Colts host Eagles on MNF

Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) at Indianapolis Colts (0-1)

Line and Total: Indianapolis -3, Total: 54

The Colts attempt to avoid an 0-2 start when they host the Eagles on Monday night.

Philadelphia got into trouble in Week 1 with a 17-0 deficit to the 9.5-point underdog Jaguars, but came out a completely different team in the second half, scoring 34 straight points to win 34-17. The club cannot afford to fall behind by that much against Indianapolis, which is a way more talented offense than the Jaguars, so zero points in the second half for Andrew Luck and company is rather unrealistic.

The Colts trailed the Broncos 31-10 early in the fourth quarter of their season opener, but cut the lead to 31-24 with just over three minutes remaining. Luck threw for 370 yards with two touchdowns in the game, but was not able to bring his team back to tie it.

Indy would be wise to ground-and-pound a little against the Eagles, as slowing the game down could disrupt Chip Kelly’s up-tempo offense.

Since 1992, the Colts are 4-2 SU and 5-1 ATS (2-1 SU and ATS on road) versus the Eagles. Indianapolis is also 10-0 ATS in the past three seasons at home where the Total is at least 45.5 points. However, the Eagles are 21-14 ATS (60%) on Monday night since 1992.

On the injury front, Indianapolis lost LB Robert Mathis (Achilles) for the season, and might be without four other key defensive players on Monday who are all questionable -- LB Jerrell Freeman (hamstring), CB Greg Toler (ribs), DE Arthur Jones (shoulder) and DB Sergio Brown (shoulder). The Eagles placed a couple of offensive linemen on IR this week (OT Allen Barbre and G Evan Mathis), but there are no other significant injuries to their squad.

The Eagles pressed the snooze button early on against the Jaguars, but finally awakened in the second half. QB Nick Foles was a disaster early on with an interception and two lost fumbles in the first half, but he found his groove early in the third. Foles finished the game with 322 passing yards and two touchdowns, and should have success against a beatable Colts secondary that allowed 6.92 yards per pass attempt last year (21st in NFL).

Last season's rushing champ, RB LeSean McCoy, had 21 carries for only 74 yards (3.5 YPC) against the Jaguars, but did catch six passes for 41 yards in the passing game. New teammate RB Darren Sproles rushed for 71 yards on 11 carries (6.5 YPC) with a touchdown in the game, and also caught four passes for 14 yards. These two backs will see a lot of action against the Colts, whose rushing defense is prone to giving up big plays.

Philly's run defense was excellent versus the Jaguars, allowing only 64 yards on 25 carries (2.6 YPC). Where the Eagles will need to improve is their defense against the pass. They allowed Chad Henne to throw for 266 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions in their opener, and Andrew Luck is a far superior quarterback that Henne is, and he will make them pay if they don’t improve their coverage.

QB Andrew Luck did everything he could to bring his Colts team back into the game against Denver in Week 1, but the comeback fell just short. The good news is that Luck was able to make a ton of plays in the passing game and also rushed for 19 yards and a touchdown on five attempts. He should have no problem lighting up a far inferior Eagles secondary. WR Reggie Wayne caught nine passes for 98 yards in his first game since undergoing surgery on a torn ACL. He should be able to repeat his success against Philadelphia’s defense.

One area that must improve is the rushing offense. The Colts are a team that likes to pound the ball, but RB Trent Richardson rushed for only 20 yards on six carries against the Broncos. Indianapolis will need to establish the rush early, so that it can slow down the Eagles offense and prevent Luck from carrying too much of a load for his team.

The Colts defense allowed only 102 yards on 32 carries (3.2 YPC) against the Broncos, and if they can do the same against LeSean McCoy and the Eagles then they should be in good shape. Covering the middle of the field will be crucial, because Nick Foles likes to go right at the opposing safeties with deep passes.

MNF - Eagles at Colts
By Kevin Rogers

The Eagles play their second straight interconference game to start the season, as Philadelphia hopes to duplicate its second half against Jacksonville and not repeat its first half effort that put them in a 17-0 hole. Indianapolis hopes to finish a possible comeback on Monday night, not to fall behind by 24 points like it did at Denver last Sunday night, as the Colts try to get into the win column.

Both the Eagles and Colts showcase terrific young quarterbacks fresh off playoff appearances last season, as Andrew Luck has been tremendous off a loss in his short career. Coming off last Sunday’s 31-24 defeat to the Broncos as eight-point underdogs, the Colts enter Monday’s action with a perfect 10-0 straight-up and against the spread record since 2012 off a loss. In this span, Indianapolis has knocked off San Francisco, Denver, and Green Bay in this situation, while the Colts have won five of their past seven games against NFC opponents.

The first half was pretty forgettable for the Colts at Sports Authority Field in Week 1, as Peyton Manning burned his former team for three touchdowns in the second quarter to give the Broncos a commanding 24-0 lead. Indianapolis scored a late first half touchdown to cut the deficit to 24-7 at halftime, but couldn’t convert on a fourth-and-goal in the opening minutes of the third quarter to get within 10 points. The Colts limited the Broncos to just seven points in the second half, as Indianapolis’ comeback ultimately came up short in the seven-point setback.

Philadelphia entered the season opener as the largest favorite on the board, laying 10 points against Jacksonville. The Jaguars put a scare into the Eagles by jumping out to a 17-0 advantage at halftime, but Philadelphia scored two quick touchdowns in the third quarter to trim the lead down to three heading into the fourth quarter. Jacksonville backers still felt good with eight minutes remaining in regulation and the game tied at 17-17, as Nick Foles hit Jeremy Maclin on a 67-yard touchdown strike to give the Eagles the lead for good. A late defensive touchdown by the Eagles gave Chip Kelly’s team the fortunate cover in a 34-17 triumph, while the 34 points in the second half also cashed the ‘over’ of 49.

The last time the Eagles and Colts hooked up in 2010, Manning and Michael Vick were the quarterbacks at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia held off Indianapolis, 26-24, but the Colts cashed as 3 ½-point road underdogs thanks to a late touchdown run in the final two minutes of regulation. The Eagles are making their first trip to Lucas Oil Stadium, as Philadelphia lost in its previous stop to Indianapolis at the RCA Dome in 2006 by a 45-21 count.

Last season, Philadelphia put together a 6-2 record on the highway, but somehow allowed a whopping 100 points in the two losses at Denver and Minnesota. The Eagles struggled against AFC foes in Kelly’s first season, losing three of four interconference contests with the lone victory coming at Oakland, a 49-20 rout of the Raiders in which Foles tossed seven touchdown passes to officially nail down the job as Philadelphia’s starting quarterback.

The Colts have dominated at home since Luck became the starting quarterback in 2012, winning 14 of 17 games at Lucas Oil Stadium. This is the first home Monday night contest for Indianapolis since 2010, as the Colts lost their only Monday game last season at San Diego, 19-9. The Eagles have split their last six games on Monday night since 2009, as all three of those victories coincidentally came at Washington, including last season’s season opening victory.

Indianapolis opened as three-point home favorites and that number has stayed pretty steady for most of the week. The total is set between 54 and 54 ½ at most books, as the Eagles went 4-1 to the ‘over’ in five road games last season with totals listed above 50. The game kicks off at 8:35 PM EST and can be seen nationally on ESPN.

Blue Jays prime fade material in series openers
Andrew Avery

The Toronto Blue Jays are struggling in series openers, slumping to a 2-10 record in their previous 12 series-opening games.

The Jays dropped eight-straight series opening games before going 2-2 in their previous four openers. That eight-game streak started with a 9-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at Rogers Centre back on Aug. 5.

Oriole Park at Camden Yards will be the site for their next series with the opener coming Monday.

Oddsmakers have the O's as -125 home faves as they will send Wei-Yin Chen to the mound. The Jays will counter with youngster Marcus Stroman.

Preview: Mariners (79-67) at Angels (92-55)

Game: 1
Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Date: September 15, 2014 10:05 PM EDT

Don't tell Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia that his team has the luxury of a 10-game division lead.

For the Seattle Mariners, luxury is a word that is certainly not in their vocabulary.

The Angels will become the first team in baseball to clinch a playoff spot if they win Monday night in the opener of a four-game home set.

Los Angeles (93-56) failed to record its first 11-game win streak in 50 years with Sunday's 6-1 home defeat to Houston. The Angels' AL West advantage over Oakland was cut to 10 games with their magic number to win the division remaining at four, but Scioscia took no solace in that.

"No one's using the word 'luxury' around here," said the manager, whose team last reached the playoffs in 2009. "We were out there trying to win every game."

Seattle (80-68) is 12 1/2 games behind Los Angeles in third place and will be eliminated from division title contention with a loss Monday. The Mariners are more worried about the wild-card standings, sitting 2 1/2 games behind the Athletics and one behind Kansas City.

Manager Lloyd McClendon's club capped a 2-4 homestand with Sunday's 4-0 loss to Oakland, dropping two of three to one of the teams it is chasing. The Mariners have won eight of their last 10 on the road ahead of this 11-game trip.

'We haven't been good. The good part is we are going on the road where we have been real good,' McClendon said. 'You want to talk about improbable, that's about as improbable as you get.'

Something may have to give Monday in an enticing matchup of terrific right-handers.

The Angels have won seven straight starts by Matt Shoemaker (15-4, 3.16 ERA) while the Mariners' Hisashi Iwakuma (14-7, 3.11) is 5-0 with a 1.75 ERA in seven career starts against Los Angeles.

Shoemaker set a franchise record for wins by a rookie Wednesday by allowing one run in 6 2-3 innings of an 8-1 rout at Texas, improving to 6-0 with a 1.32 ERA in his sizzling seven-start stretch.

"I think Shoe is one of the big reasons why we're even contending," Scioscia said. "When he got his chance to get in the rotation, to do what he did is spectacular for us."

Shoemaker captured his lone start against the Mariners, giving up three runs over 5 1-3 innings in a 7-5 win May 29.

Pitchers may want to talk to Iwakuma about his astounding success against Mike Trout, who is 4 for 22 off him for his worst average (.182) versus anyone he has at least 15 at_bats against.

Albert Pujols is 3 for 22 off Iwakuma and has one hit in his last 14 at_bats.

Iwakuma went 5-0 with a 3.06 ERA in six outings before surrendering four runs in 4 1-3 innings in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to Houston.

Howie Kendrick is 7 for 19 off Iwakuma and is wielding a hot bat. The second baseman went 22 for 44 with seven extra-base hits - two homers - and 14 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak that was snapped Sunday when he went 0 for 2.

Seattle's Dustin Ackley is expected to return to the lineup after missing two games with a sore left foot.

'Runs at a premium'

The Opening matchup of a three game series is today’s baseball betting focus as Baltimore hosts Toronto this evening at Camden Yards. Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen will toe the rubber for the O's, bringing a 15-4 record, 3.59 ERA to the hill. After a shaky end to August posting a 4.34 ERA in his final three starts the hurler has got off to a solid September holding opponents to one run in 13 innings across two starts. Chen has faced Jays twice in his career losing both contests the most recent this past August giving up 4 runs over 5.0 innings in a 5-1 Baltimore loss. Chen will be matching pitches with Toronto’s right-hander Marcus Stroman, who has a 10-5 record, 3.61 ERA for the year and has won three straight starts while allowing just four runs over 22 2/3 innings of work. This will mark the rookies' first start against Orioles. The view from here is that with two hurler in dominating presence runs will be at a premium making 'Under' the best betting option. The 'Under' has been the correct choice when O's host a team with a winning record (9-19-2 O/U) and when Jays visit a team with a winning record (11-17-1 O/U). The fact that this game is the series opener is another positive for 'Under' gamblers, since the 'Under' is 15-8-1 in O's home series-opener's this season. The kicker, 'Under' has been the right play in 6-of-7 meetings at Camden Yards this season.

Luck, Colts Look To Get On Track Versus Eagles In High Scoring MNF Showdown

A slow start cost the Indianapolis Colts a chance to open the year with a win against Peyton Manning and the defending AFC champion Denver Broncos in week one. Now they will look to get on track against another playoff team from a year ago that completed a big comeback win of week one. Andrew Luck and the Colts will host Nick Foles and the Philadelphia Eagles in a battle of high-scoring offenses. Indianapolis is favored by three points and with so much firepower between these teams this could very easily come down to a shootout on Monday Night Football.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Indianapolis Colts
Monday September 15, 2014 - 8:30 PM ET
Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana

NFL Betting line: Indianapolis -3

The Eagles came back from a 17-points halftime deficit to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars and save a lot of people their survivor pool pick. Avoiding turnovers is something Philadelphia did well a year ago but struggled with in its opener and that will be a point of emphasis for Chip Kelly’s team in week two.

NFL Betting Preview: Philadelphia Eagles

Foles had two fumbles and an interception in the first 20 minutes of the game against Jacksonville, nearly matching the four turnovers he had all of last season. It took Mark Sanchez warming up on the sideline for Foles to regain his composure and he finished strong with 183 passing yards and two touchdowns as he led the Eagles’ comeback. The tandem of LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles will be key again as they look to keep the pressure off of Foles in the pocket while moving the football. The Philadelphia defense was exposed to big plays against Chad Henne and an average Jaguars’ offense last week and they will have a tough time slowing down Luck and the Colts.

NFL Betting Preview: Indianapolis Colts

Luck took some time to get going as well in week one but he ended up throwing for 370 yards and two touchdowns as Indianapolis came back to at least cover as a road underdog versus Manning and the Broncos. The Colts have three excellent receivers in TY Hilton, Reggie Wayne, and Hakeem Nicks and all three will see plenty of touches this week as the ground game continues to struggle with Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw failing to provide many big plays in week one. The Indianapolis defense rallied to hold Manning and the Broncos to a single second-half touchdown a week ago and will hope to carry over the momentum from that finish.

NFL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

Both of these offenses should put up plenty of points in week two but it’s the Colts that bring the better defense and home advantage in to this contest. Indianapolis can’t afford to fall to 0-2 with a loss at home so look for Luck and the Colts to put up some big numbers on this suspect Philadelphia defense while their own defense does just enough for them to cover.

NFL Betting Pick: Indianapolis Colts -3

3* (279) Philadelphia Eagles +3

There is a lot of love for Andrew Luck and the Colts in this Monday night match up. Maybe due to the struggles of the Eagles to put Jacksonville away in week one parlayed with the late charge that the Colts made in Denver last week. I'm not sold on this Colts team. Their defense is below average and this still don't have a running game to complement Andrew Luck and the passing game. The Eagles can run the ball and should be able to keep this Colts defense guessing all night long. This is also the second of back to back primetime games for Indianapolis. Teams playing in the second of back to back primetime games (Sunday night and Monday night only) are just are 1-17 against the spread in the last eighteen games. Take the points.

Philadelphia (+3) 27 INDIANAPOLIS 26

Jacksonville supporters must have been feeling pretty good at halftime last week as Jacksonville held a commanding and very much surprising 17-0 lead against the Eagles in Philadelphia. In what was truly a tale of two halves, the Eagles woke up in the third quarter and put up 34 unanswered points in the second half, coasting to the eventual 17 point win and cover as a 10 point favorite. After giving up two early touchdown passes in the first quarter, the Eagles defense played well, holding the Jags to 306 total yards at just 4.3 yppl for the game. Eagles quarterback Nick Foles struggled to start the game but settled down in the second half and led the charge for the Eagles with two touchdown passes of his own. Meanwhile, the Colts didn’t start the season the way they would have liked, facing a 0-24 deficit before rallying late to come up just short, losing 24-31. Indianapolis ended up outgaining the Broncos 408-364, driven by a strong passing performance from Colt QB Andrew Luck.

The Colts will be focused to play well at home on the national stage on Monday night knowing that a loss drops them to 0-2 on the season, but the Eagles will present some unique challenges. Philadelphia’s offense spreads the field and creates space better than any other offense in the league and the Colts will need all hands on deck to slow it down. Unfortunately for Indianapolis, it looks like LB Jerrell Freeman and DT Art Jones are banged up this week and 2013 sack leader Robert Mathis is now out for the season with a torn Achilles. Mathis’ presence will be missed as Erik Walden has no burst and Bjoern Werner is a work in progress. The key players on this defense are now the cornerbacks, who will have to play well as the Colts get creative in generating a pass rush. Meanwhile, stopping the Eagles high speed run game will be a challenge. The Eagles were my #1 rated rush team in 2013 and picked up where they left off in the opener against the Jaguars, gaining 145 yards at 4.5 ypr. However, the Colts will have the benefit of playing against an Eagles offensive line that has been shuffled recently with injuries and suspensions creating a very different lineup.

The Colts are always dangerous off a loss and Andrew Luck has yet to lose consecutive regular-season games in his NFL career. He's 10-0 in games following a loss. However, Chip Kelly has faced Luck three times in college, winning two. Luck’s numbers against Kelly’s defenses are 69-of-107 (64.5%) for 848 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions. There are situations that go both ways in this one and my ratings see this game as even. Based on the numbers, I’ll lean with the Eagles plus the points.

(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 3.70 units)

Kyle's Pick(s)

2 UNIT = Detroit Tigers @ Minnesota Twins - TIGERS -1.5 (-110)
Listed Pitchers: Scherzer vs. Swarzak
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.82 units)
The only loss I have had this month was in extra innings by a run. It has been profitable, but we still have the regular season to wrap up, and then the playoffs. It is important that the money keeps coming as we look to turn in plus money on the diamond in 2014.
It is an important time of the year for the Detroit Tigers as well. They are going toe-to-toe with the Royals in what is setting up to be a dramatic finish in the AL Central. All the Twins can do is watch, as they are way out of the picture in the division. They haven't been very motivated lately to show up and play, as they are losers of 8 out of their last 10 games. They snapped a four game skid with a win over the White Sox yesterday. Today a stiffer test awaits with Max Scherzer. Scherzer is looking for a massive paycheck in the offseason, probably not with the Tigers. With an ERA of 3.19 he is a good pitcher, but I imagine no where near what a team will pay him in the offseason. Nevertheless, I like Scherzer to shut down a rather lifeless Twins' offense. He is fresh off a big 13-4 win over the Twins in Minnesota, allowing them to score 3 runs. His ERA in his last three games hasn't been great, 3.72, but note he allowed 5 runs three starts ago and bounced back nicely in his last two, giving up 2 and 1 runs. The Tigers will go up against a pitcher that is making only his second start of the season. Swarzak is traditionally a member of the bullpen for the Twins, but will see action as the starter tonight. The longest he's gone all year is 4 innings, don't expect him to go longer than that. We should be able to get the Tigers vs. the Twins' bullpen for the majority of this game. This is the kind of game Detroit just has to go for the jugular and leave no doubt who the better team is. I expect the Tigers to pull away with the division, and pull away from the Twins in this game. Take the Tigers on the -1.5 RL.

The Eagles got off to a shaky start last Sunday against the Jaguars and had to rally in the second half to take down Jacksonville in Philly. In my view, the most significant factors to come from that game was that the Eagles lost two starting offensive linemen, including Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis. With the offensive system that Chip Kelly has implemented in Philly, these lineman are a vital part of the fast paced tempo he has deployed.

Indianapolis also dug themselves a big hole in their opener, falling behind by 24 points before a rally came up short against Denver in Colorado. The Colts have been lights out on their home turf, winning 14 of 17 games at Lucas Oil Stadium with Andrew Luck under centre. In the Luck / Pagano era, the Colts are 10-0 ATS following a defeat.

The Colts are a team that likes to pound the ball, but RB Trent Richardson rushed for only 20 yards on six carries against the Broncos in their season opener. Indianapolis will need to establish the run early, so that it can slow down the Eagles offense and give Andrew Luck the option to mix up the play calls at the line of scrimmage.

The Eagles struggled against AFC opponents in 2013, going 1-3 in four inter conference match ups with the lone victory coming at Oakland. I still believe their are concerns over the Eagles secondary which allowed an NFL high 290 Passing Yards per game and they have done very little to address that in the off season.

3* Plays

Seattle and LAA Under 7.5 **This pick may not surprise many as we have two very dominate pitchers on the mound tonight but really love the pitching duo tonight and runs should be at a premium. Shoemaker is very underrated and should have quite a bit of success.**

San Fransisco and Arizona Under 8 **Vogelsong vs Miley doesn't look like a sexy pick tonight especially with this total in the desert but our system points to a very low scoring game. We don't see this game getting over 6**

NYY +109 **This is more of a pick against Colome than anything else. He has looked good in his one start this season but our system tells us not to put too much stock in that outing. Capuano is tough to back tonight especially since he just struggled against the Rays but we really think he will bounce back in a big way tonight in Tampa.

2* Colts -3

The Colts return home after being beaten by the Broncos on opening weekend, but they don't have much to hold their heads down for. Actually BOTH the Eagles and Colts had some furious comebacks last week. But we have to tend to think the Colts comeback was more impressive against the Broncos. That being said, the Colts just need to come out and build on the momentum from last week. They can't keep digging themselves holes and if they don't...they're a really good football team. This game to me comes down to the better QB and home-field advantage tonight. It SHOULD be a close game, but the Colts should win. Lucas Oil Stadium is loud and the fans are really excited for the Colts this season. And we can't back the Eagles on the road just yet for a couple reasons. First of all, they were lucky to beat the lowly Jags. Secondly, and more importantly, I'm fully expecting a sophomore slump from Foles this season, and if/when he turns the ball over tonight, the Colts will make him pay. Colts take this one on national TV.

CHICAGO CUBS +105
(Wood/Simon)

The Reds are not going to make the postseason this year mainly because of their bullpen and road play. The Cubs are awful on the road which is why their record is so bad, but at home they are a decent team for the talent they lack. Neither starter has been pitching well at all so the bullpen edge does go to the Cubs. It’s tough for the Reds to play out the rest of this month knowing there is no playoff push for them this season. For the Cubs it’s just another Monday at Wrigley. Take Chicago

MLB early-week betting cheat sheet: Stroman a strong Under play

Here’s a comprehensive look at betting notes for the early-week major-league games:

Away Faves Dominate

Sunday was a strong day for away favorites, which went 4-1 SU; The L.A. Dodgers (-173), Washington (-164), Oakland (-154) and Miami (-110) all prevailed. That continues a strong stretch for road faves, which are 17-11 SU over the past seven days overall.

Push Party

The New York Mets (-137, 6.5) host the Miami Marlins on Monday in the opener of a three-game set. The Mets lead the majors with 18 pushes on the season, while the Marlins finished with a league-best 17 a season ago and ranks fifth in the league with 11 so far this season.

Big Over vs. Big Under

The San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies represent a contract in totals as they do battle Tuesday night at Petco Park. The Padres enter the week as the league’s strongest Under play at 55-88-5, while the Phillies are tied with the Marlins for the most Overs in the NL at 77.

Pitching Notes

* Look for another strong outing from Toronto Blue Jays rookie Marcus Stroman as he prepares to face the host Baltimore Orioles (-120, 7.5). Stroman is 2-7-1 O/U over his last 10 starts - thanks to a 3.23 ERA over that span - and has allowed just six home runs in 114 2/3 innings.

* San Francisco right-hander Jake Peavy will attempt to keep his hot streak going Tuesday as he faces off against the host Arizona Diamondbacks. Peavy is 5-1 SU and 2-4 O/U over his last six starts while surrendering just five total runs over that span.

Hitting Notes

* Miami outfielder Marcell Ozuna has picked up the slack in the absence of major-league home-run leader Giancarlo Stanton. Ozuna enters Monday’s showdown with the Mets batting .370 with four home runs, six RBIs and an .815 slugging percentage over the past seven days.

* Washington outfielder Jayson Werth may have his hands full Tuesday as he and the Nationals square off against right-hander Aaron Harang and the Atlanta Braves. Werth has just three hits in 25 career at-bats versus Harang while striking out 11 times.

Totals Streak

Boston Red Sox (4-1 O/U): It’s rare for an AL East team to find itself on an Over streak - three of the five clubs have fewer than 65 Overs for the year - but the Red Sox are on a run thanks to an offense that has averaged five runs over a five-game span. Boston is 64-82-4 O/U for the year.

Prop of the Day

Bettors should take a look at a first-inning run being scored Monday between the Giants and visiting Diamondbacks (-110). San Francisco leads the majors with a .293 first-inning batting average, while the Diamondbacks are close behind in fourth (.275).

Injury Notes

* Oakland Athletics catcher Stephen Vogt likely won’t return from ankle injury until later this week at the earliest. The Athletics have struggled during Vogt’s absence, going 4-6 SU, 2-8 O/U and -503 units over that span.

* New York Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran took batting practice without issue Sunday and may return to the lineup Monday. Beltran has missed the last five games with bone spurs in his right elbow; in 38 games missed this season, the Yankees are 18-20 Su, 14-24 O/U and -394 units.

Weather Watch

* Wind at Wrigley Field will blow in from left field at 12 mph for Monday’s encounter between the host Cubs (+104, 7) and the Cincinnati Reds. Teams combined to hit a paltry 0.88 home runs in eight games under similar conditions a season ago - well below the stadium average of 2.16.

** Odds, stats, weather forecast and probable pitchers as of 11:45 a.m. ET Monday.

VegasButcher - Washington Nationals -135

The Braves are coming off a 2-7 road trip and their chances for the playoffs are becoming slimmer and slimmer by the day. Today they’ll take on a Washington team that is 6-2 in their last 8 games and will have their stud Strasburg on the mound. Let’s ignore the actual stats and take a look at SIERA’s of both Strasburg and Santana against their respective opponent tonight:

Strasburg: 4.0 (04/05) / 2.0 (06/20) / 2.2 (08/08) / 1.6 (09/10)
Santana: 1.6 (06/22) / 4.6 (08/08) / 5.1 (09/09)

Based on SIERA, Strasburg didn’t pitch well against the Braves early in the year (04/05) but he’s been spectacular since, holding this 24th ranked lineup to an average SIERA of 1.9 in the last 3 starts. By comparison, Santana was stellar in his first meeting with Washington (06/22) but has been horrible in the other two later in the year, averaging a SIERA of 4.9. It’s not a surprise as the ‘unfamiliarity’ wore off as the season went on and the Nats have been excellent against both the fastball and slider, which are Santana’s two primary pitches. I’ll back the better team in this one with a strong advantage in starting pitching tonight.

UNDER 53 POINTS
Philadelphia at Indianapolis

A TD with 13 seconds remaining in yesterday’s Houston-Oakland game cost us a free play winner on the under in that game, but we’ll bounce back tonight with another play on the under.

The untold story heading into tonight’s game is that these two offensive coaching staffs are very familiar with each other. Indy offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton was with Andrew Luck at Stanford and has helped his defense this week in preparing for Chip Kelly’s offense, which he saw at Oregon every year. On the flip side, Kelly has seen Andrew Luck before plenty of times when they were both on the college level. Bottom line: This will be a slower paced game than everyone expects. Despite the reputation of playing in high-paced, high-scoring games, the Colts have gone under in 10 of their last 15 games as a favorite and in 15 of their last 22 games on this field. More than 80% of the action at the offshore sportsbooks we monitor is on the over tonight, so we’ll gladly play the contrary side and go under.

Monday 9/15 NFL Service Plays

What a rough day it was yesterday in the NFL. So many upsets and so many big injuries that happened. Just a strange day overall. We had everything looking good going into the later games as we thought there was no way the Denver/Kansas City game goes UNDER 42 and no way San Francisco loses their home opener against a beat up Bears team... Well the worse possible scenario happened and we lost on all 4 of our teasers and made us go from a nice winning day to a losing day. We did hit our 5* Dallas Play easily which ended up being our only win of the day. Tonight we feel really good about the Colts and just see this as a bad spot for the Eagles. Colts on the other hand are coming off a loss and coming back to play in front of their home crowd on Monday night football. Love the home team here.
