2-Unit Play. Take #517 Princeton (+16.5) over Miami (7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29)

This is an easy call for the underdog. Princeton might be the best team in the Ivy League this year. And they would like nothing more than to get an upset win over an ACC team. Miami already lost at home as a huge favorite against Northeastern. They also had some bad losses at home last year. The Hurricanes have their ACC opener this Saturday against Syracuse and I think that the Canes are looking past this Ivy school. Princeton has gone 7-2 ATS in its last nine ACC games and Miami is due for a letdown here. Take the points.

2-Unit Play. Take #559 CS-Northridge (-1.5) over Idaho State (9 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29)

I will go with Northridge in this one. I think this line says it all. This is not a strong Northridge team but they are favored over Idaho State on the road. That really jumped out at me. I think that Reggie Theus has a much better team now than he did at the start of the season and this team is on an upward trend. Idaho State won't be able to hold up in what I think will be a high-scoring game.

2-Unit Play. Take #546 Kansas (-16) over UC-Irvine (9 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29)

I am going with the Jayhawks in this one. Irvine has been blown out against any good team that they have played this year. They don't have the depth to keep up with the Jayhawks, whose offense has been impressive over the last few weeks. Kansas got freshman Cheick Diallo healthy and he gives them a big body in the middle to control the paint and to match up with Irvine's big men. Kansas has a big edge in the backcourt. I think that Kansas will easily blow out a good team from a much smaller conference.

I'm a big fan of the NHL advanced stats for handicapping and Carolina is probably the most underrated team in the NHL according to these numbers. I agree with that and playing an overrated squad here like the Devils sets up for some nice line value in this one. The early money so far agrees as it's pouring in on the Hurricanes here.

New Jersey has just one win their last five games and that won was a crazy victory over Detroit in a game they should have lost. Overall they're struggling having scored more than 1 goal in just 2 of the past 7 games. They face a Carolina team here playing better hockey right now and coming off a nice win over a good Chicago team last time out, their 3rd win in the last 4 games

We roll with Detroit here as they hook up against New York on the road. The public favors New York after a series of losses at home, we still like Detroit here as we think it is more convincing that Detroit bounces back after back to back losses than New York does. Note this is a Pistons team that has big goals this season and took a lot of heat for giving Reggie Jackson the contrac they did. And, yet they are the ones sitting at 17-14 and a decent 7-9 on the road and for a team that was horrible last year, this team has come a long way. They have a positive coaching staff, a decent bench and a winning culture that they are slowly beginning to cultivate. One way they are doing that is this team has only lost more than back to back games just once this season and its hard to see them losing 3 straight here for the 2nd time this season. This is a squad that ran into a tough Boston and Atlanta team on the road, but prior to that they had beat Miami and Chicago on the road, had beat Boston (it was the Celtics with revenge recently so don't hold that loss against Detroit), nearly beating the Clippers at home (losing by just 2) and beating Indiana by 22. The Knicks sound like a sexy team to take from time to time, but this is a team that is 2-6 ATS against a team with a straight up winning record and faces a Piston team who is 4-0 ATS against a team with a straight up losing record and 15-7 ATS overall coming off a straight up loss as well.

Michigan State comes into this game as the #1 team in the country with a perfect 13-0 SU record. However, the Spartans have played just three solid teams this season; they beat Kansas by 6 points, Louisville by 4 points, and Florida by 6 points. Michigan State played all three of those games with their best player, Denzel Valentine, and two of those games were at home with another game on a neutral court. Valentine is out until mid-January with a knee injury, and the Spartans will play their first true road conference game while missing their most important player. Valentine was playing 30.6 minutes per game while averaging 19 points per game, collecting eight rebounds per game, and dishing out seven assists per game. Valentine dominated the ball on offense while accounting for 29.2% of Michigan State’s possessions and taking 30.1% of the shots while grabbing 24.5% of the defensive rebounds. That’s a lot of production by one player, and his absence tonight will be too much to overcome for the Spartans.


Iowa comes into this game with a 9-3 SU record, including a perfect 6-0 mark at home. Their three losses have come by a combined 12 points to good teams like Dayton, Notre Dame, and Iowa State who are a combined 27-6 SU on the season. The Hawkeyes are flying well under the radar this season, and they are an experienced team that has a lot of talent. Iowa starts four seniors, including Jarrod Uthoff who will be a top NBA draft pick. Iowa is a well-balanced team as they’ve had nine different players reach double figures at least once this season, and five different players have led the team in scoring at least once in 12 games. “We’re in a good place,” said head coach Fran McCaffery. “We’re taking care of the ball, our shot selection is good, and our ball movement is good. We have a lot of different guys producing, so ultimately, I feel pretty good.” Iowa is catching Michigan State at the perfect time, so we’ll lay the short points with the Hawkeyes in this game on Tuesday night.
