I love the home underdog in this one. BYU is a terrible road team and is just 3-5 away from home this year. Pepperdine has won back-to-back games by blowout and this team beat St. Mary's at home and St. Mary's is the best team in the league. Pepperdine has won five of six games and they are a team on the rise. BYU lost on the road at Portland as a double-digit favorite. They are going to lose this one to. Pepperdine swept the series last year, winning both games. They have just about all the same players back and will do it again here. Pepperdine is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings and the home team is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings in this series. Pepperdine is 7-3 ATS against the Cougars since 2007. I'm taking the points and calling for the upset.

2-Unit Play. Take #534 Indiana (-8.5) over Northwestern (Noon, Saturday, Jan. 23)

Indiana has been underrated and undervalued. Most people gave up on the Hoosiers when they lost Robert Blackmon. But they have not lost since falling to Duke on Dec. 2. That is 11 straight wins and I think they will keep it going today against Northwestern. The Wildcats have lost two straight games and are coming off a really tough loss in overtime at Maryland. Northwestern has lost four of its last six games and they have not been good on the road. Indiana has gone 6-2 ATS in its last eight home games and I expect another big effort here today.

2-Unit Play. Take #545 West Virginia (-3.5) over Texas Tech (1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 23)

The Mountaineers are coming off a shocking home loss. They lost this week to Texas as double-digit favorites for their second loss in a row. Now the are going on the road and I think that they will bounce right back with a win. This is one of the best teams in the conference and they are going up against one of the youngest. I had this spread at 6.5 so there is a lot of value here. WVU won by 19 and by 11 last year and they are 3-1 ATS in their last four games against Texas Tech. They have won seven of the eight meetings since they have been in the same conference. Tech has played hard. But they are just 1-4 in their last five games and I dn't see them winning this one.

2-Unit Play. Take #564 Old Dominion (-6.5) over Marshall (2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 23)

Old Dominion is a big favorite for a reason. Marshall is 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games. But they are coming off a road loss at Charlotte where they lost by eight points and gave up 103 points! Old Dominion is 0-4 ATS in its last four games. But they were the top team in the league last year and I expect a really strong effort here. Marshall is 5-1 in league play versus 3-3 for the Monarchs. But Marshall has played the weakest schedule of 14 CUSA teams and Old Dominion has played one of the toughest. ODU won this matchup by 17 points last March at home and they won by 19 points on the road last season. Marshall is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings and they have won the last five meetings. Lay the points.

2-Unit Play. Take #603 Detroit (+6.5) over UW-Milwaukee (4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 23)

I will take the points in this matchup. Detroit is always a strong underdog in league play and I think they have a chance to win this game. The Titans are 3-3 in league play and Milwaukee is just 4-2 so this is a big game for both teams. I expect a close game, just like last year's 78-74 game here in Milwaukee. The underdog has been great in this series and is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings. Detroit is coming off two tough losses to Oakland and Wright State. But both games were very close. Detroit has played three straight games against the top teams in the league and I think they are ready for the upset here. Milwaukee is just 2-4 ATS in its last six games. I'll take the points.

UCLA is coming off a big road win over Oregon St this week 82-73 and if UCLA can hit the 3-ball early this game will be close from start to finish. No matter who wins this game and yes UCLA can pull off the upset I don't see this big home favorite covering.

K-State defense has given up an average of 78ppg in their last 4 conference games. Thought this total would have been in the low 130's so tonight this BIG-12 game has outstanding betting value. Oklahoma St is 4-1 O/U in their last 5 road games and Kansas St is 5-2 O/U against conference opponents.

Some will look at this game and say that Michigan State is in bounce back mode and they will bounce back due to the recent defeats and that the Spartans haven't looked this bad in a long time so coach Tom Izzo will have them ready to go and to get back on track. However, I see this game much differently and love the line value here with the road dog. There is tremendous pressure on the Spartans right now. Michigan State needs a win and they need it badly and this is putting a lot of stress on a team that hasn't exactly responded well to stress this season. Just look at all the tight losses the Spartans have had and you will see they don't do well in crunch time. That said, to be getting 3.5 points here with the better team and a team that is also seeking revenge is absolutely a huge value. Last year in the conference tourney the Terrapins lost to the Spartans and you can bet they had this rematch circled on their calendars. Maryland had won the two regular season meetings between the teams and that, of course, included a win at Michigan State so they certainly won't be intimidated by playing here on Saturday evening. The Terps look much improved since the last meeting between these teams while the Spartans continue to struggle and just haven't shown the same defensive skills and rebounding strength that prior Spartans teams have shown. That doesn't bode well for Michigan State getting by one of the top teams in the country Saturday evening. The past three seasons Maryland is 17-8 ATS in games with a posted total in a range of 140 to 149.5 points. The Terps are also 12-6 ATS in Saturday games the past three seasons. This season Maryland is 4-2 ATS in their games against teams with a winning record and I certainly expect them to be at their best in this huge Big 10 battle. The past three seasons Michigan State is 1-4 ATS as a home favorite of 3.5 to 6 points. Also, the Spartans are 2-5 ATS in Big 10 games this season and 0-3 ATS when off of a loss to a conference foe. In other words, don't look for the bounce back here as the struggles for Sparty are likely to continue. Grab the generous points with the Terrapins!

Louisville is 15-3 SU on the season, but the Cardinals have played absolutely nothing in terms of competition. Louisville has played the #178 rated schedule this season; the worst of any team ranked in the Top 25. Some of their wins have come against the likes of Hartford, North Florida, St. Francis (NY), Grand Canyon, Kennesaw State, Utah Valley, and other no-names. Louisville has excellent numbers on both ends of the court, but they should considering the level of competition they’ve faced. The Cardinals have been shaky on the road where they are just 1-3 SU in true road games this season. Their lone win came by just 5 points (77-72) at North Carolina State.

Georgia Tech comes into this game off back-to-back losses with their last being a 78-77 home loss to Virginia Tech. Off those two losses, we expect a strong bounce back performance here, especially since the Yellow Jackets are still 9-2 SU at home this season. Georgia Tech played their worst defensive home game of the season as they allowed 78 points to the Hokies, including 45 points in the second half. Overall, Georgia Tech is holding their opponents to just 68.2 points per game on 41.5% shooting from the field and 30.1% shooting from three-point land. Louisville’s offense is only averaging 69.8 points per game on 42.7% shooting from the field and 26.9% shooting from three-point land on the road this season. Louisville only beat Georgia Tech 52-51 on this court last season, and we expect another low-scoring defensive slugfest, so we’ll take the points with the Yellow Jackets in this game on Saturday afternoon.

Oklahoma State is just 10-8 SU on the season, but the majority of the Cowboys’ wins have come against the likes of Long Beach State twice, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Tennessee-Martin, Towson, Longwood, UMKC, and TCU. Oklahoma State comes into this game off their biggest win of the season, an 86-67 win over Kansas as 9-point home underdogs. That win was preceded by close games against Oklahoma and Texas. Those three games culminated in a huge upset win, and it only sets the Cowboys to regress significantly in tonight’s game at Kansas State. The Cowboys are the Big 12’s least experienced team, and they are playing without their best player, Phil Forte, who is out for the season with an elbow injury. Oklahoma State is 0-3 SU in true road games with their average loss coming by -13 points per game.

Kansas State is just 1-5 SU during their last six games, but three of those games came on the road. The Wildcats played Oklahoma, Iowa State, and Baylor during that span, so they are now taking a monumental step-down in class against Oklahoma State in this game. Kansas State also lost their last home game, so returning home off a road loss ensures we’ll get a peak performance in this game. Kansas State is 8-2 SU at home where they own a +12.3 point differential this season. The Wildcats’ defense has also been terrific at home; they are holding opponents to just 64.9 points per game on 40% shooting from the field and 23.8% shooting from three-point land. Oklahoma State is simply in a terrible spot for a young team, so we’ll lay the points with Kansas State in this game on Saturday night.

Maryland is having a terrific season as they come into this game with a 17-2 SU record. However, the Terrapins are just 9-10 ATS which is a clear indicator that they are not a dominating team. Maryland has played just the 92nd ranked schedule, so the poor pointspread record certainly raises some red flags. Maryland’s last two conference road games were also close calls as they lost by 3 points at Michigan and they only won by 3 points at Northwestern. Now they will be playing in one of the toughest gyms in the Big 10, and another shaky performance will result in a blowout loss. Maryland is heavily reliant on their 3-point shooting as 30.3% of their points scored come from beyond the arc. But the Terrapins will face an extremely difficult matchup here as Michigan State only allows 24.4% of the points scored on them to come from three-point land.

Michigan State opened the season at 13-0 SU, but the Spartans are just 3-4 SU over their last seven games. They come into this game on a 3-game losing streak with two of those losses coming on their strong home court. Michigan State will come with a peak performance here, and we expect them to snap their losing streak in a big way. Michigan State’s defense has been excellent all season; they’ve held their opponents to just 55.5 points per game on 34.1% shooting from the field and 25.1% shooting from three-point land at home this season. Michigan State’s offense has also been terrific at home this season where they are averaging 75.5 points per game on 46.9% shooting from the field and 36.8% shooting from three-point land. Michigan State is in a good bounce back spot, so we’ll lay the short points with the Spartans in this game on Saturday night.

Kansas comes of one of its more horrible losses of the year and in Self's tenure getting hammered once againat Oklahoma State which has to get old for Self. And what better way to take out your anger on your rival in Texas at home as a heavy favorite. Kansas is the same team that beat Baylor by 28 points which speaks volumes. This team is once again a heavy favorite today and though Texas is picking up steam under Smart in his first year, still, we like Kansas to have a lot of motivation to bounce-back in a big way here.

3-Unit Play. #554. Take Nebraska PK over Michigan (Saturday @ 2pm est)

You have to give Tim Miles a lot of credit. With what he has, he has made Nebraska a respectable program. Note that this team is top 70 on offense and has reeled off 4 straight conference wins after a very tough schedule to start the year. Note, 3 of those conference wins were on the road. Michigan beat this team 58-44 last year and you can expect Nebraska not to be held to 44 points this time around. Nebraska plays with a lot of heart here and gets revenge from last year.

3-Unit Play. #662. Take Michigan State -3.5 over Maryland (Saturday @ 6:30pm est)

These are the type of games that Tom Izzo gets his players up for and they play well. Michigan State is in a Duke like funk right now in conference play given the parity of the league. State has lost 3 straight and is 3-4 in conference play and can ill-afford to go 3-5 in conference play and this team knows that. This is still a top 15 offense and if Maryland had its issues against top 35 Michigna on the road, with a turnover margin outside the top 225 and a big showdown with Iowa on deck, we like Michigan State to pull out the big win at home here.

3-Unit Play. #598. Take Oregon -8 over UCLA (Saturday @ 4pm est)

Oregon is a team on the rise. Due to the influence of Nike, free gear and just the aura that Nike brings to the program in facilities, this team is getting some serious recruits - in Basketball. Oregon has 15 wins and is 4-2 in conference plays and have beat similar ranked UCLA squads by 18 on the road at Utah or 13 points against Stanford. This sets up nicely here for Oregon who has some revenge, decent public fade and a top 20 offense/top 65 defense facing a defense outside the top 115 sest up in a decent manner here for Oregon despite the big spread.

3-Unit Play. #575. Take Illinios -1 over Minnesota (Saturday @ 8:30pm est)

Illinois has not seen it's fair share of progress and improvement with John Groce at the helm as he is well aware he will get the axe after this year if this team does not come together. This team is 1-5 in conference play but has a monumental win over Purdue as in the right spots, this team is worth a shot here. This team comes off a 103-69 loss at rival Indiana and one has to think that is going to spur an incredible amount of pride and motivation for this team here. With getting hammered on national television, decent public fade, having a top 5 turnover percentage team and facing a Minnesota team who is a dismal 0-7 in

Although I really like how the Florida Panthers were playing hockey earlier in the month you can see the youth in this team starting to hinder the club. After winning 12 straight the club has now lost 4 of 5 and must face a hot Lightning squad after playing one of their best games of the season against the Blackhawks last night. Tampa is now 7-0 over their last seven and are starting to show signs of last years team. The Lightning have more depth, talent and are Florida's team. I like the way Tampa has started to pick up the tempo on offense and also think their defense is better than Florida. Tampa has already beat the Panthers once this season 3-1 on January 17th and i believe this will be a very similar game tonight. Look for the Lightning to win on the road in their home state tonight.

This is a revenge game for Anaheim and also a chance to prove to everyone that they can win on the road. The Ducks are now 4-4-1-1 in their last ten games on the road but 4-2 in their last 6. They have finally started scoring goals and have 18 over their last 6 whiile giving up 12 to their opponents . The Ducks still have the one of, if not the best defenses in the league. Anaheim is going to make a big run for a playoff spot and whomever has to play them is going to have an extremely tough opponent in the first round. Detroit doesn't match up well with Anaheim and with the Red wings having a relatively easy game against the Sabres last night I think this is a great opportunity for the Ducks to prove that they can win on the road. They have the deeper squad with more talent. Look for the Ducks to surprise the Red Wings tonight at home.

The Timberwolves defense has been giving up points at will and I see this game being an up-tempo game tonight in Minny. We roll with these two selections today in what should be a great opportunity here for New York to bounce-back after a terrible loss in their last game to the Clippers. From ejections, to poor shooting to simply getting routed by LA is not the way the Knicks wanted to continue what has been a decent bounce-back season. New York is 22-23 which is far better than what anyone expected especially with Derek Fisher as the head coach who frankly is not an x/o guy and delegates his work to assistants who are doing the real coaching. Phil Jackson knows this. This is a team that lost 88-116 in their last game after back to back wins and 4-2 over their last 6 games. Charlotte comes off a huge win at Orlando and we expect them to have a let down here consequently as 'Melo and company will get up to face Jordan and the Hornets as they typically do even when they had down seasons.

David Blatt is gone. Lebron is Happy. All is well in Cleveland until Lebron finds someone else to blame? We'll just have to wait and see. But, for now, this team will come together with Tyronn Lue who is Lebron's hand picked guy. This is no accident. Blatt took over the Cleveland job before Lebron decided to come back to Cleveland. If Lebron would have agreed earlier, then Izzo or even Billy Donovan would have been pursuaded to come. But, Lebron chose to come back a bit later when many of the coaching hires were already done. But, ironically, this coaching hire might work. This team will have a its an us versus the world mentality. They are using the Golden State game as the reason for Blatt to be fired but in reality, the makeup and sync of this team is not that sound. But, Lue likely brings them together here. This is a Doc Rivers coaching tree guy. Lue has a lot of tenacity and in his first game as a head coach and the rest of the season, this is the spurt this team likely needs. They like Lue. They will play for him as they did not play for Blatt. Consequently, what does a team do in their first game when a coach gets fired - and to shove it to guys like Rick Carlisle (who is the head of the Coaches Association who called this firing everything but a sham job) - they win, and win big. That is Lebron's way of saying, it's my way, it's my crew or the highway. Lebron rightfully feels that his time is limited and he does not want NBA Finals runner-up trophies and he feels like Blatt is not the answer and maybe that's so - even for the simple fact they might not get along that well. In their first game without Blatt, look for the Cavs to rout a rival here in the Bulls by potentially 15 or more or even 20 or more. The Bulls also beat this team by a bucket back in late October, what better way to show improvement in a short period of time than beating they by 15-20 here at home in Cleveland.

Opinion – New York (-1 ½) over CHARLOTTE

New York was destroyed last night by the Clippers while Charlotte had to go to overtime to win at Orlando. Those events set up a reversal scenario tonight, as the Knicks apply to a 103-41-1 ATS situation based on last night’s results. Nicolas Batum and Cody Zeller both missed last night’s game, and are expected to be out again tonight, and Jeremy Lamb is out for the Hornets too, which hurts the defense. My ratings favor New York by ½ a point with current lineups and the line has adjusted to the injuries and the Hornets’ overtime. I’ll just lean with New York at -2 or better based on the good situation and I’d take New York in a 1-Star Best Bet at -1 or better.

Opinion – ST. MARY’S (-17) over Portland

The line is catching up to St. Mary’s but my variance adjusted ratings favor the Gaels by 20 points (I get 23 ½ with no variance adjustment), so there is still some value. I’m a bit concerned about a possible letdown after their comeback win over Gonzaga but I used my database to mimic the situation (i.e. a home win over a good team and now a big home favorite 2 nights later) and it turned out to be a slight positive (54% ATS). One game that came up in that query was St. Mary’s 79-46 home win over San Diego just 2 night after beating BYU. So, with my concerns quelled I have no issues in recommending St. Mary’s as an opinion but I’ll still resist making the Gaels a Best Bet unless the line goes down some more. I’d take St. Mary’s for 1-Star at -16 or less.
