Game of the day: Kings at Rangers

Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers (-135, 5)

Kings lead series 3-0.

Although they are on the cusp of their second Stanley Cup title in three years, the Los Angeles Kings know all too well that a 3-0 series lead isn't insurmountable. After all, Los Angeles became the fourth team in NHL history to overcome that very deficit to stun San Jose in the first round. The Kings look to end any thought of the New York Rangers becoming the fifth - and first in the Stanley Cup final since the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs - when the teams play Game 4 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

"I'm just extremely disappointed that we're in this hole," Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist said. "We have to regroup; it's not over." History might suggest otherwise as nine teams have lost the first three games of the Stanley Cup final since 1982 - and only New Jersey extended the series past the fourth, pushing it to six before succumbing to Los Angeles in 2012. "Nothing is done, nothing is finished," said Jonathan Quick, who recorded his ninth career postseason shutout by stopping all 32 shots he faced in the Kings' 3-0 victory on Monday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS

LINE HISTORY: The Rangers opened as -127 home faves but has moved up to -137 with a total of 5.

INJURY REPORT: Rangers - LW Daniel Carcillo (Eligible June 11, suspension).

WHAT THE SHARPS SAY: "If the Kings have taught us anything in these playoffs, it's that you should never say never. With that being said, the Rangers face a nearly impossible task down 3-0 in this series. They are favored for a reason here in Game 4, as we can expect them to bring their 'A' game in an effort to avoid the embarrassment of a clean sweep. On the flip side, the Kings know they squandered a pair of chances to close out the Devils in the Stanley Cup Final two years ago, and will be ready for the challenge that lies ahead. I do see value with the Kings at an underdog price, as I'm counting on another top notch performance from Jon Quick off of his shutout in Game 3." Covers Expert Sean Murphy

WHAT THE BOOKS SAY: "After two heartbreaking losses in LA, the Rangers returned home only to face Jonathan Quick at his best, shutting out the Rangers 3-0. This was the first time in the series that the Kings have held the lead. Are the Rangers primed for a sweep by the Kings? Or can they salvage a win at MSG? We had the Kings listed at 10-1 for the sweep when the series began. So far, the action is saying the Kings are going to hoist the cup Wednesday night as 78 percent and 84 percent of the action is on the King's moneyline and puckline, respectively." Michael Stewart, CarbonSports.ag

ABOUT THE KINGS: Justin Williams continued his torrid postseason stretch by setting up Jeff Carter's goal with under one second remaining in the first period in Game 3. Williams has scored two goals and set up seven others during his five-game point streak and has 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) in as many playoff contests. Carter has also averaged a point per game, albeit by scoring 10 goals and setting up 14 others.

ABOUT THE RANGERS: New York's punchless power play failed on all six opportunities on Monday and is a dismal 1-for-14 in the first three games of the final. Rick Nash saw some rare time with the man advantage, but was held off the scoresheet for the third consecutive contest and sixth in seven games. "I can't be satisfied when we're losing," Nash told ESPNNewYork.com. "Right now, chances aren't good enough. They've got to be going in, we've got to be helping the team win."

TRENDS:
* Over is 7-1-1 In Kings last nine games.
* Home team is 7-2 in the last nine meetings.
* Kings are 9-0 in their last nine vs. Metropolitan.
* Kings are 8-3 in their last 11 road games.

COVERS CONSENSUS: 61.68 percent of Covers Consensus bets are on the Rangers.

Rangers try to avoid Stanley Cup sweep
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

The New York Rangers' backs are firmly pinned against the wall. One more loss and they're history in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Rangers go into Game 4 on Wednesday night in Madison Square Garden trailing the Los Angeles Kings 3-0 in the best-of-seven series. New York lost 3-0 to the Kings on Monday night, putting them in a real bind. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942 have rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win the Cup.

But Rangers coach Alan Vigneault is trying his best not to make too big a deal about the deficit. Instead, the Rangers can point to their comeback from a 3-1 deficit in their second-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins last month.

"We're facing the same exact situation we were against Pittsburgh: We lose, we're done," Vigneault said. "If we don't want to be done, we've got to win."

Easier said than done against an impressive Kings team that got past the Chicago Blackhawks in six games in the Western Conference Finals and the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks in seven-game playoff series to move to the brink of its second Stanley Cup in three years.

"It wasn't easy for us to come back from 3-0 in the first series against San Jose. We know how it can happen," Kings defenseman Drew Doughty said. "All it takes is one game, one momentum shift, the team can run with it, the other team can be down in the dumps.

"That's why this next game is so important for us. We can't let them back into the series. We have to take it to them. They're going to have their best effort without a doubt and we need to have ours as well."

All the Rangers can do at this point is take a one-game-at-at-time approach, Vignealt said, and not get overwhelmed by the huge hole his team is in.

"I know my players and I know the values that they have, their competitive nature," he said. "Again, everybody's going to come out and say all the right things. All that, like I mentioned, is just talk.

"What needs to happen is the actions on the ice. I like the way we've played. I mean, we've played some good hockey, but we haven't found a way to win. That's what we’ve got to do tomorrow."

Vigneault wasn't upset with the way the Rangers played in Game 3 or, for that matter, in the series. He pointed to the play of Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick as the difference on Monday night. Quick made 32 saves and posted his ninth career playoff shutout.

"I mean, their goaltender made some key saves at the right time. Just like we've seen Hank (Rangers goaltender Hendrik Lundqvist) do so many times to the opposition on the road, their goaltender did it to us yesterday," Vigneault said. "Are there things we could do better around their net? I thought as far as net presence and getting to second opportunities, we did a good job. (Quick) was just able to stop them. I think if it would have gone on for three, four more periods, he was in that zone last night.

"We're going to show our guys a couple things here. Coaches met this morning. Maybe we can do them a little bit better. And hopefully he won't be as good as he was last night."

Lundqvist is trying not to be too hard on himself and remain confident going into the make-or-break Game 4.

"I think you feel a lot of different emotions right now, and anger is probably one of them," he said. "I think it's important that you don't feel sorry for yourself. But, you know, you're disappointed and upset you're in this position. At the same time, you have to accept it and move on and get ready for the next game. But today, yeah, it's not a happy room, obviously.

"We worked really hard and long to get here. Again, we're playing a really good team. They take advantage of mistakes. They play extremely well defensively, I think. We still believe that we can do it. We have to start by just focusing on the first period tomorrow."

Meanwhile, the Kings will be aiming for a sweep.

"You just want to get out there. You don't want to get overanxious at the same time. But it's fun to play in these types of games," Doughty said. "When the pressure's at a high, you just want to go out there, play your best as a team, win games."

Moneyline on the move in Kings-Rangers Game 4
Andrew Avery

Sportsbooks opened the New York Rangers as home faves in their do-or-die Game 4 versus the Los Angeles Kings early Tuesday, but the line has been on the move since post.

Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com/) Sports opened the Rangers as -127 home faves, but that currently sits at -137 as we head into game day.

It would take a miracle for the Blueshirts to bounce back and get back into the series, but it can start with a win Wednesday.

Rangers huge dogs, but LA knows the feeling
Stephen Campbell

After Monday's 3-0 shutout, the Los Angeles Kings have a 3-0 stranglehold over the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Final and are just one win away from sipping from Lord Stanley's Mug for the second time in three years.

bet365 (http://www.bet365.com/).com updated its NHL futures Tuesday, with the Kings sitting at -3500 to do just that. If you're the kind of person who believes in miracles, then the Rangers' +1500 line is for you.

History does not favor the Blueshirts heading into Game 4 at Madison Square Garden. Just one team in NHL history has overcome a 3-0 deficit to win the Stanley Cup Final - the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs. The Kings know better than to count out the Rangers, however, as they found themselves in a 3-0 hole in their first round series versus the San Jose Sharks before mounting a spirited comeback and winning the next four-in-a-row.

Tigers, White Sox adjust rotations after rainout
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

CHICAGO -- Fans of pitching duels should be happy about the constant rain that fell at U.S. Cellular Field on Tuesday night.

The rainy forecast prompted a game between the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox to be postponed and resulted in back-to-back appealing mound matchups Wednesday and Thursday to conclude what was supposed to be a four-game series.

"Every time we think we're going to get one in, we might not," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said Tuesday afternoon, looking up at the dark sky over the stadium. "And when you don't think you're going to get one in, you do."

This time, it looked as if they might not play, and that is exactly what happened.

The game was postponed about 30 minutes before fans are usually let into the ballpark, with no makeup date announced.

Each team will now skip a starter in the rotation, which means the White Sox (32-33) will throw left-hander John Danks on Wednesday and left-handed ace Chris Sale on Thursday, while the Tigers (33-27) will pitch right-hander Justin Verlander on Wednesday and right-hander Max Scherzer on Thursday.

Verlander and Danks were supposed to pitch Tuesday, while Scherzer and Sale were set for the series finale all along. Getting skipped in the series are White Sox right-hander Andre Rienzo and Tigers left-hander Drew Smyly.

The makeup game could be tacked onto a scheduled three-game series Aug. 29-31 between the American League Central rivals, but it would have to be played as part of a doubleheader. That series is Detroit's only other scheduled trip to Chicago this season, and the Tigers have a game against the Indians in Cleveland on Sept. 1, preventing an extra single game from being added.

Chicago won the opener of the series 6-5 on Monday, pulling within 3 1/2 games of the division-leading Tigers.

NOTES: Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera (hamstring tightness) was scheduled to be the designated hitter for a second straight game. Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said Cabrera might have been able to play the field, but the wet conditions and his own conservative approach made the decision for him. ... White Sox RHP Nate Jones continues to make progress in his recovery from surgery May 5 to correct a nerve issue in his back. He is playing catch from about 70 feet away, but he doesn't want to put an exact timetable on his potential return to the bullpen. ... Chicago RF Avisail Garcia (torn labrum in left shoulder) was also at the ballpark Tuesday and met with reporters. He continues to rehab his surgically repaired shoulder in Chicago, and he estimated that he might be ready for baseball-related training in eight weeks. His return this season, however, is doubtful. ... White Sox RHP Matt Lindstrom, who had surgery May 23 to repair a subluxed left ankle tendon, said he plans to return to the bullpen before the end of the season, likely in late August or September.

Rangers own worst enemy in Game 3

NEW YORK (AP) - The last thing the Rangers needed to do was help the Kings score.

New York did so on three goals, all of them either deflecting off a Rangers player or getting past goaltender Henrik Lundqvist because he was screened. That was more than enough for Los Angeles to win Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals 3-0 Monday night, moving the Kings within a victory of their second NHL championship in three years.

The worst of all for the Rangers might have been the Kings' first goal, by Jeff Carter - and not only because defenseman Dan Girardi's slide on the ice interfered with Lundqvist's sight line. That goal came with less than a second remaining in the opening session, a crushing way to end New York's first home period of the finals. It seemed to deflate the previously raucous crowd at Madison Square Garden.

And, unlike in the first two overtime games in Los Angeles, that goal showed the Kings could jump ahead; the Rangers never trailed in either game until the Kings won both on overtime goals by Justin Williams and Dustin Brown.

''We got sort of a bad rush read on the first, we deflect it into our net,'' Rangers coach Alain Vigneualt said of Carter's goal with 0.7 seconds remaining in the opening period. ''Same thing happened in the second goal (by defenseman Jake Muzzin).

''On the third goal we played a two-on-one right, take the pass, goes right back on their stick.''

And Mike Richards buried it - burying the Rangers' chances in the third game, and most likely for their first Stanley Cup in 20 years.

''I am just extremely disappointed that we are in this hole,'' said Lundqvist, who faced only 15 shots but had little chance on the goals. ''We have been talking about it after every game that we played really well, but in the end it's about finding ways to win.''

New York has only found ways to lose thus far, and its performance at home was far inferior to what it provided in Los Angeles. Then again, Monday night was easily the Kings' best showing in the finals, particularly by Jonathan Quick.

Fortunately for Quick, though, his teammates were not giving the opposition a boost.

Lundqvist wasn't so lucky.

On the second goal, Muzzin fired a shot from the right point that deflected off Rangers forward Martin St. Louis and into the net on a power play.

Richards finished a 2-on-1 with Trevor Lewis with some inadvertent help from Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh with 2:46 left in the second period. Richards tried to pass from the left slot to Lewis, and McDonagh smoothly blocked it with his skate. But the puck went directly back to Richards, and Lundqvist was out of position to make a save.

With Quick stopping everything, the Kings moved within one win of another Cup.

''It's not over,'' Lundqvist said bravely. ''We are looking at getting the next game, that's all we think about right now is that win. In a game like this, every little play matters and it feels like they had the luck so far in these three games where it feels like the game has been pretty even.

''But they have been finding ways to get the big goals at the right times.''

Quick, Kings on brink of Cup, win 3-0

NEW YORK (AP) - It turns out Jonathan Quick and the Los Angeles Kings are just as good with the lead as they are without it.

That leaves the New York Rangers with little hope of making much of a series out of the Stanley Cup finals.

Quick stopped 32 shots in his best start of the series, Jeff Carter scored in the final second of the first period, Jake Muzzin and Mike Richards added goals in the second, and the Kings beat the Rangers 3-0 on Monday night to move within one win of their second Stanley Cup title in three years.

Los Angeles leads 3-0 and can claim the Cup on Wednesday night in New York. The Kings have already survived three Game 7s on the road, so this amount of success has their confidence soaring.

Quick hardly showed it when he took the podium wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

''I don't think it would be any different if we were down 3-0,'' Quick said. ''We're just trying to win a game in a couple days here. That's the focus.''

After the Rangers blew two-goal leads in each of the first two games of the championship round in Los Angeles, they came home and couldn't get anything going against Quick.

The All-Star was sharp early and in the middle when the Kings built their lead. Not even six power plays could jump-start New York's offense.

''We did a lot of things the right way,'' Quick said. ''Now we get ready for the next one. The fourth one is always the most difficult.''

Los Angeles escaped with two overtime wins at home and then took complete command inside Madison Square Garden.

The Kings grabbed their first lead of the series on Carter's goal and then stretched the edge to three goals in the second - something the Rangers failed to do in California.

While there has been only one comeback from a 3-0 hole in the finals, the Kings erased such a deficit in the first round against San Jose.

''Well, we know it's possible,'' Richards said. ''The last game is always the hardest. We played a good game. We're going to have to play a better game if we're going to want to have success.''

New York's Henrik Lundqvist was hardly at fault on the goals, and finished with 12 saves. He was just outdone by Quick, who was perfect at the other end of the ice.

''You try to stay positive right now, but it's tough. It's really tough,'' Lundqvist said. ''We are doing a lot of good things, but you look at the goals, and we put two in our own net. Then just a tough play on the third one.''

Quick, a Connecticut native who grew up a fan of the Rangers and 1994 Stanley Cup-winning goalie Mike Richter, made a brilliant save with his stick blade to deny Derick Brassard shortly after a Rangers power play. That stop came on the heels of Brassard having two chances during the advantage off a rebound of Brad Richards' shot.

Brassard's first attempt was blocked, and the second was stopped by Quick.

The Kings goalie was also on his toes just 8 seconds into the third when Chris Kreider came in alone but was stopped in tight. That eliminated the optimism the sold-out, towel-waving crowd had of a big comeback.

''You've got to finish in this game. It's a performance-oriented business,'' Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said.

Los Angeles took its first in-game lead in the series when Carter scored his 10th of the playoffs on the Kings' fifth shot. Carter snapped a hard drive that clipped the skate of diving defenseman Dan Girardi in front and caromed inside the right post with 0.7 seconds left.

The red and green lights behind Lundqvist both flashed while the Kings celebrated. At no point did Los Angeles hold the lead at home in the first two games until they ended each contest with an overtime goal.

''It was an unfortunate goal to give up at the end of the period,'' Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh said. ''I thought our guys stayed with it and tried to come out with some energy, and created a lot. It was a tough one.''

The quick pace played into the Rangers' preferred style, but New York managed only four shots in the first period. The Rangers led 2-0 in each of the first two games but couldn't hold on. They nearly took the lead again when Mats Zuccarello faced an empty net at the left post, yet he was stopped by Quick's lunging stick.

The Rangers' early 2-0 lead in the series opener became a 3-2 loss when Justin Williams scored in overtime. They held three two-goal leads in Game 2, only to be thwarted when Kings captain Dustin Brown won it in double overtime on Saturday.

Quick had plenty of support in front of him to post his second shutout in these playoffs and ninth overall in the postseason.

''The team played great in front of me, cleared out a lot of rebounds that I left in front,'' Quick said.

Muzzin made it 2-0 at 4:17 of the second after former Rangers forward Marian Gaborik and Anze Kopitar worked the puck up the right wing wall to Muzzin at the point for a shot that struck New York's Martin St. Louis and found its way past Lundqvist.

Mike Richards finished a 2-on-1 with Trevor Lewis when his attempted pass across bounced back to him off McDonagh and was put it with 2:46 left in the second.

NOTES: Gaborik played his first game at the Garden since being traded by the Rangers in 2013. ... The Rangers are 3 for 44 on the power play at home in the playoffs. Los Angeles went 1 for 4.

RIVER CITY SHARPS

OK, before you all ask if we have lost our minds (you wouldn’t be the only ones!) in looking at the Tampa Bay Rays, at least hear us out. We are aware that the Rays have dropped 14 of their last 15 games and their offense has been completely anemic this season. We also understand that they are facing Cards stud Michael Wacha (4-4, 2.61) tonight in game two of the series. We also know that they have been shut out in three consecutive games! With all of that under consideration, we are going to recommend a play tonight on the home doggie trying to get the ship righted. The Rays will send out Erik Bedard (3-4, 3.61) who has actually been really effective for the Rays but simply hasn’t gotten the run support. The most important thing we are looking at in this game is the fact the Bedard is a lefty and the Cardinals have simply not demonstrated the ability to consistently hit left-handed pitching. The Cards are 2-8 in their last 10 interleague games against left-handed starters and they are 0-7 in Wacha’s last seven road starts. Regression to the mean and the desperate nature of this game for the Rays leads us towards the home team tonight. The Sharps say…
3 UNITS – TAMPA BAY RAYS (+115)

Wednesday's MLB betting cheat sheet: Marlins big 'dogs in record-breaking game

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for Wednesday's major league games:

Dogs Dominate

It was a banner day for underdogs Tuesday, as they went a stunning 11-3 against the moneyline. The only favorites to prevail: Atlanta (-118), which beat Colorado 13-10; Arizona (-133), which prevailed 4-1 over Houston; and St. Louis (-132), which fended off punchless Tampa Bay 1-0.

Miami Mangles AL

The Miami Marlins (+152) continued their stunning interleague run Tuesday, defeating the Texas Rangers 8-5 to run their winning streak over American League teams to 13. That equals the longest such streak in league history; the Marlins (+188, 8.5) will look to break the mark Wednesday in Arlington.

Tyler Time

Tyler Matzek makes his major-league debut Wednesday as he takes the mound for the Rockies (+131, 10) against visiting Atlanta. He'll be facing Braves righty Julio Teheran, who is on a four-start winning streak and has been one of the league's top Under pitchers at 3-10 O/U.

Pitching Notes

* New York Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka looks to build upon his already impressive units won tally as he leads his club into Seattle (+155, 6.5). Tanaka is off to a 9-1 start and has yielded $676 in value to date, good for ninth in the majors.

* Philadelphia lefty Cole Hamels looks for his first Under of the season as the Phillies (-132, 7) welcome the San Diego Padres to Citizens Bank Park. Hamels is 6-0-3 O/U for the year despite allowing one run or fewer in four of those nine starts.

Hitting Notes

* Braves catcher Evan Gattis is on an 11-game hitting streak, batting .395 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in that span. The Braves are 6-5 S/U and 2-9 O/U over that stretch as they resume their series at Coors Field.

* The Tampa Bay Rays have been held scoreless for a franchise-record 28 consecutive innings, a stretch that includes three straight shutouts. The Rays rank 27th in runs scored and 23rd in OPS as they finish their series with St. Louis (-128, 7).

Totals Streak

San Diego Padres (2-8 O/U): The league's strongest Under unit is back to its old self following a brief dalliance with the Over. The offense is the culprit yet again, scoring two runs or fewer in five of the last eight games.

Prop of the Day

It may be worth taking a chance on Arizona -2.5 at Houston; that wager stands at +310. The Diamondbacks are tied for top spot in the majors with a .304 team batting average in June and ranks 11th in the league with a .265 average against lefties.

Injury Notes

* Atlanta outfielder Justin Upton left Tuesday's game with a strained left hamstring and is considered day-to-day. Upton leads the Braves with 14 home runs; the Braves are 10-3 S/U and 9-4 O/U when he goes deep; they're just 24-26 SU and 14-33-3 O/U when he doesn't.

* Washington catcher Wilson Ramos was forced out of Tuesday's win over San Francisco with a strained hamstring. The Nationals are 17-15 SU and 17-13-2 O/U in the 32 games Ramos has missed this season.

Weather Watch

Wind is expected to blow in from center field at 6 mph for Wednesday's game at PNC Park between host Pittsburgh (-117, 7.5) and the Chicago Cubs. Teams combined to hit just three home runs in five games under similar conditions a season ago.

Umpire Note of the Day

Under is 8-2-2 in umpire Paul Emmel's last 12 games behind home plate involving the Braves. Emmel will call the balls and strikes for Wednesday's Atlanta-Colorado tilt.

Game: St. Louis Cardinals @ Tampa Bay Rays
Time: Wednesday 06/11 7:10 PM Eastern
Pick: Tampa Bay +120 (moneyline)

This play may be a hard pill for most to swallow. The Rays' offense has done absolutely nothing for the last 28 innings, producing 0 runs. That will make them a tough call for most, but this is not the first time this has happened to a team. Since the 2004 season there have been eight teams off three straight shutouts and they have gone 5-3 in their next game. The Cardinals aren't exactly in a strong spot here as they are 0-7 in Wacha's last seven road starts. They have managed just two road wins in their last 10 in interleague play vs. a left-handed starter. The Rays sport an 8-3 record at home in their last 11 interleague games vs. a righty. The Rays break out in this one, so play on Tampa Bay.

COLORADO ROCKIES/ATLANTA BRAVES – OVER 10

(Teheran/Matzuk)
This Rockies team is in trouble. They are missing some key guys and have now lost 10 of the last 11 yet they still are the best hitting team in the NL. They are built to score at home and I expect a few runs tonight. The Rockies will be pitching a rookie tonight making his debut so it is the perfect storm for an OVER play. The Rockies are not playing solid defense and their bullpen is no good. Look for the Braves to win much like last night. Take the Braves and the Over.

LAS VEGAS -- The Angels came through in a huge moment for their season last night against the A's with a 2-1 win in the 14th inning. After failing to get a runner home from scoring position in almost every inning during the extra frames, Collin Cowgill hit a solo shot to win the game which extended the Angels season-high win streak to five games.

This current group of Angels that has been underachieving for most of the past two seasons might have passed the gut check test, or at least the June version. They could have folded like the 2013 team, but they battled hard against a club that owns the AL's best record and a 2.5-game lead in AL West.

The A's had beaten them in five of six games prior to this series. Now, the Angels are up 2-0 in this series and go for the sweep tonight behind ace Jered Weaver (7-4, 3.31 ERA), who is a -130 favorite over Tommy Milone (3-3, 3.68). If the playoffs began today, the Angels would finally make the party.

Two weeks ago, the A's knocked Weaver around pretty good in a 6-3 win at Oakland to complete a three-game sweep over the Angels. He gave up a season-high 11 hits and six runs (five earned) and struck out a season-low two batters. That outing is in stark contrast to what he had done against the A's in his previous 11 starts going 8-1 with a 0.87 ERA. He's been even better at home against them, winning his past four starts with a 0.78 ERA.

After starting the season on a rough note where the Angels lost his first three games, he has been stellar -- outside of that Oakland game -- with the Angels going 7-3 behind him. At home, he's gone 4-1 with a 2.05 ERA in his past five starts.

Between the Angels on a winning streak, Weaver being dominant lately at home -- and in the past against Oakland -- there are a few reasons to side with the Angels tonight. But then you've got a few of the A's key batters mired in slumps. Josh Donaldson is everyone's choice to start at third base for the AL in the All-Star game, but he's zero for his last 21. Slumping as well are Alberto Callaspo (1-for-27), Jed Lowrie (0-for-20) and Eric Sogard (1-for-12).

Hamels owns Padres

The Phillies are 11-22 since May 25 and tied with the Cubs for the NL's worst record (26-36), but things seem to get better for them when they play the Padres, who they've beaten 26 of the past 34 meetings. They entered Tuesday's series with the Padres having lost eight of their previous nine, but grabbed a 5-2 win.

That modest one-game win streak should be doubled tonight as Cole Hamels (2-3, 3.49 ERA) takes the mound as a -125 favorite against Tyson Ross (6-5, 3.22). The Phillies have only won twice in Hamels' nine starts, but he can be blamed for maybe only three of those losses. Over his last six starts, he's posted a 2.11 ERA while pitching at least seven innings in each, and comes off his best outing of the season where he out-dueled Johnny Cueto and Cincinnati in an 8-0 win.

While the Padres' players have drastically changed since 2008, it hasn't mattered what lineup has been thrown his way. When Hamels see's the Padres uniform, he takes his game up a notch.

He's 8-1 with a 2.27 ERA in his last 11 starts against San Diego, winning his last five decisions against them.

Tonight's play on the Phillies definitely isn't on the team, it's all about Hamels to keep his strong efforts going.

Ryu rules on road

Johnny Cueto (5-5, 1.97 ERA) is always an imposing name to bet against, but with him going 1-3 with a 4.13 ERA over his past four starts, listening to what his opponent has to offer at plus-money should be considered. In today's case, we have Hyun-jin Ryu (7-2, 3.08) and the Dodgers getting +115 at Cincinnati. In six road starts this season, Ryu is 5-0 with a 0.95 ERA and he's won all four of his starts since coming off the disabled list.

The Dodgers are playing well lately, riding a three-game winning streak as they look to take the third game of this four-game set at Cincinnati. They have the best road record in baseball (22-12) and play a team that is reeling. The Reds have lost five of their last seven and have scored two runs or fewer in each loss. Cueto has pitched well against the Dodgers over his career, but is still only 1-5 in seven starts. Look for the run support to be a problem again for Cueto tonight.

HOUSTON (-125) over Arizona
8:10 p.m. ET

Tonight’s Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy has been the biggest money burner in baseball this season. If you had bet $100 on all of his starts so far you would be down a whopping $1,024. Diamondbacks are 2-11 in games he starts and tonight he is facing Astros’ starter Dallas Keuchel, who is the third best starter so far this season. If you bet $100 on all of his starts you would be plus $783. So let’s back him and the Stros over the snakes tonight.

San Diego @ PHILADELPHIA

San Diego/PHILADELPHIA under 7 -104

(Risking 2.08 units - To Win: 2.00)

Does anyone remember just how good Cole Hamels can be? Hamels' rough start to 2013, captured by that first half high ERA set the narrative for the whole year. He got off to another difficult start this year but his skills tell a different story. In fact, Hamels’ skills remain remarkably consistent and elite and they are touching new highs right now. Over his last six starts covering 43 innings, Hamels has struck out 45 batters and posted an ERA of 2.11, which is right in line with his 2.39 xERA. His groundball/line-drive/fly-ball profile of 53%/18%/34% over that same stretch shows the difficulty batters are having hitting anything hard off him. In fact, Hamels’ groundball rate in his last start was 80%, as he absolutely breezed through 7.2 innings at Cincinnati. He’ll now face a Padres team that is seeing BB’s and that is dead last in the majors with a BA of .210 against southpaws.

Then there’s Tyson Ross. His huge breakout is masked only by his poor team. Ross has found command of a beastly slider and has become one of the toughest starters to hit in the NL. Ross began his skills surge in the 2nd half of last season and has not slowed down in the slightest. He has 77 K’s in 81 innings, an elite 13% swing and miss rate and the highest groundball tilt in the major leagues at 61%. Over his last five starts, Ross has struck out 32 batters in 30 innings with a groundball/fly-ball split of 64%/20%. For this one to go over, one of these offenses has to go off because the other is very likely going to get a gem thrown against them.

Cleveland @ KANSAS CITY

Cleveland +111 over KANSAS CITY

(Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.22)

2:10 PM EST. Trevor Bauer has only made five starts since his call-up in May, but he certainly made the most of them with a BB/K split of 11/35 in 28 innings. Bauer has been a high-profile prospect since taken in the first round of the 2011 draft out of UCLA. Traded from Arizona to Cleveland prior to 2013, he took a big step back at Triple-A Columbus. He struggled to limit walks and keep the ball in the ballpark but much of his 2013 struggles can be attributed to a groin injury. An unlucky 31% hit rate and high 17% hr/f have both hurt his ERA (4.08) and WHIP (1.29) but he’ll now face a Royals team that is dead last in the majors in home runs. Also note that Bauer’s last four starts came against Texas, Colorado, Baltimore and Detroit and he’ll now take a big step down in class. This kid has a high ceiling.

Yordano Ventura had recent concerns around his elbow and thus was skipped for one turn in the rotation. He came back in his last outing and was only able to muster one K in six innings. Over his last three starts, he has a 7/5 K/BB, while allowing 11 ER over 14.2 IP. In seven home starts, he is 1-4 with a 4.25 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 36 IP. Over his last five starts, Ventura has posted a 5.27 ERA along with a 1.61 WHIP. This little guy with the big arm (fastball touches 100 MPH) may be a pitcher in peril and it’s worth nothing that his secondary offerings are definitely a work in progress. The opposing Indians have a top-5 OPS (.754) when facing right handed pitching and the Royals have dropped five of the last six games that Ventura has started.

Boston @ BALTIMORE

Boston +113 over BALTIMORE

(Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.26)

Wei-Yin Chen has four pure quality starts in 12 tries this season. Yeah, he doesn’t walk many and yeah he usually gives the Orioles a chance to win but a 4.13 ERA along with a 1.32 WHIP make this very average pitcher unappealing as the chalk. In 39 innings at Camden Yards, Chen has a BAA of .288. In eight night games, his BAA is .297. Chen is a pitcher that relies heavily on his defense and good fortune, as the ball is almost always in play when he pitches. As a pooch throwing for a team with a good offense, Chen does have value when offered a tag but that’s not the case here.

Rubby De La Rosa has made just two starts but in those 13 innings he has walked just two batters while whiffing 13. Those 13 K’s are supported by his elite 14% swing and miss rate. De La Rosa has experienced a long road back after TJ surgery in 2011 and he’s looking stronger with each passing week. De La Rosa owns pure arm strength and can light up radar guns with his fastball that’ll sit between 93-98 mph and is tough to hit. He throws with whip-like arm action which gives him deception and pitch movement. De La Rosa also uses a slider and changeup. When on, his sharp slider exhibits nasty action and he throws it for strikes consistently. In his two starts, De La Rosa has an xERA of 2.66 to go along with a an elite groundball/fly-ball split of 54%/26%. De La Rosa has a much higher ceiling than Chen and is one of the best “but-low” targets on the market. This is true value.

Arizona @ HOUSTON

Arizona +111 over HOUSTON

(Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.22)

Pitching for the Astros, Dallas Keuchel has been undervalued the entire year…….until now. We’re always mindful of the buy-low/sell high theory and that comes into play here. Keuchel is 7-3 with a 2.50 ERA after 12 starts. The Astros have won seven of his last nine starts and overall in those 12 starts, Keuchel has been a dog 11 times and favored just one time. That one time he was favored occurred at home when he was -114 against Chris Tillman and the Orioles. Baltimore won that game 4-1. Now Keuchel is at his highest price of the year (-120) and that makes us instant sellers. Don’t get us wrong, Keuchel is good but he’s also been greatly aided by an 85% strand rate over his last seven starts. He’ll now face a Diamondbacks team that has quietly won six of their past eight games while scoring 55 times over that span.

In 13 starts, Brandon McCarthy is 1-8 with a 5.13 ERA. A crazy 22% hr/f against RH bats, the second-highest mark in MLB is the main cause of that misleading ERA and what makes that even crazier is that McCarthy has an elite groundball rate of 55%. One could safely call Brandon McCarthy the unluckiest pitcher in baseball but his skills scream out that ERA regression is 100% inevitable. In 79 innings, McCarthy has 72 K’s while issuing just 14 walks. That’s outstanding control with a strong K rate. He also has a groundball/fly-ball split of 55%/23% for one of the best GB/FB profiles in the game. McCarthy’s swinging strike rate of 12% supports his 72 strikeouts. McCarthy’s xERA on the year is 3.06 and his xERA over his past five starts is 2.82. You rarely see a pitcher with an xERA more than two runs higher or lower than his actual ERA but that’s the case with McCarthy. You are about to see significant improvement in McCarthy’s surface stats because his skills say so. This is a top-shelf pitcher at a second or third-tier price. Invest.

Atlanta @ COLORADO

Atlanta -1½ +121 over COLORADO

(Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.42)

It hasn't taken long for Julio Teheran to live up to his lofty prospect status. Teheran posted a 3.20 ERA in 2013 in his his first full MLB season and all he's done since then is post an elite 1.89 ERA and 0.93 WHIP through 13 starts in 2014. There is some ERA regression coming because he’s a fly-ball pitcher but his strikeout and walk ratios are in great shape and his swinging-strike rate of 13% hints there could be a K boost in the very near future. He’ll now face a Rockies team that has lost 14 of 16 and that is without Carlos Gonzalez, Michael Cuddyer, and Nolan Arenado.

The Rockies pitching staff is a complete mess. They have allowed 16, 12 and 13 runs against in three of their past six games and their pen has an ERA of 7.02 over the past 10 games. With injuries decimating its starters, Colorado has called up Tyler Matzek to make his major league debut. Matzek is a replacement starter for Eddie Butler, who was just recently called up and pitched one game before landing on the DL. Matzek is not major-league ready. He’s an emergency starter that will be heading back to the minors after this one start. He came into the year as the #13 prospect in the Rockies organization and has done nothing to improve that ranking. He is always fighting the strike zone and ends up walking too many batters. When a walk rate of 4.2/9 is the best of your career it becomes a big problem. At this park at this level, falling behind in the count and subsequently being forced into throwing fastballs is a big problem that Matzek will not overcome here. In 106 career minor league starts, Matzek has struck out 508 in 537.2 IP and walked 360, which contributed to a cumulative 1.58 WHIP at the minor league level. In 12 games at Colorado Springs this season, Matzek posted a 4.05 ERA, a .265 BAA and surrendered eight jacks in 66 innings. Looks like another long evening for the Rockies.

Here we have a great pitcher, Verlander, and a gamer, Danks going. We don't back Verlander much, just because the price is usually TOO inflated and there's little to no value. But we do look to the UNDER if we can find enough stats/situational analysis to back the UNDER. Danks, who is a gamer, usually finds a way to keep his teams in games and Verlander SHOULD be able to do enough to shut down the White Sox. Add to that these pitchers got an extra day to rest & prepare for the offenses & the fact that the weather could STILL be an issue, at least to keep the ball from flying out of the park. Look for a close game, with Danks keeping the Sox close, and we'll take a 2* stab on the UNDER.
