OK, I'm sold now that Cam Newton is the MVP Cam Newton of two years ago. He's thrown for 651 yards and accounted for seven touchdowns during the last two weeks. Carolina is averaging 30 points during this span. The Eagles' secondary is well below average and their pass rush is down without injured Fletcher Cox. He's missed the last two games and isn't likely to return to the lineup on a short week. Carolina has held five of its last seven opponents to 20 points or less at home. The Eagles are short on running backs with Wendall Smallwood injured and Darren Sproles out for the season. The Eagles also will be without right tackle Lane Johnson, one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL. He suffered a concussion this past Sunday. Philadelphia has failed to cover in seven of its last 10 away contests. It's a big disadvantage for the road team playing on Thursday because of the short week. In the Eagles' case, this is made worse by facing a non-division foe.

Note this is a 1st 5 inning Wager: There is no one pitching better than Kyle Hendricks is right now. Hendricks has allowed just 2 runs in his last 25 2/3 innings of work. Gio Gonzalez on the other hand hasn’t been sharp as in his last 3 starts has an ERA of 7.54 and a WHIP of 1.74. With the added pressure of a Game 5 and the current form of Gio I have to back the Cubs starter Hendricks. I don’t want to go full game but rather make this a 5 inning play. I believe the Cubs will have the early lead here but because it’s an elimination game Dusty Baker will have a short leash on Gonzalez and if he gets in trouble he’ll pull him early. Leaving Washington a chance to claw their way back into game. So I believe we have a bigger edge thru the 1st 5 innings.

Philadelphia Eagles at Carolina Panthers

The defensive liabilities of the current Eagles is overshadowed by their 4-1 record and the sophomore performance of Carson Wentz. But to place this game, and play, into a shoebox it is noteworthy that three of the Eagles wins this season came against the Giants, Chargers and Cardinals this season, a group that has in total won only three games and one of those was when the Bolts defeated the Giants, this past weekend. The team's other victory was a Week #1 fortunate win over a thin Washington defense.

The Eagles beatable secondary currently ranks 29th in the league, versus the three teams I just mentioned above, and of course their only loss of the season, versus the Chiefs.

Cam Newton and his offense have found their groove, mostly due to the Panthers quarterback finally having some playing time under his belt after not receiving practice time in the preseason due to a shoulder injury. Newton has thrown six touchdown passes the past two weeks -- on the road mind you - in wins at Gillette and Ford Field.

Don't think for a minute that Wentz and the Eagles coaching staff don't have a plan to limit the 100-year old Julius Peppers and his 5-plus sacks.

A game that is offensive easily soars over the total tonight in Carolina.

Note that there is a chance of light rains without wind tonight for this game giving both sidelines and their receivers an offensive edge.
