Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #10 - Post: 4:26pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,500 Class Rating: 65

Rating: 3

#11 NORTHERN TRACK (ML=2/1)
#3 BARNESLAND (ML=3/1)

NORTHERN TRACK - Have to give this gelding a chance. Ran a good outing in the last race within the last 30 days. Chatterton drops him down to this class. You don't need too much more knowledge to figure that this horse should have a chance to win at this level. That 66 fig this gelding earned in his last event tells me he's a big time player this time. BARNESLAND - This front-runner is shortening up today. Should promote his chances. Ceccato brings him right back. I advocate you stay with this hot gelding.

Vulnerable Contenders: #12 LOUIE'S HIGHWAY (ML=6/1), #6 AL PONY CHINO (ML=8/1),

LOUIE'S HIGHWAY - Hard to put your cash on the win end of any mount that finishes second and third as frequently as this entrant does. Common speed figure last race out at Mahoning Valley Race Cour at 1 mile 70 yards. Don't believe this steed will improve too much in today's race. AL PONY CHINO - This racer just hasn't looked sharp recently. Hasn't hit the board in any short distance affairs lately. Unlikely to see him doing it this time either.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - NORTHERN TRACK - Posting three superb speed ratings in the last three races. This mount is primed to beat these thoroughbreds today.

#7 GIANT ROCKS (ML=2/1)

GIANT ROCKS - This gelding likes to sit just off the pace and the way things shape up here, he should get a 'dream' trip. Caballero and Caraballo perform well when they team up. It's hard to beat a +56 return on investment for a jockey and conditioner. Caraballo brings him back again. I advocate you stick with this hot gelding.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 CATAPULT JACK (ML=9/5), #4 ALJAMRY (ML=6/1), #3 NILE GOLD (ML=8/1),

CATAPULT JACK - Last ran on Dec 8th at Aqueduct, finishing fourth. Not likely to get better off of that performance in today's event. This probable favorite ran on December 8th and hasn't had a morning drill since. This mount will probably bounce off of the last strong outing. ALJAMRY - Don't believe this horse has what it takes to cross the finish line in first in today's event. NILE GOLD - 8/1 is too short of a price to take on most any animal that has run poorly in back to back races around the track. Not likely for this thoroughbred to make a winning move with no recent success in a sprint contest. Improbable that the speed rating he garnered on November 27th will be enough in this clash.

# 2 VOCALLY 7/5

# 1 KATHY'S DAY RATE 6/1

# 4 RED SPRING 5/1

VOCALLY is my choice. Posted a formidable speed figure last time out. Is a solid contender based on figures garnered recently under today's conditions. This filly obviously likes the distance, going 5 out of 11 in her races lately. KATHY'S DAY RATE - Howard has this filly travelling well and is a competitive pick based on the very good speed figures put up in sprint races recently. Put up a sound speed fig in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this race. RED SPRING - Has longshot potential and could win at a big price. The drastic drop in company can only help this one this time out.

# 7 OSTINI 8/1

# 5 Y O L O CAT 6/5

# 4 NO SUPAH FOR YOU 4/1

OSTINI looks strong to best this group particularly if the morning line of 8/1 holds. He has recorded solid figs under today's conditions and will most likely fare well against this field. This gelding could improve with second time Lasix. Could best this field based on the speed rating - 65 - of his last effort. Y O L O CAT - This gelding should be given a chance just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint events alone. Is tough not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been quite good - 65 avg - of late. NO SUPAH FOR YOU - Ought to compete soundly in the pace battle which bodes well with this field. With a solid 63 speed rating last time out, will surely be a factor in this contest.

NBA (509) MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES VS (510) LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

Take: over

Reason: Your free play for Tuesday, January 2, 2018 is in the NBA scheduled contest between the Memphis Grizzlies and the LA Clippers. The Clippers have really improved of late, winning three straight games and five of their last six games. They have also covered three straight and are 8-1-1 ATS their last 10. While the Clippers average 105.5 ppg this season, they are averaging 117.8 ppg their last five and allowing just 106.4 ppg. The Clippers have gone OVER in six of their last eight games with one day rest and 4-1 O/U their last five overall. The Grizzlies are just 5-13 on the road this season adn 12-25 overall. Memphis is 4-1 O/U their last five and 4-1 O/U their last five vs the West conference. In addition, the last five meetings in this series have gone OVER. I like how the Clippers are scoring of late and therefore I'm taking the OVER.

Clippers-5

I'm recommending a play on the Clippers minus the points. Memphis beat LAC 115-112 at home 10 days ago. Blake Griffin hadn't returned to the floor for the Clippers at that point, but he is now and the Clips are finding success. LAC enters on a 3-game winning streak. They've won five of their last six overall, and the Clippers have been padding bankrolls, currently on a 10-1-1 ATS run. Griffin has scored 25 and 24 points in his first two games since returning to the lineup, while grabbing a total of 13 rebounds and dishing out one dozen assists. And while this is a play for us without Austin Rivers, there is a chance he could return tonight. Memphis has covered just 5 of their last 21 games with one day off between games, while the Clippers have covered five in a row at home. We'll lay the points with the Clippers on Tuesday. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

LARRY NESS

My 1* Free Play is on the LA Clippers (10:30 EST).

Memphis comes in having traded wins and losses over its last four, most recently crushing Sacramento 114-96 on Sunday. LA comes in having won three straight, most recently taking care of Charlotte with a 106-98 victory at home on Sunday.

Note that this is a big time revenge game for LA, as Memphis has taken the first two of the season series between the clubs already.

Memphis averages just 98.7 PPG, while conceding 102.1. Big man Marc Gasol averages 18.5 points, 8.5 boards and 3.9 assists per game.

LA averages 105.5 PPG and concedes 105.7. Blake Griffin is back from a MCL injury and he averages 23.7 points, plus 5.7 boards per game.

I’ll point out that the Grizzlies though are just 1-6 ATS in their last seven following a straight up victory, while LA is 5-0 ATS in its last five at home and 6-0-1 ATS in its last seven following a SU victory.

This is the final game of a road trip for Memphis and I think it gets caught looking ahead. With Griffin back in the mix, all cylinders are firing in LA right now. Consider laying the points in this particular matchup.

Good luck…Larry

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach

CBB Game #558 Tuesday Free Pick DePaul Blue Demons (-) vs Georgetown Hoyas @ 9 ET

The Hoyas are already paying for that ultra-weak non-conference schedule they faced. Georgetown is coming off of back to back losses in Big East action and they were fortunate to even be "in it" in the home loss to Butler as the Bulldogs shot an uncharacteristic 14% from beyond the arc in that one. The Hoyas now visit DePaul and, even though the Blue Demons got the upset win the most recent match-up, Georgetown has had the upper hand in most of the recent meetings including knocking DePaul out of the Big East tourney two years ago. In other words, there is no shortage of motivation here for the Blue Demons. DePaul has played the tougher schedule so far this so don't be fooled when looking at the overall records of these two teams. Also, the Blue Demons are 7-0 SU (and 5-2 ATS) as a favorite this season. Georgetown is 6-12 SU and ATS in road games with a posted total between 145 and 149.5 points. Free Pick DEPAUL

Let's back the Boston Bruins as they face off against a New York Islanders team that has been all over the place lately. The Islanders are coming off a horrible road loss to Colorado 6-1, while the Bruins have been red hot lately thanks to Goalie Tuukka Rask going 10-1 last 11 and allowing only 13 goals in those 11 games.

On the other hand the Islanders are headed in a different direction as they are just 3-6 in their last nine games. Huge edge to Boston as they are 13-3 last 16 games that they played in New York.

Boston plays extremely well when they are rested, they are 5-0 when playing on two days rest. They also play well vs the East, they are 5-1 last six vs. the Eastern Conference. New York, on the other hand, does not fare well against good teams, they are 3-7 last 10 vs teams with winning records.

This one is all Boston.

Trail Blazers vs. Cavaliers Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/02/2018

Isaiah Thomas is slated to make his long-awaited Cleveland debut Tuesday when the Cavaliers host the Portland Trail Blazers. Thomas has been recovering from a hip injury suffered in the 2017 playoffs, and his first Cleveland appearance comes four months after he was acquired in the deal that sent Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics.

Thomas averaged a career-best 28.9 points for the Celtics last season and he is ecstatic to return to the court. "It's been a long process for me," Thomas told reporters after Monday's practice. "It's been a frustrating and tough process but at the same time you got to trust it. Each and every day, I just attacked it every day to try to get better and now that day is here." Thomas also will look to help the Cavaliers halt a three-game losing streak - all on the road - and help the squad stretch its home floor winning streak to 13. Portland has won three of its last four games after producing a 124-120 overtime victory over the Chicago Bulls on Monday and is expected to get star guard Damian Lillard (hamstring) back after a five-game absence.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS Northwest (Portland), FS Ohio (Cleveland)

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (19-17): Shooting guard CJ McCollum has topped 30 points in two of the past three contests and his 32 points against the Bulls came on substandard 11-of-30 shooting. McCollum drained five 3-pointers and registered a season-best eight assists and he wasn't too thrilled about his team being scheduled on a road back-to-back while an angry Cleveland squad last played Saturday. "We know they're going to come out with lot of energy, having two days rest," McCollum told reporters. "The NBA didn't do us any favors."

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (24-12): Coach Tyronn Lue said Thomas will come off the bench Tuesday and his minutes will be watched closely as he gets himself into game shape. "Now it's finally here and just seeing how he can play with pace and getting into the paint, the speed and quickness and ability to shoot the basketball, it really changes our team," Lue told reporters. "Really excited (in Thomas' progress) from Day One to now. It's a good moment for us." Thomas also is aware it will take time - "my hip is better but I have no rhythm. I have no feel for the game right now," he said - and the expectation is that he will eventually take pressure off star forward LeBron James.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Cavaliers have won their past three home encounters with the Trail Blazers, including the memorable 137-125 victory last season when C Kevin Love scored 34 first-quarter points and finished with 40.

2. Portland swingman Evan Turner scored a season-best 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting against Chicago after averaging only 7.8 points over the previous four games.

3. Cleveland swingman Kyle Korver is nine 3-pointers away from passing Paul Pierce (2,143) for fourth place on the all-time list.

PREDICTION: Cavaliers 121, Trail Blazers 108

Spurs vs. Knicks Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

The New York Knicks snapped a four-game slide with a win at the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday and return home for their first game of 2018 on Tuesday against the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs, who knocked off the Knicks at home last week, kicked off a stretch with nine of 11 on the road in tough fashion with their lowest-scoring performance of the season at Detroit on Saturday.

New York's losing streak hit four in a row with a 119-107 setback at San Antonio on Thursday, but Kristaps Porzingis scored seven of his 30 points in the final 90 seconds on Saturday to lift the Knicks to a 105-103 win at New Orleans. "We lost four in a row and all of them were really tough losses. They were last-second, last-minute, last quarter, something close," Porzingis told reporters. "So a lot of times it brings the energy down and the good vibes. To get a win like this in the last minute to come back and do all that, that brings it back up. So we want to keep that positive atmosphere going forward and keep that going." The Spurs averaged 112 points during a three-game winning streak but shot 36.9 percent from the floor, including 5-of-26 from 3-point range, in Saturday's 93-79 loss at Detroit. San Antonio shot 51.3 percent from the field in the win over the Knicks, led by 25 points from LaMarcus Aldridge.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (San Antonio), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE SPURS (25-12): Pau Gasol scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds to compliment Aldridge in Thursday's win over the Knicks, his fourth consecutive double-double, but slumped to eight points on 4-of-9 shooting at Detroit. Aldridge managed 15 points in the loss -- seven fewer than his season average -- but there was one bright spot in the form of Kawhi Leonard's playing time. The star forward logged a season-high 28 minutes and scored a team-high 18 points in the loss after sitting out Thursday's game against New York.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (18-18): Jarrett Jack scored 15 points on Saturday, including the two clinching free throws in the final seconds, and was just happy to get the win. "We need all of them," Jack said, according to the New York Daily News. "I always say all of them look the same in April. At the end of the season when you tally them up, no matter if they're home or away, no matter if they were won by 20, triple overtime. They all look the same in April. We're trying to get as many marks in that W column as we can." The Knicks are 15-6 at home but are making only a one-game stop at Madison Square Garden before playing 13 of the next 16 on the road.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Spurs F Rudy Gay (right heel) sat out Saturday and is expected to miss two weeks.

2. Knicks rookie PG Frank Ntilikina is 1-of-10 from 3-point range over the last four games.

3. San Antonio lost 94-90 in its trip to New York last season despite getting 36 points from Leonard.

PREDICTION: Spurs 103, Knicks 97

The Atlanta Hawks are beginning to play better and are trying to crawl out of the basement in the Eastern Conference, but winning on the road still eludes them. The Hawks will try to win on the road for the first time in a month when they open a five-game trip by visiting the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.

Atlanta last won on the road Dec. 2 at Brooklyn but won three of its last four games overall -- with the lone loss coming at Toronto on Friday -- to finally reach double figures in victories. The recent surge is being sparked by point guard Dennis Schroder, who averaged 25.3 points on 53.7 percent shooting in the three wins but slumped to 14 on 6-of-20 shooting in the loss at the Raptors. The return of Devin Booker helped elevate the Suns to back-to-back wins, but the defense remains a work in progress. Booker scored 32 points on Sunday, but Phoenix allowed the Philadelphia 76ers to shoot 55.8 percent from the field in a 123-110 home loss, just the team's third setback in its last eight games.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Atlanta), FS Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE HAWKS (10-26): Second-year small forward Taurean Prince kept Atlanta in the game on Friday with a career-high 30 points on 12-of-16 shooting against Toronto and continued his high level of play the next night. Prince did not light up the scoreboard in quite the same fashion in a 104-89 win over the Portland Trail Blazers but buried four 3-pointers and grabbed 10 rebounds to go with five assists. Prince scored in double figures in 11 of the 15 games in December and is one of seven players on the roster averaging double figures, led by Schroder's 19.8 points.

ABOUT THE SUNS (14-24): Sunday's loss did little to diminish the team's high regard for itself internally, and the players believe a young roster led by Booker and TJ Warren is starting to turn the corner toward contender status. "I don't think people realize how close we are," veteran forward Jared Dudley told the Arizona Republic. "We are knocking on the front door." Warren finished up December with 28 points against the 76ers -- his highest total of the month -- and is averaging 24.4 points on 55.4 percent shooting over the last five games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Suns C Tyson Chandler recorded his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds on Sunday.

2. Hawks PF Mike Muscala (ankle) has been out since Nov. 3 but could make his return on Tuesday.

3. The home team took each of the last five in the series, with Atlanta last winning in Phoenix on March 13, 2015.

Hornets vs. Kings Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

The Charlotte Hornets have struggled on the road this season but recently notched their most impressive victory of the campaign. Charlotte plays the third contest of a four-game excursion when it visits the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday.

Charlotte owns a porous 3-13 road record but stunned the Golden State Warriors 111-100 on Friday to open the trip. Yet the momentum didn't carry over as the Hornets dropped a 106-98 decision to the Los Angeles Clippers two nights later. Sacramento experienced its own letdowns after opening a six-game homestand with an impressive 109-95 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Kings followed up with back-to-back double-digit setbacks against below-.500 teams Phoenix and Memphis, including trailing by as many as 33 points in Sunday's 114-96 loss to the Grizzlies.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS Southeast (Charlotte), NBCS California (Sacramento)

ABOUT THE HORNETS (13-23): Point guard Kemba Walker scored 30 points in the loss to the Clippers and knocked 18 3-pointers while averaging 24.2 points over the past five games. Walker topped 30 on four occasions this season and two came in the past five games. Center Dwight Howard struggled to four points on 1-of-9 shooting against the Clippers after delivering 29 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists in the upset of the Warriors.

ABOUT THE KINGS (12-24): Sacramento's performance and effort on Sunday was highly disappointing to coach Dave Joerger, who struggled to pinpoint the reasons for such a collective collapse. "Lack of focus and lack of force," Joerger told reporters. "They looked at us and shot over us, and then looked us and drove around us. Each guy has to own their own stuff." Center Willie Cauley-Stein collected 21 points and eight rebounds against the Grizzlies and is averaging 16.8 points and 8.8 boards over the past six contests.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The teams split two meetings last season, with Charlotte's victory being a 99-85 triumph in Sacramento.

2. Hornets PF Marvin Williams missed all eight of his shot attempts while going scoreless in back-to-back games.

3. Kings PG De'Aaron Fox (quadriceps) will likely miss his seventh straight contest.

PREDICTION: Kings 106, Hornets 102

Grizzlies vs. Clippers Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Blake Griffin's return is providing a boost to the Los Angeles Clippers, who look to post their sixth victory in seven games when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday. Griffin averaged 24.5 points in his first two games since being sidelined for 14 games due to a knee injury.

Griffin contributed 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists as Los Angeles recorded a 106-98 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday. The recent uptick in success has elevated the Clippers to ninth place in the Western Conference as the franchise aims to make a strong second-half run toward securing its seventh consecutive playoff berth. The Grizzlies have struggled most of the season but are averaging 112.6 points while winning three of their last five contests. "I think if you take a look at our past five games, our scoring is up, our shooting percentages are up, our assists are up and our turnovers are down," interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters. "So that's the growth that we've been looking for in our offense."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, FS Southeast (Memphis), Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (12-25): Memphis is a stellar 29-of-51 from 3-point range over the past two games, going a torrid 15-of-21 in a loss to the Golden State Warriors and following up with a 14-of-30 effort in Sunday's 114-96 road win against the Sacramento Kings. Guard Tyreke Evans continues to be a force and had 26 points versus the Kings for his eighth 20-point outing in the past nine contests. "He's had that edge all year," Memphis center Marc Gasol told reporters after Evans torched his former team. "He's had that same mentality, so don't take it like he came in here and did something he hasn't done every game. He's come with that aggressiveness."

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (16-19): High-octane guard Lou Williams poured in 40 points and contributed eight assists in Sunday's 106-98 victory over the Charlotte Hornets to continue his strong play. Williams, who made six 3-pointers in the contest, drained 24 3s over the past five games while averaging 30.4 points. "I always feel like I can get it going, but to see it early, it puts me in a different mindset, in an attack mode," Williams said afterward. "Once I get two or three early, that way I can just get everybody else involved."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Clippers are 2-0 against the Grizzlies this season, including a 115-112 victory on Dec. 23 behind a career-best 38 points from G Austin Rivers.

2. Rivers (Achilles) is questionable after sitting out Sunday.

3. Memphis F Jarell Martin is averaging 12.5 points on 22-of-35 shooting over the past four games.

Capitals vs. Hurricanes Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Although their overall winning streak is over, the Carolina Hurricanes hope to continue their run at home when they face off against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. Carolina had captured four straight before dropping a 3-2 decision at St. Louis on Saturday but seeks its seventh victory in a row at PNC Arena when it hosts Washington.

The Hurricanes won all five of their home games in December and have not lost in their own building since being edged 5-4 on Nov. 24 by Toronto. Washington appears to have bounced back from a three-game slide that included a pair of shutout losses as it is coming off back-to-back home wins over Boston and New Jersey. The Capitals recorded a total of eight goals in the triumphs after amassing only two during the 0-1-2 skid. Captain Alex Ovechkin collected three assists in Saturday's 5-2 victory over the Devils and is among the league leaders with 24 goals.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCSN Washington, FSN Carolinas

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (24-13-3): Barry Trotz passed Lindy Ruff to become the fifth-winningest coach in NHL history with Saturday's triumph, which raised his career total to 737. Next on Trotz's radar is Al Arbour, who recorded 782 victories during his Hall-of-Fame coaching career. Nicklas Backstrom recorded a goal and two assists versus New Jersey to end his four-game point drought.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (18-13-7): Lucas Wallmark made his season debut Saturday and scored the first goal of his NHL career. The 22-year-old Swedish center, who was a fourth-round pick in the 2014 draft, notched a pair of assists in eight games last campaign - his first in the league. Jeff Skinner leads Carolina with 12 goals but has recorded just one in his last 11 contests.

OVERTIME

1. Ovechkin's next game will be his 962nd, moving him past Peter Bondra for second place in franchise history and putting him 21 behind Calle Johansson for the top spot.

2. Carolina C Marcus Kruger is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

3. Washington C Lars Eller is two points shy of 200 for his career.

Lightning vs. Maple Leafs Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

The NHL-best Tampa Bay Lightning opened their five-game road trip with a dominant performance and hope to build off that when they visit the scuffling Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. The Lightning won for the 11th time in 13 games Sunday as they scored four second-period goals en route to a 5-0 victory at Columbus to lead second-place Toronto and Boston by 10 points in the Atlantic Division.

Tampa Bay is 9-1-0 following a loss this season and showed that bounce-back ability again Sunday, after a dull performance against Philadelphia two nights earlier, as Tyler Johnson and league scoring leader Nikita Kucherov increased their point streaks to 12 and 10 games, respectively. "What I've really liked about our team is our response," Lightning coach Jon Cooper told reporters. ". ... We haven't gone through any prolonged losing streaks. If we did get a loss, we nipped it right away. That shows the leadership and character in the room." Toronto was rolling along right on Tampa Bay's tail earlier in the season, but has not been as good of late with a 3-5-1 mark over the last nine after a 6-3 setback at Vegas on Sunday. "Defense is a five-man unit, I'm not just blaming (the blue line)," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock told reporters after the loss Sunday, "we were all guilty today. ... Sometimes when you play a quick team like (Vegas), some guys get exposed."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TVA, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), Sportsnet Ontario (Toronto)

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (28-8-2): Johnson has found his top form since moving to right wing at the very end of November, recording eight goals and 10 assists in the last 12 games, while Kucherov tops the NHL in goals (25) and points (56) after putting up eight and 20, respectively, in December. Captain Steven Stamkos decided he needed to shoot the puck more about a week ago and registered four goals in his last three games to push his point total to 49. Andrei Vasilevskiy earned his league-leading fifth shutout Sunday and tops the NHL is wins (25), goals-against average (2.02) and save percentage (.935).

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (23-15-2): Center Auston Matthews picked up where he left off before missing 10 games with a concussion, notching four goals in the last four games and reaching the 100-point plateau in his 112th NHL contest. Defenseman Morgan Rielly owns six assists in his last four games and right wing William Nylander has recorded three goals and set up four others in his past six contests. Frederik Andersen, who is 1-4-0 with an .842 SP career against the Lightning, gave up 14 goals in his first seven appearances in December before surrendering nine tallies in the past two games.

OVERTIME

1. Toronto C Nazem Kadri (13 goals) missed the last two games with an upper-body injury and is considered day-to-day.

2. Tampa Bay D Victor Hedman is tied for fifth on the team with 29 points and registered 12 of them in the last nine games along with a plus-13 rating.

3. The Lightning are 6-2-1 in the last nine games against the Maple Leafs and won in their last two trips to Toronto.

Penguins vs. Flyers Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

As the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins prepare to resume their bitter rivalry with their second meeting this season, the primary concern is their respective place in the standings. The Flyers are buried at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division, one point behind visiting Pittsburgh entering Tuesday's clash at Wells Fargo Arena.

Philadelphia did manage to end the 2017 calendar year on a high note, halting a three-game losing streak by knocking off league-best Tampa Bay. "That's the way we want and need to play games. We need it to carry over," said goalie Brian Elliott, who will be in net when the Flyers kick off a four-game homestand. The two-time reigning Stanley Cup champion Penguins are reeling with seven losses in their last 10 games - and two of the wins have come via shootouts. "We all have to look in the mirror," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan told reporters. "We all have to make sure we stay together and we try to find ways to help each other to get out of this."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (19-18-3): Pittsburgh was limited to one goal in each of its past two games, marking the seventh time in nine games it has produced two goals or fewer. "I think we're trying. I don't think anyone's out there not trying," captain Sidney Crosby told reporters. "Sometimes you just gotta simplify things and make sure you don't hurt yourself with mistakes." Evgeni Malkin has been the lone exception, scoring five times in his last seven games.

ABOUT THE FLYERS (16-14-8): Sean Couturier had three points at Tampa Bay, giving him 18 goals and 18 assists - three points shy of his career high set in 2013-14 and 2015-16. He forms a potent top line along with Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek, who are tied for fifth in the league in scoring with 46 points apiece. Elliott will make his 14th consecutive start after posting an 8-4-1 mark and 2.15 goals-against average in December.

OVERTIME

1. Crosby, who scored the OT game-winner versus Philadelphia on Nov. 27, has 37 goals and 87 points in 60 games versus the Flyers.

2. Giroux collected two assists in the November meeting, giving him 43 points in 41 games versus Pittsburgh.

3. Penguins G Matt Murray, injured in the first matchup, is 2-2-0 with a 3.08 GAA against the Flyers.

Bruins vs. Islanders Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

The New York Islanders were among the league's hottest clubs entering December, but they endured a rocky final month of 2017 that was capped by a 6-1 drubbing at Colorado on New Year's Eve. The Islanders hopes a return to home ice will reverse their sagging fortunes when they host the surging Boston Bruins on Tuesday.

Much of New York's early-season success was fueled by dominance at home as it enters Tuesday's matchup with a 12-3-3 record at Barclays Center. "Starting with myself, we have to look ourselves in the mirror and know we have a big week ahead where we have to challenge ourselves to be better," Islanders captain John Tavares told reporters after the team was outscored 10-3 in a two-game trip to Winnipeg and Colorado. New York will need to raise its game against the Bruins, who are coming off a 5-0 romp in Ottawa and are on an eight-game point streak (6-0-2) that has carried them into second place in the Atlantic Division. "We're feeling good. We're taking it game by game," Boston center David Krejci told reporters. "You don't want to get too ahead of yourself. Just stay in the moment, focus on the next game, what happened today, enjoy tomorrow and come back at it."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet, NESN (Boston), MSG Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE BRUINS (21-10-6): Ryan Spooner played center during Krejci's six-game injury absence, but moved to right wing upon Krejci's return in Ottawa and promptly delivered a pair of goals, giving him seven points in seven games since returning from his own injury. "It is just a matter of his health, and now it seems to be he is getting through these games without any re-occurrences," coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters. Forward David Backes, named the NHL's Third Star of the Week, has four consecutive two-point games.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (20-15-4): Slow starts have been a troublesome issue throughout the season for New York, which has surrendered the opening goal an NHL-high 25 times in 39 games and has allowed a league-worst 45 goals in the opening period. Josh Bailey accounted for the lone goal against the Avalanche, his seventh in the past eight games, and became the second NHL player to reach 50 points this season - six away from his career high. Bailey is riding an 11-game point streak with 12 assists in that span.

OVERTIME

1. Bruins G Tuukka Rask is in the midst of a career-best, 11-game point streak (10-0-1).

2. New York has lost five straight and eight of nine at home to Boston.

3. The Bruins have won 15 of their last 20 (15-3-2), including a 3-1 win over the Islanders on Dec. 9.

Sharks vs. Canadiens Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

The Montreal Canadiens return home after a disastrous road trip but their first game of 2018 is against an opponent that has dominated the series. After dropping the last four of their seven-game road trip (2-5-0), the Canadiens hope to bounce back against the visiting San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.

Montreal scored only three goals during the four-game skid and wrapped up the lengthy trek with a 2-0 defeat at Florida on Saturday, but Tuesday's matchup is the opener of a five-game homestand. "When we look at the schedule, we're happy to be back home," Canadiens center Jonathan Drouin told reporters. "You feel good here. We're going to try to use it to our advantage." San Jose had won three in a row before it was trounced 6-0 in Dallas on Sunday in the first stop of a five-game road trip. The Sharks extended their winning streak in the series to five games with a 5-2 victory over Montreal on Oct. 17, their ninth win in the last 10 against the Canadiens.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS California (San Jose), RDS, TSN2 (Montreal)

ABOUT THE SHARKS (20-12-4): There was one silver lining in San Jose's most lopsided defeat of the season as leading goal scorer Logan Couture returned to the lineup after missing four games due to a concussion. "My legs weren't there; timing and everything was off," Couture told reporters. "I didn't play very well, but I'm back. I made it through the game and I'm ready for the next one." Couture scored twice and had a season-high four points in the win over Montreal in mid-October.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (16-19-4): Captain Max Pacioretty, who scored at least 30 goals in each of the last four seasons, has been the subject of endless trade rumors. Pacioretty is mired in a deep slump, failing to score in 12 straight games and notching one goal in his last 21. "You just live your life and worry about your family. If that happens, it happens," Pacioretty said of the trade talk. "I've played here for 10 years and I've never gone through something like this."

OVERTIME

1. Sharks G Martin Jones has yielded at least four goals in seven of his last nine starts.

2. Canadiens G Carey Price is 2-7-1 with a 3.07 goals-against average versus the Sharks.

3. San Jose had scored 14 power-play goals in nine games before getting blanked in Dallas.

Panthers vs. Wild Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

After completing a perfect four-game homestand, the Florida Panthers attempt to extend their overall winning streak to six as they begin a five-game road trip Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild. Florida made it five victories in a row on Saturday, when it completed its string at BB&T Center with a 2-0 triumph over Montreal.

Connor Brickley scored one goal and set up another while James Reimer made 38 saves en route to his second shutout in three games as he made his 11th consecutive start for the Panthers, who allowed a total of four goals during the homestand. Minnesota aims for its third straight home win as it begins a stretch during which it plays seven of nine at Xcel Energy Center. The Wild, who have gone 9-1-1 in their last 11 at home, are coming off their second straight shutout loss on the road - a 3-0 setback at Nashville on Saturday. Minnesota is looking to avenge a 4-2 defeat in Florida on Dec. 22 in which the Panthers erased a 2-1 deficit with three third-period goals, including a pair by Jonathan Huberdeau.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Florida, FSN North (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (17-16-5): Brickley's two-point performance on Saturday was his third of the season and first since Oct. 26 against Anaheim. The 25-year-old forward has scored the winning goal twice during Florida's winning streak, including the previous meeting with Minnesota. Vincent Trocheck, who tops the club with 15 goals and shares the lead with 36 points, is two assists away from 100 for his career.

ABOUT THE WILD (20-16-3): Minnesota continues to regain its health as Devan Dubnyk (lower body) returned to action Friday while Nino Niederreiter and Zach Parise hope to get back into the lineup this week. Niederreiter has not played since the previous game against Florida due to a foot ailment and Parise has yet to make his season debut due to a back injury that required surgery. Jason Zucker is tied for the team lead with 15 goals but has scored just once in his last 11 games.

1. Wild C Matt Cullen needs three points to reach 700 for his career while D Matt Dumba is one shy of 100.

2. Ten different players have scored a game-winning goal for Florida but none have recorded more than two.

3. Minnesota RW Mikael Granlund recorded four goals and an assist in his previous two games before the team was blanked in Nashville.

Devils vs. Blues Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

The New Jersey Devils look to avoid a third consecutive defeat when they continue their four-game road trip Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues. New Jersey had its five-game overall winning streak and six-game run at home halted with an overtime setback against Buffalo on Friday and began its trek the following night with a 5-2 loss at Washington.

Travis Zajac celebrated appearing in his 800th NHL game by recording a goal and an assist, matching the point total he produced over his first 20 contests of the season. St. Louis accomplished what New Jersey is hoping to when it halted a two-game skid Saturday with a 3-2 triumph over Carolina. The Blues squandered a 2-0 lead in the second period, but Scottie Upshall tallied 8:58 into the third to help give the team just its third victory in 10 games. Brayden Schenn notched an assist on the goal, increasing his team-leading point total to 41 while ending his three-game drought.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, MSG Plus 2 (New Jersey), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE DEVILS (22-10-6): Zajac wasn't the only member of the team to reach a milestone on Saturday, as Marcus Johansson registered a pair of assists to increase his career total to 300 points. The 27-year-old Swede has notched three points in his last two contests after being kept off the scoresheet in each of his previous four. Cory Schneider has made nine consecutive starts in net, going 6-1-2 while allowing three goals or fewer in each of the first seven games before yielding four in each of the last two.

ABOUT THE BLUES (24-15-2): Jay Bouwmeester was activated from injured reserve and returned to the lineup Saturday, recording two shots and a plus-3 rating in 17 minutes, 34 seconds of ice time. The 34-year-old defenseman, who sat out St. Louis' first 21 contests this season after fracturing his ankle during training camp, had missed nine games with a lower-body injury. Blue-liner Alex Pietrangelo collected four assists during his current three-game streak but has gone 20 contests without a goal.

1. Two of Upshall's six goals this season have been game-winners.

2. New Jersey added goaltending depth prior to its previous game, acquiring Eddie Lack from Calgary and assigning him to Binghamton of the American Hockey League.

3. To make room on the roster for Bouwmeester, St. Louis assigned D Jordan Schmaltz to San Antonio of the AHL.

Blue Jackets vs. Stars Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

The top performers are doing their jobs and the supporting actors are chipping in as the Dallas Stars surge toward the top of the Central Division standings while notching at least a point in six of the last seven games (4-2-1). The Stars look to continue the trend and earn a fifth straight victory on home ice when they host the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.

Jamie Benn owns a six-game point streak, Tyler Seguin has five goals in the last five contests and goaltender Ben Bishop boasts a .946 save percentage over his past five outings for Dallas, which is 13-6-2 over its last 21 encounters. "I think the fans are starting to see that this is a team that has an identity," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock told reporters after Sunday's 6-0 victory over San Jose. "They can see it on the ice, they can see the way we play, and I think they're really into what we're doing right now." Columbus is beginning to show the effects of having three of their top nine forwards and a top-four defenseman out with injuries, losing three in a row (0-2-1) and managing two wins in its last eight outings (2-4-2). "No one's coming to help us," Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno told reporters after the 5-0 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday. "No one's feeling sorry for us. The league keeps coming. We've got to find a way out of it. It starts with our mentality of who we are as a team."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Columbus), FSN Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (22-15-3): Columbus won't have forwards Cam Atkinson (foot), Alexander Wennberg (back) and Brandon Dubinsky (facial fracture) back in the near future while defenseman Ryan Murray (upper-body) could return soon. Left wing Artemi Panarin registered 18 of his team-high 34 points in 15 games during December and reportedly skated with Foligno and rookie Pierre-Luc Dubois as coach John Tortorella shuffled his top two lines at practice Monday. Josh Anderson, who owns a team-high 14 goals, dropped down to team with Sonny Milano and Boone Jenner on the second forward unit.

ABOUT THE STARS (22-15-3): Benn has three goals and five assists during his six-game run and leads the team with 37 points - two better than Seguin, who needs one goal for his fifth straight season with at least 20. Tyler Pitlick registered a pair of goals and Radek Faksa notched three assists in the win over San Jose as the duo skated with Antoine Roussel on an emerging strong third line for Dallas. Right wing Alexander Radulov, who is fourth on the team with 32 points, was limited to 9:16 of ice time Sunday by an upper-body injury but Hitchcock said he should be fine for Tuesday.

OVERTIME

1. Blue Jackets G Sergei Bobrovsky (199 career victories) has one win (1-2-2) and an .896 save percentage in his last five games, but shut out the Stars in Dallas last season.

2. Stars D John Klingberg, whose 29 assists lead all NHL blueliners, boasts seven points in his last six games and has been key on a power play that has converted once in each of the last six contests.

3. Columbus D Zach Werenski leads all blue liners in the league with 11 goals and top-pair partner D Seth Jones has seven points in his last seven games.

The Winnipeg Jets have won three in a row since the holiday break entering Tuesday's road game against Colorado Avalanche, and Connor Hellebuyck's play in goal is a big reason why his team is among the leaders in the Western Conference. Hellebuyck was named NHL first star of the week Monday after winning his third consecutive start in Sunday's 5-0 victory over Edmonton, finishing the seven-day period with a .952 save percentage and a 1.67 goals against average.

"I thought we were pretty darn consistent right through," Jets coach Paul Maurice told reporters after Sunday's victory, in which five different Winnipeg players scored and Hellebuyck made 35 saves. The Avalanche are 7-3-1 in their past 11 games after Sunday's 6-1 victory over the New York Islanders, breaking open the game with four second-period goals. Captain Gabriel Landeskog scored twice in a two-minute span during the middle-period outburst, and Nathan MacKinnon finished with three assists. "We know there's a lot of work to do still, but the first three months have been fun," Landeskog told the media afterward. "I still think we have another couple of gears."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), Altitude TV (Denver)

ABOUT THE JETS (23-11-6): Forward Kyle Connor scored in his third consecutive game Sunday and has six points (three goals, three assists) in his past four contests. Hellebuyck is 21-4-5 on the season and ranks third in the NHL in wins while sitting in the top 10 in both goals against average (2.37) and save percentage (.923). Center Blake Wheeler has four points in his past three games with goals in two straight contests.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (19-16-3): Colorado has killed off 33 consecutive power plays and ranks third in the NHL in penalty kill percentage (84 percent). MacKinnon is tied for fifth in the league in points (46) and has five goals and eight assists in his past eight games. Center Carl Soderberg scored for the seventh time this season Sunday, and has three goals and two assists in his past four contests.

OVERTIME

1. Colorado F J.T. Compher will miss the next two weeks with an upper-body injury suffered in Friday's victory over Toronto.

2. Hellebuyck recorded his third shutout of the season Sunday.

3. Avalanche G Semyon Varlamov has a .922 save percentage with 12 goals allowed in his past five games.

Kings vs. Oilers Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

The Edmonton Oilers are going backward again after an embarrassing New Year's Eve loss and hope to begin 2018 with something positive when they host the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night. The Oilers had won four in a row - and seven of 10 to start December - before losing the last three contests at home, including Sunday's demoralizing 5-0 setback against Winnipeg.

"It's concerning. Especially playing at home at this time of the year when we had something good going," Edmonton coach Todd McLellan told reporters. "Pre-Christmas we were on a roll and felt good about ourselves. But that doesn't happen automatically, you have to show up and at least attempt to outwork the other team." It won't be easy for the Oilers to turn things around against Los Angeles, which rallied for a 4-3 victory at Vancouver on Saturday to earn a point for the fourth time in five games (3-1-1). "We just don't give up," Kings defenseman Drew Doughty, who notched his 99th career goal for the winner Saturday, told reporters. "It doesn't matter if we're down, if we're up, we push forward." Los Angeles goaltender Jonathan Quick is 9-3-1 with a .928 save percentage in his last 13 starts this season and 20-3-5 lifetime against Edmonton with a 1.83 goals-against average.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, FS West (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE KINGS (23-11-5): While Doughty registered four points in his last four games, the top two scorers for Los Angeles have cooled off a bit as Dustin Brown has been kept off the scoresheet in three straight games and captain Anze Kopitar managed two points in the last eight. Kopitar still leads the way with 40 points and Tyler Toffoli is fourth on the team with 28 after posting a goal and two assists at Vancouver. Veteran right wing Marian Gaborik owns 11 points - three in the past two contests - and a plus-8 rating in 17 games this season after returning from injured reserve.

ABOUT THE OILERS (17-19-3): McDavid (team-best 45 points) was kept off the scoresheet in the last two games, but fellow forward Leon Draisaitl has continued to produce with two goals and eight assists in his last seven outings. Center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who leads the team with 15 goals, was limited to one shot Sunday and left wing Milan Lucic has not earned a point in his last three contests. Goaltender Cam Talbot (14-12-2), who shared the league lead with 42 wins last season, gave up 16 goals during a solid eight-game stretch before surrendering 13 in his last three appearances.

OVERTIME

1. Doughty is tied for third among defensemen in the league with 29 points and second in plus-minus rating at plus-20.

2. Edmonton is 2-for-22 with the man advantage in the past eight outings and allowed four power-play tallies in the last two.

3. The Oilers triumphed in three of five meetings with Los Angeles last season with all three wins coming at home.

PREDICTION: Oilers 4, Kings 2

Predators vs. Golden Knights Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

The Vegas Golden Knights continue to rewrite the expansion team record books as they host the Nashville Predators on Tuesday in what could remarkably wind up being a Western Conference finals preview. Vegas is riding expansion team records of a seven-game winning streak and a 12-game point streak (11-0-1) after defeating Toronto 6-3 on Sunday to complete an 11-1-1 December.

The Golden Knights, who are an eye-popping 16-2-1 at home, lead the Pacific Division by three points over Los Angeles with two games in hand. "I don't even know what's happening right now. We're just finding ways to win every night," Golden Knights center Jonathan Marchessault, who has a club-best 36 points, told reporters after recording a goal and an assist Sunday. "... It's so fun playing hockey right now. We don't overwork, we just do the right thing." Nashville sits second in the Central, one point behind Winnipeg with two games in hand, and is coming off a 3-0 victory versus Minnesota on Saturday for its second win in three games. Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis, a key cog in the Predators' run to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, was a full participant in practice Monday and could make his 2017-18 debut Tuesday after recovering from offseason knee surgery.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS Tennessee (Nashville), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Las Vegas)

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (23-10-5): Defenseman P.K. Subban has recorded a goal and an assist in each of his last two games and is second on the team with 29 points, including a club-most 20 assists. Kevin Fiala (10 goals, 26 points) has been kept off the scoresheet in the last four contests after recording eight goals and four assists during a nine-game point streak to begin December. Filip Forsberg (team bests of 15 goals and 34 points) will not play because of an upper-body injury and will also miss at least Thursday's game in Arizona.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (26-9-2): William Karlsson (33 points) recorded the first hat trick in team history Sunday and boasts a team-leading 20 goals after scoring 15 in 162 games with Columbus over the previous two seasons. "Change in environment can be good for a player," Karlsson told reporters. "I've gotten a lot of chances here in Vegas. I think I've done pretty well. I have two good linemates (Reilly Smith and Marchessault) I play with every night. They make it easy on me." Defenseman Luca Sbisa (plus-6, 20:18 of ice time in 23 games) could be activated off injured reserve after missing seven games with a lower-body injury.

OVERTIME

1. Golden Knights LW David Perron and RW Smith are tied for third on the team in points with 30 and each have nine goals.

2. The Predators have won eight straight games when their opponent scores five or more goals in its previous contest.

3. Vegas won the first meeting 4-3 in a shootout Dec. 8 in Nashville.

Ducks vs. Canucks Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

The Anaheim Ducks are feeling pretty good about themselves as they embark on a three-game swing through Western Canada beginning with a contest against the struggling Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. Anaheim has won four of its last five games after Sunday's 5-2 victory over NHL-worst Arizona moved it into a tie for third in the Pacific Division with San Jose, although the Sharks have four games in hand.

"We're a team that once we start doing things the right way and we see some of the results happening, we feel like we can compete with anybody,'' Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler told reporters after recording a goal and an assist Sunday. "These last two games at home were very important for us before going out on a tough western road trip. So hopefully we can carry some of that momentum along with us." Red-hot Rickard Rakell packed a five-game goal streak in his suitcase after scoring twice Sunday, giving him a team-high 14 in 35 games and six in the last five contests. Vancouver lost 4-3 to Los Angeles on Saturday and is 2-8-1 in its last 11 games since Bo Horvat (10 goals, 20 points, plus-5 in 28 games) fractured his right foot. "If we're not playing our best game, we're not winning hockey games," Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom told reporters. "We don't have that team where we can go half speed or 70 or 80 percent. We are so close to winning hockey games, but it's not enough."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet East, Ontario, Pacific (Vancouver), FS West (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE DUCKS (18-14-8): Antoine Vermette (seven goals, 15 assists) was promoted to play on the top line with captain Ryan Getzlaf and Rakell, and responded with a goal and two assists Sunday for his first points in nine games. "We were just trying to find balance in our lineup and trying to put people in places they could be comfortable with and give them an opportunity to have success,'' coach Randy Carlyle told reporters. "We're a work in progress. We haven't had our team together for more than four or five games now." Getzlaf, who is four assists shy of 600 for his career, had two assists versus Arizona and recorded a goal and 12 assists in 10 December games after missing November because of a facial fracture.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (16-18-5): Calder Trophy candidate Brock Boeser (team highs of 21 goals, 38 points) was held off the scoresheet Saturday after scoring in four straight games and recording eight points during that span. Daniel and Henrik Sedin (two goals this season) haven't recorded a point in the last three contests with Henrik on pace to record the fewest goals in his 17-year career. Defenseman Troy Stecher (minus-3, average of ice time of 16:03 in 25 games) left Saturday's contest with an undisclosed injury and is questionable to play Tuesday while fellow blue-liner Chris Tanev (plus-9, 20:51, 25 games) could return after missing seven contests with a groin injury.

OVERTIME

1. Ducks D Josh Manson is a team-high plus-14 after going plus-7 in 15 December games, and his 17 points are tied for sixth on the club.

2. Vancouver is 0-for-10 on the power play in its last four games after going 6-for-15 in its previous four contests.

3. Anaheim won the first of four meetings this season 4-1 on Nov. 9 with Jakob Silfverberg scoring twice and Rakell recording three assists. It was Silfverberg's first two-goal game since Jan. 31.

Indiana vs. Wisconsin Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Wisconsin's offense has been extremely consistent over the last four games - all non-conference victories - but it remains to be seen if that trend will carry over into Tuesday's home tilt with Indiana. The Badgers have scored 81, 81, 82 and 82 points over the last four contests and will aim for a fifth straight victory behind standout forward Ethan Happ.

Happ, a 6-10 junior, is averaging 16.4 points and 8.2 rebounds this season and has shot at least 50 percent from the field in six straight games. He had 18 points in 20 minutes the last time out in a convincing win over UMass Lowell and could be a handful for an Indiana team that has hardly been consistent this season. The Hoosiers upset Notre Dame last month before getting destroyed by IPFW in their ensuing contest, although they have stabilized somewhat with two straight wins by 28 points apiece. Juwan Morgan led the way with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting in Friday's win over Youngstown State and will try to help Indiana get some revenge after losing three times to Wisconsin last season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT INDIANA (8-6, 1-1 Big Ten): The Hoosiers have given up fewer than 60 points in each of their last two victories, and that's critical because they are not one of the better shooting teams in the Big Ten. Only two of their top seven scorers shoot above 44 percent from the field - Morgan (59.1), who averages a team-high 15.3 points, and De'Ron Davis (63.2), who chips in 10.1 points. Morgan and Davis are tied for the team lead with 21 blocks, although neither is a threat from 3-point range, as Morgan is 2-of-17 from the arc and Davis has yet to attempt a shot from long distance.

ABOUT WISCONSIN (8-7, 1-1): The Badgers only have two double-digit scorers on the season - Happ, who actually leads the team in scoring, rebounding and assists, and Brad Davison (11.7 points), who has knocked down a team-high 27 3-pointers on the year. Davison has been a pleasant surprise as a freshman but has been in a mini-slump from 3-point range, going 4-of-16 over the last three games. Aleem Ford is shooting 47.7 percent from the arc and has drained 11-of-15 over the last four contests, plus he matched his season best with seven rebounds against UMass Lowell.

TIP-INS

1. Wisconsin G Brevin Pritzl set a career high with 18 points against UMass Lowell.

2. Since committing three turnovers in the season opener, Davis has nine total turnovers in the last 13 games.

3. Indiana G Robert Johnson made 5-of-10 3-pointers against Notre Dame but since is just 5-for-18 over the last three contests.

PREDICTION: Wisconsin 66, Indiana 62

Auburn vs. Tennessee Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Auburn aims to stretch its winning streak to 11 games when it opens SEC play at Tennessee on Tuesday. The Tigers won 12 games before the calendar year for only the third time in school history, while the No. 20 Volunteers are looking to bounce back from a loss to Arkansas in their league opener.

Auburn hasn't been to the NCAA Tournament since 2003 and is hoping the strong start will lead to the end of the drought. "The league is the best it's been and the deepest it's been," Tigers coach Bruce Pearl told reporters. "It's going to be a grind night in and night out. Physically, it's going to be a challenge, but I think we are also prepared." Tennessee, which is looking for its 11th consecutive home win over Auburn, blew a nine-point lead with four minutes left in regulation on Saturday en route to a 95-93 overtime loss to the Razorbacks. "We had control of the game for 36 or 37 minutes, but just like (a Dec. 17 loss to) North Carolina, we lost the game in the last two or three minutes," Volunteers sophomore guard Jordan Bone said afterward. "We didn't execute the way we wanted to down the stretch, and they made us pay."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT AUBURN (12-1, 0-0 SEC): Sophomore guard Jared Harper made five 3-pointers while scoring 21 points in a loss to Tennessee last season. Harper is averaging 15.4 points over the past five games and is averaging 12.2 points and a team-best 5.5 assists overall. Junior guard Bryce Brown and sophomore guard Mustapha Heron share the team scoring lead at 15.8 points per game, while junior forward Desean Murray (10.8) also averages in double digits while contributing a team-best 7.4 rebounds.

ABOUT TENNESSEE (9-3, 0-1): Bone (8.6) scored a season-best 21 points in the loss to Arkansas and is averaging 16.5 points over the past two games. Sophomore forward Grant Williams leads the squad with averages of 15.1 points and 6.6 rebounds, while junior forward Admiral Schofield (12.3) and sophomore guard Jordan Bowden (11.6) are also averaging in double digits. Bowden has been lava-hot from 3-point range by making 26-of-42 attempts for an SEC-leading 61.9 percent.

TIP-INS

1. Tennessee is 48-7 all-time against Auburn in games played in Knoxville.

2. The Tigers have made at least 10 3-pointers on seven occasions this season.

3. Williams has scored in double digits in 10 consecutive games.

Penn State vs. Maryland Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Maryland will be searching for contributors along the front line and trying to avoid looking too far ahead when it returns to Big Ten play against visiting Penn State on Tuesday. The Terrapins, who visit No. 2 Michigan State on Thursday, have lost two power forwards for the season in recent days, first seeing top rebounder Justin Jackson go out with a torn labrum and then watching his replacement - junior Ivan Bender - suffer a torn meniscus in his right knee.

"Ivan has been playing some of his best basketball over the past month," coach Mark Turgeon said in a news release Sunday. "He has developed into a strong contributor for our team and we are going to miss his leadership and presence on the court." Maryland recovered from a poor first half to defeat UMBC 66-45 on Friday as sophomore Kevin Huerter scored 20 points to lift his team to its sixth consecutive win. The Nittany Lions were stunned by Rider on a buzzer-beater at home before Christmas and took out their frustrations on Coppin State on Saturday. Tony Carr scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half in the 88-43 win for Penn State, which knocked off Maryland 70-64 at home in the previous meeting on Feb. 7.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network

ABOUT PENN STATE (11-4, 1-1 Big Ten): Carr rebounded from a rocky shooting effort in the loss to Rider to hit 7-of-9 shots in Saturday's win, including a 3-for-4 effort from beyond the arc that left him at 52.8 percent on 3-pointers. "It felt great," he told reporters. "Just to get that bad taste out of our mouth and get a win and go on the road and hopefully get a big road win." Lamar Stevens, who ranks second behind Carr (18.9) in scoring at 14.1, scored 25 points in last season's win over the Terrapins.

ABOUT MARYLAND (12-3, 1-1): Sophomore Anthony Cowan leads the Terrapins in scoring (15.5) but is shooting 17-for-53 from the floor over his last five games, including 4-for-13 against UMBC. Huerter is trending in the other direction and has shot better than 50 percent in seven of his last eight games, during which he is at 53.7 percent from beyond the arc. Redshirt freshman Joshua Tomaic, who had 16 points and 14 rebounds in 33 minutes over two games earlier this month, could fill the void left behind by Jackson and Bender's injuries.

TIP-INS

1. Cowan missed all five of his shot attempts in 23 minutes of the loss to Penn State last season.

2. Nittany Lions F Mike Watkins entered the New Year ranked second in the Big Ten in blocks (3.5) and field-goal percentage (67.0)

3. Terrapins freshman G Darryl Morsell is averaging 8.8 points on the season but 13 over his last four games.

Alabama vs. Vanderbilt Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Alabama travels to Vanderbilt on Tuesday for its first SEC road contest of the season after beginning conference play with a dominant performance against the fifth-ranked team in the nation. The Crimson Tide blasted Texas A&M 79-57 on Saturday as freshman John Perry hit five 3-pointers in scoring 18 points, and on the heels of a lackluster loss to Texas in the final non-conference game, four Alabama players combined for 67 points.

"We came out and had one of our better games this season, and that's what you can look forward to the rest of the season," Perry told reporters after the game, citing Alabama's preparation following the Texas loss. Vanderbilt dropped its conference opener at Florida, 81-74, rallying from a 20-point halftime deficit to pull within four points inside the final two minutes. The Commodores shot 12-of-31 from 3-point range, an encouraging sign after Vanderbilt struggled from long range throughout its non-conference schedule. "It was a big hill, but we had a shot there to cut it to one with a minute left," Vanderbilt coach Bryce Drew told the media afterward.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, SEC Network

ABOUT ALABAMA (9-4, 1-0 SEC): Freshman Collin Sexton, the SEC's leading scorer at 20.1 points per game, scored 16 points against Texas A&M despite shooting just 3-of-12 from the field. Petty, who earned his second SEC freshman of the week award, is averaging 13.3 points per game while shooting 38.8 percent from 3-point range. The Crimson Tide play three of their next four games on the road.

ABOUT VANDERBILT (5-8, 0-1): Jeff Roberson led five Commodores in double figures against Florida with 18 points and is averaging 14.7 points and 8.2 rebounds (third in the SEC). Riley LaChance added 13 points against the Gators and moved into 10th place on Vanderbilt's all-time assists list. Vanderbilt is shooting 42.3 percent from 3-point range in its past three games.

TIP-INS

1. Alabama senior G Riley Norris will miss the rest of the season with a hip injury.

2. Vanderbilt's Matthew Fisher-Davis and LaChance each have scored 1,177 career points, tied for second among current SEC players.

3. The Crimson Tide are 13th nationally in blocked shots per game (6.2).

Michigan vs. Iowa Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Michigan looks to stay on the winning track when it resumes Big Ten play on the road against Iowa on Tuesday. The Wolverines dropped a 71-62 decision to Ohio State on Dec. 4 before reeling off five straight wins in nonconference action, including a 76-51 victory against Jacksonville on Saturday, and hope to continue their winning ways by beating Iowa for the first time since Jan. 22, 2014.

"We'll take the win," Michigan coach John Beilein told reporters. "At 12-3 with this nonconference schedule is about as good as we can ask for." The Hawkeyes are feeling good about themselves after toppling Northern Illinois 98-75 to extend their winning streak to a season-best five games. Iowa lost its first three games in December, including back-to-back defeats to Penn State (77-73) and Indiana (77-64) in conference play, but is averaging 90.2 points during its current streak and hopes to pick up its first Big Ten win by downing the Wolverines for the sixth consecutive time. "This us what we're capable of when working together, working for good shots and making good passes," Iowa guard Jordan Bohannon told reporters. "It's definitely something to build off of."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT MICHIGAN (12-3, 1-1 Big Ten): Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman led the way with a season-high 20 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the floor in the comfortable win against Jacksonville. Charles Matthews added 18 points and seven rebounds while Duncan Robinson has snapped out of his shooting slump by scoring 12 points to finish in double figures for the fourth consecutive game. Moritz Wagner tallied seven points and pulled down six rebounds after missing the previous two games with a bone bruise in his right foot.

ABOUT IOWA (9-6, 0-2): Luka Garza poured in a career-high 25 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field to go along with seven rebounds in the win against Northern Illinois. Tyler Cook scored 17 points while Isaiah Moss added 11 points and five assists as seven different Hawkeye players made at least one three-pointer against the Huskies. Bohannon dished out a team-high seven assists and finished without a turnover as Iowa matched a program record for most assists in a single game with 34.

TIP-INS

1. Iowa has won the last four meetings with Michigan at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

2. The Wolverines have held four straight opponents to fewer than 60 points.

3. The Hawkeyes are ranked fourth nationally in assists per game (19.7).

Butler vs. Xavier Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Less than a week into Big East Conference play, there only are three undefeated teams in the league. Two of them clash Tuesday night in Cincinnati as No. 5 Xavier hosts Butler.

The Musketeers enter the contest with the top-five national ranking and a nine-game win streak, but it's the Bulldogs who are garnering the pre-game hype and headlines following their 101-93 win Saturday over previously undefeated and top-ranked Villanova. The Wildcats were allowing only 65.8 points and 6.6 3-pointers per game entering the contest, but host Butler caught fire early and never let up, scoring 101 points on the strength of a 15-of-22 performance from 3-point range. Forward Kelan Martin scored a team-high 24 points and guard Paul Jorgensen added a career-high 23 as the Bulldogs shot 60 percent from the field and became the first team to top 100 points against the Wildcats since Creighton on Feb. 16, 2014. "Villanova is a team I grew up watching in (Madison Square) Garden," said New York-native Jorgensen in a post-game news conference. "So to take them down at Hinkle (Fieldhouse) is really amazing. But like Coach (LaVall Jordan) said, we don't want this to be the highlight of our season."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS1

ABOUT BUTLER (12-3, 2-0 Big East): With Saturday's win, the Bulldogs improved to 3-5 all-time against No. 1-ranked teams, but the schedule offers no break as they're in the midst of four straight vs. top-25 foes with contests against No. 24 Seton Hall and No. 23 Creighton following the game against Xavier. The 6-foot-7 Martin is averaging a team-leading 18.9 points and 7.1 rebounds and has scored at least 20 in each of his last four outings. Guard Kamar Baldwin (14.5 points), Jorgensen (12.3) and forward Tyler Wideman (10.1) also are averaging double figures for the Bulldogs, who are still ranked seventh in the 10-team conference in scoring (80.1 points) despite putting up at least 85 in each contest of their current four-game win streak.

ABOUT XAVIER (14-1, 2-0): The Musketeers, meanwhile, haven't lost since a 102-86 defeat against current No. 4-ranked Arizona State on Thanksgiving weekend in Las Vegas but needed to overcome a 16-point second-half deficit Saturday against visiting DePaul to win 77-72 and keep their current roll intact. Guards J.P. Macura and Trevon Blueitt scored 19 and 16 points, respectively, to pace Xavier in the game and are the only two Musketeers averaging double digits on the season with Blueitt leading the way with 19.7 points and Macura scoring 12.9. With 5.7 rebounds per game, 6-foot-9 forward Tyrique Jones leads four players averaging at least 4.2 boards on a team which owns the Big East's second-best average rebound margin at plus-8.0.

TIP-INS

1. Xavier has won seven of the 10 matchups since the teams joined the Big East together in 2013, including a 62-57 victory in the Big East Tournament last March.

2. The Musketeers are a Big East-best 10-0 at home this season while Butler is 1-1 in true road games.

3. Blueitt, a senior, didn't start Saturday for the first time since his freshman season as punishment for showing up late to a team shoot-around and struggled through a 4-of-13 shooting performance in 31 minutes en route to his 16 points.

TCU vs. Baylor Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Seventeenth-ranked Baylor will try to rediscover its offense when its hosts No. 8 TCU on Tuesday in a Big 12 game. The banged-up Bears looked lost without starting forward Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. in Friday's league opener against Texas Tech, and could drop out of the coaches poll when the new one is released Tuesday.

The Bears had one assist and were held to a season-low 53 points without Lual-Acuil, who is a game-time decision after missing Friday's contest with a non-contact foot injury. Lual-Acuil's rebounding will also be needed against TCU, which is ranked 14th nationally at plus-9.2 boards while averaging 87.6 points. The Horned Frogs' perfect start was snapped in a shootout, which they led by 13 with 10 minutes left, against No. 12 Oklahoma. Baylor has won 11 straight meetings with TCU - covering all the games since the Horned Frogs joined the Big 12 - by an average of 18.1 points.

ABOUT TCU (12-1, 0-1 Big 12): Senior Kenrich Williams leads five TCU starters in double figures with 15.1 points and a team-best 9.4 rebounds. Senior Vladimir Brodziansky adds 13.4 points on 64 percent shooting while sophomore Desmond Bane, who averaged 7.1 points last year, adds 12.8 points. Sophomore Jaylen Fisher averages 11.0 points and 5.7 assists for TCU, which ranks third nationally with 19.9 assists.

ABOUT BAYLOR (10-3, 0-1): Manu Lecomte leads the Bears with 17.5 points and is ranked second in the league with 3.6 made 3-pointers. Lual-Acuil accounts for 15.1 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks while Nuni Omot adds 11.6 points. Senior forward Terry Maston (10.0 points, 7.0 rebounds off the bench) was scoreless in his return after missing six games with a broken hand.

TIP-INS

1. Williams, who has scored in double figures in nine straight games, has six double-doubles.

2. Baylor freshman Mark Vital is averaging 11.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in his past three games, including 12 points in his first career start Friday.

3. TCU is looking for first win against a major conference opponent this season.

Pittsburgh vs. Louisville Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Playing in its first rivalry game without former coach Rick Pitino in 16 years, Louisville got humiliated on national television 90-61 on Friday by Kentucky. Interim coach David Padgett will try to get his Cardinals refocused when an offensively challenged Pittsburgh team visits Tuesday in Louisville's ACC opener.

"Well, look, we've got 18 ACC games starting on Tuesday, so we have got to bounce back. If we don't learn from this then that's when it gets really bad," Padgett said after the game. "You have to learn from this, but you just have to move on and get ready for Tuesday because that's going to come up." The Wildcats used a 20-6 run to close the first half and their 24-11 surge built a 67-38 lead that eventually reached 32, as the Cardinals were limited to just 35 percent shooting for the game and had their six-game winning streak stopped. Pittsburgh, which has just two active letter winners from last season's squad, opened conference play with a 67-53 loss to Miami on Saturday as the Panthers shot 40.4 percent and committed 17 turnovers. "We are not a team that's built right now to break a guy off on a dribble and just take a guy one-on-one," coach Kevin Stallings said. "We are not built right now to be able to throw it inside and either get a bucket or a foul or draw a double team and kick it out."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (8-6, 0-1 ACC): Shamiel Stevenson (10.4 points, 5.3 rebounds) came off the bench to lead Pitt with 16 points against the Hurricanes, Jared Wilson-Frame (12.9 points) added 13 and Parker Stewart (6.8 points) registered 12. With senior forward Ryan Luther (12.7 points, 10.1 rebounds) out for a fourth straight game, the Panthers started four freshmen for the fourth consecutive game and none of the five starters against Miami was with the program last season. Freshman point guard Marcus Carr (10.9 points, 4.1 assists) found the going a bit tougher in his first conference tilt, going scoreless on five shots in 22 minutes.

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (10-3, 0-0): Deng Adel scored 13 points and Ray Spalding and V.J. King added 12 apiece against the Wildcats. Adel, a 6-7 junior, leads three players in double figures at 15.4 points per game with point guard Quentin Snider chipping in 11.8 points and Spalding adding 10.8 with team highs of 9.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals to go with 2.2 blocks per game. Despite Saturday's debacle, Louisville still makes it name on defense, holding opponents to 66.5 points per game, 38.4 percent shooting (21st in Division I) and 8.2 blocks (second).

TIP-INS

1. Louisville leads the all-time series 14-5 and is 6-0 against Pitt at the KFC Yum! Center.

2. Luther is one of four players in the ACC (along with Duke's Marvin Bagley III, North Carolina's Luke Maye and Notre Dame's Bonzie Colson) averaging a double-double.

3. The Cardinals swept the series in 2016-17, getting 22 points from Qentin Snider in the home triumph and a career-high 29 from Donovan Mitchell in the road win.

PREDICTION: Louisville 86, Pittsburgh 59

Nebraska vs. Northwestern Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Northwestern has rebounded from a disappointing start to the season and will try to keep the positive momentum going when it hosts Nebraska in Big Ten action Tuesday. The Wildcats have won four straight meetings with the Cornhuskers, including two wins last season.

The Wildcats had three missteps in November, including a blowout loss to Texas Tech and bad one-point loss at Georgia Tech, but they played much better in December. Northwestern has won five of its last six and is coming off a 95-73 rout of Brown on Saturday. The Huskers are in search of a season-best fourth straight win after enduring a tough shooting night to hold on for a 71-62 win over Stetson on Friday. Nebraska is 0-3 on the road and has dropped all three games by double digits.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network

ABOUT NEBRASKA (10-5, 1-1 Big Ten): The Cornhuskers like to let it fly from 3-point range, averaging 21.5 attempts per game as guards James Palmer Jr. (15.1 points) and Glynn Watson Jr. (12 points) lead the offense. Forward Isaac Copeland (12.1 points, 6.7 rebounds) is the most effective big man in a frontcourt that is a bit undersized. Reserve guard Anton Gill (10.6 points) is the Huskers' top 3-point shooter and leads a bench that has averaged 24.4 points per game overall and 33.6 over the past three games.

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN (10-5, 1-1): Guards Scottie Lindsey (14.7 points) and Bryant McIntosh (13.3 points, 5.5 assists) and swingman Vic Law (13.5 points) are the Wildcats' offensive leaders. Big man Dererk Pardon (12.1 points, 6.3 rebounds) has had the hot hand lately, though, going 23-of-31 from the field over his last four games, and he has quite a track record against the Huskers. Pardon has enjoyed two of his best performances against Nebraska, racking up a career-high 28 points and 12 rebounds at Nebraska in December 2015 and collecting 19 points and a career-best 22 boards last January.

TIP-INS

1. A fifth straight win over Nebraska would match Northwestern's five-game streak against Rutgers as its longest against a Big Ten foe since topping Minnesota six straight times from 2003-07.

2. The Huskers are averaging 75.8 points - their highest average through 15 games since 1995-96 - and are 10-1 when scoring at least 70 points.

3. Watson and Northwestern G Jordan Ash were backcourt mates on the 2015 Illinois Class 3A state championship team at St. Joseph High School near Chicago.

PREDICTION: Northwestern 74, Nebraska 71

Florida vs. Texas A&M Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

A shorthanded Texas A&M team hopes to avoid an 0-2 start to SEC play when the sixth-ranked Aggies host Florida on Tuesday. The Aggies are 7-0 at home and have won 10 of their last 13 conference home openers, while the Gators are playing their first true road game of the season.

The Aggies were hammered 79-57 at Alabama in Saturday's SEC opener, as Texas A&M was a dismal 2-for-21 from 3-point range and shot a season-low 30 percent overall. Texas A&M could be in for more offensive struggles against the Gators with leading scorer D.J. Hogg (14.6 points, 6.8 rebounds) serving the last of a three-game suspension for violation of school policy and No. 3 scorer Admon Gilder (12.7, 5.3) dealing with a knee injury. The Gators have won three straight following a stretch of four losses in five games that included an ugly 65-59 loss to Loyola Chicago, and they opened SEC play with an 81-74 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday. Florida also has a pair of wins over ranked opponents, though, defeating Gonzaga and Cincinnati on neutral courts.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT FLORIDA (9-4, 1-0 SEC): The Gators have found themselves in a bit of an offensive slump of late, but they have a talented group of guards who can score in a number of ways. Leading scorer Jalen Hudson (17.4 points) is coming off the bench now to back up a three-guard lineup led by Rice transfer Egor Koulechov (14.7 points, 6.8 rebounds). Point guard Chris Chiozza (13.2 points, 5.5 assists) is having a solid season, but the Gators need KeVaughn Allen (12.2 points) to find his stroke after shooting a paltry 35.9 percent overall and 30.6 percent from 3-point range thus far.

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (11-2, 0-1): The Aggies' approach changes dramatically without Gilder and Hogg, two of their best ball-handlers. Two freshmen are now starting in the backcourt alongside Marquette transfer Duane Wilson (12.1 points, 4.5 assists), but big men Tyler Davis (13.9 points, 8.2 rebounds) and Robert Williams (eight points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks) will have to do more to fuel the offense. The Aggies also miss Gilder and Hogg on the defensive end, where they rank sixth in the nation in field-goal defense (36.9 percent) and third in 3-point defense (27.1 percent) but had a tough time against Alabama.

TIP-INS

1. After scoring in triple-digits in four of their first five games, the Gators have topped 80 points only twice in their last eight contests.

2. Williams has blocked a shot in 40 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the nation.

3. Koulechov has made 31 consecutive free throws and is shooting an SEC-best 97.6 percent from the line.

PREDICTION: Florida 77, Texas A&M 75

Texas Tech vs. Kansas Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/02/2018

Texas Tech is a perfect 3-0 against top-25 opponents this year including a 77-53 smack-down of No. 17 Baylor on Friday night in its Big 12 opener. The Red Raiders will try to make it four in a row over ranked foes this season on Tuesday night when they travel to 11th-ranked Kansas.

The Jayhawks, who opened conference play with a 92-86 win at Texas, have won 13 Big 12 titles in a row so a road win would be huge for Texas Tech. Second-year Red raiders head coach Chris Beard will be trying to make history Tuesday night because the Red Raiders, who lost by just one point to then-No. 3 Kansas (80-79) at home last season, are 0-17 all-time at Allen Fieldhouse. Toss in the fact that Kansas has 11 straight home conference openers dating back to a 59-55 loss to Kansas State on Jan. 14, 2006 and the Red Raiders definitely are trying to buck some pretty big trends. "The word around our camp today and yesterday and, eventually, tomorrow is opportunity," Beard said. "You get into this to play against the best and coach against the best. This is a great early conference game for us to see where we stack up against one of the best teams in the country."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (12-1, 1-0 Big 12): The Red Raiders jumped out to a 40-19 halftime lead against Baylor en route to their largest margin of victory in the Big 12 since 2010-11. Senior guard Keenan Evans leads the team in scoring with 16.6 points per game, which is tied for sixth in the Big 12 and also leads the team with 22 3-pointers, 47 assists and 20 steals. Freshmen guards Zhaire Smith (10.7 points) and Jarrett Culver (10.4) also are averaging in double figures on a team that has 10 players averaging 13 or more minutes per game.

ABOUT KANSAS (11-2, 1-0): The Jayhawks, who are averaging 87.8 points per game and shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, are one of six teams inDivision I that have five players averaging 10.6 points or better. Junior guard Lagerald Vick leads the team in scoring (17.4) and is second in rebounding (6.4) and had 21 points in the win at Texas, his sixth 20-point game of the season. Senior guards Devonte' Graham (17.2 points) and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk (16.6) also are off to hot starts while 7-foot sophomore center Udoka Azubuike (15.3) and sophomore guard Malik Newman (10.6), a highly touted transfer from Mississippi State, also are averaging in double figures.

TIP-INS

1. Kansas, which finished 17-of-35 from 3-point range in the win over Texas, ranks ninth in the nation in both 3-point shooting percentage (42.2) and 3-pointers made per game (11.2).

2. Azubuike ranks second in the nation in field goal percentage (75.8) and is also fourth in the Big 12 in rebounding (8.4).

3. Texas Tech ranks second in the nation in both scoring defense (58.2 points) and field goal percentage defense (36.0).

PREDICTION: Kansas 70, Texas Tech 66

Georgetown vs. DePaul Preview and Predictions

By Gracenote for Scores and Stats
by Gracenote on 01/01/2018

Max Strus continues to light up the scoreboard for DePaul, which will attempt to earn its first Big East victory Tuesday against visiting Georgetown. Strus scored 33 points in defeat for the second time this season as the Blue Demons fell to No. 5 Xavier, and the junior will look to keep his streak of four straight 20-point games going against the Hoyas.

Strus, a 6-6 guard who transferred from Lewis University, matched his career high in points and 3-pointers (six) against Xavier, but it wasn't enough to allow the Blue Demons to hold on to a 16-point second-half advantage. "We have a lot to learn," Strus told the media following the loss, which was the 33rd in the last 38 league games for DePaul. "We need to learn to execute at the end of the game and take the crowd out of it." After tying the game at 64 with seven minutes remaining, the Blue Demons went 2-of-8 from the field and committed three turnovers the rest of the way. Marcus Derrickson had 20 or more points in consecutive games for the first time in his career, but the Hoyas struggled with turnovers once again in losing to Marquette.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT GEORGETOWN (10-3, 0-2 Big East): While Patrick Ewing's team had some trouble with ball control during the non-conference portion of its schedule, it has been downright atrocious in the Big East. The starting lineup racked up 19 giveaways, including five from point guard Jonathan Mulmore, as the Hoyas finished with more than 20 for the second straight game. The Hoyas have also shot less than 44 percent in their first two league games, with junior center Jessie Govan, who has nine double-doubles this season, having the most trouble in that area.

ABOUT DEPAUL (7-7, 0-2): Justin Roberts has shown that he can be a productive player for the Blue Demons, albeit in a small sample size. In the two games that the freshman guard has played more than 30 minutes, he has averaged 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and three assists for Dave Leitao's team, which has lost 14 straight games to ranked teams. Senior center Marin Maric, who had combined 39 points and 15 rebounds in the previous two games, fell back to earth against Xavier with four points to go with seven rebounds, six assists and seven turnovers.

TIP-INS

1. After shooting 50 percent or better in the first nine games, Govan has gone 17-of-44 over the past four games.

2. Eli Cain needs 19 points to become the 50th player in DePaul history to notch 1,000.

3. Prior to a win in the second meeting last season, DePaul had been 0-15 against Georgetown in Big East games and trails 29-8 in the series.

PREDICTION: Georgetown 80, DePaul 75

NCAAB Game of the Day: Texas Tech at Kansas betting preview and odds

No. 21 Texas Tech Red Raiders at No. 13 Kansas Jayhawks (-7, 149)

Toss in the fact that Kansas has won 11 straight home conference openers dating back to a 59-55 loss to Kansas State on Jan.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: Kansas opened as 8.5-point home favorites and by Tuesday morning that number was bet down to -7. The total hit betting boards at 149 and has yet to move.

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (12-1 SU, 6-3 ATS, 3-6 O/U): The Red Raiders jumped out to a 40-19 halftime lead against Baylor en route to their largest margin of victory in the Big 12 since 2010-11.

ABOUT KANSAS (11-2 SU, 8-4 ATS, 5-7 O/U): The Jayhawks, who are averaging 87.8 points per game and shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, are one of six teams in Division I that have five players averaging 10.6 points or better.

Play on: Nebraska +8 -107 at 5Dimes

10* FREE NCAAB PICK (Nebraska +8)
I'll take a shot here on the Cornhuskers nearly catching double-digits on the road against Northwestern. The Wildcats have won 5 of 6, but the 5 wins have come against Brown, Lewis, Valpo, Chicago St and DePaul. Their best win on the season is a 72-68 home win over Illinois. Nebraska isn't a great team, but they have the same 10-5 record as Northwestern and have shown they can compete with a team like the Wildcats. Nebraska lost by just 1-point at home to Kansas and beat Minnesota at home by 10-points as a 9-point dog. I think the Cornhuskers can hang around here and keep this within the number and wouldn't be shocked if they won the game outright. Give me Nebraska +8!

One of the best kept secrets in the NBA is the turnaround of the New York Knicks, especially when they are playing at home. The Knicks are 15-6 SU & 15-6 ATS inside Madison Square Garden this season. They have recent home wins over Boston and Oklahoma City. The Spurs are coming off an ugly 79-93 road loss to the Pistons. They haven’t exactly been any better with Kawhi Leonard in the lineup than they were without him before. The Spurs are just 8-10 SU & 6-11-1 ATS on the road this season. New York is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 games vs. Western Conference opponents. Give me the Knicks.

NCAA-B | Nebraska vs Northwestern
Play on: Nebraska +8 -107 at 5Dimes

Jack’s Free Pick Tuesday: Nebraska +8
The Northwestern Wildcats have been one of the more overrated teams in the country after making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history last year. They haven’t played nearly up to that level thus far in 2017-18.
The Wildcats are just 10-5 on the season with a 36-point loss to Texas Tech and a 26-point loss to Oklahoma already. Injuries have played a role, and they could be without their best player and floor general Bryant McIntosh (13.3 ppg, 5.5 apg) tonight, who is questionable with a knee injury.
Nebraska has been impressive here of late. The Huskers are 4-2 SU & 4-0 ATS in their last six games overall. They only lost by 10 at Creighton as 12-point dogs, they only lost 72-73 at home to Kansas as 12-point dogs, and they beat Minnesota outright 78-68 as 9-point home dogs. Those three performances alone show they can compete with Northwestern tonight.
The Huskers are 4-0 ATS in their last four games vs. a team with a winning record. The Wildcats are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games following a win. Bet Nebraska Tuesday.

NHL | Jets vs Avalanche
Play on: UNDER 6 -105

It's easy to think offense with the Jets, who rank fifth in goals scored. But Winnipeg also has a top-eight defense and a hot goalie in Connor Hellebuyck. He is 5-0-1 in his last six starts and was named NHL first star of the week on Monday after compiling a .952 save percentage and 1.67 goals against average mark. Hellebuyck has a strong history, too, versus Colorado with a 1.76 GAA and .927 save percentage in four games. Winnipeg just shut out Edmonton, 5-0, on the road two days ago. The Jets have a defensive shutdown pair in Jacob Trouba and Josh Morrissey. They stopped Connor McDavid and they can hold Nathan MacKinnon in check. The Jets' defense will get an added boost, too, if star defenseman Dustin Byfuglien returns here as expected. He's missed the last 10 games with a lower-body injury. Colorado is a much improved team. The Avalanche just held the Islanders, the No. 3 goal scoring team in the league, to one goal this past Sunday. The Avalanche rank third in penalty killing and are on a streak of 33 consecutive power plays they have stopped. The last time the Avalanche surrendered a man-advantage goal at home was Dec. 1. Colorado has a hot goalie, too. Semyon Varlamov has a .922 save percentage in his last five games. He won't have to worry about Mark Scheifele, one of the top point producers in the NHL, who is sidelined with an upper body injury. (Editor's note: Long-time hockey buff Stephen Nover is beating the NHL for a third straight season and has won four of his last five hockey plays. Follow Stephen's hockey and turn a tidy profit.)

Dave’s Tuesday Free Play:
1* on Mississippi State +2.5
The Key: Ben Howland has really turned around this Mississippi State program already. The Bulldogs are off to a 12-1 start this season, yet they are listed as home underdogs to Arkansas here Tuesday night. I like the price we are getting with the Bulldogs in this matchup. Arkansas is 1-8 ATS in road games against top teams who outscore their opponents by 12-plus points per game. The Razorbacks are 21-43 ATS in their last 64 road games when the line is +3 to -3. The Bulldogs are 7-0 ATS after failing to cover the spread in 2 or more consecutive games over the last 3 seasons. Take Mississippi State.

NBA | Hawks vs Suns
Play on: Suns -120 at betonline

#NBA FREE PICK FROM MIKE LUNDIN
The Atlanta Hawks closed out 2017 by winning three of their last four contest, the most recent a 104-89 upset triumph over Portland the day before New Year's Eve.
The Hawks won the three games at home during that stretch while losing big at Toronto, and they're just 3-15 SU on the road this season and 2-12 ATS in their last 14 games following a straight up win of more than 10 points. I think they'll struggle on the road once again, this time at Phoenix Tuesday night.
The Suns took a 123-110 beating by Philadelphia here at Talking Stick Resort Arena on New Year's Eve, but they're 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven games following a straight up loss of more than 10 points and perfect 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings with the Hawks.

NCAA-B | Hofstra vs Northeastern
Play on: Hofstra +4½ -105 at betonline

Free Pick on Hofstra +
I like the value here with the Pride catching points on the road against the Huskies. Hofstra is simply undervalued after losing 3 straight. They are the better team in this matchup and shouldn't be getting points, as I would have this closer to a pick'em.
The Pride have been money making machines in this spot, going 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games as a road underdog, including a perfect 6-0 ATS in their last 6 when listed as a road dog of 3.5 to 6 points. Adding even more value here, is that Northeastern is a miserable 0-8 ATS in their last 8 as a home favorite of 3.5 to 6 points. Take Hofstra!
