The Walker Group Picks

# 1 IRON VICTORY 9/2

# 8 PLAY MISTY 8/1

# 2 LUNA DANCER 7/5

I think IRON VICTORY is a very good choice. Has run strongly when racing a dirt route race. Had one of the most respectable Equibase Speed Figures of this group in her last race. With a nice class fig average of 72, has one of the best class advantages in this field. PLAY MISTY - Trainer boasts strong win figs at this distance and surface. LUNA DANCER - Parker ought to be able to get this filly to break out early in here. Should be given a shot - I like the figs from the last race.

The Walker Group Picks

# 5 RICKLES 7/5

# 1 TEQUILA'S CHANCE 5/1

# 6 EMBERS 6/1

RICKLES is the top wager in this race. With a reliable 57 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's affair. With a very strong 63 speed figure last time out, will unquestionably be a factor in this contest. He has very good class ratings, averaging 75, and has to be carefully examined in this contest. TEQUILA'S CHANCE - With Barbaran aboard him, this gelding will probably be able to break out early in this event. He has put up decent figs under today's conditions and will probably fare well versus this group. EMBERS - Should be given a shot based on the respectable speed figure posted in the last race. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Gomez running at this distance are the top in this group.

RACE #9 - SARATOGA RACE COURSE - 5:18 PM EASTERN POST

8½ FURLONGS TURF GRADE III TWO YEAR OLDS STAKES $150,000.00 PURSE

#10 TRUMPI
#11 SEABHAC
#3 CATHOLIC BOY
#9 EVALUATOR

For 2-year-olds on the turf, the With Anticipation was inaugurated in 2005 and named in honor of the gelding who won five Grade 1 races and more than $2.6 million for Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard. A gray son of Relaunch owned by George Strawbridge, With Anticipation made his first start as a 2-year-old in 1997, but didn't hit his best stride until 2001, when he began campaigning primarily on the grass. The following year, at age 7, he won three straight Grade 1 events, the United Nations Handicap, his second straight Sword Dancer Invitational, and his second straight Man o' War. He was retired in 2004. Here in the 13th renewal of this graded stakes test, #10 TRUMPI, the overall speed and pace profile leader in this field, comes off a maiden-breaking, "POWER RUN WIN" in his "first asking," racing at today's distance of 8½ furlongs on the turf. Jockey Junior Alvarado was in his irons for that win, 24 days ago here at "The Spa," which produced a 1000% return on investment in the process, and is back today for his 2nd ride, gunning for back-to-back "Circle Trips." #11 SEABHAC, a 4-1 shot, is still a maiden, comes off a "POWER RUN PLACE" finish in his respective "first asking," losing by 1½ length to TRUMPI in that race.

#5 BOULE (ML=5/1)
#1 TIZ THE LIGHT (ML=12/1)
#2 PRESUMPTUOUS (ML=9/2)

BOULE - After the event aboard this animal on Jul 14th, the jock is going to be acquainted with the filly much better. Have to like the early speed on this one. No one else may even be close. This horse could be a potential overlay in this race at M/L odds of 5/1. Finished fifth in last race at Belmont Park but was close at the finish. Trying to break maiden moving from a turf race to the main track. I think Mott will have her in good shape for today's contest. TIZ THE LIGHT - When this jockey and conditioner partner up you have to take a look. Franco and Nevin have been wonderful together. PRESUMPTUOUS - Quite frequently, I play a maiden that finished runner up easily ahead of the 3rd place horse in her last effort. Trainer Bond moves this one down the class ladder to face much lower class horses. Look for a strong race with this class drop. This filly is in good form. Ran second on Aug 23rd. Trainer, Bond, has been deliberate with this filly off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 WISE STRIKE (ML=3/1), #3 SEAM (ML=7/2), #7 YAALAIL (ML=6/1),

WISE STRIKE - Hasn't hit the board in any short distance affairs recently. Unlikely to see her doing it this time out either. SEAM - In any race of 7 furlongs, I like to wager on a contender that has been sharp in short distance contests recently. YAALAIL - No value on this thoroughbred at the probable odds of 6/1.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - PRESUMPTUOUS - Bond must think this fine animal is in fine fettle to bring her back so quickly.

#6 ELLAS MY LOVE (ML=5/1)
#3 COOLER MIKE (ML=10/1)

ELLAS MY LOVE - At a 25 pct win rate for 2 year olds, this one's sire is one of the most solid in the group of horses. COOLER MIKE - Contreras was aboard this gelding last time out and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. A thoroughbred coming back this rapidly after a solid race is a good signal.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 AHEADBYACENTURY (ML=2/1), #1 ESKIMINZIN (ML=3/1), #7 STORMFUHR (ML=4/1),

AHEADBYACENTURY - This stretch-runner will probably be coming much too late to make a mark in this event. ESKIMINZIN - This sustainer should have a rough go of it to be along with the lack of pace in this race. STORMFUHR - When checking today's class rating, he will have to register a much better fig than last out to vie in this dirt sprint.

Have to go with #6 ELLAS MY LOVE on the win end if we get at least 7/5 odds

Comp play for Wednesday is on the Tigers and Rockies to make it 3 games played Under the total in as many days.

Just 7 runs combined on Monday for the Under. A few more last night, as the teams reached 10 total runs, but landed Under the total again.

The Tigers have now played all 5 on this road trip Under the total, while the Rockies enter Wednesday play having held Low in 3 straight and 9 of their last 11 games overall.

Justin Verlander has seen his last pair of starts, and 7 of his last 10 starts overall hold Under the total, while Chad Bettis has seen all 3 of his 2017 starts play Under the posted price.

Hard to argue those numbers.

Tigers-Rockies Under.

Wednesday freebie is the Phillies over the Braves.

They cannot beat them! I am speaking of Philadelphia when they face Atlanta.

Last night the Braves got a reprieve from Mother Nature, as the rain forced the teams to play a pair today.

Philly won on Monday, 6-1. That makes 7 straight series losses this year at the hands of the Phillies for Atlanta, and it also puts the Bravos at 2-12 in the season series!

Overall, the Braves have lost 3 straight and 7 of their last 10, while the Phils are playing some free-and-easy baseball, claiming 2 of 3 off the Cubs over the weekend, and racking up 4 wins over their last 6 games played.

It will be RA Dickey opposing Jerad Eickhoff in the opener, and right now it could be Greg Maddux against Dicky Noles, and I would still back the Phillies based on the season series dominance.

Philly the call.

Tremendous value in this play. Mariners were shut out 4-0 as Dylan Bundy pitched a great game. Mariners have lost 4 straight Orioles have won 6 straight. But we get the better pitcher in Ariel Miranda who has had issues with stamina lately but his opponent Ubaldo Jimenez is just plain bad. Even with losing 4 straight the Mariners are just 1.5 games out so today is a must win to snap this streak. This is also a revenge game for Miranda who was traded from the Orioles and this is his first start again'st them. Jimenez is also 2-4 with a 6.50 ERA versus the Orioles. Take the nice plus money here and invest a 9 unit play on the Mariners today at 3:05pm.

MLB | White Sox vs Twins
Play on: Twins -1½ -115 at 5Dimes

Twins -1.5

This play just missed out on our premium card. We picked the Twins at -1.5 on Tuesday night, and it paid out, and we think it will again on Wednesday night.

On the mound for the White Sox is Derek Holland who has been terrible this year. He comes into this game with a 7-13 record and an ERA of 6.05.

In two of his last three starts he went under three innings and gave up seven earned runs. That isn't a good combination when you are facing a Minnesota Twins team that is crushing the ball.

On the mound for the Twins is Jose Berrios who has done enough this year to keep the Twins in games.

He is facing a White Sox team who don't have a lot of power in their line up and that should help keep the ball in the ballpark.

Some trends to note. White Sox are 0-6 in Hollands last 6 road starts. Twins are 5-0 in their last 5 home games.

Back the Twins -1.5.

San Francisco vs. San Diego
Pick: San Diego -130

Padres LHP Travis Wood must have some mixed feelings about his situation right now. On the one hand, the 30-year-old veteran was traded from a playoff contender (the Royals) to a team that hasn't had anything close to a winning season in almost a decade. On the other hand, since he was traded to the Padres, Wood seems to have secured a full-time rotation job for the first time since 2014 having started in all six of the games he's appeared in. Wood was victimized by Giancarlo Stanton in his last start as all five runs he surrendered to the Marlins were driven in by the Major League home run leader (Stanton homered twice in that one). Needless to say, the Giants don't have Barry Bonds any more, or anyone else that is remotely close to Stanton at the plate. And Wood gets this start at his new home, which is a place that he really seems to like. The lefthander owns a 2.00 ERA in three starts at Petco Park since he was traded. The Giants will go with LHP Ty Blach, who will attempt to end his worst slump of the season as Blach is 0-3 with an 8.82 ERA in his last three starts. The Giants are 1-5 in their last six road starts vs. a team with a southpaw starter.

Now about this complimentary winner

My free play is an early game, as I like the Baltimore Orioles to get things done over the Seattle Mariners.

Baltimore continues its ride after sweeping the American League East-leading Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, by extending their win streak to six games. Now sitting two games above .500, the Orioles are 1 1/2 games back from the second wild-card spot and they're 40-26 at home.

The momentum is real, and in hosting a west coast team that lost two straight in the Bronx against the New York Yankees over the weekend, and a third and fourth in a row in this series, I think the Orioles will continue to take advantage of a weary Mariners team.

Seattle, which will be playing its 12th road game in 13 days after previous trips to Tampa Bay, Atlanta and the Bronx.

I'm not listing pitchers. Just look for Baltimore to roll past Seattle in this one, while laying a cheap price doing so.

Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking: Hyun-Jin Ryu, Los Angeles Dodgers (5-6, 3.34 ERA, $62)

This almost just seems unfair at this point. Ryu is the latest Dodgers starter to be absolutely dealing lately, making it easier to forget the Dodgers have kept winning at this ridiculous pace despite the fact Clayton Kershaw hasn’t pitched since July 23rd.

The Dodgers have won Ryu’s last six starts, with the lefty posting a 3-0 record, a 1.54 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. Ryu and the Dodgers are just slight -111 road favorites tonight in Arizona.

Slumping: Ty Blach, San Francisco Giants (8-10, 4.68 ERA, $-158)

One of the worst seasons in recent Giants’ memory can’t be over soon enough and southpaw Ty Blach might be feeling the same.

Blach has stumbled after a solid start to the season, going 0-3 with a whopping 8.82 ERA, a 1.84 WHIP and recording more walks than strikeouts in his last three starts. It’s gotten to the point where Blach and the Giants are +115 road underdogs at the Padres (who have clearly been better in 2017).

Weather To Keep An Eye On

Again, thoughts and prayers for everyone in southern Texas and Louisiana. Please donate to the American Red Cross (follow the link for simple donation instructions).

After yesterday's rain soaked day that really messed with games in the Northeast (and of course in Texas) there is no precipitation in the baseball forecast for Wednesday.

Wind will not be a factor across the league with the strongest being a 7-8 mile per hour cross-breeze at Target Field where the Twins will take on the White Sox.

Ump Of The Day

Sean Barber will be calling balls and strikes today at Rogers Centre in Toronto where the Blue Jays will take on the Red Sox.

Barber isn't a high volume home plate umpire, in fact, today will be only his 11th game behind the dish in 2017. When he does work the plate he really favors the home team. The hosts have won six of his last seven, are 7-3 on the season, and are 25-14 (56 percent) dating back to the beginning of the 2015 season.

The Jays are -120 favorites today on home soil...err...grass...err...carpet.

As I told you yesterday, it is tough to go against the league's most dominating baseball team, but I liked the Arizona Diamondbacks to upset the Los Angeles Dodgers last night. I'm taking the Snakes as my free play tonight, as the National League West rivals continue their three-game series at Chase Field in Phoenix.

I'm not listing pitchers, as I believe Arizona's five-game win streak will provide enough momentum, just as I said last night in going against Rich Hill, who had to be the easiest go-against I've seen in quite some time. Anyone who thought he was mentally ready to bounce back doesn't have a clue.

The Diamondbacks have not only won five straight, but they're 43-23 at home after last night's 7-6 win over L.A. They're two games in front of the Colorado Rockies for the top wild-card spot, which all they can hope for at this point, since their 18 games back of the Dodgers in the West.

The Snakes have the fifth-best home batting average (.272) in the bigs, and third-best runs scored (367) at home.

Take Arizona here, as it shocks L.A. again.

My free play for Wednesday night is on the New York Yankees against the Cleveland Indians, and in this game I want you listing starting pitchers Trevor Bauer and Jaime Garcia.

Bauer himself said he didn’t have his best stuff his last time out, and even though he still picked up the win against the Boston Red Sox last Thursday, he allowed four runs, seven hits and three walks. Now I know this kid has not taken a loss since July 16, but this is a revenge game for the Yankees and Garcia.

New York's left-hander has yet to record a win in four starts, since the Yankees acquired him from the Twins on July 30 - including an Aug. 4 setback in Cleveland, where he was tagged for six runs on five hits and four walks. The Yankees have won two of the four games Garcia has started, and it's time for him to win one.

5* YANKEES (Garcia over Bauer)

Dave's Wednesday Free Play:

1* on Los Angeles Angels -139

The Key: The Los Angeles Angels are only one game back in the AL wild card race. A big reason why has been the performance of Parker Bridwell, who is 7-2 with a 3.03 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 13 starts this year. The Angels have gone 11-2 (+12.6 units) in his 13 starts. Kendall Graveman is 1-4 with a 6.39 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 6 road starts this year for the A's. The A's are 0-5 in Graveman's last 5 road starts. Oakland is 18-41 in its last 59 road games. The Angels are 9-2 in their last 11 home meetings with the A's. Take Los Angeles.

This game features the 66-65 Marlins and the 8-51 Nationals. The Marlins are making a late run at the last wild card spot and are just 5.5 games back. The Nationals are 14 games up on the Marlins and are not gonna risk injury to anyone and that includes starter Stephen Srasburg who has looked good since coming back from injury but I don't see him going more then 5 innings today. Adam Conley is a pitcher you never know what you are gonna get he's either really on or really off. I can't pass on the hot hitting Marlins who are fighting hard for a spot in the Playoffs and love them here at +200 a big time value. 15* Marlins.

Jack's Free Pick Wednesday: San Diego Padres -130

The San Diego Padres are 34-31 at home this season while profiting backers 6.8 units. The San Francisco Giants are 22-46 on the road while losing backers 23 units. I think it's worth laying a little juice to back the Padres at home here Wednesday night.

Travis Wood comes in pitching well, going 1-0 with a 3.71 ERA in his last three starts. Wood has posted a 3.82 ERA in six career starts against San Francisco. He is no ace, but I trust him here to have a great start against this weak Giants lineup.

Ty Blach is having a decent season overall at 8-10 with a 4.67 ERA in 22 starts. But he is 3-5 with a 5.50 ERA and 1.473 WHIP in nine road starts this season, and 0-3 with an 8.82 ERA and 1.837 WHIP in his last three starts. The Giants are 0-3 in Blach's three career starts against San Diego.

Wood is 9-1 (+9.1 Units) against the money line in home games vs. teams whose hitters strike out 7 or more times/game over the last three seasons. The Giants are 1-5 in Blach's last six road starts. San Diego is 6-2 in the last eight meetings. Bet the Padres Wednesday.

10* FREE MLB PICK (Rockies -107)

Colorado is worth a look here as a short home favorite against the Tigers on Wednesday. Detroit is getting way to much respect here due to the fact that they are sending out Justin Verlander. The Tigers have been atrocious on the road this season and with little to nothing to play for figure to continue to struggle away from home down the stretch. Verlander is coming off a couple of strong starts, but is a mere 3-6 with a 5.02 ERA and 1.435 WHIP in 14 road starts (3-11 team record). On the flip side of this, Colorado will give the ball to Chad Bettis, who has a respectable 3.79 ERA in 3 starts since joining the rotation earlier this month. Two of those starts have come at home and he was excellent in both of those outings, giving up a combined 3 runs on 14 hits in 14 innings (1.93 ERA). Give me the Rockies -107!

Free Pick on Baltimore Orioles -

Baltimore has won 6 straight to move within 1.5 games of the final Wild Card spot in the AL and I look for them to continue their winning ways Wednesday afternoon against the Mariners. While the Orioles are playing some of their best baseball of the season, Seattle has gone into a funk here of late and lost 4 straight. Not a big surprise given the circumstances, as this is now their 12th straight game on a grueling 12-game road trip.

I know the numbers aren't great for Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez, but the same can be said for Seattle's starter Ariel Miranda. This comes down to rolling with the hot team at the plate. Baltimore is coring 6.9 runs/game and hitting .313 with a .350 OBP over their last 7 games. The Mariners on the other hand are scoring 3.0 runs/game and hitting a mere .203 with a .264 OBP in their last 7.

Seattle is 10-22 in their last 32 road games against a team that's won more than 60% of their home games, while the Orioles are 6-1 in their last 7 at home against a left-handed starter, 61-26 in their last 87 home games against a team with a losing record and 30-10 in Jimenez's last 40 home starts. Take Baltimore!

I don't agree that the Toronto Blue Jays should be favored here. They have gone 2-9 in their last 11 games to fall to 61-71 on the season. They are starting to realize they have nothing to play for now, and it's showing up in their performances. The Red Sox are trying to lock down the AL East. They have enjoyed the Rogers Centre in Toronto, going 6-0 in their last six trips there. Rick Porcello has been at his best on the road this season with a 3.96 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 11 road starts. J.A. Happ is 0-2 with an 8.18 ERA in his last two starts. He has given up 10 earned runs and 20 base runners in 11 innings during this stretch. The Red Sox are 8-2 in their last 10 meetings.

Matt Carpenter has pledged to donate $10,000 to the relief fund for the flood-ravaged region of Houston with every homer he hits for the remainder of the season. The Texas native gladly dipped into his wallet after belting a two-run shot in the opener and looks add to that total in the finale of the abbreviated two-game series versus the host Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday afternoon.

Carpenter is batting a robust .320 with four homers and 12 runs scored this season against Milwaukee, but is just 3-for-13 in his career versus Wednesday starter Chase Anderson. Paul DeJong drove in three runs in Tuesday's 10-2 romp while extending his hitting streak to six games for St. Louis, which posted its third win in nine outings to reside five games in back of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central. Domingo Santana has multi-hit performances in back-to-back outings and in three of his last five for Milwaukee, which has dropped three of five to sit 3 1/2 games behind the Cubs. The 25-year-old Dominican is batting .286 versus Wednesday starter and fellow countryman Carlos Martinez.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (10-9, 3.48 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Chase Anderson (7-3, 2.87)

Martinez held his opponents to three runs or fewer in his fifth consecutive start on Thursday, but a costly error on an attempted double-play ball forced him to settle for a no-decision after seven strong innings versus San Diego. The 25-year-old had won four of his previous five decisions, however the setback in that stretch came at the hands of Milwaukee on Aug. 1. Martinez owns a 1-2 mark versus the Brewers this season after allowing nine runs on 15 hits in 17 12/3 innings.

Anderson sustained his first loss since June 11 on Friday despite yielding two runs in five innings of a 3-1 setback at the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 29-year-old has allowed two runs or fewer in eight of his last nine starts overall and recorded a pair of no-decisions versus St. Louis earlier this season. Anderson permitted one run in six innings against the Cardinals on April 22 before allowing four in 4 2/3 innings on May 4.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee LF Eric Thames went deep in the series opener and has five homers versus St. Louis this season.

2. Cardinals OF Randal Grichuk is 2-for-22 with seven strikeouts in his last seven games.

3. Brewers OF Ryan Braun is riding an 11-game hitting streak at home.

Manny Machado is giving the Seattle Mariners fits while keeping the Baltimore Orioles in the mix for the American League's second wild-card berth. The 25-year-old Machado looks to send the Orioles to their seventh straight win and a three-game sweep of the visiting Mariners on Wednesday afternoon when the clubs wrap up their set at Camden Yards.

Machado followed up his three-hit performance in the opener with a pair of solo homers in Tuesday's 4-0 triumph, improving to 9-for-22 with seven RBIs versus Seattle this season. Welington Castillo added a solo shot Tuesday and is 4-for-7 with three RBIs in the series for Baltimore, which has outscored the opposition 44-17 during its winning streak and resides 1 1/2 games in back of Minnesota for the final wild-card slot. The Mariners find themselves three games behind the Twins after being outscored 27-10 during their four-game losing skid. Kyle Seager mustered the lone hit off Dylan Bundy with a bunt single on Tuesday and has two hits in the series heading into Wednesday's tilt versus starter Ubaldo Jimenez, against whom he is 2-for-11 in his career.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Ariel Miranda (8-6, 4.62 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (5-9, 6.57)

Miranda will get his first look at the team that shuffled him to Seattle at last year's trade deadline. The 28-year-old Cuban pitched well in his last outing on Friday, as he scattered two hits over 4 2/3 scoreless innings before exiting after 99 pitches with a no-decision. The outing was a positive one for Miranda, who owned a 1-2 mark with 35 runs allowed in his previous eight outings.

Jimenez has dropped back-to-back outings in horrific fashion, as he yielded six runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings on Aug. 16 in a 7-6 setback at Seattle before surrendering three homers in five frames six days later in a 6-4 loss versus Oakland. "You'd like to say take the first inning away, but you can't take those away," manager Buck Showalter said of the 33-year-old Dominican permitting two homers in the first against the Athletics. Jimenez has kept Nelson Cruz (2-for-19) under wraps, although Robinson Cano (10-for-20, two homers) has had his number.

WALK-OFFS

1. Baltimore 2B Jonathan Schoop, who launched a solo shot on Tuesday, boasts three homers in his last eight games and has hit safely in nine of his last 10.

2. Cano is 0-for-7 in the series and 1-for-12 in his last five contests overall.

3. Orioles CF Adam Jones has five runs scored during his six-game hitting streak.

Justin Verlander has thrived in interleague play and looks to improve his record to 31-5 when the Detroit Tigers conclude their three-game series against the host Colorado Rockies on Wednesday afternoon. Verlander's .857 winning percentage leads all active pitchers with 15 or more decisions, and his next win will tie him with Bartolo Colon for most interleague victories among active pitchers.

The 34-year-old Verlander is making his second career start at Coors Field, and the first went well as he gave up one run and four hits en route to a complete-game victory in 2011. Detroit will be without slugger Miguel Cabrera (back) for the second straight game and the club has an off-day Thursday to give him more time to recover. Rockies All-Star Nolan Arenado clubbed a three-run homer in Tuesday's 7-3 victory to reach 30 blasts for the third consecutive season. Jonathan Lucroy is 5-for-8 with a homer in the series for Colorado, which has won four of its last six contests to open a four-game lead over Milwaukee for the National League's second wild-card berth.

TV: 3:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Justin Verlander (9-8, 3.90 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Chad Bettis (0-1, 3.79)

Verlander has won four of his last five decisions and allowed fewer than three runs in five of his last six outings. His interleague reputation has held up this season as he has gone 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in three such turns. Verlander is 2-0 with a 1.99 ERA in three career starts against Colorado but has had mixed results against Mark Reynolds (6-for-21, one homer, 10 strikeouts).

Bettis is making his fourth start of the season since returning from his courageous battle with testicular cancer. The 28-year-old lost to Atlanta in his last turn as he served up two homers while giving up five runs and six hits in five innings. Bettis has posted a 1.93 ERA in two starts at Coors Field this season and is 12-6 with a 4.58 ERA in 30 career home outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rockies RF Carlos Gonzalez (ankle) missed consecutive starts but contributed a sacrifice fly as a pinch-hitter on Tuesday.

2. Detroit SS Jose Iglesias is hitless in six at-bats in the series and 0-for-9 over his last three games.

3. Colorado SS Trevor Story recorded two hits on Tuesday and is 7-for-18 during his five-game hitting streak.

The Philadelphia Phillies get an extra opportunity Wednesday to continue beating up on the Atlanta Braves as they host a doubleheader after Tuesday’s scheduled contest was postponed due to rain. The rainout provided the Braves a one-day reprieve to try and figure out some way to beat their National League East rivals, who have defeated Atlanta in all eight meetings at Citizens Bank Park this season and 12 of their 14 overall matchups.

Philadelphia rookie Rhys Hoskins saw his home-run streak snapped at five games in Monday’s series-opening 6-1 victory but provided a go-ahead RBI double. The top of the Phillies’ lineup has feasted on Atlanta pitching this year, as leadoff hitter Cesar Hernandez is batting .333 while Freddy Galvis owns a .321 average. Atlanta is a major league-worst 12-27 since reaching .500 on July 17, thanks to a pitching staff that has allowed 55 home runs and 152 walks while posting a 5.18 ERA in that stretch. Brandon Phillips enters the doubleheader one hit shy of 2,000 for his career and looks to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Julio Teheran (8-11, 4.90 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Mark Leiter Jr. (2-3, 3.86)

Once considered the ace of Atlanta’s rotation, Teheran seeks a strong finish to the most inconsistent season of his career. Two of his last three starts – both against Colorado – have provided glimmers of hope as the 26-year-old allowed only two runs and nine hits over 14 1/3 innings, but he surrendered four and eight versus the Reds in between those two outings. Teheran has struggled in two starts against the Phillies this season, losing both while allowing 13 runs and 14 hits in 9 2/3 frames.

Leiter carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his last start and exited with five strikeouts and one hit allowed in seven scoreless innings Sunday against Miami. He struggled in his previous outing eight days earlier, allowing eight runs - four earned - and seven hits across five frames in a loss at San Diego. The 26-year-old Leiter has bounced between the rotation and the bullpen, posting a 3.18 ERA in five starts compared to a 4.50 ERA in 16 relief appearances.

WALK-OFFS

1. Braves CF Ender Inciarte has hit safely in 25 of his last 30 games, and his 164 hits this season ranked third in the majors entering Tuesday’s action.

2. Atlanta SS Dansby Swanson is batting .367 over his last 17 contests.

3. Hoskins drove in his 25th run of the season in his 19th career game on Monday, the second-fewest amount of contests needed to reach 25 RBIs among players making their debut since the statistic became official in 1920.

Washington Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg has more wins against the Miami Marlins than any other opponent and looks to pad his numbers when the teams conclude a three-game series on Wednesday afternoon at Nationals Park. Strasburg beat the Marlins with seven innings of two-run ball on Opening Day to improve to 13-7 lifetime against them.

Washington has outscored Miami 19-5 in the first two games of the series to join the Los Angeles Dodgers as the only team in the majors to win 80 games. Third baseman Anthony Rendon had a pair of hits and drove in four runs in Tuesday's 8-3 victory to reach 85 RBIs for the season, tying his career high established last year in 156 games. Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton belted his major league-leading 51st homer overall and 18th this month, tying the record (Rudy York, 1937) for the most blasts in August, and Miami is 5 1/2 games out of the National League's second wild card. The reigning NL Player of the Week, Stanton has enjoyed plenty of success against Strasburg while batting .366 (15-for-41) with three homers, eight doubles and 11 RBIs.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins LH Adam Conley (6-5, 5.17 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (10-4, 3.10)

Conley escaped with a no-decision last time out against San Diego despite getting knocked around for five runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old was overpowering in his previous turn against the New York Mets, notching 11 strikeouts while yielding one run and three hits in seven innings. He was tagged for five runs and 11 hits at Washington on Aug. 9, falling to 1-3 with an 8.22 versus the Nationals.

Strasburg was in the midst of a masterful performance at Houston last time out before cramps led to his departure, but he exited after pitching six scoreless innings of three-hit ball. He has permitted two earned runs and seven hits while racking up 15 strikeouts over 12 innings since returning from the disabled list. Strasburg must be wary of Marcell Ozuna, who is 11-for-31 with two homers and seven RBIs against him.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals SS Trea Turner (wrist) went 1-for-4 in his first game since June 29.

2. Marlins 2B Dee Gordon is 6-for-13 with four runs scored over the past three games.

3. Nationals C Matt Wieters is 5-for-8 in the series.

The Cleveland Indians have put together three winning streaks of at least five since the All-Star break, but keeping their current five-game run intact will take some doing. Because of Tuesday's rainout, the American League Central-leading Indians will wrap up their three-game set at the New York Yankees with a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

Winners of 14 of 18, Cleveland is off Thursday but will head to Detroit to play yet another doubleheader on Friday, leaving manager Terry Francona with some roster decisions. "We're going to try to space out the guys a little bit," said Francona, whose team plays the next 10 on the road. "I'd rather not everybody play all four, just because I don't think that makes much sense. But we'll see how it goes." Slumping Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge was held out of Monday's 6-2 setback to the Indians and was not in the lineup Tuesday, but manager Joe Girardi told reporters the slugger will play at least one game Wednesday. Girardi also shuffled his pitching staff, opting to hold back CC Sabathia one day to start Thursday's opener of a four-game set against AL East leader Boston, which holds a four-game edge over New York.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians LH Ryan Merritt (1-0, 1.76 ERA) vs. Yankees LH Jordan Montgomery (7-6, 4.00)

Merritt was called up from Triple-A Columbus to make a spot start last week and earned his first victory of the season, tossing 6 2/3 scoreless innings and allowing seven hits to beat Kansas City. The 25-year-old Texan was sent back to the minors after that outing but will be summoned to start the nightcap. Merritt's other two starts this season were both at Minnesota and lasted a combined 7 2/3 innings.

Montgomery yielded his rotation spot to recently acquired Jaime Garcia and has not pitched beyond 5 1/3 innings since earning his last win on July 25, when he gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings against Cincinnati. He has not factored in the decision in each of his last three starts, including five innings of one-run ball at Cleveland on Aug. 5. Montgomery is 4-2 with a 3.75 ERA in 11 starts at Yankee Stadium.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians 1B-DH Carlos Santana has homered in three straight games.

2. Judge's batting average has dipped 49 points to .280 since the All-Star break.

3. Indians RHP Josh Tomlin was set to come off the disabled list for Wednesday's start but will be held back until the weekend.

Rick Porcello led the major leagues in victories with 22 last season while J.A. Happ was tied for second, but their fortunes have changed dramatically this year. Porcello attempts to avoid his major league-worst 16th loss when he takes the mound for the visiting Boston Red Sox as they go for a three-game sweep versus Happ and the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night.

After getting swept at home by Baltimore to extend their losing streak to four, the Red Sox have won two straight to open a four-game lead over the New York Yankees atop the American League East. Hanley Ramirez went deep in Tuesday's 3-0 win to reach 20 homers for the eighth season while Eduardo Nunez and Andrew Benintendi have four hits apiece in the first two games of the series. Designated hitter Kendrys Morales had two of the four hits for Toronto, which has dropped three in a row and nine of 11 to fall 10 games under .500. Happ, who was unbeaten in three starts against Boston last year en route to a 20-4 record, has lost 10 of his 19 starts this season.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (8-15, 4.57 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (6-10, 4.10)

Porcello's three-start winning streak came to a crash halt with a dreadful outing versus Baltimore on Friday, when he was hammered for 11 runs on 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings. He has surrendered a career-worst 31 homers, including multiple shots in eight of his last 16 turns. Jose Bautista is 16-for-42 with four homers against Porcello while Justin Smoak is 7-for-27 with three homers and nine RBIs.

Happ opened the month with a three-start winning streak, permitting one run in each, but he has been hit hard in losing each of his last two outings. He was charged with 10 runs and 17 hits over 11 innings while falling to Minnesota and the Chicago Cubs. Xander Bogaerts is 1-for-16 versus Happ, who is 5-3 with a 3.66 ERA against the Red Sox after pitching five innings of two-run ball at Boston last month.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia (knee) will run the bases Wednesday and, barring a setback, could return this weekend versus the Yankees.

2. Bautista is 5-for-48 with 20 strikeouts against Boston this season.

3. Red Sox LHP David Price (elbow) will throw off a mound on Wednesday for the first time since July 22.

The Rangers were outscored 19-7 in a three-game sweep at the hands of Oakland but bounced back with a 12-2 triumph on Tuesday, scoring 11 runs in a span of three innings as they remained three games behind Minnesota for the second wild card in the American League. Joey Gallo returned from the concussion list to belt a two-run homer, Shin-Soo Choo recorded three hits - including a three-run blast - and four RBIs and Elvis Andrus went 4-for-5 as Texas improved to 4-4 on its 10-game road trip. Houston still possesses a comfortable double-digit lead in the AL West despite having lost five of its last eight contests. Jose Altuve leads the majors with a .355 batting average after going 1-for-4 on Tuesday while rookie J.D. PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Andrew Cashner (7-9, 3.44 ERA) vs. Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (11-2, 2.58)

Cashner's winless streak reached three starts last Wednesday as he did not factor in the decision on the road against the Los Angeles Angels after giving up four runs in six innings. The 30-year-old Texan had won three straight outings and four of five prior to the drought and had allowed fewer than three earned runs in four consecutive turns before facing the Angels. Cashner has had no success against Houston this season, losing all four of his previous starts - including an outing on Aug. 13 in which he yielded two runs over seven frames.

Keuchel has bounced back nicely from a road loss to the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 8 in which he was battered for eight runs on 10 hits and three walks over four innings, going 2-0 while allowing three earned runs over 20 2/3 frames in three outings. One of those turns was against Cashner and the Rangers on Aug. 13, when the 29-year-old native of Oklahoma gave up one run and six hits in 6 2/3 frames of a victory. Keuchel also scattered three hits over six scoreless innings of a win at Texas on June 2 and has thrown two of his four career shutouts against the Rangers but is just 7-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 20 career starts versus the club.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros 3B Alex Bregman had his eight-game hitting streak and string of four straight multi-hit performances snapped Sunday but picked up where he left off on Tuesday, recording three of his team's nine hits.

2. The Rangers optioned OF Ryan Rua to Triple-A Round Rock to make room on the roster for Gallo and also sent RHP Tanner Scheppers outright to the Express.

3. Texas C Robinson Chirinos is riding a 12-game hitting streak after going 1-for-2 with two walks on Tuesday.

Anthony Rizzo remained hot on Tuesday with a pair of doubles among his three hits in the Cubs' 4-1 victory. Rizzo is 10-for-18 during his five-game hitting streak and is batting .439 with 23 RBIs over his last 15 contests. Pittsburgh hopes Ivan Nova can help cool off Rizzo and register his third win over the Cubs this season when he opposes Jose Quintana in the series finale. The fading Pirates have lost 12 of their last 17 games, including seven of their last nine on the road.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Ivan Nova (11-11, 3.97 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jose Quintana (8-11, 4.49)

Nova has struggled in the second half, going 2-5 with a 6.00 ERA in eight starts. The 30-year-old Dominican has lost three of his last four turns, including his last outing at Cincinnati in which he allowed seven runs - five earned - in five innings. Nova is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in three career starts against the Cubs.

Quintana is 4-3 with a 4.50 ERA in eight starts since being acquired from the crosstown White Sox. The 28-year-old Colombian was dominant in his Cubs debut and posted quality starts in his first three outings, but he was tagged for six runs and nine hits over five innings in a loss at Philadelphia in his last turn. Quintana’s only previous start against the Pirates was in 2015, when he allowed three runs and nine hits over six frames in a loss.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs RHP Wade Davis converted his 27th consecutive save opportunity to start the season on Tuesday, passing Ryan Dempster for the longest streak in franchise history.

The 24-year-old has batted a robust .387 this month with six blasts - all against the White Sox - to help the Twins remain in possession of the second American League wild-card spot, as they sit one game ahead of the Los Angeles Angels. Chicago slugger Jose Abreu went 4-for-4 with a walk on Tuesday and is 8-for-13 over his last four contests. The White Sox have dropped 17 of their last 21 games on the road, where they are a porous 22-44 overall.

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Derek Holland (7-13, 6.05 ERA) vs. Twins RH Jose Berrios (11-6, 4.04)

Holland defeated the Twins on Thursday, when he gave up one run and three hits over six innings to improve to 3-6 with a 5.29 ERA in 13 career appearances (12 starts) against Minnesota. The 30-year-old again could find the terrain tougher at Target Field, where he is 0-4 with a 7.77 ERA in five career outings. Holland is 3-6 with an ugly 7.02 ERA in 13 road appearances (12 starts) this season.

Berrios struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings when matched up against Holland last week but allowed five runs - three earned - and four hits while taking the loss. The 22-year-old is highly comfortable at home, where he has reeled off six straight victories and stands 7-1 with a 2.87 ERA in eight turns. Berrios is 2-1 with a 2.95 ERA in three career starts against Chicago.

WALK-OFFS

2. Chicago RHP Reynaldo Lopez (back) tossed a smooth bullpen session and could be activated later this week.

Hosmer has hit safely in eight of his last nine games, going 13-for-31 during that stretch, and Lorenzo Cain continues to haunt the Rays as he is 9-for-19 in the season series after notching a pair of hits on Tuesday. Jason Vargas hopes to duplicate his first outing against Tampa Bay this season in which he tossed seven scoreless frames when he takes the mound in the rubber match of the series against Jake Odorizzi. The Royals hopped over the Rays in the American League wild-card standings, staying three games behind Minnesota, while Tampa Bay dropped 3 ½ back after suffering its third loss in nine contests. Odorizzi is winless in his last five starts - including all four since returning from the disabled list - and has worked more than four innings just once during that stretch. The 27-year-old, who started his major-league career with the Royals in 2012, gave up three runs, three hits and four walks over 3 2/3 frames of a no-decision at St. Louis on Friday. Hosmer is 5-for-15 with a homer versus Odorizzi, who is 1-4 with a 4.65 ERA against Kansas City.

Vargas is winless in his last two starts, permitting eight runs over 9 2/3 innings, and has not been the same pitcher since his All-Star Game appearance as he has gone 2-5 with a 6.69 ERA in eight turns. The 34-year-old has completed six innings once in his last five outings, yielding 20 runs across 25 1/3 frames while posting a 1-4 mark. Blach has been rocked while losing each of his last three starts as he has posted an unsightly 8.82 ERA during that stretch. The 26-year-old has struggled on the road this season, going 3-5 with a 5.64 ERA in 13 appearances (nine starts). Blach is 0-1 with a 3.71 ERA in three career starts against the Padres and has allowed a homer to Wil Myers (1-for-7) but has otherwise shut him down.

Wood is 2-1 with a 4.91 ERA in six starts since being acquired from Kansas City. He escaped without a decision against Miami in his last turn after serving up two homers to Giancarlo Stanton while allowing five runs and nine hits in five innings. Wood is 1-3 with a 2.96 ERA in 15 career appearances (six starts) against San Francisco and has been torched by Pablo Sandoval (7-for-9, six RBIs).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Padres have won 17 of their last 25 meetings with the Giants.

2. San Francisco CF Denard Span recorded three hits Tuesday after going 3-for-26 over his previous seven games.

3. Myers is 4-for-35 with one RBI over the last 11 contests.

PREDICTION: Giants 6, Padres 4

Rookie sensation Cody Bellinger is expected to come off the disabled list Wednesday as the Los Angeles Dodgers continue their three-game series against the host Arizona Diamondbacks, who are riding a five-game winning streak. Bellinger missed the past 10 days with a right ankle sprain but is expected to start Wednesday at first base ahead of veteran Adrian Gonzalez.

The Dodgers fell 7-6 in Tuesday’s series opener and have lost three in a row for the first time since June 4-6, but Bellinger’s return should reignite an offense that has muddled through in his absence. Los Angeles is 13-16 this season without Bellinger, who holds a commanding lead in the National League Rookie of the Year race while hitting .274 with 34 homers and 79 RBIs. The Diamondbacks trail first-place Los Angeles by 18 games in the NL West but have a two-game lead over Colorado for the top wild-card spot. A.J. Pollock and Paul Goldschmidt each homered in Tuesday’s win, but shortstop Ketel Marte (left hamstring) was a late scratch and remains listed as day-to-day.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Hyun-Jin Ryu (5-6, 3.34 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (10-5, 3.06)

Ryu improved to 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA since June 17 after tossing six innings of one-run ball against Pittsburgh last Thursday. “This guy is a competitor,” manager Dave Roberts told reporters. “He’s a big game pitcher. He’s trying to earn continued opportunities. You respect that.” The 30-year-old South Korean last faced Arizona on Sept. 6, 2014 and has gone 3-2 with a 3.26 ERA in eight career starts against the Diamondbacks.

Ray pitched well in his first game back from the concussion list last Thursday, allowing one run with nine strikeouts over five innings in a 3-2 win over the New York Mets. “It’s good to have Robbie back. There's that old familiar feeling that he was giving every one of us, just pounding the zone,” manager Torey Lovullo told reporters. “We really loved everything that he did.” Corey Seager is 3-for-21 with 11 strikeouts against Ray, who is 4-3 with a 3.14 ERA in 11 career starts against the Dodgers.

WALK-OFFS

1. Seager was held out of the starting lineup on Tuesday because of a sore right elbow but appeared as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning.

2. Arizona LF David Peralta is 18-for-48 with five doubles and two triples in his last 12 games against the Dodgers.

3. Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw (back) will make his first start since July 23 on Friday in San Diego.

PREDICTION: Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 2

The Los Angeles Angels struggled through the first two stops of their 10-game road trip but look to conclude the trek in impressive fashion as they attempt to complete a three-game sweep when they host the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. Despite the absence of Mike Trout, the Angels have outscored the Athletics 11-3 in winning the first two contests and remain one game behind Minnesota for the second wild-card spot in the American League.

C.J. Cron was the hitting star for Los Angeles in Tuesday's 8-2 triumph, driving in four runs with his eighth career two-homer performance, while Martin Maldonado has gone 4-for-7 with a solo blast and three runs scored over the first two games of the series as the Angels have gone 4-5 on their trek. Trout, who is mired in an 0-for-17 slump, missed both contests with a stiff neck but hopes to be in the lineup on Wednesday. Oakland entered the series having swept a three-game set against Texas but is in danger of suffering the same fate as it has dropped three straight on the road. Matt Joyce has hit safely in seven of his last eight contests after reaching the 20-homer plateau for the first time in his career on Tuesday.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (4-4, 4.24 ERA) vs. Angels RH Parker Bridwell (7-2, 2.89)

Graveman's return from a stay on the disabled list that lasted two-plus months was a rough one, but he has righted the ship as he's allowed only five runs in 20 innings over his last three starts. The 26-year-old native of Alabama tamed Texas on Friday, striking out six without issuing a walk while limiting the Rangers to one run in seven frames despite giving up nine hits. Graveman is 2-2 with a 3.19 ERA and one complete game in nine career starts against the Angels, including three this season.

Bridwell continued to impress on Friday but suffered his first loss in nine starts after giving up two runs and six hits in seven innings against Houston. The 26-year-old rookie from Texas has yielded fewer than three earned runs in four consecutive turns and 10 of his last 12 while issuing more than one walk only once in his last eight outings. Bridwell, who will be facing Oakland for the first time, has posted a 4-0 record and 2.00 ERA on the road but is just 3-2 with a 3.56 ERA at home.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Angels placed RHP Bud Norris (knee) on the 10-day disabled list, transferred RHP Huston Street (shoulder) to the 60-day DL and purchased the contract of OF Eric Young Jr. from Triple-A Salt Lake.

2. Oakland rookie 1B Matt Olson has gone 4-for-8 with two home runs and three RBIs in his last two games.

3. Los Angeles sent 3B Yunel Escobar (oblique) and RHP Garrett Richards (biceps) on rehab assignments to Single-A Inland Empire and Salt Lake, respectively.
