Cleveland played very well in their first game but what do you expect from a Mike Tomlin coached team when they play average to below average squads? Tomlin is a horrendous preparer for terrible teams and a fantastic coach for better NFL teams. This Ravens team faces an angry Harbaugh who is on the hot seat as his team did not go to the playoffs last year or years before and the seat is getting warmer. What does this team do? They dominate the pre-season and then they dominate a division rival in the opening game winning 20-0. If this team can beat a Bengals team and a coach on the hot seat 20-0, imagine what they will do to a young Browns team who has not handled much success and who nearly beat the Steelers so they will be in for a great reality check as the Ravens will not take this team lightly. The Ravens desperatley want to move to 2-0 as these are the games they have to win and need these wins to secure the division. Browns come back down to earth against a fantastic and well coached Ravens defense on a mission this week.

The Panthers defense is healthy right now. And when they are healthy they are one of the most dominating groups in the league. They suffocated the 49ers last week. And I think they will do the same against a Bills offense that is short on playmakers. Tyrod Taylor does what he can. And LeSean McCoy is still one of the best in the business. But the Bills don't have anything at receiver. And they don't have enough guys with high-end talent to crack the Carolina Cover-2. Yes, Buffalo coach Sean McDermott will have a solid game plan against his old team. But he doesn't have the guys to execute it. Carolina is clearly the better team here. And I expect a spirited effort from them in their home opener.

4-Unit Play. Take #269 Arizona (-7) over Indianapolis (1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 17)
The Colts roster is absolutely pathetic. These guys are at least as bad as the Browns were last year, and Cleveland barely won a single game. Scott Tolzien is not even a CFL-caliber quarterback. I can't possibly see him getting the start. And that means that the Colts will be going with Jacoby Brissett, a guy that's been with the team for about 15 minutes. Arizona is definitely a little shell-shocked. They lost David Johnson and Carson Palmers all-too-familiar meltdown cost them yet another game in Detroit last week. But this team is still 10x as talented as the pathetic Colts. I don't expect this one to stay within 17 and I think Arizona is ready to take out some frustrations here.

This game should be a goddamn bloodbath. I honestly think that the Raiders can and will win this game somewhere around 38-10 or 42-13. They are going to threaten to top their total by themselves. The Raiders put up 359 yards and 26 points against the Titans last week and they didn't even play well. Derek Carr missed a bunch of throws. They had to settle for four field goals. They didn't have a single play longer than 25 yards. But I think that this team is going to be a lot sharper this week and they should not have a problem topping 30 points, something they did eight times last season.
Also, this is going to be an emotional game for the Raiders. They announced their move to Las Vegas this offseason. But they still have three years in Oakland and this is the best team the Raiders fans have had in over 15 mostly ugly years. It is going to be a charged atmosphere and the diehards will just want to see the Raiders absolutely thrash someone. Who better than the Jets?
Oh yeah: the Jets. Jesus the Jets are awful. This team won't win more than one game this season. Their roster is an absolute dumpster fire. Honestly and truly: this is one of the worst rosters I have ever seen. Matt Forte is about four years past his prime - and he's the best offensive weapon they have. The offensive line stinks. Their receivers are a bunch of nobodies. New York only managed 38 rushing yards and 214 total yards against a pretty mediocre Bills defense last week. It isn't going to go any better on the road against the Raiders this week.
But what's worse for the Jets is their defense. Sheldon Richardson is gone. Damon Harrison is gone. David Harris is gone. Derelle Revis is gone. They have two rookie safeties going up against Derek Carr. They have four linebackers that wouldn't start for any other team in the NFL. The Jets allowed the Bills - who are very limited offensively - to ring up 408 total yards and 190 rushing yards.
The Jets lost just 21-12 in Week 1. But Buffalo should've had at least 10 more points as well, as Charles Clay dropped a touchdown pass (which was then intercepted) and they missed a field goal. Add in some stunning game management decisions b Todd Bowles - who has no idea what he is doing - and that game was not as close as the final score suggested. And it won't be close this week.
Oakland is going to have a field day. And I simply can't see a scenario in which this game is competitive. The Jets know this season is all about tanking. And they don't have the talent to do anything about it even if they weren't actively trying to lose. New York is travelling across the country to play a second straight road game against a playoff team that is going to be amped up for its home debut. I will be absolutely stunned if the Raiders don't get to 30 points. And I simply don't see any way that the Jets offense is going to be able to keep up. Raiders in a walk.

Tennessee had a tough luck of the draw facing Oakland in their first game and this is a great let down spot for a Jaguars team that will not be facing a quarterback catastrophe like they did in the first week against the Texans. This Jags team will be facing a very strong offensive and defensive line and competent quarterback play with the Titans who do not want to start the season 0-2. This is the Titans team that won some big games last year including blowing out the Packers and they will be ready for the Jaguars in this must win game for this team and the Jags too come back down to earth this week after a big win in the first week. The Titans defensive line should be able to wreak all sorts of havoc on the Jaguars and we like Tennessee in this game as the Jags are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games at home when facing losing teams.

Packers vs Falcons

Maybe the Packers will finish as the best team in the NFC, but right now the Packers defense isn't ready for Atlanta. Green Bay's defense showed improvement in Week 1. That was at home, though, against Seattle, which has one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. Now the Packers go on turf to take on the Falcons playing their first regular-season game in their new $1.5 billion dollar stadium. The last time these two teams got together was in the NFC championship game, also in Atlanta. The final was Atlanta 44, Green Bay 21. The score wasn't even that close. The Falcons bolted to a 31-0 lead and coasted. The Falcons also beat the Packers during the regular season in Atlanta last year. Matt Ryan threw for a combined 680 yards in those two contests versus the Packers, while accounting for eight touchdowns. Ryan has his main weapons back. The Packers' young and inexperienced secondary isn't nearly ready for this kind of early road test. Look for Julio Jones to have a monster game. Defensive guru Dan Quinn has Atlanta's defense on the upswing. Aaron Rodgers isn't going to be able to keep up with Ryan. The Packers' offensive line isn't as good as it was last season. They are going to have a great degree of difficult playing in this setting especially if star right tackle Bryan Bulaga remains out with an ankle injury.

Eagles vs Chiefs

I was impressed with the poise and escapability Carson Wentz showed last week against the Redskins. Wentz was good as a rookie last season. He should be even better this year especially with an upgrade in wide receivers. Tight end Zach Ertz is Wentz's go-to target. Those two could have another big game with safety Eric Berry lost for the season. The over has cashed in 11 of Philadelphia's last 13 road games. The Chiefs aren't going to be the conservative outfit they've been before under Alex Smith. They showed that opening week stunning the Patriots in Foxboro. The Chiefs put up 42 points and 537 yards. Those are the highest figures ever allowed by the Patriots during the 18-year Bill Belichick era. Rookie Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill can make big plays for the Chiefs. That was evident against the Patriots. The Eagles' weakness on defense is their secondary. This weakness has been made worse by Ronald Darby, their top cornerback, suffering an ankle injury that likely will keep him out until late October.

49ers vs Seahawks



Seahawks -13.5 (-110)

The Seahawks have dominated the 49ers at home winning the past six times. They've beaten San Francisco by 19 and 16 points, respectively, the past two years. Seattle has the top defense in the NFL. All of the Seahawks' defensive studs are back and run-stuffer Sheldon Richardson has been added. The 49ers' work-in-progress offense isn't ready for this caliber of defense, especially in the toughest outdoor road venue. San Francisco could only manage three points and 217 yards of offense at home against Carolina this past Sunday. Russell Wilson has the best set of receivers he's ever had. Wilson is primed for a huge year. The 49ers defense took a huge loss when promising rookie linebacker Reuben Foster suffered a high ankle sprain this past Sunday. The Seahawks are in a foul mood after losing to the Packers opening week. They'll take their frustrations out on the hapless 49ers here.

Dolphins vs Chargers

OVER 45.5 (-110)

The Dolphins are much more dangerous offensively with gunslinger Jay Cutler replacing game-manager Ryan Tannehill at quarterback especially with Adam Gase, who coached Cutler to his best season in Chicago, as head coach. Cutler has an elite running back in Jay Ajayi and solid receivers with Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker, Kenny Stills and Julius Thomas. The Dolphins catch a break, too, in that the Chargers will be without their top cornerback, injured Jason Verrett. Ajayi should be in line for a big game, too, as the Chargers' new 3-4 defense was torched for 140 yards on the ground by the Broncos' mediocre rush attack last week. The teams met last season in Southern California and the Dolphins won, 31-24. Philip Rivers didn't have his best wide receiver, Keenan Allen, for that game. Allen is healthy now. Both teams are better offensively now than they were then, but the total is much lower than the 55 points they combined for last year.

Titans vs Jaguars

Titans -125
Tennessee is the superior team with a much better quarterback in a matchup of Marcus Mariota versus Blake Bortles. The line is low because the Titans lost to the Raiders at home while the Jaguars dominated the Texans opening week. The well-coached Titans defensive brain trust, headed by Dick LeBeau, is going to stack the run against the Jaguars knowing Jacksonville's simple game plan is pound it on the ground with Leonard Fournette and have Bortles be a game manager instead of a gunslinger. The Titans have a much more balanced offense with two good runners and underrated receivers. Bortles is a turnover machine and doesn't have his No. 1 wide receiver as Allen Robinson was lost for the season with a knee injury. Only twice in the last three years have the Jaguars managed to string together consecutive victories.

There is great anticipation before each team’s opening game. When that season debut is suddenly denied, even if Mother Nature is responsible, it affects the psyche of the entire club. We may have seen that with the Texans last week in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The Bucs might be an ascending club but all they’ve had in preparation for this campaign are exhibition games with vanilla game-planning, soft hits and makeshift lineups. Taking the field in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and taking down a Chicago team by more than a converted touchdown after the Bears nearly toppled the heavily favoured Falcons, becomes a demanding task. The Bears are establishing a feisty defence and appear to have some emerging stars on offence. Chicago QB Mike Glennon also knows this opponent quite well after being groomed in Tampa’s system. Buccaneers have also been money guzzlers as home chalk with just one cover in past six when favoured here.

With an upgraded roster, perhaps the Jaguars are only a quarterback away from becoming a contender. Trouble is, they are currently stuck with Blake Bortles and that’s a liability. However, by winning handily in Houston there is this false belief that the team can still succeed with its inadequate QB at the helm. Good luck with that. Bortles has thrown 51 interceptions compared to 47 touchdowns in his less than illustrious career. In that 29-7 win last week, his biggest contribution was not turning the ball over after completing just 11 of 21 passes for a measly 125 yards. As if the passing game needed further woes, Jacksonville’s best and leading receiver from a year ago was lost for the season when Allen Robinson tore his ACL in last week’s victory. The Titans are a more complete team. Losing to Oakland last week is nothing to be ashamed of. Look for big bounce back from the more potent squad.

We should thank the Bengals for this bloated line. By shutting out Cincinnati on its own field, the Ravens are being afforded tremendous respect here. Unfortunately, the Bengals aren’t much of a team this year. It would not surprise us to see these Browns surpass them in the AFC North standings this season after Cleveland’s lengthy occupation of the basement. The Browns have some solid pieces in place, namely on the offensive line. Cleveland’s revolving door at quarterback has another rookie as its pivot but DeShone Kizer was game against a respected Pittsburgh defence last week and he won’t back down here.
