Game of the Day: Oregon vs. California

Oregon Ducks at California Golden Bears (+17.5, 79)

Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota threw a career-high six touchdown passes at California two years ago and the Heisman Trophy candidate will return to California's Memorial Stadium for the first time since that performance when the No. 7 Ducks face the Golden Bears in a Pac-12 game Friday night. Mariota will also attempt to remain error free in the interception department as he has thrown 238 consecutive passes without being picked off, a streak that dates back to last season. The streak is the second longest in conference history behind the 353 Mariota made without an interception during his first two years.

California also has a gifted signal caller in Jared Goff, who owns the second-best quarterback rating in the Pac-12 behind Mariota and has thrown 24 touchdown passes against four interceptions while eclipsing the 300-yard barrier in five straight games. Bryce Treggs and Kenny Lawler continue to be solid options for Goff at the wide receiver position, but Stephen Anderson appears to be gaining favor as well, catching at least four passes in each of the last four games. Mariota will likely continue looking in the direction of wide receiver Devon Allen, the NCAA defending champion in the 110 hurdles who has six touchdown receptions.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Oregon -17.5

LINE HISTORY: The line opened at Cal +17 before money came in forcing a slight jump to +17.5. The total has seen a slight change as well, opening at 79.5 before dropping to 79.

INJURY REPORT: Oregon - WR Keanon Lowe (Ques-Hamstring) Cal - WR Trevor Davis (Out-Head)

WEATHER FORECAST: Clear skies and mild temperatures are expected for the game. At kickoff the temperature will be 71°F but will quickly drop to 60°F by the fourth quarter.

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "Cal had 56 yards on 31 rushes last week and 64 yards on 33 carries the week before. Conversely, Oregon leads the Pac-12 with 217.3 rushing yards per game. The game opened Ore -17 and currently stands -17.5. Looks to be a very boring game and the public has not gotten involved as of yet. Oregon will have a walk over in this game and can prob name their own score." - Scott Kaminsky

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "Ducks have rounded back into the playoff contenders they were expected to be with the return of two injured starting offensive linemen, making QB Marcus Mariota much more dangerous. Although they’ve been outgained in each of their last five games, the Bears numbers are up across the board this year as opposed to last. The question is whether Oregon puts together the complete game they are capable of, or if they get caught napping in a nasty Stanford look ahead revenger up next." - Marc Lawrence

ABOUT OREGON (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12): The Ducks and Golden Bears have played the same two teams in their last two games. Oregon beat a solid UCLA squad by 12 and followed up with a 35-point victory last weekend against Washington, while Cal lost to the Huskies by 24 and was edged by two points last weekend against the Bruins. Oregon running back Royce Freeman continues to dominate, rushing for at least 100 yards in the last two games, owning 11 touchdowns and sitting within 76 rushing yards of breaking the freshman program for a season.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA (4-3, 2-3): The Golden Bears will definitely need to improve on defense if they expect to keep up with the Ducks. California enters the game giving up an average of 38.4 points, which ranks 117th out of the 125 FBS teams. One of the bright spots was safety Griffin Piatt, the team’s leading tackler who also has a team-high three interceptions, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury against Washington.

*Ducks are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games following a ATS win.
*Under is 7-3-1 in Golden Bears last 11 games following a S.U. loss.
*Under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.
*Home team is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.

CONSENSUS: 55.3 percent are taking the Ducks -17.5 with 53.5 percent of the community taking the over.

FRIDAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL SELECTIONS

2-Unit Play. Take #114 Boise State (-6.5) over BYU (9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24)
Note: This play is from the KING System.

The Cougars fell off a cliff when their starting quarterback went down. They have shown me nothing to make me think that they will go to the Smurf Turf and win this game outright so I have no problems laying the points. BYU has lost three straight and all three L's game against teams that I think are weaker than Boise State. The Broncos have been outstanding, with the exception of that fluke loss at Air Force, and they should make it six wins in seven tries this weekend. Boise State has a rare revenge angle in this game after a 17-point loss in Provo last year. I think they will take full advantage and will return the favor in this Friday night affair.

6 Unit Play. #114/#114 Take Boise State Broncos -6.5 over BYU Cougars (Friday 9 pm ESPN)

Revenge Game of the Year

Boise State did not look that impressive last week against Fresno State, but they still won the game! That is more than BYU can say as they lost to Nevada as a double-digit favorite at home. The fact remains that BYU is continuing to get too much respect from the oddsmakers. This is a completely different team without Taysom Hill, and his backup is just not up to par after numerous turnovers. BYU does not have the same rushing attack and thus has to rely more on the passing game. This is the best team BYU will have faced in 2014, and they are also playing a team with revenge from last season. The Broncos have won two straight games after their Air Force debacle, including beating Nevada on the road, and QB Grant Hedrick is playing much better of late with just one interception in his last two games. Boise State got run over last year in Provo, and you can bet that does not sit well with the 2014 team. BYU is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall. Boise State is 9-3 ATS in their last 12 home games against teams with a winning road record. We will keep fading the Cougars with these short numbers.

World Series Betting Preview: Royals at Giants

Kansas City Royals at San Francisco Giants (-127, 7)

Tim Hudson pitches in a World Series game for the first time in his 16-year-career when the San Francisco Giants host the Kansas City Royals in Game 3 on Friday. The 39-year-old Hudson will attempt to pitch the Giants into the series lead after the teams split two games in Kansas City. “Obviously, when you go 16 years without having been able to experience something like this, you wonder if it’s going to happen,” Hudson told reporters. “I’m no different than anybody.”

The Royals avoided a series hole by producing a 7-2 victory in Game 2 to halt San Francisco’s streak of seven consecutive World Series wins. Kansas City designated hitter Billy Butler is 3-for-6 with two RBIs over the first two games to break out of the postseason doldrums that have him looking for his first homer. Giants catcher Buster Posey also hasn’t homered and is 2-for-9 in the World Series while red-hot third baseman Pablo Sandoval (4-for-9 in the World Series) also hasn’t gone deep despite batting .346 in the postseason.

LINE HISTORY: The line has not shifted too much since opening climbing just two points from San Francisco -125 to -127. The total opened at 7 and has yet to move.

WEATHER REPORT: A cloudy night is in store for Game 3, but there is little chance of precipitation. There temperature is expected to be a comfortable 64°F with a high humidity.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "The Giants got what they wanted in Kansas City, earning a split before heading back home to San Francisco. It's important to note that the Royals have been one of the best road teams in baseball all year, going 51-34. That's a better record than the Giants have posted at home (49-37). The pitching matchup is virtually a wash in Game 3 with Guthrie squaring off against Hudson. I'm anticipating a tight contest, with a late clutch hit proving to be the difference. The total could offer some value at '7' as a low-scoring affair should be in order after back-to-back blowouts. Consider playing the under." - Sean Murphy

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Jeremy Guthrie (0-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. Giants RH Tim Hudson (0-0, 3.29)

Guthrie is making his second start of the postseason, having received a no-decision against Baltimore on Oct. 14 when he gave up one run and three hits in five innings. He spent part of 2012 in the National League with the Colorado Rockies and has made two career starts at AT&T Park, going 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 11 1/3 innings. “He’s a tremendous clubhouse presence and he’s a guy with a lot of experience,” Royals manager Ned Yost said in a press conference.

Hudson will be pitching for the first time since taking a no-decision against St. Louis on Oct. 14 when he allowed four runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He lost his final four regular-season starts and Giants manager Bruce Bochy said at a press conference that Hudson’s issues were tied to a nagging hip injury. “It’s hard enough to play this game when you’re healthy but when you’re pitching and your hip’s bothering you a little – he’s a warrior,” Bochy said. “He was never complaining, he was never making excuses but it was a fact.”

TRENDS:

*Royals are 5-1 in Guthries last 6 road starts.
*Giants are 13-3 in their last 16 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
*Over is 11-4-2 in Royals last 17 games following an off day.
*Over is 6-0 in Giants last 6 overall.

CONSENSUS: 55 percent of users are backing the Giants -127 with 62 percent backing the over.

Hondo

Hondo’s salute to MC

This isn’t about Hondo and his shared perch atop the Bettor’s Guide Best Bet Standings or his steady and solid work in the compulsories.

No, this is about the torrid pace being set by Mark Cannizzaro, who recently requested Mr. Aitch give him “a shout-out” because of his consistent excellence.

Well, by gosh, he deserves it. So let’s give some Hondo Nation props to Mark and whoever is making his picks for him this season. Cheers to both of you!

Jets over Bills: Ahhh, Buffalo! A journeyman QB plus a thoroughly depleted backfield add up to a legitimate chance for the Jets to break their schneid at six. Actually, if you looked at the Jets schedule before the season, this probably is right where you figured they’d be after beating the Raiders in Week 1 and then facing six elite QBs. Then again, with losses looming in Weeks 9 and 10 (Chiefs and Steelers), they might not want to do anything to jeopardize a shot at Jameis Winston, who clearly was born to be a Jet.

John Idzik on his acquisition of Percy Harvin: “It’s really [a matter of] immersing him into what it is to act like a Jet, be a Jet and play like a Jet.” No offense, John, but judging by the talented troublemaker’s spotty résumé, it would seem he already has figured that out.

Lions over Falcons: This is Part 2 of Roger Goodell’s London Obsession Games. Speaking of Goodell, Ray Rice’s appeal of his indefinite suspension will be heard Nov. 5 and 6, and the commissioner, who levied the ban, will testify. It’s good of him to come out from under his desk for something other than a domestic violence photo op.

Vikings over Buccaneers: Jennifer Lopez reportedly is close to a signing a deal that will pay her $350K per show three times a week for 24 weeks at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. If she keeps making that kind of cash, she won’t have to sing at birthday parties for tyrannical Eastern European dictators.

Bears over Patriots: Belichick sent Darrelle Revis home Tuesday because he was late for a meeting. Now Revis knows what everyone else knows: The Hoodie is a real stickler for the rules — except for when it comes to illegally videotaping opponents.

Chiefs over Rams: There was another fence jumper at the White House on Wednesday, but he never made it to the President’s residence because two of the Secret Service’s best agents were on duty and stopped him. Congratulations, Fido and Rover!

Panthers over Seahawks: Props to Renee Zellweger for being named this year’s recipient of the “Kenny Rogers Who The Hell Are You Award.” The good thing about making yourself totally unrecognizable is that if you have any nude selfies and they get hacked, no one will know it’s you.

Dolphins over Jaguars: David Letterman fired his cue card guy, Tony Mendez, for assaulting writer Bill Scheft. Sources say Dirty Dave became upset when one of them almost landed on the Late Show Intern Love Couch, which could have caused serious injury to Dave and one of the interns.

Titans over Texans: With the death of Oscar de la Renta, word is designers and fabric makers are lining up in Chappaqua, hoping to land Hillary Clinton’s lucrative double-wide woolen pantsuit business.

Bill Clinton once said of a de la Renta creation: “I still remember when Hillary walked out in that gown [at his inauguration ball in 1997]. I thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s beautiful.’ ” But what about Hillary, Bill?

Bengals over Ravens: Bill’s always had a great appreciation for Oscar’s work. That’s why he wasn’t upset when he stained the Portly Pepperpot’s crusty blue love dress — it wasn’t a de la Renta.

Cardinals over Eagles: Here’s the latest from Daily News columnist Anthony “A-Wad” Weiner: “Realistically, my political career is probably over.” Over? C’mon, A-Wad, where’s that notorious “I’ll show-’em/-it attitude” of yours?

Colts over Steelers: Accused rapist Sanford “The Cashew” Rubenstein, lawyer and former pal of Al Sharpton, reportedly was turned away at a Manhattan sex club called Checkmate last weekend. The proprietor, having read about Rubenstein’s shortcomings, told San The Little Man: “It’s a game of inches, not a game of inch.”

Raiders over Browns: Emailer Donny Mac points out not everything is going wrong for Rubenstein. He was just asked to star in a remake of a Sylvester Stallone/Kurt Russell classic movie, this one to be called: “Tango and Cashew.”

Packers over Saints: Here’s the Mismatch of the Day: Aaron Rodgers vs. a Rob Ryan-coached defense.

Cowboys over Redskins: How good is the Cowboys’ running game? Some say it’s even better than the one being used by Democratic candidates as they run as fast and far as possible from Obama and his failed policies?

Obama went to vote early at a Chicago polling station, and while standing next to a woman, was told by her fiancé: “Mr. President, don’t touch my girlfriend.” The President calmly responded he wasn’t planning on doing so, which placated the guy until Obama then told him: “If you like your girlfriend, you can keep your girlfriend.”

BEST BETS: Jets, Colts, Packers.

Thursday night: Broncos.

Hill – still – for Heisman. That would be our campaign cry if we were running around Provo. And why not? Georgia is doing just fi ne without Todd Gurley, FSU beat Clemson without Jameis Winston but BYU has gone from contender to pretender without the services of star QB Taysom Hill. A 4-0 SU start in which the Cougars averaged 37.5 PPG has turned into a 0-3 SUATS nightmare since Hill’s season-ending leg injury. We know it won’t get any easier against a Boise bunch that has held three of its last four foes to season-low yardage but the Cougs do arrive with a 6-0 ATS road dog log off back-to-back SU losses and a 10-1 ATS mark as pups versus .500 or greater opposition. They have also covered the last three in the series and won’t be intimated by the smurf turf. In fact, Bronco backers have been a bit blue in home games off a previous home affair as they haven’t cashed a ticket in this scenario since 2010 (0-5 ATS). So while the Mormons may not fi nd their thrill without Taysom Hill, look for the visitors to use some strong dog pedigree to cover this generous number. A must take.

Kevin's Pick(s):

Kyle and I each have a pick for tonight's game 3...
2 UNIT = Kansas City Royals @ San Francisco Giants - ROYALS TO WIN (+120)
Listed Pitchers: Guthrie vs Hudson
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 2.40 units)

Kyle's Pick(s)
2 UNIT = Kansas City Royals @ San Francisco Giants - OVER 7 RUNS (-103)
Listed Pitchers: Guthrie vs. Hudson
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.94 units)
A positive start to the World Series after the Giants easily beat the Royals in game 1. It was the complete opposite in game 2, as the Royals rolled over the Giants to tie things up. I look for a 2-0 start to the World Series with a winning pick tonight.
The series shifts to San Francisco Friday night with a lot to still be decided in this one. After the first two games you can often get a feel for the direction it is going to go, but in this case, one can make a solid case for both teams to win it all. The slight edge goes to the Giants considering as it stands now they have home field advantage after taking one in Kansas City. The pitching matchup tonight of Guthrie and Hudson doesn't get me all that excited. I find it difficult to back either. As a result, I'm taking a look at the total tonight. I have a feeling one gets hammered, similar to the first two games, or both pitchers suffer. In either scenario I think the total will get OVER 7 runs. Tim Hudson hasn't been in a consistent groove in quite awhile. He finished the regular season up pitching a 10.97 ERA with a 2.16 WHIP in his last three. His last postseason start against the Cards wasn't a walk in the park, getting hit for 4 runs and 7 hits over 6 innings. In half of his last 10 starts, Hudson gave up 4 or more runs. He was solid the first-half of the season, but fell apart in the second-half. Hudson had an ERA of 8.72 with a 1.85 WHIP in September. Jeremy Guthrie has been quite strong in that respect, a 2.40 ERA in the last month. However, he has a career 6.14 ERA against them and 1.98 WHIP. The first start of his career in the postseason came against the Orioles, a fine start, but he has never been on this stage before in his career. There should be enough runs here for it go to go OVER 7.
Cheers,

Carson K - Royals +117

This is really tough for me. I believe every game is a coin flip. Unless Bumgarner is pitching. I have KC to win the Series (nice chunk on it). So i have 3 opitions, 1-Sit this out and just cheer on KC. 2-Put a little on SF just in case. 3-Say f*ck it and keep going with KC.

Hudson @ home vs. Guthrie on the road. Really not that much of a difference. I think we will see a run 1 game or it will be all tied up heading into the 7th. If thats the case I'll take KC.

The question I was asked the other day. "What will KC do when they finally lose a game?" My answer was, win the next 4. I was only joking at first. But now I'm starting to believe they can.

I liked what I seen from the Royals in Game 2. Fire, Fight and F*ck You we can win this thing attitude. They didn't care that they were down 0-1. The Champ(SF) got hit in the mouth and he's bleeding. In 2010 they went up 2-0 on Texas and they knew they were better. 2012 they swept the Tigers. They are in for a fight with this KC team. How will they respond?

Over Oregon/California

Hello guys , I know we could had a better number early this week, but the number on the total only seems to go up its gone to 79 this morning, well this 2 teams can end up scoring 100 easy

this has written shootout all over, the Oregon Ducks averaging 41.6 points a game ,Oregon now 6th ranked and in control of the PAC 12 North travel to Santa Clara tonight to play the California Bears who are playing a good season where they were competitive all season with the exception of the Washington game,Cal QB Jared Goff is one of the most underrated in College football, beeing fourth in efficiency rate 173.1, with 24 Touchdown passes this season

both teams need the win ,Oregon to defend the top spot in the PAC12 North and remain in contention for the four team Play Offs,California Bears need 2 more wins to become bowl eligible

Bears poor pass defense allowing almost 400 yards in average through the air, this could be the game for Ducks QB Marcus Mariota to shine with completing 70.2 % of his passes, there is no question Mariots will get the 44 yards he needs to become Oregons all time leader breaking Bill Musgraves record

Oregon RB Royce Freeman needs 76yrds to break the all time Ducks record for a freshman, Freeman scored 4TDs last week against Washington, so all is set for a record breaking game

Raiderman - Royals

The pitching match-up is Jeremy Guthrie (13-11, 4.13 ERA) vs Tim Hudson (9-13, 3.57 ERA) for the Giants. What I like about this match-up is that Guthrie comes in pitching better down the stretch than Hudson. During September, Hudson was 0-4 with an 8.72 ERA while Guthrie was 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA. During the post-season neither pitcher has logged a decision but Hudson's ERA is 3.29 and he has allowed 14 hits in 13.2 innings. Certainly, Hudson's post season numbers aren't bad by any stretch. Guthrie has had one post-season appearance in which he pitched 5 innings against Baltimore in the ALCS and allowed just one run (1.80 ERA) on 3 hits. This will be the first World Series start for both pitchers. Guthrie is more of a fly ball pitcher, and AT&T is not a homer friendly park, so if Guthrie can effectively keep the ball down, the Royals should be in good shape with their defense and bullpen.

The SF bullpen really let the Giants down the other night, so this could be a true wild card. Hudson only averaged 6 innings per start, so I expect the bullpen to come into play tonight. Meanwhile, I thought Ventura really battled himself the other night, but the KC bullpen came in and shut down the Giants. This could be something we see again before this series is over. Neither of these pitchers is a dominant pitcher, so the bullpens will be called upon early. If it comes down to pitching and defense late, we know the Royals have got the goods.

I expect this to be a high scoring game, something along the lines of 6-4 or so, so I would definitely lean to the Over as well (can't believe this total is 7 - I would have looked for 8 myself).
