Very tough call at this writing, knowing that for NIU QB Hare (Achilles) is lost for the season and QB Graham (leg) is questionable at this writing. That would leave the ball in the hands of frosh QB Fielder, who laid an enormous egg in the Huskies’ (34-14) Title Game defeat to Bowling Green. It is also a negative that under HC Carey, N. Illinois is 0-3 ATS in Bowl Games with losses of 29, 7 and 21 points. On their behalf, the team averaged 33/427 on offense this year and was a 200 CLUB member aided by RB Bouagnon and WR Golladay. And, remember the history of this program which finds the Huskies to be true to their namesake at 25-9 ATS as underdog. Motivation must be a question for Boise, who tanked down the stretch once they figured a New Year’s Day Bowl party was not in the offing. Following a loss at Utah St. on October 16th, their unbeaten letdown disintegrated into a 3-3 SU, 2-4 ATS finish, including home losses on consecutive November weekends to New Mexico and Air Force. One must question their mental approach in their 14th consecutive Bowl appearance for the program. Fundamentally, QB Rypien and RB McNicholls (5.6 YPR) lead a potentially explosive offense that averages 38/489 and their 118/3.4 rushing defense is the ideal remedy to stop the thrusts of Husky runners. Virtually impossible to make a definitive call, however, without the status of NIU QB Graham!

There is a lot of public money flowing to a Bowling Green team who will be without HC Babers (has accepted Syracuse job) and whose Bowl coach (former DC Ward) is about to join his ex-boss in the Carrier Dome after this game. That leaves all the motivation in the hands of senior QB Johnson, who will look to continue the fabulous offensive career that has seen the BGs go to Bowls in 3 consecutive seasons. This year, Johnson completed 69% of his passes with a 43/8 ratio. He was ably abetted by top RB Greene and WR Lewis, who led the Falcons to a 43/561 offense. GA Southern is not without their own question marks. Former HC Fritz has bolted to Tulane, leaving former RB coach McGee in charge. That is not necessarily a bad thing, as the Eagles once again lead the country in rushing with 356/6.5 YPR. QB Ellison and RB Breida run this option to perfection. What has the public so interested in this fade is that GA Southern was destroyed in their final game of the season by the passing attack of GA State QB Arbuckle, who threw for over 300 yards. The result was a (34-7) Eagles’ home loss as 21 point home chalk. If that happens again, the GA Southern ground game will have a tough time playing catchup!

Boise St has been one of the more successful programs in the country the past decade. Every part of their program has been upgraded and revamped. They started the this year of 5-1 including a huge win against Washington. Then it lost starting quarterback Ryan Finley to a broken ankle, injuries mounted and the Broncos lost their way with three defeats in the last six games. They go into this bowl game at 8-4. Northern Illinois had quarterback troubles of their own, with four different QB's going down injured. Redshirt freshman Ryan Graham is back to start for the Huskies today. Note that this team played Boston College and Ohio State, losing by a total of just 10 points. Each team as the ability to run the ball with much of the same results. Boise sophomore Jeremy McNichols has rushed for 1,334 yards with 18 touchdowns and NIU junior Joel Bouagnon has 1,269 yards and 18 touchdowns. Each team has scored 53 touchdowns and both defenses and schemes mirror one another. These two programs and both teams are dead even. The oddsmakers are offering a lot of points here. Time Warner Cable Arena has been very good to the Hornets and tonight I see the home team picking up another win with a short number. These two team played each other earlier this month in Boston and the Celtics picked up a victory 98-93 and tonight in Charlotte I see the Hornets returning the favor. Boston has dropped 3 out of their last 4 games while the Hornets won their last game at home in overtime against the Raptors. With the Hornets winning 11 out of their first 15 home games this season and again with a short number I like Charlotte winning this game in the second half and we pick up a nice 4-Unit Winner.

3-Unit Play. Take #704 Charlotte (-2) over Boston (7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 23)

The Hornets have been playing well this month and have been one of the biggest surprises in the East this year. They are not a surprise to me as I had my biggest NBA futures wager on them to go 'over' their season win total, which they will do easily. I think the Hornets are being undersold here. They have lost four of their last five games. But they have revenge against the Celtics for a close loss here on Dec. 12. I do not think Boston is going to win twice in Charlotte in the span of two weeks. The Celtics have gone just 2-2 in their last four road games and gave up 119 points to Detroit the last time they were on the road.


2-Unit Play. Take #705 Houston (-1) over Orlando (7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 23)

I will take the points in this matchup. Houston won again on Monday to get over .500. They have been much better since they fired Kevin McHale and now this team is on the rise. I do not think that they should be underdogs in this one even if Orlando has been playing very well. Houston is getting Ty Lawson back after serving his two-game suspension and he should give the offense a boost. Houston has won three straight and seven of their last 10 games both SU and ATS. The Rockets are the play here.


4-Unit Play. Take #710 Indiana (-6.5) over Sacramento (7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 23)

Indiana has been excellent at home this year. They are one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the league and they are even better in their own gym. The Pacers were swept by the Kings last year and I think that Indiana remembers that and will want revenge this year. The Pacers have lost their last two games and are on a 0-3 ATS slide but they will get it turned around quickly. Indiana has won four straight home games by an average of 15 points apiece. The Kings are wrapping up a four-game road trip that has taken them all over the East and Midwest. They are just thinking about getting home for the holidays and having three days off. I think they will get blown out tonight and this is a good situation for Indiana to snap its losing streak.


3-Unit Play. Take #717 Philadelphia (+10.5) over Milwaukee (8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 23)

The Bucks should not be this big of a favorite against anyone. The 76ers are one of the worst teams in the league but they are still playing hard. They came up short at the window last night to a very tough Memphis team and the 76ers are 0-10 ATS in their last 10 games. But now the books have gone too far the other way with the spreads and the value is now on betting on this team, who is just 1-29 SU on the season! This might be one of the worst teams in the history of sports. But I think they are going to get the cash today. Hold your nose and take the points in this one. These two teams played a low-scoring game (91-87) last month and I think tonight will be similar.

Bowling Green can score we all know that but the best defense Georgia Southern has is their offense as when it’s on the field Bowling Green can’t score and I believe Georgia Southern will have a lot of long time consuming drives. Mid-Tenn St. finished on a solid 4-0 SU ATS run to get this Bowl bid with a 7-5 SU record. A closer inspection shows the last 3 of those wins to be against towel-tossers, Florida Atlantic, N. Texas and UTSA. Against the cream of the CUSA crop, Mid-Tenn lost by 30 at Western and 29 at LA Tech. Were they fortunate they did not play S. Mississippi! They were led down the stretch by QB Stockstill, who completed 70% of his passes in the last half of the season with a 27/8 ratio. He is ably abetted by WRs James and Battles. Western Michigan counters with the momentum of a (35-30) season-ending win at Toledo that knocked the Rockets out of the Title Game. This team was good enough to cover against Michigan St. and Ohio St. in September but bad enough to lose key November division encounters on consecutive weeks to Bowling Green and NIU, knocking them out of Title contention. QB Terrell is the straw that stirs the drink, backed by a trio of runners in Bogan, Franklin and Bellamy. Must feel they are a bit better of a team that can get this victory only if they can focus following their season-ending upset.

Signal caller issues abound in this game with SD State QB Maxwell Smith (knee) out for the season, while Cincinnati QB Kiel is listed as questionable at this writing due to “personal” reasons. Despite huge offensive potential, which saw the Bearcats average 36/559 on offense, it was their defensive ineptitude against quality teams that makes questions abound. Against the quality teams in the AAC, the Bearcats went 0-4 SU vs. Memphis, Houston, USF and Temple, allowing a whopping 44 PPG. They will be facing a San Diego St. team who brings the momentum of a 9-0 SU winning streak into this contest. Fundamentals speak loudly in favor of the Aztecs. Their 67% run/pass balance puts the onus on the RB tandem of Pumfrey and Price. Replacement QB Chapman should be decent now that he has 2 games under his belt, including the Title Game victory (27-24) on his home field against Air Force. Bearcats’ highly potent offense could well struggle against the Rocky Long 3-3-5 defense which allows just 18/288. Aztecs’ fundamental excellence was confirmed with a (+19) net TO margin (best in the land). Topping it all off is the fact they played in Hawaii this season, recording a confidence-building (28-14) victory against the Rainbow Warriors on October 10th.

Cincinnati matches up with San Diego St in the Hawaii Bowl. But, the Aztecs could be without their senior quarterback who torn his ACL back on Nov. 28. The injury, which is traditionally season-ending, apparently isn't keeping Maxwell Smith from trying to suit up as he has delayed reconstructive surgery with hopes of playing. He hasn't been practicing, but is a factor if he plays. Cincinnati could see redshirt freshman quarterback Christian Chapman as the Aztecs backup. Look for SD State to constantly run the ball to make up for a lack of a strong passing game. Additionally, their run offense is top notch with Donell Prumphrey impressing scouts. For Cincinnati, their QB is set with Heydon Moore. Moore will be something to watch as he leads the 5th best offense, averaging 559.4 total yards per game, into a tough matchup with the Aztecs. Look for the Bearcats to establish the run and to keep the Aztecs off balanced. The Bearcats greatest strength is thru the air. Look for them to rev up the pass game and take control of the game in the second half. This game may just come down the the Bearcats kicking game.Andrew Gantz is 48-for-49 on extra points and 21-for-27 on field goals with a long of 51 for Cincinnati.
