Saturday's MLB betting cheat sheet

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for Saturday's MLB betting action:

Texas-sized problems

Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez is widely considered one of the top pitchers in the American League, but the Texas Rangers may disagree. Hernandez is just 12-20 with a 4.10 ERA in 40 starts versus the Rangers, who are a +166 underdog against Hernandez and the host Mariners.

DC tough on Cashner

Andrew Cashner hasn't had problems exerting his dominance this season, but past history suggests he may be in for a rough ride this weekend. Cashner and the San Diego Padres are a +108 dog at Nationals Park, where the 27 year old has a 9.53 ERA in four career appearances.

Cruz control

The Kansas City Royals know they'll need to shut down Baltimore slugger Nelson Cruz if they hope to beat the Orioles. Kansas City (+126) will rely Saturday on veteran right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, who has limited Cruz to four hits in 19 career at-bats against him.

Pitching notes

* Members of the Los Angeles Dodgers roster are hitting .322 in 90 at-bats against Colorado Rockies right-hander Juan Nicasio.

* Philadelphia Phillies lefty Cliff Lee has 31 strikeouts against only one walk in his last three starts.

Hitting notes

* Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez batted just .184 with 23 strikeouts in 76 at-bats against the St. Louis Cardinals last season.

* Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton entered Friday in a 2-for-18 slump with nine strikeouts over his past five games.

Total streaks

San Diego Padres (0-8-2 O/U): The combination of solid pitching, a non-existent offense and a cavernous, unforgiving ballpark has the Padres riding high - or in this case, low - as the league's top Under team.

Injury Watch

* San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley (strained hamstring) is expected to miss the next 2-to-3 weeks.

* Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (hamstring) is expected to be out until at least Sunday.

* Texas Rangers third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff (stiff back) is considered day-to-day.

MLB WAG of the Day

Weather watch

* Fans attending the San Diego-Washington game at Nationals Park should expect a 30 percent chance of showers.

* Rain is also a possibility at Citi Field, where a 40 percent chance of showers is forecast with temperatures in the low-to-mid-60s.

Hot and cold betting trends

* Angels at Yankees: Over is 4-1 in New York's last five games against a left-handed starter.

* Rockies at Dodgers: Under is 5-1 in Nicasio's previous six starts against Los Angeles.

* Red Sox at Blue Jays: Over is 11-0 in Toronto right-hander Brandon Morrow's last 11 starts.

Stat of the Day

Boston right-hander Clay Buchholz is 7-2 with a 1.49 ERA in 10 starts at the Rogers Centre. The Red Sox have won his last eight starts there.

Kevin's Pick(s):
5 STAR = Philadelphia Phillies @ Arizona Diamondbacks - PHILLIES TO WIN (-131)
Listed Pitchers: Lee vs Arroyo
(Note: I'm risking 5.00 units to win 3.82 units)
Arizona took the first of this series last night by a score of 5-4, but that makes them just 8-18 on the season and 2-11 at home (which might include one Australia game). The Phillies fall a game below .500 at 11-12 and are a solid 7-7 on the road. Tonight they send their ace, Cliff Lee, to the mound. Lee is 3-2 with a 3.09 ERA, .306 OBA and 1.31 WHIP. Besides a rough start to the season in Texas, Lee has pitched great. In his last 4 starts he's allowed just 4 earned runs combined and on the season he has 38 strikeouts and just 2 walks. His latest start was 8 innings of shutout baseball where he struckout 10 and walked none vs the Dodgers. Over his career vs the Dbacks he is 4-1 with a 2.93 ERA, .205 OBA and 0.93 WHIP. His last start vs Arizona was 7 shutout innings. He will be facing Bronson Arroyo, who has struggles this season. Arroyo is 1-2 with a 9.50 ERA, .372 OBA and 2.00 WHIP. In his last two starts combined he has pitched 8.2 innings and giving up 18 hits, 14 earned runs, with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks. When Arroyo has his stuff he can be great, but when he doesn't he usually struggles quite a bit like we've seen this season. Arroyo has struggled vs Philadelphia in his career going 4-7 with a 5.35 ERA, .274 OBA and 1.34 WHIP. A few of the Phillies have had some success vs Arroyo over the last 5 years, including Dominic Brown who is hitting .545 off Arroyo in 11 at-bats. Note that the Phillies are 5-1 in Lee's last 6 starts with a total set between 7-8.5, 5-2 in his last 7 vs a team with a losing record, and 5-2 in his last 7 starts with 4 days off. The Dbacks are 0-6 in their last 6 Saturday games, 0-8 in their last 8 games as a a home underdog, and 1-8 in their last 9 games vs a left-handed starter. Also note that the Phillies are 4-1 in Lee's last 5 starts vs the Dbacks. This is a big pitching mis-match with current form, and I expect that current form to continue tonight in Arizona where the Dbacks have struggled. I like the price on Lee and the Phillies and I'm on it for 5 units.
Kyle's Pick(s)
2 UNIT = Boston Red Sox @ Toronto Blue Jays - OVER 9 RUNS (-110)
Listed Pitchers: Buchholz vs. Morrow
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.82 units)
The Dodgers' offense really didn't get moving until they were down, in extra innings. The Rockies scored 3 and the Dodgers came back in the bottom and scored 2. There is no reason the Dodgers should be going to the 9th with only 2 runs against Jordan Lyles.
I said before the season started that the OVER in Blue Jays games would be a good trend to look at. Thus far you would be ahead if you took the OVER in all of their games this season, a 13-9 advantage. Of late is what I have expected from this team: scoring lots of runs and giving up a ton as well. Their last four games have hit the OVER. The last two games weren't even close, as the Blue Jays lost 10-8 and 11-4. Prior to that they won 9-3 in a rather comfortable cover. Finding a reliable number 2 in the rotation has been an issue for the Jays. Mark Buehrle has been great, but other than him the rotation has left a lot to be desired. Brandon Morrow enters today with a 5.03 ERA in four starts. His WHIP has also been lacking too at 1.37. Note that all of his games have gone OVER the number this season. Actually, dating back to last season, Morrow has been involved in 11 straight that have eclipsed the number. Clay Buchholz like Morrow, is trying to get into a rhythm. His ERA is all the way up to 7.71 after a productive 2013 campaign. In his last start against the Orioles, Buchholz lasted only 2.1 innings, getting blasted for 6 runs in that time. The most innings he has lasted this season has been only 6. His OBP is a whopping .402 with a 1.93 WHIP. Not sure what is bothering him, maybe trying to fight through an injury, but it is safe to say he is not himself. I expect some hard hit balls in this matchup, so the OVER 9 looks like a good bet for early Saturday afternoon.

Phil Hughes is pitching for the Twins, which means we are probably going to see some balls leave Target Field. Saturday card has the 100% 6* 1st Round NBA Playoff Game of the Year, a 5* MLB Blowout system that wins by over runs, an NHL 5* System from the Historical Database and a 5* Evening NBA System winner. MLB Top plays sweep 3-0 on Friday. Free 16-0 MLB System play below.

On Saturday the free 3* MLB System Play is on the Washington Nationals. Game 902 at 1:05 eastern. The Nationals apply to the system as seen below which has won 16 straight times since 2005 and is included today to illustrate the exclusivity and Power of the Data we use on a daily basis. The system plays on home teams that are favored with a total that is 8 or less if they won at home last night by 5 or more runs, had 10 or more hits and scored 10 or more runs, provided their opponent scored 2 or less runs on 5+ hits and both teams made no more than 1 error in the game. These teams win by an average 3 runs per game. The Padres have lost 4 of the last 5 here and are hitting under .200 in day games. The Nationals have won 3 of the last 4 at home off a home win by 5 or more runs if they scored 10+ runs. They have Roark making the start and he was solid in his only home start going 6+ scoreless innings. He will oppose San Diego righty A. Cashner who has an Era over 4.50 on the road. Cashner has a 9.34 era vs Washington and was blasted in his lone start here going 2 inning sand allowing 6 earned runs. Based on the systems, angles and Pitching Indicators we will back the Nationals today. Saturday card has the 6* NBA 1st Round 100% System Play of the Year, a 5* MLB Blowout system, an NHL Historical Power system 5* Side and an Evening NBA Super system winner. Friday MLB Top plays sweep going 3-0. PM to Jump on and cash out for Saturday. For the free play take Washington. GC

NBA – 745 Indiana Pacers @ 746 Atlanta Hawks

The Pacers are really struggling in this series and today’s contest is clearly a “must win” game for them. Right now, it is more likely for the Pacers to beat the Hawks via their offense rather than their defense as absurd it might sound.

Roy Hibbert is lost on the court! The Hawks’ offense w/ their big men shooting the ball from the outside is taking advantage of Hibbert’s lack of mobility. IND’s coach Vogel has decided to change IND’s PNR coverage as he lost the confidence in his team… Obviously, the Pacers are not “prepared” to change their defensive system built in years in a few days, and suddenly, the best defensive team in the league simply doesn’t know what to do on the defensive end! In the last game, ATL generated plenty of good outside looks. For some reason, they couldn’t hit those shots @ first half by shooting just 2-16 3pts. However, once those shots started falling, the Hawks killed IND’s defense w/ 59 points in the second half!

On the other end… coach Vogel most likely will give more minutes to Luis Scola and C.J. Watson as both players have been quite decent on the offensive end = good sign for the OVER. I expect IND to be super aggressive by attacking the rim and get a decent number of FT’s vs. undersized ATL’s frontcourt! With Hibbert playing fewer minutes, the Pacers are playing a bit faster and so, my fair line for this is 190 points = proper edge for a play w/ OVER!

Pick: 3 units (Single Dime Play) on 745/746 Over 187 @ -110

NBA – 747 San Antonio Spurs @ 748 Dallas Mavericks

DAL’s head coach Rich Carlisle was fantastic in the first two games of the series, but especially in the last game, the Spurs really couldn’t play any worse.

First of all, we should understand that at the end of the third quarter, the Mavericks had scored 88 points while shooting 50.7% FG & 6-14 from 3pts (42.9% mark). However, the Spurs were even better offensively by shooting 56.5% FG & 8-14 from 3pts (57.1% mark), but still, they were trailing by 13 points!

Turnovers!!! SAS committed 21 TO’s in the first 3 quarters of the game and they were outrebounded as well – obviously, I have to give some props to DAL but really, the majority of those TO’s were the result of some incredible sloppy play from the Spurs! Turnovers & Rebounding is something really “easy” to fix, so I expect SAS to bounce back today in these two key areas.

In that game, everything went well for the Mavericks. They couldn’t miss mid range jumpers…Shawn Marion was hitting three pointers… B. Wright battled foul trouble, and so Carlisle was “forced” to play D. Blair and Blair was just tremendous w/ 3-6 FG for 8 points + 7 rebounds and 4 steals in just 14 minutes of action!

DAL played small ball and won the game… I expect SAS to be more “ready” for this contest while their biggest problem in G2 is pretty easy to fix and so, I’m taking the Spurs in here as my Single Dime Play!

Pick: 3 units (Single Dime Play) on 747 San Antonio Spurs (-3.5) @ -110
