Larry Ness' 10* MAC Championship Game Showdown (5-1 MAC run!)

My 10* MAC Championship Game Showdown is on Northern Illinois at 7:00 ET.
Northern Illinois came into the 2014 season off years of 11, 11, 12 and 12 wins. With Jordan Lynch gone on offense plus just FIVE returning starters on the defensive side of the ball, head coach Rod Carey (in his second season) knew reaching the heights of the past four years would be a tough task. The Huskies opened the season with the nation's longest active home winning streak at 26 in a row plus also owned the nation's longest road winning streak at 15. First to fall was NIU’s road winning streak (at 17 in a row), when the Huskies lost 52-14 at Arkansas. The Huskies saw their home winning streak end at 28 straight on Oct 11 when Central Michigan won 34-17 in Dekalb.
As the month of November opened, Northern Illinois was 6-2 overall, including 3-1 in MAC play. NIU visited Ball St on Nov 5 and at that time, Toledo was 5-0 in MAC play and Western Michigan sat at 4-1. In order to reach a FIFTH straight MAC title game, NIU needed to “win out.” That’s exactly what happed, as the Huskies won 35-21 at Ball St, 27-24 at home vs Toledo, 21-14 at Ohio and 31-21 at Western Michigan. NIU won SIX in a row following that loss to Central Michigan, giving them a 7-1 record (matching Toledo), earning the West title due to its win over Toledo.
Awaiting NIU in the title game at Ford Field will be Bowling Green, which is just 7-5 overall and in the MUCH weaker MAC East, took that division with a 5-3 league mark. The schools did not meet this year but one can be sure NEITHER team will forget Bowling Green “taking apart” the then-unbeaten Huskies in last year’s MAC title game 47-27, a final which as NOT as close as the score. NIU enters on a SIX-game winning streak while Bowling Green ‘limps’ into the conference championship game having lost its last two contests 27-20 to Toledo and 41-24 to Ball State (BOTH losses coming after the Falcons had secured the MAC East Division).
Northern Illinois QB Drew Hare is NO Jordan Lynch but he owns an 15-1 TD-to-INT ratio and leads the team in rushing with 790 yards (5.9 YPC / 7 TDs). Northern Illinois averages an impressive 246.2 YPG on the ground (5.0 YPC). Bowling Green QB James Knapke completes a modest 57.4% with a 12-10 TD-to-INT ratio and his running games averages about 60 YPG less than NIU’s, at 180.6 YPC on 4.6 YPC. Knapke has filled in after starter Matt Johnson was lost for the year to a hip injury in the season’s first game. One can be assured NIU is happy Johnson isn't available, as he outplayed Jordan Lynch in last year’s title game, topping 400 yards in total offense, completing 21 of 27 passes for 393 yards with five TDs and no INTs.
That loss not only ruined NIU’s perfect season, it cost NIU what was likely a second straight BCS bowl bid. Northern Illinois is a remarkable 38-2 SU in MAC regular season games since the start of the 2010 season, with BOTH losses coming to Central Michigan (in 2014 and 2011). However, in its four previous MAC title games, NIU is just 2-2 SU and 0-4 (or 0-3-1) ATS. NIU has ALL the motivation from last year’s title-game loss plus is playing SOOO much better than BG coming in. In fact, the way the Falcons run defense has played in its last two games vs Toledo and Ball St (524 yards allowed on 5.7 YPC), it seems to spell certain doom vs NIU.
That’s the bet!

Game of the Day: Pac-12 Championship

Arizona Wildcats vs. Oregon Ducks (-14.5, 74.5)

Game to be played at neutral site at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California

Oregon will get another shot at Arizona when the No. 3 Ducks head south to face the No. 8 Wildcats in the Pac-12 championship game Friday night at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Oregon’s last two losses have come against Arizona, most recently Oct. 2 when the visiting Wildcats toppled the heavily favored Ducks 31-24. Arizona earned a berth in the title game after UCLA lost to Stanford on Friday and the Wildcats beat Arizona State shortly afterward.

Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota has been brilliant this season but likely still remembers his two interceptions in last season’s loss to Arizona, which ended a streak of 12 straight games without getting picked off. He has three interceptions overall in his career against the Wildcats, the most against any team. Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon won’t have his best receiver available early in the game as Samajie Grant won’t start after being cited for DUI last weekend.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FOX.

LINE HISTORY: Oregon opened as 13.5-point favorites and have been bet an additional point to the current number of -14.5. The total opened at 72.5 and has moved up two points to sit at 74.5.

INJURY REPORT: Arizona - LB DeAndre Miller (questionable Friday, shoulder), RB Adonis Smith (questionable Friday, concussion), CB Cam Denson (questionable Friday, hip), DL Parker Zellers (questionable Friday, ankle), S Trevor Ermisch (questionable Friday, arm), WR Samajie Grant (out Friday, personal). Oregon - WR Keanon Lowe (probable Friday, undisclosed), TE Evan Baylis (questionable Friday, undisclosed), DL Alex Balducci (questionable Friday, undisclosed), DL Tony Washington (questionable Friday, undisclosed), OL Hroniss Grasu (questionable Friday, leg), RB Thomas Tyner (questionable Friday, ankle).

WEATHER REPORT: It could be a wet one, with a 64 percent chance of rain in the forecast. Temperatures will be in the mid 50's and a mild seven mile per hour wind blowing towards the northwest end zone.

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "One thing is for sure, Arizona wont be intimidated by Oregon's high octane offense, as the Wildcats have already beat the Ducks in their own backyard earlier this season. Arizona also defeated the Ducks in Tuscon in 2013. Thursday morning we got sharp bet on Ducks -13.5 (buying 1/2 point to -120) so we moved Oregon to current number of -14.5. 63 percent of cash & 65 percent of bets on spread are on Arizona." - Mike Jerome.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "Oregon is 0-2 against Arizona over the last two years; the Ducks are 22-1 against everybody else. Arizona won those games by a combined score of 73-40, so it’s not like they were fluky wins. There’s been a major adjustment on the total in this game from the first meeting when the oddsmakers hung an 81.5 Over/Under line. The current total on this game is now a full touchdown less which may prove to be too much of a correction, especially since Oregon's offense is much healthier now than in the earlier meeting this season." - Steve Merril

ABOUT ARIZONA (10-2, 7-2, Pac-12): Solomon seems to be wearing down as his freshman season comes to a close. He hasn’t thrown for more than 250 yards in the last five games after surpassing that mark six times in the first seven games, including 287 passing yards and a touchdown in the first game against the Ducks. While he has been slowing up, freshman running back Nick Wilson has been heating up, rushing for at least 100 yards the last four games and scoring eight touchdowns in the last three.

ABOUT OREGON (11-1, 8-1): With a berth in the first annual College Football Playoff on the line for Oregon, Mariota is expected to get some help at the wide receiver spot as Keanon Lowe is set to return after sitting out the win against Oregon State last week for unknown reasons. Lowe, who missed two games in October with a hamstring injury, is one of six Ducks with at least four touchdown receptions this season. Oregon receiver Devon Allen, the defending NCAA 110 hurdles champion, caught six touchdown passes in the first five games but hasn’t scored since the loss to the Wildcats.

TRENDS:

* Arizona is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
* Oregon is 7-0 ATS in its last seven conference games.
* Under is 4-1 in Arizona's last five games overall.
* Over is 4-0-1 in Oregon's last five games versus a team with a winning record.

CONSENSUS: Over 56.18 percent of wagers are backing Arizona +14.5 with 56.9 percent on the over.

4-Unit Play #105 Take Northern Illinois -6.5 over Bowling Green (Friday @ 7pm est)
Northern Illinois is going to get up for this game in a big way and you have two teamsthat are basically headed in the opposite direction here. What you have here isa NIU team that that is ranked in the top 70 per our power rankings and whohave a great deal of revenge from getting routed by Bowling Green State lastyear who will look to get some revenge here. Note that this team just beat atop 85 team in Western Michigan on the road by 10 points and now hook with atop 110 team with revenge who comes into this game stumbling. And to NIU’scredit they have only lost to Arkansas and fell short of course CentralMichigan earlier this year and that were their only struggles. Bowling Greenhas had its issues against quality teams in conference and in particular asthey hook up with a top 70 team here they have shown tendencies to struggleagainst caliber teams such as losing to top 125 Ball State by 17 points andlosing to top 80 Toledo by 7 points on the road. In fact, outside of theIndiana win, this team has not beat a top 100 team all year and with NorthernIllinois seeking revenge and BGSU losing 3 of their last 5 coming into thisgame, let’s go with the motivated team that is expecting to do well withrevenge here.

That was the 4th consecutive season in which NIU played for the MAC title (under 3 different coaches, Kill, Doeren, and now 2nd year HC Carey). The results have not been pretty with NIU going 2-2 SU but 0-4 ATS. This year, however, the situation and the numbers clearly favor N. Illinois to cover the number in this Championship game. Under 1st year HC Babers, Bowling Green has suffered an immense defensive decline. Last year, the Falcons allowed just 16 PPG on 321 YPG. This year, BG allows 33 PPG and 495 YPG. Look no further than the fact that Babers is an offensive-minded coach, who is responsible, in part, for creating the high-powered Baylor attack prior to leading FCS E. Illinois to 48 PPG last season. Bowling Green plays in the relatively weak MAC East. The West was 15-3 SU vs. the East this year. When Bowling Green stepped up to play teams from the West, they lost 26-14 at home to Western, 27-20 at injured-Toledo team and 41-24 at home to Ball St. Those last two games concluded their season on a 0-2 SU ATS slide. Perennial champion NIU is at the peak of their game. They enter with 5 consecutive wins, including closing the season with wins over their closest division challengers, Toledo and W. Michigan. In last week’s 31-21 victory at Western, the Huskies held a dominant 196-91 overland edge and forced 6 TOs. The QB play clearly favors the Huskies as well. QB Knapke is a far less dynamic performer for Bowling Green than is QB Hare for NIU. With a 15/1 ratio, Hare not only takes care of the ball in the air, but is a dual threat with his legs. Combined with a stable of healthy RBs, NIU has a clear QB edge, the more explosive balanced offense, the far superior defense and a championship pedigree which will lead them to this double-digit victory.

7-Unit Play. Take #810 Toronto (-4) over Cleveland (7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5)

This one is a blowout! Toronto is one of the best teams in basketball and they are one of the best teams at home in the NBA. They are going to be very excited about Lebron James coming to town. The Cavs are not going to be excited after playing in New York City last night. I had this spread as -7 and I think it is short. The Raptors blew out the Cavaliers in the first matchup back on Nov. 22. That game was in Cleveland and Toronto won by 17! They are even better at home with the crowd behind them. The Raptors had last night off while the Cavs had to hold off the Knicks and Cleveland is just 3-6 ATS in its last nine games. I love this matchup and I like this number. I have my money down on Toronto for a big win.

3-Unit Play. Take #803 Oklahoma City (-12.5) at Philadelphia (7:00 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5)

Kevin Durant returned on Tuesday, scored 27 points, looked like the MVP he is, and the thunder lost. The Thunder are in Philly tonight which is the first of 4 against the Eastern Conference. Great time for the Sixers to be on the schedule for OKC. They have beaten Philly 10 straight times, are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings in the city of brotherly love, and 6-0 ATS overall in their last 6 against the 76ers. Oklahoma City had had 3 days to get some things ironed out and should be at full strength for only the second time this season. Their 5-13 record is about to start looking a lot different. Philadelphia is riding high after winning their first game on Wednesday in Minnesota. They most definitely circled the Minnesota game as one they could get so a letdown tonight is inevitable. Michael Carter-Williams and KJ McDaniels have played great in the last couple weeks and should continue to get heavy minutes moving forward. Philly avoided setting a record with a win against the Twolves but they won't be able to avoid their 11th straight home loss tonight becoming the first team to do so since the 2003-04 Magic. The Thunder are going to start to roll and tonight is the first step. Lay the points. Take OKC and Durant.

2-Unit Play. Take 'Under' 207.5 Cleveland at Toronto (7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5)

When the Raptors took down the Cavs a couple weeks ago it was Cleveland's 4th loss a row and their fans were in full panic mode. 5 wins in a row and that panic is gone. This is shaping up to be an Eastern Conference finals preview, with apologies to the Wiz, which a lot of experts saw coming from the start of the season. The Raps are scoring at an alarming rate of 109.7 points per game, good for 2nd in the NBA, and the Cavs are just outside of the top 10 (11th) with 102.9. Both teams do a pretty good job holding teams under the century mark on the defensive end and the total has been under in 20 of the last 26 games in Toronto. This is Lebron and company's 3rd game in 4 nights and the Knicks gave them all they could handle last night so they are going to be a little tired. Toronto hasn't played since disposing of the Jazz and Kings earlier in the week so they will be happy to be home. It isn't going to be a surprise if both teams come out with something to prove and this will definitely be a battle until the final horn. Both teams will get enough stops to keep each other under 100. Raptors 99-90.

2-Unit Play. Take #802 Washington (-4) over Denver (7:00 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5)

The Wiz are on their 4th game of a 4 game homestand and have gone 3-0 so far. They are going to give a great effort tonight to try and finish this stand right at 4-0. Bradley Beal looks to be fully healed from early season dings and has been playing at a very high level. Teaming him with the constant John Wall and Marcin Gortat combo Washington is looking like a top 3 Eastern Conference team. The biggest reason for their success has been improved defense holding opponents to 87 ppg. Denver dropped a heart breaker on Tuesday to Portland 105-103. They have really righted the ship since starting the season 1-6 and have a record of 9-9. They have had their struggles against Washington going 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings overall and 1-4 in their last 5 meetings in DC. This should be an entertaining game to watch and hsoul dbe competitive until the end. The Wizards will have enough to hold off the nuggets here. Washington 100-92.

3-Unit Play. #811. Take Over 217.5 – LA Lakers vs. Boston Celtics (Friday @ 7:35pm est)

Can this line get big enough? We roll with the Over here and try to seek going 17-5, 11-3 and 8-2 over our last series of selections. We love it when Kobe visits the Garden simply because it makes for great television and basketball. Such is the case here with the rivarly that exists between Kobe and Rondo as they are not fans of each other and this should be fun to see the old guards or the ones that remain from that series hook up here. Note that the public is actually on the Under in this game but with the rivalry that exists between these two teams, and an east/west tilt as well, don’t be surprised if it likely goes over the posted total this evening. Note the Over is 6-1 for the Lakers following a straight up loss of more than 10 points and the Over is 10-1 for the Celtics when they hook up with teams with a winning percentage of less than 40% overall as well. We like the fact that Boston is a small favorite here as it allows the Lakers to be active underdogs to boot as well. Note, the Over is 4-1 over the last 5 meetings between these two squads and we have this contest at over 220 points this evening.

Write up:
Washington’s last game against the LA Lakers showed that the Wizards also know how to play on run and gun style. They were coming from three super slow paced games, but they had no problems in adapting to a faster pace by dominating the paint and shooting decently as well from the perimeter. Of course they were facing the lowly Lakers on a back to back spot for them, but Washington still did what they had to do in that game.
The Wizards will now host Denver in an exciting contest. This should also be another nice match up for the Wizards’ offense. This is because Denver has zero help defense, with their undersized PF’s getting outplayed on defense time and time again, with everybody looking lost on the defensive rotations. This was the main reason why Aldridge absolutely crushed them on the Nuggets’ last game. This also means that with Wall attacking off dribble, this will attract a lot of Nuggets into closing down Wall’s drive to the basket, which will leave an open Wizards player time and time again for an easy score.
On the other hand, Washington’s defense is coming from two games against Miami and the Lakers, two jump shooting teams who aren’t aggressive at the rim. This was why the Wizards allowed just 36 and 20 points in the paint in those games. However, things will be very different today against Denver, a much more aggressive team in attacking the rim and in fact, Washington’s rim defense isn’t that good with 63.5% FG allowed. Therefore, I see both teams having relevant edges on offense on this match up and so, I’ll take the Over in here
