MLB roundup: Astros fire Porter
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

The Houston Astros fired manager Bo Porter on Monday after a 59-79 record in his second season.

General manager Jeff Luhnow named Tom Lawless as the interim manager for the remainder of the 2014 season. Luhnow also fired bench coach Dave Trembley.

"This was not an easy decision to make. We wish Bo nothing but the best in the future," Astros owner Jim Crane said in a statement. "Jeff has my full support moving forward. Our goal to bring a championship to Houston remains."

Porter, 42, had been the Astros manager since the start of the 2013 season after being named to the position on Sept. 27, 2012, while serving as third base coach for the Washington Nationals. He compiled a 110-190 record (.367 winning percentage) in parts of two seasons as Astros manager.

Adam Everett will join the coaching staff, replacing Trembley as bench coach. The remaining coaches will continue in their current roles.

---The Seattle Mariners' suspended catcher Jesus Montero for the remainder of the season following an altercation with a team scout last week.

Montero was on a rehab assignment with short-season Everett when he went after a cross-checker scout with a bat during Thursday's game when the scout heckled him.

Montero went into the stands with a bat after the scout ordered him to hustle off the field in Spanish and had an ice cream sandwich sent to him in the dugout.

---The Philadelphia Phillies traded outfielder John Mayberry Jr. to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league third baseman Gustavo Pierre.

The trade was made before Sunday's midnight waiver trade deadline

Mayberry, 30, batted .213 with six home runs and 21 RBI in 63 games (29 starts) for the Phillies this season and had recently been on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley for left wrist inflammation.

---St. Louis Cardinals right hander Michael Wacha threw 34 pitches in a rehab game Sunday night for Double-A Springfield at Tulsa. He allowed a hit and a walk with a strikeout.

Cardinals right hander Jason Motte pitched the eighth inning of that game and threw 12 pitches in a 1-2-3 inning. The organization hasn't decided the next step for either pitcher yet.

---The Cleveland Indians activated designated hitter Jason Giambi off the disabled list. The 43-year-old Giambi had been on the DL since June 12 with an inflamed knee.

He also has missed time this season because of a broken rib and strained calf.

In 47 at-bats this year, Giambi is hitting .128 with two home runs and five RBIs.

---With rosters eligible to be expanded up to 40 players as of Sept. 1, Miami activated LHP Dan Jennings and RHP Carter Capps off the disabled list.

Capps, who has hit 100 mph with his fastball, has a 4.78 ERA in 96 career innings in the majors, including 3.00 in nine innings this season.

Capps, 24, hasn't pitched in the majors since May 25.

Rangers LHP Holland finally ready to make season debut
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Left-hander Derek Holland will make his long overdue debut Tuesday for the Rangers.

Holland tore cartilage in his left knee while falling while playing with his dog in January. He would require microfracture surgery. Nearly eight months after the surgery and with the Rangers mired in last place in the American League West, Holland will make his 2014 debut against the Royals.

"Just to know where he is, really just finding out No. 1 his physical abilities," said Rangers manager Ron Washington, of the significance of Holland pitching in September. "To find out where he is in executing pitching. Those type of things."

"He'll go into the winter knowing that he's just got to do his winter stuff to be strong in spring training. He made his way back. He's healthy."

Holland won 16 games in 2011 and has been a double-figure winner the past three seasons.

Holland made six rehab starts with Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock, going 2-1 with a 4.43 ERA, throwing 98 pitches on Thursday in his previous start, so he has progressed to throw 100-plus pitches Tuesday.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet
By Kevin Rogers

Tigers at Indians – 7:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
DET: Lobstein (0-0, 3.09 ERA)
CLE: Carrasco (6-4, 3.01 ERA)

Series recap: The Tigers avenged a July home series loss to the Indians in Monday’s 12-1 blowout at Cleveland as +105 underdogs. David Price rebounded from an awful start against the Yankees in his previous outing as the former Cy Young Award winner tossed seven solid innings on Monday, while the Tigers won their fourth straight contest at Progressive Field.

What to watch for: Following a horrendous April, Carlos Carrasco has pitched terrific for the Tribe of late by allowing two earned runs in his last four outings (3-1 team record). The Indians are currently on a 16-3 run to the ‘under’ in the past 19 games, including seven consecutive ‘unders’ in Game 2’s of a series. Since the All-Star break, the Tigers own a 2-6 record in their past eight Game 2’s of a road set, including a 1-4 mark off a victory in an away series opener.

Pirates at Cardinals – 8:15 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
PIT: Locke (6-3, 3.51 ERA)
STL: Wainwright (15-9, 2.59 ERA)

Series recap: It took until the beginning of September, but the Cardinals finally made it back to the top of the NL Central after rallying past the Pirates on Monday, 5-4. St. Louis improved to 6-2 this season at home against Pittsburgh, while the Redbirds have won six of the past nine meetings with the Pirates.

What to watch for: The Cardinals are a perfect 6-0 in Adam Wainwright’s last six home outings against the Pirates since the start of last season. In three of those starts, Wainwright didn’t allow a run, while giving up a grand total of five runs in those six victories. Monday’s ‘over’ snapped a seven-game ‘under’ streak for the Pirates, while Pittsburgh has dropped eight of its past 10 contests away from PNC Park.

Mariners at Athletics – 10:05 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
SEA: Paxton (4-1, 1.83 ERA)
OAK: Gray (13-7, 3.03 ERA)

Series recap: The A’s bounced back from an awful series against the Angels this past weekend to pound the Mariners on Monday, 6-1 as -145 home favorites. Oakland plated five runs in the opening inning on Monday, as the A’s put up just four runs during the entire four-game series loss at Los Angeles.

What to watch for: Following a 5-0 record in July, Oakland right-hander Sonny Gray struggled in August by posting a 1-5 ledger in six starts. However, Gray has dominated Seattle this season with a 3-0 mark in three starts, while allowing just two earned runs in those outings. The Mariners have responded well off a road loss since late June, putting together an incredible 11-0 record in this situation.

Nationals at Dodgers – 10:10 PM EST

Probable Pitchers:
WSH: Fister (12-5, 2.55 ERA)
LAD: Kershaw (16-3, 1.73 ERA)

Series recap: The Nationals held off the Dodgers last night, 6-4 to cash as short favorites, while improving to 3-1 on its current West Coast swing. Washington has grabbed three of four meetings with Los Angeles this season, but the lone loss came against tonight’s starter Clayton Kershaw in an 8-3 defeat in mid-May.

What to watch for: Kershaw is in line for the National League Cy Young award, as the Dodgers own a spectacular 15-1 record in his past 16 trips to the mound. Doug Fister has stumbled of late for Washington by dropping his last two starts against Philadelphia and San Francisco, while allowing eight earned runs in those defeats. Fister has cashed the ‘over’ in his past five outings, while Washington is 4-1 to the ‘over’ in its last five road contests.

MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #23
•The Dodgers Call Up Joc Pederson: Lots of minor leaguers will make their way to the bigs starting today as minor league seasons end and major league rosters expand. One of the better ones coming up is Joc Pederson, who was just called up by the Dodgers from Triple-A Albuquerque. Pederson won the Pacific Coast League MVP Award after batting .303/.435/.582 with 33 home runs and 30 stolen bases over 121 games this season. It’s an open question how much playing time he’ll get, but Don Mattingly now has good young player at his disposal who can handle all three outfield positions.

•Hamels, Phillies Bullpen Combine To No-Hit Braves: Wildness cost Cole Hamels a chance at his first no-hitter, but the Philadelphia Phillies left-hander got to share in a combined one. Hamels didn't allow a hit through six innings and the bullpen did the rest as the Phillies recorded their first shared no-hitter and 12th overall in a 7-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday afternoon before 34,178 at Turner Field. Hamels, who came in 3-0 with a 1.16 ERA in his past four starts against the Braves, walked five and hit a batter, but also struck out seven. He threw 108 pitches in the heat and humidity, with 66 of them strikes.

"It wasn't a hard decision," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg of removing Hamels. "He was pretty much spent ... and he wasn't going to go nine (innings)." Left-hander Jake Diekman struck out two in the seventh inning, right-hander Ken Giles fanned the side in the eighth and closer Jonathan Papelbon closed the no-hitter out in the ninth, getting second baseman Phil Gosselin to line out softly to first baseman Darin Ruf for the final out of the combined no-hitter. "I understood coming around the sixth inning that it was going to be a short game," Hamels said. "It was nice to see what we could do together. It was fun to watch them and create something very special."

•Mariners Suspend Montero For Rest Of Season: The Seattle Mariners' suspended catcher Jesus Montero for the remainder of the season on Monday following an altercation with a team scout last week. Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik called the behavior of Montero and cross-checker Butch Baccala "unacceptable" and "embarrassing."

"We are extremely disappointed in both of their actions. It is unacceptable," Zduriencik said. "This organization doesn't condone that type of behavior. It is being addressed as we speak. There are no excuses for either party. We have none. We don't intend to make any. It's something that is extremely disappointing and embarrassing for the organization and for those two individuals." Baccala, who was overseeing other Mariners scouts, was apparently teasing Montero about his weight. Montero had reported to spring training 40 pounds overweight. At the time of the incident, Montero was acting as first base coach.

After exchanging words, Montero had to be physically restrained when he tried to enter the stands where the scout was sitting while carrying a bat in his hands. Montero swore at the scout, threw the ice cream sandwich at him and then was pulled back by Everett pitching coach Nasusel Cabrera, according to the Boise official scorer. Montero was not ejected from the game. He remained in the Everett dugout until the end of the contest. Everett won 13-8. Montero, 24, is batting .286 with 16 home runs and 74 RBIs in 97 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season.

•Top prospect Norris Gets September Call-Up: Daniel Norris is the latest Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospect to graduate to the big-leagues this season after becoming one of the club’s September call-ups, multiple industry sources told Sportsnet. The promotion caps a season of rapid progress for the 21-year-old, who began the campaign at single-A Dunedin, dominated there, before moving up to double-A New Hampshire and, later, triple-A Buffalo. In 26 games, 25 starts, at the three levels, the 2011 second-round pick is 12-2 with a 2.53 ERA in 124.2 innings, with 163 strikeouts against 43 walks. Norris joins Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez in breaking through with the Blue Jays this year. Kendall Graveman, another rapidly progressing prospect, is also being considered for a September callup, as is Sean Nolin, who made his big-league debut in an emergency start last year.

Anthony Gose, Ryan Goins and Dan Johnson, who’s been rehabbing a leg injury at Buffalo, are also expected to be among the Blue Jays’ additions as rosters expand to up to 40 men. Another new arrival will be John Mayberry Jr., acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night for minor-league infielder Gustavo Pierre. Mayberry, 30, gives the Blue Jays another right-handed option in the outfield, at first base and designated hitter with his career .856 OPS against left-handed pitchers. Essentially, the next month will be a free look at him for the Blue Jays, who will have two spots available in the outfield next year with Melky Cabrera and Colby Rasmus headed for free agency. Mayberry has two years of arbitration remaining and is earning $1.59 million this year.

Around The League
--The Houston Astros fired manager Bo Porter on Monday after a 59-79 record in his second season.

--The Brewers activate Matt Garza. For the first time since July 20, the Brewers wake up this morning with some company in first place. But now they’re getting a bit of a reinforcement: they’ve activated Matt Garza from the disabled list. Garza will return to the Brewers’ starting rotation on Wednesday against the Cubs. He missed about a month with a left oblique strain. Garza is 7-7 with a 3.58 ERA and a 104/43 K/BB ratio in 145 and two-thirds this season

--The Philadelphia Phillies traded outfielder John Mayberry Jr. to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league third baseman Gustavo Pierre. The trade was made before Sunday's midnight waiver trade deadline Mayberry, 30, batted .213 with six home runs and 21 RBI in 63 games (29 starts) for the Phillies this season and had recently been on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley for left wrist inflammation.

--St.

--The Cleveland Indians activated designated hitter Jason Giambi off the disabled list. The 43-year-old Giambi had been on the DL since June 12 with an inflamed knee. He also has missed time this season because of a broken rib and strained calf. In 47 at-bats this year, Giambi is hitting .128 with two home runs and five RBIs.

--With rosters eligible to be expanded up to 40 players as of Sept.

--LA teams lead World Series odds as majors head into final month. We are now in the final month of the Major League Baseball season and as teams make a final push towards the post season, it looks like the two teams from Los Angeles have the inside edge when it comes to winning the World Series this October. According to LV Superbook, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels are the favorites to win the Fall Classic, currently they are both listed at 4/1. The Washington Nationals have the next best odds in the National League at 5/1, while over in the American League it's the Baltimore Orioles at 6/1. Check out the complete list below.

•Incredible Stat of the Day
Los Angeles Dodgers Clayton Kershaw is 36-9 in his team starts against the money line (80.0%) versus National League teams scoring 4.3 or less runs per game in the second half of the season since 1997. Kershaw has also been on an incredible 16-0 run versus the National League East over the last three seasons. The Left-hander looks to become Major League Baseball's first 17-game winner by earning a fifth consecutive victory over the Nationals on Tuesday night to keep the National League West leaders from a fourth loss in five contests.

Game of the Day: Nationals vs. Dodgers

Washington Nationals at Los Angeles Dodgers (197, 6)

After turning Dodger Stadium into their own launching pad in the series opener, the Washington Nationals face a tougher test Tuesday against Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw. The Nationals have blasted 14 home runs over their last four games, including four in Monday’s 6-4 victory that pushed their lead over Atlanta in the National League East to seven games. Leadoff hitter Dee Gordon is mired in a 0-for-18 slump for Los Angeles, whose lead over San Francisco is down to two games.

Gordon isn’t the only player struggling for the Dodgers, who moved outfielder Yasiel Puig to sixth in the batting order Monday. Puig went 0-for-3 and has two hits in his last 30 at-bats for Los Angeles, who added an extra player to their crowded outfield Monday with the promotion of top prospect Joc Pederson from Triple-A Albuquerque. Washington center fielder Denard Span is hitless in five career at-bats against Kershaw, but enters the contest with three home runs in his last five games.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, MASN2 (Washington), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

LINE HISTORY: The Dodgers opened as -200 home favorites and now sits at -197. The total is currently at 6.0.

INJURY REPORT: Nationals: 3B Ryan Zimmerman - out (hamstring). Dodgers: N/A.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "The Nationals have actually pulled away in the NL East, while the Dodgers are now fighting to hold off the Giants in the NL West. This is a more important game for the Dodgers for that reason. They will have their ace on the mound tonight and Clayton Kershaw is having one of the best seasons in recent history for a starting pitcher with an incredible 1.73 ERA and 0.84 WHIP. He is well on his way to easily winning another Cy Young Award." - Steve Merril.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Doug Fister (12-5, 2.55 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (16-3, 1.73)

Fister suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season Wednesday as he allowed five runs (four earned) on a season-high 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings against Philadelphia. The former Fresno State star has yielded four home runs over his last two starts after allowing 11 in his first 18 outings. Fister, who is making his first career start against Los Angeles, owns a 2.15 ERA over the past three September/Octobers.

Kershaw has recorded at least 10 strikeouts in three consecutive starts, including Wednesday when he held Arizona to one unearned run over eight innings. The two-time Cy Young award winner has pitched at least seven innings and allowed three runs or fewer while striking out at least six batters in 13 consecutive starts. Kershaw is 6-2 with a 2.79 ERA in 10 career games (nine starts) against the Nationals, including seven shutout innings May 6.

TRENDS:

* Dodgers are 4-0 in Kershaw's last four starts versus the Nationals.
* Nationals are 6-20 in the last 26 meetings in Los Angeles.
* Under is 7-0 in Kershaw's last seven starts following five days of rest.
* Over is 5-0 in Fister's last five starts overall.

CONSENSUS: Almost 58 percent of the wagers are on the Dodgers at -197.

'Blue Birds'

Toronto Blue Jays off a horrendous 9-17 (-$1032) month of August platting 3.3 runs/game head to the 'HOUSE OF HORROS' called Tropicana Field for a clash with Tampa Bay. For some reason the Rays bring their best to this series having won 66-of-98 encounters since '2009 including an impressive 37-16 at Tropicana Field. Knuckler R.A. Dickey toes the rubber for Toronto bringing a 10-12 record, 4.00 ERA to the hill. Dickey trades pitches with Jeremy Hellickson who is 1-2 with a 2.98 ERA over eight starts this season. Tough spot for the knuckler and the Blue Birds. Jays have won just 2 of their last 11 road games and hit the field 4-10 away w/Dickey this season, 1-4 with the hurler at the Trop since his arrival in 2013. A final betting nuggets working against Toronto. The Blue Jays have struggled opening a series of late posting a 3-13 skid including 3-6 in enemy territory.

I love the match up here as Odrisamer Despaigne has been a real streaky pitcher and on the other side is Wade Miley who has been pretty consistent this season. We are seeing huge Sharp movement on this one as the public is 61% on the Padres yet this line has shifted the other way. We are going to follow the sharps with the D'Backs here straight.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Tuesday September 2, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews

I said that it was possible for either the Angels or A’s to sweep their four-game series over the weekend and take total control of the AL West race. I just didn’t think either team would sweep. Proves what I know. The Angels indeed did and now have a five-game lead in the division — big enough that Sportsbook.ag has taken down AL West futures. Alas, I could see the Halos know getting caught in a trap series — yes, there are trap series — to start this week in Houston. Here’s look at that matchup and four others on Tuesday’s schedule.

Angels at Astros (+180, 9)

If the Angels can keep their focus they could put the AL West to rest. Twelve of the Angels’ next 13 games are against the Astros, Twins and Rangers, while the A’s will have two series against the Mariners. Left-hander C.J. Wilson will try to keep the Angels from falling into a rut on Tuesday. Wilson (10-8, 4.46) has allowed three runs or fewer in four straight starts, three of which the Angels have won. However, Wilson has a 7.50 ERA in three starts this year against Houston. Chris Carter is 8-for-22 with two doubles and two homers off him in his career. He might be the August AL Player of the Month. Right-hander Brad Peacock (3-8, 5.13) has pitched eight innings against the Angels this season, allowing seven runs and 11 hits. Mike Trout is 3-for-8 off him with a double and triple. This will be Houston’s first game without Manager Bo Porter, who was fired on Monday.

Key trends: The Angels are 1-8 in Wilson’s past nine road starts. Houston is 0-4 in Peacock’s past four at home. The “over/under” has gone under in nine of the Angels’ past 10 vs. teams with a losing record.

Early lean: A manager firing often gets a team’s attention. Houston is good underdog value here.

Mariners at A’s (-147, 7)

Oakland finished August at 12-17, the team’s first losing month since May 2012. Everyone points to the Yoenis Cespedes/Jon Lester trade as why the A’s aren’t scoring much, but it’s like the whole team suddenly went into a slump at the plate. The A’s didn’t score for 29 straight innings in one stretch vs. L.A. I’m quite sure the trade for the White Sox’s Adam Dunn won’t fix that. Manager Bob Melvin said “They should be embarrassed” after the Angels series. Now the A’s are potentially staring at the one-game wild-card playoff where you might have to face someone like the Tigers’ Max Scherzer or Mariners’ Felix Hernandez. Oakland has to face someone with a better ERA than either of those guys Tuesday in lefty James Paxton (4-1, 1.83). In his brief career, Paxton has a 1.71 ERA , the lowest of any big-league pitcher in his first 11 starts since 1990. He has never faced Oakland. Sonny Gray (13-7, 3.03) gets the call for Oakland. He is 1-3 with a 5.06 ERA in his past five starts. Gray is 3-0 with a 0.87 ERA against Seattle this year.

Key trends: Seattle has won five straight on Tuesdays. The A’s are 4-1 in Gray’s past five at home against teams with a winning record. Oakland is 4-0 in Gray’s past four vs. Seattle.

Early lean: Under at -120.

Brewers at Cubs (+105, TBA)

Milwaukee thinks that outfielder Carlos Gomez will be back in the lineup Tuesday after he didn’t start Monday’s game at Wrigley Field due to a minor left wrist injury. He’s hitting .282 with 21 home runs and 65 RBIs on the year. Gomez is 2-for-7 with a home run in his career off Tuesday Cubs starter Jake Arrieta (7-5, 2.88). He was lit up last time out by the Reds for six runs in four innings. He last faced Milwaukee on Aug. 11, also at Wrigley, allowing two runs and five hits over 7.1 innings. Milwaukee’s Yovani Gallardo (8-7, 3.26) threw six shutout innings against the Padres in his last start. He also pitched on Aug. 11 vs. Arrieta, allowing a run over seven innings. Gallardo is 9-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 18 career starts against the Cubs.

Key trends: Milwaukee is 0-5 in Gallardo’s past five on Tuesday. The Cubs have won six straight on Tuesday. The Brewers are 5-0 in Gallardo’s past five in Chicago.

Early lean: Arrieta hasn’t had back-to-back lousy starts all year, so take the Cubs.

Red Sox at Yankees (-145, 8.5)

Don’t look for Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia to play at least until this weekend as he’s dealing with a concussion suffered on Saturday when he took a forearm to the head. Brock Holt likely will start all week at second. Pedroia is hitting .280 with seven home runs and 51 RBIs. The Sox start Joe Kelly (2-3, 4.14), who has never faced the Yankees. He may or may not have to face Jacoby Ellsbury. He was scheduled for an MRI on Monday. Ellsbury was only able to pinch-hit on Sunday due to an ankle problem. Shane Greene (4-1, 3.09) takes the mound for New York, and it has won his past five starts. His worst in that stretch was Aug. 2 at Boston when Greene allowed three runs over 4.2 innings. Mike Napoli hit a two-run dinger off him.

Key trends: The Sox are 5-2 in their past seven series openers. New York has lost four straight after an off day. The under is 6-2 in the past eight meetings at Yankee Stadium.

Early lean: Boston had to play Monday night in St. Petersburg and then travel out, while the Yanks were off. That plus no Pedroia is enough for me to lean New York.

Giants at Rockies (+138, 10)

Well, I certainly don’t pretend to get every single game right, and I was way off last week on the Giants when reliever Yusmeiro Petit (4-3, 3.44) got a spot start He held the Rockies to a run on four hits over six innings. During that outing Petit set a big-league record by retiring his 46th straight batter after putting down the first eight hitters in a row. Mark Buehrle held the previous mark with 45 straight in 2009 with the White Sox. That stat somewhat surprises me. Petit has pitched 15.1 innings against the Rockies overall this year and allowed three runs. Colorado’s Jordan Lyles (6-2, 4.08) was opposite Petit in his last start and allowed three runs over six innings. Gregor Blanco hit a two-run homer off him.

Key trends: The Giants are 6-1 in Petit’s past seven on the road. Colorado has lost six straight Tuesday games. The under has hit in 10 of the past 12 meetings in Colorado.

Early lean: Petit has won me over, and the Giants are rolling.

The Angels have now won 6 straight games and start their series tonight against the Houston Astros who they are 10-4 against this season. This Angels offense is deadly top to bottom and should have no problem putting up a big number against Brad Peacock and his 5.13 season ERA tonight.

WHITE SOX ML + WHITE SOX/TWINS – OVER 9 +342 *2*

Plenty of value here with the better pitcher and the better team in our opinion. The White Sox throw Noesi up against Tommy Milone. Noesi owns a 5.21 ERA over his past 3 starts – rough, but beautiful numbers compared to Milone’s 2.45 WHIP and 10.64 ERA. Milone has been dreadful allowing a combined 13 runs in his past 3 starts (11 innings). Chicago comes in having taken 2 of their past 3 games against a tough Tigers squad. The Twins have dropped 7 of their past 9 overall. Additionally over their past 10 games the White Sox have seen 8.7 per game while the Twins have seen 11.8.

GIANTS ML + GIANTS/ROCKIES – UNDER 10 +237 *2*

The Giants are one of the hottest teams in the MLB wining 7 straight. They have also won 4 straight vs the Rockies. Petit just broke the MLB record for consecutive batters retired and shut down the Rockies 5 days ago. The Rockies have not been the same since Tulo and Cargo went down. They haven’t been winning or scoring runs. They have lost 6 of their last 7 games and have not scored more than 2 runs in a game over their last 7. These teams have went under in their last 5 games including a 4-1 game 5 days ago with Petit and Lyles on the mound.

Game: New York Mets @ Miami Marlins
Time: Tuesday 09/02 7:10 PM Eastern
Pick: Miami Marlins-101 (moneyline)

The Miami Marlins have come a long way this season. In fact, they might even have been a true contender if they did not have Jose Fernandez go down early in the season, as he was a true ace at the top of the rotation. Despite the loss, Miami has stayed in the race for most of the season, and have played very well at home where they are seven games over .500. Jonathon Niese has not been on in his last two starts, yielding 5 runs on 17 hits covering 14 innings, and has a losing career record vs. Miami. The Mets are struggling of late on the road vs. a team with a winning home record at 2-6 in their last eight, and stand at 7-19 behind Neise when they scored 5+ in their previous game. The Marlins have been at their best at home vs. a left-hander, now 13-5 in their last 18. Take Miami at home in this one.

Kendrick/Minor There will be no playoffs for the Phillies this year, but jobs for next year are on the line in other cities for a core group of players that surely after another bad season are going to get split up. This team yesterday played an overall excellent team game and celebrated a group effort no hitter by this staff. The players were excited and for the first day of September they went back into the club house and there is no doubt they will play with passion to get out of the basement in their division by seasons end. The Braves bats have just not been hitting the ball well enough to justify them being a favorite this big. Take the Phillies.

N.Y. Mets @ MIAMI
N.Y. Mets -107 over MIAMI

Jonathan Niese is having another predictable season. He comes in with a 3.48 ERA, a 3.79 xERA and a BB/K split of 43/111 in 155 innings. Niese is a risk but his solid command, strong groundball tilt of 50% and consistent history presents potential reward. Truth is, this one has nothing to do with backing Niese and everything to do with fading Brad Penny.

For whatever reason, the Mets’ bats thrive against the Marlins. In fact, New York has scored 6, 9, 5, 7 and 11 runs respectively this season in their last five games against the Fish. The Mets figure to put up another crooked number here. Penny has made two starts this year. Prior to that, Penny had not started a game since 2011. He also has not registered a K rate over 5.8 K’s/9 since 2006. In 13 innings this season (2 starts, 2 relief appearances), Penny has a swing and miss rate of 3%. Over those 13 innings he has walked nine batters. His WHIP is 1.80, his ERA is 5.40 and his xERA is 5.90. Brad Penny is an “old 36” and he’s also out of shape. Penny’s chances of success here about the same as Pearl Jams’ chances of selling out a concert in Israel. Anytime we can fade Penny spotting a cheap price you can pencil us in and we make no exception here.

Milwaukee @ CHICAGO
CHICAGO +106 over Milwaukee

The Brewers cannot be favored on the road right now. Milwaukee has dropped six in a row on the road and has been outscored 42-13 over that span. What’s happening to the Brewers (choking) is not unique. They are in the midst of a heated pennant race for the first time in a long time and it’s a role they are not accustomed to. We saw a similar reaction by the Pirates a couple of years ago and we're seeing similar reactions from K.C. and Seattle this year. The Crew will now send out veteran Yovani Gallardo to try and snap this untimely funk. We don’t like his chances. After being a model of consistency throughout his career, things fell apart for Gallardo in 2013. He posted his first 4.00+ ERA while his strikeout total plummeted. Through 27 starts in 2014, Gallardo has a 3.26 ERA so it would appear on the surface that he’s returned to his old ways? Truth is, he has not. Gallardo's K rate, which was once his biggest strength, continues to plummet. His fading swing and miss rate doesn't give much hope for a rebound, either. In his last start, Gallardo walked three and struck out none. He has a BB/K split over his last 30 innings of 11/17. His xERA doesn't believe in the ERA rebound. Under the surface, Gallardo’s skill set has "4.00+ ERA" written all over it. He’s been greatly aided by an 77% strand rate and that strand % is even higher over his last six starts at 81%. Gallardo is a struggling pitcher that has been living off extreme good fortune over the last two months but with the roof caving in on the Brewers, his luck is likely going to take a turn for the worse. Avoid.

Jake Arietta is coming off a terrible performance where he allowed six earned runs in just four innings in a disaster start versus the Reds. He will look to rebound at home against the Brewers, who he faced on August 11 and allowed just five hits and two earned runs in 7.1 innings. Arietta’s August results look ugly, as he was 1-3 with a 5.34 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in five starts. An unlucky 57% strand rate really hurt him while the rest of his skills maintained at a high level (3.04 xERA, 50% groundball %, 8.6K’s/9, 3.6 BB. His home form has been tremendous, where he has a skills supported 1.86 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in 58 innings. Overall, Arietta has 135 K’s in 128 innings, a 50% groundball rate and a 1.05 WHIP. The Cubbies continue to play well and have now won 10 of their past 15 games. Milwaukee is wrongly being billed as the chalk here and we’re all over it.

Seattle @ OAKLAND
Seattle +130 over OAKLAND

The A’s snapped an ugly losing streak yesterday with a 6-1 victory in the opener of this series. Newcomer Adam Dunn provided a spark with a jack in his first AB to spark the A’s to a five-run first inning. That’s a nice story, it really is but the addition of Dunn was a desperation move by Billy Beane to ignite his offense. Dunn will DH primarily against righties, which unfortunately means he’s likely on the bench to start this one against lefty James Paxton. Mr. Three True Outcomes (walk, strikeout or HR) is nothing more than a rally killer and he’s batting cleanup. Last September, Dunn hit .159 in a hitter’s park. At O.co Coliseum, expect something closer to .059. If and when he gets in tonight, he’s more of a hindrance than a help. Take away the five runs that the A’s scored in the 1st inning last night and they have scored just two runs over their last 36 innings. Now this struggling lineup will have to face a pitcher that has some of the nastiest stuff you will ever see. Paxton's health issues have been well documented, as have his outstanding skills (career 1.71 ERA in 63.1 MLB innings). Paxton has a career BAA of .202 after allowing just 47 hits in those 63 innings. In fact, there's nothing new to add since the last few times we've written about Paxton. If he's healthy, he's likely to be brilliant and right now he says he feels great.

By contrast, Sonny Gray hasn’t been so great lately. You always have to be cautious with pitchers that are not accustomed to throwing this many innings. In his two years above A-ball in the minors, Gray threw just 48 innings in 2011 and 152 in 2012. Last year, he threw just 64 innings at this level. This season, Gray is already up to 178 innings and all the signs of fatigue are present. Over his last 32 innings, his walks are up (13) and his K rate is down (21). The A’s have lost three of the past four games that Gray has started and over that span he has posted an ERA of 5.06 to go along with an alarming 1.53 WHIP. Gray could rebound, as he has the skills but in the end, we see a fresh pitcher with brilliant stuff against a tiring one that is struggling. We also get to fade a team that is reeling and seeing golf balls at the dish. Seattle is struggling too right now but they still offer up tremendous value at this price with Paxton going.

Kevin's Pick(s):
Yesterday seemed like a sick joke as we went 0-4, with three of the four plays looking good late. The Mets blew a save and then gave up 3 in the 8th to lose, the Red Sox were a big underdog but lost in the bottom of the 10th, and the Royals were up 4-0 through 5 innings but gave up three runs to win but not cover the run line for us. I feel like those are the types of stories we've been seeing all year though.

San Diego Padres -117
at Pinnacle (http://www.pinnaclesports.com)

5* NL West Game of the Month on Padres -
The Padres are showing outstanding value as a small home favorite against division rival Arizona tonight. San Diego comes in having won 4 of their last 5, while the Diamondbacks have won just 4 of their last 14.
I look for the Padres to open up the series with a big win, as I believe they have a key edge on the mound. San Diego will start Odrisamer Despaigne, who has a dominant 2.25 ERA and 1.100 WHIP over 6 home starts. He faced off against the Diamondbacks earlier this season at home and held them to just 1 run on 5 hits over 6 2/3 innings. Arizona will counter with Wade Miley, who has really struggled against the Padres. Miley is 1-6 with a 4.96 ERA and 1.424 WHIP over 11 career starts versus San Diego.
Arizona is 4-17 in their last 21 games when listed as an underdog, 1-6 in Miley's last 7 starts against the NL West and 0-4 in his last 4 road starts against a team with a losing record. San Diego is 12-1 in their last 13 games when listed as a favorite, 8-0 in their last 8 home games against a team with a losing record and 20-6 in their last 26 home games overall.
Strong system backing the Padres in this one. Favorites with a money line of -125 to -175 who are a below average hitting team (AVG

LineCatchers

The Marlins took game 1 of this 3 game set against the Mets on Monday with a 9-6 victory in a game where the New York defense committed six errors. Tuesday’s Free Play is all about value and I believe this is on the road team, especially with the Line at (-108).

The Mets hand the baseball to lefty Jon Niese who is having yet another solid season in the New York rotation. The lefty has a 3.74 ERA in 14 road starts this year and has been on one the most consistent pitchers in the NL this campaign. In 25 trips to the mound this season, Niese has allowed 3 ER or fewer in 23 of those outings. Over his last 4 starts, Niese has an ERA of 3.33 whilst averaging 6 2/3 IP.

Brad Penny gets the nod for the Marlins and will make his third start of 2014 tonight. Penny has allowed 5 ER in 10 IP in 2 starts this year and has walked more batters than he has struck out (7BB / 6K). Opponents are hitting .278 against Penny in his combined 13 IP from starting and relief pitching.

The Mets have averaged over 5 runs per game against the Marlins this season and with Penny on the mound tonight, I like their chances to put enough runs on the board to get the W. Also worth noting is that Jon Niese has allowed just 3 ER in his last 15 IP against Miami.

Free MLB Play and Thoughts

952 ATL / 951 PHI – Over 7.5
Analysis: I know, Braves and over aren’t always in the same sentence, Larry. You guys know I hate Minor and his flyballs, and the Braves have hit Kendrick. One or both of these teams get most of the runs. I don’t have the time to elaborate, but the work’s been done and we’ll see if there are more or add thoughts later.

Here are my thoughts as of now.

It’s hard to pass up Niese at that price, and I’d have loved the under and still do, but don’t get the tick up there at all. Miami does fare better against LHP and does have the better pen, so I would have to agree w/Fish here.

Instinct also says the Cubs fare better against LHP especially at home, but the money is going the other way. At Wrigley with a good hitting pitcher like Gallrado, if they think the Brewers are the winners, I think it goes over.

Since the Cardinals have had trouble all season with LHP, at that price they’re begging for Wainright money but I would take the Pirates, or the RL, which is pricey but perhaps in a parlay.

Since Lyles CAN be a great ground ball pitcher, I could easily take the Rockies ML or RL, and at 10.5 I lean under.

I like Miley in the bigger park in San Diego.

Punt, pass and kick Kerhshaw. Obviously Fister/RL but almost looks to easy at this point. At this price perhaps Dodgers in a parlay. Maybe people are over thinking this one?
I have to lean to Carassco although the money is not. PERHAPS again people over thinking. Indians don’t lose EVERY game against LHP and probably have the better pen and the starter that might pitch deeper.

I like the Yankees over before it gets to 9, and it’s too easy to take NY so I lean Boston RL.
I would almost always, as many of you know, fade Dickey in a Dome where there is no wind to help, and that was actually my first lean last night.

Again, if we could get 8.5 in the Astros game I’d take the over, and since Houston has far more power against LHP’s I could make a good case for Houston RL here.

I don’t like Milone but in a bigger park I could make a reasonable case for the Twins. That is where the money is at this point.

With the total coming down in the Royals game, the sharp side is the Rangers RL, but that’s one that you’d have to take a deep breath to bet.

I like Paxton/Seattle. Oakland is almost appearing desperate and out of character trading for everyone, and now Dunn. Rarely does that work.

Boy, they really hate Latos. At that price I do not, not giving the Reds a DH and the fact that many of them saw Norris in the NL.

LAA's SP C.J. Wilson is coming from 3 quality starts in which he allowed 3, 1 & 1 ER's but his pheripals didn't improve at all: high pitch count numbers & poor K/BB ratios. In those 3 starts he couldn't reach the 7th IP and had a pedestrian 10/10 K/BB.

However, I feel that he faced some favorable matchups as suddenly the A's couldn't hit while the Red Sox offense has been struggling for a long time. This can't be said about this HOU lineup that is elite vs. LHP's this season - I have them ranked #3 in the league! This is a bad matchup for him…

On the other end, I expect the Angel's offense to produce some runs off B. Peacock. Like Wilson, Peacock faced OAK on his last start, and even though he managed to allow just 1 ER in 5.1 IP's of work note that he walked 5 (!) batters! I don't think that he will have such "luck" against this LAA potent lineup.

( Y. GALLARDO -R / J. ARRIETA -R )

The under is 16-6 in Barry’s last 24 home plate umpire appearances,
and 11-3 in the brewers last 14 as a road favorite. Gallardo been very
solid on the road with a 2.39 ERA and a 1.1 whip. Arrieta has been
solid, and did get beat up his last outing, but looking historically,
he tends to have great bounce back games. Each team average just over
3.5 runs per game since the ASB, and I expect at least one of these
pitchers to pitch somewhat lights out tonight, and the other not to
get more run support than average.

1.65 to win 1.5 units TOTAL UNDER 6½-110 (ARI D`BACKS vrs SDG PADRES)
( W. MILEY -L / O. DESPAIGNE -R )

The D-backs and the Padres are 1-6 O/U in their last seven meetings,
and those games have averaged just south of 5.5 runs per game. Wade
Miley is pitching excellent, with his last 4 starts going under the
total. He is also flexing an ERA of just 1.83. He has faced the padres
four time over the past couple of seasons, and been 0-3-1 O/U.
Despaigne has been pitching well at home, with a 2.25 ERA, and even
better at night, sporting a 1.96 ERA and a 1-5 O/U mark. Behind the
plate is Doug Eddings, who in National league games, has gone 1-9-1
O/U and in San Diego games he is 1-5 o/u the last 6, and in d-backs
games, he is 1-4. His overall runs per game come in just over 5.5
making this a great 1.5u play for us tonight
