2* Premium Best Bet: North Dakota +8.5 over N. Colorado

Last of the ugly dogs for this season, as I throw this angle out after the regular season, it's not reliable in the league tourneys. Magic number for favorites outside my top 200 is 7.5, and with Northern Colorado actually outside the top 250 and laying a bit more than that, it's just an auto-take on the dog. This is it for North Dakota as the Fighting Sioux won't make the Big Sky tournament. The logical thought is that these teams wave the white flag, and some have. But I've done a little research on this specific to the Big Sky and actually the teams with nothing to play for have done okay in these finales. Fits on the angle, it's also road dog revenge from an OT home loss. They're terrible, but i'm taking North Dakota here as a 2* best bet.

6 Unit Play. #546 Take Oklahoma -5.5 over Kansas (4 pm ESPN)

7 Unit Play. #629 Take Iowa State -3.5 over TCU (8:30 pm ESPN News) Big XII Game of the Year
Write-ups

6 Unit Play. #546 Take Oklahoma -5.5 over Kansas (4 pm ESPN) I will not mention the Kansas players names (bad luck on Tuesday) but the Jayhawks are undermanned for this game against a team that is angry about their performance Monday night. Kansas has already clinched the Big 12 Regular Season Title and thus this game does not mean anything to them. They would need a miracle to move up to the No. 1 line come selection Sunday and they are pretty much entrenched as a No. 2 seed. Oklahoma blew a big lead against Iowa State on Monday night and this is a game they need to get back on track. OU is still playing for a No. 2 seed and they will send out their seniors in style. Kansas has not covered a game in their last five games. Oklahoma is 20-8 ATS (1 push) in their last 29 Saturday games.

7 Unit Play. #629 Take Iowa State -3.5 over TCU (8:30 pm ESPN News) Big XII Game of the Year. I believe that the Cyclones have underachieved a little bit in a very tough conference but I fully expect them to close out the season with two straight wins. Iowa State is riding high all week after coming back from a 20 point deficit to beat Oklahoma on Monday. TCU has improved this season but they are not ready to compete in the Big 12 where they are just 4-13. That includes a 7 game losing streak in January. Granted they have hung tough in many of these games but eventually losing takes its toll on them and they are ready for this season to end. The Cyclones won the first meeting of the season by 17 points and TCU is just 1-10 against ranked opponents this season. Iowa State has won all five meetings conference match-ups with TCU by double digits. Throw in the fact that TCU does not play on campus this season due to renovations to Daniel-Meyer Coliseum and thus much of their home court edge is lost since this game is being played at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center. Iowa State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against teams with a winning record. I see Iowa State winning this game and that should mean the odds greatly favor us in covering the spread.

Welcome to Ecks & Bacon for Saturday, March 7, 2015 (aka Chalk/Benjamin Lee Eckstein)

St. Bonaventure -9
Providence -2
Oklahoma -4
Richmond -15
Wyoming +2-

Taking you to upstate New York, to the town of Allegany, which is next door to Olean, or just a snowball or two away from Buffalo, and using St. Bonaventure -9 points over Fordham. Nothing against Allegany, Olean or Buffalo, but no one wants to go up there and play the Bonnies, especially since they have CRUSHED the last two times out. St. Bonny just beat Saint Louis, 64-48, and the prior game, SMOKED Duquesne, 92-75. The very same Duquesne team that just rocked Fordham, 81-66, this past Wednesday night. And this flock of Rams from NYC are VERY meek on the road, losing 10 of the last 11, so gimme half a Benjamin on the Bonnies.

And for your wagering pleasure, we also like Providence -2 points over Butler, Oklahoma -4 points against Kansas, Richmond -15 points over Saint Louis and Wyoming +2.5 points against New Mexico. Throw another half a Benj on each of these games.

Davidson @ DUQUESNE
#614 DUQUESNE +8 -110 over Davidson
7:00 pm EST. The betting public is paying attention to this sport right now more than any other sport in preparation for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Because of that, there are some market overreactions and we trust we've found another one here. You see, Davidson was on the bubble this past Thursday when they were a -3 point choice at home over VCU. That game was not only senior day, but the Wildcats tournament life was on the line. Well, Davidson brought it big time and buried the Rams 82-55 in a game that was seen on ESPN by millions. From the opening tip to the final buzzer, the Wildcats dominated play in what was their biggest regular season game and victory in years. That win got them into the Dance and they still might be celebrating. Not only is this a huge letdown spot for the visitors, you will pay a premium to wager on them here after that convincing and resounding win over a team that is as highly regarded as VCU.

Meanwhile, the Dukes of Duquesne are just 6-11 in the A-10 and 11-17 overall and this one has an eerily similar feel to an earlier conference game that the Dukes were involved in. You see, Dayton is the conference leader that buried the Dukes on January 3, 81-55. In the rematch game back at Duquesne on February 21, the Dukes were an 8-point home dog and defeated the Flyers by 10. Well, these Dukes lost at Davidson back on February 21 by the exact same 26 points that they lost at Dayton by and now they're getting the same amount of points that Dayton was spotting when they lost by 10. The Dukes have won four straight at home and have not lost by this margin at home in 11 straight. They are a sound offensive team that ranks high (top-91 or better) in every key offensive category. Davidson didn't have any trouble in the first meeting with that aforementioned 95-69 drubbing of the Dukes but like many other teams, Duquesne is so much better at home and they catch the complacent Wildcats in an extremely unfavorable spot here.

NOTE: Lots of different lines showing up on this one so our recommendation would be to take nothing lower than +7. In other words, +7 or more.

Our Pick
#614 DUQUESNE +8 -110 (Risking 2.2 units - To Win: 2.00)

Xavier @ CREIGHTON
#550 CREIGHTON +128 over Xavier
2:00 PM EST. Xavier has a lot of good wins this year and so Joe Lunardi's “Bracketology” has them as a sure thing to get into the Dance. The Musketeers are 8-9 in the conference and 18-12 overall. Xavier will not improve or hurt their conference tournament seed no matter what happens in this game but we're not as convinced as Lunardi that they're a “sure thing” to get in. We're not even convinced that the Musketeers are better than Creighton. Xavier has lost two straight, one at home to Villanova by 12 and at St. John's, which is no big deal, but they've also lost to Seton Hall recently and are just 4-5 over its past nine games. In fact, Xavier has lost twice to the Johnnies recently. When the Musketeers hosted these Bluejays on February 4, they were a 13-point choice and lost outright in OT. Many folks attribute that to Xavier overlooking the Bluejays but we're not buying that argument for a second. Xavier has had trouble with plenty of teams this year, which includes straight up losses to Long Beach and UTEP. They do some things well but they are very flawed in many areas in which the Bluejays exploited once and can definitely do again here.

We mentioned yesterday how the market puts so much emphasis on W/L records and once again we'll look to take advantage of that market flaw. Creighton is 4-13 in the Big East and 13-17 overall. That record has them perceived as a weaker team but nothing could be further from the truth. Creighton isn't going to the dance but a few breaks and they'd be in the conversation and would be one of those teams that nobody wants to play. We all knew the losses of Doug McDermott and Grant Gibbs were going to have a big impact on Creighton. Coupled with a host of key injuries, the Bluejays didn't stand much of a chance in the ultra-competitive Big East. It wasn't until late January that they recorded their first conference win, but since then we've seen positive signs. They beat St. John's and Xavier and got a nice spread-covering win over Marquette. And it's important to note that while Creighton's conference record says 4-13, the Bluejays were right there in a number of games, with five losses that came down to the final possession, not to mention a recent four-point loss to a powerful Villanova squad. This is a well-coached, veteran Creighton squad that has under the radar talent. The Bluejays can potentially knock the Musketeers out of the Big Dance or at least force the committee to have a second look at them. That provides plenty of motivation for this host against a team that is cracking under the pressure of being on the bubble. Creighton outright.

Our Pick
#550 CREIGHTON +128 (Risking 2 units - To Win: 2.56)

STRIKE POINT SPORTS (CBB)

3-Unit Play. #557 Take California (+7.5) over Arizona State (2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 7) Cal was utterly embarrassed at home to ASu in the first meeting, but at this point in the season its the Golden Bears who are playing the better basketball. There is definitely some value with the points here, as I think it could be Cal who can walk away with the outright win. Take the number and the live underdog in this one.

3-Unit Play. #589 Take Western Kentucky (+9) over Old Dominion (5:30 p.m., Saturday, March 7) The Hilltoppers upset ODU and won the first meeting, and I see WKU staying within range of the Monarchs here as well. Even further incentive, a win for Western would give them a 20-win regular season. But overall, the points will be good. WKU went just 4-4 since the start of February, but all four losses were by five or fewer points. Western already has four road league wins, and here they, at the very least, stay inside this number and cash the ticket against Old Dominion.

3-Unit Play. #607 Take Marshall (+11) over Charlotte (7 p.m., Saturday, March 7) Marshall isn’t any good, but then again neither is Charlotte. 13-17 on the year doesn’t really denote a heavy favorite like this, so please give me all the points and the Herd. Marshall lost at home to Charlotte the fist go round, but I think they’ll be fine to cover this game in a close one down the stretch. I just think the 49ers are in no position to lay such a heavy number to another average team in their league. Grab the double digit point spread.

8-Unit Play. #635 Take Colorado State (-1.5) over Utah State (10 p.m., Saturday, March 7) Colorado State has been a really impressive team this season in College Basketball, and for my money the Rams are and have been the best team in the Mountain West all season. Despite being 12-5 in the league one game behind both Boise State and San Diego State, CSU has a 25-5 overall record and has done plenty to supplant themselves as a solid NCAA Tournament team. And while Utah State will give them a bit of a test, I don’t think the Aggies can find a way to be better tonight. Colorado State has three losses in conference games to Boise, Wyoming and San Diego State, the other three 20+ win-teams in the league. The other was at New Mexico in one of the more difficult atmospheres and road courts to get a win. Coming into this game Colorado State has won four straight and six of their past seven games overall. They’ll want to finish the regular season on a big high, adding another win to their already strong Big Dance resume. CSU’s RPI is 27, a big jump from Utah State’s 133. There is just too much of a separate in talent between these two. Colorado State is a team that was built to win this year, and that’s what they did. Utah State experienced a transition year. New Mexico and Boise State were able to score wins on the Aggies’ home floor aleady, and Colorado State is equipped to do the same. The Rams have three double digit scorers as a part of six players who average over eight points per game. This team is balanced and can get production from a handful of skill players. There is more weapons on Colorado State than Utah State. Three straight wins by double digits coming into this contest. Colorado State is going strong headed into the regular season finale. They handle business on the road and score their 26th victory of the year before the Mountain West Conference Tournament tips off next week. Best of Luck – Strike Point Sports

7-Unit Play. Take #507 Indiana (-9) over New York (7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 7)
Again, just like earlier in the week, the Pacers are just too much for the Knicks. Their solid play on both the perimeter and in the post is going to be the difference. The Knicks home court advantage is pointless. Indiana is in the midst of a playoff push and they know that this is a game that they cannot let slip. I would be worried if this line was 5 or 6, but at nine it shows that Vegas knows this is going to be a double-digit victory. They want to have Indiana favored by more, but it is tough to have an under .500 team favored by 10+ points on the road. The Knicks motley crew will do everything they can to make it close for a bit, but it will all be in vein as the Pacers are just too strong. Look for Indiana to pull away in the second half to win by nearly 20 points. The Pacers are 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall and 5-0 ATS in their last five versus the Eastern Conference. The Knicks meanwhile are 1-5 ATS versus the Pacers in their last six meetings. The favorite is the play here as they are 13-3 ATS in the last 16 meetings versus the two teams.

New Orleans Pelicans +1

While both teams are on a b2b here, Memphis is in a much more difficult spot. Besides it being a b2b, it’s also Memphis’ 4th game in the last 5 days, without having any consecutive games in the same city. Basically, Grizzlies have had to travel for each of these 4 games (actually they’ve had to travel for each of their first 9 games (including today) since the ASB and by the end of this road-trip, Memphis would have played 12 straight games without staying at the same city for more than 1 game). By comparison the Pelicans are playing their 3rd straight home game and unlike Memphis’ 4in5 spot, this is New Orleans’ 3rd game in 4 nights. Basically they’ve been at home during this 5-day stretch and will play 1 less game than the Grizzlies. That’s a big difference in this matchup and I don’t think is properly accounted for in this line. Yesterday, Memphis shot 1 for 11 from the 3PT line, allowed the Lakers 44 PIP, and actually got outrebounded by 2. Against a team like the Lakers, that’s actually a big deal. Memphis was able to come back from a 10-point deficit late in the 4th quarter and win the game due to the 33 to 9 FT-attempt discrepancy, but overall they played like a ‘fatigued’ team. The Pelicans rank 9th in defensive FT-rate allowed, and with this game being on the road for Memphis, I’d expect the FT-attempts to be much more even tonight (or favor the home team). In addition, there was a report that Conley was really struggling in yesterdays game with fatigue/illness, as his head coach indicated: “Anytime he got over five, six minutes he had his hands on his knees. He’s gassed. He’s exhausted.” Bottom line is that I expect the younger and fresher Pelicans to have an advantage in this game from the physical standpoint. Besides, Memphis hasn’t done too well against this team since Anthony Davis joined the league 3 years ago - especially against the spread. Pelicans are 8-2 ATS against Grizzlies overall and 5-0 ATS against them when playing at home during this stretch. Coming off a bad loss and needing to accumulate wins in order to bypass OKC for the 8th seed, I absolutely love this spot for the Pelicans at home tonight.

Minnesota Timberwolves +5

It’s interesting to read about the “gloom and doom” that has descended on the Blazers following the season-ending injury to Wesley Matthews. One reported talked about watching Paul Allen (owner) leave his court-side seat to go into the locker room to check on Matthews, something that the reporter has never seen Allen do before, even when Oden, Roy, and Fernandez sustained serious in-game injuries. Another reporter described Matthews as a player that “….makes this team.” And all of them have indicated pretty much that Matthews is the ‘heart and soul’ of this Blazers team. Not Aldridge, not Batum, and not Lillard – Matthews is the ‘heart and soul’ of the team. Let that sink in for a second. The ‘heart and soul’ of this Blazers team isn’t one of the ‘best players’ on the team, but a guy who has the biggest drive, work ethic, and leadership. Bottom line is that this is not just a big loss, this is also a very demoralizing one. Here’s what some of his teammates had to say after the news broke:

LaMarcus Aldridge – “It’s tough, man. He’s the heart and soul of this team, he brings a lot to this team. I’ve played with him seven, eight years now, so not having him out there is going to be tough.”

Damian Lillard – “Wes plays harder than anybody on our team. It’s hard for our team to think about not having him out there because of everything he brings to this team and the person that he is.”

Statistically, Matthews ranked 14th out of all shooting guards in defensive Real Plus-Minus ratings, 9th in overall Real Plus-Minus ratings, and 7th in WAR. Clearly the loss of Matthews is going to be huge, especially in the short-term. The Blazers have to play tonight, only 2 days removed from that injury, and based on some of the quotes from players the shock of what happened hasn’t worn off just yet. You have to remember, this is a very young team, and if they felt that they were serious contenders in the West before, some serious doubt is probably creeping up now. We’ll see how the Blazers handle themselves from the emotional standpoint today, but I’m assuming it’s going to be really tough. From a physical standpoint, this isn’t the easiest spot either. Blazers are playing their 3rd game in 4 nights (day off yesterday) and the last few games haven’t been easy. They barely pulled out a miracle win against the Clippers in OT on Wednesday and then of course lost Matthews against Dallas on Thursday. I think tonight is going to be a really tough game for this squad both emotionally and physically. On the other hand, Minnesota has had 2 full days off and will be playing their 4th straight home game. They’re 0-3 so far at home on this stand and will be going on a 4-game roadie right after this. I’d expect this team to bring maximum effort tonight, especially after that embarrassing home loss to the rejuvenated Nuggets squad. I know the Wolves are on a 4-game losing streak but the first 3 losses were all by single-digits to playoff teams like CHI, MEM, and LAC. The DEN loss was bad, but I expect this team to regroup and play hard tonight. Besides, I believe the Bookmaker (http://www.cappersmall.com/forums/redirect-to/?redirect=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bookmaker.eu%2F%3Fcmpid %3D4437)s expect the same thing. Pure line-value is with the Blazers tonight, similar to how it was with the Bulls in yesterday’s game. Bookmaker (http://www.cappersmall.com/forums/redirect-to/?redirect=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bookmaker.eu%2F%3Fcmpid %3D4437)s very rarely make these kinds of mistakes, which makes me believe that they also expect a very competitive game here. I expect a flat performance by Portland tonight and will back the home underdog with confidence in this one.

***NC Wilmington (-5 ½) over Charleston
03:00 PM Pacific Rotation: 650
Charleston won a first round game last night against a Drexel team that was without their only capable offensive player and their 35% shooting is an indication that the offense still isn’t functioning. Last night’s win was only the 3 straight up win and 3rd spread win the Cougars’ last 13 games that includes 2 losses to NC Wilmington. Wilmington is rested and the Seahawks are in good position to get the 3 game sweep over Charleston, who applies to a negative 35-107-1 ATS conference tourney situation that is based on last night’s win. My ratings favor Wilmington by 6 ½ points and I’ll take NC Wilmington in a 3-Star Best Bet at -6 or less and for 2-Stars up to -7 points.
**Chattanooga (-9) over Furman
03:00 PM Pacific Rotation: 686
Furman has covered the spread in 3 consecutive games, including a 73-56 win over The Citadel last night. However, that recent run sets up the Paladins in a negative 17-56-3 ATS conference tournament situation and my ratings favor Chattanooga by 9 ½ points.I’ll take Chattanooga in a 2-Star Best Bet at -10 points or less.
