One of the premier PG match-ups in the NBA headlines Sunday’s schedule as Chris Paul and the LA Clippers travel to Golden State to face Steph Curry and the Warriors.

The Clippers are coming off of a five point OT loss to the Portland Trail Blazers this past Wednesday night and have had 3 days to re-adjust and get ready for this matinee against the western conference leading Warriors. Blake Griffin has sat out LA’s last 11 games after having surgery to remove staph infection from his right elbow and the Clippers have gone 7-4 SU and 6-5 ATS in those games. There has been talk that Griffin could return on Sunday but he is currently listed as ‘Doubtful’. The Clippers do possess a very productive bench as he can go to Crawford, Spencer Hawes, Jordan Farmar, Glen Davis and Austin Rivers.

Golden State won their second straight and seventh in ten games as they saw off the Mavericks in a 104-89 decision at home on Friday night. Stephen Curry led six Warriors in double figures with 21 points. Steve Kerr has the Warriors playing great basketball at both ends of the floor, especially on the defensive end. Whilst offensively Golden State are putting up 110 points per game they are limiting opponents to just 42.5% shooting which ranks 1st in the NBA.

The last time these teams met was on Christmas Day when the Clippers handed a 100-86 loss to Golden State, a game that Andrew Bogut was absent. Bogut missed 10 games in the month of December due to injury but returned in January and is a huge match-up advantage in setting screens and his defensive prowess in the paint is among the best in the NBA. The Clippers rank 26th in the League in points in the paint and DeAndre Jordan will have his work cut out Sunday going up against the defensive rotations that Golden State use.

OT included. The Flames conclude what could end up being their regular season defining seven-game road trip here and so far they have came through with flying colours. The Flames are 4-2 on this trip. Their two losses occurred against the Islanders, 2-1 and the Rangers 1-0. Calgary's four wins occurred against New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston and Detroit. The 5-2 win over the Red Wings was Calgary's third game in four days and tail-end of back-to-backs and they were down 2-0. They could easily be 6-0 on this trip. One can only imagine the atmosphere and confidence in that Flames dressing room right now. They've been written off for dead time after time this year. They were called overachievers and they were told it couldn't last. They were especially written off for dead after Mark Giordano was injured early on in this trip. All they do is keep responding and all the market does is keep undervaluing them. Calgary figures to come out more determined than ever here in an attempt to put an exclamation mark on this trip. It sure doesn't hurt that Flames goaltender Kari Ramo is in the zone and has posted a .936 save percentage in road games, which is the highest in the NHL among goaltenders that have participated in at least 12 road contests. The Flames “us against the world” attitude and their extreme determination makes them very worthy again as a pooch.


Speaking of written off for dead and one need not look further than the Ottawa Senators. A month ago, the Sens were 12 points out of a playoff spot and nobody even considered them a threat. The only threat the Sens posed back then was the threat of grabbing the #1 overall pick in the upcoming June draft. When both Ottawa's starting goaltenders went down and they summoned career minor-leaguer Andrew Hammond to fill in, some wondered if the Sens could even compete. The rest of the story is becoming legendary. Ottawa has picked up 15 out of a possible 16 points with Hammond in net. That includes recent road wins in Anaheim, L.A., San Jose and Winnipeg. Suddenly the Sens are right back in the playoff picture and now they're back at home. The Sens are also expected to win now, which is a huge difference than playing games when you are expected to lose. Suddenly the spotlight is back on. Suddenly, there is a buzz surrounding the team. For the first time all year, the Sens will play a game under some pressure. Upon returning home from that hugely successful road trip and carrying all the momentum in the world with them, Ottawa was tooth and nails to narrowly escape the Sabres with a 3-2, come-from-behind win after Buffalo scored twice in its first six shots on net. This is the second game back from said trip. We can't stress enough how much more difficult it is to win under these conditions than the conditions they were playing in when they first called up Hammond. Suddenly, this kid from out of nowhere is being swarmed by media. He was also named the NHL player of the month in February. He has even earned himself the nickname, “Hamburglar”. It took Bobby Hull three years to earn the nickname “The Golden Jet” and it took Maurice Richard 2½ years to earn the nickname “The Rocket”. It's a nice story that has some legs but it is likely to die very quickly. The Sens are merely an average hockey team that got hot for a road trip. The media eats up these Cinderella stories and in the process causes an overreaction by the betting public. That's where we come in to scoop up the remnants of this beautiful overlay.

Everyone is aware of the phenomenal run that Wesbrook has been on: 43 PPG, 13 RPG, and 10 APG in his last 4 starts. But one thing that some might not be aware of is that he’s averaging 34 shot-attempts per game in those starts, accounting for 36% of all the team’s shots during this span. What else is interesting is that OKC is only 1-3 in those games, with the only win coming at home in OT, against the worst team in the league – the Sixers. Defensively, the Thunder have allowed 109 PPG during this Westbrook-run. It’s one thing to allow Phoenix to score 109 on you (in regulation…game also went to OT) and Portland to put up 115 – those are excellent offensive squads. But when the 30th ranked offensive team like the Sixers scores 110 on you in regulation (118 with OT) and an injury plagued squad (no Rose, no Butler, no Gibson) like the Bulls puts up 108, then clearly there are some very serious defensive issues with this team. And that’s why a team like the Raptors should have success in this one. Toronto ranks 3rd in Off-Efficiency, 8th in eFG%, 5th in TO-rate, and 3rd in FT-rate. This is a very efficient scoring squad and they should be able to put up points in this one. I know Toronto has been playing really poorly lately, going 2-7 in the last 9 games. But they’ve played some of them without Lowry and faced top-notch teams like HOU, GSW, and CLE in others. Out of all these games during this stretch, the highest spread they’ve had was +5.5 @ Atlanta, a game they actually won. The number tonight indicates to me that Toronto is as ‘undervalued’ as they’ve been all season and a good spot to back them while receiving some ‘pure value’ with this line. Besides being 1-3 in Westbrook’s last 4 starts, OKC is also 2-6 this year when he has 30+ FG-attempts. Unless something drastic changes, I expect Westbrook to once again hog most of the possessions for OKC and attempt a ton of shots in this one. He should put up stats with ease, but winning this game while covering an inflated number should be more difficult.
