Saturday Daytime Dominator - Rickenbach NFL 8* Seattle Seahawks (+) @ Atlanta Falcons @ 4:35 ET - I have a ton of respect for the Falcons offense but they're facing a red hot Seattle defense and, make no bones about it, the Atlanta defense is a major weakness. That said, the Seahawks have been moving the ball very well and I just don't see the porous defense of the Falcons as being capable of stopping them. Based on yardage allowed, the Falcons rank 25th in the NFL on defense while the Seahawks rank 5th in the league! Another concern for Atlanta here is that they haven't tough competition since their very first game of December. That was against the Chiefs and Atlanta lost even though they were at home. Since the, the Falcons played 4 games against the two worst teams in their division and the two worst teams in the Seahawks division. The combined record of those 4 teams was 19-45. That certainly didn't help Atlanta in terms of being "game ready" for this one and sometimes the week off can actually hurt a teams rhythm on offense. As for Seattle, they've had to face the top two teams in the NFC North in the past few weeks. The Packers (an ugly loss but an aberration for the Seahawks) and the Lions combined to go 19-13 in the regular season. Seattle did beat the Patriots in New England earlier this season and they are 3-0 ATS as an underdog this season! The Seahawks also won all 4 games this season when facing a team with a winning record and Seattle is 10-2 SU on turf this season! Surprisingly, the Falcons are only 1-4 ATS this season in home games with a posted total of 49.5 points or more. Atlanta has trouble "putting teams away" and has gone 8-18 ATS as a favorite the last 3 seasons and 2-8 ATS when off of a win against a division rival and the Falcons are a long-term 3-11 ATS in playoff games. It's hard to argue against the better defense here and a more "proven team" in terms of playoff experience. The Hawks are hungry! 8* SEATTLE plus the points Saturday afternoon



Saturday Night Special - Rickenbach NFL 8* Houston Texans (+) @ New England Patriots @ 8:15 ET - No one will give the Texans a chance here and I completely understand that, and yet, it has given us very strong line value on Houston in this match-up. Even though hosting a wounded Oakland team last week is nothing like facing a powerful Patriots team in New England, last week's win did quite a lot for Houston. It gives the Texans added confidence in QB Brock Osweiler and it allowed the defense to stay "in the zone" as Houston's D continues to be among the most dominating units in the league. That said, and especially with consideration to the factor that Rob Gronkowski is out, I don't buy into the Pats being more than two TD's better than the Texans. I am certainly well aware of the fact that the Texans go ripped by New England earlier this season and that Tom Brady didn't even play in that game. However, that was a turnover-fueled victory for the Patriots. Houston turned the ball over 3 times (compared to 0 for the Pats) and that was a key factor in why New England won 27-0 at Houston despite the yardage being very nearly equal! In fact, the Texans have now held the Patriots to 313 yards or less in each of the last 2 meetings and it helps that this will be their third time seeing New England in the past 13 months. The Pats, as a result of being 13-3 ATS this season, are simply over-priced here. The Texans defense is fired up about this chance at redemption against the Patriots and the offense is rejuvenated thanks to 4 wins in their last 5 games and Osweiler looking like he definitely learned a few things after being relegated to back-up duty. In the divisional round, #1 seeds have gone just 7-19 ATS the last 13 years. The Pats, of course, are the #1 seed in the AFC, and they have no reason to try and "run up the score" here and against a solid Texans defense I doubt they'll even have the chance. Grab the huge points as this Texans team come into this one with some newfound confidence and a defense that, deservedly, has a swagger in its step! 8* HOUSTON plus the big points Saturday evening

Hondo: No ’Dell, no ‘W’

Hondo took a 3-0 spread record into the final wild-card game Sunday, but dropped the ball with Odell Beckham Jr. and the Giants, who failed to beat the number at Lambeau. Along with his 2-2 mark in the over/unders, Mr. Aitch finished at a solid 5-3 overall, which is respectable but obviously well below Perennially Perfect Paul Schwartz’s lofty standards.

On to the divisionals, where he hopes to add even more success:

Seahawks-Falcons: It’s no easy decision whether to bet against the Seahawks for their ineptitude on the road in the playoffs or against Matt Ryan for his overall postseason failures. The lean is to back Seattle, even though the Falcons are rested and totally healthy. And they proved they can play with the big bad Seahags in Week 6 when they lost narrowly at Century Link, partly because a striped-shirted man missed a P.I. (pass interference) call late in the fourth.

Hondo expects Russell Wilson to make enough plays and the Legion of Boom to make enough noise to keep it close, but it will be the Dirty Birds keeping the dream alive.

Falcons, 28-27

Texans-Patriots: Who is better, Tom Brady or Jacoby Brissett? That’s the question that will be answered once and for all Saturday night in Foxborough when the Patriots and Texans have their big rematch. While Brissett helped engineer a 27-0 crushing of Houston in Week 3, Hondo has a hunch Brady will beat that margin of victory, but not by enough to cover the over.

Unless Tom Terrific and Bill Belichick take a trip to Nantucket and miss the game because they fell asleep while snuggling on the ferry, it should be easy like Sunday morning on Saturday night.

Patriots, 34-6

Steelers-Chiefs: The casual investor’s inclination is to buy into the Steeler hype, which is percolating on high after Sunday’s romp. The Killer Bs — Ben, Bell and Brown — were brilliant and the Steel Curtain was crushing, but sadly, for all you frenzied Terrible Towel wavers, that came at home against a back-up quarterback and a pedestrian defense that couldn’t walk the walk.

Now Pittsburgh goes to Arrowhead Stadium, where Alex Smith isn’t going to turn the ball over three times, and the freezing rain will prevent the Bs from bringing their “A” game. Plus, Big Red, aka Andy Reid, usually doesn’t start screwing up until later in the playoffs

Mike Tomlin won’t have much to cheer about Sunday when his Steelers prove to be the type to go against the hype.

Packers-Cowboys: Mr. Rodgers will be out of his neighborhood, but in his element, while Cowboy super rook Dak Prescott merely will be out of his regular-season comfort zone. In fact, Hondo can envision Prescott struggling so much that Jason Garrett has to call on Tony Romo and his dreadful 2-4 playoff record, which is no way to make America’s Team great again.

Green Bay’s Big Cheese won’t melt under this spotlight.

UCLA comes into tonight’s game with an impressive 17-1 SU record, and the Bruins certainly look like one of the most talented team in the country. However, UCLA is in a poor scheduling and situational spot for tonight’s game in Utah. The Bruins just won 104-89 at Colorado on Thursday night. Now they are on the dreaded back-to-back altitude road set, and Pac 12 teams have been awful in this situation over the years. UCLA also played one of their best offensive games of the season in Colorado while scoring 104 points on 56.5% (35-for-62) shooting from the field and 61.3% (19-for-31) shooting from three-point land. The Bruins will be hard-pressed to match that production, especially considering the poor scheduling spot they are in.

Utah is 12-4 SU on the season, including 9-1 SU on their strong home court. Their lone home loss came to Butler in an extremely slow-paced game. The Utes are playing at a much faster pace this season, so they will definitely get their preferred pace against an up-tempo UCLA team. Utah owns an incredible +17.1 point differential at home this season. The Utes are averaging 83.9 points per game on 50.3% shooting from the field at home this season. Utah’s defense is holding their opponents to just 66.8 points per game on 39.8% shooting from the field and 35.9% shooting from three-point land at home. This is Utah’s biggest game of the season to date, so we’ll back the Utes as a rare home underdog in this game on Saturday.

Texas Tech is having a much better season than expected under new head coach Chris Beard. The Red Raiders come into tonight’s game at Oklahoma with a 13-3 SU record. However, Texas Tech is just 1-2 SU in true road games, including 0-2 in conference road games. The Red Raiders’ wins have mostly come against inferior teams like Houston Baptist, North Texas, Eastern Kentucky, Idaho State, Incarnate Word, Nicholls State, and Longwood just to name a few. Texas Tech’s defense has given up 220 total points in their three true road games this season. Overall, the Red Raiders’ defense is allowing 73.3 points per game on 45.7% shooting from the field away from home this season.

Oklahoma is desperate for a win after losing their last seven games. The Sooners played a brutal schedule during that stretch with games against Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor, Wichita State, and Wisconsin. The Sooners were also playing short-handed as leading scorer Jordan Woodard missed most of those games with an injury. He returned for Oklahoma’s last game, and all reports indicate he’s back to full strength. Oklahoma also has Kameron McGusty back on the court fully healthy: “I'm 100 percent and have come back to my quick first step and being able to move and be active on the ball.” Oklahoma’s recent losing streak can easily be forgiven, and we expect their best game in a long while. We’ll back the Sooners in this game on Saturday night.

The Pelicans are righting the ship as of late and will look to continue this trend tonight versus the Bulls. New Orleans won six of their last nine games, which isn't barn burning, but if you take a closer look you will see it is quite good basketball. The three loses are at Cleveland by eight, versus a hot Atlanta team by five, and at a really good Boston team. Following those three games they won their last two. New Orleans is getting good play from players not named Anthony Davis, which is big because AD always delivers. Look for the Pelicans to win this game outright in Chicago and continue their good play.
