6 Unit Play. #738 Take BYU (-9 First Half Line) over Arkansas Little Rock (9:30 pm BYU TV) Expect BYU to start strong in this game after they had a battle of 40 minutes in their opening game against Long Beach State. BYU scores points in spirits and expect them to come close to the 100-point mark on Tuesday. UALR struggled to put away Arkansas Monticello on their opening game and making a cross country trip to play in the Marriott Center will be too much to overcome. BYU has a tendency to let up in games late when they get a big lead and thus we will take the lower number with the first half line

5-Unit Play. Take #715 Toledo +12 over VCU (Tuesday, November 18th at 6:00 p.m.)

I am the first person to say that VCU is a very good basketball team and that Shaka Smart has turned this program into a national contender. Smart’s teams are always fun to watch and they are loaded with athleticism. They apply full-court pressure from start to finish and ultimately wear out their competition forcing turnovers that lead to easy baskets. The key to beating VCU is having good guard play and a disciplined team. Toledo fits the bill.

This Rockets team returns a lot of talent from a team that was 27-7 last season and finished first in the MAC West. Their two starting guards are the leaders of the team and that is huge in this matchup. Juice Brown, an all MAC player last year, and Justin Drummond (both preseason All-Mac players) will have to play at their best tonight for Toledo to pull off the upset. Drummond is one of the best leaders in all of college basketball while Brown will go down as one of the school’s best all-time players. Toledo returns 6 of their top 7 scorers and they have the guard depth to handle the pressure of VCU.

This is a great matchup between two good teams. 14 points is way too many.

Take Toledo.

4-Unit Play. Take #713 Utah +4.5 over San Diego State (Tuesday, November 18th at 4:00 p.m.)

San Diego State is a top 25 team and rightfully so. Steve Fisher has done a wonderful job building them into a legitimate contender. However, Utah is the team that no one is talking about that could be a legitimate top 10 team by year’s end. Larry Krystowiak has done a remarkable rebuiltding job at Utah and this is his best team yet. He returns 4 starters and he added some key contributors in the offseason.

I really like the Utes in this matchup. They play team basketball and the addition of Jakob Poetl provides them with a terrific rebounder and scorer at the 5-spot. This is a complete basketball team and they will not be intimidated by the atmosphere. As a matter of fact, the home court advantage is the only advantage I see for SDSU in this matchup. If this game was played on a neutral court or at Utah, it would be a much bigger play for me.

Take Utah.

4-Unit Play. Take #726 Duke -7.5 over Michigan State (Tuesday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m.)

Is it possible for Michigan State to be a 7.5 point underdog to anyone in the country? The short answer is: yes. The Spartans will play good defense and they will rebound the basketball but they do not have the scoring prowess to hang with a loaded Duke squad. Izzo will have a tough time duplicating his recent success with this Spartans team. Having said that, keep an eye on them in the second half of the season.

This is one of the most talented Duke teams in recent memory. Coach K has done a great job putting this team together and an even better job of scheduling such a matchup early in the year to test his younger players. His Duke teams have beaten Izzo’s Spartans six straight times and I look for that streak to continue tonight. It will not shock me at all to see Michigan State start fast while the younger Duke players adjust to the atmosphere. However, Duke has too much firepower and they will pull away in the second half.

Take Duke.

Your Tuesday Winner...

Tuesday winner is a 75 Dime release on the Lakers and Atlanta Hawks to play Over the total. At 6:00 am Vegas time, the total for this game stands at 212 1/2 points.

Tuesday's Analysis

Big total here, but you have to play Over, as both the Lakers and the Hawks have shown early on that they like to play them high.

Los Angeles comes to the A-T-L having played 3 of their last 4 Over the total, and have played Overs in 7 of their 10 games played so far this year.

Atlanta has been right there with L.A., playing Overs in their last pair of games, and 6 of their 9 games overall this season.

Furthermore, the Lakers have played ALL 4 of their roadies Over the total, while the Hawks have landed Over in 3 of their 4 games at Philips Arena.

Series numbers show both meeting last year playing Over the total. Throw in 5 of 8 between the teams overall Over, and 3 of the last 4 in Atlanta landing Over the total, and I think the logical choice here is to play it Over and cheer on some serious offense tonight between Los Angeles and Atlanta.

Complimentary NHL Pick for November 18th, 2014

Game: Pittsburgh Penguins @ Montreal Canadiens
Time: Tuesday 11/18 7:35 PM Eastern
Pick: Pittsburgh -120 (moneyline) at Bovada

The Pittsburgh Penguins are making a case that they are the team to beat this season in the NHL. Pittsburgh has had a strong team for quite a few years, and they have shown the propensity to get hot and stay hot, and tend to go on extensive runs when they do. They are on one right now, and aside from a hiccup in New York against the Rangers, the Pens have been flawless in their other nine games surrounding the loss. Montreal has played well in posting a 14-4-1 mark on the season, and this could be a preview of the Eastern Conference Finals. The Canadiens have won six straight of their own, allowing 1 goal or less in five of them. A sure sign of trouble for Montreal is the fact that the Penguins are 61-24 in their last 85 games after allowing 2 or fewer goals in their prvious game as well as 76-36 in their last 112 following a win. Take the hot road team Pittsburgh.

6-Unit Play. Take #728 Florida State (-11) over Northeastern (7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18)

This is a very strong Florida State team. I think they will be one of the top teams in the ACC this year even though they are not getting as much credit as the other top teams in the league. Northeastern is coming off a hard fought win over rival Boston University. That game was played on the Celtics’ home court at TD Center in Boston. Now the Huskies have to go on the road and face a tough ACC opponent. Northeastern is just 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games overall and they are 1-4 ATS after a win. Florida State is 10-4 ATS in its last 15 nonconference games. The Seminoles won and covered easily in their opener. I think they will do the same thing in this game. Lay the points in this one as FSU is just too much.

NBA Pick #1: 701 Los Angeles Lakers @ 702 Atlanta Hawks
Rating: 3 units – Single Dime Play
Pick: Los Angeles Lakers (+9.5) (Play up to +8.5)
Odds: -105
Detailed Write Up:

The Lakers have in this match up some key factors that will be favorable to them and that will turn the team into a more competitive team than usual in here. First of all, Carroll will still be out for tonight’s game and he’s Atlanta’s best wing defender, so Kobe will have an easier than expected match up in here. The Lakers’ offense had problems against Golden State’s aggressive defense, but Atlanta’s defense is far from being as aggressive as the Warriors.

I also predict the Lakers to have a great edge on rebounding tonight, as Atlanta is just #19 on defensive rebounding in the league, while the Lakers are #4 in the league on offensive rebounding. Atlanta’s offense will obviously generate some points against the Lakers’ poor defense, but with Kobe, Young coming off the bench and a rebounding edge, I expect the LA team to actually turn this game into a competitive one. Therefore, I’ll take the Lakers in here.

NBA Picks #2 & #3: 703 New York Knicks @ 704 Milwaukee Bucks
Rating: 3 units – Single Dime Play
Pick: New York Knicks (+2.5) (Play up to pk)
Odds: -113

Rating: 3 units – Single Dime Play
Pick: Over 191 (Play up to 192.5)
Odds: -113
Detailed Write Up:

This is quite favorable match up for the Knicks. Milwaukee has been a nice surprise early on the season thanks to a great defense. They are particularly good on rim defense thanks to Sanders and in fact two of their last three opponents scored just 28 and 24 points at the paint against them!

The good news for the Knicks is that their offense isn’t directed at scoring near the basket. In fact, they are one of the teams in the league that shoots the lowest amount of shots near the basket, as they’re a mid-range jump shooting team, something that will remove Milwaukee’s defense out of their comfort zone.

On the other side, Milwaukee’s offense loves to attack the rim by being #3 in the league in volume shots at the rim. However, the Knicks’ defense have surprisingly been quite good at protecting the rim and they are #1 in the league with the least points allowed in the paint with just 34.4 points per game! The area where the Knicks’ defense struggles is on the perimeter, but there’s an area where the Bucks’ offense isn’t very good as well.

I believe this game will be played in a relatively fast pace, as Milwaukee will want the Knicks to run, but at the end I believe the NY team has a good match up to get an important win in here. As I expect the game to be played in a fast pace with a good number of points being scored, I’ll take both the Knicks and the Over in here.

NBA Pick #4: 705 Oklahoma City Thunder @ 706 Utah Jazz
Rating: 3 units – Single Dime Play
Pick: Oklahoma City Thunder (+3.5) (Play up to +2)
Odds: -105
Detailed Write Up:

Oklahoma City has a great match up in here tonight. Utah is quite inconsistent when it comes to perimeter shooting and so, they need to score badly near the basket. In fact, they were competitive on their last three games of their road trip thanks to that, as they scored 52, 42 and 42 points in the paint.

This will be very hard to replicate against a Thunder interior defense that has been getting better and better over the last few weeks. In fact, on their last game against Houston last Sunday night, they held the Rockets to just 28 points in the paint, while shutting down Howard completely.

On the other hand, Utah’s weakest link on defense is their PG Burke and this is the position where the Thunder currently has their main offensive weapon at the moment with the aggressive Reggie Jackson exploring Burke’s poor defensive skills in here. I believe this is a great spot for Oklahoma City to be really competitive on a road game and so, I’ll take them in here.

Milwaukee Bucks -2

One home win against a terrible Denver team, playing at 1PM EST time after a long trip to the East Coast, and all of a sudden the Knicks are once again overvalued in the following game? Prior to that game, NY lost 7 straight, so it’s hard to proclaim the fact that they’ve ‘turned their season around’ all of a sudden. The Bucks have won 3 out of their last 4, beating teams like MEM, OKC, and MIA. Of course we have to remember that MEM was on a b2b and playing their 4th straight road game, while Miami was without Wade. Still, this is an improved team from last year. They rank 2nd overall on D, rebound the ball well, and have solid depth. New York only had 16 assists on 41 made FG’s against Denver, a terrible 39% AST-rate. That indicates that they didn’t play a lot of team-basketball, but relied on individual effort to score points. That worked against Denver’s 25th ranked D, but it will be a lot harder against Milwaukee’s.

Sacramento Kings -2.5

I’ve already mentioned this previously when talking about Sacramento, but if this team didn’t blow a 24-point lead @ DAL and a 26-point lead @ MEM, they’d now be 8-2 on the season, tied at the top of all NBA standings with GSW, HOU, and TOR in the loss column, as well as MEM who would have had 2 losses instead of 1. And look at the opponents this team has faced so far: GSW, POR (home win), LAC (road win), PHX (road win), DAL, MEM, SAS (home win). Pelicans have also played well this year, but against top opponents they’ve struggled. They lost to DAL by 5 at home, @ MEM by 12, and @ POR by 9 last night, after giving the game away in the 4th quarter. They did win @ SAS earlier this year by 1 point, but the Spurs were still jelling after a Championship-hangover, and weren’t playing their best ball. The Pellies are on a b2b tonight, losing by 9 @ POR yesterday, after being outscored by 21 in the 4th quarter. Davis, Evans, and Holiday logged 38/39 minutes each, while Ryan Anderson played 36, his season high. Kings have had 2-days off and are fully rested. Sacramento are a dominant rebounding team (#2 in both Offensive and Defensive rebounding rates), and they rank #1 in FT-rate offensively, attacking the basket often and getting to the line. Pellies rank 23rd in defensive FT-rate allowed, and if fatigue is a factor today, as I think it might be, Kings should have some strong advantages in those key areas.

Tuesday’s College Basketball Plays

3-Unit Play. #718 Take Old Dominion (-2) over Richmond (8 p.m., Tuesday, November 18)

The Monarchs went from 5-25 in 2012 to a .500 team this past year. And while four starters back from last season’s bounce back squad, it’s safe to assume more improvement is on the way. I think Richmond is in a bit of transition, certainly a few years removed from their top team. At home I think the home team gets the nod. The Atlantic 10 may be the better conference, but this is an instance that i’ll side with the team from the lesser league, as in this particular match-up, the slight favorite is deserved. Go with ODU to score the victory.

3-Unit Play. #759 Take Murray State (-1.5) over Middle Tennessee State (8 p.m., Tuesday, November 18)

Murray State is arguably the class of the Ohio Valley this season. They have four starters back in addition to a quality transfer from Clemson. For me, the top of a very solid mid-major conference is better than a middle rung C-USA school. And that’s what Middle Tennessee is. They graduated four starters and will undoubtedly suffer a major drop off from their 24-win 2013. Give me Murray State and their more polished squad for this early season match-up.

4-Unit Play. #741 Take Kentucky (-6.5) over Kansas (9:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 18)

I think the Wildcats are going to absolutely smash Kansas here. The fact that Kentucky was slow out of the gate against Buffalo the last time out only enhances how much we like Coach Cal’s team against the Jayhawks. Kansas doesn’t have the weapons to compete with Kentucky, certainly not early in the season when they are still trying to figure out life without Andrew Wiggins and Naadir Thorpe. I think this could be a 15 or 20-point result. Lay the number with the ‘Cats.

NCAAF 7:00 pm Massachusetts at Akron Massachusetts 0 for 5 units
This is a game that isn’t going to get much national attention, but it is an under the radar moneymaker. The numbers tell the story for this one. UMASS is coming into this game with an overall record of 8-2 ATS. As I looked more into that, it stood out how they are undefeated ATS in some key categories (after a win, division, conference). On the contrary, I look at Akron’s records, which are the polar opposite. They are 2-8 overall ATS, as well as 0-6 ATS in divisional and conference games. The only real question mark in this one is UMASS QB Blake Frohnapfel. If he doesn’t go, UMASS will rely on Austin Whipple. When you factor in the QB situation and the frigid night temps, look for UMASS to rely heavily on the run game to prevail. Take UMASS in the point spread.

NCAAB 7:00 pm Michigan State at Duke – Under 144.5 for 3 units
An early big-time college basketball game in most cases equates to many variables. This is a neutral site matchup (Indianapolis), meaning that neither team will have a true home court advantage.
