MegaLocks Friday night Bowl write-up..............

2017 IDAHO BOWL – CENTRAL MICHIGAN vs WYOMING

WYOMING -3 CENTRAL MICHIGAN (45.5)

MEGALOCKS LINE – Pick em
Sagarin ratings – Wyoming -1
“Vegas” Implied Projected Score: Wyoming 24.25 Central Michigan 21.25

The Game
Potato Bowl time, yo !
This is a sneaky-good Friday afternoon match-up as Wyoming battles Central Michigan on the SMURF TURF in Boise, Idaho. Wyoming had a fine 7-5 record considering that their star QB Josh Allen missed some time with injury. FIRE UP CHIPS finished up with FIVE straight wins and ended up 2nd in the competitive MAC West.
The Match-Up
Wyoming offense vs Central Michigan defense
It’s been really tough to watch the Cowboys’ offense this season. Even with a healthy Josh Allen under center the Pokes struggled to move the ball on the ground and through the air. The big story is the status of Allen. Right now he is expected to play, but as you know, a lot can change between now and game day when you are talking about a potential first round NFL draft pick nursing a “sore shoulder”. We did our work assuming he will play, although to be honest, we would be a little surprised if he risked a ton of money by playing in this game.
Allen has struggled due to a lack of weapons at RB or WR. Allen had just 13 TD passes this season (missed time due to injury), their leading RB has 474 yards and their top WR has just 520. Only one receiver had a catch of over 50 yards and that was a yuuuuuuge 53 yard reception by CJ Johnson. The Pokes ended the season ranked #125 (!!) in total offense and managed just 4.7 yards per play (#11 Mountain West). They finished up the 2017 regular season #114 in 3rd down conversions.
FIRE UP CHIPS had an excellent season defensively finishing up ranked #2 in the MAC in yards per play allowed, #55 in total defense (FBS) and #7 in pass efficiency defense (FBS). Amaze your local sketchy massage parlor employee with this gem – Central Michigan was #1 in the FBS in forced turnovers. They allowed just 13 TD passes all season and picked off 19. It seems to us that with Josh Allen or NO Josh Allen the Pokes are going to struggle to score points.
Central Michigan offense vs Wyoming defense
FIRE UP CHIPS were pretty average statistically this season (#71 offense FBS) but they did heat up down the stretch scoring 56,35,42,42 and 31 in their final five games. QB Sugar Shane Morris is a mortal lock to clear 3,000 yards in this game and has been solid this year, although to be honest, we are not crazy about the 13 INTs. That is particularly true when going up against an excellent Wyoming defense that was #2 in the FBS in forced turnovers. FIRE UP CHIPS have a balanced offense with an underrated RB in J Ward (988 yards rushing, 41 receptions), a fine 1-2 punch at WR (C Willis, M Chapman 1,400 yards and 14 TDs combined) along with star TE Tyler Conklin who is healthy after missing a lot of the season due to injury. It is no secret that FIRE UP CHIPS started to roll on offense once he got healthy. The bad news ? The Wyoming defense is excellent (#22 FBS, #1 yards per play allowed in MW) and yielded just 3,13,14,13 and 20 points in their last five contests. They had a bit of a SOFT UNDERBELLY vs the run but were excellent defending the pass (T7 FBS – 10 TD passes allowed).
Motivation / Intangibles
Wyoming – This is a bit of a tough read. There is the Josh Allen distraction. And our Wyoming INSIDERS tell us that they are not super geeked up to be playing in Boise against a MAC opponent. Colorado St was close to home in their bowl game and we saw how much they loved it.
Grade – Below Average.
Central Michigan – It’s a LONG way from home. And it’s cold, yo. The good news ? They are on a roll and can play the “nobody respects us” card. The seniors on this team have unfinished business (0-3 last three years in bowl games).
Grade – Average to Above Average.
MEGA BOWL BITES

As noted above both teams are excellent at forcing turnovers and are ranked #1 and #2 in the FBS…..The combined turnover margin of these two squads is (+24)……Central Michigan only played five home games this season and are used to being road warriors……Close your eyes if there are field goals attempted from over 40 yards….The teams combined to go just 5/10 from that distance.
Summary
Two really scrappy teams. Let’s goooo !

Josh Allen. Will he play ? Will he sit ? We feel that FIRE UP CHIPS are the better team (it’s close) and that they can beat the Pokes regardless of who starts at QB. If Allen decides to pass on the game we think the Chips win the game by at least a TD.
Conclusion
Official play: Central Michigan +3 -106 (sent 5:12 pm EST Dec 19) (play down to +1.5)

# 10 BAD GUY 8/1

# 6 ODIN'S STEED 5/1

# 1 NOW A FACTOR 12/1

I think BAD GUY is a strong pick especially at a such a nice price. Recorded a solid speed figure in the latest race. Can run another good one in this contest. ODIN'S STEED - Baker has this colt racing well and is a solid selection based on the decent Speed Figures garnered in route races as of late. Earning some nice money in dirt route contests. NOW A FACTOR - There is a strong possibility of an increase in speed as this gelding changes blinkers (on) for the first time.

The Walker Group Picks

# 3 QUALITY PRODUCTION 2/1

# 1 MASTERLY 3/1

# 5 JONAS G. 6/1

QUALITY PRODUCTION looks to be a very strong contender. Has strong early speed and will most likely fare soundly versus this field. Should be given a shot - I like the figs from the last contest. This equine has a wonderful win percentage in dirt sprints. MASTERLY - Has strong Equibase speed figs and has to be considered for a wager in this competition. Has a solid shot here if you like back class. JONAS G. - Going in a dirt sprint race gives this gelding a very good shot. Ought to come out sharp - I have liked the way this gelding has moved swiftly to the lead recently.

#2 ROUSSALKA (ML=6/1)
#1 HONOR BAR (ML=8/1)

ROUSSALKA - Glover has this filly signed up for the perfect event. HONOR BAR - Rode this thoroughbred on November 26th and Lanerie is back again in the irons in today's contest. The return on investment when Lanerie and Forster partner up is terrific.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SACRED STORM (ML=7/2), #4 DREAM GAL (ML=9/2), #3 DIVORCE (ML=5/1),

SACRED STORM - Really had to show me much more than that last time out. Never made much of an impact. DREAM GAL - This questionable contender will likely be at the back of the pack as this bunch crosses the finish. DIVORCE - Today's race is 6 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a short distance race in the last couple months. Not the best of signals.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - HONOR BAR - Watch out for this filly. Forster gives her Lasix for the second straight time. My historical data says this thoroughbred should perform well today.

#6 REQUEST A LAWYER (ML=6/1)

REQUEST A LAWYER - You probably want to toss out that last clash at Mountaineer Park on the mud where he finished out of the money. Should do well today without the slop. This animal is utmost in earnings per start (EPS). He looks solid in today's event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 READY TO FIGHT (ML=4/5), #5 DAYJUR BEST (ML=5/1), #4 JODYNBUD (ML=8/1),

READY TO FIGHT - You always believe this animal has a shot to be victorious, but he fails most of the time. DAYJUR BEST - Equibase speed figures tell a tale of dropping physical condition. Should have at least finished in the money in the last two months in a sprint event to be worth the chance at nominal odds in a sprint. This questionable contender ran a mediocre speed figure last time out. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will likely suffer defeat in today's race running that figure. JODYNBUD - Not easy to play any thoroughbred in a sprint race at 8/1 when he hasn't shown any successful endeavors in sprints in the last two months. Don't feel this racer will make a winning move in today's race. That last speed rating was substandard when compared with today's class figure.

Bahamas Bowl UAB vs. Ohio Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 12/09/2017

BAHAMAS BOWL STORYLINES

1. Two years after the school shut down its football program amidst financial concerns, UAB won a school-record eight games to earn its second-ever bowl berth. The Blazers, guided by National Coach of the Year candidate Bill Clark, will face Ohio in the Bahamas Bowl on Friday, Dec. 22. UAB earned its invitation to the island paradise by finishing second in the West Division of Conference USA, thanks in part to a ground attack which produced 27 touchdowns.

2. Ohio finished second in the MAC's East Division, one game behind Akron. The Bobcats lost to the Zips 37-34 in the penultimate game of the regular season, snapping their four-game winning streak, and capped the campaign with another narrow setback at Buffalo. Despite the consecutive defeats to end the season, the speedy Bobcats still finished the slate ranked 14th in the nation in scoring with an average of 38.9 points.

3. Under Clark, who was named the conference's top coach, the Blazers went 6-0 at home and revitalized their fan base to lead the league in attendance. Defensive back Darious Williams earned All-American Honorable Mention laurels after leading the squad with five interceptions, including one pick in four straight games. Ohio is paced by dual threat quarterback Nathan Rourke, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for three more in a 45-28 win over Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 1.

TV: 12:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Ohio -7.5. O/U: 57.5

ABOUT UAB (8-4, 6-2 Conference USA): The last time the Blazers played in a bowl game was in 2004, when they participated in the Hawaii Bowl, and getting back was not an easy endeavor after the program was shut down in 2014. Quarterback A.J. Erdely passed for 2,077 yards with 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions while rushing for 289 yards and 13 more scores. Spencer Brown carried the ball 237 times for 1,292 yards and 10 TDs while Andre Wilson was the team's top receiver, hauling in 48 passes for 619 yards and six touchdowns.

ABOUT OHIO (8-4, 5-3 MAC): The Bobcats have won exactly eight games for three straight seasons but suffered bowl losses to Troy last campaign and Appalachian State two years ago. Rourke, who relished the time off to recover from several nagging injuries, racked up 2,018 yards passing with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions while rushing for 882 yards and 21 scores. A.J. Ouellette finished the regular season with 980 yards and seven scores on 184 carries.

PREDICTION: UAB 30, Ohio 28

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Central Michigan vs. Wyoming Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 12/09/2017

FAMOUS IDAHO POTATO BOWL STORYLINES

1. Will this be Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen's swan song? The rifled-armed 6-5, 233-pound junior had what many consider a disappointing season, completing just 141-of-251 passes (56.2 percent) for 1,658 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions while also rushing for 207 yards and five scores on 84 carries. Although only an Honorable Mention All-Mountain West pick, Allen comes in at No. 6 on ESPN NFL draft guru Mel Kiper Jr.'s top 20 list for 2018 NFL Draft prospects.

2. Will Allen, who missed Wyoming's final two games after spraining his right shoulder in a 28-14 win at Air Force on Nov. 11, be healthy enough to play? "The shoulder is getting better day to day," Allen told Wyosports.net on Dec. 5. "I've been getting back in the swing of things with some 7-on-7 and some plays in the team sessions the last couple days of practice. It felt good. (The shoulder) still isn't where I want it to be or it needs to be. There are some throws I still feel some pain, and some I don't feel anything." As far as skipping the bowl to avoid the possibility of further injury should he decide to turn pro, Allen said: "If I'm 100 percent, I'm playing in the game. I owe that to this university and to this team."

3. Which team can avoid turnovers? Both clubs thrived on forcing opponents to turn over the ball, with Central Michigan leading the FBS by creating 31 turnovers while Wyoming was right behind with 30. The Cowboys also had a turnover margin of plus-16, which was second-best in the FBS, while the Chippawas finished at plus-eight.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Wyoming -1

ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN (8-4, 6-2 MAC): The Chips, who had a 45-27 nonconference win at Kansas of the Big 12, bounced back from a 3-4 start to earn their fourth straight bowl appearance after finishing second to eventual champ Toledo in the MAC's West Division. Sophomore running back Jonathan Ward (988 yards, nine touchdowns, 5.9 yards per carry) and senior wide receiver Corey Willis (42 catches, 625 yards, nine TDs) both were All-MAC Second Team picks while senior quarterback Shane Morris finished second in the conference in passing, completing 226-of-407 attempts for 2,908 yards with 26 TDs and 13 interceptions. Senior linebacker Joe Ostman (12 sacks, 18.5 tackles for loss) and defensive backs Amari Coleman (10 passes defended, three interceptions) and Josh Cox (six interceptions) lead a defense that ranks second in the FBS with 19 interceptions.

ABOUT WYOMING (7-5, 5-3 Mountain West): If Allen doesn't play, it could be a long afternoon for the Cowboys, who ranked 10th in the Mountain West in scoring (22.3 points) and last in rushing (107.8 yards). Backup quarterback Nick Smith struggled, completing just 54.1 percent of his passes (40-of-74) for 471 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in setbacks against Fresno State (13-7) and lowly San Jose State (20-17), which snapped a 10-game losing streak. Wyoming's defense was one of the best in the conference, allowing just 17.8 points and 332.8 yards while featuring three All-Mountain West First Team picks in defensive linemen Youhanna Ghaifan (five sacks, 13 tackles for loss) and Carl Granderson (7.5 sacks) and safety Andrew Wingard (111 tackles, four interceptions).

CF (219) CENTRAL MICHIGAN VS (220) WYOMING

Take: UNDER

Reason: Your free play for Friday, December 22, 2017 is in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Wyoming has QB Josh Allen projected to go in the NFL 1st round draft. Even with All, the Cowboys offense that could manage just 21 points per game. Allen has missed the last two games with a shoulder injury, but is expected to start on Friday. Central Michigan really picked up the pace the 2nd half of the season, winning five straight games and scoring at least 31 points in the process. Central Michigan has senior QB Shane Morris and a core of four senior receivers, all looking to get noticed here on Bowl day. This one is more about Allen maybe not giving it his all here today. He likely won't want to get re-injured. The Chippewas are 3-11 O/U in their last 14 vs a winning team and 2-5 O/U in their last seven neutral site games. Meanwhile, Wyoming is 2-12 O/U in their last 14 overall games and 1-6 O/U in their last 7 non conference games. I like today's game to go UNDER.

Temple vs. Georgia
I'm laying the points with Georgia.

(Note the 1 PM ET tip). UGA is off to an 8-2 start overall and 5-0 at home after an 80-59 blowout win over Georgia Tech on Tuesday. The Bulldogs shot 58% and held the Yellow Jackets to just a .367 shooting percentage and Yante Maten scored a team-leading 24 points. Maten is averaging 19.2 points and nine rebounds and William Jackson II averages 12.3 points and leads the Bulldogs with 41 assists. Georgia is holding opponents to just a .397 field goal percentage and 67.6 points per game. Temple has lost both their true road games this season and the Owls are 0-4-1 ATS their last five games, including a 20-point loss to Villanova. The Owls barely beat Drexel as a 15.5-point favorite on Saturday while shooting only 39% and making just 6 of 21 from 3-point range. Shizz Alston Jr. was the only Temple player in double figures with 12 points. We're laying it with Georgia, our Daytime Dominator. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

My comp play for Friday night will be to lay the big wood with Villanova as they take on Hofstra from Uniondale, Long Island tonight.

This one has a little added meaning, as Pride coach Joe Mihalich is a Philadelphia native, and while he would like nothing better than for his team to pull off the massive upset of undefeated and # 1 in the nation Villanova, that is simply not going to happen, nor will the Pride be close!

The Wildcats are posting nearly 86-points per game while allowing just under 64-points per contest. They have been able to stretch margins by stroking a cool 50% from behind the arc, and while shooting always cools, I don't expect tonight to be the spot the 'Cats can't score from three-land.

Villanova has covered in 8 of their 11 wins this season, and they have covered in 6 of 7 on the road thus far. Hofstra just lost to Manhattan, and in their "big" games, they have lost touch with both Clemson and Auburn.

'Nova in a rout.

My free winner for tonight takes us to Las Vegas, where I'm playing the Duquesne Dukes plus the points against the San Francisco Dons. I swear I never know what the oddsmakers are looking at when they put lines on these non-conference, holiday tournaments. But there is simply no way Duquesne should be getting points in this game.

Duquesne (8-3) is in after extending its win streak to six with a 65-64 victory over Lamar on Tuesday, and is 2-0 in the Las Vegas Classic as the teams all converge to Sin City after opening with home sites.

Duquesne’s six-game win streak is the program’s longest since 2010-11, when the Dukes reeled off 11 straight. The Dukes are 6-1 in December, and they're playing with the right chemistry at this point, one that has their defense stinging opponents to a rather low 56.5 points per game. At the other end, Duquesne is averaging 78 ppg.

I do know the Dons return all five starters from last season, but I'm not convinced they've played an impressive enough schedule for me, yet. They're averaging 69.6 points - ranking 286th in the nation - with the best opponent being Stanford, which beat Frisco, 71-59.

Duquesne doesn't have an extensive rèsumè either, but its scoring defense ranks 20th in the nation and its turnover margin ranks 33rd.

I like the Dukes here, as they should win this outright.

My free winner for Friday night is in the NBA, as I like the Milwaukee Bucks to take care of the Charlotte Hornets, as the teams meet in a back-to-back, home-and-home series that tips off tonight at the Bradley Center.

And since we all know it's tough to beat a team in two straight, whether it's back to back, or even within a week or a month, I think the home team here will want to get the upper hand and treat the home crowd to an early Christmas gift.

The Bucks should be able to carry over momentum from Tuesday's win over the Cleveland Cavaliers after blowing a 20-point fourth-quarter lead.

The Bucks snapped a three-game losing streak with the 119-116 victory, and now catching a Charlotte team that is sliding down the Eastern Conference standings.

The Bucks, meanwhile, are sitting in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference, just a half-game out of fourth place, yet one game above ninth place. So every win at this point is a must, especially against inferior teams.

I'll lay the home chalk.

New York has really struggled this season on the road. Detroit is 9-5 at home and will be trying to get back in the win after the three-game winning streak got halted. Remember, this is a Detroit team that started December 0-7 before that three game win streak.

A look inside the numbers shows this game should be a stone cold under.

For the Knicks, the under is 6-2-1 in the Knicks’ last 9 road games vs. a team with a winning home record, 3-1-1 in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600, and 8-3-1 in their last 12 against the Central Division.

Detroit has seen the under go 5-0 in their last five on Friday, 4-0 in their last four against teams with a winning record, 6-1-1 in their last eight on one day of rest and 5-1-1 in their last seven against the Eastern Conference.

These teams have stayed under the total in eight of their last 11 games in this series in Detroit.

The Knicks had a hard-fought win against the Celtics last night and should come up a little bit lame tonight. Detroit is having their own offensive issues, so this one stays under the total.

My free winner is with the pucks, as I'm taking the Florida Panthers over the visiting Minnesota Wild. It is Friday night in South Beach, and Miami will be zeroed in on its hockey team that just took some lumps on the road.

The Panthers return home from a five-game road trip that saw them bookend victories with three losses - in Chicago, Denver and Las Vegas. It hasn't been a great month for Florida, going 3-4-3.

Minnesota, which is 6-3-0 in December, doesn't necessarily travel well, and arrives with an 8-9-1 mark on the highway.

This is a great spot for Florida, after a couple days off to unwind and prepare for a four-game home stand. The Wild, meanwhile, are in the midst of a four-game road trip, and I have to wonder if they'll be looking past Florida to tomorrow night's game at NHL-leading Tampa Bay.

Minnesota's third road game in six nights? I'll take the Panthers, who need a good win.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Ovie and the Caps try to avoid "Vegas flu"
Monty Andrews

The Habs take a holiday trip to Alberta, an original six matinee on Saturday, and Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals make their first trip to Sin City.

A Western Canada Christmas

The Montreal Canadiens will play two games in two nights prior to their Christmas Break - and both will take place in snowy Alberta, as they take on the Calgary Flames on Friday night and the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. Canadiens fans and bettors should get used to seeing them away from the Bell Centre, as they continue a seven-game road trip that extends through the end of the year. The Habs have seen much higher-scoring games away from Montreal, going 9-5-1 O/U on the road compared to 7-11-1 at home. The Canadiens split their Alberta doubleheader a season ago, losing 5-0 to Calgary before beating Edmonton 4-1.

Original Six Matinee

The Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins will head into their holiday break a little earlier than the rest of the league as they face off in a Saturday matinee at TD Garden. This Original Six matchup has been somewhat one sided in recent history, with the Bruins having won three consecutive meetings and five of the previous six. That dominant stretch includes a 3-2 overtime decision over Detroit in their previous encounter back on Dec. 14. The Red Wings have been a strong over play on the road, exceeding the total in four of their previous five games away from Detroit. And three of the past four meetings between the teams have gone over.

Ovi's Vegas Vacation

Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals make their first-ever trip to Sin City as they face the red-hot Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday evening. The Capitals are one of the hottest teams in the NHL at the moment, having won eight of their past nine games while going over the total in eight of their previous 11 contests. But they'll be in tough against a Vegas team that is looking to become the first expansion franchise to reach the Stanley Cup final in Year 1. The Golden Knights are an NHL-best 14-2-1 at home and have one of the top offenses in the league, entering Friday ranked third overall in average goals per game (3.5).

Injury Updates

* Don't expect Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews to be back in the lineup Saturday against the host New York Rangers. Matthews continues to nurse an upper-body injury - and the Maple Leafs are scuffling without him, going 2-4-0 SU in his absence.

* Bruins forward David Krejci missed his third straight game Thursday with an upper-body ailment, and it isn't known when he will return to action. Krejci has five goals and nine assists in 18 games; Boston is 5-3-1 SU and 8-1 O/U when Krejci records a point.

* The Montreal Canadiens have shut down defenseman Shea Weber indefinitely after he suffered a foot injury in a Dec. 16 loss to Ottawa. It's a major blow for a Canadiens team that leads the NHL with 557 blocked shots; Weber is third on the team with 59.

Player News

* The New York Islanders are getting major production from their first line of Anders Lee, John Tavares and Josh Bailey, who have combined for 39 points in 10 December games. The Isles sit at +650 on Bet365 to win the Metropolitan Division.

* It has been a much less productive month for Vancouver Canucks forward Sam Gagner, who has the worst plus-minus rating of any forward this month (minus-10) while recording one goal in nine games. His minus-19 season rating is worst on the Canucks.

* Over bettors have been rejoicing whenever New York Islanders netminder Thomas Greiss is between the pipes. The Isles have gone above the total in 11 straight games in which Greiss has appeared, and in 14 of his last 15 outings.

Stanley Cup Futures

* Is it time to take the Golden Knights seriously? Oddsmakers apparently think so - they've moved the expansion darlings to +1,800 on Bet365 to earn an improbable Stanley Cup victory. Vegas is installed at +250 to win the Pacific, behind only the Kings (+160).

* The Toronto Maple Leafs remain Canada's best hope of ending a 35-year national Stanley Cup drought, even while stumbling in Matthews' absence. The Leafs are +950 to win the championship; Winnipeg is the next closest Canadian team at +1,700.

* The Philadelphia Flyers have seen their Stanley Cup odds improve - at least slightly - following a stretch of seven wins in eight games. But they're still among the longest of longshots at this point, listed at +3,000 to win their first title since 1975.

Totals Trends

* The Vancouver Canucks are the hottest over play in the league right now, boasting a six-game streak heading into Thursday night's encounter with San Jose. Vancouver enters that game having allowed four or more goals in six of its last seven outings.

* The goal lights at KeyBank Center probably won't need new filaments for a while. The Sabres continue to be one of the strongest under plays at home this season, going below the total in 11 of their first 16 games in Buffalo.

Preview: Knicks at Pistons
Gracenote
Dec 22, 2017

Star center Kristaps Porzingis looks for a much-improved performance in his second game back from a knee injury when the New York Knicks visit the Detroit Pistons on Friday. Porzingis missed all 11 of his field-goal attempts and scored just one point on Thursday, but New York still posted an impressive 102-93 victory over Boston.

With Porzingis struggling, journeyman forward Michael Beasley stepped up to save the Knicks against the Celtics by scoring 18 of his season-high 32 points in the fourth quarter. "Thanks to me, the game was close. I kept it close," Porzingis told reporters. "Otherwise, I thought we should have won by a bigger difference. ... I couldn't find my rhythm. Michael Beasley had my back." Detroit had its three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday, when it was drubbed 110-93 by lowly Dallas. "You can't get too caught up in that because if you look at our schedule and you had gone back at the beginning of the year and tried to pencil in what you thought were wins and losses, you would've been way off," Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy told reporters. "So you play every night, and if you play well enough, we have a chance to beat anybody."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG (New York), FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE KNICKS (17-14): Beasley, who also grabbed a season-best 12 rebounds, was the No. 2 overall choice in the 2008 draft but didn't live up to the billing as the Knicks are his sixth NBA team. Yet he certainly is playing like a big-time talent over the last three games by averaging 28.3 points and 8.7 rebounds while making 33-of-58 field-goal attempts. "I'm just here for the team," Beasley told reporters. "Whatever they need, whenever they need it. Scoring, rebounding, defense, just trying my best. As humbly as I can say it, I just feel like every shot that I shoot is going in."

ABOUT THE PISTONS (17-14): Detroit's defense was sub-par against the Mavericks and leading scorer Tobias Harris had a poor night with 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting. When it was suggested to Van Gundy that the loss to Dallas was a blow, he quickly countered that chatter with a big-picture refrain. "The standings don't mean anything right now," Van Gundy told reporters. "We're 31 games into the year with 51 to go. It's not like we've got two games to go. We just need to play better."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Pistons halted a four-game losing streak against the Knicks on Oct. 21, when Harris scored 31 points in a 111-107 triumph.

2. New York C Enes Kanter recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds against Boston for his sixth double-double in 11 contests.

3. Detroit PF Anthony Tolliver is 9-for-13 from 3-point range while averaging 17.5 points over his last two games.

Preview: Pelicans at Magic
Gracenote
Dec 21, 2017

Two teams in dire need of a major boost meet Friday night when the New Orleans Pelicans visit the Orlando Magic after losing the first two on their four-game road trip. The Pelicans are under .500 for the first time since Nov. 3 after losing two straight and eight of the last 12 contests while injury-plagued Orlando has dropped six in a row and 17 of 20 after a promising start to the season.

The Magic, who were without their top two scorers Evan Fournier and Aaron Gordon due to injuries, were thumped 112-94 at Chicago on Wednesday while missing 22-of-29 shots from 3-point range. “We’ve just got to do more - do more without doing it in a selfish manner,” Orlando point guard Elfrid Payton told reporters. “Doing more doesn’t mean necessarily going out there and shooting 30 shots. It’s doing more on the defensive end, helping your teammate more.” New Orleans has given up 116.5 points per game over the first two contests on its trip and is 29th in the league in scoring defense (111.8). “The other team just came out and they wanted it more,” Pelicans center DeMarcus Cousins told reporters after a 116-106 setback at Washington on Tuesday. “I feel like we just kind of went through the motions as a team. They just wanted it more, period. No effort.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN New Orleans, FSN Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE PELICANS (15-16): Anthony Davis survived a scare in the loss against Washington as he had his right wrist examined during the contest, but x-rays were deemed negative and he finished with 37 points to raise his average to 29.8 the last four games. Cousins tops the team in scoring (26.2) and rebounding (10.6) while dishing out 5.1 assists per game and has posted six double-doubles in the last eight contests. Point guard Jrue Holiday is averaging 25 points and shooting 53.4 percent from the field over the last five games.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (11-21): Fournier (ankle) is close to returning after missing the last six games and Gordon has missed four of the past five - the first two with concussion symptoms and the last two with the calf injury. Center Nikola Vucevic has had more responsibility in December and put up some big numbers, averaging 22.2 points and 12.8 rebounds over the last nine contests. Rookie forward Jonathan Isaac tweaked his ankle against Chicago in his second game back since missing 17 with the same injury, and is questionable.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Orlando F Jonathon Simmons went 2-of-9 from the field and scored six points against Chicago after averaging 21.6 the previous five games.

2. The Magic has won five of the last six meetings, including a 115-99 triumph on Oct. 30 in New Orleans.

3. Pelicans PG Rajon Rondo, averaging a team-high 7.6 assists, is questionable after leaving the last game with a knee injury.

Preview: Wizards at Nets
Gracenote
Dec 21, 2017

The Washington Wizards head to Brooklyn for the second time in less than two weeks and will try to avenge an earlier loss to the Nets when the teams meet Friday night. Playing without star point guard John Wall, the Wizards dropped a 103-98 decision at Brooklyn on Dec. 12, which happens to be the last win for the Nets.

Wall returned the next night when Washington began a 3-1 homestand that was capped by Tuesday's 116-106 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, and he seems to be completely past the recent knee issues that caused him to miss nine games. "Basically, them telling me to go out there and be aggressive and don't worry about minutes and go play," Wall told reporters after an 18-point, 10-assist effort versus the Pelicans. "Coach has been telling me since the last game. I went out there without thinking about when I was coming out of the game or when I'm going back in, just trying to play and make the right reads." Brooklyn lost four straight since the win over the Wizards while averaging 96.8 points. Three of the four defeats came at home, including the 104-99 setback against Sacramento on Wednesday.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN Washington, YES (Brooklyn)

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (17-14): While Wall is giving indications he's just about at full speed, backup forward Mike Scott is showing no signs of slowing down a phenomenal shooting stretch. "It doesn't matter if we talk about it, it's not gonna jinx him," coach Scott Brooks. "He's been shooting the ball so well." Scott's 24 points against New Orleans was a season high and he was 11-for-15 from the floor to leave the Virginia product at 53-for-72 over an eight-game stretch.

ABOUT THE NETS (11-19): Brooklyn was behind 36-20 after one quarter against Sacramento as it continued a recent trend of poor starts, having trailed by at least 11 points at halftime in every game of the losing streak. "Giving up 36 points in the first quarter — you can't get in a hole like that. It is disappointment in our defense and our defensive mentality to start the game," coach Kenny Atkinson told the media. "We let our guard down in the first quarter. Dug a hole, and too deep of a hole." Six players scored in double figures for the Nets with Spencer Dinwiddie's 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting led the way.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Wizards leading scorer G Bradley Beal missed all seven of his 3-point tries and shot 11-for-33 overall in the loss at Brooklyn earlier this month.

2. Nets C Jahlil Okafor has not seen any action in the last two games as Atkinson gives him more time to get in shape and integrated into the system.

3. Wall is shooting 35.4 percent since returning from the knee injury.

Preview: Mavericks at Heat
Gracenote
Dec 21, 2017

The Miami Heat are starting to find their top form with five wins in the last seven games and hope to continue the trend when they open a four-game homestand against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday. Miami knocked off Boston 90-89 on Wednesday without its top two scorers as former Celtics center Kelly Olynyk drained six 3-pointers en route to a season-high 32 points.

“We’re getting there,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters. “Each painful step that we take in this 82-game ride, we’re learning tough lessons. We’re feeling pain. We’re improving on things. Sometimes it’s one step back, two steps forward.” Miami hopes to turn its fortunes around at home where it has lost seven of 13 games this season and faces a Dallas team that is coming off one of its best games of the season. Rookie guard Dennis Smith Jr. returned after missing six games with a strained hip to score 15 points and hand out five assists in 21 minutes as the Mavericks rolled over Detroit 110-93 on Wednesday for just their second win in eight contests. “I was just coming out trying to do what I do,” Smith, who is averaging 14.4 points in 24 games, told reporters. “My legs were heavy at first. I had to get my second wind.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Dallas), FSN Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (9-23): Forward Harrison Barnes led the way with 25 points in the win over Detroit and leads the team in scoring (18.5) and rebounds (7.1) while playing in all 32 games. Coach Rick Carlisle told reporters it’s never good to have an injury but Smith needed a breather 24 games into his rookie campaign, and the ninth-overall pick in the last draft provided a spark for Dallas. Guard Yogi Ferrell continues to get more minutes and he is making the best of them, averaging 14 points over the last five games and 11.7 this month.

ABOUT THE HEAT (16-15): Guard Goran Dragic (elbow) and forward James Johnson (ankle) each missed the last two games and center Hassan Whiteside (knee) sat out his 11th straight game Wednesday, taking 42.4 points out of the lineup. Forward Josh Richardson has picked up some of the slack, averaging 24.3 points over the last three games to raise his season mark to 11.6 - fourth on the team. Miami needs more consistency out of guard Dion Waiters (14.7 points), who scored 23 in a loss at Atlanta before managing 10 on 3-of-11 shooting versus Boston.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Dallas F Dirk Nowitzki needs one 3-pointer to snap a tie with Chauncey Billups (1,830) for 12th on the NBA’s all-time list.

2. Olynyk is averaging 11.6 points and 5.5 rebounds in December after putting up 7.9 and 4.7, respectively, last month.

3. The Heat had won three straight meetings before dropping a 96-89 decision at Dallas last February.

Preview: Clippers at Rockets
Gracenote
Dec 21, 2017

The winning streak is finally over for the Houston Rockets, and Chris Paul is back on the injury report. The Rockets will try to pick themselves up after a rare loss and win for the 15th time in 16 games when they host Paul's former team, the Los Angeles Clippers, on Friday.

Houston won 14 straight after Paul returned from a knee injury but watched the streak come to an end with a 122-116 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday as Paul left in the fourth quarter with a left adductor strain. Paul is considered day-to-day and is in danger of missing the date with Los Angeles, with which he earned First-Team All-NBA honors in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and led to the playoffs in each of his six seasons there. The Clippers won't have one of their biggest acquisitions from that trade around for the game either, as point guard Patrick Beverley is done for the year with a knee injury and is one of three Clippers starters out of the lineup. Guard Austin Rivers is the one benefitting most from Beverley's absence and went for 21 points on Wednesday as the Clippers knocked off the Phoenix Suns 108-95 to snap a three-game slide.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, FS Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (12-18): Milos Teodosic was brought on to take over Paul's role as the primary distributor and dealt with his own injury while missing 22 games due to foot problems. The 30-year-old rookie is beginning to settle in and handed out a season-best eight assists in 27 minutes on Wednesday. Teodosic is averaging just 8.3 points on 32.8 percent shooting but is beginning to get the hang of throwing lobs up to center DeAndre Jordan, who went 5-of-7 from the floor on Wednesday and finished with 12 points and 20 rebounds for his sixth straight double-double.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (25-5): Even if Paul is out, Houston still has an MVP candidate in James Harden, who kept the team in the game on Wednesday by scoring 51 points and handing out nine assists. "You can't stop Harden," Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball told reporters. "You can try to slow him down, it's the best you can do. Make everything hard for him. Try and get him as tired as possible. But as far as stopping him, you can't stop him." Teams aren't having much luck slowing down Harden, who leads the NBA in scoring (31.9 points) while ranking third in assists (9.03).

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Clippers SF Danilo Gallinari was diagnosed with a partial tear in his left glute muscle and will be out indefinitely.

2. Rockets C Clint Capela (heel) sat out Wednesday and is day-to-day.

3. Houston took two of three from Los Angeles last season despite Harden being limited to 23.3 points, 8.3 assists and 7.3 rebounds in the meetings.

PREDICTION: Rockets 123, Clippers 103

Preview: Hornets at Bucks
Gracenote
Dec 21, 2017

Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks will try to avoid a letdown after perhaps their biggest win of the season when they host the slumping Charlotte Hornets on Friday in the front end of a home-and-home set. Behind 27 points, 14 rebounds and a season high-tying eight assists from Antetokounmpo, the Bucks got past red-hot Cleveland 119-116 on Tuesday to begin a two-game homestand.

"It was a big step for our team. It shows maturity," Antetokounmpo told reporters after his team staved off a fourth-quarter rally. "Usually, in a situation like that, we give the game away." Antetokounmpo ranks second in the NBA with a scoring average of 29.7 points and the only time he was held under 20 came at Charlotte on Nov. 1, when he finished with 14 points on 5-of-16 shooting. The Hornets were 5-3 after that result but soon thereafter dipped below .500 and are currently burying themselves amid a 3-11 stretch. They took an early lead against streaking Toronto on Wednesday before falling apart defensively in a 129-111 loss.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Charlotte), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (11-20): Jeremy Lamb produced a career-high 32 points against the Raptors, making 11-of-17 shots after nine straight games in which he was under 50 percent from the field. "My teammates put me in great positions to score, and I was able to knock shots down," Lamb told reporters. "But we were down 20 the whole game, so it doesn't really mean much. We've just got to play better." Forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who had two double-doubles in his previous four games, left Wednesday's loss with a shoulder injury and he is day-to-day.

ABOUT THE BUCKS (16-13): Milwaukee is now 12-7 with point guard Eric Bledsoe in the lineup and the Kentucky product scored 26 points - his second-highest total since arriving via trade in November - in the win over Cleveland. Fellow guard Malcolm Brogdon is averaging 18 points while making 7-of-12 3-pointers over the last two games and hit double digits in all but one game this month as he gets more accustomed to his bench role. Brogdon had 20 points and four assists in the previous meeting with the Hornets.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Milwaukee made a franchise-record 19 3-pointers and F Khris Middleton scored a career-high 43 points in the loss at Charlotte last month.

2. Hornets PG Kemba Walker is averaging 12.7 points - more than eight below his mark for the season - while shooting 15-for-51 over the last three games.

3. The teams meet again Saturday in Charlotte to wrap up the four-game season series.

Preview: Hawks at Thunder
Gracenote
Dec 21, 2017

The Oklahoma City Thunder have won eight of their past 11 games, and come into Friday’s home contest against the Atlanta Hawks following an impressive offensive performance in a victory over Utah. The Thunder are above .500 for the first time since early November after Russell Westbrook finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a 107-79 home rout of the Jazz, and Paul George and Carmelo Anthony each scored 10 points in the decisive third quarter.

“You’ve got to have fun and embrace the game,” Westbrook told reporters after the Thunder scored 107 points for just the second time in their past 10 games. “Go out and compete and have fun at the same time.” Atlanta is enduring a season that is anything but fun as the Hawks have won a league-low seven games after Wednesday’s 105-95 home loss to Indiana. The Hawks have yet to win consecutive games this season and their starters were outscored 77-49 by the Pacers’ starting five. “In the second half we kind of (slowed) down a little bit, kind of let off the gas,” Atlanta rookie big man John Collins told the media after scoring a team-best 18 points off the bench.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN Oklahoma

ABOUT THE HAWKS (7-24): Atlanta’s top two scorers - Dennis Schroder and Taurean Prince - average a combined 32.4 points but together finished with just 16 Wednesday. Collins has been impressive, ranking fourth in the league in field-goal shooting (60.6 percent) after hitting 6-of-7 shots and all six free throws to go with nine rebounds against Indiana. The Hawks dropped from third in the NBA in 3-point shooting to eighth after making only 8-of-29 attempts Wednesday.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (16-15): Westbrook leads the NBA in assists per game (9.7) and George paces the league in steals per contest (2.45). Center Steven Adams returned from concussion protocol to score 11 points with nine rebounds against Utah, and is third in the NBA in field-goal percentage (63.3 percent). The trio of Westbrook (23.3 points per game), George (19.8) and Anthony (17.3) are averaging a combined 60.4 points per contest, despite all three shooting less than 41 percent from the field.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Atlanta G Marco Belinelli leads the NBA in free-throw shooting at 95.4 percent and has made his last 26 attempts.

2. The Thunder have outscored opponents in the third quarter eight times in 31 games - including Wednesday - and are 8-0 with seven victories by double digits in those contests.

3. Hawks F/C Mike Muscala, sidelined for 22 games with a sprained left ankle, will play a couple of games with Erie of the G-League.

Preview: Nuggets at Trail Blazers
Gracenote
Dec 21, 2017

If the Portland Trail Blazers are going to entertain any thoughts about competing in the Western Conference, they will need to figure out a way to defend home court. The Trail Blazers aim for their first home win in over a month when they host the Denver Nuggets on Friday.

A 93-91 setback against San Antonio on Wednesday was the fifth straight loss at the Moda Center for Portland, which is the only NBA team currently positioned in a playoff spot with a losing record at home (7-9). "It's unfortunate," guard CJ McCollum told the media. "We're playing as hard as we can, coaches are giving us the game plan, we're executing to the best of our abilities. Ball's just not going in the basket." The Nuggets lost two in a row and also suffered a home defeat their last time out by dropping a 112-104 decision against Minnesota. Leading scorer Gary Harris (elbow) and backup point guard Emmanuel Mudiay (ankle) both missed the game and are considered day-to-day.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Altitude (Denver), NBCSN Northwest (Portland)

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (16-15): Star center Nikola Jokic had 22 points and six rebounds against Minnesota but hurt his team with a career-high 10 turnovers. "The turnovers have been a recurring nightmare all season," coach Michael Malone told reporters of his team, which entered Thursday with the seventh-highest average in the league in that category with 15.3 per game. Jamal Murray helped make up for the lean backcourt with 30 points and he is averaging 22.2 while making 52.9 percent of his 3-point tries over his last five games.

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (16-15): Portland may have survived an injury scare when star guard Damian Lillard was able to return from a quad contusion in the third quarter against the Spurs, although he was impacted by the pain down the stretch. "If I could move, I'm sure you guys know I would have been a lot more aggressive and I would have been a lot more hands-on with the end of that game, but I did what I could," he told reporters. Lillard finished with 17 points on 6-of-17 shooting and McCollum missed his first 11 shots en route to a 5-for-22 effort.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Denver lost 10 of its last 13 on the road.

2. Nuggets C Mason Plumlee is averaging 9.3 rebounds over a six-game span, nearly four more than his average for the season.

3. McCollum scored at least 20 points in six of his last eight games against Denver.

Preview: Lakers at Warriors
Gracenote
Dec 21, 2017

The Los Angeles Lakers' tour of NBA title contenders continues on Friday, when they visit the defending champion Golden State Warriors. The Lakers lost at the Cleveland Cavaliers and home against the Warriors before finally knocking off a contender with a 122-116 win at the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

Los Angeles' young squad is hanging around with good teams and finally broke through while snapping Houston's 14-game winning streak. "Our guys haven't lost faith or work ethic in what we're doing," Lakers coach Luke Walton, who won a championship as an assistant with Golden State, told reporters, "even though we've been losing games." Los Angeles has a chance to end another long winning streak after the Warriors extended their current streak to a 10 straight with a 97-84 triumph over Memphis on Wednesday - becoming the fourth team in NBA history to record a winning streak of at least 10 games in five consecutive seasons. "It just says we've had lots of talent and it's a good time to be a Warriors fan obviously, or a Warriors coach," coach Steve Kerr told reporters. "This team has been growing and growing over the last six, seven years and these last five have been really special seasons."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Spectrum SportsNet Los Angeles, NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE LAKERS (11-18): Rookie forward Kyle Kuzma was the star of Wednesday's win while scoring a season-high 38 points on 12-of-17 shooting, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range. "I've got the same mentality every time I step on the court," Kuzma told reporters. "Play my hardest and just be locked in." The Utah product is averaging 17.4 points and 6.6 rebounds and scored at least 20 points in each of the last three games, including 25 on 10-of-16 shooting in Monday's loss to Golden State.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (25-6): Golden State spent the better part of the last two weeks playing shorthanded and was without three starters and five rotation players against Memphis on Wednesday. As usual, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant combined to pick up the slack with a total of 51 points in the win after putting up a combined 53 in the 116-114 overtime triumph at Los Angeles on Monday, but Kerr was still seeing room for improvement. “We have to get better for sure," Kerr told reporters. "This was not a good performance, but I’m happy with the win, and I’m happy with the way guys are competing."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Warriors F Draymond Green (shoulder) is expected to return on Friday or Saturday.

2. Lakers C Brook Lopez (ankle) was hurt in Monday's meeting and will miss the next three weeks.

3. Both of the previous meetings this season went to overtime, with Golden State winning each to extend its winning streak in the series to five.

Preview: Flyers at Sabres
Gracenote
Dec 22, 2017

The Philadelphia Flyers have turned the tables following a 10-game skid, with a 2-1 triumph over the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 14 serving as part of their current 7-1-0 stretch. The Flyers look to continue their good fortune on Friday at the expense of the reeling Sabres, who have dropped three in a row and 16 of 19 (3-11-5).

"When we went through that streak we were finding ways to lose games," said Dale Weise, who scored in Philadelphia's 4-3 win over Detroit on Wednesday. "Now we're sitting here 7-1 in our last eight and we're finding ways to win games when we don't play complete games. That's what I think good teams do." Brian Elliott turned aside 25 shots while making his ninth straight start and stopped 19 shots in the first encounter versus Buffalo. The Sabres were limited to a fluke goal in that meeting with Philadelphia and were blanked 3-0 by Boston on Tuesday, two strong examples why the team sports the 31st-ranked offense (2.1 goals per game). Buffalo also carries around another troublesome number of four, which represents its total home wins this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCSN Philadelphia, Sportsnet, MSG-B (Buffalo)

ABOUT THE FLYERS (15-12-7): Captain Claude Giroux set up three goals against the Red Wings to increase his point total to 11 (two goals, nine assists) in his last seven games. The 29-year-old Ontario native has 26 even-strength points in 34 games this season to match his total set over 82 games of his much-maligned campaign in 2016-17. "It got a little personal, yeah," Giroux said of the criticism he endured. "I try not to read too many things, but there wasn't a lot of positive articles in the summer, and I took that as motivation. I wanted to push myself to be the best player I can be."

ABOUT THE SABRES (8-19-7): Robin Lehner turned heads during Thursday's practice by donning former NHL goaltender Paul Harrison's old mask from the late 1970s and six games during the 1981-82 season. "It was an old Buffalo mask. I tried it on and I have a lot of respect for them," the 26-year-old Swede told the Buffalo News. "I took one off the dome and it felt pretty good. We'll see if we can beef it up." Evander Kane, who leads the team in goals (14), assists (17) and points (31), has eight points (two goals, six assists) in his last eight games.

OVERTIME

1. Philadelphia RW Wayne Simmonds has seven points (four goals, three assists) in the past eight games.

2. The Sabres assigned F Alexander Nylander to the Swedish men's national junior hockey team for the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship, which will be held in Buffalo from Dec. 26-Jan. 5.

3. Elliott owns a 7-2-0 mark with a 2.11 goals-against average and .926 save percentage over his last nine starts.

Preview: Wild at Panthers
Gracenote
Dec 21, 2017

After breaking out of a scoring slump in a big way, the Minnesota Wild hope the offensive momentum will carry over when they visit the Florida Panthers on Friday in the third stop of a four-game road trip. The Wild had scored seven goals in four games before erupting for five unanswered tallies in a 6-4 victory at Ottawa on Tuesday.

“I was happy that some guys that haven’t been having much luck scored some goals and got points,” coach Bruce Boudreau said after his team ended a two-game slide. “It’s always nice when they can gain some confidence by doing that.” Minnesota has fattened its stats against Florida, scoring 15 goals while winning the past three matchups, including a 7-4 win in its last visit to the Panthers. The Wild face another struggling offense in Florida, which halted a three-game skid with a 3-2 win at Arizona on Tuesday. The win capped a 2-2-1 road trip for the Panthers and marked the first time they scored more than two goals on the five-game trek.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Florida

ABOUT THE WILD (18-13-3): No player had been mired in a deeper scoring drought than captain Mikko Koivu, who had gone 24 games without a goal and 11 without a point before netting the tying tally in the comeback win at Ottawa. “Mikko’s goal, you could see the air coming out of a balloon,” Boudreau said. “We’ve talked about it, but it gets tough. You start to put pressure on yourself because you expect more, so I’m hoping this is a jump-start for him.” Eric Staal has four goals and four assists in the last six games.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (13-16-5): Making his seventh consecutive start due to an injury to No. 1 netminder Roberto Luongo, James Reimer earned praise from his coach following a 39-save performance against the Coyotes -- his fifth straight start yielding three goals or fewer. "Reimer is playing so good right now," coach Bob Boughner said. "If you make the odd mistake, he is coming up with the save." Defenseman Mike Matheson scored his first three goals of the season on the road trip, two of them game-winners.

OVERTIME

1. Wild G Devan Dubnyk practiced briefly Thursday for the first time since suffering a lower-body injury on Dec. 12.

2. Florida has killed off 20 straight penalties over the past six games.

3. Staal has 20 goals and 50 points in 68 games versus the Panthers.

Preview: Canadiens at Flames
Gracenote
Dec 21, 2017

The Calgary Flames got off to a rough start in the month of December with six losses in their first eight games, a stretch made worse by a 1-4-0 record at home. Calgary has responded to that slide with a pair of impressive victories and can reach the .500 mark at Scotiabank Saddledome when it hosts the Montreal Canadiens on Friday.

The Flames rebounded from a three-game skid with a 6-1 drubbing of the Canucks in Vancouver before squeezing out a 2-1 home win over St. Louis on Wednesday. "Believe in what we're doing and if we're playing well, the wins are going to come," said defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who scored the decisive tally against the Blues. "We just have to stick with it and we've done that and got rewarded the last two games." Montreal opened its seven-game road trip with a 3-0 loss at Ottawa in the NHL100 Classic, but bounced back with a rare offensive eruption in a 7-5 victory at Vancouver on Tuesday. The Canadiens dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Flames in Montreal two weeks ago and have lost eight of their 10 visits to Calgary.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, RDS, TSN2 (Montreal), Sportsnet West (Calgary)

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (15-15-4): The impetus for Montreal's offensive outburst against Vancouver was, surprisingly, fueled by the fourth line of Nicolas Deslauriers, Daniel Carr and Byron Froese, who combined for five points in the victory. "I'm not here for my points," said Deslauriers, who had 13 goals in his previous 225 career games. "But if I can contribute like this and take some pressure off our top line, it means a lot." The line could be shuffled, though, with the imminent return of Artturi Lehkonen.

ABOUT THE FLAMES (18-14-3): Calgary has gone 11 straight games without being outshot by an opponent and continues to ratchet up the defensive intensity, surrendering 13 regulation goals over the past eight contests. "We're trying to accomplish something that's going to help us win not only now, but in the playoffs when things do get tight," coach Glen Gulutzan said. Sean Monahan scored a pair of goals at Montreal on Dec. 7, including the game-winner in OT, but has just one assist in the six games since.

OVERTIME

1. Canadiens G Carey Price is 4-5-1 with a 2.78 goals-against average versus Calgary.

2. Flames D Travis Hamonic was not at practice Thursday after exiting Wednesday's game with an injury.

3. Montreal captain Max Pacioretty had two assists versus Vancouver but is mired in a 16-game goal drought.

Preview: Capitals at Coyotes
Gracenote
Dec 22, 2017

The Washington Capitals and Arizona Coyotes are streaking in distinctly different directions, so much so that one would wonder if the clubs could stay still long enough to meet for a game at Gila River Arena. The Capitals have looked every bit like the two-time reigning Presidents' Trophy winners with victories in 11 of their last 13 contests, while the Coyotes have dropped seven in a row and 10 of their last 11 (1-8-2).

Andre Burakovsky capped a career high-tying three-point performance with his second goal of the night in Tuesday's 4-3 overtime win over Dallas to open a four-game road trip. "It was nice to see (Burakovsky) get back on the goal-scoring chart. It was good to get him a couple," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said of the 22-year-old Austrian, who had just one goal in his first 14 games this season. The Coyotes can relate to the scoring drought, as they have mustered just nine during their seven-game skid (0-6-1) and yielded three tallies in six minutes of a 3-2 setback to Florida on Tuesday. "It's probably the most disappointed I have been with the team all year," Arizona coach Rick Tocchet said. "... We will get it right. We are going to weed some people out of here eventually and get this thing right."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCSN Washington-Plus, FSN Arizona

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (22-12-1): Captain Alex Ovechkin has erupted for 19 points (10 goals, nine assists) in his previous 12 games before being held off the scoresheet against the Stars. The three-time Hart Trophy winner scored a power-play goal in Washington's 3-2 overtime win over Arizona on Nov. 6, continuing a trend of tormenting the Coyotes that dates back to his scintillating goal as he slid along the ice in 2006. Ovechkin has 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in 15 career meetings with the Arizona-based club.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (7-24-5): Derek Stepan quietly has made noise in his first season in the desert, scoring against the Panthers to give him 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in his past 18 games. Fellow forward Christian Fischer also tallied against Florida for his first goal this month and fourth since he found the back of the net in the first encounter with Washington. Rookie Clayton Keller also scored against the Capitals as Arizona claimed a quick 2-0 lead before seeing the bottom fall out - like it did against Florida.

OVERTIME

1. Washington C Nicklas Backstrom is riding a three-game point streak and has four goals and as many assists in his last seven contests.

2. Arizona has a league-worst three wins at home, a full three fewer than the next Western Conference team.

3. Capitals D John Carlson, who scored in overtime against the Coyotes last month, is riding a four-game point streak (one goal, three assists).

NCAA-B | Colorado vs Iowa
Play on: Iowa -4½ -110 at BMaker

10* FREE NCAAB PICK (Iowa -4.5)
The Hawkeyes got off to a slow start this year and a big reason for that is they had to play several games without one of their best all-around players in Nicholas Baer. He's not going to light up the scoreboard, but does a great job of doing all the little things. When he got back up to game-speed this team has really taken off. Iowa comes in having won 3 straight in blowout fashion, which includes a 90-64 win as a 7-point favorite against Drake on a neutral site and a 92-64 win over Southern Utah as a 15.5-point favorite. As you can see they have destroyed their spread in their last two games, which I think speaks volumes to how undervalued this team is.
Colorado is a quality team, but I don't think they are quite on Iowa's level. The Buffaloes have are just 2-3 in their last 5 and have not faired well away from home. They lost and failed to cover both of their true road games at Colorado St (63-72) and Xavier (69-96) and while they were far from impressive in their 3 neutral site wins, beating Quinnipiac by just 1-point as a 17-point favorite, Drake by 5 as a 7 point favorite and Mercer by 9. Colorado is allowing 77.6 ppg on the road and will be facing an Iowa team that is averaging 81 ppg and shooting 48% from the field on the season. Give me the Hawkeyes -4.5!

The Portland Trail Blazers should not be favored tonight. They are going to be without their best player in Damian Lillard due to a leg injury. He’s the one player they cannot afford to lose. The Nuggets come in hungry for a victory after losing their last two games by a combined 9 points to Oklahoma City and Minnesota. So they won’t be taking the Blazers lightly despite the fact that they’re without Lillard. And they just lost to the Blazers in their first meeting a month ago, so they’ll be out for revenge. The Nuggets are 24-11 ATS in their last 35 games following a straight up loss, and 7-2 ATS in their last nine games following an ATS loss. The Blazers are 1-4-2 ATS in their last seven home games. Give me the Nuggets.

NBA | Knicks vs Pistons
Play on: Pistons -6 -105 at 5Dimes

Jack’s Free Pick Friday: Detroit Pistons -6
The New York Knicks will be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back tonight after a 102-93 home win over the Boston Celtics last night. Kristaps Porzingis made his return from injury, but went 0-for-11 and didn’t attempt a shot in the second half. He clearly isn’t 100% and it wouldn’t surprise me if they continue to rest him tonight.
Off such a big win over the Celtics, I think this is clearly a letdown spot for the Knicks. And New York hasn’t been nearly as good on the road as it has been at home this season. In fact, it’s one of the biggest discrepancies in the league. The Knicks are 2-9 SU & 3-8 ATS on the road this season, getting outscored by an average of 10.6 points per game.
The Pistons have turned it around here of late. They have won three of their last four games coming in despite playing three of those four on the road. And now they will be fresh as this is just their 2nd game in 5 days. The Pistons are a solid 9-5 at home this year and have one of the most underrated home-court advantages in the league.
The home team is 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings in this series. The favorite is 21-7 ATS in the last 28 meetings. Detroit is 5-1 ATS in its last six games following a loss by more than 10 points. New York is 3-9 ATS in its last 12 road games. The Knicks are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games playing on 0 days’ rest. Bet the Pistons Friday.

Dave’s Friday Free Play:
1* on Milwaukee Bucks -5
The Key: The Milwaukee Bucks are 7-4 in their last 11 games overall. They just beat Cleveland and their quotes coming out of the locker room indicate this is a must-win. And they will want to avenge a 126-121 road loss at Charlotte in their last meeting this season. But the Bucks didn’t have Eric Bledsoe then, and his speed will be key in trying to slow down Kemba Walker, who torched them last time. The Hornets have been brutal of late, going 3-11 SU & 3-10-1 ATS in their last 13 games overall. Charlotte is 3-11-2 ATS in its last 16 road games. The favorite is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings. Take Milwaukee.

NCAA-B | Duquesne vs San Francisco
Play on: San Francisco -4 -110 at BMaker

Free Pick on San Fran -
I like the value here with the Dons as a short favorite against the Dukes in Friday's first round action in the Las Vegas Classic. Duquesne has won 6 straight and are 8-3, but a closer look at their resume shows the Dukes have simply taken advantage of a soft schedule. Their 6-game winning streak has come against the likes of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Stetson, Delaware St, Mississippi Valley St, North Carolina A&T and Lamar. Not a single one of those games had a line posted. The game that really tells me this isn't as good a team as their record is their 12-point loss to Pittsburgh on a neutral court. While the Panthers are out of the ACC, they are way down this year.
As for San Francisco, they come in at 7-4 and have won 4 of their last 5 with the only loss being a true road game at Stanford. The Dons are one of the better teams in the West Coast Conference, as they returned 4 starters from a team that won 20-games last year. Last time out they won 52-41 at home over Radford and that's important to note as the Dons are an impressive 30-16 ATS in their last 46 away from home off a home win by 10 or more points. Take San Francisco!

ASA PLAY ON Oakland -7 over Eastern Michigan, Friday at 7:00 PM ET
Oakland has been patiently waiting for this game since losing 95-89 @ Eastern Michigan on December 6th. Oakland was favored by 2 in that road game now laying just 7.5 at home. The Grizzlies kept it tight throughout despite EMU hitting a whopping 56% of their shots a full 10 percentage points higher than their season average. The Eagles have played one of the weakest schedules in the nation ranking 298th in strength of schedule and having played only 1 top 100 team the entire season. That was a 20 point loss to Indiana. Half of their games (5) have not even had lines posted on them because of their lower tier opponents. EMU was in California last weekend and came from 9 points down to beat Long Beach State 85-80. Now back to the Midwest tonight before heading to Syracuse next week to take on the Orange which is a huge game for them as their head coach Rob Murphy was an assistant for years under Jim Boeheim. Oakland has played a tough slate already facing the likes of Kansas, Syracuse, and Michigan State. They played the Spartans just last weekend and led the game with 10:00 minutes remaining but lost by 13. Earlier this week they played host to Towson (a top 100 team) and won by 11 but the game was much worse as Oakland led by 29 points in the 2nd half. They are 5-0 at home this year with all 5 wins coming by double digits. We like this early season revenge spot for Oakland and look for an easy win tonight.
