Preview: Pistons at PacersGracenote
Nov 16, 2017

Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy knew that a portion of the schedule filled with road games would provide a real test for his fast-starting squad. The Pistons failed the first section of that test and will try to rebound when they continue a three-game road trip at the Indiana Pacers on Friday.

After sweeping five straight at home to run its record to 10-3, Detroit began a span in which it plays nine of 11 on the road with a 99-95 loss at Milwaukee on Wednesday. The Bucks blocked 16 shots and held the Pistons to 35.3 percent from the field, including a combined 4-of-18 by point guards Reggie Jackson and Ish Smith. "That's the game right there, absolutely," Van Gundy told reporters of the blocked shots. "That's 16 opportunities you don't even get the ball up on the rim. When you look at the stat sheet, it's really hard to figure out how the game was close. ... It was a frustrating night. We really didn't do anything well. I couldn't find any offense to run to help us." The Pacers, who were one of Detroit's five victims during its recent 5-0 homestand, won 116-113 at Memphis on Wednesday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, FS Indiana

ABOUT THE PISTONS (10-4): Guard Avery Bradley was one of the only Detroit players to find an offensive rhythm on Wednesday, finishing with a season-high 28 points while making 6-of-10 3-pointers. The defensive stalwart is averaging 22.2 points while hitting 48.6 percent of his long-range attempts in six games this month, with his 14-point effort against Indiana the only one of the bunch in which he fell shy of 20. Rookie Luke Kennard continued to earn more playing time and finished with 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench.

ABOUT THE PACERS (7-8): Veteran point guard Darren Collison averaged eight points on 36.5 percent shooting during Indiana's recent 1-5 swoon, but his ability to break out of the slump was the catalyst Wednesday night. "I didn't want to make any excuses, but my knee actually felt great today," Collison told reporters after producing a season-high 30 points. "It's something that has been affecting me like the last week-and-a-half." The Pacers nearly coughed up a 17-point lead in the final nine minutes, prompting coach Nate McMillan to say that they "played three solid quarters of good basketball."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Pistons SF Tobias Harris made five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points in the win over the Pacers last week.

2. Indiana SG Victor Oladipo scored 21 points Wednesday and has a season high-tying four straight games of at least 20 points.

3. The Pacers won five straight meetings at home.

Preview: Heat at WizardsGracenote
Nov 16, 2017

The Washington Wizards won the battle of backcourts on the road against the Miami Heat on Wednesday and will try to make it two in a row over their Southeast Division foes when they host the back half of the home-and-home set on Friday. John Wall and Bradley Beal combined for 53 points in Wednesday's 102-93 triumph at Miami.

The victory improved the Wizards to 6-0 when holding an opponent under 100 points, and the team knows that a consistent effort on defense is the key to success. "That is our go to," Beal told the Washington Post of holding teams under 100. "When we do that, it is proven. We have success keeping teams under 100 and getting wins. When we continue to have that defensive mindset, we are a really good team. We showed a lot of glimpses of it (Wednesday)." The Heat are trying to find consistency on both ends, and coach Erik Spoelstra would like to see his team improve its mental approach. "It's neck up for us to be able to build this mental resiliency and be able to put our best game out there and sustain it for 48 minutes," Spoelstra told reporters. "That doesn't necessarily guarantee you anything, either. But we have these pockets during the course of games where we're just simply inconsistent during those stretches."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Miami), NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE HEAT (6-8): One player who appears to be putting in consistent effort for Miami of late is center Hassan Whiteside, who is averaging 16.3 points and 15.8 rebounds over the last four games. Whiteside had his effort questioned and was benched in the second half of a loss at Golden State on Nov. 6, but has since averaged 30.5 minutes while avoiding foul trouble and playing solid defense in four contests. Whiteside could use some help up front from power forward James Johnson, who is 5-of-16 from the floor over the last three games while averaging 5.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 25.3 minutes.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (9-5): Beal is struggling with his shooting stroke over the last two games, going 11-of-30 from the floor and 2-of-12 from beyond the arc, but is making up the difference by attacking the basket. The 24-year-old hit all three of his free-throw attempts in a win over the Sacramento Kings on Monday and then went straight at the Miami defense on Thursday, going to the line 14 times and knocking down 13 to improve his season percentage to 83.7 from the stripe. Washington outscored Miami by 13 points at the line on Wednesday by going 29-of-31 while the Heat were 16-of-19 from the stripe.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Heat PF Okaro White underwent surgery on Thursday to repair the fractured fifth metatarsal in his left foot.

2. Wizards SF Otto Porter Jr. shot 54.5 percent or better from the floor in each of his last 10 games.

3. Miami won in both of its trips to Washington last season by a total of six points.

Preview: Jazz at NetsGracenote
Nov 16, 2017

The only team the Utah Jazz were able to solve over the last two weeks was the Brooklyn Nets, who seek a measure of revenge when they host the Jazz on Friday night. Utah is 1-6 since its 5-3 start, with the lone win coming in a 114-106 decision over the Nets at home on Saturday to snap a four-game losing streak.

Losses to Minnesota - also at home - and at New York to begin a four-game road trip have the Jazz once again searching for answers, particularly on the road, where they are the only NBA team without a victory (0-5). "I want us to play well and eventually we'll get a road win," Utah coach Quin Snyder told the media at Madison Square Garden. "It's harder to win on the road, especially with a younger team." The Nets are 2-7 since their 3-2 start but gave the red-hot Boston Celtics a test before falling 109-102 on Tuesday to begin a three-game homestand. Six players scored in double figures for Brooklyn, which hit 14-of-35 3-pointers while losing its third straight at home.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah), YES (Brooklyn)

ABOUT THE JAZZ (6-9): Rodney Hood has taken a liking to his new role off the bench and he scored a season-high 30 points against the Knicks, but there was no enjoyment after his team blew a 12-point lead in the second half. "This one will sting a little bit," Hood told reporters. "It was one of the better games we've played in a while." Hood is averaging 18 points while making 44.7 percent of his 3-pointers off the bench, compared to 16 points and 36 percent in his eight starts.

ABOUT THE NETS (5-9): Rondae Hollis-Jefferson finished with 16 points and nine rebounds in the loss to the Celtics to continue a nice stretch for the third-year swingman, who is averaging 15.3 points and 7.7 boards in his last three games and shooting a career-high 49.2 percent. "I think it’s basketball development," coach Kenny Atkinson told the New York Post. "I think it's emotional development. He's maturing. He doesn't get down on himself nearly as much when he makes a mistake. He really focuses on next play mentality. He's really improved in that area." Caris Levert scored 15 points off the bench in Tuesday's loss while making 6-of-7 shots.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Nets leading scorer PG D'Angelo Russell (knee) missed the loss to Boston and is expected to sit out a few more.

2. Jazz SF Joe Ingles has hit 12-of-20 3-pointers on the road.

3. Utah won three straight meetings overall and three consecutive games in Brooklyn.

Preview: Clippers at CavaliersGracenote
Nov 16, 2017

The Cleveland Cavaliers are enjoying their first three-game winning streak of the season and are finally feeling good about the way they're playing. The Cavaliers will try to keep the good feelings coming and earn a fourth consecutive win when they make a brief stop at home to host the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

Cleveland dropped a 117-113 decision at Houston to begin the trip but knocked off Dallas two days later and came alive in the second half to pull out wins at New York and Charlotte. "Initially we started off the road trip in Houston and we felt like we played better ball," LeBron James told reporters. "We gave ourselves a chance to win that game, we did a lot of good things, and I think that carried on throughout a lot of spots on this road trip. So 3-1, at this point, we'll take that and hopefully use that momentum going back home and get a win." The Clippers are not enjoying quite as much success of late and limp into Cleveland to begin a five-game road trip losers of six in a row. "My job is to make sure these guys know that we just can't accept it. You may lose, but you can't accept it," Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers told reporters. "You have got to keep wanting to find a way to win that game. We are clearly in that stage right now. We've just got to find a way to squeeze out a win somewhere and then get another one, get another one and then get a guy back and then get another one and then now you're fixed."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FS Ohio (Cleveland)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (5-8): Los Angeles has been off since a 109-105 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday in which it allowed 32 fourth-quarter points. Guard Austin Rivers went 3-of-13 from the floor in that setback and is trying to keep his team's spirit up. "We can't afford to keep our heads down," Rivers said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "The games keep coming. Even if you wanted to keep your head down, it's not going to do you no good. We've got some guys playing their (butts) off but we're losing games. So we've got to figure ways to help in other ways. ... We all can do more. I can go down the line. Everybody. It's on us. It's on the core of the group to get this done."

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (8-7): James scored 31 points in the 115-107 win over the Hornets and took some time out after the game to praise the NBA's new scheduling, which includes fewer back-to-backs on the road. "We're old, man," James, 32, told reporters. "Whenever we get a chance to stay over for the night this season, we have to do that." James is averaging 28.3 points on 57.9 percent shooting with 8.7 assists and 7.3 rebounds in a league-high 38.1 minutes.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Rockets SF Danilo Gallinari (glute) and PG Patrick Beverley (knee) are both doubtful for Friday.

2. Cavaliers PG Derrick Rose (ankle) sat out the entire road trip and is questionable for Friday.

3. Los Angeles took both meetings last season after Cleveland won the previous four matchups.

Preview: Knicks at RaptorsGracenote
Nov 16, 2017

The Toronto Raptors are soaring on the offensive end and will try to stay hot when they host the New York Knicks on Friday in the opener of a quick two-game homestand. The Raptors scored at least 119 points in each of their wins during a 4-1 stretch, with the lone loss a one-point setback against the dominant Boston Celtics on the road.

Toronto turned some heads by winning both ends of a road back-to-back at Houston and New Orleans while scoring an average of 127 points. "I think we're just playing together, understanding the game plan each and every night," guard Kyle Lowry told the media after the 125-116 victory over the Pelicans. "I think everyone is locked into what we're trying to do. We're a good team." The Knicks are making the same claim amid an 8-3 stretch, although seven of the wins have come at home and they lost each of their last seven games against Toronto. Tim Hardaway Jr.'s late 3-pointer lifted New York to a 106-101 win over Utah on Wednesday to cap a 2-1 homestand.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG (New York), Sportsnet ONE (Toronto)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (8-6): Hardaway scored four points on 2-of-11 shooting in the opener of the homestand before averaging 27 points, eight rebounds, 5.5 assists and making 7-of-17 3-pointers over the next two contests. The emerging star had 14 of his 26 points in Wednesday's win in the fourth quarter, including seven in the final 32 seconds as he thrived on the energy at Madison Square Garden. "It was awesome," Hardaway told reporters. "Those are the moments you live for; you live for and you dream of when you're a kid. Come into a grand stadium like this and making game-winners, making go-ahead baskets and playing defense and giving the fans what they want."

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (9-5): It is no wonder that Lowry's emergence from an early slump has keyed Toronto's offensive surge, as the veteran point guard is finding the rhythm that carried the squad many times last season. "Coaches are preaching when you've got open looks, take them and be aggressive in all the things that you do," he told the media. After missing all four of his shots and getting ejected in a loss to Washington on Nov. 5, the 31-year-old was shooting 37.6 percent from the floor, but he's at 48.3 percent while averaging 19 points in five games since.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Raptors SG DeMar DeRozan averaged 32 points in four wins against the Knicks last season.

2. New York PF Kristaps Porzingis is averaging 21 points - nearly eight below his season average - over the last two games and shot below 50 percent from the field in consecutive outings for the first time this season.

3. Toronto SF C.J. Miles hit a combined 11-of-18 3-pointers in the wins over Houston and New Orleans.

Preview: Hornets at BullsGracenote
Nov 16, 2017

The Charlotte Hornets fell apart in the second half of a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday and suffered their fifth consecutive loss. The Hornets won’t face a team with quite as much offensive firepower as the Cavaliers on Friday, when they visit the lowly Chicago Bulls.

Charlotte was swept on a four-game road trip but looked refreshed early while scoring 67 first-half points at home against the Cavaliers before slumping to 40 after the break and dropping a 115-107 decision. The Hornets are making a brief trip before coming home for three straight games beginning on Saturday against the Los Angeles Clippers and are looking to turn things around against the Bulls, who are riding their own five-game slide and are tied for the fewest wins in the NBA. Chicago trailed by at least 20 points at the end of the first quarter in each of its last two games and could not find much offense in Monday's 92-79 setback at Oklahoma City. "At the start of the game we haven't been able to get it going," Bulls rookie forward Lauri Markkanen told reporters. "We have to come out and play hard. ... If we are competing at the level that we have been practicing, then we are going to win a lot of basketball games. But we have to give ourselves a chance and come out the gates playing hard. When the game starts we have to be ready to play."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), WGN (Chicago)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (5-8): Wednesday's loss did contain two positives for Charlotte with the return of shooting guard Nicolas Batum and a strong performance from forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Batum sat out the first 12 games recovering from an elbow injury and went 7-of-15 from the floor en route to 16 points in 32 minutes while adding six assists and five rebounds on Wednesday. Kidd-Gilchrist scored a season-high 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting - 12 points better than his previous season high.

ABOUT THE BULLS (2-10): Chicago committed to a rebuild by trading away Jimmy Butler and buying out Dwyane Wade over the summer, and the inconsistency of the young roster is on display nightly. Kris Dunn, a second-year player acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the deal that sent Butler away, made his first start on Wednesday and struggled, scoring three points on 1-of-11 shooting in 29 minutes. "I think the whole season is going to be part of the learning process for us," Dunn told the team's website. "We are young and we need to learn how to grow, improve, take it to another game and try to learn from it."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Charlotte SG Treveon Graham (quad) sat out the last two games and is day-to-day.

2. Chicago SG Justin Holiday left the team to be with his wife for the birth of their child and is questionable to return on Friday.

3. The Bulls took two of the three meetings last season, including a 118-111 win in the lone matchup in Chicago.

Preview: Thunder at SpursGracenote
Nov 16, 2017

A favorable portion of the schedule allowed the Oklahoma City Thunder to get back to .500, but the level of difficulty is about to go up. The Thunder commence the challenging stretch Friday night when they put a three-game winning streak on the line with a visit to the San Antonio Spurs.

After leaving the AT&T Center, Oklahoma City will visit a dangerous New Orleans team before hosting Golden State and Detroit to finish up a span against four opponents who entered Thursday a combined 18 games over .500. The stretch comes on the heels of victories over three losing squads - all at home - including a 92-79 win over Chicago on Wednesday. The Spurs won five of six before falling flat in a 98-86 loss at Minnesota, as leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge was held to 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting in the team's worst offensive effort of the season. "Guys competed and tried to give ourselves a chance, but I thought we had some key breakdowns at bad times," Aldridge told reporters.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Oklahoma, FS Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (7-7): Carmelo Anthony (back) returned from a one-game layoff to notch his first double-double with Oklahoma City, but he struggled from the floor along with fellow stars Paul George and Russell Westbrook. The trio shot 13-for-38 against the Bulls, which left them taking pride in a defensive effort that held Chicago to seven first-quarter points and a 34.7 percent mark from the field for the game. "[It was] the commitment to making multiple efforts on the defensive end, scrambling, being disciplined, doing what we work on and practice on a consistent basis," Anthony told reporters.

ABOUT THE SPURS (9-6): Foul trouble limited Aldridge to 28 minutes in the loss to Minnesota, his second-lowest total of the season, and it was tough to find reliable offensive options for a team still waiting for Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker to make their season debuts. "He has been the main actor of our offense and playing without him is hard," guard Manu Ginobili told the San Antonio Express-News. "We got used to relying on him to score and create. So when he got into foul trouble we ran out of resources. It's just harder when he's not on the court." Ginobili shot 1-of-6 as he and six other reserves combined for just 26 points.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Thunder entered Thursday ranked second in the NBA in scoring defense (97.1 points), while the Spurs were tied for third (98.9).

2. Oklahoma City C Steven Adams (calf) missed three games in a row and is questionable for this one.

3. San Antonio won two of three meetings last season and claimed four in a row at home.

Preview: Timberwolves at MavericksGracenote
Nov 16, 2017

The Minnesota Timberwolves are finally beginning to play some defense, which raises their ceiling considerably. The Timberwolves will try to hold a third straight opponent under 100 points when they visit the NBA-worst Dallas Mavericks on Friday.

Minnesota was allowing opponents to shoot better than 50 percent from the field through the first four weeks of the season and is still last in the NBA in field-goal percentage defense (49.3), but at least it is moving in the right direction. The Timberwolves held opponents under 100 points in each of their last five wins and put together one of their best defensive performances on Wednesday, when they held the San Antonio Spurs to 41.8 percent shooting in a 98-86 triumph. The Mavericks aren't much better on the defensive end and pair that with an offense ranked 29th in the NBA while shooting 42.3 percent. "There has to be balance," Dallas forward Harrison Barnes told the team's website of the offense. "I think we have guys on this team who can create off the dribble, who are good at that. But at the same time, I understand what (coach Rick Carlisle is) saying, just in terms of moving, making sure everyone's touching it, getting a flow to the offense. I think there's a balance to be had with both. Right now, in trying to get out of this rut, I think we're trying to figure that out."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (9-5): Minnesota is asking a lot of center Karl-Anthony Towns, and he is delivering. The Kentucky product, who turned 22 on Wednesday, recorded his fourth straight double-double with 26 points and 16 rebounds while playing 40 minutes against the Spurs -- the third straight game in which he logged at least 39 minutes. Towns' performance on Wednesday helped the Timberwolves overcome a rough night from swingman Jimmy Butler, who went 2-of-13 from the floor.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (2-13): Dallas began its four-game homestand with a 97-91 loss to the Spurs on Tuesday -- its third straight setback -- but is starting to see improvement, at least in effort. "We've just got to keep bringing the same kind of fight we brought (Tuesday) and we've brought really the last three games," Carlisle told reporters. "I think the last four games our level of fight is really good. We've got to get some more shots in, and we've got to get off the dribble a little bit. We're dribbling too much at times, and we've got to fight it out on the boards and do a good job with turnovers." Rookie Dennis Smith Jr. scored a season-high 27 points in the loss to San Antonio and is averaging 21.3 points over his last four games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Mavericks SG Wesley Matthews is 7-of-33 from the floor over the last three games, including 3-of-19 from 3-point range.

2. Timberwolves C Gorgui Dieng (finger) sat out the last three games and is day-to-day.

3. Minnesota beat Dallas 112-99 at home on Nov. 4 behind 31 points and 12 rebounds from Towns.

Preview: Trail Blazers at KingsGracenote
Nov 16, 2017

The Portland Trail Blazers look to take advantage of a struggling team when they visit the Sacramento Kings on Friday night for the opener of a home-and-home, two-day set. The Trail Blazers have won four of their last six contests after outlasting Orlando 99-94 on Wednesday and holding an opponent under 95 points for the second straight game.

Portland was tied for third in scoring defense (98.9) entering Thursday and holds opponents to 43.6 percent shooting to go along with an offense led by All-Star guard Damian Lillard, who is averaging 24.5 points after scoring 26 versus Orlando. The Trail Blazers hope to keep their focus against the Kings, who have dropped three in a row since their only winning streak of the season (two) and are second-to-last in the league in scoring (93.6). Sacramento won its last two at home - Oklahoma City and Philadelphia - but regressed on the recent road trip that ended with a 126-80 loss at Atlanta on Wednesday that caused coach Dave Joerger to tell reporters: “Losing’s one thing, but we’ve got to do a better job of competing.” Kings rookie guard De’Aaron Fox has struggled shooting of late, making 10-of-34 from the field over the past four contests, but had just five total turnovers in that stretch.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBCSN Northwest (Portland), NBCSN California (Sacramento)

ABOUT PORTLAND (8-6): Reserve guard Shabazz Napier has picked up his production of late while scoring in double figures three of the last four games, culminating with 19 points that included a 5-for-5 effort from behind the arc Wednesday. Lillard’s backcourt mate, CJ McCollum, also poured in 24 points in the win over Orlando and has shot at least 50 percent from the field in three of his last four outings. Center Jusuf Nurkic matched his season high with five assists last time out and is averaging 15.4 points and 7.2 rebounds overall.

ABOUT SACRAMENTO (3-11): Leading scorer Zach Randolph (13 points) scored 16 against Atlanta while veteran guard George Hill was the only other player who reached double figures with a dozen. Rookie guard Justin Jackson has cooled off after putting together back-to-back double-figure scoring performances, going just 7-of-31 from the floor over the past three contests. Guard Buddy Hield is averaging 13.4 points in November, but is coming off his worst game of the month as he was held to six points on 2-of-8 from the field.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Sacramento PF Skal Labissiere has drained 12-of-22 shots from the field in the last three contests.

2. Portland’s rookie PF Caleb Swanigan made his second career start Wednesday, but did not score in six minutes.

3. The Trail Blazers won two of the three meetings last season with each team winning on its home court.

Preview: Rangers at Blue JacketsGracenote
Nov 16, 2017

The New York Rangers saw their six-game winning streak end with a thud Wednesday in Chicago, but they will try to earn a split of the two-game road trip when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night. The teams have already met twice, with the Blue Jackets posting a 3-1 win in Columbus on Oct. 13 and New York winning 5-3 at home on Nov. 6.

Artemi Panarin scored in each of the first two meetings against the Rangers, but scoring has been an issue for the Blue Jackets with a combined five goals in the past four games. “It’s not one guy. It’s four or five guys that are struggling offensively,” coach John Tortorella said. “We’ve just got to keep on trying to work out of it and get something good to happen for us.” New York has played the second-fewest road games in the Eastern Conference, falling to 2-4-0 away from home after allowing five third-period goals in a 6-3 setback to the Blackhawks. “We got what we deserved,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. “We didn’t deserve to win and we didn’t.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NHL Network, TVAS, MSG-Plus (New York), FSN Ohio

ABOUT THE RANGERS (9-8-2): Defenseman Brendan Smith, acquired at the trade deadline last season and signed to a four-year, $17.4 million contract in June, will finally return to the lineup Friday after being a healthy scratch for six straight games. “Brendan’s handled this as a pro, stayed focused, worked hard," Vigneault said. "He wasn’t happy, there’s no doubt.” Henrik Lundqvist, who won all six games during the winning streak before he was yanked in Wednesday's loss, will make his eighth consecutive start.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (11-7-1): Columbus halted a four-game skid with back-to-back 2-1 victories -- both beyond regulation -- on the back of Sergei Bobrovsky, who made a spectacular highlight-reel save in each contest. “Right now, the Columbus Blue Jackets own the best save of the year in the highlights, and the second best save of the year,” Tortorella said of the reigning Vezina Trophy winner. Forward Lukas Sedlak, expected to be out six weeks, practiced Thursday 3 1/2 weeks after injuring his ankle.

OVERTIME

1. Columbus is 0-for-15 on the power play over the last six games.

2. Former Blue Jackets F Rick Nash has four goals in the past three games for New York.

3. F Zac Dalpe was placed on waivers Thursday by Columbus.

Forward Anthony Mantha has put the pieces together to make a profound impact with the Detroit Red Wings, so much so that goaltender Jimmy Howard told reporters that he thinks the 23-year-old can be a "superstar in this league." Mantha looks to keep the Red Wings churning in the right direction on Friday when they play the third contest of their five-game homestand against the Buffalo Sabres.

With two goals and an assist, Mantha increased his point total to 11 (six goals, five assists) in his last eight contests as Detroit improved to 5-2-1 in that stretch with an 8-2 romp over Calgary on Wednesday. "I just think it's part of the maturation of him as a player," coach Jeff Blashill told MLive of the 6-foot-5, 214-pound Mantha. "As you mature as a player, he gets more ice time. As you get more ice time, you get a chance to produce more when you're talented like he is." Mantha and his mates were blanked in their last encounter with Buffalo, but the Sabres are hardly singing in the streets after losing three in a row and six of eight overall as well as three straight on the road. Benoit Pouliot scored in Buffalo's 5-4 overtime setback to Pittsburgh on Tuesday and also netted the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Detroit on Oct. 24.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG-B (Buffalo), SN360, FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE SABRES (5-9-4): Evander Kane is enjoying the best start to a season in his career with team-leading totals in goals (10) and points (18) in 18 contests. The 26-year-old extended his point streak to four games (three goals, two assists) in the first period following a feed from Jack Eichel, who picked up his team-leading 11th assist on that exchange before snapping an eight-game goal drought in the second. The 21-year-old looks to build on that momentum versus Detroit, against which he has four goals and seven points in nine career meetings.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (9-8-2): Defenseman Luke Witkowski was suspended 10 games by the NHL for his role in Wednesday's melee versus the Flames. After being escorted off the ice following a fight with Brett Kulak, the 27-year-old Michigan native attempted to rejoin the fracas and was assessed a fighting major, two 10-minute misconducts and a game misconduct. Witkowski brazenly boasted following the match that he deemed his actions to be "old-time hockey" and said "I think it's good for the game," although the league readily disagreed with that assessment the following day.

OVERTIME

1. Detroit C Dylan Larkin matched Mantha with a three-point performance on Wednesday and has nine points (two goals, seven assists) in his past eight games.

2. Sabres G Robin Lehner, who made 32 saves in last month's encounter, turned aside 97 of 102 shots to post a 2-0-1 mark versus the Red Wings last season.

3. Howard sustained the hard-luck loss in the teams' previous meeting, but owns an 8-1-1 mark versus Buffalo and has yet to yield more than two goals in regulation against the club in his career.

PREDICTION: Red Wings 3, Sabres 2

# 8 BEAR'S BIG BOY 10/1

# 2 STICK 9/2

# 4 TOP CAT'S BEST BET 5/1

BEAR'S BIG BOY looks solid to best this field and the potential return justifies the precarious nature of the long odds. Could provide positive dividends based on competitive recent Equibase speed figs with an average of 81. Must be given a shot based on the formidable Equibase Speed Fig recorded in the last race. A solid 96 avg class figure may give this gelding a distinct class edge against this group. STICK - Should go to the lead and could never look back. Could beat this field given the 83 Equibase Speed Fig earned in his last outing. TOP CAT'S BEST BET - Has been racing quite well in races of this distance, going 5 for 15 under similar conditions. Overall, has one of the top earnings per start in dirt sprint events in this field.

# 9 CALL SAUL 6/1

# 8 QUE CHISTOSO 10/1

# 4 BELISARIUS (IRE) 3/1

CALL SAUL is my choice. The average Equibase class rating alone makes this entrant a solid choice. QUE CHISTOSO - Has to be considered against this field displaying competitive figures recently and an average speed figure of 99 under similar conditions. Is hard not to examine given the company run in lately. BELISARIUS (IRE) - Solid average speed figures in turf route races make this racer a key contender. Ran a very solid last race.

Rating: 4

#1 STELLA'S PRINCESS (ML=4/1)
#3 MAY BE SUSPECT (ML=6/1)

STELLA'S PRINCESS - This filly is in nice condition, having run a good race on Oct 26th, finishing first. This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Felix gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing. Ranks highest in earnings per start (EPS). A strong outing in this race can augment the lifetime bankroll. MAY BE SUSPECT - On Oct 11th this filly shipped in to win and looks good right back.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 QUEENOFTHEROAD (ML=9/5), #2 AWAY SHE GLOWS (ML=9/2), #4 MY LITTLE DARLINGS (ML=5/1),

QUEENOFTHEROAD - Can't really wager on this kind of oft beaten favorite. When checking today's class figure, she will have to earn a better fig than last time out to battle in this dirt sprint. AWAY SHE GLOWS - Tough for anyone who saw this mount in her last race to wager on her this time around. Don't think this less than sharp equine will do much running today. That last speed rating was mediocre when compared with today's class figure. MY LITTLE DARLINGS - Hard to recommend any horse with deteriorating speed figures of 81/72/56. This mare showed little last time out of the box. Should be difficult for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed figure. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put her on the vulnerable contenders list.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - STELLA'S PRINCESS - Coming off her last race with the top speed figure of 77 at Hawthorne. She is the filly to beat today.

#2 OLD DUDE (ML=4/1)
#3 CAPTAIN MAD JACK (ML=6/1)

OLD DUDE - The Oct 30th event at Laurel was at a class level of (89). Dropping down the ladder based on class considerably, so he should be in a good position. Colt took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. CAPTAIN MAD JACK - I like this gelding a lot here. He shows a lot of consistency, finishing in the money frequently. I think this gelding is very fit right now. I like the fact that Connelly brings him back to a race so quickly. This horse didn't run well on a muddy track in his last race at Parx Racing. You probably want to disregard that showing.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 UNDER THE GRAYDAR (ML=9/5), #7 BLACK JACKET (ML=3/1), #4 SELLING OUT (ML=8/1),

BLACK JACKET - Didn't perform too well last time out. Probably won't do much running in today's race. SELLING OUT - Can't bet on this entrant in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a short distance contest recently. This gelding garnered a speed rating in his last race which probably isn't good enough in today's race.

Preview: Pelicans at Nuggets
Gracenote
Nov 16, 2017

Two teams coming off disappointing efforts try to get back to what they were doing when the New Orleans Pelicans visit the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. Both improving squads were rolling along with five wins in six contests before New Orleans struggled to defend in a 125-116 loss to Toronto on Wednesday and the Nuggets could not score in Monday’s 99-82 setback against Portland.

The Pelicans ranked 23rd in the league in scoring defense entering Thursday, but were much worse Wednesday as the Raptors drained 59.2 percent from the field and 16-of-34 from 3-point range. “The rotations were bad, communication was pretty bad,” New Orleans leading scorer DeMarcus Cousins told reporters after the loss. “We let guys that are known shooters get wide open shots. That’s on us. We were a bit limited.” Denver scored 11 points fewer than their previous low this season Monday while shooting just 35.7 percent from the field after averaging 113 in their previous three contests - 22.7 from 6-10 center Nikola Jokic, who was named Western Conference Player of the Week. “We were in a very good offensive rhythm coming in here,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone told reporters. “And they took us out of our rhythm right away.”

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT PELICANS (8-7): Point guard Rajon Rondo made his first start of the season Wednesday in his second appearance since returning from core muscle surgery in the preseason, contributing four points and eight assists in 14 minutes. “I’m just taking my time and trying to do the right thing,” Rondo told the Times-Picayune. “I haven’t had any practices and these games are like practices. I’m just trying to make sure I manage it correctly. It’s a marathon not a sprint.” Cousins is averaging 28 points and 13.7 rebounds while Anthony Davis is chipping in 25.6 and 11.4, respectively, for New Orleans.

ABOUT NUGGETS (8-6): Jokic leads six players averaging in double figures in scoring (16.4), but must rebound from a rough shooting night against Portland when he was 2-for-9 from the floor with six points. Paul Millsap (15.7 points) has picked up his production by scoring 17 per game over the last four and Jamal Murray scored 50 points combined in the past two contests. Malone told reporters he expects to have Gary Harris, who is scoring 12.4 per game and shooting 44.1 percent from 3-point range, back in the lineup Friday after he missed the previous two contests with a shoulder injury.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Denver SF Wilson Chandler averaged 13.5 points the last two games - five better than his season mark.

2. New Orleans G/F Tony Allen is questionable after missing the last three games with knee soreness.

3. The Nuggets won three of the four meetings last season, splitting a pair in Denver.

PREDICTION: Pelicans 111, Nuggets 103

Preview: Suns at Lakers
Gracenote
Nov 17, 2017

Lonzo Ball's highest-scoring output of his 15 NBA games came against the Phoenix Suns and that might be why he will still be in the starting lineup Friday. Ball is averaging 4.5 points on 4-of-19 shooting over the past two games but Los Angeles Lakers coach Luke Walton said he isn't moving the No. 2 overall pick to the bench for the home tilt against Phoenix.

Ball scored a season-high 29 points (he also had 11 rebounds and nine assists) against the Suns on Oct. 20 but struggled in the rematch Monday when he tallied only seven on 2-of-10 shooting. Then came an even poorer effort against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday when Ball scored two points on 1-of-9 shooting and didn't play in the fourth quarter for the second straight game. "He's our starting point guard," Walton insisted after Thursday's practice. "So there's no discussion, no talks as of now of moving Lonzo to the bench. Nah. He's our starting point guard." Phoenix has dropped seven of its last eight games and its defense was non-existent while giving up 90 first-half points in Thursday's 142-116 loss to the Houston Rockets.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona (Phoenix), Spectrum Sports Net (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE SUNS (5-11): Center Greg Monroe started against the Rockets in his Phoenix debut and had season highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes, and he is also expected to start the Lakers. Monroe, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks in the recent deal for guard Eric Bledsoe, was inserted into the lineup because starter Tyson Chandler is away from the team because of a respiratory illness. Standout shooting guard Devin Booker registered a season-best 10 assists against Houston but scored only 18 points after scoring 35 or more in each of the previous two games.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (6-9): While Ball continues to struggle, second-year forward Brandon Ingram (26 points) and rookie forward Kyle Kuzma (24) each recorded career-best point totals during the loss to the 76ers. Ingram, the second overall pick in 2016, is averaging 14.7 points while Kuzma is faring even better at 15.5 and said the scrutiny Ball is under is more than a tad unfair. "I know he wants to play better and wants to be that guy," Kuzma told reporters. "I think he is going to be all right. The media and everybody in the country wants him to be a Hall of Famer, wants him to be an All-Star right now, but he is still a rookie. It is tough to play at this level for anybody. There are 10-year vets that play way worse than he does and nobody talks about them."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Lakers are 2-0 against the Suns this season after losing 16 of the previous 22 meetings.

2. Phoenix backup SG Troy Daniels matched a franchise record with six 3-pointers in a quarter (the second) versus the Rockets and finished with season bests of 23 points and seven 3-pointers.

3. Los Angeles reserve PG Jordan Clarkson has scored 20 or more points in each of the past two games and is averaging a team-leading 15.8 points.

UNLV vs. New Mexico Over 56

These two defenses are such a struggle, making this Over worth a move here on Friday.
UNLV is giving up 32.3 points per game as this defense simply cannot stop ranks 116th in the NCAA in total yards against.
On the other side of things, New Mexico is just as bad. They are giving up 30.9 points against and are 96th against the pass.
These two have started to open the playbook some too over the pass couple games. With both having poor seasons, things are starting to get more loose as the season winds down. That bodes well for this Over as they should take plenty of chances deep down field for us.
Some trends to note. Over is 6-1 in Rebels last 7 Friday games. Over is 7-1 in Lobos last 8 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
This number is too low given how bad these defenses are.
Back Over.
Good Luck, Razor Ray.

Northeastern vs. Stanford
Northeastern+8.5

The Huskies have an early afternoon game against Stanford on Friday. Northeastern is getting some balanced scoring from five different players who average nine points or more. They are taking on a Cardinal team that lost to Eastern Washington last time out and are dealing with injury issues. Senior Guard Dorian Pickens and sophomore forward Kodye Pugh are out with Marcus Sheffield dealing with ailments. Stanford has North Carolina on deck so focus could be an issue although they are coming off a loss. They have covered just nine of their last 25 as a favorite. I think the road team is a live dog in this one.

Pelicans vs. Nuggets
Nuggets-4½

The Nuggets’ stinker at Portland on Monday night notwithstanding, there are a lot of positive signs for Denver heading into this game. The Nuggets are rested, they’ve had time to work out issues that cropped up Monday and they hope to be a deeper team with the expected return of Gary Harris to the starting lineup. Harris enables Will Barton to return to the bench and add depth. And with Jokic and Millsap, Denver also has the size to deal with New Orleans’ Davis/Cousins two-headed monster in the paint. Toss in that Denver has been tough at home of late (5-1 at the Pepsi Center in November, including wins over Toronto and Oklahoma City) and the building blocks are in place for a cover tonight.

10* FREE NBA PICK (Nuggets -4.5)
Denver is worth a look here at home laying what I feel is a short number against the Pelicans. The Nuggets got off to a slow start, going just 1-3 in their first 4, but got things figured out and are 7-3 in their last 10. I just don't think this team is getting the respect they deserve at home and part of that is they are off an ugly 17-point loss at Portland, where they laid an egg. I actually think that's a positive here, as we should get a big time effort here. Denver is 5-1 in their last 6 at home and the only loss is against the best team in the league in the Warriors.
New Orleans enters off a 9-point home loss to the Raptors, which was a real disappointing performance, as Toronto was playing the second game of a back-to-back road set and off a huge win over the Rockets. I know this team has two of the best players in the NBA in Cousins and Davis, but the rest of the roster is sub-par and I just think this team gets way too much respect They also have a done a nice job beating up on bad teams, especially on the road. Not tonight, as this is a legit playoff contender in the Nuggets, who I think win this one comfortably. Give me Denver -4.5!

They have been hit hard by injuries to a pair of starters in Patrick Beverly and Danilo Gallinari. Their struggles will continue tonight against the resurgent Cavaliers. Cleveland is 20-6 ATS in its last 26 Friday games. The Cavaliers are 15-6 ATS in the last 21 meetings. The Clippers are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 trips to Cleveland. Give me the Cavaliers.

NCAA-F | Middle Tennessee State vs Western Kentucky
Play on: Middle Tennessee State -2 -105 at 5Dimes

Jack's Free Pick Friday: Middle Tennessee-2

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers have been fade material all season. The loss of Jeff Brohm was massive as they just haven't been near the same team they were under him the past two years. They have been overrated all season.

Indeed, the Hilltoppers are just 5-5 SU & 2-8 ATS in their 10 games this season. They did cover last week against Marshall, but they trailed 31-10 in the fourth quarter before scoring two late touchdowns to make it 23-30 and get within the 10-point spread. It was a very misleading final as Marshall dominated.

Quarterback Brent Stockstill means everything to Middle Tennessee. Well, Stockstill has only been able to play in four games this season due to injury, and the Blue Raiders have gone 3-1 in those games. He returned two games ago and it's no surprise that the Blue Raiders have put together back-to-back blowout victories.

Stockstill led them to a 30-3 victory over UTEP and a 35-21 victory at Charlotte. He has thrown for 445 yards with a 6-to-1 TD/INT ratio in those two games, and he has a 10-to-3 ratio on the season. He is the coach's son and wants to finish the season strong, getting a win here over the rival Hilltoppers to get the Blue Raiders in a bowl game.

Now he'll be up against a vulnerable WKU defense that has allowed 30-plus points in four consecutive games coming in. I think the Blue Raiders are better on both sides of the ball now with a healthy Stockstill. They were already the better defensive team, giving up just 24.0 points, 334 yards per game and 4.8 yards per play this season.

Western Kentucky is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 home games off two consecutive unders. Plays on any team (MIDDLE TENN ST) - average rushing team (+/- 40 RY/G) against a poor team who is outrushed by 50+ YPG, after allowing 100 or less rushing yards in two straight games are 39-15 (72.2%) ATS over the last 10 seasons. The Blue Raiders are 5-1 ATS in their last six games following an ATS loss. Bet Middle Tennessee Friday.

Dave's Friday Free Play:

1* on Dallas Mavericks +7

The Key: We are getting a nice price on the Dallas Mavericks today. With their 2-13 record, the public wants nothing to do with them, so that results in some line inflation. At the same time, the Timberwolves have won 7 of their last 9 and the public quick to back them now. But the Timberwolves shouldn't be playing 7 points on the road, not when they are one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA. They give up 108.9 PPG on the season and 112.9 PPG on the road. The Mavericks have been competitive lately, only losing by 7 at home to Cleveland, by 6 at home to San Antonio, by 13 at Oklahoma City, and actually winning outright 113-99 at Washington as 9.5-point dogs. The Mavs lost by 13 in Minnesota on November 4th earlier this month and will want to avenge that defeat. Take Dallas.

NBA | Clippers vs Cavs
Play on: Cavs -6½ -108 at 5Dimes

Free pick on Cavs -
As bad as Cleveland has played early, they have started to turn the corner. The Cavs have won 3 straight, all on the road and are 5-2 in their last 7. While Cleveland is trending in the right direction, the Clippers are on a free fall right now. LA has lost 6 straight and are just 1-8 in their last 9. The Clippers struggles can be pinpointed to the injuries of 3 starters, most notably point guard Patrick Beverley and forward Danilo Gallinari, their two biggest free agent signings.
Without Beverly setting the tone defensively on the opposing team's point guard, the Clippers defense has been able to stop anyone. LA has allowed 100+ points in 6 straight. That really puts them behind the 8-ball here against a dynamic Cavs offense that despite all their struggles is averaging 110.1 ppg and 113.4 ppg over their last 5. I just don't see LA being able to keep pace on the road.
It's also worth noting that there's something about playing in front of the big crowds (home or away) on Friday that have brought out the best in Cleveland, as the Cavs are 15-4 ATS on Friday over the last 2 seasons. Take Cleveland!

Play on: Northeastern +8½ -110 at BMaker

My free play for tonight is in the same game I'm releasing the side. I love the Over in tonight's Mountain West Conference showdown between the UNLV Rebels and New Mexico Lobos.

I won't get into this too much, as I don't want to tip my hand as to what side I'm playing, but what I can tell you is that I do not trust either defense in this game.

New Mexico has the much better stop unit, but it also falters against the pass. UNLV falters all around, allowing 461.1 yards per game, which ranks 116th out of 129 teams.

These two are going to put on a show on Branch Field at University Stadium, with a pair of rushing games that rank in the top 22 in the nation. New Mexico (22nd) gains 226 yards per game, while UNLV (19th) rumbles for 239 ypg.

And normally that's a good sign to expect a low-scoring game, as it promotes a running clock and keeps the ball out of the other team's hands. But they also have big-play running backs, and no lead will be safe.

Look for both to hit the 30s, the total to hit the 60s, and my 30 Dime Side to pair nicely with this total going over.

The Knicks head to Toronto after a brilliant homestad and the question is can they bring the fire from Madison Square Garden on the road with them to Canada?

Let's be honest we didn't even think we would be speaking of the Knicks as a team that could be competitive, let alone win at this point and juncture of their rebuilding phase, but here they are in a battle for second place with none other than the team they're playing tonight, the Toronto Raptors.

I don't think the Knicks are ready to beat the Raptors in Toronto but I do feel they will easily cover the spread as they bring confidence from their recent homestand and are not going to get blown out.

A look inside the numbers would support that theory:

Knicks play well with an extra day to prepare, they are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games playing on 1 day of rest. In fact the Knicks are playing well against the number right now in general as they are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.

Can't say the same for the Raptors who are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game, and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win.

Knicks cover.

My Friday free play release is the Clippers plus the points at the Cavaliers.

Cleveland is finally starting to string together some consistent winning - they return home after winning all 3 on the road their last 3 times out! - but with those wins comes the inflated lines they will be asked to cover.

Los Angeles is looking to end a streak of 6 straight losses both straight up and against the spread.

Perhaps the streak hits 7 in a row straight up, but I am going to look for the desperate Clips to at least be close when the whip comes down.

Los Angeles won both series meetings a season ago, look for them to at least be in the "ball park" tonight.

My free play for Friday night will be on the Over in the Pacific Division showdown between the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers, as the two old school rivals take the court at Staples Center.

Though neither rank in the top 10 of points per game, but they do allow a lot of points. Phoenix ranks dead last in allowing 116.8 points per game, while the Lakers are giving up an average of 106.5 points per contest.

Now the get together for a Friday night clash in L.A., and no matter how good or bad the Lakers are, there is no bigger party in the NBA than a Friday in Los Angeles.

The Suns have gone over in four of five on the road, while the Lakers have soared in five of six against losing teams. Most importantly, these two have gone high in six of the last seven meetings.

Play this one high.

Now about this complimentary winner

Let's keep this 16-5 win streak rolling, as I'm playing the Detroit Red Wings on the puck line tonight, over the Buffalo Sabres.

The Detroit Red Wings come into this clash short-handed, but what I've learned about many teams this season, is when they're up against it, missing key components, they play some of their best hockey.

Tonight the Wings will make up for the absences of Luke Witkowski and Trevor Daley, by taking out frustrations on the Buffalo Sabres with a convincing and momentous win.

Little Caesars Arena will be rocking on a Friday night, and the Wings will respond with the same offensive effort that just drubbed the Calgary Flames, 8-2, on Wednesday. Tonight marks Detroit's third home game during a five game home stand, so the Wings should be fine in terms of rest and fresh legs.

No traveling. No hotel rooms.

Unlike the Sabres, who are wrapping up a three-game road trip, after losses in Montreal and Pittsburgh. They've lost three in a row and six of eight, and now play their third road game in seven days.

Take the home team in a rout tonight.

NORTHERN ARIZONA AT ARIZONA STATE
PLAY: ARIZONA STATE -23.5

Northern Arizona has one chance to stay in this game at Tempe against Arizona State. The Sun Devils could come out flat off a great win against San Diego State and take the Lumberjacks for granted.

But even if that’s the case, there’s every chance ASU runs away with the game regardless. The shorter shot clock is an upset eliminator of sorts. The weaker teams cannot milk possessions as they have to try and get something up relatively quickly and they’re generally just not good enough to do so.

The belief among many who follow college basketball was that the 30-second shot clock would be a benefit to big favorites, particularly those who like playing up tempo. There simply are not many options for the less entries to keep pace over 40 minutes. Consequently, we’re seeing some really lopsided results in the mismatches and I don’t consider this to be any kind of fluke.

Arizona State loves to run and I don’t see what NAU is going to be able to do as far as slowing things down are concerned. It’s always possible ASU could have an off night shooting, or I suppose the underdog Lumberjacks could outwork the overconfident favorites. But those are variables that fall into the strictly a guess category.

What’s not a guess is that on paper this is a mismatch. Northern Arizona is 0-2 out of the gate. The lopsided loss to Arizona was expected. But the Lumberjacks also lost to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Monday. I have to confess I had never heard of this university. I sense that the typical Embry-Riddle student is probably really intelligent and a great bet to have an immensely successful career. Just not in basketball.

I don’t think the number on this game is high enough and expect the Sun Devils to win by something along the lines of 30 points. I laid the -23.5 with Arizona State.

Northern Kentucky at James Madison
Play: Northern Kentucky

I think that this game is going to be a blowout. James Madison is a train wreck of a program. Lou Rowe has been less than inspiring in his young tenure leading the Dukes. And after finally clearing the decks and dumping most of the guys from last year's team he has started his rebuilding effort in earnest. Northern Kentucky is a team that is much further along. They won 24 games last year and they have several guys that can put the ball in the hole. The inside-out duo of Drew McDonald and Lavone Holland is better than anything that Madison can counter with. And their two wins to start the season weren't even close, including a blowout win over East Tennessee State. This game is being played on a neutral site in Nassau. And I think that Northern Kentucky's experience is going to pay dividends for them here.

New Mexico -2.5 over UNLV

The Rebels have allowed 265 rushing yards or more in 4 of their last 6 games. Against the option attack of Air Force, UNLV allowed over 400 yards rushing. That doesn’t bode well for the Rebels defense in terms of being able to get off the field against the ground-heavy attack of the Lobos here. New Mexico has averaged 276 rushing yards per game (and 6.2 yards per carry) in their home games this season. On a 5-game losing streak, the Lobos are favored here with good reason. We look for New Mexico to take advantage of a Rebels team allowing 453 yards per game on the road this season. UNLV, since the start of the 2014 season, is 0-5 SU and ATS in games where the spread ranges anywhere from a 3 point dog to a 3 point fave and that is the case again here. Once again, the Rebels fall short as the Lobos improve on marks that have seen them go 13-7 SU their last 20 home games and 9-3 SU in their last 12 games versus teams with a losing record. Bet New Mexico in this late evening Friday match-up.

Buffalo +130 over DETROIT

OT included. The Red Wings are coming off a resounding 8-2 win over Calgary but they scored eight times in 27 shots on net. Eddie lack was yanked after five goals. After leaving Vancouver years ago, Lack has proven to be among the worst goaltenders in the game over the past five decades. That Detroit won and won big means jack. The Red Wings have been much more competitive this season than they were projected to be and for that, they deserve some credit. However, it’s worth noting that they are 2-5 against top-16 competition and their expected goals against ranks lower than Buffalo’s. The Red Wings are very simply better suited in the role of the underdog.

The Sabres are coming off another loss, this time in Pittsburgh by a score of 5-4 in OT. Prior to that, they lost in Montreal in OT also. While a loss is never satisfying, the Sabres have to feel pretty good about taking two quality teams the distance on the road. The Sabres metrics are great to be sure but they have been getting better week by week and now they are allowing far less scoring chances against. It may surprise you to learn that Buffalo has given up the fourth least scoring chances in the game. After playing Dallas, Montreal and Pittsburgh in three of its last four games with Washington thrown in between those, the Sabres take a step down in class here against a team that they are superior to. Buffalo is starting to come on and if its goaltending holds up, they are in line to go on a run. We’ll put that to the test here.

WESTERN KENTUCKY +112 over Mid Tennessee St

Compared to year’s past, 2017 has been a tremendous fall from grace for the Hilltoppers. After two years of Conference USA supremacy as back-to-back champions, Western Kentucky is flirting with the possibility of missing a bowl game in 2017. The Hilltoppers won a combined total of 23 games in the previous two seasons while they lost just one game in conference play over that span. This year, the Hilltoppers have tripled that number already as they are 5-5 on the season and 3-3 in the Conference USA. Overall, WKU has hit a nasty skid, as they have lost their last three games by an average of 11.7 points. The typically prolific offense that WKU is known for has looked nothing close to what we have seen out of this bunch in years’ past. Such a shift was to be expected because the mastermind behind WKU’s dominance, former Head Coach Jeff Brohm, left town for a job at Purdue. Under the regime change, the Hilltoppers have taken a noticeable step back, which provides us with an opportunity, as we are not exposed to spotting lofty point spreads with the Hilltoppers anymore. WKU has covered just two times this year, mainly because the Hilltoppers were still inflicting premiums on its backers. We are now the beneficiaries of a market overreaction to WKU’s plight.

By contrast, the stock on Middle Tennessee State is on the rise because they have won their last two outings while outscoring its opponents 65-24. However, beating down Charlotte and UTEP in Murfreesboro is not an impressive feat to revel at. The two teams combined have won just one game this year, epitomizing every bit of the word, cupcake. You know our take on teams that feast on the sweets and there couldn’t be a more prime time for a bellyache. Nevertheless, the combination of these two narratives has enticed action on the Blue Raiders. Steady steam has rolled in on MTSU from the get-go and now this spot looks especially good, as we can take back a price on the team that we’re suggesting has a better chance of winning. “100 Miles of Hate” as it is known between the two franchises has been Western Kentucky’s show. The Hilltoppers have won the last two editions and while the trend is irrelevant from a statistical sense, it provides Western Kentucky with an intangible for this game. The Hilltoppers have an emotional edge and for the seniors on this team, this is their last hurrah at home before graduation. Beating a hated foe that they have fared well against and securing bowl eligibility in their final home game would serve as a fine feather in their cap. While Middle Tennessee State is known for its home field advantage in Murfreesboro but this isn’t home. MTSU will certainly need all four quarters to subdue an opponent poised to play its best game but for us, there is more than enough value in the price of this underdog to get on board.

This is just a real bad spot for the Raptors tonight as this will be their third game in four nights. It also is their first game back from a very successful three-game road trip. They almost won all three games except for a point loss to the Celtics. However, as we always say that first home game can be tough for a team especially if they’re in a bad situation like the Raptors are tonight. The Knicks have surprisingly been playing some decent basketball winning five out of their last seven games. Earlier in the year, the Knicks actually won on the road in Cleveland. We will have no problem believing that they can play a game right down to the wire against this Raptor club who will be looking ahead to a big game with Eastern Conference rival the Washington Wizards. At the time of this writing, the Raptors are minus 8 and we will take those points with the Knicks.
