Game of the Day: Rockets at Trail Blazers

Houston Rockets at Portland Trail Blazers (-3.5, 213.5)

Portland leads series 3-2.

The Houston Rockets staved off elimination and attempt to even the Western Conference first-round series at 3-3 when they visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. The Rockets thrived with their season on the line in Game 5 and avoided the late-game breakdowns that hurt them earlier in the series while posting a 108-98 victory on Wednesday. Now the Trail Blazers feel the urgency to wrap up the series at home to keep from having to travel back to Houston for a Game 7.

The Rockets held Portland star LaMarcus Aldridge to eight points while being highly intent on keeping their season going. “I don’t want to go on vacation,” Houston center Dwight Howard told reporters after Game 5. “I want to win. I want to give everything I’ve got. Every night, put my heart into it and sacrifice my body and do whatever I can to help this team win.” The Trail Blazers are trying to halt a streak of six straight first-round exits that dates back to 2000. “We’ve been good at home all year and now we’ll go back home and take care of business,” Aldridge told reporters.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSN Houston, KGW (Portland)

LINE HISTORY: The line opened at Portland -3.5 with a total of 213, but the total quickly moved half a point to 213.5.

INJURY REPORT: N/A

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "The Blazers are 3.5-point favorites in Game 6 - a close-out game for them, and in my opinion a must-win game as I do not see them winning Game 7 in Houston. So far we are seeing over 60 percent of the action come in on the Rockets to cover the spread and 51 percent of the action on them to win outright." - Michael Stewart, CarbonSports.ag.

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "Houston finally slowed down LaMarcus Aldridge in Game 5 as he scored just 8 points on 3 of 12 shooting from the field. But in a critical Game 6 at home, Aldridge will likely bounce back with a strong performance, and if he does, the Rockets will have their work cut out for them in Game 6 in Portland." - Covers' Experts Steve Merril

WHY BET THE ROCKETS: Starting point guard Patrick Beverley was limited in Game 5 due to an illness and Jeremy Lin stepped up to have his best performance of the series. Lin had 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting as he rebounded from a poor Game 4 performance that included a costly turnover late in regulation. “I just tried to be aggressive,” Lin told reporters. “I felt like I needed to be more of a spark for the team. I hadn’t done a great job of that in this series so I just tried to come out as aggressive as I can be.” Howard has been Houston’s best player of the series, posting five straight double-doubles while averaging 26 points, 14.2 rebounds and three blocks.

WHY BET THE TRAIL BLAZERS: Aldridge averaged 35.3 points over the first four games – including outings of 46 and 43 points to begin the series – before being a complete nonfactor in Game 5. Houston’s lineup switch to Omer Asik from Terrence Jones has allowed Howard to guard Aldridge more often and the results were even better than what Houston expected. Aldridge, who was 3-of-12 shooting, bristled over the notion that Howard silenced him. “The ball didn’t come to me as much,” Aldridge told reporters. “Our guys were making shots and we were playing off them and that’s how the game went. It wasn’t about how Dwight guarded me or anything like that.”

TRENDS:

* Over is 6-0 in the last six meetings in Portland.
* Rockets are 7-1-1 ATS in the last nine meetings in Portland.
* Over is 13-3 in the last 16 meetings.
* Rockets are 11-5-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings.

COVERS CONSENSUS: 54 percent of bets are on Portland -3.5 while 67 percent are on Over 213.5

Three big betting trends for the second round of the NHL playoffs

With the pool of 16 postseason teams now whittled down to eight, bettors will be looking for any trend they can take advantage of heading into the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Taking a look at some of the recent second-round results, here are some patterns that have emerged as we prepare to kick off the round of eight:

Under Takes Over

Most fans will acknowledge that goal scoring generally begins to dry up as the Stanley Cup tournament reaches the second round, and totals are often adjusted to reflect the increased reliance on defense and aversion to risk-taking. Yet, aside from a bizarre stretch during the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs, Under bettors have reaped the benefits in the round of eight. The 2011 second round finished 11-9-1 O/U, thanks in large part to a 9-0-1 outlier from May 3-8. But 2012 saw that number drop to 7-11-3 O/U. The Under trend was even more pronounced last season, as teams went 7-13-4 O/U in Round 2.

Home Ownership

Betting on home favorites in the Stanley Cup playoffs is often a risky proposition. They usually don't pay out well and with the league trending toward greater parity, it's a major gamble. Despite the perceived increase in balance between teams, second-round home faves have steadily become more dominant over the years. Home favorites have improved from a modest 9-8 record in 2011 to an 11-7 mark in 2012 and an eye-popping 17-2 last season. It will be interesting to see if this particular trend continues into 2014, or if last year was an exception.

Penalty Killing the Key

While the number of power plays per game doesn't drop significantly from Rounds 1 to 2, what teams do with their opportunities plays a major role in whether they advance to the conference finals. Over the past three postseasons, no team has reached the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with less than an 84.2-percent penalty-killing success rate in Round 2. Furthermore, the combined penalty-kill percentage of all 12 second-round teams to reach the conference finals in the past three years - 88.3 percent - would have ranked first in the NHL during the 2013-14 regular season.

Friday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Over value in pitching duel

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for Friday's MLB betting action:

Rocky Mountain High

A late New York Mets rally allowed the Colorado Rockies to remain one of the strongest Over plays in the National League. New York scored four times in the final two innings of a 7-4 loss in Colorado, improving the Rockies to 19-9-2 O/U.

Dueling Aces

The low total of the day (6.5) belongs to the matchup between Washington's Stephen Strasburg and Philadelphia's Cliff Lee. But Under bettors beware: Strasburg is 5-1 O/U in his first six starts on the season, while Lee is 3-2-1 O/U.

Road Rules

Road favorites have come through in a big way so far in 2014, going 71-53 against the moneyline. There are three road faves on Friday's schedule: St. Louis (-165) visiting the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers (-128) in Miami, and Seattle (-184) playing in Houston.

Pitching Notes

* San Francisco hurler Tim Lincecum has provided plenty of value away from AT&T Park of late, leading the Giants to a 5-1 mark in his last six appearances as a road underdog. Lincecum and the Giants are +135 for Friday's game in Atlanta.

* Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole was the hottest Over play in the majors for a stretch, but that trend may be shifting. Cole, who has gone Under in back-to-back starts following seven straight Over, will face Brandon Morrow and the Toronto Blue Jays (+132, 7.5) in Friday's series opener.

Hitting Notes

* Braves outfielder B.J. Upton homered in Thursday's 5-4 loss to Miami, marking the first time the Braves have lost a game in which Upton goes deep. Yet, while Atlanta dropped to 9-1 overall in games featuring an Upton homer, its streak of Overs in such situations remained intact at 10-0 O/U.

* Mets third baseman David Wright is just 4-for-35 over his last nine games, during which New York has gone 2-5-2 O/U.

Total Streaks

Miami Marlins (4-1-1 O/U): The Marlins closed out an impressive sweep of the visiting Braves Thursday, racking up 23 runs in three games against one of the most impressive pitching rotations in baseball.

Prop of the Day

The Chicago White Sox are installed as a +100 underdog to be the last team to score a run in Friday's game against the host Cleveland Indians. The White Sox lead the majors with 67 runs scored from the seventh inning on.

Injury Watch

* Cincinnati Reds speedster Billy Hamilton is expected to miss a couple of days with sprained knuckles. Hamilton is among the league leaders with 11 stolen bases. The Reds are 7-2 and 3-6 O/U in games in which he swipes at least one bag.

Weather Watch

* It could be a high-scoring day at Wrigley Field between the Cubs and the Cardinals. The wind is expected to blow out to center field at 11 mph. Teams averaged better than 13 runs per game last season when the wind was blowing in that direction.

* The Boston Red Sox and visiting Oakland Athletics may also see a bump in scoring. With the wind expected to blow out to right field at 9 mph, teams combined to average 10.38 runs in 20 games in 2013 when the wind blew out in that direction.

Umpire Stat of the Day

The home team is 6-0 in umpire Jerry Layne's last six games behind home plate. Layne will work the balls and strikes for Cincinnati's series opener against visiting Milwaukee.

** Odds, stats, weather forecast and probable pitchers as of 9:20 a.m. ET Friday.

2* 922 KAN / 921 DET – OVER 7.5
Analysis: IMO this total is simply a reflection of the starting pitchers, and I get that. However, a quick check of how well each offense has fared against said starters and the weather tells me there’s more ways this gets to 8 than not. Kansas City gave up runs last night, used bullpen, and their pen hadn’t been great lately anyways. The Tigers has yesterday off, so they’re bats are rested. In fact, the Tigers have only played four games in the last week, so they’re REALLY rested, and in those four games they hit .294 and scored 29 runs. Over the last week the Royals almost six runs a game, and Porcello has never been the same on the road as he is at home. The Tigers’ bullpen the last week has and ERA of about 6.85, so it’s ALL on Porcello IMO to keep this game low scoring. Shields faced the Tigers in the first game of the year, and they’ve been the only team to get more flyball outs against him than not all season, and are the only team to score more than two earned runs against him this season. Given the situation, I do lean to the Royals a bit, but like the over even better. I doubt this goes to 7, but I suppose it could, so either keep an eye on it or maybe even buy it TO 7?

#534 Dallas Mavericks +3 (8:05 edt) ESPN

The Mavs have found a way to cover every game in this series so far and they are well positioned to do that here in game 6. They match up very well against the Spurs and they will have the raucous home crowd behind them. Not to mention they will have the extra motivation of having their backs to the wall since if they lose they are out of the playoffs. Simply can’t buck the trend of Dallas covering in this series

Game: San Antonio Spurs @ Dallas Mavericks
Time: Friday 05/02 8:00 PM Eastern
Pick: First Half UNDER 98 (-110) at Sportsbook.com

It seems that the Spurs have been focused when things get away from them. The defense has been a hallmark for this team for the entire Tim Duncan era, so I look for that to come out again tonight. San Antonio opened the series holding Dallas to 85 points. After going down 2-1 in the series, they brought the defense again to hold the Mavs to just 89 points. They now find themselves in a similar place, and that has been a call to defense for this team. The first half in the two games mentioned have seen 87, and 86 points scored by both teams, and San Antonio will be in defensive mode as they always seem to be with a must-win situation. This game should follow the San Antonio need when against the wall, and the Spurs will come out tough on defensive end to start the game. Play the first half UNDER.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Minnesota Twins (MLB) - 8:10 PM EDT
Pick: Total: 8.5/-115 Over

*3 Star MLB Total DOMINATION* Ubaldo Jimenez has had some real trouble early in the year for his new team in Baltimore. Jimenez is a streaky pitcher, and until he turns it around I won't trust him at all. Ricky Nolasco is considered an ace for the Twins, which tells you how bad this pitching staff is. Nolasco has an ugly 6.67 ERA this year. Jimenez has an ERA of 6.59. Two pitchers that can't be trusted against two good lineups. The Twins offense is much better than expected, and the Orioles now have Machado back which helps a lot. The over is 5-0 in the Orioles last 5 road games. The over is 8-0 in their last 8 road games vs. right-handed pitching. The over is 6-0 in their last 6 with the total set at 7 to 8.5 runs. The over is 5-0 in the Orioles last 5 as a road underdog. The over is 4-0-1 in the Twins last 5 home games set at 7 to 8.5 runs. The over is 4-0 in their last 4 vs. the AL East. The over is 9-1 in their last 10 during game one of a series. A 41-1 angle. Take the over.

Washington Nationals vs. Philadelphia Phillies (MLB) - 7:05 PM EDT
Pick: Total: 7.0/115 Over Play Title: RV: 5* 91% MLB TOTALS SYSTEM OF THE

On Friday the MLB Totals Play is on the over in the Washington at Philadelphia game. Rotation numbers 903/904 at 7:05 eastern. This game fits a Powerful totals system that cashes over 90% and averages over 11 runs per game. We want to play the over for home favorites off a home favored loss by 5 or more runs and scored 2 or less runs, vs an opponent off a road favored win and scored 5 or more runs. The Nationals have gone over 10 Straight times on the road off a road win by 5 or more runs and 7 of 8 on the road when the total is 7 or less. They are hitting over .300 the past week and are scoring 6 runs per game vs leftys, going over in 5 of 7. The Phillies are 7 of 10 over vs winning teams and 13 of 18 vs right handers. Lee goes for the Phillies and whilhe has been decent allowing 7 earned runs in 13 innings his last 2 vs Washington. The Phillies have a mediocre 5.73 home bullpen era. Strasburg for the Nationals has a 9.00 road era . Look for this one to go over the modest total here tonight. See the system below. Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres (MLB) - 10:10 PM EDT
Pick: Total: 7.0/-115 Under Play Title: 8* Friday MLB ARI/SD

San Diego & Arizona under 7 The San Diego Padres play host to the Arizona Diamondbacks in an N.L. West affair on Friday night. It's no secret that the Padres can't score runs. San Diego has managed just 77 runs in their 29 games this season; 11 runs lower than the next worst team in the league. The Padres go up against Bronson Arroyo in tonight's affair, and while Arroyo is far from a good pitcher in the MLB, he's displayed dominance against the Padres in recent years. In Arroyo's last five starts against the Padres, he has 2.18 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. In his career at Petco, he boasts an even better 2.13 ERA. On the other side of things, Andrew Cashner is simply lights out at home. In 14 home starts over the last two seasons, Cashner has an impressive 1.67 ERA and 0.94 WHIP. In his three home starts this year, Cashner's numbers are even better as he boasts a sparkling 0.81 ERA and 0.85 WHIP. The Diamonbacks struggle to produce runs away from home and have been downright awful against right-handed pitching all season. The oddsmakers have missed the mark with this total and we're set to take advantage. The Under is 10-2-1 at Petco this season, and a remarkable 23-4-1 in the last 28 games there. The Under is also 6-0 in Cashner's starts this season and 12-1 in his last 13 starts dating back to last season. Take the UNDER. Good Luck, Razor Ray 8* Play on San Diego & Arizona under 7

San Antonio vs. Dallas – May 2, 2014 – 8:00 PM

10* Pick: @ -3 -110 San Antonio

We are going against the trends here and banking on the Spurs putting together a dominating performance for the first time in this series. Coming into the playoffs, San Antonio had won eight straight meetings against the Mavericks and the majority of those were not close but now San Antonio is barely getting by. Down 2-1, the Spurs have fought back with two straight wins but they were close enough where Dallas was able to cover both and it has now covered all five games in this series. Going back, the Mavericks are 6-0 ATS in their last six games while the Spurs are 0-7 ATS in their last seven games. Those records I feel are playing into this number as the last time these two teams met in Dallas, San Antonio was favored by 4.5 points and now it has dropped a point and a half since then. This is the spot where a top seed comes to play and while Dallas seems to have nothing left in tank, the Spurs look like they are just now getting comfortable and ready to send a knockout blow. They have found the way to beat Dallas with their solid pick-and-roll offense and it was in fine form in Game Five as the Spurs outscored Dallas 54-28 in the paint and on the night, San Antonio had five different players score over 15 points. Despite the cover struggles in this series, the Spurs have covered seven of the last 10 meetings in Dallas and going back, the Mavericks are just 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games. 10* (533) San Antonio Spurs

3* Pick: @ -3.5 -108 Portland

Play On: Portland Trailblazers (Game 536).

Note: The Trailblazers host the Rockets in Game Six of this Western Conference series with their back to the wall in this elimination game at the Rose Garden. Portland takes the floor knowing that .600 or greater home favorites in Game Six of the playoffs off a double-digit loss are 20-1 SU and 18-3 ATS since 1991, including 15-0 SUATS if they allowed less than 114 points in the loss. With the Rockets just 2-9 SUATS in the playoffs off a DD win, we recommend a 3-unit play on Portland. Thank you and good luck as always.

Prediction

Pittsburgh Penguins
Reason

I’m playing on PITTSBURGH. I believe this line could easily be higher. The Penguins are well-rested and playing at home. They outscore teams by a 3.3 to 2.4 average margin here. On the other hand, the Rangers only outscore teams by a 2.7 to 2.5 margin on the road and they’ll be playing their third game in four days here. Special teams figures to favor the Pens. The Pittsburgh power-play was the best during the regular season and was a solid 4 for 15 against Columbus. (The Pens also scored a pair of short-handed goals in that series.) On the other ha While the Rangers did win their most recent visit here, the Pens are still 5-1 the last six meetings here. I like their chances of improving on those stats tonight. 8*

Game of a Lifetime
Dallas Mavs vs San Antonio Spurs
15-units Spurs -4 @ 5dimes (http://www.5dimes.com/)

It’s time for the Mavericks to pull out their fishing poles. The Spurs have shown they are the better team in the last 3 games even in a game 3 lost. In game 5 San Antonio played Spurs basketball, 4 of their starters scored double digits and they only turn the ball over 5 times. Tony Parker was the biggest bright spot of game 5. He scored 23 mostly out of pick and roll situations. Coach Pop prefer to use the pick and roll with Tim Duncan because he is able to shoot the short jumper or dive to the basket after the roll. Tiago Splitter has been a hidden gem for the Spurs. Duncan is drawing so much attention from the Mavs defense that they have not noticed Splitter recorded his 3rd straight double double on Wednesday. The Spurs shoot the 3 pointer well during the regular season but they are struggling to heat up from deep. Instead of settling for the long bombs they have pound the ball inside of the paint. In game 5 the Spurs produced 49 points in the paint and shot 27 free throws. San Antonio attempted 45 shots in the paint compared to Dallas 32. Defensively the Spurs are focused on containing Dirk. He has not made a 3 pointer in the last 3 games and they for forcing them out of his comfort zones on the court. Dirk will still find away to score 20 point but he has not had an offensive explosion against the Spurs. San Antonio will continue to win the battle in the paint and this series will end in 6.

NBA Game of the Day
Houston vs Portland
5-Units Portland -4 @ 5dimes (http://www.5dimes.com/)

Portland has proved it has the advantage over Houston. Aldridge is a true match up problem. In games in where they were able to control him, Houston won. But in games where Portland won, Aldridge averaged 39 points game. Now Houston has to go on the road in a must win situation. Houston will be sent home tonight. Harden has not figured it out and frankly has been out played by Blazers young guards Lillard and Matthews. Harden has 17 turnovers in 5 games. He's turned it over twice as much as he's stolen the ball. With Harden not shooting efficiently, Rockets are in trouble. Trail Blazers have some of the best young talent in the league. Lillard, Batum, Mathews, Aldridge will close out this series against Houston tonight.
