.

BONES BEST BET MLB

BLUE JAYS ML + NATIONALS ML +148 *2* (7:05 PM ET)

This is the Astros’ first road game of the season, a little tougher to play on the road and they have gone ice cold with the bats, scoring 1 run in 3 of their past 4 games. Buerhle was dealing in his first start, and we think he can put up similar results tonight against this lackluster Houston team. The Jays live and die by their starting pitching, their offense is not a problem – if they get good pitching, they win games. We think they get good pitching tonight.

Gonzalez was lights out in his first start, and against the Marlins last year whom he allowed just 2 runs over 19 innings (0.95 ERA!). The Marlins offense is hitting at an sustainability high clip, and we expect them to come back to earth tonight against a pitcher they had a lot of trouble with. The Nationals should be able to rough up Alvarez.

MARINERS ML -120 *2* (10:10 PM ET)

Seattle just swept the Angels in LA, and now they get them at their own home opener. Paxton was dealing when he pitched against the Angels in his first start, and we think he is fully capable of doing that again, the kid is going to be a stud. On the flip side we are still not huge fans of Hector Santiago. Look for the M’s to out pitch and out hit the Angels.

ROYALS ML +105 *2* (8:10 PM ET)

Big season debut here for Royals flame thrower Yordana Ventura. This guy can flat out pitch and it’s not just us who are excited to see what he brings this season. The Rays do not have a big lefty heavy lineup and this bodes well for the young right hander, the Rays have also lost two straight games after a hot start and their offense has scored a combined two runs in those games. They counter with Archer who is 0-1 in one career start against the Royals with a 6.35 ERA. We look for 6-7 solid innings from this young KC stud and the superb bullpen to close this game out.

YANKEES ML -125 *2* (1:05 PM ET)

Nova was LIGHT’S OUT in 3 of 4 starts against the Orioles last year, and was even better at home. On the flip side the Yankees roughed up Wei-Yin Chen quite a bit. The Orioles are struggling in a big way with the bats early on, and not getting the pitching to help them out. Look for New York to win this series today.

PHILLIES ML -106 *2* (4:05 PM ET)

Getting even money in the Phillies home opener is great value. Kendrick looked solid in his first start going 7 innings and giving up 5 hits. Kendrick is 6-1 his last 7 starts as a home favorite.

REDS @ CARDINALS O7 -110 *2* (8:15 PM ET)

13 runs were scored last week when these 2 pitchers faced each other. The Reds have 4 players with a career average over .400 against Lynn and 2 guys with .300 averages. 3 players on the Cards have career averages over .500 against Bailey with 2 guys batting over .300. 3 runs from each team and we’re free rolling – we expect min. 3 a piece here.

BONES BEST BET NBA

MAVERICKS @ JAZZ – O199 -105 *4* BEST BET

We have an Eric Lewis sighting. He is 46-16 O/U this year. These teams last met on March 12th and 209 total points were scored. The Mavs have went over today’s total in 9 of their last 10. They have also went over in 6 of 7 following an ATS loss. The Jazz have went over in 4 straight overall. The over is 4-1 the last 5 times these teams have played in Utah.

NETS +7 -105 *3*

The Brooklyn Nets are 3-0 straight up and ATS this year against the Miami Heat. All 3 were very tightly played games with the Nets winning by 1 point twice and 9 points in the other, with the game going to overtime. Brooklyn does not a great road team (-5.4 points on the road) but we’ll back them here with confidence. They match up quite well with Miami, don’t be surprised to see them win here yet again.

THUNDER @ KINGS – U202 -105 *2*

Three meetings between these two teams this season with all 3 going well under the number. 175, 201, and 192 points scored in each of the 3 match ups respectively.

Tuesday card has MLB Dog with bite System and NBA Shocker system leading the card. Free afternoon MLB totals system below.

The MLB Totals Play is on the over in the Milwaukee at Philadelphia game. Rotation numbers 927/928 at 4:05 eastern. This game fits a powerful 25-3 totals system that plays over for home teams like the Phillies that are off a road favored loss by 5 or more runs, if they scored 4 or less runs and are playing an opponent off a win and had 1 or less errors. These game average over 12 runs per game. The Phillies have played over the last 5 times as a home favorite off a road loss by 2 or more runs and are averaging over 6 runs vs right handers thus far. The Brewers are averaging over 5 runs per game on the road. In the series here 5 of the last have played over the total. Kyle Lohse makes the start for the Brewers and he has pitched over in 3 of his last 4 road starts and 4 of 6 here in Philly. K.Kendrick foes for the Phillies and he has flown over in his last 3 home April Starts and 4 of his last 5 home starts vs Milwaukee. Look for this game to go over the total today. On Tuesday its client appreciation Day and we have an NBA Shocker system and a Dog system in bases. Monday card cashed 2 of 3 Including the 6* Championship side on U.Conn. More damage tonight. Tuesday is free Jump on. For the free play take the Brewers and Phillies to go over the total. GC

Tuesday 4/8 Service Plays

Well unfortunate for us our free plays have been better than our paid plays the past 2 days!! We are now 9-2-2 on our last 13 free plays after the Yanks came through yesterday. What can we say about Kentucky but free throws.. when it came down to it that's what was the difference in the game.. UConn made their free throws and Kentucky didn't. Congrats to UConn though for a great season!! Now it's time to focus on the MLB which is one of our favorite sports to handicap. We promise to get on a roll after starting cold early on. Let's try and get that spark back in the NBA where we are 24-11-1 the last 36 plays!!!

NBA

Oklahoma City -8 (Buy down to this line) After losing 2 straight the Thunder will put out some anger on the lowly Kings in Sacramento tonight. Thunder win easily by 10+.

MLB

Baltimore +105 ( We feel this is an early must win game for Baltimore. If they lose today they will fall to 2-6 after going into the season with such high hopes. The pitchers to us in this one are about equal and we look for Baltimore to come out on top in a high scoring game. Final score Baltimore 9-5).

Braves -130 (Insurance play)

Braves RL -1.5 +165 (Colon has a strong resume against the Braves but this is a new team as the last time he pitched against them was in 2002. We like what we saw from Harang in his 1st start and Atlanta at home should take this game. Final score Atlanta 6-3.)

San Francisco -150 (Insurance play)

San Francisco RL -1.5 +150 (Hudson is an impressive 8-1 with an ERA under 2 lifetime vs. Arizona. No matter how old he is getting he seems to always pitch a solid game. Final score San Fran 5-2).

Game: San Antonio Spurs @ Minnesota Timberwolves
Time: Tuesday 04/08 8:05 PM Eastern
Pick: San Antonio -7 (-105) at 5Dimes

The San Antonio Spurs always seem to be counted out, but then they swing back and continue to win. Right now they have emerged as the best team in the NBA, which means the 2014 NBA title will likely go through San Antonio. This team plays hard all the time, and seldom mails in a game. They will square off tonight vs. a Minnesota team that has once again disappointed, as the T-Wolves were expected to be a playoffs team this year, but never seemed to get over the top. Minnesota had an ugly resume over many years, leaving them as the NBA's worst home dog. San Antonio takes care of business on the road again, so play on the Spurs.

Steves Golf Picks

** Odds are not currently up at 5dimes but are traditionally very close to even money **

Enjoy the walk up Magnolia Lane to the years first Major everyone.

dime bet – 920 SEA (-112) vs 919 ANA
Analysis: I think James Paxton is one of the best pitchers in The American League that not a lot of people know about. He cruised over The Angels last week in his season debut and now he gets to show his stuff to the home crowd in Seattle. The Angels were dominated by Seattle in Los Angeles and then got to get healthy against the lowly Astros. It’s back into the frying pan tonight against a Mariners team that is playing very well early – and I expect that to continue as they make a run to win the division.
