Game of the Day: Utah at Oregon State

Utah Utes at Oregon State Beavers (+2.5, 52.5)

Utah quarterback Kendal Thompson is expected to make his first start Thursday when the Utes visit Oregon State, which won last season’s meeting 51-48 in overtime. Thompson, who transferred in the offseason from Oklahoma, replaced an inefficient Travis Wilson and rushed for 83 yards to spark No. 23 Utah’s 30-28 upset of UCLA on Oct. 4. Utes coach Kyle Whittingham hasn’t named a starter for Thursday, but all signs point to Thompson getting the nod.

After opening Pac-12 play with a 35-10 loss at USC, Oregon State bounced back from a with a 36-31 victory at Colorado on Oct. 4. Beavers senior quarterback Sean Mannion threw five touchdowns in last year’s win over Utah, but brings a 5-to-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio into this season’s matchup. While Mannion and his young receiving corps has struggled throughout the first half of the season, Oregon State ranks second in the Pac-12 in total defense at 331.4 yards allowed per game.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1.

LINE HISTORY: Utah opened as 2-point road favorites and were bet as high as -3, before settling at -2.5. The total opened at 52 and is now up to 52.5.

INJURY REPORT: Oregon State - OL Garrett Weinreich (questionable Thursday, knee). Utah - N/A.

WEATHER REPORT: It will be mostly cloudy at kickoff with seven mile per hour wind blowing towards the northwest endzone. There will be a slight nine percent chance of rain.

COVERS POWER RANKINGS: Utah (-10.5) - Oregon State (-4) + home field (-3) = Oregon State +3.5

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "We opened Utah as a 1.5 point favorite on the road on Sunday and quickly went to -2 as we took a sharp bet at the 1.5 number. On Monday we went up to Utah -3 but by the end of the day we settled on Utah -2.5 were we currently sit with 64 percent of the action. We opened the total 54.5 yesterday and saw a flood of public money come in on the under pushing us to 53.5 this morning we adjusted to 53 then to 51.5 where we had some sharp money come in on the over at that number forcing us back up to 53 with 59% of the action now on the over." - Michael Stewart of Carbonsports.ag

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "Pac-12 rivals Utah and Oregon State will meet in Corvallis on Thursday night. Both teams are 4-1, and both are well rested coming off a bye. The Utes though have climbed into the rankings after upsetting UCLA in Pasadena. The Beavers will likely have their hands full trying to stop Utah's power running game." - Covers Expert Jesse Schule.

ABOUT UTAH (4-1, 4-1 ATS, 2-3 O/U): Running back Devontae Booker had 156 yards on 33 carries against UCLA and could post similar numbers against an Oregon State front seven that is missing two injured starters. The Utes’ defense leads the nation in sacks (5.6 per game) and tackles for loss (10.2 per game), and defensive end Nate Orchard ranks first in the country with 8.5 sacks. The Utes boast one of the top special teams units in the country, led by kicker Andy Phillips and kick returner Kaelin Clay, who leads the Pac-12 in punt return average (23.1).

ABOUT OREGON STATE (4-1, 2-3 ATS, 2-3 O/U): Terron Ward provided a boost for the Beavers’ offense with 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns against Colorado, but Mannion has struggled at times while waiting for receivers such as Victor Bolden and Richard Mullaney to become consistent downfield threats. The Beavers rank second in the league in passing efficiency defense, led by linebackers Michael Doctor, D.J. Alexander and Jabral Johnson. Kicker Trevor Romaine has been on a tear since missing the first two games, going 8-for-8 on extra points and 4-for-4 on field goals, including a 47-yarder.

TRENDS:

* Oregon State is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Utah is 4-0 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
* Under is 7-1 in Utah's last eight games versus a team with a winning record.
* Under is 5-1 in Oregon State's last six home games.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Just under 52 percent of wagers are backing Utah at -2.5.

Thursday Night Football: Jets at Patriots

New York Jets at New England Patriots (-10, 44)

Looking like a team whose time had passed just a couple of weeks ago, the New England Patriots are back atop the AFC East and preparing to face an opponent they have dominated in recent years. The Patriots aim to pad their division lead when they host the New York Jets on Thursday. New England has won six of the past seven meetings, but New York claimed a 30-27 overtime win in last season's second showdown.

The Patriots were all but counted out after a 41-14 drubbing by the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night in Week 4, but they've claimed two straight impressive victories, including a 37-22 win at Buffalo on Sunday to move to the top of the standings. While the Jets have lost five straight since a 19-14 win over Oakland in Week 1, they gave defending AFC champion Denver a scare before falling 31-17 on Sunday. The Patriots have won 32 straight home games against AFC opponents, the longest streak since the NFL merger in 1970.

TV: 8:25 p.m. ET, CBS.

LINE HISTORY: After opening at Patriots -9.5, the line has since shifted to -10 where it sits currently. The toal opened as 45, but has sinced dropped a point to 44.

INJURY REPORT: Jets - WR David Nelson (Ques-Ankle) Patriots - DL Dominique Easley (Ques-Shoulder), CB Brandon Browner (Ques-Ankle), LB Dont'a Hightower (Ques-Knee)

WEATHER REPORT: Rain is suppose to be hitting Gillette Stadium hard from Wednesday night straight through till kickoff. Rain is supposed to open up right around kickoff and dropping 15 mm of rain. Winds are expected to be blowing between five and six mph.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: The Patriots made it two straight wins to take over first place in the AFC East and now start a three-game homestand. The Pats are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games after scoring more than 30 points. New York has failed to cover a single game this season after getting frontdoored last Sunday. The road team has covered 4 of last 5 in the series with New England.

ABOUT THE JETS (1-5 SU, 0-5-1 ATS, 3-3 O/U): New York ranks 30th in the league in total offense (303.3 yards per game) and last in passing (182.2) but coach Rex Ryan insists he is committed to second-year quarterback Geno Smith. Smith has thrown seven interceptions — at least one in every game — and has completed only 57.1 percent of his passes, so the Jets have leaned heavily on running backs Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson to power the offense. The Jets rank sixth in the league in total defense but 25th in scoring defense, largely because of unfavorable field position thanks to 12 giveaways.

ABOUT THE PATRIOTS (4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS, 4-2 O/U): After a disastrous game against the Chiefs, Tom Brady and the Patriots' offense have come back to life the past two games, though the loss of running back Stevan Ridley is a big one. Shane Vereen becomes the featured back with Ridley out, but Brady might have to go to the air more often. The Patriots lead the NFL with a plus-9 turnover margin in large part because of an AFC-best seven interceptions and will try to force Smith into the type of poor decisions he is prone to make.

TRENDS:

*Jets are 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss.
*Over is 14-3 in Patriots last 17 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
*Over is 5-1-1 in the last 7 meetings in New England.
*Underdog is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.

COVERS CONSENSUS: 57.48 percent of Covers users are backing the Patriots -10, with 64.14 percent taking the over.

Giants beat Cards, one win from Series

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Buster Posey and the Giants already know how to win in October - even without all this help from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Even without home runs, or even hits.

Posey drove in three runs and San Francisco took advantage of some clunky defense by first baseman Matt Adams, beating the Cardinals 6-4 on Wednesday night to move within one victory of the World Series.

Chasing their third title in five years, the Giants lead the best-of-seven NL Championship Series 3-1 after poor throws cost the Cardinals yet again.

October ace Madison Bumgarner can pitch San Francisco to another pennant Thursday at home in Game 5. Struggling All-Star Adam Wainwright starts for St. Louis, now facing the same daunting deficit the Giants overcame to beat the Cardinals in the 2012 NLCS.

Kansas City awaits the winner after completing its ALCS sweep of Baltimore earlier in the day. The wild-card Royals will host Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night.

San Francisco climbed out of an early three-run hole, and back-to-back bad throws by Adams in the sixth inning helped the Giants rally - one night after a wild toss by St. Louis reliever Randy Choate allowed the winning run to score in the 10th inning.

''I think any time you can put pressure on the defense, you've got the opportunity for good things to happen,'' Posey said. ''We're able to come up with some big two-out RBIs to get back in the game.''

Minus injured catcher Yadier Molina again, the Cardinals were clinging to a 4-3 lead when San Francisco put runners at second and third in the sixth. Playing in with one out, the lumbering Adams backhanded Gregor Blanco's bouncer and stumbled as he tried to set himself to throw home.

Adams had trouble with the transfer, and his toss short-hopped catcher Tony Cruz as Juan Perez slid across with the tying run.

Joe Panik then hit a grounder right to Adams, who stepped on first base before firing wildly to second in trying for a double play. Brandon Crawford stopped about halfway between third and home, yet was able to score easily when Adams threw wide of the bag.

Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta came way off the base to catch the ball, but had no play at the plate.

''The play at home, there's a fast runner at third and I was going in on the ball and threw on the run,'' Adams said. ''Just should've made the throw, though. The second one, I should've just touched first and checked home.''

Posey added an RBI single off Seth Maness to make it 6-4. The star catcher also had a sacrifice fly in the first and a run-scoring single in the third.

These wild-card Giants joke about not needing hits and home runs to win, and they're showing that with timely bunts, small ball and a few miscues from the opponent. The tying and go-ahead runs came home on balls that didn't leave the infield.

Yusmeiro Petit pitched three scoreless innings to win in relief of an ineffective Ryan Vogelsong. Petit has been a valuable long man - he delivered six shutout innings in an 18-inning NLDS victory at Washington.

''He's been really good for us for a long time and he's finally getting some recognition. What a weapon to have,'' Posey said.

Sergio Romo worked the eighth and Santiago Casilla finished for his second save of the series.

A total of six Giants relievers held St. Louis scoreless over the final six innings.

Marco Gonzales took the loss after issuing a leadoff walk to pinch-hitter Perez in the sixth and giving up a single to Crawford.

''A lot of these innings are set up with good at_bats early in innings,'' Giants outfielder Hunter Pence said.

The Giants haven't homered in six games since Brandon Belt connected in the 18th inning at Washington, but it hasn't mattered much.

Cardinals rookie Kolten Wong showed off more postseason power, but his solo homer was wasted.

Vogelsong was the only pitcher in major league history to yield no more than one run in his first five postseason starts, but his streak ended when he gave up four in three innings. San Francisco has still won all six of the postseason games he has started.

SANDOVAL'S STREAK

Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval has reached base in 22 straight postseason games dating to Game 4 of the 2012 NLDS on Oct. 12, 2012. That breaks Barry Bonds' franchise record set from 2002-03. Bonds threw out the ceremonial first pitch Wednesday.

UP NEXT

Cardinals: Wainwright believes he has worked out some kinks in his delivery that have kept him from getting out of the fifth in his first two playoff starts this year. He has allowed eight earned runs and 17 hits in nine innings. ''I just don't want to get a bad rap for not being a good playoff pitcher,'' Wainwright said. ''That's the time I want to shine the most.''

Giants: Bumgarner gave up four hits over 7 2-3 innings for a 3-0 win in Game 1. He pitched a four-hitter in San Francisco's 8-0 wild-card win at Pittsburgh before taking the loss in Game 3 of the NLDS against Washington.

EZ's Plays For Today

I'm not playing anything on Wednesday or the Thurday night NFL game between the Jets and the Patriots. My Thursday night college football selection in posted below along with three big plays for Saturday. I sent out the Notre Dame play before the game was taken off the board. Best of luck.

-EZ

THURSDAY

3* (306) Pittsburgh Panthers -1.5

Virginia Tech's starting quarterback Michael Brewer has already thrown eleven interceptions and just can't be trusted on the road. Pitt has some issues with their sophomore quarterback as well but the do have a ball hawking defense and an edge at running back with James Conner. Conner is a big 250 pound bruising running back that has already rushed for over 800 yards on the season. The Panthers should be able to control the clock with the running game and force a turnover or two to pick up the home win. Play on Pittsburgh.

SATURDAY

5* (340) Arkansas Razorbacks +4

Georgia is coming off of a huge shutout win over Missouri last week in their first game without their suspended star running back Todd Gurley. The players dedicated the game to Gurley and as teams often do in their first game without their star they rose to the occasion in a big way. Freshmen running back Nick Chubb rushed for 143 yards and the Bulldogs defense forced Missouri into five turnovers. Now the Bulldogs must take to the road for the second straight week as a more then a field goal favorite against an ever improving Arkansas team. The Hogs are 0-3 in SEC play, but in their last two games lost in overtime against A&M and by one point to Alabama. The Arkansas defense held ‘Bama to just ten first downs. Hogs quarterback Brandon Allen is also playing well to compliment

5* (400) Northwestern Wildcats +7

This is a big revenge game for Northwestern who lost to these Huskers last season in Nebraska on a Hail Mary. If the Wildcat defense can do a decent job on Husker running back Ameer Abdullah, which I expect them to do, Northwestern will have a chance at the upset. Nebraska will want to try to establish the run, but their offensive line is still an area of concern. Last week the Wildcat defense held Minnesota running back David Cobb to under 100 yards for the game. Coming into that game Cobb was averaging over 144 yards per game and I expect Northwestern's defense to have another strong effort in this game. I like Northwestern to get it done in their homecoming game. Take the points.

5* (403) Notre Dame Fighting Irish +13.5

The Irish looked past an offensively talented North Carolina team last week with this game against #1 ranked Florida State on tap. I took the generous points last week with the Tar Heels as I faded the Irish in the look ahead spot, but I will back Notre Dame in this game. The Irish have been money in these games as they are 10-4 in their last fourteen games against top ten teams including 4-0 against the spread as a visiting dog since 2012. There are more Jameis Winston distractions this week as FSU investigates his autograph signings so I wanted to jump on this early just in case he sits for this game. Even with Winston in the game, the Irish offense can score enough points to win this game straight up. The FSU defense is allowing 21 points and 359 yards per game and this will be the best offense that they have faced all year. Take the points.

Analysis:
2** Play on: OVER THE TOTAL
*Optimum OU line: 44 or less points

We’re well aware that there could be bad weather in the Thursday night game between the PATRIOTS and JETS. In fact, the chance of rain is 100%… with possible thunderstorms as well. Winds won’t be a factor however, with a forecast of just 5-6 mile per hour. The OU line in this game has been adjusted as a result of that weather forecast…. as it opened at 47 points, and has gone down as low as 44 points. So we’ll look to STILL play on this OVER… and sharp Totals Players will get on board when the line ‘bottoms out’. It might just be at the current number of 44.5 to 45 points, given there public’s tendency to slam Overs on game day. So for now, our optimum OU line in this one is 44.5 or less points. And we’re PLAYIN it… rain or shine.

THURSDAY’s have been a GREAT Day of the Week for NFL games to be significantly higher-scoring than anticipated. In the last four weeks, Thursday games have seen 61 pts… 52 pts… 59 pts… and 70 pts. Until an opposite OU pattern starts to show, we’re compelled to still go with the flow. Especially knowing that:

*THURSDAY games in the NFL with an OU line of 52 < points have gone 16-2 O/U In the last three seasons in Game Five ore greater…
*THURSDAY big home favorites of -7 > pts (PATRIOTS) have gone 5-0 O/U in the last two seasons in the OU line range of 44 to 56 points…
*THURSDAY games with an OU line of < 49 points when BOTH teams come into the game off an ‘Over' in their last game (PATS + JETS).
*THURSDAY teams playing the first of 3 STRAIGHT home games (PATRIOTS) have gone 8-1 O/U...

At last look, the host Patriots were laying a whopping 9.5 to 10 points in this game… 6-0 /U last 3 years: All DIVISION home favorites of -9 > pts playing off a SUATS win (NEW ENG) when the OU line is < 48 points.

New England’s offense has really picked up their game as of late. The Patriots averaged only 20.0 ppg in their first four games. But in their last two, they’ve scored 43 and 37 points… 7-0 O/U since 2009: All GAME 14 or less home favorites of > 3 points AFTER scoring 37 > points in EACH of their last two games (NEW ENG).

On the flip side, the Jets’ defense hasn’t scared anyone. After starting the season by allowing 14 points to the Oakland Raiders, the Jets have allowed 31… 27… 24… 31… and 31 points in their last five games…. 7-1 O/U last 2 years: All road teams who allowed 31 > points in EACH of their last two games (NEW YORK).

Last week, the Jets lost at home to Denver by a score of 31 to 17… 10-2 O/U last 5 years: All division road teams off a SU non-division home loss of 14 > points that also went Over the Total (NEW YORK).

So the Jets are on a 5-game losing streak…. 9-1 O/U last 2+ seasons: All Game 12 or less road underdogs off 5 or more SU losses in a row (JETS).

10-1 O/U since 1991: All GAME 10 or less division road underdogs of < 13 points off BB SU losses of 14 > pts EACH (JETS) versus any opponent off a SU win (PATS).

Adding fuel to the fire is the series history between these two teams. The last NINE meetings between the JETS and PATRIOTS have gone 8-1 O/U… with an averaged combined point total of 49.6…

7-1 O/U last 4 years: All AFC EAST division games in which the host is favored by 7 > pts (PATS) and the OU line is > 43 points...

Kevin's Pick(s):
The Royals wrapped up the ALCS with a sweep yesterday afternoon to stay undefeated in the postseason, while the Giants went up 3-1 in the NLCS and have a chance to win it infront of their home crowd tonight. No system pick from me but Kyle looks for another winner.
Kyle's Pick(s)
2 UNIT = St. Louis Cardinals @ San Francisco Giants - UNDER 6.5 RUNS (-115)
Listed Pitchers: Wainwright vs. Bumgarner
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.74 units)
Entertaining couple of games yesterday, with the Royals clinching their first trip to the World Series since 1985. Then in the night game the Giants came from behind to win to take a 3-1 series heading into today. The Giants look to join the Royals and pop some champagne bottles behind Bumgarner in this critical matchup.
This is a duplicate pitching matchup of game 1 in this series. Madison Bumgarner was completely locked in then, holding the Cardinals down to 4 hits and no runs scored. In fact, Bumgarner has been locked in all postseason, he enters tonight with an ERA of 0.76 coupled with a 0.72 WHIP. The Cards have had plenty of issues hitting left-handed pitching, hitting only .164 against in their last 5 starts. Bumgarner is a big reason for that number, and all indications are that he is going to rip through them once again. Adam Wainwright will look for some redemption after getting credited for 2 runs against in the last game. In a playoff setting, yeah, 2 runs against for Wainwright is too much. From a pitcher of his level you expect something like Bumgarner has been doing. But still, other than that one start against the Dodgers, allowing 6, Wainwright has allowed only 4 runs in five of his last six games. I am expecting another low scoring contest, with Wainwright and Bumgarner dueling in San Francisco. In my opinion I think you can flip a coin on the winner of this game, but on the total I see a winner on the UNDER 6.5.
Cheers,
Kevin

Big scheduling edge here for the Canadians since they get to take on the Bruins off of a game last night in Detroit that did not start until 8:00. Also the Bruins just have not been able to score much this season. Look for a spirited effort from Montreal here in a big rivalry game against a Boston team that they have beaten 10 of the last 15 times they have met. Thank you and good luck.

New England Patriots -9.5

The Jets are a complete mess on offense right now with horrible QB play and pretty much worse WR play. Coach Bill loves nothing more than to stick it to Coach Ryan so look for the Patriots to get a lead and keep pushing the pedal to the metal to get a big divisional win here.

3* NYJETS / PATRIOTS UNDER THE TOTAL.

Reason: A rivalry game and the Jets and Rex Ryan always play well defensively against the Patriots. But this Jets offense is a joke at 1-5. New York put a lot of emotion on Sunday at home against the Broncos to try and end a 4-game skid but couldn’t, losing 31-17. They have a strong run defense and can pressure the passer, and the Pats offensive line has been a problem. They are piling up injuries on the offensive line, as well, a tough game Sunday against Buffalo. The new England defense, though, is exceptional with new CB Derrel Revis and the Jets will get only field goals while the Pats will go with a safe game plan on offense. Play the NY Jets/Patriots Under the total.

Giants (MLB)

There’s really not much more I can say about Bumgarner than what he’s already “said” about himself with his recent play. He’s thrown 23.2 innings in the postseason so far, allowed only 14 hits, 0 HR’s, 2 ER’s (0.76 ERA), and has 23 K to only 3 BB’s in this span. And that’s pitching @ PIT, vs WSN, and @ STL, on the road twice, and facing strong lineups each time. Like discussed the last few days, STL offense is much weaker without Molina in the lineup, and Pierzynski just adds another left-handed bat to the order, which is even worse against BumG. His 1.4 FIP against lefties ranks 2nd in the league, only behind Chris Sale’s 1.0. I’m sure we’ll see Cruz for the full game behind the plate today, only because he’s right-handed. At the same time I would also not be scared of BumG’s 4.0 ERA at home this year. A big factor here is an inflated .336 BABIP at home, as his 26% K-rate, 0.7 HR/9 rate, and 2.8/2.9 FIP/xFIP are all much stronger than they were on the road this season. These are elite numbers at home, and indicate that BumG has pitched more like a 2.8 FIP pitcher at home than a 4.0 ERA one. I trust the advanced stats in this scenario.

In any case, the bigger factor in this game is Wainwright. In his 2 post-season starts he’s allowed 17 hits, 8 ER’s (8.0 ERA), and a HR in 9 innings of work. He has 7 K but the 4 BB’s issued is a major red flag, given the fact that he rarely walks anyone at all. Last start vs. the Giants at home, Wainwright lasted 4.2 innings and threw 98 pitches. Prior to that he lasted 4.1 innings against LAD and threw 102 pitches. That’s as inefficient as it gets. Did you know that over the last two years, and including post-season, Wainwright has thrown 508 innings, the MOST out of any starter in the National League? Do you also remember that this is the guy that is 3 years removed from Tommy John Surgery? Reports indicate that it has been months now that Wainwright has been pitching with “tendinitis and discomfort around his right elbow” which is a big ‘Oh Oh’ sign. There was a study done in HardBallTimes earlier this year on TJS’s, and one of the interesting findings is that pitchers who usually get/need the 2nd TJSurgery are typically around 650 total innings pitched since the first one. Wainwright is at 640 total innings since his surgery, which is pretty much right on the mark. I hope that Wainwright is fine, I really do, as he’s one of my favorite pitchers in the league. But the signs are all there to point out that something is clearly WainNOTright (yeah I know it’s a bad joke!) with him right now. Unfortunately for the Cards they don’t really have any other options at this point. Lynn is on 3-days rest (he should have been game 1 starter it looks like so that the Cards could have used him today), Wacha hasn’t been used at all, indicating that his shoulder isn’t right still, and there really isn’t anyone else. Cards will probably hope to get at least 3-4 innings out of Wainwright and then will rely on the BP again. But that is where San Fran’s second major advantage comes into play!

Both teams have used their BP’s throughout this series of course, but with Bumgarner going 7.2 innings in game 1, San Fran’s pen wasn’t really taxed much in that particular game. By comparison, a number of Cardinals’ relievers have pitched 4 out of the last 5 days (Choate / Manness) or 3 out of the last 4 (Neshek / Martinez). Giants have a few relievers in the same boat, but the overall workload has been lower. Let’s compare:

SFG bullpen (5 key relievers): 11.2 innings with 154 total pitches thrown @ 13.1 pitches per relief-inning and 31 pitches per reliever so far (Machi only threw 7 pitches so took him out of the equation and Petit wasn’t counted in this analysis as he’s a pseudo-starter, not really a reliever in a true sense).

STL bullpen (6 key relievers): 15 innings with 258 total pitches thrown @ 17.2 pitches per relief-inning and 43 pitches per reliever so far.

It’s pretty clear from these numbers that this Cardinals bullpen is a lot more taxed than the Giants’. At 43 pitches per reliever so far, that’s 39% higher than what San Fran’s relievers (31 total pitches per) have thrown on average. So which bullpen will you trust in the later innings of this one if Wainwright is ON and this game is close? And what if Wainwright’s elbow issues are real and he can’t go past the 4th/5th inning again, can you really trust this Cardinals bullpen to finish the game for him? I think we can make a very convincing argument that not only do the Giants have a strong advantage with their starter on the mound, but they also have a significant advantage with their BP in this one.

Finally, I want to point out that my MLB computer model has this game at -138 with a total of 6.4. There’s no ‘odds value’ on this game, but of course in the post-season you will very rarely find much pure value if any. What the model is telling us is that these odds listed for today are what they should be in an ideal scenario for both teams: starters healthy (Wainwright is not), both bullpens fresh (Cards’ are much more taxed), and both offensive and fielding lineups at their optimal (Molina is hurt). But that’s just not the case today as San Fran is in a much better shape from top to bottom. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one go to -150 or even higher by the end of the day, but regardless of the odds, I love the chances of San Francisco Giants booking their trip to the World Series tonight.

San Francisco Giants

If you're a St. Louis fan, ya GOTTA be worried about Adam Wainwright. He came into the post-season on a monster tear, winning five in a row, and allowing just two earned runs over a 33 inning stretch for a ridiculous 0.55 ERA. Phabulous! Then the playoffs started. He faced the Dodgers in the opener and was rocked for ELEVEN hits and SIX earned runs in just FOUR and a third innings. Wainwright's next start was in the opener against San Francisco, and while it wasn't quite as ugly, he did give up 6 hits and 2 earned in only 4.2 innings. So, his post-season line reads: 17 hits and 8 earned runs in 9 innings, for a BIG PHAT 8.00 ERA. Is there something wrong with his arm??? Bet on it. We will. Now, look across the field at Madison Bumgarner, and it's all smiles for San Fran. MadBum has started three playoff games, and allowed only 2 earned runs over 23 innings for a microscopic 0.78 ERA. Gonna throw down half a Benj on the Giants.

2014 – 2015 NHL Record:- 3 – 0 @ +3.2 Units

Montreal Canadiens -125

Typically I would look to back a team that is seeking ‘playoff revenge’ early in the regular season, but this scenario is a little different. First, these teams hate each other. It’s a huge rivalry and I’m sure players from both sides have these games circled on their calendars. Second, I think Montreal will be just as motivated as Boston to play well in this game. Last year these teams played an epic 7-game playoff series for a chance to play in the Stanley Cup, with Montreal coming back to win the last 2 games, outscoring Boston 7 to 1 in the process. After the game, there was an incident in the handshake-line, where allegedly one of the Boston players told two Montreal players that “I’m going to f***ing kill you next year.” While ‘bulletin board’ material isn’t a big factor in an individual sport like baseball, it could be a factor in a physical, effort-based, plus team-based sport like hockey. Third, this is Boston’s 2nd road game of a b2b and their 3rd game in 4 days. They played a tight game against Colorado at home on the 13th, losing by 1 on a goal in the final seconds. Then yesterday, they played another really close and physical game @ Detroit, going to OT and then winning it in the shoot-out. By comparison, Montreal had 2 days off to rest and prepare for this one. Could be a pretty significant advantage from a physical standpoint, especially in the later period(s). And finally, the last factor that is in Montreal’s favor is that this is their home opener. Canadians are crazed about hockey as they love their sport probably even more than Americans love football. You better believe it that these fans at the game will treat this one as if it is a game 7 of a Stanley Cup Final. At the same time, that energy should rub off on the players as well, though I’m sure they’ll already be pretty jacked up to play their rival tonight. Lots of strong factors in Montreal’s favor here. Besides, Boston hasn’t looked very impressive at all so far. They are 2-3, but their first win against an 0-2-2 Flyers team came in the final minutes of the game and of course they needed a SO to win @ Detroit yesterday. Their -4 goal-differential so far is even worse than Montreal’s -3, who are 3-1 but lost their last game 7-1 @ Tampa, which was their 4th straight road-game. In any case, I think this is a great situational spot for the Canadiens, and if last year’s post-season wasn’t a total fluke, then we can confidently say that this team is just as good as the Bruins if not better. Back them with confidence tonight.

4 Unit Play. #305/#703 Take Virginia Tech Hokies -1 over Pittsburgh Panthers (Thursday 7:30 pm ESPN) Pittsburgh is in a major free fall at the moment going 0-3 in their last 3 games. All three of those setbacks came against marginal teams that will struggle to make bowl games. Virginia Tech is decent (not great) on both sides of the football and you can be sure they will be ready to stop the running attack of Pittsburgh. Virginia Tech is 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games played on Thursday. Pittsburgh is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games

Analysis:
PLAY: OREGON STATE
RATING: TRIPLE DIME PLAY

I'm taking the points with Oregon State. Utah is off to a 4-1 start, are off a bye week, and look on their way to their first bowl invitation since 2011. But the wins now, don't look as impressive as they did when they happened. Beating Fresno State means nothing. Beating Michigan means much less than it did before the season began. Losing at home to Washington State still looks ugly and the 30-28 win over UCLA doesn't even hold as much merit as it did a couple of weeks ago. Now they travel to Corvallis, a tough place to play. Oregon State is also off a bye week and they too are 4-1. The Beavers' wins have come against lessor opposition, also, but the Utes should not be laying points at this venue. They will likely start Kendal Thompson at QB on Thursday night for the struggling Travis Wilson, but I don't care which QB gets the nod. The Utes will face the Pac-12's second stingiest defense and second best pass efficiency defense and I expect the advantage to be on the side of the home team. I also expect one of the better efforts of the season from the OSU offense with the extra time off to get everyone on the same page. After all, October football is what OSU and Mike Riley have been all about. HC Riley (1997-98 & 2003-present) has done a terrific job improving this program through the course of individual seasons and it has shown ATS. The Beavers are on a 43-16-1 ATS run in October action with most of those numbers coming under Riley. They're also on a 16-5 ATS run off a bye week and 27-14 ATS under Riley when the line is in the +3/-3 range. Meanwhile, the Utes have covered just 4 of their last 14 conference games. Utah is over-valued in my opinion and I'm grabbing the available points with Oregon State, my Thursday night Tapout. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.
