See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities
By JASON LOGAN

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Lookahead spot

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are off to a 2-0 start and dreams of SEC grandeur are starting to creep in. The Bulldogs have their first taste of SEC competition in Week 4, making the trip to Death Valley to play the LSU Tigers. But before MSU tests its conference might, it travels to little ole South Alabama as a 14.5-point favorite in Week 3.

The Bulldogs rolled over Southern Mississippi but found themselves up against it versus UAB last weekend. Mississippi State was actually out-gained 548-516 by the Blazers, and can’t afford to look past the jacked-up Jaguars – and to LSU - this weekend.

South Alabama, which defeated Kent State 23-13 as a 2-point favorite in Week 1, enjoyed a bye week last Saturday and has been preparing for MSU since the ink dried on the schedule. Hell, there’s a billboard on Interstate-65 outside of Mobile simply stating “It’s Here, Sept. 13, 2014.” Oddsmakers opened MSU as 15.5-point road chalk but that has since been trimmed to 14.5, with that pesky half-point hook standing strong.

Letdown spot

The USC Trojans jumped into the national title conversion with a hard-fought 13-10 victory as 3-point road underdogs at Stanford in Week 2, going from 20/1 to 12/1 to win the college football championship. The Trojans’ emotions are running high after Andre Heidari’s field goal gave USC the edge late in the fourth quarter.

Southern Cal will have to bottle that excitement during a cross-country plane ride, traveling all the way to the East Coast for a date with Boston College Saturday. The Eagles are getting a lofty 17.5 points from the oddsmakers, but a look at the early line moves could give USC backers reason for concern. Books opened Southern Cal as big as a 19.5-point road favorite but have cut that spread down two points as of Tuesday, with early action expecting the Trojans to come out flat.

“I think it’s natural for that to be a concern,” USC head coach Steve Sarkisian told the Orange County Register of a possible letdown in Boston. “As I’ve said all along, whether it’s a rival or not, a conference opponent or not, the way we prepare is what is critical. That shouldn’t change based on the opponent. That being said, I’m still learning this football team.”

Note: USC will be without senior starting LB and team captain Hayes Pullard for the first half Saturday due to suspension.

Schedule spot

Another team making a long road trip this weekend is the Arizona Cardinals. They’re traveling to New Jersey for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff – 10 a.m. in Arizona – with the New York Giants on a short week, coming off a 18-17 win over San Diego (failed to cover -3) on Monday Night Football.

Arizona will not only deal with the long flight and time change but the early forecast is calling for un-desert like conditions in the Meadowlands Sunday. There’s a low pressure system projected to hit the East Coast this weekend and it brings wind and rain with it. The Cardinals are also 0-3 ATS in their last three contests coming off a Monday nighter.

The Giants need all the help they can get. New York’s new offense sputtered versus Detroit in Week 1, with Eli Manning throwing for just 163 yards and two interceptions Monday. Books opened the Giants as 3-point favorites but that spread is stinking like a stone. As of Tuesday afternoon, New York can be had as low as -1 and will be an underdog by the time Sunday rolls around.

Preview: Astros (64-80) at Mariners (78-65)

Game: 3
Venue: Safeco Field
Date: September 10, 2014 10:10 PM EDT

The Seattle Mariners failed to keep pace in the wild-card race after getting shut down by the Houston Astros last time out.

They'll try to quickly regroup Wednesday night as these AL West rivals wrap up a three-game set in Seattle.

The Mariners (79-65) took Monday's opener 4-1 before falling 2-1 the following day, their second one-run defeat in three games. Logan Morrison provided all the offense with a game-tying homer in the eighth inning before Yoervis Medina gave the lead back in the ninth.

Seattle fell one-half game back of the AL's second wild-card spot.

"I like where we're at," Morrison told MLB's official website. "It's a tough loss, but shoot, that's why we play 162."

Houston's Jonathan Villar delivered a two-out tiebreaking single and Collin McHugh combined with reliever Josh Fields on a two-hitter. The Astros (64-81) have won seven of nine behind a 2.04 ERA.

"They have the confidence and they know they can win, and when you can have that, you come out ahead a lot of times," interim manager Tom Lawless said. "It's somebody different every night contributing something to the W, and that's really important for a team."

Houston's victory was just its third over an 11-game stretch against the Mariners.

Hisashi Iwakuma (14-6, 2.97 ERA) takes the ball for Seattle looking to win a sixth consecutive decision. However, the right-hander hasn't been very sharp of late, posting a 7.24 ERA in his last three starts.

Iwakuma gave up three runs and seven hits over 5 1-3 innings to win 7-5 at Texas on Friday.

"I felt good in general," he said after throwing just 84 pitches. "I thought I had good arm action, I thought my pitches were working. It was a tight strike zone but I thought I did well overall."

Iwakuma is 4-0 with a 2.31 ERA over a five-start stretch against division foes. He's also gone 5-1 in his last six home starts while striking out 37 and walking one over 42 1-3 innings.

Iwakuma threw six innings of one-run ball to win 13-2 at Houston on July 1, improving to 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA in his last six appearances in the series. Jose Altuve is 8 for 19 in their matchups, but Chris Carter and Jason Castro are a combined 7 for 38 with 13 strikeouts.

Altuve is hitless in seven at_bats over the last two days and 2 for his last 17 in the series. Carter has hit safely in eight straight overall, going 11 for 28 with three homers and seven RBIs.

Nick Tropeano will be called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City for his big league debut as Houston goes to a six-man rotation. The right-hander went 9-5 with a 3.03 ERA over 23 minor league games - 20 starts - while striking out 120 over 124 2-3 innings.

"It's a great experience," general manager Jeff Luhnow said. "He pitched a full year, so he doesn't need a lot of innings. We need to be careful not to overuse him. We do want to see how he performs against big league hitting. It's an exciting opportunity for him, and it gives our guys a little bit of a breather."

Mariners outfielder Dustin Ackley, mired in a 1-for-19 slump, is expected to miss a fourth consecutive game with an injured left ankle.

Seattle has dropped four of its last six at home.

Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox September 10, 01:35 EST

When the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox complete their three game series Wednesday afternoon an 'Under' play looks to be the right choice. The 'Under' has paid dividends in 6-of-8 meetings between the two AL East rivals. When Orioles are favorites of -$1.10 to -$1.50 with lefty Wei-Yin Chen on the mound the 'Under' has been a profitable 17-4-1. Another positive for 'Under' gamblers, Red Sox are 27-16-2 'Under' this campaign vs a left-handed starter.

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals September 9, 04:05 EST

Washington backers have good reason to believe Nationals sweep the current series and finally pick up a victory vs Braves with Stephen Strasburg on the hill. The Nats are 0-3 this season vs Braves w/Strasburg but with Aaron Harang the scheduled starter for the visitors, Nats are overdue for a win. Nationals have loved home cooking for the last month or so, compiling a record of 14-3 before the home audience and Strasburg is off back-2-back quality starts. Harang heads to the mound winless the past three with a whopping 7.38 ERA and has just 1 victory the past ten on the hill with Braves 1-9 over the span.

Game of the Day: Braves at Nationals

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals (-180, 7)

Stephen Strasburg has spent the past six weeks re-establishing himself as one of the National League’s top pitchers, and the Washington Nationals’ right-hander looks for his fourth consecutive victory Wednesday as the NL East leaders host the Atlanta Braves. Strasburg has allowed one or zero runs in six of his past eight outings, helping propel Washington’s second-half surge. The Nationals have taken the first two games of the series from Atlanta and lead the Braves by nine games in the East.

Atlanta’s hopes of repeating as division champions have all but evaporated, as the Braves have dropped seven of 10 and sit 1 ½ games behind Pittsburgh for the NL's second wild card. Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman has three homers in 22 career at-bats against Strasburg, and is 29-for-59 against Washington pitching this season. Justin Upton hit a two-run blast in Tuesday’s 6-4 loss, his first homer and first two RBIs this month after blasting seven homers with 28 RBIs in August.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Aaron Harang (10-10, 3.87 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (11-10, 3.43)

Harang gave the Braves an outstanding first four months, but has struggled mightily since mid-August while going 1-4 with a 6.91 ERA and a .350 opponents batting average in his past five stars. The 36-year-old lasted just 3 2/3 innings Friday at Miami, giving up six runs on 10 hits. Harang, who gave up one run on seven hits over seven innings against Washington on Aug. 9, is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts against the Nationals in 2014.

Strasburg gave up seven runs in five innings to the Braves on Aug. 8 and five runs to San Francisco in four innings on Aug. 24, but has allowed only four earned runs in the other 42 2/3 innings pitched since July 29. He got a no-decision Friday against Philadelphia despite giving up one run on four hits in six innings, and sports a 0.92 WHIP in his past eight outings. Strasburg, who leads the NL with 215 strikeouts, is 3-6 with a 4.62 ERA lifetime against Atlanta.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-0 in Strasburg's last four starts vs. Braves.
* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
* Under is 4-0 in umpire Marty Foster's last four games behind home plate.
* Braves are 1-9 in Harang's last 10 starts.

CONSENSUS: According to Consensus, 61.91 percent of wagers are backing the Nationals.

Hump day card led by the MLB Total Of the Week backed with a Powerful League Wide totals system that averages over 12 runs. Top N.L. Play cashed out on Tuesday. Free MLB Play below.

On Wednesday the free MLB Play is on the Under in the Arizona at San Francisco game. Rotation numbers 963/964 at 10:15 eastern. Arizona has struggled at the plate of late averaging just 2.6 runs the past week. They have played under in 10 of 12 games as a road dog from +150 to +175. This game also fits a nice league wide system that has gone under in 16 of 20 games for home favorites at -140 or higher with a total that is 8 or less if they are off a home favored win at -140 or higher and scored 5 or more runs on 10 or more hits with no errors and are playing an opponent like Arizona that lost as a road dog and scored 2 or less runs and had 4 or less hits. Arizona has Collmenter pitching and he has been solid of late with a 0.83 era in his last 3 starts. In his last 2 starts vs the Giants he has allowed 2 runs in 10 innings. Vogelsong for San Francisco has pitched under in 10 of 14 starts and has a solid 2.97 home era. So based on the system and angles we will back the one to stay under the total. On Hump day we bring the bang in bases and the lead play is the MLB Total Of The Week from an amazing totals system that averages 12 runs. Last night we nailed the MLB Top play. Tonight get on the "Giving End" Hump day. For the free play take the Diamondbacks and Giants to play under the posted total. GC

MLB Game: Kansas City Royals @ Detroit Tigers
Time: Wednesday 09/10 7:05 PM Eastern
Pick: Kansas City +102 (moneyline)

The Detroit Tigers have gotten a lot more mileage out of Ricky Porcello than they ever imagined. Porcello, now in his sixth season with the Tigers has recorded a career high 15 wins. That comes with a lot of innings and his 183 innings on the season are also a career high, and you have to wonder how much is left in the tank. The Tigers are just 4-8 in his last 12 starts after going 12-4 in his first 16 on the season. James Shields is 13-7 on the season and has pitched his best over his last 12 starts where he has allowed more than 3 runs in just one of them. The Royals have hung with the Tigers all season, and a win tonight will even the teams up for the stretch drive. The Royals are playing better baseball than almost everyone right now at 31-14 in their last 45 games, and are 11-1 in their last 12 on the road behind Shields. The Royals get the call here.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Samardzija struggling

Here’s a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league games:

Strong Stretch for Away Faves

Away favorites are enjoying a good stretch, having gone 21-11 SU over the past seven days. That includes a 3-2 SU mark in Tuesday’s games, with the Baltimore Orioles (-127), Los Angeles Angels (-144) and Oakland Athletics (-191) all prevailing away from home.

Strasburg Sensational at Home

Washington ace Stephen Strasburg looks to continue his hot home track record Wednesday as he leads the Nationals (-185, 7) against the Atlanta Braves. Strasburg is 8-2 with a 2.60 ERA in 16 starts in Washington this season, with an 11-4-1 O/U mark over that span.

Peavy Providing Value

San Francisco Giants right-hander Jake Peavy is on his hottest stretch of the season entering Thursday’s home tilt with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Peavy is 4-1 over his last five starts while allowing just four earned runs over that span; he ranked last in the majors in value with the Giants before the hot run.

Pitching Notes

* Oakland right-hander Jeff Samardzija is struggling as he leads the Athletics (-191, 8.5) into a Wednesday showdown with the host Chicago White Sox. Samardzija is 1-4 SU over his last five starts and sits a lowly 136th in value (-$18) since being acquired from the Chicago Cubs.

* Cleveland Indians ace Corey Kluber continues to be one of the league’s strongest second-half Under plays entering Thursday’s encounter with the visiting Minnesota Twins. Kluber is 2-8 O/U in 10 starts the all-star break, a stretch that includes a 4-1 loss to the Twins on Aug. 21.

Hitting Notes

* Washington Nationals outfielder Adam LaRoche is the hottest hitter in the majors over the past week. The 34-year-old is batting a sizzling .474 with four home runs, 12 RBIs and a 1.647 OPS over the past seven days; the Nationals are 4-2 SU and 3-3 O/U over that stretch.

* St. Louis outfielder Jon Jay has dominated his career matchup with Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto entering Thursday’s game between the Cardinals and the host Reds. Jay is batting 12-for-23 lifetime versus Cueto, with a double, three home runs, seven RBIs and just two strikeouts.

Totals Streak

Seattle Mariners (0-4 O/U): The Mariners are back in a familiar position after putting together a stretch in which it recorded four consecutive totals of six or under, going 2-2 SU over that span. The Mariners are now the strongest Under bet in the AL for the season, going 57-80-7 O/U.

Prop of the Day

Bettors should consider taking a chance on the New York Yankees’ -1.5 run line (+170) against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Members of the New York lineup are hitting a robust .353 with three home runs in 34 at-bats against Tampa Bay right-hander Jake Odorizzi.

Injury Notes.

* New York Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka may pitch for the team again this season despite being on the shelf with a partially torn UCL. Tanaka is 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA, a 13-5 SU mark and a 9-9 O/U record in 18 starts in his rookie season.

* Seattle Mariners outfielder Dustin Ackley is expected to miss at least a couple of games with bone spurs in his left ankle. Ackley is mired in a 1-for-19 slump that has dropped his average to .251; the Mariners haven’t missed a beat over that span, going 4-1 SU and 3-2 O/U.

Weather Watch

* Fans at Progressive Field will be treated to wind blowing out to centre field at 16 mph for Wednesday’s game between the host Indians (-152, 8) and the Twins. Teams averaged 9.91 runs and 2.36 homers in 11 games under similar conditions in 2013 – well above the stadium averages.

Umpire Note of the Day

Under is 36-15-1 in umpire Hunter Wendelstedt’s last 52 Wednesday games behind home plate. Wendelstedt will call the balls and strikes as the Toronto Blue Jays (-173, 8) welcome the Chicago Cubs in their interleague finale.

3* Plays

Angels -1.5 -115 **Hard to lay the juice with a run line play here but this game really should get out of hand early especially with Shoemaker on the mound who our system rates as one of the better pitchers in the league.** We also like the under again but just as a lean**

Pirates -1.5 +120 **Worley takes the mound against Williams tonight in Philadelphia. Our system shows us that this game us a complete mismatch especially with our trend: Pirates as a favorite off a one run loss outscore opponents 5.6 to 2.8 runs per game the next game.**

2* Plays

Cardinals -129 ** Lackey takes the mound against Simon who is one of our system's most overrated pitchers. The Cardinals do excellent off a 4+ run loss when they were a favorite in that contest and are a favorite in the next contest. They are 14-6 and are outscoring teams by almost 2 runs per game.**

1* Plays

Brewers -125 **Great trend - Marlins away dog after scoring 3+ runs and 10+ hits are 2-10 SU since 2013**

Yankees -115 **Great trend - Yankees are 23-12 SU at home as a favorite with a total of less than 8 after having 5+ hits in the previous contest**

Leans

Angels/Rangers under 9.5

Marlins/Brewers Under 8.5
