World Cup Game of the Day: Portugal vs. USA

Portugal vs. USA (-143, +425, Draw +300)

One of the most highly anticipated games of the World Cup group stage takes place Sunday evening as Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal face the upstart Americans at Arena Amazonia in Manaus. The Portuguese need a victory to have any chance of advancing out of Group G, while the U.S. would love to build upon its tournament-opening win over Ghana. But both teams are dealing with significant injury concerns - Ronaldo's the most notable.

Ronaldo is nursing a knee injury that has fueled speculation around the globe, but he's expected to suit up for a Portuguese side that is reeling from a 4-0 trouncing at the hands of a superior German side on Monday. Portugal will need Ronaldo to be at his best against an American side that looked impressive in a 2-1 victory in its opener. But the U.S. will be shorthanded after losing gifted striker Jozy Altidore to a hamstring strain against Ghana.

TV: 6 p.m. ET, ESPN

WORLD RANKINGS: Portugal: No. 4; USA: No. 13.

INJURY REPORT: Portugal: F Cristiano Ronaldo is working through a knee injury but is expected to play Sunday; D Pepe earned a red card against Germany and will miss the contest; D Fabio Coentrao will miss the remainder of the tournament with a groin injury. USA: F Jozy Altidore has a strained hamstring and will sit out the contest; F Clint Dempsey suffered a nasal fracture against Ghana but is expected to play; D Matt Besler was removed in the opener with a hamstring issue but isn't expected to miss any time.

WHAT THE BOOKS SAY: "After being pasted by Germany in their opening matchup Portugal looks to keep their tournament alive by beating a U.S. squad that is battling some injuries. The U.S. needs at least a draw in this match up to keep their tournament hopes alive as they face the very tough German squad on Thursday. With the win over their nemesis Ghana our bettors are all over the U.S. to win this game with 72 percent of the action backing the US and betting the over trend continues as 79 percent of the action in on the over for the 2.5 goal total." - Michael Stewart of Carbon Sports.

ABOUT PORTUGAL: The talk of the tournament on the Portuguese side has been the fitness of Ronaldo, who participated in the majority of his team's training session Wednesday but was seen with his left knee heavily protected. Reports had circulated that the global superstar was putting his career in jeopardy by playing; that report has since been dismissed. Portugal should also be concerned about its suddenly thin defense, which will be without Pepe and Centrao; Ricardo Costa and Andre Almeida are expected to start in their place.

ABOUT USA: Coach Jurgen Klinsmann is a master of unpredictability - and the absence of Altidore will make it even more difficult to guess what strategy the Americans will use Sunday evening in Manaus. The Americans will likely go with either Aron Johannsson or Chris Wondolowski in Altidore's place; no other major changes are expected. Klinsmann is no stranger to Sunday's foe, having been at the helm of the German team that upended Portugal 3-1 to claim third place at the 2006 World Cup.

TRENDS:

* The teams are even at two wins and a draw apiece in five all-time meetings, with each side scoring five goals.
* Ronaldo has taken 55 shots in his World Cup career but has scored just twice.
* The Americans have only two shutouts in their previous 24 World Cup games.
* Portugal has just one victory in its last eight World Cup contests.

Ronaldo poised to face USA in crucial game
The Telegraph

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to ignore the ongoing pain of a knee injury to lead Portugal’s attempts to avoid World Cup elimination against USA in Manaus. Ronaldo, who has been plagued by tendinitis in his left knee since the closing weeks of La Liga with Real Madrid, was forced to play with a strapping on the joint during Monday’s 4-0 Group G defeat against Germany.

Sunday's WCup Tips
By Toby Maxtone-Smith

United States vs. Portugal (ESPN, 6:00 p.m. ET)

The biggest game on Sunday in the 2014 World Cup may well decide who goes through from Group G, as USA play Portugal in the steamy heat of the Arena Amazônia, in Manaus. Portugal need to win, while a draw would give USA a great chance of qualifying. A win for Klinsmann’s men would all but guarantee progress to the last 16 for the second World Cup in a row. The stakes could hardly be higher, and fans all across the nation will be gripped to their television screens.

For Portugal, who were hammered 4-0 in their opening game by Germany, there are a number of selection issues. Key defenders Pepe and Fabio Coentrão are unavailable through suspension and injury respectively, while there are still some niggling doubts over the fitness of star man Cristiano Ronaldo. Rest assured though - unless Ronaldo can barely walk, he will play. Portugal need their talisman.

For the US, Jozy Altidore’s tournament tragically ended with a hamstring injury in the win over Ghana. San Jose Earthquakes target-man Chris Wondolowski looks set to step in. His international record is good, with nine goals in 21 games, and he has the ability to hold up the ball, which will be particularly useful in a game where the US will certainly not dominate possession.

So, to the betting. Portugal are the favourites at 4/5 with sportsbook.ag. Since the opening round of matches this priced has eased out from 4/6, but this does not seem an accurate representation of what we saw. Portugal were an indisciplined mess, over-reliant on an unfit Cristiano Ronaldo, while the USA showed their mettle with a brave victory over a talented Ghana side. A USA win is at 29/10, but I’m going to go with a draw at 57/20. This is a result USA would take, and the way they dug deep to come away with victory over Ghana suggests to me that this is a team capable of digging out big results.

In the first goalscorer market, I love the look of Wondolowski at 10/1. He will almost definitely play, and his goalscoring record in the MLS is to be envied - 80 in 140 games at San Jose.

The other options in the market don't look great.

For Portugal, Ronaldo is a 9/4 shot, but for someone who's not 100% fit that doesn't look good. Otherwise, their goalscoring options look pretty thin. All three recognised strikers they have - Hugo Almeida, Eder and Helder Postiga - are not great goalscorers.

Wondolowski, who is 6'1", will be massively helped by the fact that Pepe is suspended. The USA rely a lot on crosses for their chances, and Wondolowski will get chances, particularly with Portugal left-back Fabio Coentrão injured. He will also have the advantage that he plays as a loan striker, and so will not have to ‘share’ his chances with a partner.

Top bet: Draw at 57/20, Chris Wondolowski to score first at 10/1

Belgium vs. Russia (ESPN, 3:00 p.m. ET)

Two European sides go head to head in Sunday’s first match as Belgium play Russia. Belgium had a tough time getting past Algeria. They eventually won 2-1, with the introduction of Marouane Fellaini crucial. Russia were involved in a rather boring 1-1 draw with South Korea.

There is a good chance Fellaini could start, along with another substitute who scored in Dries Mertens. Manager Marc Wilmots may leave out disappointing Spurs duo Mousa Dembélé and Nacer Chadli. A substitute also scored for Russia: the much-maligned (unfairly, in my eyes) Aleksandr Kerzhakov could well start against Belgium, with Aleksandr Kokorin moved out wide.

Belgium are 87/100 favourites, with Russia at 31/10, and I have this down as a low-scoring game. Both teams find it hard to break down stubborn defences and both strikers, Romelu Lukaku and Kerzhakov, are good players but do waste plenty of chances. Under 2.5 goals at 77/100 is an appealing bet.

In the First Goalscorer market, odds of 9/1 about Fellaini show just how impressed bookmakers and punters were with his contribution against Algeria. Dries Mertens is available at 7/1, while Aleksandr Kerzhakov may make a bit more appeal at 6/1.

Top bet: Under 2.5 goals at 77/100

South Korea vs. Algeria (ESPN, 12:00 p.m. ET)

Both South Korea and Algeria came away from their first games with great credit for how they played, but both will be a little disappointed at the result. A hard-working South Korea outplayed Russia for long periods of their 1-1 draw. Algeria, meanwhile, made a mockery of their status as supposed group whipping-boys by leading Belgium until the 70th minute, before losing 2-1. They can now not afford to lose this. However, having probably been the weakest team at the 2010 World Cup, the Algerians come to Brazil with some real attacking talent. They could really surprise people in what is a relatively weak group.

South Korea are made the favourites by bookmakers at 6/5, with Algeria at 9/4 and the draw a similar price at 12/5. There is little room for manoeuvre in these prices, so it may be worth turning to the over/under markets for some value. Here, I find it surprising that over 2.5 is as long as 5/4.

This is a game both teams would badly like to win and, given what we have seen so far at this World Cup, both teams will go for it. While centre-forward is a problem position for the Taeguk Warriors, they create plenty of chances, and Algeria have some superb creative midfielders in Sofiane Feghouli, Riyad Mahrez and Yacine Brahimi.

Top bet: Over 2.5 goals at 5/4

2014 WORLD CUP SOCCER

SOUTH KOREA vs. ALGERIA

Kickoff: Sunday, 3:00 p.m. EDT
Estadio Beira-Rio – Porto Alegre, Brazil

Line:
South Korea +120, Algeria +225, Tie +240
Over/Under: 2.5 Goals (Over +125, Under -153)

Two teams desperate for a win will clash on Sunday afternoon when Group H play continues with South Korea facing underdog Algeria.

Neither team was able to win its World Cup opener, as Algeria fell 2-1 to a heavily-favored Belgium squad, while South Korea earned a 1-1 tie with Russia. Both teams still have a chance to reach the Round of 16, and a win on Sunday will go a long way in getting to that knockout round. But the Taeguk Warriors will still be missing midfielder Ha Dae-sung due to ligament damage in his left foot.

South Korea held the possession advantage against Russia (52% to 48%), but was outshot 16-10 by their opponent, including 10-6 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were an even 4-4, and the Taeguk Warriors were very disciplined with zero offsides calls and just seven fouls committed, compared to Russia's 15 fouls. However, South Korea picked up three yellow cards with forward Son Heung-min and midfielders Ki Sung-yueng and Koo Ja-Cheol all getting booked. Should any of this trio get another yellow card on Sunday, he would be unable to play in the final game of the group stage. South Korea knows it will get some counter-attack chances when Algeria pushes forward, but this game should not see more than two goals total.

Algeria failed to score a goal in the entire 2010 World Cup, but it took the club only 25 minutes to tally against Belgium with Sofiane Feghouli's penalty kick. However, the team had zero shots on goal the rest of the match and finished with only three total shots. In contrast, Belgium took 16 shots (10 on goal) and two scores coming at 70 minutes and 80 minutes. Algeria was also dominated in possession (65% to 35%), and both clubs were quite physical on their challenges with Algeria whistled for 18 fouls while Belgium was called for 20 fouls.

USA tries to knock out Portugal on Sunday

2014 WORLD CUP SOCCER

UNITED STATES vs. PORTUGAL

Kickoff: Sunday, 6:00 p.m. EDT
Arena Amazonia – Manaus, Brazil

Line:
Portugal -125, United States +290, Tie +285
Over/Under: 2.5 Goals (Over -135, Under +105)

After getting thrashed in its opening match of the 2014 World Cup, Portugal faces a must-win situation Sunday night when it takes on a confident United States squad.

The Americans scored a goal in the first minute of their tournament opener and after allowing the equalizer at the 82-minute mark, John Brooks Jr. regained the lead for the U.S. just four minutes later with the game-winning goal for a crucial 2-1 victory. Meanwhile, Portugal was thumped by Germany 4-0, as Thomas Muller netted a hat trick. In addition to the poor result, Portugal is now dealing with a knee injury to star forward Cristiano Ronaldo, which could keep him off the field on Sunday. Portugal will definitely be without two key defenders in Fabio Coentrao (groin injury) and Pepe (red card). However, the United States will be missing starting striker Jozy Altidore, who is likely finished for the 2014 World Cup because of a left hamstring injury. Although the Americans are a sizable underdog on Sunday, these teams are 2-2-1 with five goals apiece versus one another in their past five meetings.

Although the United States picked up a key three points against Ghana, the club was outshot 21-8, but only 8-7 in terms of shots on goal. Ghana possessed the ball 60% of the time and produced seven corner kicks, compared to just three for the Americans. But the U.S. did play a very disciplined match, committing only 12 fouls with zero cards and one offsides call. Midfielder Clint Dempsey opened the scoring in the first 30 seconds of the game with the fifth quickest goal in World Cup history, and well before reserve defenseman John Brooks Jr. won it at the 86-minute mark with his header off a Graham Zusi corner kick. Dempsey might play with a protective mask over his face after breaking his nose in the win over Ghana. Altidore will certainly be missed, as he has scored 22 goals in 70 matches with the U.S. team, and it's not clear who will replace him. The most likely options are Aron Johannsson and Chris Wondolowski. Johannson is younger (23) and faster, but Wondolowski (31) has more experience and is better ball-striker with 80 goals over the past five MLS seasons.

Portugal will be eliminated from knockout-round contention with a loss, but the Seleccao do not want to settle for a tie here. If Ronaldo's knee prevents him from playing, look for Heider Postiga to take his place. Postiga has netted 27 goals in 69 matches since 2003. Portgual will also ask more offense out of midfielders Andre Almeida and Joao Moutinho. Despite the 4-0 losing result, Seleccao actually outshot Germany 14-13 with both teams putting nine of those shots on goal. And the score was only 2-0 before Pepe was given a red card for head-butting at the 37-minute mark, putting his team in a no-win situation playing down a man for more than 50 minutes. Portugal also had more corner kicks (six) than Germany (four), and ball possession was a nearly even split at 54% for Germany and 46% for Portugal. Seleccao has to put the first match behind them, and it is imperative for them to strike first in this must-win contest.

World Cup

USA +½ +135 over Portugal

For a country that prides itself on playing its own rendition of football, the United States of America can boast a talented lot of footballers to compete on the world’s grandest stage. The USA enters the 2014 World Cup with remarkable momentum. Some American supporters have made the audacious claim that their brilliant squad will survive a very difficult Group G. The USA/Portugal fixture can crystallize this picture marvelously. The Americans have a lot to be proud of. In 2010, they were able to advance to the knockout stage after they won their group. This included a thrilling draw against America’s beloved friend England. England was the heavy favorite to win the group but the English had to play second fiddle to the Stars and Stripes. Now, the Americans enter a matchup against a highly touted Portugal squad, led by Cristiano Ronaldo. Many speculate that the Americans cannot compete but the evolution of Michael Bradley and Josey Altidore (although the latter is out) has many claiming otherwise. America can win this game, they are a proven and battle-tested team and they dominated CONCACAF qualification, finishing first overall.

Portugal is an exceptional football club but clearly the Americans are underrated and overlooked. This stage has been profitable for the Americans previously. America has been able to surprise the world on numerous occasions playing the role of the underdog. The key to this contest will be if the Americans can get Dempsey and Bradley started early, forcing the Portuguese to play a more defensive game, which will force them to clip the wings of brilliant forward Christiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo and company are driven by their need to outshine other great players and teams but that did not happen in their first game, where Portugal was hammered 4-0 by the Germans while the Americans defeated a tough Ghana club, 2-1. A loss like the one that Portugal suffered is not easy to bounce back from and it puts a lot more focus on defending. The Americans have the momentum, a win under their belt and a chance to solidify their position by doing anything but losing outright. One has to like their chances of doing exactly that.

World Cup Preview: Belgium - Russia
By Greg Stobart

Marc Wilmots' side was unconvincing in its opener against Algeria and will look to improve against Fabio Capello's men.
RIO DE JANEIRO — Belgium made hard work of its first match in World Cup Group H but Marc Wilmots’ much-hyped side managed to come from behind to beat Algeria.

As the favorite to win the group, Belgium can expect to again face a team prepared to sit deep and defend in numbers when it plays Russia on Sunday.

The main injury concern for Belgium is a groin problem for Vincent Kompany, but the captain is expected to lead his side out again at the Maracana, providing vital leadership and quality in the heart of the defense.

Romelu Lukaku was disappointing in the 58 minutes he played against Algeria but the Chelsea striker will continue to lead the line for Belgium, with his pace and power likely to cause problems for Russia’s slow defense.

The most likely change for Belgium is a starting place for Marouane Fellaini after the Manchester United midfielder came off the bench to score against Algeria, with Tottenham winger Nacer Chadli likely to make way. The other scorer against the North Africans – Dries Mertens – is also pushing for a start.

Wilmots has claimed that Eden Hazard is among the top five players in the world but to prove it the Chelsea winger will have to improve on his record of six international goals in 45 matches. He could make the difference and provide the extra quality to get past Russia.

Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev made the mistake of the tournament so far – and there have been a few – when he spilled the ball into his own net in the 1-1 draw with South Korea.

It was the nadir of a shaky display throughout the game for Akinfeev but Russia coach Fabio Capello has insisted he will not change his goalkeeper to face Belgium.

Russia is unbeaten in its last 11 matches under Fabio Capello but it lacked drive and quality on the ball against South Korea, with Roman Shirokov’s influence badly missed in midfield as he misses the tournament through injury.

As he looks to guide Russia to just its third ever victory at the World Cup finals, Capello may hand a start to 31-year-old striker Alexander Kerzhakov after his equalizer as a substitute in the first game.

Toronto Blue Jays at Cincinnati Reds

When Cincinnati Reds and ace hurler Johnny Cueto take on Toronto Blue Jays with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey in the rubber match of this three game interleague series they'll do so with conditions on their side. Cueto with a 1.92 ERA, 0.83 WHIP in 15 starts will handcuff Jays who have suddenly lost their swing. Take away Friday's 14 run outburst Jays have crossed 3 or less in 9 of 13 averaging just 2.2 runs/game. Stick with Cincinnati knowing Reds are on a 5-1 stretch at home w/Cueto including three shutout affairs and that Jays have struggle on the road with Dickey posting a 1-5 mark over his six starts. This being a day game and rubber match sets the table for Cinci as Jays are 0-4 in road day games with Dickey, 3-7 overall in road rubber matches including 1-3 handing the ball to the knuckleballer.

MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #12
•Visiting Mounds Have Been Kind To Keuchel: Dallas Keuchel has become the ace of the Houston Astros staff and he has been able to elevate the team on the road. Through Keuchel's seven road starts this season, the Astros are 6-1. The left-hander has only allowed an average of 1.5 runs per game on the road this season. Interestingly enough though, the under has only hit on two of those outings. The Astros and Keuchel will be in Tampa Bay Sunday.

•Dickey's Road Record Needs To Be Scene To Be Believed: The Toronto Blue Jays will be sending R.A. Dickey to the mound at the Great American Ball Park Sunday. The Jays should be weary as Dickey is led the club to a 1-5 record on the road this season. Though Dickey has been giving up a solid five hits per game on the road, he has been giving up almost four runs per game.

•Danks Horrendously Poor Against Twins: The Chicago White Sox could possibly be sending the worst pitcher to the mound when they play the Minnesota Twins Sunday. John Danks has steered the White Sox to s 3-13 record in his last 16 starts against the Twins, including seven straight loses. The left-hander has given up an average of just over seven hits per game and has only three times allowed less than six hits. Danks has also given up an average of four runs to the Twins and have only allowed less than three runs twice.

•Pirates OF Marte Out Until Monday: Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Startling Marte is dealing with a family matter in the Dominican Republic and will be out until Monday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Jose Tabata is starting in left field Saturday against the Chicago Cubs in place of Marte. Marte is batting .258 with five home runs, 26 RBIs, 34 runs scored and 17 steals this season. He batted .280 in 2013.

•Giants Calling Up 2B Panik: The San Francisco Giants called up second baseman Joe Panik from Triple-A Fresno on Saturday, according to the San Jose Mercury News. The club needs to make two roster moves to activate him. They have to add Panik to the 40-man roster and remove a player from the 25-man roster. Panik, 23, was the Giants' first-round draft pick in 2011. He is batting .321 with five home runs, 14 doubles and 50 runs in 74 games with Fresno. Second base has been a weak position, offensively, for the Giants this year. Brandon Hicks has eight home runs but is batting .172. Joaquin Arias is batting just .183 with only singles. Ehire Adrianza is batting only .208. Marco Scutaro, who was projected as the starter before spring training, has been out with a back injury all season and is not expected to be ready for full-time action this year.

•Sabathia, Taking Next Step, Heads South: The New York Yankees are sending CC Sabathia to Tampa, and Sabathia couldn't be happier. Sabathia is set to leave town Sunday, but only because he's ready for the next stage of work as he tries to come back from the right knee injury that has sidelined him since early May. He threw another bullpen session Saturday at Yankee Stadium, is scheduled to face hitters Tuesday, and hopes to throw in some sort of game next weekend. The Yankees still don't expect Sabathia back in the major leagues for quite a while -- general manager Brian Cashman has said August -- but the 33-year-old left-hander seems to be getting more encouraged by the day.

"I'm trying to go as fast as possible," Sabathia said. "Hopefully it's not five starts [in the minors]. I feel good. I'm optimistic." Sabathia is wearing a brace to stabilize the knee, and said the results so far have been good. But he also knows that there are bigger tests ahead. "I got after it a little [in Saturday's bullpen session]," he said. "This is the time to test it. I will in Tampa."

Oakland Athletics -115 over Boston

Nice winner on the Brewers here yesterday and today we take advantage of a cheap price on the A's, who are a vastly better team from top to bottom as compared to the Red Sox. The Sox defense of last year's World Series title has been a disaster, but they continue to be priced as if they were contenders. Starter Jon Lester has not been nearly effective on the road as he has been at home and the A's continue to pound left-handed starters, going 18-7 this year and a profitable 83-58 (+21.7 units) the last three seasons. Oakland also feasts on inferior teams as they are 20-9 this season against opponents with a losing record. After winning the first three games of this series the A's are now 15-6 against Boston in the last 21 of the series, including an 11-1 mark in this ballpark. Oakland sweeps the Sox!

Instead of using Friday’s miracle comeback to turn things around, the Blue Jays went right back to their bad habits yesterday and got whacked 11-1 for their 11th loss in their past 14 games. The Jays staff has given up 33 runs over the past four games and now it is R.A. Dickey’s turn against the hottest offense in baseball. Current Reds’ batters own a .909 OPS against Dickey and the veteran knuckleballer has been yielding a lot of home runs lately. Dickey left his last start with tightness in his groin and has scuffled on the road this season with a 5.13 ERA. He’s been mediocre the entire year to begin with (15 starts - 4.08 ERA, 1.39 WHIP) and his horrible skills while pitching from the stretch have torpedoed his overall skills. Dickey is walking too many batters, he’s been tagged for eight jacks in the past six games and he’ll be facing a Cinci team that has scored a league-high 53 runs over the past six games. This start isn’t likely to turn out well.

The Jays hit home runs and that’s how they score. If they’re not hitting bombs, they’re as meek as a mouse lately. On Thursday in New York, Toronto hit two, two runs shots and scored 4 runs. On Friday, they belted out four jacks in the 14-run outburst. 72% of the Jays’ runs over the past 15 games have come via the long ball and that’s a difficult way to live. The problem Toronto faces here is that Johnny Cueto does not give up many HR’s. In eight home starts covering 59 innings, Cueto has been taken yard just six times and two of those came in one game on a windy night against the Brewers. Cueto has allowed just one home run in his last seven starts. He comes into this game with a 1.92 ERA and an even more impressive 1.68 ERA at home. He has an oppBA of .169 and at home that BAA drops to .153. Cueto also has a 52% groundball rate and an elite line-drive rate of 16%. Cueto has a great chance to absolutely breeze through this Toronto lineup, as the Jays continue to swing for the fences every AB. It’s the red-hot Reds’ offense that is likely to connect and go deep a few times and put up another crooked number.

How the U.S. approaches this second of three group stage matches will certainly be impacted by the results of the Germany-Ghana clash being played 24 hours earlier. If Germany prevails and goes to six points (zero for Ghana), look for the Yanks to play it very close to the vest against Ronaldo and Company. A draw could be a very positive result, all because Portugal was hammered by four goals in its opening match against the Germans. A stalemate would leave the U.S. with four points and a "plus one" in the all-important tie-breaker category. Even a four-goal defeat of the Americans by Germany in the final Group G, which is highly unlikely, would force Portugal to beat Ghana by a similar margin. We recommend betting 1-unit on the USA-Portugal match to end in a draw.

Complimentary MLB Pick for June 22nd, 2014

Game: San Francisco Giants @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Time: Sunday 06/22 4:10 PM Eastern
Pick: Arizona +135 (moneyline) at 5Dimes

Fifth straight road game for San Francisco, a team in a huge slump on a 2-9 run. The Giants are 2-6 against a right-handed starter, and face Mike Bolsinger, who has walked just eight in 30 innings with 28 strikeouts. In fact, he's only walked two at home in 14+ innings. The Giants are 3-8 in Madison Bumgarner's last 11 starts vs. a team with a losing record. Arizona has plenty of offensive punch, 12th in runs scored, 11th in slugging, and batting average. The Diamondbacks are 9-4 against the NL West, so grab the home dog. Play the Diamondbacks.

Washington ML (-128) vs Atlanta Tanner Roark takes the hill today against Atlanta and he has been pitching well lately. In his last 8 starts, covering 51.2 innings he has given up just 41 hits, 1.00 WHIP and a 1.92 ERA. During the month of June he is 3-1 with a 1.38 ERA. He has been a bit of a tough luck loser at home this year, with a 3-3 record, but just a 1.58 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 2.34 BAA. Against Atlanta, he had a rough outing at Turner Field but that was back in April and he has been pitching much better of late. In his only other appearance against Atlanta (again in Turner Field) last year, he surrendered 1 hit in 4 innings of relief pitching. Atlanta starter Ervin Santana has been going the other way. He started lights out this season, but in his last 7 starts (covering 42.1 innings) he has allowed 29 ER (6.17 ERA), on 51 hits and a WHIP of 1.61. Washington would like to salvage a split in this series and hold onto first place in the NL East. Today I think they get it done.

Bruno Bets - Double Play Nationals

This one appears to be a huge pitching mismatch to me. The Nats broke the Bravos' strangle-hold on them at home last night and today could get ugly, IMO. Roark has been an absolute beast at home holding a tiny 1.58 ERA pitching there. I have a lot of key numbers to back this play, but there is one that REALLY stands out....(.212). The Braves road BA. I could add the fact that Atlanta has a combined team BA of .184 against Roark, but why bother?

Let's talk about Santana a bit; LHBs have pasted him to the tune of a .373 OB% and the Nats have a team BA of .293 facing him. L/M is what I expected and I personally will be adding a "half-value" Washington Nationals -1½ (+170) play. I do not expect a ton of scoring here, though. Mostly one-sided, but I'd be very careful if considering the Under. The Nationals may just take out some frustrations here?

Josh Daniels - 1* White Sox

Play we are Taking the Chicago White Sox at plus money. We are looking at Danks (6-5) 3.97 ERA Vs Hughes (7-3) 3.09 ERA. When we look deeper into the numbers we see that Danks on the road over the last 3 years in 4.79 on the road and 2.89 in June. while he has struggled against Minn last 3 season with an ERA of 5.63 his hitters splits are only .278/.347/.444, tells me while he has given up some hits has ran into a little bad luck. Danks is good at going deep into games when he gets over 50 pitches his hitters splits actually go down to .241/.310/.375.

Hughes on the other hand has really struggled against the CWS. He has an ERA this year against them of 7.20, and in the last 3 years at home he is 5.35 at home but this year his first year calling Target Field home his ERA isn't very good either its 4.25. Hughes when he gets deep into games (over 50 pitches) doesn't fair as well as Danks does, his hitters splits actually get a lot higher .304/.346/.544. He gives up a lot of long balls, and that is what the CWS are good at. Today we have 4 premium plays at the site below for only $19, sign up today. Back to this game I see a lot of value in the White Sox. Final Score CWS 7 Min 5.
