A lot of this write-up will be similar to our selection with Florida State a week and a half ago. First, Ohio State needs to stabilize the game early, which Florida State did. Second, they need to not self-destruct, which Florida State did not. I still believe that if Ohio State can keep this game close into the fourth quarter they will win it straight-up. Oregon played outstanding in the second half against Florida State, but that was a semi-final game, and this program has never won any championships in football and I still believe their coach is nowhere near on the same level as Urban Meyer. Granted if Oregon cracks it up early and Ohio State is playing from behind this could get ugly, but I just do not see that happened for a second straight game.

The Ducks put on an impressive offensive display in the Rose Bowl, hanging 59 points on Florida State. However, Oregon benefited from sloppy play from the Seminoles and had a ton of extra whacks at the piñata. The Seminoles were deflated after each turnover and their defense constantly marched back on the field after the quick giveaways. 2. Oregon’s defense deserves a lot of the credit for that Rose Bowl win. The Ducks, who rank 16th in total yards allowed at 333.4 yards per game, didn’t let FSU find its rhythm on offense. Oregon’s lightning-quick defense sacked Jameis Winston twice and pressured him numerous other times, forcing the former Heisman winner to throw one interception and fumble for an Oregon touchdown – one of four forced fumbles from the Ducks. 3. Both teams will try to establish the run in the national title game. The Ducks marched for 301 yards on 45 carries against FSU while Ohio State ran for 281 yards on 42 attempts. These offenses are rooted in the run, and the defenses don’t give up much of the ground either. Ohio State allows just 3.9 yards per carry while Oregon budges for 4.1 yards per run. The Buckeyes stop unit has been especially stingy on third downs, allowing opponents to convert just 35.5 percent of their third down attempts, including shutting down Alabama to just 2 for 13 on third downs in the Sugar Bowl.

No matter what else is being said about tonight's Oregon vs Ohio State match-up, this is a major event in college sports. It is result of the very first College Football Playoff National Championship. Even fans of Alabama and Florida State have nothing to complain about. The buildup to Ducks versus Bucks has been over-the-top. Every aspect has, and will continue to be covered all evening. The Ducks will be wearing grey uniforms. (Not green?). The fact is there is one common opponent to look at, and they are the Spartans of Michigan State. Back in the second week of the season Oregon defeated Michigan State in Oregon by a 46-27 score. The Buckeyes prevailed 49-37, winning by 12 on the road. These are two teams who earned their way into this game by surprising their semi-final competitors. Oregon blew out Florida State and Ohio State surprised Alabama with a quarterback making his second start. This is simply a game that the "Powers that Be" would not have allowed a year ago. The Ducks have Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota behind center who has thrown for over 4,100 yards. The Buckeyes will have third stringer Cardale Jones who has tossed for just over 600. These teams have heart and this game has some very dramatic elements. It will make for great television and a terrific first ever College Football Championship. Best of all it will be decided on the field. College football fans should savor and enjoy this playoff finale that took far too long to occur. As far as one question that will be answered tonight is that Oregon is a favorite by 6 points after losing their 2 best wide receivers. Why? Most bettors are handicapping that loss along with the legend of Urban Meyer. But the Vegas Oddsmakers are standing their ground undaunted. Public money has pushed this line off the key -7 and that tips the scale for us. Oregon was going to be the play at -7 and now having to lay less than a TD has me running to take the Ducks that much more. The Heisman winner Mariotta will slice and dice the vulnerable secondary of Ohio State while the super fast defense of Oregon shuts down the Buckeyes.

Same analysis as before with this team. They are the most improved team in the league right now going 8-1 since Josh Smith’s release. Detroit’s only loss was a 3-point game against the East leading Hawks. Toronto finally broke their 4-game slide, coming into this matchup off a win. This is a great offensive team but they rank 22nd in DefEff and 23rd in eFG%-allowed. Detroit can definitely take advantage here with their inside-outside game, as I believe they’re a tough team for the Raptors to guard. I expect a close game here with the Pistons once again having a strong shot at a win

My final pick of the college football season goes tonight with a big 5* play on Oregon. I realize that the Oregon defense is nothing to write home about. I don't care, they'll make enough stops. And I know that Carrington tested positive for that nasty killer-drug marijuana and won't play (a college kid smoking pot, must be a first.) I don't care, next man up. All this has been figured into the pointspread. Systems, angles, trends, and power ratings are for suckers and have absolutely no relevance in trying to determine the pointspread winner of any football game. So where did this pick come from? I live on the west coast and have had the opportunity to watch Oregon play all year. The offense is unstoppable. It's not all about Mariota, they can also run with Freeman who should be a big factor in this game. Elliott's going to get his yards for Ohio but I see Oregon getting out to an early lead, Ohio St. will abandon the run and try to rely on the passing of a 3rd string QB on the biggest stage of his young life. Granted he's looked real good the last couple games, but I just don't see that continuing tonight. I think Oregon will be able to get to him and the kid will get rattled into a few mistakes. Now, is this pick a lock? Of course not, there's no such thing, it's just a 5* play. It's just my opinion, that's all, a hunch. That's all any of this is.
