Game of the Day: Clemson at Wake Forest

Clemson Tigers at Wake Forest Demon Deacons (+22.5, 42.5)

Wake Forest is winless in the ACC and having some trouble scoring points since moving into conference play. The Demon Deacons hope to solve their offensive problems and play a role in the race at the top of the conference when they host No. 19 Clemson on Thursday. The Tigers are winners of five straight thanks in large part to a defense that has allowed an average of nine points in the last four contests.

That Clemson defense is taking on a Wake Forest rushing attack that ranks last among 128 FBS teams with an average of 34.5 yards on the ground and a scoring offense sitting at 125th with an average of 14.8 points. “We aren't as strong or as physical as we need to be,” Demon Deacons coach Dave Clawson told reporters. “We're very young in a lot of our linemen positions, but that is part of a rebuild. We will get a little stronger every year.” Wake Forest was crushed 56-7 at Clemson last season.

ABOUT WAKE FOREST (2-6 SU, 0-4 ACC, 4-4 ATS, 1-7 O/U): The 23-17 home loss to Boston College on Oct. 25 marked the Demon Deacons’ highest-scoring effort since a 24-21 win over Army on Sept. 20, which matched their best output of the season. Freshman quarterback John Wolford has one touchdown pass and six interceptions in conference play and gets little help from a ground game that totaled 19 yards in the loss to Boston College. “We've got a lot of things to clean up,” Clawson told reporters. “We're early in this process, and if we can establish effort as a starting point, then we are headed in the right direction."

Utah State has a very good defense and the Aggies became an underrated team when Darell Garretson took over for an ineffective and injured Chuckie Keeton in the middle of their week 3 game against Wake Forest. I had a couple of Best Bet winners with Utah State with Garretson at quarterback (their upset win as a 21 point dog at BYU and an 18 point win over Air Force) but Garretson was injured against Colorado State and 3rd string quarterback Harrison played at the same low level that Keeton played at. Harrison suffered a knee injury late against UNLV in week 9 and it looks like the quarterback position may be back in good hands with freshman Kent Myers, who has completed 17 of 20 passes while averaging 9.8 yards per pass play. That’s obviously a small sample, but it’s doubtful that a bad quarterback would complete 17 of 20 passes and Myers was very accurate playing high school ball in Texas, where he completed 71% of his passes with 42 touchdown passes against just 5 interceptions. I realize that there is a big difference between high school and college but accuracy is accuracy and it translates well at the next level. Obviously, I don’t expect Myers to continue to complete 85% of his passes but he should be able to play at or close to the level that Garretson played at and I’d favor Utah State by 14 points in this game even if he played at the average level of the Utah State quarterbacks. I think he’ll be even better than that and it doesn’t even take a special quarterback to move the ball against a sub-par Wyoming defense that’s allowed 6.2 yards per play this season to teams that would average 5.6 yppl against an average team. The unit is even worse lately with multiple injuries to key defensive players, including LB Mark Nzeocha, who is their best defensive player, and 2 starting defensive backs (and a 3rd, Jesse Sampson, is questionable). My math model had Utah State moving the ball well even before adjusting for Wyoming’s injury situation and the Aggies should score around 30 points barring an unforeseen breakout of turnovers.

Utah State’s defense continues to play consistently well, as the Aggies have allowed between 14 and 24 points in 8 consecutive games while yielding just 4.6 yards per play for the season (against teams that would average 5.2 yppl against an average team). Wyoming’s loss of star RB Shaun Wick (705 yards at 6.3 ypr) doesn’t seem as painful after Brian Hill’s big game last week at Fresno and Hill is now averaging 6.4 ypr – so Wyoming’s rushing attack still rates at 0.5 yards per rushing play better than average. However, Utah State is very good defending the run, allowing just 3.8 yprp this season (to teams that would average 4.7 yprp against an average team). The Aggies are also good against the pass and Wyoming’s mediocre pass attack is projected to be limited to a modest 5.7 yards per pass play in this game while the rushing attack projects at 4.7 yprp. Overall, the Cowboys’ attack is projected to slowed to 317 yards at 5.2 yppl, which will make it tough to keep up with a Utah State offense seemingly once again in capable hands.

The math model liked Utah State here before adjusting for an improved quarterback situation for Utah State and for Wyoming’s banged up defense and I’ll take Utah State in a 3-Star Best Bet at -7 points or less, for 2-Stars up to -8 and for 1-Star up to -9

So that leaves Leonard (30 mins yesterday), Parker (37 mins), Green (33 mins), Diaw (34 mins), Joseph, Ayres, Bonner, and a few other scrubs. Houston has been dynamite so far this year (#2 Off Eff / #4 Def Eff) while the Spurs haven’t been very efficient just yet. I know that typically San Antonio has their ‘backups’ pick up the slack for the starters when they’re rested/injured, but this one feels a bit different. San Antonio is just NOT in ‘mid-season’ form yet, while the Rockets are hitting on all cylinders. This is a big mismatch from my perspective, and doesn’t help that the Spurs are short-handed for this one. Besides, Houston went 4-0 against the Spurs last year, as their athleticism, speed, and pace were just too much for San Antonio. I’d be surprised if they don’t win tonight.

Cleveland hasn’t won a divisional road game since 2008. Bengals have a 14-game home winning streak. It’s a Thursday Night game which naturally favors the home team. But of course these are trends, and trends tend to be broken. The real reason for the play is that Cincy is the better team, especially at home. The Browns are a winning team but that’s bound to happen when you face opponents like TEN, JAX, OAK, and TBB. I know the Browns played Pittsburgh well twice as well as Baltimore and the Saints, but that was earlier in the year. In the last 3 weeks of the season, this Browns team has been horrible and that’s when they’ve faced JAX, OAK, and TBB, the consensus bottom-3 teams in the league. I like to use FootballOutsiders’ advanced stats (DVOA) when analyzing teams and in the last 3 weeks, Cleveland’s average DVOA (it’s their per play rate statistic adjusted for the strength of an opponent) was -38.8%. Basically, on a per-play basis, they’ve been almost 40% worse than a league average team. For comparison purposes, the worst team in the league based on DVOA this year is Tampa Bay, and they’re at -36.7%. So in the last 3 weeks of the season, Cleveland has played like one of the worst teams in the league. So what changed? Well, they lost their stud center Alex Mack. Since then their run-game went to hell and the team has to rely on Hoyer to move the ball on offense. Here lies the problem, Cincy is the 4th best passD in the league. You beat this team by running the ball on them, but I’m not sure Cleveland will be capable of doing so. Cincy has now scored 33, 27, 37, 33, and 24 points at home this year, for an average of 31 PPG. Their stud rookie RB Jeremy Hill is going to have a lot of success against Cleveland 31st ranked runD and of course AJ Green and Sanu are matchup nightmare on the outside. Browns will need to score points to keep up and I just don’t see them able to do so here. Keep in mind that the Bengals are missing a number of key linebackers as well as Leon Hall. Due to these injury concerns I won’t lay the points but teasing the Bengals is much better play from my standpoint.

Cardinals:

I’ll have more on this game in my weekly breakdowns, but basically I’m fading a bad Rams team coming off a huge road-win. This is St Louis’ 3rd straight road game also, and after playing SEA, KCC, and SF in 3 consecutive weeks, I expect a major letdown at Arizona. Cardinals should win this one.

Houston is absolutely rolling and it will continue tonight. San Antonio has yet to get their sea legs, as they are coasting a bit thus far, early in the season, as people become reaquainted with the rigors of the NBA season. This is a tough spot for the Spurs as they almost blew a 17-point lead last night versus Atlanta and held on for a 94-92 win. Now their “older” players have to deal with a back-to-back versus one of the hottest teams in the league, and it is a team that has taken the last five games S.U. in the series. This is going to be a game that is entertaining throughout, and may be a bit closer than we all want it to be, but in the end the hotter team will prevail and cover this small line. San Antonio is just 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games following an ATS loss and, even worse, just 1-8 ATS in their last nine versus the NBA’s Southwest Division. Houston meanwhile, is 7-0 ATS in their last seven games versus a team with a winning S.U. record and 6-0 ATS in their last six games versus the Western Conference

I think that the Bengals are going to pound the Browns tonight. I don’t think that Cleveland is any good at all and I think that they are going to get wrecked in Thursday Night Football. And it isn’t like that hasn’t been the theme all year in these Thursday games. Of the nine Thursday night games seven of them have been decided by 14 points or more. And one of the ones that wasn’t was a blowout (Colts-Texans) before the home team made a furious rally. The rest of these Thursday games have been awful. I think that this one has the makings of another blowout. First of all, Cleveland is not that good. I know everyone is excited for them because they are 5-3. But that is a completely misleading 5-3. First off, they have played five of their last seven games at home. Secondly, in the last month they have faced the Titans, Jaguars, Raiders and Bucs; that’s four of the five worst teams in football. And if you have watched those games rather than just looking at the final results you would see a Browns team that is playing some ugly football. They probably shouldn’t have beaten the Bucs last Sunday. It was 9-6 in the fourth quarter against the Raiders the week prior. And this team actually lost – got blown out, actually – on the road against the Jaguars. That’s not inspiring. Cleveland has the situational disadvantage of having to travel on this short week and they are dealing with some major injury issues. They are likely going to be without their two best receivers, Jordan Cameron and Andrew Hawkins. The rest of the Cleveland receiving corps is less than awe inspiring. And that is what this beleaguered Bengals back seven needs to face at the moment. Cincinnati’s linebacking corps is pathetic. But I don’t know that the Browns will be able to take full advantage because they don’t have healthy skill people of their own. I have been betting pretty hard against Cincinnati over the last month. They are not nearly as good as people think they are. But this team has been awesome at home. They are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 home games and a lot of those wins have come against lines like this. The Browns have been awful on the road this year. They were getting blown out by the Steelers and the Titans before coming back in those games and they were beaten by 18 by the hapless Jaguars. The Bengals offense has a completely different look now that Muhammed Sanu has some confidence and A.J. Green is back from injury. The Bengals played an awfully sloppy game last week against the Jaguars and they still won by 10 points. I think they can find a way to gut this one out and I think that if they get Cleveland down – as the Browns have been in all of their road games – then the Bengals will find a way to drive a stake through their heart.
