7-Unit Play. Take #774 Valparaiso (-2) over BYU (7 p.m., Tuesday, March 29)

I am going with Valpo here. I think that this team is much more sound than the Cougars. And I think that this game means more to the team from the Horizon League than it does to BYU. The Cougars don't have enough in the paint to slow down this very experienced and very talented Valparaiso team. This is a team that should have gone to the NCAA Tournament and would've been a handful for teams. BYU has not played a tough schedule this year. They have benefitted from their home court advantage so far in this tournament and teams having to make the long trip out to Provo. But now BYU has to trek across the country and I don't think that they are up for a game on this stage tonight in MSG. Valpo has blown out all three teams that it has played in this tournament. BYU was fortunate to escape games with Virginia Tech and Creighton. I think their luck runs out against this very motivated and experienced Valparaiso team.

2-Unit Play. Take #17 San Jose (-180) over Vancouver (10:00) p.m., Tuesday, Mar. 29)

These two teams have faced off against each other three times already this season with the Sharks taking two of the three. Vancouver though has the most recent win back on March 5th where the Canucks scored 4 goals in San Jose. The score was a little lopsided in that match considering the Sharks had 36 penalty minutes. I don't think anyone can win in the NHL when they are playing a man down for that much time. The Sharks are still have one of the best records on the road where they are 25-10-2-1. San Jose has the better all-around team and are much more disciplined on the ice. Vancouver is 2-7-0-1 over their last ten games and 3-7 on their home ice in the last ten games. Take San Jose to redeem themselves from their last match-up against Vancouver.

2-Unit Play. Take #9 Toronto (+1.5, -140) over Florida (7:35) p.m., Tuesday, Mar. 29)

The Florida Panther are coming off two big wins that put then in sole possession of first place in the Atlantic over Boston and Tampa Bay and must be feeling pretty good about where they stand right now. But the Panthers next task will be avoiding a letdown with a schedule that could very well do just that. Surprisingly, Toronto has been actually playing very well as of late. They are 5-3 over their last 8 games but have dropped the last two against the Lightning and Bruins. But the scores in those two games don't reflect the Toronto's play. The Maple Leafs outshot the Lightning 34-18 last night but went 0-7 on the power play which is no 3-30 in the last nine games. Bernier has been playing at a high level where he has allowed two goals or less in five consecutive starts. Don't be surprised if the Maple Leafs catch Florida by surprise tonight and win this match-up.

3-Unit Play. Take #767 Oklahoma City (-3.5) over Detroit (7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 29)

This is an odd line, but no worries. The Thunder are playing great basketball, and playing each and every game like they are trying to make a statement. Everyone is talking about San Antonio and Golden State (and for good reason), but sleeping on OKC a bit. The Pistons will fight valiantly tonight but they just won't be able to keep pace for the full 48 minutes. Don't let Vegas fool you with this line. Every once in a while the square play is the right play and tonight, it is the Thunder. OKC is 7-0 ATS in their last seven games versus a team with a winning S.U. record, while Detroit is 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games versus a team with a winning road record.

CIT Final
Cal-Irvine at Columbia (-1) 7:00 ET CBC TV
Must put aside my affection for this Columbia team, whom we used often with great profit in this year’s Ivy League season. Due to injuries last season, the Lions have, in effect, 6 returning starters on the court for HC Kyle Smith. Lo and Mullens are a premier Ivy backcourt, but they meet their match tonight in Irvine starters, Nelson and Young, an experienced duo who has started together for 3 seasons. If the Lions are to win this game, their bigs (Rosenberg, Petrasek and Meisner) will have to float to the perimeter, where Columbia connects on nearly 10 triples per game in their 26 attempts. Certainly, the smaller Lions, who took their lumps on the interior vs. Yale big men, Sears and Sherrod, will struggle on the defensive end. For, the Anteaters rotate 4 interior players ranging from the 6’10” Mike Best to the 7’6” Mamadou N’Diaye. While Columbia romped past smaller NJIT (80-65) on Sunday, Irvine was using their interior size (and the suspension of Coastal Carolina’s best boy, Wiggins, to dominate the Chants (66-47) in Conway. Anteaters have become road warriors in this event, winning three times at N. Dakota, LA Lafayette and CCU. Having traveled to numerous outposts in the West, it does not appear they will be overwhelmed by, tiny and largely uninhabited, Levien Gym on the upscale Columbia campus on the Upper West Side. Against arguably the best team Columbia has faced on this court all season, the Lions end their season at home 17-5 SU.

NIT Semifinals
Madison Square Garden

BYU vs. Valparaiso (-2) 7:00 ET ESPN
In the NIT Semi-Final lid lifter, its offense vs. defense with the 94’ Cougars facing off against the Valpo defense that allows just 63 PPG on 38% shooting. With a +9.4 rebound margin, it could well be one and done for the up-tempo Cougars. Anyone who has watched BYU play in recent seasons must love their up-tempo game. They are one of the more improved teams from start to finish of this season, as they enter on a 12-3 SU run (12-1 SU excluding Gonzaga). With triple/double machine, Collinsworth, leading the way, the Cougars are explosive with veterans Fisher and Kaufusi. But, the real improvement comes with the maturation of 1st year players Emery, Davis and Seljaas. Valpo is the tortoise in the matchup. They are the more experienced team with all 5 starters back from a 28-6 SU team of last year. Their big man, Peters, is the best player on the floor, ably abetted by Carter, Hammink and Walker. Must note the strong tendencies of BYU 11th year HC Rose, whose teams are a perennial 60% plus ATS play as chalk, but continually falter in the underdog role, where they are just 26-47 ATS, including 3-8 ATS L2Y and stand just 23-40 ATS in competitively priced games, where the line is +3 to -3.
George Washington vs San Diego St. (-3) 9:30 ESPN
The George Washington Colonials make the relatively short drive to New York City to face the San Diego St. Aztecs, who make the west to east journey for this NIT Semifinal matchup at Madison Square Garden. Tip time for the second half of the double header is at 9:30 ET as televised by ESPN. The game features A-10 member George Washington, who is 26-10 SU for the season vs San Diego St, who is 28-9 SU for the season. Though neither of these teams was good enough to qualify for the NCAA Tourney, they have taken advantage of this NIT event to further their progress this season and be one of 16 teams who are still playing this 2016 CBKB season.
George Washington was on the periphery of the bubble through the beginning of March, but a CCT loss to eventual A-10 Champion, St, Joes, ended their NCAA dreams. Yet, they have prospered in this event, beginning with a narrow (82-80) victory at home against Hofstra, followed by a solid road win at Monmouth, and a third victory again at home vs Florida. Concerns in today’s matchup against a quality San Diego St. team is that their only road win of note in the regular season was at VCU. In reality, this was a team that did not play to their potential. More was expected from the squad that added Wake transfer, Cavanaugh, to a front court that also featured Big Man Supreme, Kevin Larsen. Floor leader Joe McDonald returned to run the show with Dartmouth transfer, Alex Mitola, adding a three point threat. Then there was Glue Guy Patricio Garino, which figured to add cohesion that never evolved for 5th year HC Mike Lonergan. Hard to understand why this three star fundamental team that allows just 69 PPG could never accomplish more. Tonight they go up against an Aztec team, who has put it all together.
San Diego St. limped through the preseason with a record of 7-6 SU after a combined 58 wins the last two years and ascending to the 3rd Round of the NCAA last season. But under the tutelage of 17th year HC Fisher, the Aztecs have put it all together for this event. Before accepting this NIT bid, in the wake of a heartbreaking CCT Final loss to Fresno St., Fisher asked his troops what their level of commitment would be. To a man, they assured Fisher they were united in their goal to win the NIT title. With resounding home court victories by 24 over IPFW, by 15 over Washington, and 16 over Georgia Tech (combined coverage of 34 points), the Aztecs look like the team to beat in this event. If defense wins championships, they should be a lock. For along with a +5.6 rebound margin, San Diego St. allows just 60 PPG, 37% from the field, and 30% from the arc. That’s good enough for us to back them in this spot as the best remaining team in the Tourney.

7-Unit Play. #774 Take Valparaiso (-2) over BYU
(7 p.m., Tuesday, March 29)
The first of two NIT semi-finals, i’ll take defense over pace in this one. Valpo has been one of the more reliable mid-major bets over the last few seasons, and it has a large part to do with the Crusaders’ current senior class. This group is as proven as any in the country, and these veterans have helped get the program to within two wins of a big title to wrap their collegiate careers. A win tonight over BYU means the team’s 30th victory of the season. Valpo has the deeper roster and gets production from more players than the Cougars. Not only that, but Bryce Drew’s team has also shown the ability to win away from home. Valparaiso has 12 road wins on the season, and they won’t be unprepared for the big NYC stage here. I trust the defense of this team as much as I do its upperclassmen. Valpo has won each of its three NIT games by an average of 13 points. BYU has managed to sneak by two of their three games. As accomplished a smaller basketball program as Valparaiso has proven to be, they don’t get opportunities like this very often, and that especially will not be the case when this current senior class graduates. I see them seizing the moment and making sure they participate in Thursday’s title game.
Valparaiso gets by the Cougars, 76-71.

7 Unit Play. Take #767 Over 215 Oklahoma City at Detroit (7:35 p.m.,
Tuesday, March 29)

Since the OKC Thunder lost to San Antonio March 12 the Thunder have rung up
8-Straight victories while averaging over 117ppg. The Pistons get this game
at home and the Pistons are well-rested since they haven't played since
Saturday night and Detroit lost 112-95 and we hot the over in that game.
Detroit has been trending OVER games cashing 7 out of their last 10 games.
This game will be featured by both back courts and last night Russell
Westbrook had a triple-double and if the Pistons want to win this home game
their backcourt better keep up the pace. Another reason why we love this
OVER is that the Pistons defense is questionable and their last 10 games
the Pistons gave up over 100 points in 9 of them. If Westbrook and Durant
go off tonight in Motown then we should have no problem cashing this OVER
ticket and I see both teams hitting the century mark. Detroit is 7-2 O/U in
their last 9 home games and the Pistons are also 4-0 O/U following a SU
loss.

4 Unit Play. #778 Take Columbia (pk) over UC Irvine (7 pm CBSSN) Look for the Lions to close out the season with a victory and a CIT Championship. Both teams have guards that can light it up but this is a tough situation with regards to travel for the Anteaters. Irvine has played three road games thus far and that will catch up with them tonight. Playing in Ivy League venues is always a tough chore and look for the Lions to pull away late. Columbia is 43-21 ATS in their last 64 nonconference games.

8-Unit Play. Take ‘Over’ 129
George Washington vs. San Diego St
(Tuesday, March 29th at 9:30 p.m.)
My spreadsheet has San Diego State winning this game by a final score of 74-70. The key components in this matchup are recent form and style of play.
George Washington has been lighting the scoreboard up in postseason play. They have scored 80+ points in all three games and they have allowed 71+ points in each game as well. They have forced the pace and it has worked out to their advantage so far including a big 82-77 win over SEC power Florida. San Diego State has scored their fair share of points in the postseason as well. They have tallied 79, 93, and 72 points so far this postseason. I look for the Aztecs to continue to score in bunches as GW doesn’t offer much defensive resistance. This is a great matchup in the semi-finals of the NIT tournament. These two teams are from opposite sides of the country but they are both playing some very good offensive basketball right now. Is the stage of Madison Square Garden too big for these teams? Absolutely not. If anything, the juices will be flowing much more. Over is 6-0 in Colonials last 6 overall.Over is 4-0 in Colonials last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.Over is 4-0 in Colonials last 4 games following a straight up win.Over is 5-1 in Colonials last 6 non-conference games.Over is 4-1 in Aztecs last 5 games following a ATS win. I look for a fast paced game and I look for a lot of easy baskets. In the half court offenses, I look for ball movement and offensive rebounding. SDSU crashes the boards really well offensively and I can see them getting a lot of second chance points. I look for a game of streaks and I look for this game to sail over the total with 6 or 7 minutes left in the second half. This will be a fun game to watch and an easy ticket to cash. Take Over.

Just a hunch on this one as both teams have scored better than 68 points per game in 7 of their past contests. They'll be virtually 150-250 people at Mandalay Bay in the inaugural Vegas 16 that started with 8 teams and may be a one and done Tournament.
Greene is out for the Gauchos which takes away a good shooter for UCSB but I'm thinking they should both be able to hit the 62 point plateau “. The rims are friendly at the Mandalay Bay and despite the lack of a crowd the back drop is not bad. Freeman and Bacote are steady scorers for the Monarchs and Breyson and the Gauchos have enough guys that should get their points. Also playing their second game in two days on the same court should help both teams. The schools have also been out here for awhile and have had extensive practice time at the Mandalay Bay as well. I see this one hitting 135.

3* UC Irvine +1 Columbia 7PM CBS College Sports (4* Cal Sports ranking)

To the public this line seems right as Columbia is 24-10 and at home while UC Irvine is 28-9. The difference however is massive as Columbia has played the #254 schedule while Irvine has faced the #104. Another example of the Lions misleading record is obvious when looking at the Ivy standings, Only 3 teams had winning conference records and while Columbia went 10-4 in Ivy action they went 0-4 versus the pair of teams with winning records and 10-0 versus the teams with losing records. The Anteaters meanwhile are among the teams with the most road/neutral wins with a 17-7 record. Irvine has been focused this entire tourney as they knew they were a long shot for the NCAA tourney but getting snubbed by the NIT lit a fire under them. We're well aware that Irvine is playing their 4th straight CBI game away from home but their leader in minutes played per game only averages 30.1 and they have an amazing ten players that average at least 10 minutes per game.

775 George Washington 3.5(-112) Greek (http://pregame.com/lines_odds/default.aspx) vs 776 San Diego St. triple-dime bet

Analysis:GW had a 14 point lead over Phil Martelli and St. Joe's in a second round game of the A-10 Tournament. The Colonials couldn't sustain their hot shooting touch in the second half and lost that game and their opportunity to go to the Big Dance instead of the Hawks.
HC Mike Lonergan got George Washington refocused and the Colonials have ousted Hofstra, Monmouth and Florida to forge into NYC and Madison Square Garden to play San Diego State.
Aztecs come out of a weak ass Mountain West Conference and played all 3 games in the NIT at home. GW's wins were at home vs. Hofstra & Florida but the i “mpressive win was at Monmouth by 17.
I think GW wins the game but I bought it up to 4.......Cavanaugh & Larsen give the Colonials size at 6'9 and 6'10 and Patricio Garino and Joe McDonald can both shoot it especially Garino at 43% from behind the arc. I respect Steve Fischer and the Aztecs but this is a cross country trip and outside of Trey Kell & Jeremy Hemsley SDSU does not have shooters although Matt Shrigley will get in off the bench and is dangerous when left open. All in all, I made this a pick'em game so I'll take GW and the points.
