Jockey Hector Diaz Jr. has been in her irons on four previous occasions, hitting the board in each, winning once, and is back today here in Ozone Park for his 5th ride. The stablemate, #1 THREE EIGHTY EIGHT has hit the board in four of her last four outings, with three of those "board hit efforts" also qualifying as "POWER RUNS."

# 7 SELFIE SENSATION 7/2

# 12 CANDY ASSAY 9/2

# 1 MISCHIEVOUS BELLE 2/1

I think SELFIE SENSATION is a decent choice. Shows formidable speed figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group. Loza has one of the most respectable winning percentages in this field with entries running at this distance and surface. Could best this group of animals based on the speed figure - 61 - of her last race. CANDY ASSAY - Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a very good handicapping key. This one ranks at the top in this field. Must be considered given the class of races run recently. MISCHIEVOUS BELLE - Will most likely come out solid - I have liked the way this filly has moved quickly to the lead recently.

#4 GASPROM (ML=4/1)
#12 A BIT OF WHO DO (ML=7/2)
#7 MO TRAMP (ML=5/2)

GASPROM - Faced tougher last race out at Delaware Park. Based on class figures, this is a weaker field, so I will put this one on my list of probable winners in this race. Have to give this colt a chance. Ran a nice contest in the last race within the last thirty days. A BIT OF WHO DO - Have to make this gelding a strong challenger; he comes off a nice outing on Oct 14th. Quinones and Sullivan have had fabulous success together over the last year. The last speed rating of 70 is the highest last race speed figure in the bunch. MO TRAMP - I like to play this handicapping angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a nice outing within the last 30 days.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 NUCLEAR FUSION (ML=8/1),

NUCLEAR FUSION - You always think this equine has a shot to be victorious, but he falters frequently.

#2 CHRISTMAS EVE (ML=8/1)
#9 JAZZ HALL (ML=10/1)
#3 PLEIADES K S A (ML=5/2)
#6 MENSCHKE (ML=15/1)
#8 WEEKEND SERENADE (ML=12/1)

CHRISTMAS EVE - First-timer has morning drills over the Penn National strip, which is always a plus. Strong return on investment for this jockey and conditioner twosome. This trainer has an ROI of +61 with horses first time out. JAZZ HALL - Utilizing this jockey/conditioner combination is a good choice. This here is a 2YO race. This horse's sire has strong stats (32 pct win rate). PLEIADES K S A - A horse coming back this soon after a nice effort is a good signal. Horses that finish 2nd in Maiden races and finish well clear of the show horse are generally good bets next time out. This filly's last speed figure earned on October 26th is in the top spot in last race speed figures. This animal brings in a lot of dough per race. Utmost in this affair. MENSCHKE - This jockey/conditioner duo has been producing a very beneficial ROI, right at +280. I like the fact that this first timer's recent works have been over this track. This filly is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Stites. WEEKEND SERENADE - Really think this horse is going to be close at the finish.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 BETTERBRINGURAGAME (ML=3/1), #1 MS TEEK (ML=9/2), #10 THE BAY EXPRESS (ML=6/1),

BETTERBRINGURAGAME - Didn't look so hot last time out. Probably won't make an impact in today's race. In any contest of 6 furlongs, I like to support a contender that has been sharp in sprint events recently. Speed kills. Plenty of zip in this event compromises this animal's hopes. MS TEEK - Pace makes the race. Hard for this early speedster to be able to deal with the early pressure from the rest of this bunch. Garnered a pedestrian rating last race out in a Maiden Special race on October 26th. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that fig. THE BAY EXPRESS - Hard to put your money on this early speedball. Too much zip in the race. Not likely that the speed figure she registered on October 19th will be enough in this race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #2 CHRISTMAS EVE on the win end if we get at least 5/1 odds

# 3 MARCAVELLYS DREAM 7/2

HOCKEY HALL looks competitive to best this field especially at a long price. Looks very strong to be up on the lead at the first call. Has performed solidly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 72 avg speed rating. ONE FLASHY CAT - Could best this group here, showing formidable figures of late. Has performed strongly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 71 avg Equibase Speed Fig. MARCAVELLYS DREAM - Posted a very good Equibase Speed Fig last time out.

NBA (505) LOS ANGELES LAKERS VS (506) BOSTON CELTICS

Take: OVER

Reason: Your free play for Wednesday, November 8, 2017 is in the NBA contest between the LA Lakers and Boston Celtics. Boston opened its season with two losses. Since then, it's been nine straight wins. A big reason is the offseason addition of Kyrie Irving, who leads the team in scoring. AL Horford has also been a component of the Celits fine start. Boston has had one of the best defenses in the NBA, allowing just 94.5 ppg against. Contrast to the 5-5 Lakers, who are allowing a whopping 107.3 ppg this season. The Lakers have won two straight games with victories over Memphis and Brooklyn at home. Boston has covered eight of their last nine games. In fact, they have scored double digits over the line in four of their last five and seven of their last nine. LA has gone over in 11 of its 16 road games. Boston is 16-5-1 in its last 22 home games. Boston should score easily here against this bad LA defense. I look for this game to go OVER the total.

Heat-5

The Miami Heat are having some issues and what better place to work them out than in Phoenix against the Suns, who have had more than their fair share of issues of their own. While the Suns are breathing easier after dealing away disgruntled star Eric Bledsoe, the Heat are trying to work things out with center Hassan Whiteside, who was benched a few days ago for loafing. Nice. But in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king – and Miami has more talent right now than the young and confused Suns. Don’t expect a game to remember, but the Heat should have enough for the road cover.

My 1* Free Play is the LA Lakers (8:05 EST).

The 5-5 LA Lakers are in Boston to take on the 9-2 Celtics and while I’m not calling for an outright victory, I do definitely expect the young but hungry visiting side to keep this one competitive down the stretch.
LA comes in with momentum and confidence as well after back-to-back victories, most recently a convincing 107-102 win at home on Sunday over the Grizzlies. Brook Lopez led the charge in that one with 21 points.
So far LA averages 106.5 PPG and concedes 107.3
The C’s opened the year with two straight losses, but have since won nine straight. Boston averages 103.5 PPG and concedes 94.5.
Kyrie Irving had 35 points and seven assists in the Celtics latest victory.
I’ll point out though that LA is 12-7 ATS in its last 19 when playing on two days rest (including 2-0 this season,) while Boston is interestingly just 8-12 ATS in its last 20 against the Pacific division.
A lot of new faces for both sides, but the Lakers young core is coming together with veteran big man Lopez leading the way.
I think we’re going to witness an all out war to the end in this one and will therefore recommend grabbing as many points as you can.
Good luck…Larry

The Chippewas are back home buoyed by a 21-0 fourth quarter last week in their comeback underdog win at Western Michigan. Now Central Michigan is back home for a date with Eastern Michigan, and the Chipps are once again installed as the small home pup.

Eastern Michigan did rout Ball State in their last game, but the Eagles are just 3-6 on the season, so laying points on the road with Eastern is not something I am enamored with. True, Eastern Michigan has covered 11 in a row on the road, but all 5 covers this year were as the underdog, and each of the last 10 covers on the road are as the dog too!

Central Michigan has played their last pair (both wins), and 4 of their last 5 away from home, so look for the "home cooking" tonight to treat the Chippewas the right way. Series numbers show Eastern Michigan stopping a 4-game series losing streak with the home 26-21 win last season, but I am calling for the Central straight up domination to increase to 5-1 the last 6 series meetings.

Take any points available with the home team tonight.

4* CENTRAL MICHIGAN

Magic host the surprisingly successful N.Y. Knicks, who head into this game on no rest after defeating the Hornets at MSG last night.

The Knicks look GREAT, at home! They are 4-2 in the Garden but only 1-2 on the road..

The Knicks have to prove they can win on the road before they get my respect let alone my money.

Orlando is coming off of a couple of days rest, so they should be ready.

The Knicks on the other hand should be tired, especially Porzingas who has been a one man show.

Bet the Magic.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are playing really good basketball right now. They're 7-3 on the year and arrive in Oakland riding a five-game win streak.

Thing is, those wins have come against a struggling Oklahoma City team, the Heat, the Pelicans, Dallas and Charlotte.

None of those five are the Golden State Warriors.

I love the defending NBA champs as my free winner tonight, as they're about to give the T'Wolves a quick wake-up call.

The Warriors have knocked off Minnesota in 17 of the past 20 meetings, including twice by way of demolition in Oakland last season.

I'm banking on the chemistry I'm seeing from Golden State's fearsome foursome: Stephen Curry (25.7), Kevin Durant (24.8) and Klay Thompson (20.3) and Draymond Green (10.5).

Lay the chalk tonight, as Golden State wins by a dozen.

My free winner is icy, with the Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs going Over the posted number.

The Leafs are in the midst of a three-game home stand, and have had a night to rest since being challenged by the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. Toronto, which has gone over in three straight games, is the No. 1 team in goals-for in the league, with 60 over its first 16 games played.

I know Minnesota is far behind with 40 goals scored in its first 13 games, and averages just 3.08 per game, but the Wild have poked in six twice in their last six games. They've also gone over in two of their last three.

The Wild are also 5-0-1 Over on the road this season, while the Leafs are 6-1-1 Over at home.

Play this one Over tonight, as they should get to 7 or 8 no problem.

4* OVER Wild/Maple Leafs

Now about this complimentary winner

Going to side with the New York Rangers as my free play for Wednesday, as I think they get the best of the visiting Boston Bruins in this one.

For as bad as things were to start the season, for the Rangers, things are looking up suddenly. They're in second-to-last place in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference, but they've won four ina row, and are 6-2-2 in their last 10.

Boston, which is 1-2-1 on the road this season, just beat Minnesota 5-3 at home on Monday, but it has lost three of its last five due to a stagnant offense that averaged two goals per game before the win over the Wild.

Now, with two tough games on the docket: tonight and Friday at Toronto, I don't know if the Bruins are going to survive to win just one.

Look for the Rangers to thrive on Boston's mistakes, as they're 6-for-13 with the power play over the past four games, and catch a Bruins team that has lost eight straight after a win, dating back to last season.

New York, which has won 19 of 26 in this series at home, has won five in a row against Boston.

Preview: Pacers at PistonsGracenote
Nov 8, 2017

The Detroit Pistons are off to their best start this decade and look to keep it going when they host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday. Detroit's 7-3 start marks its best season-opening 10-game stretch since posting the same record in 2008-09.

Indiana routinely has handled the Pistons lately, winning the last six meetings - including all four last season. The Pacers are limping into Detroit with a three-game losing streak after suffering a 117-112 home loss against New Orleans on Tuesday to drop one game below .500. "We have to do a better job when teams make adjustments," Indiana shooting guard Victor Oladipo told reporters after the setback. "We kind of withered away in the second half. And as a leader, I have to make sure we're ready to play in both halves, so this one's on me." Forward Tobias Harris has helped fuel Detroit's strong start with a team-best 19.1 points and is shooting 45.9 percent from 3-point range, well above last year's mark of 34.7.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Indiana, FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE PACERS (5-6): Indiana had no answers on how to slow New Orleans big men Anthony Davis (37 points) and DeMarcus Cousins (32), but its offensive fade was just as troublesome. The Pacers blistered the Pelicans for 75 first-half points while building a 14-point lead and then scored just 37 in the second half during a collapse that frustrated coach Nate McMillan. "We needed to be the aggressors in the second half and we came out flat," McMillan told reporters. "Our guards have to establish the tempo, and that's fair to say both ways. When teams are making a run, I only have so many timeouts. This is where we are. We have to grow, and this can't continue."

ABOUT THE PISTONS (7-3): Standout center Andre Drummond has recorded seven double-doubles and collected at least 12 rebounds in each game while averaging 14 points and 14.7 boards. The 24-year-old also has improved his free-throw shooting (75 percent compared to 38.6 last season) and passing (2.7 assists to 1.1), and the transformation pleases tough-to-impress coach Stan Van Gundy. "I just want his mentality to stay even keel," Van Gundy told reporters while discussing the fact Drummond recorded 16 points, 19 rebounds, four assists and three steals in Saturday's 108-99 victory over Sacramento. "I saw a big step forward in terms of his maturity the other night, and if he stays with that and he's playing a lot harder on a more consistent basis, I thought that was really, really good."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Indiana's four victories over the Pistons last season were by an average of 14.5 points.

2. Pacers PF Domantas Sabonis (calf) sat out Tuesday and is unlikely to play against the Pistons.

3. Detroit SF Stanley Johnson (hip) is questionable to play Wednesday, while PF Jon Leuer (ankle) could miss his third straight game.

Preview: Knicks at MagicGracenote
Nov 8, 2017

Kristaps Porzingis is flourishing as New York's leading scoring option and looks to help the Knicks to their fourth consecutive victory when they visit the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. The 22-year-old Porzingis has scored 300 points so far and passed New York legend Bernard King (298) for the top season-opening 10-game stretch in franchise history.

Porzingis has been so superb that his 28-point effort in Tuesday's 118-113 victory over Charlotte was his third-lowest output of the season. He became the focal point of the attack after Carmelo Anthony was traded to Oklahoma City but said he is much more concerned with halting the franchise's four-season playoff drought than scoring tons of points and receiving accolades. "The sweetest thing for us, the best thing for us, would be to make the playoffs. This means nothing," Porzingis told reporters afterward. "If we can keep winning and I'll keep doing what I have to do, then the real reward will come." Orlando got off to a strong 6-2 start but averaged just 85.5 points while falling to Chicago and Boston in the first two contests of its three-game homestand.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG (New York), FSN Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (6-4): Backup small forward Doug McDermott, who came over in the deal for Anthony, produced his best performance of the season in the win over Charlotte by scoring 20 points. McDermott made 7-of-8 shots - including each of his 3-point attempts - while reaching double digits for the fourth time this season. "Doug's a beast," forward Lance Thomas told reporters after watching the former college player of the year at Creighton take over with 10 fourth-quarter points. "He was doing this in practice. We know what he's capable of doing, and he's doing it."

ABOUT THE MAGIC (6-4): Orlando may elect to hold out point guard Elfrid Payton (hamstring) for the ninth straight game while backup D.J. Augustin (hamstring) definitely will sit out his third consecutive contest. The absences have left journeyman Shelvin Mack as the lone point guard on the roster, and the Magic opted to start Jonathon Simmons during Sunday's 104-88 loss to the Celtics. "Everyone can say we're out of rhythm because we don't have our two point guards in there, but (Simmons) is doing a good job," coach Frank Vogel told reporters. "We were out of rhythm because Boston is a great defensive team. He does a great job there, Shelvin Mack does a great job there and I don't think that's an excuse for our guys."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Knicks have won four of the last five meetings.

2. Orlando SF Evan Fournier recorded just six points on 2-of-14 shooting against Boston after scoring 20 or more in eight of his first nine games.

3. New York C Enes Kanter, also acquired from Oklahoma City, has made 70 percent of his shots on four occasions after going 7-of-8 (87.5 percent) against the Hornets.

Preview: Lakers at CelticsGracenote
Nov 7, 2017

The Boston Celtics are the hottest team in the NBA and will try to push their winning streak to double digits when they host the rival Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. The Celtics dropped their first two games after watching swingman Gordon Hayward go down with a gruesome injury but put the pieces back together and ripped off wins in the next nine contests.

"The only thing that really matters is us handling our preparation, understanding the trust that we continue to build from one another, and the expectations we have within this locker room are reality based," Boston point guard Kyrie Irving told reporters after Monday's 110-107 win at Atlanta. "We know what we want to accomplish but it starts with not taking any moment for granted and understanding we gotta continue to get better." Monday's win snapped a string of eight straight games holding opponents under 100 points for the Celtics, who lead the NBA in scoring defense (94.5). The Lakers are not quite as sharp on the defensive end, surrendering an average of 107.3 points, but did enough on the other end of the floor to win three of their last four games. Rookie point guard Lonzo Ball is the one initiating that offense but is not having much success scoring and is shooting 29.9 percent from the floor on the season, including 6-of-30 over the last three games.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE LAKERS (5-5): Ball is averaging 6.9 assists and 6.4 rebounds in 33 minutes and handed out nine assists in Sunday's 107-102 win over Memphis, but he went 1-of-8 from 3-point range in that game. “He’s been a little down on himself a little bit with the season he’s having,” fellow rookie Kyle Kuzma told the LA Daily News of Ball. "Of course he wants to play a lot better. I just try to tell him to be more aggressive on the floor. ... Once he’s confident in his game he’s pretty hard to guard." Kuzma is taking over the rookie scoring load for the Lakers and is up to an average of 15.4 points on the season after putting up a combined 72 points on 29-of-45 shooting in the last four games.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (9-2): Boston could have drafted Ball with the No. 1 overall pick but instead traded down to the No. 3 spot and picked up forward Jayson Tatum, who is averaging 14.3 points on 50 percent shooting, including 52.9 percent from 3-point range. Tatum recorded 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting and added eight rebounds in Monday's win while frontcourt mate Al Horford finished an assist shy of a triple-double. Horford had to settle for his fourth double-double of the campaign and is averaging 14.6 points and 9.2 rebounds while shooting 47.4 percent from beyond the arc.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Celtics PF Marcus Morris (knee soreness) sat out Monday but is expected to return on Wednesday.

2. Los Angeles C Brook Lopez is averaging 27.3 points over the last three games.

3. Boston took both meetings last season and three straight in the series.

Preview: Heat at SunsGracenote
Nov 7, 2017

The Phoenix Suns went through a stretch of four wins in five games after making a coaching change but have since dropped three in a row. The Suns reportedly engineered another major shakeup on Tuesday and will find out if that's the key to breaking out of the current rut at the expense of the struggling Miami Heat, who visit on Wednesday.

Phoenix, which returned home from a five-game road trip on Monday and could not find the energy to do battle with the Brooklyn Nets in a 98-92 loss that marked the lowest-scoring game of the brief Jay Triano era as coach, finally dealt disgruntled point guard Eric Bledsoe away on Tuesday morning. Bledsoe, who has not played since Oct. 21 after being sent away by the team, is reportedly being sent to the Milwaukee Bucks for a package that includes veteran center Greg Monroe and a first-round pick. The Suns once traded away Goran Dragic to open up more playing time for Bledsoe, and Dragic returns to the desert on Wednesday leading a Heat squad that scored a season low in a 97-80 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Monday to fall to 1-2 on the six-game road trip. Dragic scored 19 points in the setback and is averaging 19.3 points and 4.8 assists.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Miami), FS Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE HEAT (4-6): Miami coach Erik Spoelstra benched Hassan Whiteside in the second half of Monday's loss after the center lost his focus on a play. "I guess he thought it was better if I didn't come back in," Whiteside told reporters. "Coach playing me 16 minutes, I guess that's what he wanted me to play. ... Last game, I played 31 minutes. I thought I played great (Sunday at the Clippers). Today, I played 16 minutes. So, I really don't know what I'm going to play (Wednesday) in Phoenix." Whiteside was just 1-of-9 from the floor when he was benched and finished with three points and six rebounds, well off his season averages of 15.2 points and 12.4 boards.

ABOUT THE SUNS (4-7): Phoenix shooting guard Devin Booker, 21, became the fourth-youngest player in NBA history (LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony) to reach 3,000 points when he scored 18 against the Nets on Monday. "My dream my whole life was to play in the NBA," Booker told reporters. "Once I got here I realized I wanted to leave a mark, so every time I got out there I try to think back to those days when I was a little kid and wanted to be successful in this league. I'm trying to do it and get wins along with it." Booker is averaging 21.6 points on the season and is 29-of-29 from the free-throw line in the last five games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Suns SG Troy Daniels went 1-of-4 from 3-point range on Monday after going 9-of-13 in the previous three games.

2. Heat SG Dion Waiters left the team Monday to attend the birth of his daughter and could sit out Wednesday as well.

3. Miami took 13 of the last 14 in the series, with the lone loss coming at Phoenix last season.

Preview: Timberwolves at WarriorsGracenote
Nov 7, 2017

The Golden State Warriors wow fans with their offensive exploits, but they also do strong work on the other end of the floor. The Warriors, who led the NBA in defensive field-goal percentage en route to the championship last season, will try to follow up their best defensive performance of the 2017-18 campaign with another strong effort when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday.

Golden State did not get off to the best start on the defensive end this season but is coming on of late and put everything together while holding the Miami heat to 36.1 percent shooting in a 97-80 victory on Monday. "I thought it was our best defensive effort of the year," Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters. "It was tremendous. We forced 23 turnovers, we were attentive on our switching. ... I thought we made really good decisions out there." The Timberwolves should pose a challenge to that defense after averaging 114.4 points during a five-game winning streak. Minnesota boasts five scorers averaging double figures, led by Karl-Anthony Towns' 21.8 points, and is enjoying the franchise's first five-game winning streak since 2009.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS North (Minnesota), NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (7-3): Minnesota brought in veterans Jimmy Butler and Jeff Teague over the summer to supplement a solid young corps, and they believe the team is only scratching the surface. "This is still a work in progress," Teague told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "We're still trying to figure out each other. It can be a lot better. We all know that. We're starting to get into a groove here. But we have miles to go to be the team we want to be." Teague recorded 18 points and 12 assists in a 112-94 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday to continue his own groove with a fourth double-double in five games.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (8-3): Golden State leads the NBA in scoring average (118.5 points) and assists (30.5) but suffered through a rare off shooting night while connecting at 36.8 percent in Monday's win. That slump did not extend to forward Draymond Green, who scored 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting and is 23-of-34 from the floor during a four-game winning streak. The reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year averaged 7.1 points on 36.4 percent shooting in the first seven games but scored at least 15 points in each of the last four contests.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Warriors SF Kevin Durant recorded three blocks on Monday -- his eighth game this season with multiple blocked shots.

2. Timberwolves C Gorgui Dieng recorded his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds in 19 minutes on Sunday.

3. Golden State took three of the four meetings last season, with the lone loss coming at Minnesota on March 10.

NBA Betting Roadmap: Hayward who?
Al McMordie

Through the NBA season's first three weeks, there are several surprises. Out East, Stan Van Gundy's Detroit Pistons and Frank Vogel's Orlando Magic are in second and third place, respectively, while Cleveland is 4-6 and tied for 11th place with the Nets and Heat. While in the West, the big surprise is the Memphis Grizzlies sitting in a tie for 4th place, with a 6-4 record. Let's look at the week ahead in the NBA.

Spread Watch

Who needs Gordon Hayward? That might be the thought of Boston fans, as the Celtics have won nine straight games after starting the season 0-2. They had also covered eight straight, before losing against the spread on Monday night in Atlanta.

For the season, the Celtics are second (behind the Warriors) in point differential (+9.1) and second (behind the 76ers) in ATS win percentage (.818).

This week, Boston will host the Lakers, Hornets and Raptors, so it will have an excellent opportunity to stretch its win streak to 12. But the fact the Celtics lost ATS to Atlanta in their last game is, for me, a huge "sell" signal.

Indeed, NBA teams that finally lose ATS, after covering their previous seven (or more) games in a row, typically follow up that initial ATS defeat with a second straight ATS defeat and especially if they're playing at home (41-76-3 ATS since 1990). Grab the points with the Lakers on Tuesday.

Total Watch

After Week 2 in the NBA saw a preponderance of Unders it was a different story last week, as games went Over the total to a tune of 31-22-1. No team contributed more to this trend than Mike D'Antoni's Houston Rockets, who sailed Over the total in all four of their games.

Their last game, on Sunday, was also their most impressive (and highest scoring) win of the season, as they blew out Utah, 137-110, as a 6.5-point favorite. Will the Rockets' high-octane offense continue to light up the scoreboard this week?

Houston will be well-rested when it plays its next game, on Thursday, vs. LeBron James' Cavaliers (before finishing the week with back-to-back games vs. Memphis and Indiana). That Saturday game versus Memphis has all the earmarks of a low-scoring game.

Indeed, the Grizzlies and Rockets have played twice already this season. And not only did Memphis win both games, but it also held the Rockets to their two lowest regular-season point totals (89 and 90) in D'Antoni's 93 games as head coach. Not surprisingly, both of those games went Under the total (by 11 and 25.5 points). Look for Saturday's game to be relatively low-scoring, as well.

Injury Watch

The Los Angeles Clippers got their season off to a promising 4-0 SU/ATS start and were the league's final, remaining undefeated team. But the injury bug bit the Clippers, as point guard Milos Teodosic injured his ankle and is out indefinitely, while forward Danilo Gallinari bruised his hip and exited Los Angeles' last game, a loss to the Miami Heat.

The Clippers are now just 5-4 SU/ATS and both players will miss Tuesday's game at San Antonio (another injury-riddled club). After playing the Spurs, the Clippers will continue their road trip with games at Oklahoma City and New Orleans.

Saturday's game at the Pelicans could be particularly troublesome for the Clippers if they remain short-handed, since they'll be playing without rest. New Orleans is also 25-12 ATS its last 37 games versus Los Angeles, including 14-4 ATS at home. Take the Pelicans.

Schedule Watch

Last season, the NBA made a concerted effort to reduce the number of times a team had to play back-to-back games, or several games within a relatively short time-frame. But there are still occasions when a team must play three games in four nights, or five games in seven nights.

Dating back to last season, NBA teams that were saddled with playing five games in seven nights have lost that 5th game (straight-up) 10 times in a row (4-6 ATS).

This Saturday, the Phoenix Suns will be in that unenviable scheduling situation when they host the Timberwolves. To make matters worse, Phoenix will be coming off a Friday night game versus Orlando, while Minnesota will have had the previous two days off.

Since 1990, NBA teams are a wallet-busting 74-107 ATS at home when playing their fifth game in seven days against an opponent which didn't play the previous two days. Take the Timberwolves.

Wednesday's NBA GOTD betting preview and odds: Timberwolves at Warriors

Minnesota Timberwolves at Golden State Warriors (-10.5, 229.5)

LINE HISTORY: The Warriors opened as 10-point home favorites and that spread has been bet up slightly to -10.5. The total hit betting boards at 228 and has been bumped to 229.5.

INJURY REPORT:

Timberwolves - C J. Patton (Out Indefinitely, Toe).

Warriors - No injuries to report.

POWER RANKINGS: Timberwolves (-7.8) - Warriors (-18) + home court (-3) = Warriors -13.2

CHAMPIONSHIP FUTURES:

T-Wolves +4,000
Warriors -200

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (7-3 SU, 5-4-1 ATS, 6-3-1 O/U): Minnesota brought in veterans Jimmy Butler and Jeff Teague over the summer to supplement a solid young corps, and they believe the team is only scratching the surface.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (8-3 SU, 5-6 ATS, 7-4 O/U): Golden State leads the NBA in scoring average (118.5 points) and assists (30.5) but suffered through a rare off shooting night while connecting at 36.8 percent in Monday's win.

TRENDS:

* Timberwolves are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
* Warriors are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Over is 5-1 in Timberwolves last 6 road games.
* Over is 10-2 in Warriors last 12 vs. Western Conference.
* Timberwolves are 5-0-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings.

CONSENSUS: 62 percent of the spread wagers are on the road underdog Wolves while 72 percent of the totals selections are on the Over.

Preview: Wild at Maple LeafsGracenote
Nov 8, 2017

The Toronto Maple Leafs began their three-game homestand with a win and look to follow suit on Wednesday as they host the Minnesota Wild. Toronto received a scare from Vegas on Monday, when it watched a 3-1 lead disappear before emerging victorious in a shootout.

Nazem Kadri registered his second two-goal performance in six contests, ending his four-game drought in the process, as the Maple Leafs posted just their second triumph in seven games. The Wild continue a four-game road trip after opening it with a 5-3 loss at Boston on Monday. Defenseman Jared Spurgeon notched an assist in the setback, which was Minnesota's third in four overall contests, to become the first player on the team to reach double digits in points. The Wild are hoping Monday's effort gets Eric Staal going offensively, as the veteran center scored his second goal in nine contests following a three-game streak.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN North Plus (Minnesota), Sportsnet, TVA (Toronto)

ABOUT THE WILD (5-6-2): Staal is not the only member of the club struggling to tally, as he became just the second to hit the five-goal mark. Mikael Granlund finally got on the board Monday, scoring his first of the season after registering a career-high 26 in 2016-17. Chris Stewart leads Minnesota with six goals but is mired in a seven-game drought.

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (9-7-0): Mitch Marner has become somewhat of a shootout expert after less than 1 1/4 seasons in the NHL. The 20-year-old, who scored the decisive goal in the bonus format against the Golden Knights, has converted four of his nine career opportunities. Toronto already has matched its total of shootout wins from last season (1-8) after playing its first such contest in 2017-18.

OVERTIME

1. Wild RW Nino Niederreiter has recorded a point in three of his four games since returning from an ankle injury.

2. The Maple Leafs recalled C Frederik Gauthier from the Toronto Marlies and assigned RW Kasperi Kapanen to the American Hockey League club.

3. Minnesota G Devan Dubnyk, who was pulled after allowing four goals on 24 shots in two periods on Monday, is expected to start against Toronto.

Preview: Bruins at RangersGracenote
Nov 7, 2017

The New York Rangers have battled back to the .500 mark after a discouraging start to the season and look to extend their winning streak to five while continuing to dominate the visiting Boston Bruins on Wednesday night. The Rangers own points in eight of their last 10 games (6-2-2) after rallying for a 5-3 victory over Columbus on Monday and have beaten the Bruins five straight times, allowing only eight goals in the process.

“Even when we were losing, we were in games - right there to go after the win - and we didn’t have the confidence to do that,” New York defenseman Marc Staal told the New York Post. “I think this last stretch, we’ve found ways to make plays to win them. That’s the biggest difference.” The Rangers have also perked up on offense with 27 goals in six games and an improved power play as they prepare to take on the Bruins, who have points in seven of eight (4-1-3) despite missing several key players with injuries and illness. Boston knocked off Minnesota 5-3 on Monday without All-Star Brad Marchand (upper-body), who is not expected to play Wednesday. “You’re starting to see the personality of our hockey club that we’re not gonna be an easy out,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters. “We are going to work hard.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network

ABOUT THE BRUINS (6-4-3): Marchand, who shares the team lead at 14 points with David Pastrnak, did not travel to New York but could potentially meet the team for the game in Toronto on Friday. Anders Bjork joined Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron on the top line against Minnesota while center David Krejci (six points, six games) was placed on injured reserve after missing seven games with a back injury. Captain Zdeno Chara had two assists Monday and fellow defenseman Torey Krug has raised his game of late with six points in the last four games to push his total to eight on the season.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (7-7-2): One of the big reasons for the turnaround has been special teams as New York is 8-for-8 on the kill in the last four games and converted 7-of-19 power play opportunities in the past five outings. “It makes a big difference when you have success on the power play,” Staal told reporters. “When you win the special teams game, you are going to come out on top a lot of the time.” Mika Zibanejad had three assists Monday and leads the team with 17 points while defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk boasts three goals and five assists during a five-game point streak.

OVERTIME

1. Boston G Tuukka Rask, who owns a .923 save percentage in 20 career games against the Rangers, is 0-2-1 on the road in 2017-18.

2. New York RW Michael Grabner owns six goals in his last six games after scoring only once in the first 10.

3. The Bruins have killed off all 13 power-play opportunities over the last five contests.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have cooled off slightly after a strong start and face a serious challenge this week when they begin a three-game west coast trip against the surging San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night. The Lightning, who also play Los Angeles and Anaheim on the trip, have dropped two of their last four games and avoided a third defeat during that stretch by outlasting Columbus 5-4 in a shootout Saturday.

“When we’ve had a little bit of a stinker, we’ve responded,” Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper told reporters. “You’ve got to like that about your group. The big thing is, you just can’t have the stinkers every second night. But I’ve really liked the way the guys have responded when we’ve had a subpar performance.” A big reason for that positive response is the play of goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, who owns at least a point in 11 straight games, and the 23-year-old Russian will likely take on another red-hot netminder in Martin Jones on Wednesday. Jones (7-3-0, 1.98 goals-against average) has allowed no more than two goals in eight straight games and was named the NHL’s third star of the week on Monday. The Sharks have won four straight contests and permitted only nine goals in their last six outings after edging Anaheim 2-1 in a shootout Saturday.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (11-2-2): Captain Steven Stamkos tops the league with 25 points and linemate Nikita Kucherov leads the NHL with 14 goals while seven players have registered double-figure points in the early going. Brayden Point (seven goals, 16 points) centers the second line that has been a force on both sides of the ice with Yanni Gourde, who has scored in three straight games, and Ondrej Palat (four goals, nine points). Norris Trophy finalist Victor Hedman managed one goal in the first 15 games after scoring a career-high 16 in 2016-17, but has 10 assists - five in the last three contests.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (8-5-0): San Jose could get top-four defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic (concussion) back after a one-game absence and veteran blueliner Paul Martin (ankle) is closing in on his season debut. “They did a good job,” Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said of his defense Saturday. “It’s not easy taking (Vlasic) out. You see his importance. We bent but didn’t break.” Center Logan Couture leads the offense with eight goals (three on the power play) and 12 points while captain Joe Pavelski is tied for second on the team with four tallies and needs one to reach 300 in his career.

OVERTIME

1. Sharks F Kevin Labanc, who has seven points but only one in the last six games, was reassigned to the American Hockey League’s San Jose Barracuda.

2. Tampa Bay F Chris Kunitz is scheduled to play his 900th game Wednesday.

3. San Jose won the last three meetings, including a 2-1 triumph in San Jose last season, and six of the past eight.

PREDICTION: Sharks 4, Lightning 3
