RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 10 PLAGIO 3/1

# 9 UNIONADO 2/1

# 7 KING DANIEL 5/2

My selection in this race is PLAGIO. Is a key contender - given the 51 Equibase Speed Fig from his most recent race. A solid 64 avg class rating may give this gelding a distinct class edge against this group of animals. With a formidable 57 average Equibase Speed Figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. UNIONADO - He has been travelling solidly recently while recording very strong Equibase speed figs. Will make a strong showing versus this field. KING DANIEL - Has raced admirably in dirt sprint races.

# 5 PURA LICA 6/1

# 12 GO BONNIE GO 12/1

# 10 KARA'S ANGEL 15/1

I give my vote to PURA LICA here. The odds may be just right on this one. Is tough not to examine given the company run in as of late. Prescott has a win percentage of 15 over the last 30 days. GO BONNIE GO - When a trainer brings any pony back this soon it is a positive signal. Looks like a reliable player for the exotics. KARA'S ANGEL - This filly is coming back in next to no time to race. She has earned competitive figs under today's conditions and should fare well versus this field.

Rating: 4

#5 FINAL BLESSING (ML=8/1)
#8 DISTINCTIVE RIDE (ML=3/2)

FINAL BLESSING - I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a return. Ranked numero uno in earnings per start. Another notice that this animal has the class to take this race. DISTINCTIVE RIDE - The jockey and trainer combination have a beneficial ROI when they team up. I like the hard fact that this colt's last speed rating, 61, is tops in this group.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SHOTMASTER (ML=4/1), #4 CHASING MY HALO (ML=6/1),

SHOTMASTER - I'd like to see better recent efforts with M/L odds of 4/1. Can't play this steed in today's sprint of 7 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a short distance event recently. Quite unimpressive speed figure last out at Parx Racing at 7 furlongs. Don't believe this racer will improve too much today. This closer should have a rough go of it to be along with the lack of pace in this race. CHASING MY HALO - In any event of 7 furlongs, I like to bet on a contender that has been on the board in sprint races recently.

#3 IM CHILLIN (ML=5/1)
#10 HELMET HEAD (IRE) (ML=3/2)

IM CHILLIN - Trainer Potts gave this gelding a good stiff work. Last one was 2nd fastest of the day. Earnings per race is something that I believe can be a very key selection factor. This thoroughbred is ranked the highest in this bunch. HELMET HEAD (IRE) - Looking at today's class figure, this horse is meeting an easier group than last race out at Monmouth Park. A definite class advantage goes to this horse. A pretty good sign he will be very competitive in this grass race. Don't throw this horse out due to his last race at Monmouth Park where he ended up seventh on the soft turf. Should improve this time around.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 SOPHISTICATION (ML=9/2), #2 SON OF SO (ML=6/1), #11 MOJO RISING (ML=6/1),

SOPHISTICATION - The speed figure last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this contest when I look at the class rating of today's event. Mark this racer as a questionable challenger. MOJO RISING - You always figure that this horse has a shot to be victorious, but he falters most every time.

Preview: Bruins at Senators
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

The Boston Bruins attempt to extend their point streak to eight games on Saturday as they visit the Atlantic Division-rival Ottawa Senators. Boston owns a 5-0-2 record over its last seven contests after falling 4-3 in a shootout at Washington on Thursday.

David Backes continued his surge in the setback for the Bruins, scoring a pair of goals for his third consecutive two-point performance. The 33-year-old right wing has collected three tallies and three assists during the run. Ottawa is coming off a 5-4 home triumph over Columbus on Friday in which it overcame a 3-1 deficit by scoring four consecutive goals. Mark Stone netted a tally and set up another as the Senators halted a four-game slide that included a 5-1 setback at Boston on Wednesday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), Sportsnet (Ottawa)

ABOUT THE BRUINS (20-10-6): Tuukka Rask has been a beast in the crease of late, going 9-0-1 with a 1.41 goals-against average and .946 save percentage in his last 10 starts. "I'm seeing the puck well, making saves," Rask told the team's website after Friday's practice. "As a team, we've played very good hockey, and as I've said before, that's very helpful for goalies. When they clear out the bodies in front of you and if there's any rebounds, they clear out the rebound as well. That's a big part of it." Coach Bruce Cassidy stated David Krejci (upper body) and defenseman Adam McQuaid (broken fibula) could return to the lineup Saturday after missing six games and 10 weeks, respectively.

ABOUT THE SENATORS (12-16-8): Mike Hoffman has been kept off the scoresheet in each of his last four contests and enters Saturday with a 12-game goal-scoring drought. The 28-year-old needs two points to reach 200 in the NHL. Stone's goal against the Blue Jackets was his first in 13 games but gave him nine points over his last eight contests.

OVERTIME

1. Senators D Fredrik Claesson will finish serving the two-game suspension he received for delivering a dangerous check against the Bruins on Wednesday.

2. Boston LW Brad Marchand's next assist will be the 200th of his career.

3. Ottawa F Alex Burrows has gone 15 games without an assist, keeping him one shy of 200 in the NHL.

Preview: Canadiens at Panthers
Gracenote
Dec 29, 2017

The Florida Panthers are on their longest winning streak of the season and can wrap up a perfect homestand when they host the sputtering Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night in their final game of 2017. The Panthers have won four in a row to leapfrog Montreal into fourth place in the Atlantic Division.

Florida has surrendered only six goals during its winning streak and Thursday's 3-2 win over Philadelphia was its third one-goal decision in that span. "We're playing way better defensively and we have better starts," forward Jonathan Huberdeau told reporters. "It's been good to come back lately and get some wins." Montreal has dropped three in a row to fall to 2-4-0 entering the final stop of its seven-game road trip. The Canadiens have managed only one goal in each of their last three defeats, but they have thrived offensively against the Panthers - winning the last four in the series by a combined 18-6 - including a 5-1 rout on Oct. 24.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CBC, TVA, CITY (Montreal), FSN Florida

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (16-18-4): Coach Claude Julien decided to split up his top-line pairing of Jonathan Drouin and captain Max Pacioretty on Thursday. Drouin, who set up two goals in the October meeting, has only one assist in his last eight games while Pacioretty is mired in an 11-game goal drought. "It’s not like we’re missing our chances - we’re not really getting chances, so that’s what’s getting a little frustrating,” Drouin told reporters after a 3-1 loss at Tampa Bay on Thursday.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (16-16-5): Jonathan Huberdeau offered a simple explanation for his goal-scoring tear - “I got my family here for a bit. Good food.” - after registering his fourth tally in three games to bump his season total to 13. James Reimer was lit up by Montreal for five goals two months ago, but has found a groove while making 10 consecutive starts in place of injured Roberto Luongo. Reimer owns a stellar .947 save percentage in his last six games.

OVERTIME

1. Reimer is 5-5-2 with two shutouts and a 2.97 goals-against average versus the Canadiens.

2. Montreal has allowed at least one power-play goal in five straight games.

3. Panthers F Nick Bjugstad has a goal and four assists his last five contests.

Preview: Devils at Capitals
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

The Washington Capitals attempt to finish with a perfect record at home this month when they host the Metropolitan Division-rival New Jersey Devils on Saturday. The Capitals have won each of their first seven contests at Capital One Arena in December, including Thursday's 4-3 shootout triumph over Boston.

Captain Alex Ovechkin ended a four-game drought by scoring his league high-tying 24th goal in regulation and netted the lone tally in the bonus format as Washington overcame 2-0 and 3-2 deficits after being shut out in each of its previous two contests. New Jersey nearly finished with a perfect mark on its six-game homestand but squandered a 3-1 lead on Friday and dropped a 4-3 overtime decision against Buffalo. Despite the disappointing ending, the Devils continued to earn points as they have gone 6-0-2 over their last eight overall games. Miles Wood scored his 10th goal, giving New Jersey five players with double-digit totals this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New Jersey), NBCSN Washington

ABOUT THE DEVILS (22-9-6): Marcus Johansson, who spent his first seven seasons in the NHL with Washington, scored on Friday to pull within two points of 300 for his career. Taylor Hall leads New Jersey with 36 points but was kept off the scoresheet by Buffalo after recording a goal and four assists over his previous three games. Travis Zajac, who has registered only two points - both goals - in 20 contests this season, is slated to appear in his 800th career game on Saturday.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (23-13-3): Evgeny Kuznetsov appeared in his 300th NHL contest on Thursday and celebrated by notching an assist. The 25-year-old Russian leads Washington with 39 points - one more than Ovechkin. Nicklas Backstrom has scored only seven goals this season and needs five more to reach 200 for his career.

OVERTIME

1. Capitals C Lars Eller recorded a goal and an assist against Boston, leaving him two points shy of 200 for his career.

2. New Jersey has gone 25-for-27 on the penalty kill over its last nine games.

3. The next victory for Washington's Barry Trotz will move him past Lindy Ruff (736) for fifth place on the all-time coaching list.

Preview: Hurricanes at Blues
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

The Carolina Hurricanes have been surging of late, and they look to extend their winning streak to five games when they visit the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. Carolina has captured seven of its last eight contests, including Friday's 2-1 home triumph over Pittsburgh.

The Hurricanes fell behind before Derek Ryan and Sebastian Aho scored second-period goals to lead the team to its sixth straight win at PNC Arena. While Carolina has been on the rise, St. Louis has been trending in the opposite direction - losing seven of its last nine contests. The Blues scored twice in a 65-second span early in the third period Friday to take the lead but went on to drop a 4-2 decision in Dallas. Vladimir Tarasenko netted his 16th tally in the loss, ending his five-game drought and pulling within one of Brayden Schenn for the team lead.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Carolinas, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (18-12-7): Aho is wielding a hot stick these days as he has scored four goals during a three-game streak. The 20-year-old Finn is one tally behind Jeff Skinner (12) for the team lead and one point back of Teuvo Teravainen (29) for first on the club. Scott Darling likely will be in the crease Saturday for what will be his 100th game in the NHL.

ABOUT THE BLUES (23-15-2): Schenn leads St. Louis in both goals (17) and points (40) but has been kept off the scoresheet in each of his last three contests. The team could be without Jake Allen on Saturday as he collided with a teammate and was pulled from the game against Dallas under NHL concussion protocol. The 27-year-old Allen returned after a 10-minute absence, prompting coach Mike Yeo to tell reporters, "That was a bad decision by me. I think I put Jake and the team in a bad position there."

OVERTIME

1. Hurricanes recalled F Lucas Wallmark from Charlotte of the American Hockey League on Friday, but the 22-year-old Swede was a healthy scratch.

2. St. Louis D Colton Parayko skated in his 200th career game on Friday.

3. Carolina backup G Cam Ward has won six straight decisions to pull into a tie with Billy Smith (305) for 27th place on the all-time wins list.

Preview: Wild at Predators
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

The Minnesota Wild have been sharp in two games since the holiday break and vie for a third straight victory over a Central Division opponent when they visit the Nashville Predators on Saturday. The Wild knocked off visiting Dallas 4-2 on Wednesday before outlasting Nashville at home by the same score on Friday in the opener of the back-to-back set.

Mikael Granlund recorded his second career hat trick on Friday as Minnesota welcomed the return of Devan Dubnyk, who made 41 saves in a dazzling effort after missing the previous six contests with a lower-body injury. While the Wild are beginning to turn things around, the Predators have hit a speed bump with just one victory in their last five games (1-3-1) after earning at least one point in seven straight contests to start the month (6-0-1). Nashville dropped out of first place in the Central after Winnipeg’s victory over the New York Islanders on Friday and could be without leading scorer Filip Forsberg (34 points) against the Wild after the forward left the last game with an undisclosed ailment. Defenseman P.K. Subban has raised his production level with nine points in his last eight games after notching a goal and an assist in Friday’s setback.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), FSN Tennessee (Nashville)

ABOUT THE WILD (20-15-3): Granlund has led the way over the last two games with four goals and an assist to push his season total to 27 points, which ties him for second on the team with Jason Zucker. “He was making plays,” coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters of Granlund. “(The puck) was like a yo-yo on his stick tonight. When he gets like that, he’s as good as there is.” Eric Staal notched an assist in Friday’s victory and tops the Wild with 33 points while defenseman Ryan Suter also set up a goal and has registered six points in his last six games.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (22-10-5): Kyle Turris scored one of the club's two goals in Friday’s loss, giving him 18 points in 22 games since being acquired from Ottawa in a three-team trade. Forsberg tops the team with 15 goals but has not recorded one in the last seven games and Subban moved into second place on the Predators with 27 points - one more than forward Kevin Fiala. Pekka Rinne made 34 saves in Friday’s loss, dropping to 19-7-3 this season, and could sit out on the second night of the back-to-back set in favor of Juuse Saros (3-3-2, .918 save percentage).

OVERTIME

1. Nashville RW Viktor Arvidsson has gone seven games without a goal after recording eight in his previous 19 contests.

2. Minnesota LW Zach Parise played with Iowa of the American Hockey League on a conditioning stint Thursday, recording an assist, and could make his 2017-18 debut soon.

3. The Wild has won five of the last seven meetings, including both matchups this season while totaling 10 goals.

Preview: Kings at Canucks
Gracenote
Dec 29, 2017

The Los Angeles Kings will attempt to rebound after dropping a showdown for supremacy in the Pacific Division when they open a three-game Western Canada swing at the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. Los Angeles has stumbled of late with losses in five of its last seven games (2-3-2), including four of five on the road.

The Kings had a chance to move back into first place in the division but came up on the short end of a 3-2 overtime decision to expansion Vegas on Thursday night. "We were lucky to get one point," said defenseman Drew Doughty after Los Angeles was outshot 39-28 on its home ice. "In some ways, I don't even think we deserved a point." Vancouver halted a four-game slide and won for only the second time in 10 games (2-7-1) as its newly configured top line amassed 12 points in a 5-2 trouncing of Chicago on Thursday. The Canucks rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 3-2 victory at Los Angeles on Nov. 14, their third victory in the past four meetings.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN West (Los Angeles), CBC, Sportsnet (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE KINGS (22-11-5): Doughty was held off the scoresheet in last month's loss to Vancouver, but he has three goals and 14 assists in 20 games since, including one of each in Thursday's setback to Vegas. Doughty needs one goal to tie Steve Duchesne (99) for second on the franchise list for defensemen. Jonathan Quick is 16-15-2 lifetime against the Canucks, a deceptive mark given his 1.66 goals-against average and .938 save percentage against them.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (16-17-5): Veteran Thomas Vanek, in his third game paired with Sam Gagner and rookie sensation Brock Boeser, had a hand in all five goals Thursday - scoring twice and collecting three assists - to give him 12 goals and 28 points on the season. Boeser scored for the fourth consecutive game and notched his eighth goal in 10 contests for a team-high 21 tallies. "It's been a blast," Boeser told reporters. "Just based off of last game, I thought our chemistry was building."

OVERTIME

1. The Kings have the league's top-ranked penalty kill with a success rate of 87 percent.

2. Since collecting an assist at Los Angeles on Nov. 14, Boeser has 16 goals in 20 games.

3. Los Angeles has struggled in division play, posting a 3-4-3 mark against Pacific foes.

Preview: Spurs at Pistons
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

The Detroit Pistons are playing down to the level of their competition of late, and that strategy backfired on them Thursday night. The Pistons will try to take care of business on Saturday, when they take a step up in competition by hosting the San Antonio Spurs.

Detroit was missing its starting backcourt combination of Avery Bradley (groin) and Reggie Jackson (ankle) on Thursday in a 102-89 loss to the Orlando Magic, but coach Stan Van Gundy was not interested in using that as an excuse. "It didn't have anything to do with being without guys to be quite honest," Van Gundy told reporters. "We weren't ready to play at the beginning. Our starting lineup was not prepared to play, didn't bring anything to the game. ... We don't need everybody to have great nights, but we can't have that many guys have that bad a night and think we're going to get wins." The Spurs are winners of three straight and six of their last seven games as LaMarcus Aldridge continues to carry the load. Aldridge scored 25 points on Thursday as San Antonio skipped past the Knicks 119-107 despite resting Kawhi Leonard.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (San Antonio), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE SPURS (25-11): The frontcourt combination of Aldridge and Pau Gasol is operating in high gear of late, and Gasol filled up the box score with 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in Thursday's win. The 37-year-old recorded a double-double in each of the last three games, starting with a triple-double in last Saturday's 108-99 win at Sacramento. Leonard continues to be brought along slowly by the team after missing the first 27 with a quad injury and logged a season-high 26 minutes in Tuesday's win over Brooklyn before taking the night off on Thursday.

ABOUT THE PISTONS (19-15): Jackson's injury elevated Ish Smith to the starting point guard spot, leaving Langston Galloway to run the second unit. That second unit shot a combined 3-of-22 from the floor on Thursday and totaled 12 points, including three points on 1-of-9 shooting and one assist for Galloway. "I think we were just trying to still get used to playing with each other again and taking this game as a hit on the chin and we have to get better," Galloway told reporters. "They came out with a lot of energy and outplayed us."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Pistons C Andre Drummond grabbed 18 rebounds in each of the last two games and is enjoying a string of four straight double-doubles.

2. Spurs SG Danny Green is 7-of-12 from the floor in two games since returning from a groin injury.

3. San Antonio took the last six in the series, including a 96-93 home win on Dec. 4.

Preview: Heat at Magic
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

The Miami Heat will have little time to recover from an embarrassing defeat when they visit the Orlando Magic on Saturday. After winning seven of 10 to match their high-water mark at two games above .500, the Heat were crushed 111-87 by Brooklyn on Friday in the finale of a four-game homestand.

"I'm speechless about it," coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters. "I don't know. We will keep on fighting and digging until we figure it out. I can guarantee you that. ... We have a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde quality to us that's extremely perplexing. Sometimes we compete at an extremely high level. You can see it, you can feel it. And then we have these games that are unexplainable." The Magic snapped a nine-game losing streak by defeating Detroit at home on Thursday. Elfrid Payton finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Orlando, which is aiming to win two straight for the first time since Nov. 8-10. Included in the Magic's nine-game slide was an 18-point setback at Miami the day after Christmas.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Miami), FSN Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE HEAT (18-17): Josh Richardson scored 19 points and Hassan Whiteside added 17 in Friday's loss, but their teammates combined to shoot a woeful 25.8 percent. Leading scorer Goran Dragic recorded 11 points on 3-of-12 shooting and is 14-for-45 - including 1-for-11 from 3-point range - in three games since returning from an elbow injury. Wayne Ellington missed all six of his 3-point attempts in the defeat after making 17 over his previous three games, including a 6-for-10 showing in the win over the Magic.

ABOUT THE MAGIC (12-24): Thursday's win came despite 19 turnovers, including 15 by the starters, and Orlando knows it needs to clean up its act in order to sustain any sort of success. "We've just got to admit the problem and try to fix it," Payton told reporters when asked about the giveaways. Evan Fournier, who missed eight games due to an ankle injury, scored 17 points and added five assists in the win over Detroit after producing 14 points against Miami in his return from the ailment.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Magic PF Marreese Speights is averaging 14 points and 5.5 rebounds over 16 minutes in two games since C Nikola Vucevic was lost to a broken hand.

2. Heat SG Dion Waiters (ankle) has missed two straight games and is expected to sit out Saturday's contest.

3. Miami has won four of its last five on the road.

Preview: Knicks at Pelicans
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

The New York Knicks have dropped below .500 and look to halt a four-game losing streak when they visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday. New York is struggling on the road with a 2-12 record, with the latest setback coming Thursday as it matched a season worst for points allowed in a 119-107 loss to San Antonio.

Journeyman forward Michael Beasley scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting in a solid effort against the Spurs, but his last five games are a reminder of his inconsistencies. Beasley scored 32 points in a win over Boston on Dec. 21 before averaging just 7.3 points over the next three contests prior to standing out against San Antonio. The Pelicans saw their three-game winning streak come to an end when they experienced defensive issues and dropped a 128-120 home decision to Dallas on Friday. The Mavericks set a franchise record with 22 3-pointers against a shaky New Orleans squad that allowed a stunning 77 first-half points.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG (New York), FSN New Orleans

ABOUT THE KNICKS (17-18): Kristaps Porzingis scored 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting against the Spurs and said he was "super mad" about the amount of times defenders hit his elbows without fouls being called. "The attention I'm getting now, I won't really get open, open looks much," Porzingis told reporters. "I have to if I'm on the block and the double-team doesn't come, I'm going to shoot over guys. It makes me super mad that little touches on the elbow and arms, they affect my shot so much. I'm confused. I'm thinking I have to change my game." Porzingis averaged 24.7 points over the previous three games and 24.3 on the season.

ABOUT THE PELICANS (18-17): Coach Alvin Gentry was highly miffed over the poor performance of his club when playing at home against one of the worst teams in the NBA. "We didn't start with the same energy we normally start with," Gentry told reporters. "We weren't as connected defensively as I thought we should have been, and so obviously, they got off to a great start shooting the basketball. That's just way too many obstacles to overcome." Frontcourt stars Anthony Davis (33 points) and DeMarcus Cousins (32, 20 rebounds) had big performances against the Mavericks, but the bench was outscored 60-10.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Davis averaged 31.5 points and 18 rebounds as the Pelicans won both of last season's meetings.

2. New Orleans PG Rajon Rondo recorded eight assists against Dallas after establishing a franchise record and career high with 25 two nights earlier against Brooklyn.

3. New York PG Frank Ntilikina recorded a season-high 11 assists against the Spurs.

Preview: Trail Blazers at Hawks
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

The availability of star point guard Damian Lillard won't be determined until close to gametime on Saturday as the Portland Trail Blazers visit the Atlanta Hawks. Lillard has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury and is considered questionable to play against the Hawks.

Portland scored just 85 points against Denver in its first game with Lillard on the sidelines before bouncing back for consecutive wins over the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia. CJ McCollum picked up the slack in Thursday's 114-110 victory over the 76ers by scoring 34 points, hitting all 14 of his free-throw attempts. Atlanta, which owns the worst record in the NBA, lost 111-98 to Toronto on Friday to halt a modest two-game winning streak. "You're always disappointed when you lose, but I think we competed for most of the game," Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder told reporters after the loss.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN Northwest (Portland), FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (18-16): Fourth-year pro Shabazz Napier has averaged 19.3 points during Lillard's absence, including efforts of 21 points against the Lakers and 23 versus Philadelphia. Napier fueled the victory over the 76ers by scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter and making 5-of-6 shots from the field. "I just got to continue to play and think positive," Napier told reporters. "The good thing about basketball is, they say you've got another game the next day, but you also have two halves. I felt like I was kind of lethargic out there in the first half. Basically it couldn't get any worse, so I just went out there and tried to be positive about it and look forward to the next half."

ABOUT THE HAWKS (9-26): Forward Taurean Prince had the best outing of his 94-game tenure in the NBA by scoring a career-best 30 points on Friday and matching his top effort with five 3-pointers. Prince, who also collected 10 rebounds, was a stellar 12-for-16, including 5-for-6 from 3-point range, after being just 14-for-42 over his previous four games. "Pretty bad games, in my opinion," Prince told reporters of his shooting woes. "I was due for a good game."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The teams split last season's two meetings.

2. Schroder scored just 14 points on 6-of-20 shooting against Toronto after averaging 27 during the consecutive victories.

3. Portland C Jusuf Nurkic recorded 21 points and 12 rebounds against the 76ers for his seventh double-double of the season.

Preview: Cavaliers at Jazz
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

The Utah Jazz just got done getting run over by one of the NBA Finals participants from last season, and now they have to play the other. The Jazz will try to bounce back from a 126-101 loss to the Golden State Warriors when they host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday.

The loss on Wednesday was the third straight for the Jazz, who are being outscored by an average of 21 points in that span. "We stopped getting back on defense, and it was like the floodgates opened," guard Rodney Hood told reporters. "They'll do that to you. They're a great team, but that third quarter (when the Jazz were outscored 42-22) just can't happen if we want to compete." The Cavaliers are capable of opening the floodgates on other teams but are coming off a pair of losses in which they failed to reach 100 points. "Sometimes, when you're winning as much as you're winning, you have slippage," Cleveland guard Dwyane Wade told reporters. "We've had some slippage, and we've got to figure out a way to nip it in the bud before it becomes: 'We in a rut, and we've got to get ourselves back out of it.'"

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Cleveland), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah)

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (24-11): The spark Cleveland is looking for could come from point guard Isaiah Thomas, who is close to making his return from a hip injury and is expected to scrimmage with the team at practice on Friday for the first time. "Dynamic scorer. I think a guy who can score 10, 12, 14 points in a row," Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue told ESPN.com of Thomas. "Can run pick-and-roll, can come off screens. He gets to the free throw line. So he adds a different dynamic to our team offensively." Thomas was acquired from Boston over the summer in the deal that sent Kyrie Irving away and averaged 28.9 points and 5.9 assists with the Celtics in 2016-17.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (15-21): The absence of center Rudy Gobert (knee) leaves Utah without its defensive anchor and most consistent inside scoring threat, and rookie Donovan Mitchell is trying to pick up some of the slack. The Louisville product scored 17 points while matching a season high with seven rebounds in Wednesday's loss and is averaging 22.6 points on 50 percent shooting in December. Hood is trying to pull out of a shooting slump and went 9-of-20 from the floor on Wednesday after going a combined 7-of-31 in his previous two contests.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Cavaliers PF Kevin Love is averaging 25.4 points and shooting 50 percent from 3-point range over the last five games.

2. Utah benched SF Jonas Jerebko on Wednesday in favor of Thabo Sefolosha, who scored 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting.

3. Cleveland earned 109-100 win over Utah at home on Dec. 16 as LeBron James recorded a triple-double.

Preview: Grizzlies at Warriors
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

Star point guard Stephen Curry is expected to return from an 11-game absence when the Golden State Warriors host the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday. Curry has been sidelined with a sprained right ankle and the team was playing well without him until losing 111-100 to the Charlotte Hornets on Friday.

The stunning home loss against the Hornets represented the team's fifth home defeat of the season -- matching the number of all last season -- and dropped Golden State's record to 9-2 during Curry's injury stint. "I would say most likely he'll play," Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters of Curry's prognosis. "We had a talk with him and he was feeling good. So we'll see how he's feeling (Saturday) morning." Memphis is enduring a poor campaign after seven consecutive playoff appearances but is looking to win for the third time in the past four games. The loss of standout point guard Mike Conley decimated the Grizzlies and is a prime factor why the club is last in the Western Conference but his loss also opened the door for Tyreke Evans to play a big role.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Memphis), NBCSN Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (11-24): Evans, a former NBA Rookie of the Year with the Sacramento Kings in 2009-10, poured in 32 points as Memphis posted a 109-99 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. The 28-year-old is averaging 23.9 points over the past seven games and has scored 20 or more points in 10 of his past 15 contests to take over the team scoring lead with a 19.4 average. "He's really good," interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters. "He's been given an opportunity here that he hasn't been given in a while, probably not since his rookie year in Sacramento. We're depending on him to do everything. We all know he has the ability to score but his playmaking is huge because it gives his teammates confidence."

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (28-8): Kerr pointed out the turnover issues (18 leading to 32 Charlotte points) after Friday's game and had to make an admission not heard often considering Golden State's longstanding home prowess and the fact the Hornets entered with a 2-12 road mark. "They took it to us, they were great, they totally outplayed us," Kerr said afterward. "We never really got going defensively." Small forward Kevin Durant scored 27 points Friday and has failed to reach 20 only three times this season.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Warriors have won nine of the past 12 meetings but are 1-1 versus the Grizzlies this season.

2. Golden State PF Draymond Green matched his career best of 16 assists against the Hornets.

3. Memphis F Jarell Martin scored a career-best 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting against the Lakers.

Preview: 76ers at Nuggets
Gracenote
Dec 30, 2017

A three-game run of stifling defense came to an end in an overtime loss at the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, but the Denver Nuggets are hoping a few days off can get them back in gear. The Nuggets will try to bounce back when they host the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.

Denver allowed 85 points or fewer in three consecutive wins, including a 96-81 triumph over the defending champion Golden State Warriors, but didn't start defending until after allowing 71 points in the first half to the Timberwolves and ended up falling 128-125 in overtime. "That second half was Denver Nuggets basketball," coach Michael Malone told reporters. "That was defending. That was rebounding. That was running. That was attacking. And the ball moved. That was a fun, exciting team to watch, and we gave ourselves a chance." Philadelphia failed to carry the momentum from a Christmas Day win as the road trip shifted out west, and they fell for the 10th time in 12 games with a 114-110 loss at Portland on Thursday. “We just didn’t capitalize,” rookie point guard Ben Simmons told reporters after his team squandered an 18-point lead. “We didn’t run our plays, didn’t get stops, rebounds. It just came down to playing hard."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBA TV, NBCS Philadelphia, Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE 76ERS (15-19): Philadelphia is not finding the win column as often as earlier in the season, but its young players continue to perform. Center Joel Embiid followed up a 25-point effort at New York on Christmas with 29 points at Portland but is expected to be held out on Saturday with the 76ers facing a back-to-back. Embiid's absence could leave more shots for Dario Saric, who went for 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting in Thursday's setback and is averaging 18 points over the last six games.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (19-16): Denver got another offensive boost on Wednesday from reserve forward Trey Lyles, who collected 23 points and 10 rebounds in the win - his seventh straight game scoring in double figures. Lyles finally got some help on the second unit from Will Barton, who scored 28 points in the loss after scoring in single figures in five of his previous seven games and contributed to a the second-half comeback effort. "Down 19 points in the second half, second night of a back-to-back, we could easily have folded," Malone told reporters. "We could have rolled over. I like the fact that our guys never did that."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Nuggets SG Jamal Murray is averaging 18.2 points in December to raise his season mark to 15.3.

2. 76ers SF Robert Covington (finger) left Thursday's game and is day-to-day.

3. Philadelphia snapped a three-game losing streak in the series with a 124-122 win at Denver last season.
