4 Unit Play. #245 Take Louisville Cardinals +6.5 over Georgia Bulldogs

(Belk Bowl, Tuesday 12/30 6:30 pm ESPN)

The Bulldogs get a bunch of hype every year but they fail to live up to that hype each and every season. We will gladly take the points in this game since Louisville has a better defense and a better coach in Bobby Petrino. Injuries have taken its toll of this team as Georgia averaged just 455 yards per game and that should be even lower tonight against Louisville. The Cardinals offense is not on the same level as their defense but they have been much better with return of WR DeVante Parker. He has 35 catches in five games and should have his way against the Georgia defense. Louisville is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against SEC teams and they are also 4-1 ATS in their last 5 bowl games. Louisville has a good chance to win this game straight-up and getting this many points is just icing on the cake.

3 Unit Play. #247 Take Maryland Terrapins +14 over Stanford Cardinal

(Foster Farms Bowl, Tuesday 12/30 10 pm ESPN)

We will grab the points in this match-up of 7-5 teams, as the Cardinal had one of the most disappointing season in the entire country. Both teams have bad losses on their resumes, but I just believe that Maryland is more excited about this game than is Stanford. The Cardinal have had trouble scoring points in the redzone this season and Coach Shaw is just 1-2 in bowl games (was favored in all three games). Stanford has played in four consecutive BSC Bowls and Maryland has a good quarterback in CJ Brown, who threw 19 touchdowns on the season. Stanford scored just 26 points per game this season and we will grab the two touchdowns in this contest. Stanford is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games against teams with a winning record.

LSU -7.5, 53
12/30/2014 3:00 PM
SELECTION:
LSU -7.5

Notre Dame is going to give Malik Zaire his first start in a monster bowl game against a nasty defense because Golson has been turning the ball over too much. I don’t know if putting a guy in with no experience is the answer. This team returned 3 starters on the offensive line this year so you would think they would be OK, but have allowed so many sacks. One of those 3 starters will be out of this game today. LSU has a few guys that can run the football and they are going to grind it out and make this thin defense very tired. Notre Dame has no depth and their linebackers are very inexperienced. This spread seems high, but in the final frame LSU will break that big run or two to blow this game open. Take LSU.

Louisville vs Georgia
Georgia -7, 58

SELECTION:
LOUISVILLE +7
GEORGIA /LOUISVILLE UNDER 58

A lot of people don’t realize who good this Cardinals Defense is. 11 of the 12 starters are juniors and seniors and this team can play with any offense in the country. We know that Georgia is going to run the ball so it is no secret. Mason is a good quarterback, but he is not lights out and this team will run the ball first and foremost. The same can be said with Louisville as we don’t even know which QB will start this game. This is a veteran Louisville Football team that can play with anyone in the country when their defense is playing high level football. The total in this game is massive and with both teams pounding the rock this clock should move fast. Georgia’s Offensive Coordinator has bolted to another school so they will have a new play caller in this game. Georgia changed their defensive formation this year and have been hot a cold at times. I think this is a game in which Louisville can dominate on defense and have a shot to win. Take Louisville and the Under.

Maryland vs Stanford
Stanford -14, 47.5
12/30/2014 10:00 PM
SELECTION:
MARYLAND +14

I don’t know why this spread is so high. Stanford is awful in the redzone and their best player Montgomery is not playing in this game. Maryland has an underrated defense and are packed themselves with juniors and seniors. I just don’t see how Stanford is such a big favorite in a bad bowl game when they are used to playing in meaningful ones. Maryland has a duel threat QB which will be a different look to this Stanford Defense. Maryland has good skilled players, a great coach and a senior quarterback. This team is very capable of pulling an upset tonight. This is just too many points and Maryland would have to turn the ball over a few times for points to not cover this game. This is as underrated as a team as you will see. Take Maryland.

PERFECT PLAY---NOTRE DAME

Notre Dame started the season 6-0 and there was plenty of talk about the Fighting Irish qualifying for a spot in the first College Football Playoff. Defense was the major issue down the stretch. Notre Dame surrendered an average of 41.3 points a game over their final six games. Senior QB Everett Golson was outstanding this season, throwing for 3355 yards and 29 touchdowns. For the season, Notre Dame ranks 16th in passing offense, 83rd in rushing offense, and 41st in scoring offense at 33 points per game.
The LSU Tigers knew coming into this season that they were probably a year away from competing for an SEC Title. The Tigers were very young this season, especially at the skill positions. Sophomore QB Anthony Jennings struggled to read defenses while throwing for 1460 yards to go along with ten touchdowns and seven interceptions. Jennings only topped 200 yards in passing once this season. Freshman RB Leonard Fournette led LSU in rushing with 891 yards and eight touchdowns. For the season, LSU ranked 116th in passing offense, 29th in rushing offense, and 75th in scoring offense at 27.6 points per game. Not impressive numbers. Brian Kelly and his Fighting Irish squad have a lot to prove after the way they finished the season. I think defensively they can be better against an LSU attack that will likely come straight ahead. Look for Everett Golson to be the difference and spring Notre Dame to the outright win. TAKE NOTRE DAME

INNER CIRCLE--LOUISVILLE

Head coach Mark Richt has done a fine job leading his Bulldogs to another successful season despite their many injuries. Georgia had the talent to win the SEC East, but the suspension and then season ending injury to RB Todd Gurley put an end to that possibility. True freshman RB Nick Chubb stepped up in Gurley’s absence and ran for 1281 yards and 12 touchdowns. Senior QB Hutson Mason does a good job managing the offense and limiting his mistakes. He has thrown for 20 touchdowns and just four interceptions on the season. For the season, Georgia ranks 88th in passing offense, 13th in rushing offense, and 8th in scoring offense at 41.7 points per game. The Louisville Cardinals enjoyed an outstanding season after the departure of QB Teddy Bridgewater to the NFL. Head coach Bobby Petrino was brought back for a second stint, after Charlie Strong bolted Louisville for the greener pastures of Texas. Louisville fans were hoping Petrino could bring back the kind of offensive success he experienced previously. However, it was the Cardinals’ defense that was the story this year. Senior WR DeVante Parker is Louisville’s most dynamic offensive threat. After missing the first seven games due to injury, Parker returned to catch 35 passes for 735 yards and five touchdowns over the last five weeks of the season. Louisville ranks 6th in total defense and allow an average of 20.5 points. Georgia will have no answer for Parker and meanwhile the Cardinal defense will get things done. TAKE LOUISVILLE

PERFECT PLAY--MISSISSIPPI STATE; Bowl Favorite of Year

On New Year’s Eve, the 7th ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs will tangle with the 12th ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the Capitol One Orange Bowl. Mississippi State made great strides this season and spent a couple of weeks as the #1 team in the country. However, losses at Alabama and Ole Miss in their final three games took away their chance of competing in the inaugural College Football Playoffs. The Bulldogs are led on offense by junior QB Dak Prescott. Prescott threw for almost 3,000 yards and rushed for nearly 1,000 to go along with 37 total touchdowns. Junior RB Josh Robinson amassed 1128 rushing yards and scored 11 touchdowns to compliment their offense. For Georgia Tech, they played their game against Florida St and came up short. Georgia Tech ranks 65th in total defense and allow an average of 25.1 points per game. Expect plenty of points and in this high scoring affair, the favorite will cover. TAKE MISS ST

This year’s Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl will feature and exciting matchup between the Ole Miss Rebels and TCU Horned Frogs.
Ole Miss started the season 7-0 and looked poised to be one of the four playoff teams in College Football’s inaugural playoff. Unfortunately, three straight SEC losses at the hands of LSU, Auburn, and Arkansas derailed the Rebels chances. The play that defined the season for Ole Miss was when WR LaQuon Treadwell appeared to have scored the go ahead touchdown late against Auburn. However, replay determined that he fumbled the ball before crossing the goal line and was lost for the season with a leg injury on the play. For the season, Ole Miss ranks 31st in passing offense, 60th in rushing offense, and 57th in scoring offense. The TCU Horned Frogs were the darlings of college football in many ways this season. TCU featured a new and exciting spread attack on offense that resulted in lots of points. Junior QB Trevone Boykin leads the offense with 3714 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. Boykin is a duel-threat QB that rushed for 642 yards and eight touchdowns as well. TCU was crowned co-champions of the Big 12 with Baylor, despite losing 61-58 to the Bears in the middle of the season. In the end, the playoff selection committee gave the nod to Ohio State over TCU and Baylor for the fourth and final playoff spot. Emotionally this will not bode well for TCU. Look for the Ole Miss defense to be able to stop TCU's offense. TAKE MISSISSIPPI.

ROBERT FERRINGO (Bowl Game)

8-Unit Play. Take #245 Louisville (+7) over Georgia (6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30)
Note: This is the Belk Bowl and from the KING System.

There is a lot at work here. But the fact is that I love the Cardinals and Bobby Petrino in the underdog role. Petrino is one of those guys that it is always dangerous to lay points to and I think that Louisville is going to win this game outright. They have by far the better defense in this game and I think with a month to prep that Petrino will have his offense humming along. The Bulldogs defense has been incredibly streaky this year and you never know which group is going to show up. The Bulldogs started the season with hopes of winning the SEC and I don’t think that they care much about this bowl game. Petrino cares, not only because he wants to make a splash in his first year back at Louisville but also because he has no love for anything Atlanta after his horrid time with the Falcons.

Perhaps the biggest angle at play here is that Louisville defensive coordinator Todd Grantham was the DC at Georgia for four years before he was unceremoniously released. He recruited every player on that UGA defense and knows the strengths and weaknesses of every player on that Bulldogs roster. Again, with a month to prep that is a huge advantage for the former Georgia coach.

On top of that, Georgia lost its offensive coordinator, Mike Bobo, when Bobo took the Colorado State job. Bobo also took a couple UGA coordinators with him (though they will be coaching the bowl game) and I just wonder where this team’s focus is right now.

I think that Louisville is going to come to play here and I think they will do some things to give Georgia problems. I see this as a lower scoring bowl game and a close one at that, played in the 20’s. I think Louisville wins this game and the points are good here.

OC Dooley:2 UNIT” LATE NIGHT COLLEGE FOOTBALL INJURY INTANGIBLE SIDE (Maryland +14 versus Stanford in a 10:10 eastern late night kickoff on ESPN): The Foster Farms Bowl is being played just 11 miles from Stanford’s campus on the home turf of the NFL San Francisco 49ers. Thus even though both of tonight’s participants have identical overall records (7-5) it is the Cardinal who have been cast as a prohibitive two touchdown favorite. One of the keys to this selection has to do with POSITIVE injury news regarding Maryland’s #1 wide receiving option who actually has a shot at soon cashing NFL paychecks. Stefon Diggs has bene sidelined ever since suffering a lacerated kidney in a game played way back on the first day of November. To make a long story short Diggs (52 receptions and 5 touchdowns in just nine games played) says that he quote “feels fresh” which means that his Maryland teammates will ultimately benefit from an “extended” break which sees the team taking the field right near the New Years holiday. For those not aware this marked Maryland’s first campaign as a member of the Big 10 conference which also was the case for Rutgers who earlier in the postseason won OUTRIGHT as a substantial underdog versus an opponent (North Carolina) from a “power” conference. While late tonight is essentially an added “home” game for Stanford they have actually taken a large step “down” in prestige which brings to question their overall motivation. After winning consecutive Pac-12 Conference championships and the two separate Rose Bowl appearances that went with it, the Cardinal are taking a massive step “down” to a Bowl game being sponsored by Foster Farms. During the regular season among all Pac-12 alligned schools it was Stanford who had the LOWEST ranked offense (per game averages of below 26 points and 387 yards gained per game). Thus despite the geographic advantage I argue that Stanford should not be laying this many points

Detroit Pistons -1

Pistons are 0-8 ATS as a ‘favorite’ this year but this is the first time they’re listed as such in the post-Josh Smith era. I know it’s been two games only, but since Smith was released by the team, Detroit is averaging 118 Off-Efficiency and 100 Def-Efficiency for a net of +18 efficiency-differential. Prior to that, they had a 101 OffRtg and 108 DefRtg for a -7 efficiency-differential in the 28 games with Smith. Again, the sample size is tiny so we can’t draw any ‘definitive’ conclusions yet, but it’s pretty clear that the team is playing its ‘best’ ball of the year right now. Meeks has strengthen the second unit, Brandon Jennings is actually looking like an ‘NBA’ PG again, and the combo of Drummond and Monroe are playing much more efficient game than when Smith was on the floor. Tonight Detroit takes on an Orlando squad that has beaten them earlier this season. This is a ‘revenge’ game for the Pistons and I like their chances of a strong effort. At the same time, Magic are coming off a huge upset win @ Miami last night. A number of their key guys logged heavy minutes in that one, but more importantly, they logged minutes in a number high-leverage situations through the 4th quarter. Typically a young team has a hard time maintaining that kind of an effort from game to game, and after such a hard fought road win I expect a let-down out of Orlando. This is also a b2b game for them and 4th in 5 nights, so fatigue clearly could be an issue. Detroit ranks 8th in TO-rate while Orlando is 24th, with this discrepancy being potentially larger tonight in a tough physical spot for the Magic. In addition, Orlando ranks 29th in ORB-rate and 30th in offensive FT-rate. “Easy” buckets from put-backs or from the charity stripe, are going to be tough to come by in this one and for Magic to win the game they’ll have to be very efficient from the floor offensively. Hard to see that happening in a tough spot like tonight. There are a lot of elements that favor Detroit in tonight’s game and situationally this is a great spot to back them. This might be one of my favorite plays this year so far.

Cleveland Cavaliers +4.5

In the first meeting with ATL, Cavs were ‘ridiculous’ from the floor offensively and blew away the Hawks by 33 points. In the 2nd meeting, ATL returned the favor, shooting 65% from the field and blowing out the Cavs by 29 points. Is this Cleveland’s turn to now go off offensively and win by double-digits or are we actually going to see a close game in this series? I think we’ll see a close game. Everyone knows that the Cavs haven’t jelled yet and have played some uninspiring ball this season. Well, if a 23-point home beat-down at the hands of a 6-23 (7-23 now) Detroit team doesn’t “inspire” you, then I don’t know what will. It’s time for Cavs’ players to ‘put up or shut up’ as they say, and to play with as much energy and intensity as at any point this season. It seems like this team is on a brink of something, either totally falling apart or on a brink of coming together. I’m betting on the latter. It’s LeBron’s 30th birthday today and I would expect him to come out with an aggressive mindset here. Kyrie Irving is back, so expect him to put forth a strong effort as well. And I also expect a strong effort from Kevin Love, who is facing an ATL team that is one of the weaker rebounding teams in the league. This is one of those games where the loss of Varejao won’t be as pronounced, as Atlanta ranks 20th in rebounding rate and 30th on the offensive glass. Expect Love, Thompson, and James to do a good job of controlling the glass in this one. Finally, I want to point out that the first two games between these two teams took place in Cleveland, and the Cavs were -7 point home favorites in each. With standard home/away adjustments, this line should be around -1/PK CLE tonight. Well, the Cavs are actually catching more than two buckets here as I believe we’re seeing an over-adjustment by the Bookmaker (http://www.bookmaker.eu)s. I’ll back the Cavs in this one as I think they’ll come out with a lot of urgency tonight.

Minnesota Timberwolves +6.5

The worst team (MIN) in the West is taking on the 3rd worst team (UTA) in the conference here. The difference though is that Utah is on a b2b and playing their 3rd game in 4 nights. They’re coming off a very competitive game @ LA yesterday, a game they lost by only 4 points. Favors and Hayward played 35+ minutes in that one while Burke logged 32. Alec Burks is still out and though he’s not a difference-maker per say, his absence hurts Utah’s depth, which is already one of the worst in the league ranking 29th in scoring. Minnesota has had 2 days to rest and prepare for this one and should be much fresher. Minnesota ranks 6th defensively in forcing TO’s, while Utah ranks 22nd in offensive TO-rate. That could very well be the difference in this one. Tonight is the last game of Minnesota’s 4-game roadie. They are 2-0 ATS in the last 2 games, and I expect a strong effort again tonight to try and secure one win on this trip.

Los Angeles Lakers +6

I hate this LA team but two factors in this one made them backable to me. When Kobe Bryant returned from this 3-game absence, he only attempted 10 shots and dished out 7 assists. Is he becoming more of a ‘team player’? Possibly. In addition, Kobe is going to be limited going forward to around 30 minutes per game. I’d like to see that number even lower, but at the very least we’ll know that he should be ‘fresher’ throughout. Lakers beat the Warriors and almost won @ Dallas without Kobe, so clearly Bryant might have gotten the message. Denver is the 4th worst team in the Western Conference and I believe they’re laying too many points here. I have this game at -4.7 Denver, and I think LA has a good shot to play a competitive game here.

FYI:

LeBron James will not play Tuesday against the Atlanta Hawks because of soreness in his left knee, according to Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt.

James already missed one game this season because of the injury -- a marquee matchup against Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder -- and now will miss the chance to play on his 30th birthday.

Blatt said James' status is day-to-day moving forward. The Cavs host the Bucks on Wednesday.

Forward Shawn Marion, who turned his left ankle in the Cavs' loss to the Detroit Pistons, is also out against the Hawks, according to Blatt.

There is some good news for Cleveland, though, as point guard Kyrie Irving confirmed that he'll return to action Tuesday night after missing two games with a bone bruise in his left knee.
