#3 SHORT KAKES has hit the board in each of her last four outings, including a win in her 4th race back ... her last three "board hit efforts" have also qualified as "POWER RUNS." #2 HOPONTHEBUSGUS, a 6-1 shot, has produced a quartet of "POWER RUNS" in her last five outings, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in her 2nd race back ... she's coming off a "POWER RUN PLACE" finish facing slightly better company (+1) in her last start, missing back-to-back "Circle Trips" in that race by just a "photographed nose" at the wire.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 10 SABE MARCELETE 4/1

# 8 LOUISIANA VOODOO 7/2

# 6 SMARTFROMTHEGITGO 8/1

My selection in this race is SABE MARCELETE. She has been moving strongly recently while recording solid Speed Figures. Hernandez has one of the best jock ROI's on the grounds, returning to risk takers +23 percent. The average class figure of 60 makes this horse tough to beat. LOUISIANA VOODOO - Displays sound Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when matched with the rest of this group of animals. Ought to be given a chance in this race if only for the competitive speed rating earned in the last contest. SMARTFROMTHEGITGO - Has respectable early speed and ought to fare admirably versus this group of horses. With a respectable 52 Equibase Speed Figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this contest.

# 8 INCLINE VILLAGE 6/1

# 4 EMMETT PARK 7/2

# 2 MIDNIGHT DESTINY 9/2

INCLINE VILLAGE is my choice. Could provide positive returns based on respectable recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 100. EMMETT PARK - He has been travelling very well recently while recording strong Equibase speed figs. Has to be given a chance based on the solid Equibase Speed Figure garnered in the last contest. MIDNIGHT DESTINY - The speed rating of 110 from his latest race looks solid in here.

Santa Anita - Race #3 - Post: 1:29pm - Maiden Special - 6.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $54,000 Class Rating: 100

Rating: 3

#1 SHAKY ALIBI (ML=6/1)
#4 OISEAU DE GUERRE (ML=7/2)
#5 NEW DANCER (ML=15/1)
#8 ZIPMAN (ML=5/1)
#10 MESUT (ML=6/1)

SHAKY ALIBI - If this gelding gets out of the gate cleanly, he'll be tough to catch. This gelding has been working well, and the recent bullet work says he's primed for a big performance today. OISEAU DE GUERRE - That last workout tells me this gelding is set for a top performance. Earnings per start is something that I feel can be a key factor. This racer is ranked number 1 in this group. NEW DANCER - You'll be generating money right and left by turning your bankroll onto this jockey/conditioner combination. ZIPMAN - This jock and trainer are honest together. Win percent when teamed up is very hard to top. This horse obviously likes the conditions for today's race. Has garnered the highest speed rating on the turf at the distance and surface. MESUT - Roman comes to get aboard after getting to know the gelding in the last race. In my opinion, you need 'class' to be successful on the grass. This one has the highest average Equibase class figure in the field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 FACTORIAL (ML=6/1), #11 CASCADE ROCK (IRE) (ML=6/1), #7 CONQUEST SMARTEE (ML=6/1),

FACTORIAL - Disappointing speed figure last out at Aqueduct at 6 furlongs. Don't believe this mount will improve too much in today's race. CASCADE ROCK (IRE) - This gelding hasn't had any positive outcomes in sprint events in the last couple months. CONQUEST SMARTEE - In this circumstance, this pony's inability to close any ground in the last clash is a matter of concern. Don't feel this racer will make an impact today. That last speed rating was most unsatisfactory when compared with today's Equibase class figure.

#4 MR. COMPASS (ML=3/1)

MR. COMPASS - Got to appreciate a good work horse. This gelding's last work was second fastest of the day for the distance. This thoroughbred coming off a sharp performance in the last thirty days is a solid contender in my opinion. 68-74-83 are last 3 speed figures. Improving each time out is something he should do again in this event. Racing at a similar level as last race on Nov 29th at Turfway Park. I think Maker has found a good spot for him, and I like his chances right here.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 REPROVE (ML=5/2), #8 LO'S JOURNEY (ML=3/1), #7 RAGTIME REBEL (ML=4/1),

REPROVE - This chalk horse ran on October 8th and hasn't had a drill since then. LO'S JOURNEY - I cannot play this frequent non-winner. Gets the job finished now and then. A rallier like this one needs a speed duel to set things up and he isn't likely to get one this time around. RAGTIME REBEL - I'd like to see more preferred recent outings with morning line odds of 4/1. You have to be concerned that this vulnerable equine added bandages in the last race.

Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl Preview: New Mexico State vs. Utah State

NOVA HOME LOANS ARIZONA BOWL STORYLINES

1. New Mexico State ended the nation's longest bowl drought when it accepted the bid to play Utah State in the Arizona Bowl on Dec. 29 at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. The Aggies will be making their first bowl appearance since the 1960 Sun Bowl where they played, ironically, Utah State. New Mexico State, which is 2-0-1 all-time in bowl games, defeated Utah State 20-13 that year.

2. Last one out of Las Cruces turns out the lights. As one might imagine after such a long bowl drought, New Mexico State fans are fired up for the contest and quickly sold out their original required Sun Belt Conference allotment of 5,000 tickets. Las Cruces is just a four-hour drive down I-10 from Tucson and school officials expect around 10,000 fans to make the 275-mile trip which should give New Mexico State a pretty fair home field advantage.

3. Besides the 1960 Sun Bowl, New Mexico State and Utah State have a history, having played in the same conference for 26 years, the Big West (1985-2000) and the Western Athletic Conference (2001-2012). Utah State, which sweated out selection day because the Mountain West had just five contracted bowls for six bowl eligible spots, leads the all-time series 30-7 and will be making its sixth bowl appearance in seven years after missing out last season following a 3-9 finish. "When you get the call you're in, it's an extreme amount of joy and relief," Utah State coach Matt Wells said. "I'm excited for our players to go play another game, because they deserve it."
TV: 5:30 ET, CBS Sports Network. LINE: Utah State -4.

ABOUT NEW MEXICO STATE (6-6, 4-4 Sun Belt): Led by senior quarterback Tyler Rogers, who passed for 3,825 yards, 26 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, New Mexico ranks fourth among all FBS programs in passing offense (352.6 yards) with Rogers also ranking sixth nationally in total offense (348.1 yards). Jaleel Scott, a 6-6 wide receiver, was a first team all-conference pick after finishing with 73 receptions for 1,042 yards and eight touchdowns, while running back Larry Rose III was a second-team pick after rushing for 807 yards and nine TDs. The defense, which is tied for sixth with Texas A&M with 40 sacks, is led by a pair of first team All-Sun Belt performers in defensive end Cedric Wilcots II (8.5 sacks, three forced fumbles) and linebacker Dalton Herrington, who led the Sun Belt with 124 tackles, including 15 for loss, to go with 5.5 sacks.

ABOUT UTAH STATE (6-6, 4-4 Mountain West): The Aggies won three of their final five games to become bowl-eligible but come in off a 38-35 loss at Air Force to finish tied for fourth with the Falcons in the Mountain Division behind league champion Boise State, Wyoming and Colorado State. Freshman quarterback Jordan Love leads the offense and passed for 1,377 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions, while senior running back LaJuan Hunt rushed for a team-high 695 yards on 149 carries and scored 10 TDs. Senior cornerback Jalen Davis was a first-team all-conference selection after tying for the Mountain West lead with five interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns, while sophomore placekicker Dominik Eberle also earned first team all-league honors after connecting on 16-of-18 field goals, including a 52-yarder, and going 45-of-45 on extra-point tries.

Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic preview: USC vs. Ohio State

COTTON BOWL STORYLINES

1. Two of the most successful quarterbacks in the nation will be on display when fifth-ranked Ohio State meets No. 7 USC in the Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Dec. 29. Senior J.T. Barrett has thrown for career highs of 2,939 yards and 35 touchdowns to lead Ohio State while sophomore Sam Darnold boasts 57 scoring strikes in two seasons with the Trojans and is close to going over 7,000 yards passing in his career. The Buckeyes are averaging 42.5 points and USC is at 34.5 - 38.8 during its current five-game win streak.

2. While both teams can beat you through the air, the game may be decided in the trenches by both giving the star quarterbacks time to operate and opening up holes for talented running backs. USC junior running back Ronald Jones II has rushed for 1,486 yards - averaging 162.8 per game during the current win streak - and 18 touchdowns overall to give Darnold support. J.K. Dobbins (10 TDs) set a freshman rushing record for Ohio State with 1,364 yards while Barrett (732) and sophomore Mike Weber (608 yards, 10 TDs) have also had big years on the ground.

3. It will be the 24th matchup between the schools with rich football histories and seven of the previous games were in the Rose Bowl with USC winning four of those. The Trojans have won seven straight meetings, including the last showdown in 2009 when they defeated the Buckeyes 18-15 in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State won the Big Ten title by knocking off Wisconsin 27-21 and USC defeated Stanford 31-28 in the Pac-12 championship game, which in the past would have led to a trip to the Rose Bowl, but the College Football Playoff is using the fabled site in Pasadena, Calif., for one of the two semifinal games this season.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Ohio State -7.5

ABOUT USC (11-2, 8-1 Pac-12): Darnold struggled with interceptions early on (six in first three games), but was picked off only twice in the last five contests and threw for 3,787 yards overall. Junior Deontay Burnett has hauled in 74 passes for 975 yards and nine touchdowns, despite catching one pass last time out, while freshman Tyler Vaughns (51 catches, 690 yards, five TDs) and senior Steven Mitchell Jr. (41, 644, four) have also been productive. Linebacker Cameron Smith leads the Trojans defense with 102 tackles and junior lineman Rasheem Green posted five of his nine sacks in his last four games.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (11-2, 8-1 Big Ten): Barrett threw for two touchdowns with a pair of interceptions in the Big Ten title game and completed 64.7 percent of his passes this year while the Buckeyes boast 11 different receivers with a TD catch. Junior Parris Campbell (three TDs) led a balanced receiving corps with 587 yards, sophomore K.J. Hill tops (three TDs) the team with 55 receptions and junior Johnnie Dixon registered a team-best eight touchdown catches. Junior linebacker Jerome Baker leads the team with 67 tackles and sophomore lineman Nick Bosa has made an impact with seven sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss.

Sun Bowl Betting Preview and Odds: North Carolina State vs. Arizona State

North Carolina State Wolfpack vs. Arizona State Sun Devils (+7, 59.5)

Game to be played at Sun Bowl, El Paso, Texas

North Carolina State surprised some by challenging Clemson for the ACC Atlantic Division crown and has a shot at its first nine-win season since 2010. The Wolfpack finished No. 24 in the final College Football Playoff rankings and will cap their campaign by facing Arizona State in the Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, on Dec. 29. The Sun Devils averaged 40 points while winning three of their last four games to reach bowl eligibility and will wave goodbye to coach Todd Graham, who was fired at the end of the regular season but is staying on with his staff to coach the bowl game.

Herm Edwards is a big personality and a famous name in football coaching circles after his stints as head coach with the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, and he accepted an offer to succeed Graham with the Arizona State. "Athletes from all over the country, or whether it's here locally, should be coming back here," Edwards told reporters. "Guys in California and Los Angeles should be coming here. Why is this not the destination? Why can't it be? That's my job. That's my job to go into those homes, tell those parents this is the place you want to send your son." Edwards, who spent the last nine years as an analyst at ESPN, will not be on the sideline during the Sun Bowl but certainly will be a presence.

North Carolina State avoided the coaching carousel at the end of the regular season, fending off an effort by Tennessee to hire head coach Dave Doeren and signing him to a five-year extension. "Dave has made significant strides in developing a complete program at NC State, and this new contract continues our commitment to his leadership," athletic director Debbie Yow said in a statement. Doeren is guiding the Wolfpack to their fourth consecutive bowl appearance after reaching eight wins by beating rival North Carolina in the regular-season finale.

TV: 3 p.m. ET, CBS.

LINE HISTORY: North Carolina State opened as a 6-point favorite in this matchup and have been bet as high as -7, before settling down at the current number of NC State -6.5. The total hit the board at 59.5 and has yet to move off that number.

INJURY REPORT:

NC State - G T. Adams (Probable Friday, leg) WR S. Louis (Questionable Friday, ankle), DE B. Chubb (Questionable Friday, upper body).

Arizona State - DL G. Lea (Questionable Friday, upper body).

WEATHER REPORT: 66 to 68 degrees and clear - 3 to 4 mph winds throughout

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA STATE (8-4, 4-7-1 ATS, 4-8 O/U): Wolfpack senior defensive end Bradley Chubb took home the Bronko Nagurski Award as the nation's top defensive player after recording 10 sacks in 2017 and 25 in his career. Chubb anchors the defense while the offense is led by junior quarterback Ryan Finley, who threw for 3200 yards and 16 touchdowns and was at his best in the biggest games - averaging 373.3 yards and totaling six TD passes against Louisville, Clemson and South Carolina this season. Finley's biggest target is tight end Jaylen Samuels, who was named third-team All-American after hauling in a team-best 69 receptions and four TDs.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (7-5, 7-5 ATS, 5-7 O/U): Edwards is keeping most of the coaching staff, but defensive coordinator Phil Bennett elected to leave the program and will be coaching his last game after guiding a unit that allowed opposing offenses to score an average of 31.3 points in the regular season. The Sun Devils made up for some of the defensive struggles on the other side of the ball as dual-threat quarterback Manny Wilkins passed for 2,918 yards and 17 scores while rushing for 269 yards and six TDs. Arizona State averaged 180.3 yards on the ground and totaled 26 rushing TDs, led by senior Demario Richard (977 yards, 12 TDs).

Music City Bowl betting preview and odds: Kentucky vs. Northwestern

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Northwestern Wildcats (-7.5, 51)

Game to be played at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

No. 20 Northwestern looks to win 10 games for the second time in three seasons when it takes on Kentucky in the Music City Bowl Dec. 29 in Nashville, Tenn. Northwestern has won seven consecutive games - its longest winning streak since the memorable Rose Bowl run in 1996 - and has a chance to cap off a successful campaign by posting back-to-back postseason victories for the first time in program history. Kentucky backed into a bowl game after dropping three of its last four contests, but has a chance to win eight games for the first time since 2007 and hand coach Mark Stoops some momentum on the recruiting trail.

Justin Jackson will be appearing in his final game after setting a slew of Northwestern rushing records during his stay in Evanston. Jackson became the first Big Ten player since Ron Dayne to rush for over 1,000 yards in four straight seasons after gaining 1,154 on the ground in 2017. Jackson ran for 144 yards and a touchdown in the 42-7 win against Illinois in the regular season finale to move past Montee Ball (5,140) for fourth place on the Big Ten's all-time rushing list and hopes to feast on a Kentucky defense, which surrendered an average of 363.5 yards on the ground over its final two games.

Kentucky has a dynamic running back of its own in sophomore sensation Benny Snell Jr. Snell has built upon a historic freshman campaign, which saw him break the school record for most rushing yards by a first-year player (1,091) by registering 18 touchdowns in 2017, including 12 over his final five games of the regular season. Snell racked up 1,318 rushing yards to become the first running back in Kentucky history to notch back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and hopes to lead the Wildcats to their first postseason win since a 25-19 victory against East Carolina in the 2008 Liberty Bowl.

TV: 4:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE HISTORY: Northwestern opened as a touchdown favorite and has nudged up a half point to 7.5. The total hasn't budged since opening at 51.

INJURY REPORT:

Kentucky - DE Denzil Ware (Disciplinary, Out), TE C.J. Conrad (Undisclosed, Out)

Northwestern - No new injuries.

WEATHER REPORT: 37 dropping to 30 degrees and partly cloudy during the game - negligible winds

ABOUT KENTUCKY (7-5 SU, 3-9 ATS, 6-6 O/U): Snell, who was named to the All-SEC second team, rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns in the disappointing 44-17 loss to Louisville on Nov. 25 to bring his career total to a school-record 31. "I'm going to keep giving it my all and I don't really care about that," Snell told reporters. "I like competition and I like it when another running back has good stats coming into the game against me." Wide receiver Lynn Bowden Jr. was named to the freshman All-SEC Team as a kick returner after averaging 23.1 yards per return.

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN (9-3 SU, 9-3 ATS, 5-5-2 O/U): Clayton Thorson threw for 140 yards and a score in the win over Illinois in the regular-season finale to equal the program record for most touchdown passes (44) held by Len Williams and Brett Basanez. Jackson posted his 26th career 100-yard rushing game in the victory against the Fighting Illini to move past the legendary LaDainian Tomlinson (5,263) into 11th place on the NCAA's all-time rushing list. Garrett Dickerson earned all-Big Ten honorable mention honors after catching a career-high 37 passes for 401 yards and four touchdowns in 2017.

CONSENSUS: Just over 60 percent of players are backing Northwestern to cover as a 7-point fave.

Arizona Bowl betting preview and odds: New Mexico State vs. Utah State

New Mexico State Aggies vs. Utah State Aggies (-4, 63)

Game to be played at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.

LINE HISTORY: New Mexico State opened as a 3.5-point favorite but the line flipped a couple days after opening to Utah State -4. The total opened at 61 and has moved up to 63.

INJURY REPORT:

New Mexico State - WR OJ Clark (Shoulder, Questionable)

Utah State - No new injuries

WEATHER REPORT: 77 dropping to 66 and clear for the game - 2 to 4 mph winds

ABOUT NEW MEXICO STATE (6-6 SU, 6-5-1 ATS 5-7 O/U): Led by senior quarterback Tyler Rogers, who passed for 3,825 yards, 26 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, New Mexico ranks fourth among all FBS programs in passing offense (352.6 yards) with Rogers also ranking sixth nationally in total offense (348.1 yards).

ABOUT UTAH STATE (6-6 SU, 6-6 ATS, 9-3 O/U): The Aggies won three of their final five games to become bowl-eligible but come in off a 38-35 loss at Air Force to finish tied for fourth with the Falcons in the Mountain Division behind league champion Boise State, Wyoming and Colorado State.

CONSENSUS: About 52 percent of players are backing New Mexico State to cover as a 4-point underdog.

Preview: Sabres at Devils
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The New Jersey Devils are the surprise leaders of the ultra-competitive Metropolitan Division with goaltender Cory Schneider leading the way as they wrap up a six-game homestand against the struggling Buffalo Sabres on Friday. New Jersey came out of the break with a 3-1 victory over Detroit on Wednesday for its season-high fifth straight win, with Schneider allowing 10 goals during that span and improving to 17-6-4.

"I felt like that's kind of been the story all season, right? Cory's got our back," Devils defenseman Steven Santini told the Newark Star-Ledger. "You look at Stanley Cup teams the last few years, everyone's got good goaltending. So obviously we try to play our best and teams will have pushes, and thankfully we have Cory ..." Buffalo coughed up the lead with 1:09 left in regulation Wednesday at the New York Islanders and lost 3-2 in overtime, falling to 1-3-2 in its last six games and 4-12-6 in its past 22 contests. The Sabres score the fewest goals in the NHL at 2.16 per game, and are the worst team in the Eastern Conference - ahead of only Arizona in the overall standings. New Jersey has won four straight and nine of the last 10 meetings, including 6-2 on Oct. 9 in the first encounter this season with Jesper Bratt and Marcus Johansson scoring two goals apiece.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG Buffalo, MSG Plus (New Jersey)

ABOUT THE SABRES (9-20-8): Evander Kane leads the club with 15 goals and 34 points, and is on pace to record career highs in each category as his trade value continues to increase. Jack Eichel (13 goals, 33 points this season) has five goals and nine points in his last five contests while Kyle Okposo has three of his six goals in the past nine games after scoring Wednesday against his old team. Zemgus Girgensons (three goals) has scored in back-to-back contests after snapping a 25-game drought.

ABOUT THE DEVILS (22-9-5): Taylor Hall has a team-most 36 points and shares the club lead in goals (12) with Brian Gibbons after recording four goals and five assists in his last eight games. Nico Hischier, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 draft, recorded the second two-goal game of his career Wednesday, and has seven goals and 16 assists overall. Gibbons, who has one goal in his last 13 games, is a team-best plus-13 but only a plus-1 in 12 December contests.

OVERTIME

1. New Jersey, which had the third-best penalty-killing unit entering Friday at 84.4 percent, hasn't allowed a power-play goal in four games (12 chances) and has extinguished 23 of its last 24 penalties over the past eight contests.

2. Buffalo is 0-for-12 on the power play in its past six games and converts at an NHL-worst 11.8 percent (tied with Columbus) after leading the league at 24.5 last season.

3. Devils D Will Butcher's 21 assists - 13 on the power play - are second-most among NHL rookies to New York Islanders C Mathew Barzal (23).

Preview: Blue Jackets at Senators
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The Ottawa Senators, who were one goal from making the Stanley Cup final last season, continue to fade farther from playoff position and it doesn’t get any easier when the Columbus Blue Jackets pay a visit Friday. The Senators have lost four in a row (0-3-1) and nine of the past 11 games (2-7-2) after dropping a 5-1 decision at Boston on Wednesday despite allowing only 23 shots.

“It’s just problems after problems that keep mounting up. We’re in a pretty tough situation right now,” Ottawa center Nate Thompson told reporters. “I don’t think there’s any grey areas here. I think it’s black and white. I think we have to play a certain way and do it throughout the whole game. We don’t have the luxury right now of taking minutes off during a game because when we do that, it ends up in our net.” While the Senators sit four points above the cellar in the Eastern Conference, Columbus is two points from first place in the Metropolitan Division. The Blue Jackets own points in four straight games (2-0-2), but coughed up a two-goal lead in the final six minutes and lost 5-4 in a shootout at Pittsburgh on Wednesday. “We played well enough to win (Wednesday),” Columbus coach John Tortorella told reporters. “But we did not make the final plays of the game.”

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Columbus), RDS, TSN5 (Ottawa)

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (22-13-3): Artemi Panarin scored twice Wednesday and boasts five points (three goals) in the last three games while rookie forward Pierre-Luc Dubois continues to produce with four points in his past four contests. Defenseman Seth Jones, who went 11 games without a point from Nov. 7-Dec. 1, owns three goals and three assists during a five-game point streak. Zach Werenski (undisclosed), who leads all NHL defensemen with 10 goals, has been skating and could return to the lineup soon after missing the last four contests.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (11-16-8): Ottawa was 10th in the league in goals against per game last season (2.56) and has dropped to 28th in 2017-18 through Wednesday at 3.26 after allowing 35 in its last nine losses. Right wing Mark Stone, who has a team-best 32 points, boasts seven assists in his last seven games but has not registered a goal in 12 contests while Mike Hoffman (24 points) has not scored in his past 11 outings. Defenseman Fredrik Claesson (two points, 31 games) was suspended two games for his illegal check to the head of Boston’s Noel Acciari on Wednesday.

OVERTIME

1. Ottawa G Mike Condon (2-4-4, .909 save percentage), who has lost four straight, is expected to be in net Friday.

2. Columbus G Sergei Bobrovsky, who is 5-4-1 all-time versus the Senators, needs one victory to reach 200 in his career.

3. The Blue Jackets defeated Ottawa 5-2 at home Nov. 24, scoring three unanswered goals in the third period.

Preview: Rangers at Red Wings
Gracenote
Dec 29, 2017

With ice-cold temperatures expected for the upcoming Winter Classic, the New York Rangers have been heating up by collecting at least a point in five of their last six games (4-1-1) heading into Friday's tilt against the host Detroit Red Wings. The Rangers have had their way with the Red Wings, against whom they have a 10-2-2 mark in the last 14 encounters.

Mats Zuccarello scored in overtime of a 2-1 triumph versus Detroit on Nov. 24, giving him five points (one goal, four assists) in his last five games against the Red Wings. The 30-year-old Norwegian also joined Mika Zibanejad by converting in the shootout in a 1-0 win over Washington on Wednesday, although the latter has been held off the scoresheet in all four contests since returning from a concussion. Detroit has larger issues at hand, namely its sputtering offense that has mustered five goals during its three-game losing skid and a 3-8-5 mark in its last 16 contests overall. "We can't feel bad for ourselves. We can't dwell too long or else you are really going to find yourself out," Justin Abdeldaker said after netting his team's lone goal in a 3-1 loss to New Jersey on Wednesday.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG, FSN Detroit

ABOUT THE RANGERS (20-13-4): Forward Chris Kreider is sidelined indefinitely after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his right arm, the team announced Thursday. "The only thing that I know is, just before the first period he felt some swelling in his arm," coach Alain Vigneault told the New York Daily News on Thursday. "Docs checked him out, didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Then in between the first and second, it got to a point where this was out of the ordinary." Henrik Lundqvist's play versus Detroit could also be categorized as "out of the ordinary," considering the 2012 Vezina Trophy winner has posted a 7-1-1 mark with a 1.09 goals-against average and .963 save percentage in his last nine meetings.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (13-16-7): Tyler Bertuzzi was a bit incredulous when learning that he would be paired with captain Henrik Zetterberg and Gustav Nyquist on the team's top line. "If that's the case, obviously it's an honor playing with Zetterberg and then Gus is always on his line for a reason," the 22-year-old Bertuzzi said. "They have good chemistry and hopefully I can bring energy to the line." Zetterberg assisted on Tomas Tatar's power-play goal in the first meeting with New York, but the latter has registered a minus-4 while being kept off the scoresheet in each of his last three games.

OVERTIME

1. Nine of the last 10 games between the Original Six rivals have been decided by one goal.

2. Detroit has gone 0-for-7 on the power play after a 5-for-11 stretch in its previous four contests.

3. With his next victory, Vigneault (634) will snap a tie with Darryl Sutter for 11th place on the NHL's all-time coaches wins list.

Preview: Flyers at Lightning
Gracenote
Dec 29, 2017

The red-hot Tampa Bay Lightning go after their franchise record-tying ninth straight win on home ice and 11th in 12 games overall when they host the inconsistent Philadelphia Flyers on Friday. The Lightning pulled away in the third period for a 3-1 victory over Montreal on Thursday as captain Steven Stamkos registered his third multi-goal performance of the season with a pair.

Nikita Kucherov set up Stamkos’ first goal to extend his point streak to eight contests and leads the league with 52 points while Tyler Johnson is riding a 10-game streak during which he has scored five times and recorded 10 assists. The Lightning own a 16-2-1 record at Amalie Arena and begin a five-game road trip after taking on the Flyers, who dropped a 3-2 decision at Florida on Thursday for their third straight loss (0-2-1) following a stretch during which they won seven of eight. Captain Claude Giroux notched his ninth assist during a six-game point streak in Thursday’s setback, but the Flyers could not climb all the way back from a 3-0 deficit. Sean Couturier recorded his team-leading 17th tally in the loss for Philadelphia, which has managed just 14 goals in its last seven contests.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TVA, NBCSN Philadelphia, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE FLYERS (15-14-8): Jakub Voracek has been kept off the scoresheet in the last two games but leads the team with 36 assists and 44 points - one better than Giroux. Scott Laughton snapped his six-game goal-scoring drought with his sixth tally of the season on Thursday while defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, a Florida native, has notched six points in as many contests. Brian Elliott made his 12th straight start on Thursday, dropping to 7-4-1 in that span, which could give backup Michal Neuvirth (2-5-1) his first appearance since Nov. 28.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (27-7-2): Brayden Point scored his 15th goal on Thursday to draw within three of his total from his rookie season in 2016-17 and is tied for second on the team with Stamkos and Vladislav Namestnikov. Defenseman Victor Hedman also is making a major push for his first Norris Trophy of late with two goals, seven assists and a plus-13 rating over his last seven contests. Blue-liner Anton Stralman, who leads the league with a plus-24 rating, missed Thursday’s game with a lower-body injury and is considered day-to-day.

OVERTIME

1. Tampa Bay RW Cory Conacher has logged fewer than nine minutes of ice time in four of his last five games but posted an assist in two of those contests.

2. Philadelphia RW Wayne Simmonds (11 goals) has been kept off the scoresheet in seven of his last eight contests.

3. The Flyers are 4-2-1 in their last seven meetings with the Lightning but dropped two of the three matchups last season.

Preview: Penguins at Hurricanes
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The Pittsburgh Penguins are coming off a win that many of the players felt was their biggest of the season, but the afterglow of the come-from-behind victory did not last long. Goaltender Matt Murray will be among four players sidelined when Pittsburgh opens a three-game road trip at the resurgent Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night.

Star defenseman Kris Letang missed Wednesday's 5-4 shootout victory over Columbus, a game in which the Penguins erased a two-goal deficit on three occasions. The victory came at a cost as Murray, forward Bryan Rust and defenseman Chad Ruhwedel suffered injuries -- with the latter two expected to miss significant time. Carolina has turned things around since a four-game skid early in the month, winning three straight and six of seven to move into a tie with Pittsburgh for sixth place in the Metropolitan (with two games in hand). The Hurricanes have been unable to solve the Penguins, however, losing seven in a row and getting outscored 10-2 in their two home losses last season.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, AT&TSN-Pittsburgh, FSN Carolina

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (19-16-3): Murray (upper body), who missed the first six games this month due to a lower-body injury, is listed as day-to-day and has been ruled out Friday along with Letang, prompting the recall of defenseman Frank Corrado from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Rust was listed as longer-term and Ruhwedel is week-to-week, both with upper-body injuries. Tristan Jarry, who started all six games when Murray was hurt, is 5-2-2 with a 2.43 goals-against this season.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (17-12-7): After scoring in only one of the previous 14 games, second-year forward Sebastian Aho has three goals and consecutive multiple-point games in the last two. The turnaround for Carolina, though, has been sparked by veteran Cam Ward, who seemingly had been relegated to backup goalie status before winning five consecutive starts as part of a seven-game point streak (6-0-1) in December. He has started three in a row for the first time this season and surrendered four goals.

OVERTIME

1. Penguins F Evgeni Malkin has scored four goals in the past five games and also tallied in Wednesday's shootout.

2. The Hurricanes are 4-for-13 on the power play during the three-game winning streak.

3. Penguins F Phil Kessel had a goal and five points in four games versus Carolina last season.

Preview: Predators at Wild
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The Minnesota Wild emerged from the Christmas break to put together a strong performance and hope it works as a springboard when they host the Nashville Predators on Friday for the first of a home-and-home set. The Wild knocked off Dallas 4-2 on Wednesday to earn a point for the ninth time in their last 10 home contests (8-1-1) after dropping four of the previous five overall.

“I didn’t want to talk about it being a huge game, but it was a huge game,” Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters after Wednesday’s win. “We called it the start of the second half. You get a chance to reset.” The Wild woke up Thursday in playoff position in the tight Western Conference and plays eight of the next 11 at home while the Predators are on top of the Central Division after ending a three-game slide with a 2-1 victory at St. Louis on Wednesday. Nashville is 7-2-2 in December and allowed nine goals combined in the seven victories - two in the last four. Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne earned his 19th victory with 29 saves Wednesday and has won four straight on the road - yielding only two goals total - and is 15-10-4 lifetime versus Minnesota.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (22-9-5): Coach Peter Laviolette has been trying new combinations up front lately, including the all-Swede trio of Filip Forsberg (team-leading 34 points), Calle Jarnkrok (seven goals in December) and Pontus Aberg. “I know it’s not ideal slotting of the lines, but you go on the road and you don’t get the matchups,” Laviolette told reporters. “. … What it does is gives me a really good balance on the lines.” Forward Kevin Fiala has posted eight goals and 12 points in 11 December contests while defenseman P.K. Subban owns seven points (three goals) in the past seven games.

ABOUT THE WILD (19-15-3): Devan Dubnyk (lower-body) was the backup goalie during Wednesday’s victory and could return this weekend after missing six games, but Alex Stalock is 5-4-0 this month with a solid .923 save percentage in his place. Jason Zucker snapped a seven-game point drought with a goal and an assist in the win over Dallas and has 27 points overall - five behind team leader Eric Staal. While Minnesota has struggled on the power play with four conversions in 39 chances over the last 14 games, the Wild is 33-for-36 on the penalty kill in an eight-game span.

OVERTIME

1. Nashville RW Viktor Arvidsson and team-leader Forsberg (15) have each gone six games without a goal.

2. Minnesota D Ryan Suter, who leads the league in average ice time (27:13), has registered five points in his last five games.

3. The Wild earned a 6-4 victory over the Predators on Nov. 16 after winning three of five in the series last season.

Preview: Islanders at Jets
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The Winnipeg Jets have soared toward the top of the Western Conference standings thanks in part to the play of its four lines, but those combinations will be reshuffled entering Friday’s home contest against the New York Islanders. The Jets lost top-line center Mark Scheifele, second on the team with 38 points, to an upper-body injury in Wednesday’s 4-3 victory over Edmonton that will sideline him for six-to-eight weeks.

“We want to keep this thing afloat so that when Mark comes back, we’ll be even stronger for it,” Jets captain Blake Wheeler told reporters Thursday, as he slides to the middle of the top line. The Islanders knocked off Buffalo 3-2 in overtime Wednesday as center Mathew Barzal scored the game winner, his third consecutive game with a goal. Barzal has five goals in those three contests, including his first career hat trick in a 5-2 victory against the Jets last Saturday in Brooklyn. “We need to keep getting points, keep climbing the ladder,” Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak told the media after New York moved within three points of second place in the Metropolitan Division entering Thursday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, MSG Plus 2 (New York), TSN3 (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (20-13-4): Forward Josh Bailey extended his point streak to nine games with a game-tying goal upheld by video review with 1:09 left in regulation. Center John Tavares comes in on an eight-game point streak with three goals and eight assists in his past five contests. Halak made 38 saves in Saturday’s victory over the Jets and has won his last two starts.

ABOUT THE JETS (21-11-6): Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice moved forward Patrik Laine from the second line to the first line in Thursday’s practice, and shifted fourth-line forward Mathieu Perreault to the second line. Forward Joel Armia scored twice in Wednesday’s victory, while forward Nikolaj Ehlers extended his point streak to four games. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 22 saves in improving to 19-4-5 on the season.

OVERTIME

1. Tavares and Bailey started Thursday tied for second in the league in points (48), while Bailey led the NHL in assists (37) and Tavares sat fourth in goals (21).

2. Wheeler, who played center at times earlier in his career, ranked third in the NHL in assists (33) entering Thursday.

3. New York started Thursday tied with Tampa Bay for the most goals in the NHL (131), seven ahead of the third-place Jets.

Preview: Blues at Stars
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars stumbled out of the break with losses to Central rivals and face another big division game when they clash in the Lone Star State on Friday. St. Louis is tied with Winnipeg for second in the Central, one point behind Nashville after its 2-1 loss to the Predators on Wednesday while Dallas sits five points behind the Blues and is seventh in the Western Conference after Wednesday's 4-2 setback at Minnesota.

"We had a lot of momentum when we took the (three-day Christmas) break," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock told reporters. "Obviously with the show tonight, we've lost the momentum. So it's on us to get it back. … We were playing very good hockey. Whether this is a one-off or not, we'll see. But this was exactly the way we played earlier where you're just hoping to win." Dallas entered the break with two straight wins after going 2-4-2 on the heels of a season-best five-game winning streak. St. Louis has won five straight meetings, including 3-0 on Dec. 7 and 4-2 on Oct. 7 with Vladimir Tarasenko scoring in each game. Tarasenko, though, has only three of his 15 goals in his last 17 contests and hasn't scored in the last five games.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Southwest Plus (Dallas)

ABOUT THE BLUES (23-14-2): Brayden Schenn (team highs of 17 goals and 40 points) has only one goal and two assists in his last eight games. Schenn is struggling without linemate Jaden Schwartz (14 goals, 35 points) as are the Blues, who are 3-6-0 since Schwartz went down with an ankle injury. Paul Stastny (seven goals, 25 points) has only two assists in his last eight games and is minus-5 during that span, dropping his team-worst rating to minus-8.

ABOUT THE STARS (20-15-3): Tyler Seguin increased his team-high goal and point totals to 18 and 34 after scoring in each of the last three contests, recording four goals and an assist during that span. Jamie Benn (15 goals, 33 points) has continued his consistent play with four goals and five assists in his last nine games. Defenseman Marc Methot, who needs one assist for 100 in his career, was to return to practice Thursday and is expected to play Sunday against San Jose after missing 23 contests with a knee injury.

OVERTIME

1. St. Louis is 14-for-14 on the penalty kill over its last four games, 25-for-26 in its past eight and 41-for-43 in 14 December games.

2. Dallas kicks off a six-game homestand and plays 14 of its next 20 at American Airlines Center.

3. The Blues, who are 6-3-1 versus the Central, do not play in the division again until Jan. 25 versus Colorado.

Gracenote
Dec 29, 2017

The Toronto Maple Leafs attempt to make it three straight road victories when they continue their five-game trip Friday against the Colorado Avalanche. Toronto lost the opener of its trek in Columbus before edging the New York Rangers 3-2 on Saturday and trouncing Arizona 7-4 on Thursday.

Patrick Marleau scored two goals and set up another while William Nylander recorded a tally and an assist, giving him three of each during his four-game point streak. Colorado is continuing a season-high six-game homestand - and string of nine of 10 contests at Pepsi Center - after beginning it Wednesday with a 3-1 loss to the Coyotes. Mikko Rantanen scored the lone goal for the Avalanche and enters the matchup against Toronto with a seven-game point streak during which he has collected two tallies and six assists. Colorado has lost two of its last three at home and is 2-5-0 in its own building this month.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Ontario (Toronto), Altitude (Colorado)

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (23-14-1): Marleau's two-goal performance against Arizona was his first since the season opener at Winnipeg and matched the total from his previous 10 games. Mitch Marner recorded a goal and two assists on Thursday, giving him three tallies and six assists during his four-game point streak. Auston Matthews, who is two points shy of 100 in the NHL, scored his first goal in his second career game in his home state of Arizona and has tallied in each of his two contests since missing six with a concussion.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (17-16-3): With Tyson Barrie sidelined for 4-6 weeks due to a fractured hand, Colorado recalled fellow defenseman Andrei Mironov from San Antonio of the American Hockey League. The 23-year-old Mironov made his NHL debut earlier this season, recording a goal and two assists in nine contests. Nathan MacKinnon leads the team with 40 points but was kept off the scoresheet in back-to-back games against Arizona.

OVERTIME

1. The Avalanche have successfully killed 27 straight penalties over their last nine games.

2. Nylander's assist on Thursday was his 100th point in the NHL.

3. Colorado C Colin Wilson is two goals shy of 100 for his career.

Preview: Blackhawks at Oilers
Gracenote
Dec 29, 2017

The Chicago Blackhawks continue their quest for a victory on their six-game road trip when they visit the Edmonton Oilers on Friday. Chicago has been outscored 13-3 while losing each of the first three contests on the trek, including Thursday's 5-2 setback in Vancouver.

The loss continued a roller-coaster stretch for the Blackhawks, who lost five straight from Nov. 28-Dec. 6 but followed with a five-game winning streak before their current slide. Edmonton is looking to extend its home winning streak to four contests as it begins a four-game stretch at Rogers Place. The Oilers had their string of four overall victories halted last time out as they dropped a 4-3 decision at Winnipeg on Wednesday. Leon Draisaitl ended his eight-game goal-scoring drought and added an assist in the defeat, giving him nine points during his five-game streak.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCSN Chicago, Sportsnet One, Sportsnet East, Sportsnet Pacific (Edmonton)

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (17-14-5): Chicago could be without Artem Anisimov, who exited Thursday's setback in the first period with an undisclosed injury. The 29-year-old Russian has recorded just one point over his last five games and is three shy of 300 for his career. Anton Forsberg could make his second start in two nights as the Blackhawks are without Corey Crawford for at least a week due to an upper-body injury.

ABOUT THE OILERS (17-18-2): Connor McDavid posted his second straight two-point performance Wednesday with a pair of assists and has collected five of his team-leading 45 points over his last three contests. The 20-year-old captain is tied with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for first on the club with 14 goals and needs seven points to reach 200 for his career. Defenseman Oscar Klefbom is expected to return on Friday after missing three games with a shoulder injury.

OVERTIME

1. Oilers LW Patrick Maroon is one goal away from reaching double digits for the third straight season and the fourth time in his career.

2. Chicago F David Kampf made his NHL debut on Thursday, registering one shot and a minus-1 rating while winning 6-of-11 faceoffs in 13 minutes, 45 seconds of ice time.

3. Edmonton signed 20-year-old F Cameron Hebig, who has recorded 28 goals and 51 points in 34 games with Saskatoon of the Western Hockey League this season.

Preview: Flames at Ducks
Gracenote
Dec 29, 2017

The Anaheim Ducks hope to rebound from a disappointing effort last time out when they attempt to start another long home winning streak against the Calgary Flames on Friday. The Ducks, who lost for the first time in 26 home games against Calgary on Oct. 9, managed just 13 shots over the final two periods of Wednesday’s 4-1 loss to visiting Vegas.

“We got away from the things that have made us successful,” Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle told reporters after the setback. “We started to turn the puck over and we got spread out. … They frustrated us. We couldn’t really execute and found ways to self-destruct.” The Ducks have moved much closer to full health after Ryan Kesler made his return on Wednesday, and the former Selke Trophy winner will be important against the Flames, who possess a dangerous offense that is due to wake up. Calgary earned a point for the third time in four games Thursday in a 3-2 shootout loss at San Jose. Flames leading scorer Johnny Gaudreau has cooled off of late but has posted 14 points in 15 career contests against Anaheim.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Calgary), FSN West (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE FLAMES (18-15-4): Gaudreau has recorded just two points in his last five games but leads the team with 41, while Sean Monahan is next with 32 despite going eight contests without a goal and notching just two assists in that span. Mikael Backlund scored his eighth goal on Thursday and is tied with Matthew Tkachuk for third on the team with 22 points. Calgary has scored a power-play goal in three of its last four games but is just 5-for-48 with the man advantage over its last 14 contests.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (16-14-8): Kesler recorded three shots and a minus-3 rating in 16 minutes, 27 seconds of ice time in Wednesday’s loss after missing the team's first 37 contests with a hip injury. Second-leading scorer Corey Perry (22 points), who has been out since Dec. 11 with a knee injury, is the only key player unavailable for Anaheim after it was hampered by various ailments to its top players. Rickard Rakell has scored in three consecutive games to lead the team with 11 goals and 25 points while captain Ryan Getzlaf has collected nine points in eight contests after missing 19 due to injury.

OVERTIME

1. Calgary RW Jaromir Jagr tied Ron Francis for third place on the all-time list by playing in his 1,731st game on Thursday.

2. Anaheim D Brandon Montour has notched an assist in three straight games and is third on the team with 19 points.

3. The Flames also snapped a seven-game overall losing streak against the Ducks with their win in October.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Maple Leafs headed to Las Vegas for NYE

The Senators are trying desperately to figure out what has gone wrong this season, a Saturday showdown for the top of the Metropolitan division, and the Maple Leafs get set to take on the Knights on New Year's Eve in Sin City.

Senators Seeking a Solution

The Ottawa Senators have all but played their way out of playoff contention - at least in oddsmakers' eyes - as they prepare for a pair of home games before the calendar flips to 2018. Ottawa's 5-1 thumping at the hands of the Boston Bruins on Wednesday has the team sitting second-last in the Eastern Conference, just four points clear of the Buffalo Sabres. They're a whopping +7,500 on Bet365 to win the division, and have seen their Stanley Cup odds slip to a miraculous +10,000. They'll host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday before closing out 2017 against the Bruins the following night.

Metropolitan Showdown

The Metropolitan Division remains the most competitive in the league - which makes Saturday's showdown between the New Jersey Devils and the host Washington Capitals the top game on the schedule. The Devils own a two-point lead over the Capitals atop the division by virtue of a five-game winning streak entering Thursday. The Capitals previously held the division lead but have dropped three in a row heading into Thursday's play. Washington has a significant upper hand in the recent head-to-head series, having won the last four meetings while outscoring the Devils by a 17-6 margin over that stretch.

Happy New Year!

Imagine being the opposing team that has to deal with playing a New Year's Eve game in Las Vegas. The Toronto Maple Leafs are the lucky winners this season as they'll face the red-hot Golden Knights in a Sunday matinee at T-Mobile Arena. In addition to having to navigate through the crowds of people on Las Vegas Boulevard, the Maple Leafs will also be up against a Golden Knights team that has just two regulation losses through its first 18 home games. Vegas suddenly finds itself with the seventh-best championship odds (+1,500) - though the Maple Leafs are one of the six teams presently ahead of them (+1,000).

Injury Updates

* The Chicago Blackhawks head through Western Canada without starting netminder Corey Crawford, who has been placed on IR with an upper-body injury. It's a major blow for the Blackhawks, who are 16-9-2 SU and 10-15-3 O/U in his 28 starts.

* The Columbus Blue Jackets have had to do without the services of defenseman Zach Werenski, who has missed the last four games with an undisclosed ailment. But Columbus hasn't suffered in his absence, going 2-0-2 in that stretch.

* Jay Bouwmeester is back skating, but there is no timetable for the St. Louis Blues defenseman's return. The Blues are 2-6-0 since Bouwmeester went down - though that has more to do with having scored a paltry 10 goals over that span.

Player News

* Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin is heating up with four goals in his last five games, and had three points in Wednesday's 5-4 shootout win over Columbus. The Penguins are 6-0-1 SU and 5-1-1 O/U when Malkin records a multi-point game.

* The Islanders forward tandem of John Tavares and Josh Bailey continues to take the league by storm, sharing the December scoring lead with 20 points each. it's no surprise, then, that New York has been one of the month's best over plays at 10-3 O/U.

* Dallas Stars defenseman John Klingberg will likely go into the new year as the top-scoring blue-liner in the league; he currently has a four-point edge over three others. His offense has helped the Stars build a 21-16-1 O/U record entering Thursday's play.

Stanley Cup Futures

* The Bruins have undergone an incredible turnaround, and find themselves among the Stanley Cup favorites heading into 2018. Boston enters Thursday at +1,300 on Sports Interaction (http://www.cappersmall.com/forums/redirect-to/?redirect=http%3A%2F%2Faffiliate.sportsinteraction .com%2Fprocessing%2Fclickthrgh.asp%3Fbtag%3Da_4851 b_701%26aid%3D) to win the NHL championship, the fourth-best odds in the league.

* The Islanders have seen their odds of claiming their first NHL championship since 1983 climb to +1,600 as of Thursday. The Isles boast the NHL's No. 2 offense at 3.5 goals per game, but are allowing 3.5 goals per contest to rank last in the league.

Over/Under Trends

* The Blues are the hottest under play in the league at the moment, going below the total in nine consecutive games heading into a Friday night encounter with the Dallas Stars. St. Louis is now 15-24-0 O/U for the season.

* The Tampa Bay Lightning have emerged as a strong over option thanks to a league-best 4.20 goals per game this month. The Lightning have exceeded the total in seven of their 10 December contests going into Thursday's showdown with Montreal.

Preview: Rockets at Wizards
Gracenote
Dec 29, 2017

The Houston Rockets dropped just four of their first 29 games but suddenly are losers of four straight contests entering Friday's meeting with the host Washington Wizards. Houston allowed a 26-point, third-quarter lead get away against Boston on Thursday and dropped a 99-98 decision.

Point guard Chris Paul (groin) could miss his fourth straight game, and the Rockets are 15-1 when he has played this season and 10-7 when he sits out. Star guard James Harden recorded 34 points and 10 assists in the loss to Boston but was called for two offensive fouls in the final 7.3 seconds. "It doesn't really matter," Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters of the charge calls. "I'm worried more about the 24 points (the 62-38 halftime lead) we gave up, that's what I worry about." Washington repeatedly has played down to the competition this season, and it was never more evident than on Wednesday as NBA-worst Atlanta controlled play and handed the Wizards a 113-99 defeat.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (25-8): Harden blistered the officiating after Thursday's loss as only two referees were on the floor after Mark Lindsay suffered a back injury during pregame warmups. "Well, first of all, I'm wondering how do you only have two officials on a national TV game? That's the first question," Harden told reporters. "A lot of grabbing, a lot of holding. I mean, how else am I supposed to get open? Gotta ask with two arms wrapped around my whole body." The 98-point effort ended Houston's streak of 25 straight games with 100 or more points and marked just the third time it failed to reach the century mark this season.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (19-16): Four-time All-Star point guard John Wall was miffed over the loss to the Hawks and inferred some of his teammates are more worried about accumulating stats than posting victories. Bradley Beal also spoke up and stated there is too much selfishness on both ends of the floor. "Sometimes even myself included," Beal told reporters. "Sometimes we do one-pass shots, no-pass shots. Two or three passes on one side of the floor versus moving on both sides of the floor. Teams are going to load up on me and John. That's something that we should know by now. We got to do a better job of creating, putting the ball on the floor and moving it."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Rockets have won each of their last four visits to Washington.

2. Wizards PF Markieff Morris is averaging 16 points on 17-of-27 shooting over his last three games.

3. Houston signed veteran swingman Gerald Green on Thursday and he was scoreless in 11 minutes against the Celtics.

PREDICTION: Rockets 116, Wizards 112

Preview: Hawks at Raptors
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The Toronto Raptors have been rampaging through December by winning 10 games in 11 attempts, but back-to-back defeats have them looking to get back on track in Friday’s home contest against the Atlanta Hawks. Toronto fell 124-107 on Wednesday at Oklahoma City, falling flat offensively one night after a 98-93 defeat at Dallas in losing consecutive games for just the third time this season.

“We didn’t earn either game,” Toronto coach Dwane Casey told the media after Wednesday’s defeat. “We didn’t earn (Tuesday) night the way we played and we didn’t earn the game (Wednesday) in the stretches we played bad.” Even rarer than the Raptors losing back-to-back games is Atlanta winning consecutive contests, which the Hawks accomplished for the first time this season with Wednesday’s 113-99 home triumph over Washington. “Everybody was just locked in for 48 minutes,” Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder told reporters after Wednesday’s victory, just the ninth of the season for Atlanta. The Hawks finished a season sweep of Dallas with Saturday’s 112-107 victory, after losing six of their previous seven.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), TSN2 (Toronto)

ABOUT THE HAWKS (9-25): Schroder leads seven players averaging in double figures scoring at 19.9 points per game, and has combined for 54 points on 20-of-37 shooting from the field in Atlanta’s past two victories. Ersan Ilyasova scored 20 points Wednesday and Marco Belinelli added 19 points, combining to shoot 5-of-10 from 3-point range. The Hawks entered Thursday tied for sixth in the NBA in 3-point shooting (38 percent).

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (23-10): Guard DeMar DeRozan leads the Raptors in scoring at 24.1 points per game (12th in the NBA), but is 7-for-32 from the field in scoring a combined 23 points in the past two games. Forward C.J. Miles scored a team-high 20 points against Oklahoma City, hitting 6-of-12 3-point attempts. The Raptors are 12-1 at home and have won their past 10 games at Air Canada Centre.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Atlanta rookie F John Collins is fourth in the NBA in field-goal percentage, shooting 61.7 percent.

2. Toronto C Lucas Nogueira played Wednesday after missing 12 games with a right calf injury.

3. The Raptors blasted the Hawks 112-78 in Atlanta on Nov. 25 in their first meeting of the season.

Preview: Nets at Heat
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The Miami Heat have taken advantage of a favorable stretch in the schedule to crawl back above .500. The Heat will try to stay hot when they host another team well below .500 in the finale of a four-game homestand Friday against the Brooklyn Nets.

Miami is 7-3 during a span in which it has played six teams that entered Thursday at least 10 games below .500, including the Nets in Mexico City on Dec. 9 and the slumping Orlando Magic, whom the Heat toppled 107-89 on Tuesday. "We were getting good looks all night," guard Wayne Ellington told reporters after Miami scored 64 points after halftime in the win. "The first half they didn't really fall for us, but we stayed patient." Brooklyn dropped the first three legs of a five-game road trip and seven of eight overall after a 128-113 setback at New Orleans on Wednesday. Reserve guards Caris LeVert and Nik Stauskas combined for 43 points while the Nets' starters totaled just 33 on 12-of-29 shooting.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), FSN Sun (Miami)

ABOUT THE NETS (12-22): Quincy Acy scored 18 points off the bench in Wednesday's loss and combined with LeVert and Stauskas to make 14-of-21 3-pointers, with Stauskas matching a franchise record for a bench player with his seven triples. "I just felt like that second group was giving us the best chance," coach Kenny Atkinson told reporters after riding the bench down the stretch. "I didn't feel it from our first group. I felt like the second group was playing with energy and sharing the ball and competing. They still couldn't get the stops we needed, but I said, 'We're going to stick with them.' They earned that right." Atkinson hinted he might adjust the starting lineup but any changes likely won't involve swingman Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who is averaging 16.2 points and 8.4 rebounds over his last five games.

ABOUT THE HEAT (18-16): Center Hassan Whiteside returned from an 11-game absence due to a knee injury in the win over Orlando, producing seven points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes. "I don't expect somebody to miss that many games and come right back in and everybody have terrific rhythm, including him," coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters. "There's going to be a little bit of a process." Whiteside missed the win over the Nets in Mexico City and was limited to averages of nine points and 6.3 rebounds in three meetings last season, well below his season marks of 17 points and 14.1 boards.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Heat SF Josh Richardson is averaging 21.5 points over his last six games.

2. LeVert is 12-for-19 from 3-point range over a five-game span and Stauskas is 19-for-33 in six contests since joining Brooklyn.

3. Miami has won six straight meetings.

Preview: Pacers at Bulls
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The last time the Chicago Bulls faced Central Division rival Indiana, they fell apart down the stretch while suffering their 10th straight loss and watching their NBA-worst record drop to 3-20. The Bulls' season changed dramatically days later and they are one of the league's hottest teams entering a rematch with the Pacers at home Friday night.

Chicago is 9-2 since forward Nikola Mirotic returned from facial fractures one game after the loss in Indiana after it rallied for a 92-87 victory over the New York Knicks on Wednesday. Mirotic had just four points - a season low - but a balanced attack and a dominant defensive stretch run gave the Bulls an 11-10 record against Eastern Conference opponents. "There are gonna be games that are ugly, but it all comes down to stops," guard Kris Dunn told reporters. "We take pride in our defensive stops. I think we're very resilient." The Pacers had a very different late-game experience in their loss 98-94 home loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, getting outscored 14-4 in the final four-plus minutes. Leading scorer Victor Oladipo missed the contest due to a knee injury and he has already been ruled out for this one.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Indiana, WGN-TV (Chicago)

ABOUT THE PACERS (19-16): Veteran Lance Stephenson picked up the start in place of Oladipo on Wednesday and responded with 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. "We were right there. I'm not going to say it was because (Oladipo) was out. We were right there," Stephenson told reporters. "We made mistakes and a lot of our guys were confident and trying to win the game. We just have to watch film and see what we did wrong and learn from our mistakes." Indiana attempted just 10 free throws - making eight of them - and it entered Thursday ranked 24th in the NBA with 19.7 attempts at the line per game.

ABOUT THE BULLS (12-22): Mirotic was not a big factor on the scoreboard against the Knicks but he did acknowledge that he and forward Bobby Portis - whose punch in a preseason practice led to Mirotic's facial fractures - have handled the controversy well, which has had a massive impact on the team's ability to move on. "I think it was huge because people didn't know how we were going to act because it was a tough moment obviously for all of us, especially for me," Mirotic told the media. "But I think [up to now] we've handled it well. We've tried to be professional. That was really important for the guys because we kind of tried to stick together. And being back was a great [thing] for me, for my teammates." Dunn shot 6-for-18 on Wednesday but led the Bulls with 17 points and is averaging 14.6 and 7.8 assists in December.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Dunn is averaging 17 points on 57.1 percent shooting in two meetings with the Pacers this season.

2. Pacers PG Darren Collison has 26 assists and only two turnovers in 172 minutes over a six-game stretch.

3. Chicago PF Lauri Markkanen is 6-for-22 from the floor over the last two games.

Preview: Mavericks at Pelicans
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The New Orleans Pelicans will go as far as Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins can take them, but Rajon Rondo is capable of pushing the two big men to even greater heights. Rondo will try to follow up a historic performance and lead the Pelicans to a fourth consecutive win when they host the Dallas Mavericks on Friday.

Rondo became the seventh player in NBA history, the first since 1996 and the first in franchise history to hand out 25 assists in a game when he hit that mark in a 128-113 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday. "The number one thing is we got the win," Rondo told reporters. "And then me personally, I love passing the ball. When everyone touches the ball, it gives you energy and life on defense. That's what I'm a big believer in, giving everyone touches and energy on both ends of the floor." The Mavericks still own the worst record in the Western Conference but just finished holding a pair of high-powered offenses in check in wins over Toronto and Indiana. Wednesday's 98-94 triumph at the Pacers snapped an eight-game road losing streak for Dallas, which finishes up the three-game trip at Oklahoma City on Sunday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Dallas), FS New Orleans

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (11-25): Toronto averages 110.6 points but was held to 93 by Dallas on Tuesday before Indiana, which averages 107.5 points, was held under 95 on Wednesday. “We stuck with it,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle told reporters after beating Indiana. “You know, they’re a great offensive team, and they were making shots early in the game. We just felt like if we picked up our intensity a little bit, we could contest a little better and make it tough on them.” Offensively, 39-year-old forward Dirk Nowitzki showed little wear on the back-to-back and scored a combined 33 points on 15-of-23 shooting in the two wins.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (18-16): Jrue Holiday served as the point guard for New Orleans until moving off the ball when Rondo joined the team, and he is thriving in his new role. Holiday scored 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting in Wednesday's win and is averaging 22.2 points on 52.5 percent shooting in December. "If you see an open lane to cut, he'll get (the ball) there," Holiday told the team's website of Rondo. "I don't know how he does, but he'll get it there. When he's on the court, everybody has this type of energy, where you want to play and get out in the lanes, cut, set flare screens and see everyone succeed, because that's the type of guy he is. Playing with him has been really fun."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Davis totaled 10 blocked shots in the last two games.

2. Mavericks SG Wesley Matthews is 2-of-16 from 3-point range over the last three games.

3. New Orleans earned a 99-94 win at Dallas on Nov. 3 behind 20 points and 22 rebounds from Cousins.

Preview: Bucks at Thunder
Gracenote
Dec 29, 2017

The Oklahoma City Thunder attempt to stretch their season-best winning streak to seven games when they host the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday. The Thunder opened a four-game homestand with impressive victories over Houston and Toronto to improve to a stellar 14-4 at home.

Oklahoma City was a porous 8-12 when November ended as the trio of point guard Russell Westbrook and forwards Paul George and Carmelo Anthony had trouble meshing. That no longer is an issue with the Thunder sitting at 12-3 this month and now owning the fifth-best record in the Western Conference. Milwaukee was sliding in the wrong direction with five defeats in seven games before recovering from a 20-point deficit to produce a solid 102-96 victory over Minnesota on Thursday. The Bucks outscored the Timberwolves 27-12 during the fourth quarter in a resounding finish.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Oklahoma

ABOUT THE BUCKS (18-15): Milwaukee was getting jeered loudly by the home fans, and even coach Jason Kidd wasn't feeling so good before the team reversed course and posted its largest comeback victory of the season. "Sometimes you feel you're on the brink of being embarrassed," Kidd told reporters. "So you tend to turn it up. The guys stayed together. The best part of the night was, they kept talking to each other." Small forward Giannis Antetokounmpo contributed 22 points and 10 rebounds, giving him 20 or more points in each off his last 23 appearances, while guard Eric Bledsoe scored 26 for his fourth 20-point effort in five games.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (20-15): Oklahoma City's "Big Three" combined for 81 points in the 124-107 victory over Toronto - the largest total of their 35 games together. George made seven 3-pointers while scoring 33 points, Westbrook contributed 30 and 13 assists and Anthony scored 18 as he continues to accept his role as the team's third scoring option. "The pieces to the puzzle is coming together. Everybody is doing their job. Everybody is playing their part," Anthony told reporters. "Now it's just a mindset of just going out there, winning, playing basketball, not worrying about anything else, focusing on doing your job and helping others and trying to win the game."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Thunder have won five of the last six meetings, including a 110-91 victory in Milwaukee on Oct. 31.

2. Oklahoma City C Steven Adams scored 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting against Toronto and has reached double digits in 12 of his last 13 games.

3. Milwaukee PF/C John Henson was 7-of-7 shooting against Minnesota and is 26-for-36 over his last five contests.

Preview: Suns at Kings
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The Sacramento Kings are getting better results of late, and they continue to lean on their veterans in doing so. The Kings will try to build off perhaps their best victory of the season when they host the Phoenix Suns on Friday in the second of six straight home games.

Behind 24 points from 40-year-old Vince Carter, Sacramento rolled to a 109-95 triumph over Eastern Conference heavyweight Cleveland on Wednesday, improving to 9-11 since its 3-11 start. "The shot was falling tonight but it was our ball movement, and the ball found the open guy," Carter told reporters. "It just made it fun to watch. If we play that way we could be a pretty good basketball team." The Suns have made strides as well and welcomed back leading scorer Devin Booker for Tuesday's 99-97 win over the Memphis Grizzlies at home. Booker had 20 of his 32 points in the first half and Tyson Chandler's alley-oop slam in the final second lifted Phoenix to its fourth win in the last six games.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, NBA TV, FSN Arizona (Phoenix), NBCSN California (Sacramento)

ABOUT THE SUNS (13-23): Chandler's dramatic finish grabbed most of the headlines, but Booker's seamless return from an adductor strain is the most important development in the desert. "This is better than Christmas for me," Booker told reporters. "Getting a chance to be back out on the floor, playing with my brothers and coming out with a close win makes it that much better." The 21-year-old missed a seven-point loss at Sacramento earlier this month but produced 22 points, five assists and four rebounds in a 117-115 win over the Kings at home on Oct. 23.

ABOUT THE KINGS (12-22): While Booker is the go-to guy nearly every night for Phoenix, Sacramento still gets much of its production from its older players, and veterans Zach Randolph and George Hill teamed with Carter in Wednesday's win. Randolph (14 points) and Hill (10) were the only starters for the Kings to score in double figures and Randolph continues to lead the team in scoring (15.5) and rebounding (6.9). Those two combined for 35 points while Carter sat in the win over the Suns on Dec. 12.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Booker averages 27.9 points on 48.7 percent shooting on the road, compared to 21.8 on 42 percent at home.

2. Kings C Willie Cauley-Stein is averaging 18.7 points on 61.9 percent shooting and nine rebounds over the last three games.

3. The teams have split 78 all-time meetings in Sacramento.

Preview: Hornets at Warriors
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

Stephen Curry missed a date against his hometown Charlotte Hornets after suffering an ankle injury during a road trip earlier this month, and he won't quite be ready for the rematch. Curry is expected to miss his 11th consecutive game when the Golden State Warriors host the Hornets on Friday.

Curry took part in practice on Thursday and scrimmaged 3-on-3 away from the glare of the media after practice, but the team isn't ready to throw him back onto the floor quite yet. "I doubt he'll play tomorrow with a back-to-back," coach Steve Kerr told reporters. "I don't think it would make much sense, but I think he's probably going to want to. But it's more likely he plays Saturday. If all goes well, I expect him to play Saturday, but even if it goes well, I'm not expecting him to play tomorrow." The Hornets are losers of 13 of their last 17 games and missed out on a chance to earn back-to-back wins for the first time this month when they dropped a 102-91 decision at home to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday. Charlotte is beginning a four-game California swing with Friday's matchup and is just 2-12 on the road.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (12-22): Charlotte needed to overcome an 18-point deficit to earn a 111-106 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday and fell into a 16-point hole at the half against the Celtics. "I talked to the guys in the locker room after the game about waiting too long and waiting until we get down to actually start playing the way we know how to play," associate head coach Stephen Silas told reporters after Wednesday's loss. "I thought we did that tonight. We did that in the last game and we won it, but that's something we don't want to continue because that's not a good formula for consistent play." Point guard Kemba Walker is trying to carry the team and is averaging 25 points over the last three games.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (28-7): Golden State hasn't missed the two-time MVP Curry all that much while going 9-1 in his absence and is coming off a 126-101 win over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday in which it shot 59.3 percent from the floor and handed out 37 assists. "An ideal game," Kerr told reporters. "Everybody really played well and chipped in. A lot of guys got going." The Warriors' success without Curry is attributable in large part to the efforts of Kevin Durant, who is averaging 29 points, 8.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 3.1 blocks in the last 10 games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Warriors SG Patrick McCaw scored a season-high 18 points on Wednesday.

2. Hornets C Dwight Howard totaled 33 rebounds in the last two games.

3. Golden State took the last seven in the series, including a 101-87 win in Charlotte on Dec. 6.

Preview: Clippers at Lakers
Gracenote
Dec 28, 2017

The Los Angeles Clippers are putting together some wins, are in the early stages of a long stretch at home and they may soon get star forward Blake Griffin back from a knee injury. The rival Lakers are headed in a different direction going into a Friday night matchup between the in-city foes at the Staples Center.

The Lakers dropped their fourth straight game overall and their sixth in a row at home with a 109-99 setback against Memphis on Wednesday. Guard Lonzo Ball (shoulder) missed his second game in a row and fellow rookie Kyle Kuzma shot 4-for-24 from the floor as the Lakers fell to 3-12 since their 8-10 start. "I just didn't feel like we were making the extra pass consistently and Memphis did a really good job of being physical with us and they clogged up the paint," coach Luke Walton told reporters after the loss. The Clippers had a very different experience Tuesday at Staples Center, opening up a stretch of seven straight games in Los Angeles with a 122-95 rout of Sacramento.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Prime Ticket (Clippers), Spectrum SportsNet (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (14-19): Coach Doc Rivers said that Griffin has a chance to return Friday, well ahead of his original timetable from an MCL sprain. Guard Lou Williams has done much of the heavy lifting since Griffin went down in November and the veteran sharpshooter scored 21 points against the Kings. Williams is averaging 29.7 points while making 16-of-30 3-pointers over the last three games, and the 31-year-old went off for a season-high 42 points in a 120-115 win over the Lakers in the previous meeting Nov. 27, during which Griffin was hurt.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (11-22): While Kuzma struggled, the Lakers were given a boost in the return of forward Brandon Ingram, who scored 23 points against the Grizzlies after missing two games with a quad injury. "He's the best we have at putting pressure on the rim," Walton said of Ingram, who is averaging 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds at home this season. Jordan Clarkson has made two starts in place of Ball and he made a season-high five 3-pointers en route to 22 points in Wednesday's defeat.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Lakes C Andrew Bogut recorded four points and 12 fouls in 43 minutes over his last three games.

2. Clippers C DeAndre Jordan grabbed at least 15 rebounds in 10 of his last 11 outings.

3. The Clippers claimed five straight meetings.
